  1. I agree it is very winnable. They should win this without much issue. It’s just the regional they needed to get back on a roll. If Arkansas was sent to Corvallis then I would be worried but not with these opponents. The Beavers I believe will move on to the supers. Hopefully Oklahoma State wins the Vandy regional and the Beavers can get a super regional in Corvallis. Wouldn’t mind facing Vandy because they probably should have faced them in Nashville in 2007. Now they could face them and I think that would be a fun super but I would still prefer a super regional in Corvallis, maybe some of it is so I could see it live lol

    • I am suprised they drew a “winnable” bracket but I’m not taking anything for granted given the last couple of weeks. I was expecting to see someone like Fresno St. or Arkansas in this bracket. Don’t really know much about Georgia but having to fly cross-country to play is difficult.

      • Georgia has a 5+ team ERA, and average hitting (.278). They were 30-30 on the year.

Creighton has a good record, but their team ERA is fairly high and they haven’t played any decent opponents.

Beavs were gift-wrapped an early Christmas present, which is very unlike the NCAA…I expected Fresno St. (dangerous team) as well.

        • When Susak and Rodriguez were hurt and couldn’t play, the team rallied – I haven’t looked at all the lists and stats that I know I should be viewing when I say this – so it’s more of a question (again, not rhetorical) – What was the w-l record without them and what is it upon their return? Was the team chemistry better when they didn’t play?

        • I must be pretty rare to be a #1 in a regional bracket with two 30 loss teams included. I guess we will find out if the team is broken or just went into a funk against superior pitching.

    • There you guys (not singling you out BB20) go again. “should,if, believe, hopefully, will.” aargh – If you want to go nebulous reasoning, you could say Oregon beat Creighton 2 out of 3 in men’s bb in Eugene, and Oregon humiliated/whopped/swept/3 of 3 the Beavs in baseball also in Eugene, so once again OS will be disappointed although these games are in Corvallis because OS loses anything and everything even remotedly connected with U of O. Silly, yes, but so is all this other stuff. Wait to see what actually happens and THEN comment.

  2. It’s like the Beavs are a 60 year old dying fart who can’t get it up, and this regional is three piping hot supermodels locked in his bedroom for the weekend.

Meaning, if the team can’t get excited about this…

    • It is suprising to me given how competitive Pat Casey is that he hasn’t been able to get the team to respond over the last couple weeks. Every team goes through rough spells but this was rediculous in that they wouldn’t even compete. Some of the comments (like “we’ll be fine”) from the players are alarming. This team doesn’t enough talent or depth in the rotation to rely on “flipping the switch” come tournament time. Nor should they be playing with that mindset in the first place.

  3. Agreed, but I would’t take Creighton for granted. They typically play good D, have 2 decent starters, and are playing well. They won their conf title outright as well as their tourney, and being that TD Ameritrade park is their home field, they would love to make it back…I’d say they are probably lookoing at the Beavs late tanking and are thinking the same thing…this one is winnable. Also the school remembers their last trip to the state just a few months ago. But yes, I’d hate to be in that UCLA regional. Yikes. How many CWS games have those schools been apart of the last several years? Oh, and aside note…suck it Tressell! Glad to see u go!

  4. A bunch of disturbing comments in the Oregonian:

Hopefully our kids will respond a little bit to the good news of hosting a regional.” –Pat Casey

“Stories like that,” said third baseman Carter Bell, “give you hope.

“Now we have to answer the call.” –Parker Berberet. Pretty sure Friday was the day to answer the call, Parker.

These quotes don’t sound as if they’re from a #1 seed in a regional to me.

  5. Casey during his interview today after the regionals were released seemed pretty irritated with his players. Said some interesting things about his team.

        • Thanks, BB20. Interesting that it seems to be more about motivating this team than teaching. One would expect fundamentals to be rock solid at this level but the performance on bunts down the first base line seem to say otherwise. About Monday BP, sounds like there is a mandatory day off required by NCAA but voluntary BP is OK, is that how you understand it?

          • If one isn’t motivated to perform to the best of their ability, what happens to said effort? What does a non motivated person’s effort look like? I would think this person’s attitude and effort would be borderline lackadaisical to “if I don’t lay down a bunt, oh well, I’m not too worried about it.”

If a person is motivated to do well, they are more disciplined in paying attention to the game, and and apparently they felt they had an invite to postseason play in the bag and hosting a regional or even a super regional wasn’t much of a motivator for them to do well against the ducks especially if doing well or your best against your rival isn’t enough of a motivator.

  6. Off topic:

The Pac-12 Championship Logo contest ended 2 hours early very suspiciously as #2 was making a good comeback. Was supposed to go to 5pm PST. I think Larry said pull the plug instead of letting it play out and #2 maybe even taking it in the final 15 minutes. (Very interesting development)

    http://www.pac-10.org/logocontest.aspx

    • Now they took down the numbers too. I saw it closed early and ended at 33.05% for #3 and 31.36% for #2 just in case they try pulling a fast one. That was weird. #2 was starting to move and had enough time. It looked like it would have come back and probably won. It was going to get a bit hectic though and maybe Larry didn’t like that?

      • I thought 4 was awful and 3 was the best of the bunch and thought 1 was too plain and ordinary. #2 uses too much of the “shield” look. The pac-12 logo is already a shield, why add another larger one as a background?

  7. The View Results is wrong too. It is old info. If you vote though before 5 you will see that it is now very close. I predict they will be crowning #2 the winner tomorrow as it looks like it may pass #3 in another 15 minutes. Crazy. It finished strong though so I am OK with it if that happens.

  8. #2 is going to take it as it has the momentum as long as those are cumulative numbers we are seeing. I think so. :) I wonder if Larry just crowns #2 tomorrow and pretends no technical glitches happened at all. #2 had the momentum so I think the numbers are real just weird that their “Results” are off and old still. I guess they will fix that after the voting ends? #2 up by about 2 full % points now and that will likely swell in the final hour.

  9. Baseball is a very streaky game. It is really a kick in the gut OSU got swept this weekend, but the slump fell upon them at the very worst time of the year. Every team goes thru it – even the bought-and-paid-for-all-stars stinkin’ Yankees.

We’ll know soon enough on Friday whether they have come out of it. If not, it will be a short remainder of the season for them, even if they are playing winnable games/not great competition (the ducks were supposed to be “winnable” also..right?). Don’t know whether they should work their asses off this week, or just relax and get mentally prepared. They DO need to spend some time in the damn batting cage though!! And the coaches need to let these guys swing the bat, quit making them sit on first pitches. That killed them all weekend.

    • Yeah, first pitch fast balls were fun to watch on Friday. But Anderson was getting called strikes on pitches that were about six inches above the plate. I was sitting close enough to hear the ump (and yell at him a couple times), and Susac’s late strike out watching was the worst call of the night. He got a low pitch that the ump didn’t call for once, and the Nikegon bench moaned. I get it, he’d been getting that call all night. The ump said it was too low. Susac watched the next pitch come in even lower, and the ump called it.

Susac said some not very nice things after that call.

It was hard for them to find any consistency from the umps. Gaviglio got one low ball call all night, and that only occurred after someone bombed the ump with a loud, “Call ’em both ways blue!” Anderson got about 80% of his low balls called, about 40% of his obviously outside balls (with the catcher falling over trying to reach it), and about 60% of his high balls.

He had absolutely no control over his last two to three innings. All he had to do was get the ball near the plate, and it was a strike. But he had a lot of problems doing even that.

If Gaviglio didn’t put it between the numbers and the belt, it was a ball.

And I haven’t been to an NCAA game in quite a while, so maybe I’m wrong in this last point. But while the Beavs were pitching, the PA would blast crappy music between pitches. Isn’t that illegal? Shouldn’t the ump have stopped the game to make the PA knock that off? I’m guessing since Casey didn’t complain it’s somewhat normal?

    • Amen to quit making the players sit on the first pitch. Listening to the last few games, it was like football and handing off to Quizz – so predictable.

  10. Is it just me or does it seem like whenever you start to believe in the Beavers they go out and lay a giant stinking rotten egg… 2008 and 2009 civil wars, the 2010 season with high hopes. Then on the flip side whenever you are about to give up hope they come and stun you like the big USC victory or the 2007 baseball title run.

That is why I have no hope for this postseason.

  11. It’s not of note that Nikegon didn’t make the tourney. It would only be of note if they did.

It’s sink or swim time. This team is one of streaks, and we’re either going to continue this one or start another, winning one. A lot of teams were backing into the post season. i think it’s just a long road with a lot of teams looking too far forward near the end.

What’s the stat? 75% of all car accidents occur within two miles of home?

I think we see this team respond with a new game for the second season.

I hope for a CWS Championship.

  12. I couldn’t bring myself to even log on to this site all weekend…that series made we want to hurl. I can’t deal with this anymore. There’s no doubt that I’m one of the fans that, at least in part, measures our success by how we fare against the likes of Oregon. This makes three times in three years we have lost to Oregon in a major men’s sport with a conference title on the line. We are getting owned.

Angry..RE: sobriety…good post. Funny that we feel awkward or even embarrassed by talking about deciding not to drink. I doubt if anybody’s life has ever improved by getting smashed all the time.

  13. Gaviglio, Bryant, and Keyes are Pac-10 first-teamers, with Bell, Boyd, Dunn, Smith, Susac, and Osich honorable mention, and Pat Casey is the Coach of the Year.

Despite the late-season struggles, this team played far above their talent level and it’s nice to see Casey in particular get recognized for that. The team needed to keep that high level of play going the last two weeks, and this week more than ever. I’m looking forward to Friday’s game.

    • I think a survey of most fans here would have had our projections for the cellar of the league as ridiculous. But I don’t think anyone thought we were going to be frontrunners either.

We did slightly better than I thought we would in the end, and a lot better considering Susac and Jake were out for a long stretch.

I think Gaviglio was much better than I expected. Osich was a little less than expected, but I couldn’t think too highly of him coming off rehab (I did anyway, I guess). Wetzler and Schultz both have great stuff, but they both played like frosh too often. Keyes was spectacular at the plate, and Susac and Jake are who I thought they’d be.

I’m not as worried about who we lost to in the last two series as i am about just losing. We got stuck trying not to lose, and the pitching calls showed it. Our defense is only great when we use it, and trying to place pitches on a pitch by pitch basis doesn’t get the defense involved. I saw us as most successful when our boys just put the ball over the plate and only fooled the batter with speed. When they invite the opponent to just put the ball in play, our fielders stepped up to the occasion every time. But making them stand around while hoping we get a strike out deadened their focus.

Action makes for short innings, and short innings breed confidence.

None of this could have been said about last year’s team, which is why I expected us to be better by attrition. I expected a trip away to a regional with the hope of maybe making it to a SR and beyond. Now I expect a trip away to a SR with the hope of going to Omaha and maybe pulling it together while there (a la Fresno a couple years ago).

I expect next year’s team to be better than this year’s. Wetzler, Schultz and Duke will make Gaviglio’s improvement from last year to this one look like child’s play. Child, Booser and Zarosinski will be in the mix as well. And we’re going to just restock with some dandies in the 2011 Class. If Susac stays, I say we win the conference going away next year. If he leaves, I think we end up about where we are now with fewer losses.

I expected next year to be the beginning of another three or four year cycle of us going to Omaha, but maybe this is the beginning right now. I think this team focuses better when they have better opponents. They pay more attention in film sessions and listen more closely to what Casey demands of them because they know any mistake will likely the game. They just forget that the same can happen against the lesser teams like Nikegon and USC.

Nothing good comes from getting swept to end the year in terms of this season’s success. But it is what it is, and it should at least make them circle the wagons and focus on their opponents from here forward. The only good that comes from these last two series is that next year’s team will know to stay hungry every time they step on the field. They’ll know what it feels like to be frontrunners, and they’ll know what it takes to stay in front.

      • I was likewise surprised that OSU was picked eighth before the season, but they had a lot of question marks. I would have expected to finish in the middle of the conference and get a #2 seed someplace. They lost some deadwood and had excellent speed in the outfield, but offense was still suspect and it was tough to figure out who would stand out in the infield.

Pitching was expected to be good but not excellent. That turned out to be the case. Nobody really knew whether Gavigilo would return to his 2009 form, and we knew they had guys who could become dependable starters but they hadn’t yet emerged. In a sense they still haven’t figured out who the Saturday and Sunday guys ought to be for certain, but the starters have enough in them that they can manage to get through.

I think you have some interesting comments about the relationship between the pitching and the defense on this team. I haven’t been able to watch many games so I can’t opine for myself, but intuitively it makes sense. At the very least, it seems like Osich was doing better before he tried using breaking balls. And I know that Gaviglio historically has depended on getting groundouts, with the sink on his fastball.

  14. Another thing we forget is that the NCAA loves frontrunners. If you’re not there at the beginning of the season in any of the contrived polls, then you put yourself there by mid-season like the Beavs did this year. If we won 10 straight to end the year 38-17 with an RPI of 30, then we’re happy to be going somewhere for a regional as a 2-seed. But backing into a 1-seed with a five game skid sure tastes a lot better in terms of getting some love… and who we beat to get there.

When the football team realizes this formula, they will receive the love at the polls as well.

  15. I think there are three regional hosts who have a very good chance of not advancing based on how they’ve been playing and who they host. aTm probably watches the Zonies walk out of their regional. South Carolina gets a very good Stetson team and a NCSt team that can jump up and bite someone pretty good. And Florida gets teams that they either couldn’t beat during the season or they were lucky enough to play at home very early.

  16. A friend of mine in Florida does some betting with a local bookie and he sent me a message looking for info, Creighton is +130 to win the Corvallis Regional on his sheet.

    • Sweet, my internet provider is Qwest which isn’t a supported IP of ESPN3. They were just bought recently by Centurytel, but they don’t look to be supported either. I feel like it’s 1950 and I have to go the rich neighbors’s house that actually has a picture box to watch the big event. Phuk.

I don’t get how an internet provider can’t even access information like that? What happened to Net neutrality.

Hi, I live in Egypt and my internet provider doesn’t allow me to have access to Facebook…what’s going on out there? A parade or something!?

      • Comcast hired a bunch of bums to show up early and populate the crowd when the FCC had net neutrality hearings. So when legitimately concerned citizens appeared an hour or so before the hearings, they were refused entry by the fire marshal.

        Welcome to democracy.

But that probably has less to do with this situation than does Qwest being a bunch of self-serving cheap-skates who wouldn’t know customer service if it gave them a happy ending.

There are likely several workarounds involving proxy servers or simply an email registration. i would Google “qwest espn3 workaround” and see what it gives up.

      • Supposedly, if enough people complain enough to Qwest (also my IP) they will access ESPN3. However, I don’t know how many is enough. I once asked a rep and he said Qwest cost less than other IP and that’s why we didn’t have access to ESPN3. HA

  18. Wandering through a blog on the Chicago hoops scene, I got wind of something else. It’s probably old news by now, but I went to see what Nikegon fans are whining about, and tracked it back to the source.

    Can you say schedenfreude?

  19. Makes you wonder if the post awhile back by Angry (RE: medical marijuana lab owner with all the Duck gear) has any substance as well.

    • I’m sure it does, but THAT’s the kind of stuff I think is more prevalent. Tressel got burned because he was given concrete evidence of what was happening and he decided to cover it up first, then lie about it later… even signing something that said, “I’m not lying” while he was lying.

In the Navy, we got a blacklist for everywhere we’re supposed to not go on every port of call. I promise you that some guys went to these places just because they were on the list. Others went there for the very reasons they were on the list.

I wonder how many NCAA athletic programs have a blacklist.

And remember that Masoli’s last straw was the pot possession while driving… with Darron Thomas as a passenger… who knew nothing about the pot… wink, wink… nudge, nudge.

  20. Off topic,

I know it’s angry’s favorite, but we’ve asked for Riley to do precisely this. The Beavs are the first to offer P/K combo Kenny Allen from Fenton HS in Michigan.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srhjxfqE5ww

Before I watched the tape, I thought we offered as a guaranteed P starter as a frosh. Now, I’m impressed with his K abilities as well. He seems to have all of Romaine’s power, and a lot of accuracy… while kicking off the turf. I would be a major fan of this kid since our staff is finally coming around to knowing the importance of the specialists in this game. I think he can be better than Paulescu, and his size makes him a candidate for bigger comparisons than that.

I can see our two-deep in two years:
    K – Romaine, Allen
    P – Allen, Ashton

… all of them scholarship players. When was the last time that happened? He might come in behind Romaine, but I think he might be good enough to push for the K position as well. And I know Romaine has a major leg, but I think Allen’s is slightly better while being three years younger. I would slot him for KO duty at the very least.

I’m also happy my suspicions that Ashton would have to be Danny White reincarnate aren’t true.

Of course, now our staff has to go out and close the recruiting deal. Allen’s good enough to see offers from anywhere.

  21. Also off topic,
    Look at p 12.
    http://www.osualum.com/s/359/index.aspx?sid=359&gid=1&pgid=836

I don’t think I mentioned this last month, but OSU sought and was granted Community Engagement status from the Carnegie Foundation. We are now one of only 50 US universities to hold this designation while also holding a Very High Research Activity designation, and one of only 23 land grant institutions.

I take it with a grain of salt on the academic side since it’s an elective classification. UW, Cal, SU, Zona and Nikegon are the Pac 10 schools who are not dually classified. But I also know that it’s a classification sought by schools within those university systems (and by their peers). So I’ll take the good for what it is.

  22. Ok…
From what I’m hearing, Nikegon’s problems might be far beyond simple schedenfreude for us. I’ve heard that it might rise to the level of us playing in the Pac 11.

Hmmm… the president of the NCAA is formerly the president of UW, taking over for a former president of Nikegon. THIS won’t throw any gasoline on the contrived fire Nikegon fans think is a rivalry between those two schools.

      • No. I’m saying that people are making it sound like Nikegon won’t have a football team for a couple years.

I think the NCAA won’t come with any death penalty ever again. But USC’s cuts in scholarships might be something Duck fans could only wish they had when this is done.

        • I don’t hate Oregon quite that much. I understand that in some ways we could benefit from UO’s suspension from all football activities, but as sports fan is that really what we want? I’d liken that to hoping for the best player on the oppositions team gets hit by a major injury. Doesn’t seem in the spirit of sport to me.

Not suggesting you feel that way Jack. I think you’re just giving out the info. you have, but I am curious to know how other people feel. Would you really like to see your arch-rival suspended from football activities for a number of years. I don’t harbor that much resentment, it’s not good for the state, the conference, and the growing reputation of the rivalry. I dunno, what do y’all think?

Also can we begin speculation on what uncle Phil will do when is pet project is put on ice for a prolonged period of time, and does that influence the NCAA decision… if there truly is one coming.

          • I actually don’t feel one way or the other about Nikegon other than in direct response to their words and actions. If I lived anywhere but Eugene, I might not care about them at all except when they play the Beavs. Then, of course, I would root against them.

But here in Eugene, they’re an everyday topic. And a lot of their fans don’t have the ability to talk proper smack, whether it be straight up or more subtle. Their love for their teams (except track, those fans are WAAAYYY cool) seems to be only viable when compared to another teams’ fans, not their team itself. If you thought Beavs fans were guilty of blind ignorance for the mediocrity some of our side seems to settle for, then Duck fans had their eyes and brains surgically removed for their fandom.

Every step of an investigation into their program is not only a surprise to them. It is in no way possible, because what they believe can’t be untrue. They take it as a personal affront when the subject is even mentioned.

There is a degree of schadenfreude to be had, but it’s not against Nikegon itself. It’s against that segment of their fandom which doesn’t have a clue where to buy a clue and would save their money and simply scream “HATER” at everyone if they ever knew.

Nikegon will get their own just dessert. My take on them is that they cheated, and cheaters eventually suffer the consequences for their actions. They don’t need me to be happy or sad about it. It will just be what it already is. Live by the sword/die by the sword. They obviously only wanted a couple years of glory attached to this go-round of cheating, or they wouldn’t have been so brazen with it. Or maybe they thought they could hide everything in plain sight? I don’t know. All I know is that they don’t get my pity. They don’t get any of my emotion.

And their dependent fans will just get the same knowing smile or bored senseless smirk I’ve given them for the last decade.

If my taxes weren’t spent to build shrines to a bunch of cheaters, then I wouldn’t even be irritated when I was constantly told that my taxes are not spent to build anything for a bunch of honorable saints.

And if OSU ever did the same things, I wouldn’t stop being a fan. But I would see it for what it is and demand a purge to stave off some of my disappointment. Then I would burn any swag bought with pride after a major bowl appearance or league title which might have been tainted. And I would laugh off any rival’s attempt to get digs in by citing my school’s faults to a tee and telling them the NCAA should slam them with their full weight.

I wouldn’t necessarily like it, but I’m a “RIP THE BAND-AID OFF QUICKLY!” type person. A lot of the Nikegon fans I’m talking about don’t even know their heads are still fully mummified due to their surgeries.

          • I see a difference in injury to a key player (which I never ever wish for) and a suspension by the NCAA. A sense of justice (and just a little hate for the significant portion of obnoxious Uck fans) leads me to support even-handed discipline when the facts support it.

I agree a multi-year suspension of UO would not be good for the state, conference, and rivalry and doubt if the NCAA has the backbone to impose such a harsh penalty. If gross violations warranting such a suspension were found out it seems to me we’d have heard lots more by now.

As to uncle Phil’s response, I don’t feel it productive to speculate on that; except to say that I have no doubt his influence will have an effect on any NCAA decision.

  23. I’d like to see justice…if they cheated, hit them with penalties that are fair.

If not, then the goal is to see OSU beat Oregon’s best…you’re correct there.

  24. I would feel some considerable loss of scholarships is appropriate if this is true. I don’t think they could fall that huge with Chip running the offense. But if it was enough to give us a great shot at a couple Pac-12 North titles that would be a great opportunity to seize if BDC got aggressive and Riley went all out. With USC still hurting for a couple years we could have a shot at our dream scenario of hosting a Pac-12 championship. Nothing else could raise our national profile as much as that. Since this year won’t be easy we may have to wait til 2012 to have a better shot but it would atleast seem possible. The NCAA is serious about infractions so you get what you tolerate if you are UO.

    GO BEAVS!

  25. A&M on SEC clock to June 21st?

I wouldn’t mind. I think it is almost a lock in the future anyway and the future might as well start in 2012. We would probably get another few million added to our atleast 30 million once the Pac-12 Network deal is added. Since they have to figure out the teams involved and the easiest and most balanced way is to have A&M go SEC and then the original Texas 4some go Pac-16, A&M may as well make their final decision. If A&M longer term prefers Pac-16 then Tech might get an SEC invite, especially with Tuberville as head coach.

  26. I want to see them punished accordingly if they find violations, regardless how much it might hurt the conference. It pisses me off to no end to see someone gain advantage by cheating and I think there is smoke in too many places to assume otherwise in this case. I agree with jackbeavs assessment of duck fan wholeheartedly. If sanctions are coming, it will be duck fan who is most suprised.
