Cleveland Wallace visited Washington this weekend. Nice to see Heyward keep his word and not pursue his guys. /sarcasm

Seumalo had a great trip to USC. I think we're going to be okay, but might have to sweat it out.

Lawler had a good trip, but he is visiting Washington State next week.

Shelton didn't commit on his trip to Nebraska. Good sign. He's also thinking of calling off his TN trip. One can read that many ways. Personally I think it is good news given he didn't commit or rave about Nebraska. 60% chance he signs as of today. We'll see.

Kendell Hill, Brice, and Noland are all solid after their visits.

Caleb Smith visited ASU this weekend–it seems to me he's looking for any reason not to be a Beav, and the ASU co-eds might do the trick.

    • Lawler is probably just a slight lean.
We didn’t back off Keller…he is just from the Fresno area and wants to stay. OSU planned to trip him to Corvallis next weekend, so they definitely did not back off.

  1. Oh sorry my bad, I thought he was scheduled for this weekend (Keller), and didn’t show and then committed to the new coach. Definitely sounds like he wanted to stay at home, also wonder if he was a greyshirt candidate?

I think that is good news on Shelton, especially if he cancels UT visit. I am worried about Wallace visiting UW.

I know Noland had a great visit and Hill enjoyed their visit, I don’t know about Brice.

I read somewhere, possibly here, about somebody DE-DT from Maui but grades might be an issue?

  2. So next weekend looks huge, with Reshawn Hooker (who visited Utah this weekend- no committment news), Chris Solomon who LOVED his Colorado visit, Chris Young, Calvin Tsonga, and Markus Pierrce-Brewster all sched to visit. Do you have any insight on these guys?

    • I think Hooker and Young have some legit interest. Young is listed as a DB, but will likely be a LB or S in college. Tonga is already a commit. The other guys…long shots–wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t show.

DE Nate Lese visits next weekend. Dustin Stanton, Zack Robinson, and Chris Miller also visit.
It’s musical chairs right now…this can all change any second.

      • Iese… not Lese. He’s a good TE. If Smith leaves, I wouldn’t mind having Nate instead.

I, and seemingly every other recruiter out there, seem to think that Nate is an awesome DE prospect.

        And he is.

But I think this kid can actually be a star at TE.

    • Beaver Byte – a few suggestions. First, show the BDC court for comparison right below yours.

Second, please do a mock-up of the giant killer uniforms with the narrower white stripes on the helmet as you have it, but make the logo on the helmet the block “O,” not OS, and make the facemask orange.

      Thanks!

As for the recruiting, this seems like the things that happen in Corvallis, one of the top lineman in the country, and a position of desperate need, with a dad on the coaching staff, might go to USC….I certainly hope not.

      • Just hearing how much he loved USC.
And nothing countering all the gushing yet. It would be nice to hear he liked the trip, but he is still solid with the Beavs. Nothing like that, though, and USC has been in-home. Meh.

        • Got to say, Coach Seumalo is a great dad to allow conference rivals into his home to recruit his own son… Can’t say I have much faith in the guy as a coach though…

      • Exactly. I think you have to fire Seumalo if his son doesn’t sign. You shake his hand for being a good father but a poor recruiter.

        • Joe Seumalo’s duties as a father trump those as a coach, plain and simple.

If your kid’s always dreamed of going to USC and you strongarm him into being a Beaver, he may always resent you for it. What if he doesn’t get drafted, and he goes to his grave believing that USC would have got him to the pros, and his dad killed his career?

Riley and co. should go after Seumalo with everything they’ve got, but this isn’t on Seumalo Sr.

          • As a coach in his shoes I would give my son as honest an evaluation as I know how and let him make the decision. It’s his life and I’m not going to use my position of authority and respect to live my life vicariously through him.

If he likes girls, nice weather, prestige, and lots of Ws, USC is no contest.

ORST will all but guarantee him PT and probably the best shot at the pros.

          • Have you ever been to USC?

Grey clouds are better than brown… um… clouds. And you don’t leave campus unless you have reliable transportation.

I understand the whole LA thing, but that image is borne out at UCLA on the west side. USC is in a place that rivals only West Oakland and East St. Louis for places you don’t want to go for a burger.

          • You are exactly right about the USC campus. I wondered about all the “LA” crowing myself. USC is right in the middle of crime infested gangland. It wasn’t that long ago a football player took a stray round from a drive by right off campus. It’s like a tropical island in the middle of a cesspool.

          • Haven’t been to USC, but I have heard that about the area.

Even if you don’t leave campus though, you’ve still got the weather and the girls (who are similarly stuck there). Is the smog really that much worse at USC than elsewhere in LA?

          • I agree about duties as a father trumping duties as a coach whole heartedly. An objective evaluation would agree with everything you have said, but my concern as a fan is: if he can’t sell his own son (as a coach) then how can he possibly he good for the program. Obviously there is a large conflict of interest here but you have to look at it from both perspectives.

    • If he goes to USC my guess is he’d rather play for a team that has a shot at the national championship and is capable of beating the ‘ucks.

        • We leave out the D in ducks because they don’t deserve the D because they don’t have any defense. It’s their offense that wins them games and it bites them in the butt. look at every loss they’ve had under chip kelly. They’ve lost because they couldn’t outscore they’re opponent.

          • It sounded better in my head. What I meant to say was that the ucks play offense to win games…not defense to win games. Oregon state relies on defense to win games, but can’t win when the offense doesn’t produce TD’s. Just the opposite with the ucks. They have to rely on scoring TD’s to try and win cause they won’t win under CK’s system with relying on their defense to make stops. CK’s defense is best suited against either slow offensive players or fast spread offense teams…not hard nose teams. Wisconsin just didn’t show up on defense nor did their QB keep his head in the game. :/ oh well.

          • Agree. Alliotti has always used “undersized” players to create team defensive speed at the expense of losing to teams that have size and speed (a la LSU, Ohio St, Auburn, et al).

Also, those teams victimized the offense too. I have this general belief that if you can score 30 pts in a game, the loss should be pinned on the defense. The Ducks don’t generally lose when they score more than 30. Their defense is average, allowing them just enough leeway to win shootouts but not enough strength to win a close low scoring game.

  3. I’d rank the CB probabilities like this:

    Brice: 80%
    Shelton: 55%
Wallace: 30% (likely winds up at Washington…(or Boise State))

OSU never signs good corners. I was really impressed with this group, but Riley seems to have no sense of urgency in keeping them.

    • Wow, Sark has no excuses, he basically has gotten everybody he wanted and has an “open checkbook” to throw at them to get him. He better win with the staff that he’s paying for. Of course, he still is probably saving money since he let Holtz and his 4 million go….

Gotta think we should do the same with our hire of KHJ’s replacement. It’s getting very competitive in the new pac12. Better sheet or get of the pot?

    • Sark has shown a greater sense of accountability and committment to winning on the field with his coaching decisions in the last three weeks than Riley has for his complete career at OSU

  4. I just retweeted this but…

#OregonState soft commit Cleveland Wallace is currently on a visit to #Washington and having ‘great time’ so far will be home Monday

  5. Now that Seumalo is “looking” I wonder if the Chipster is going to be knocking on the Seumalo’s door.

Now that would be a hoot if the ‘ucks stole Mikey’s best recruit in years, perhaps ever.

    • This is a PR nightmare even if he stays with the commitment…………….which I don’t think he will. Coaches son basically calling out the program as second rate.

      • Second rate might be giving the program more credit than it deserves. The way things are headed I’m having a hard time thinking of a FB program which will be worse than the Beavs in 3 or 4 years.

Can you say doormat? I can and I don’t like it one bit.

  6. Why is it that we have our top 4 recruits as “soft verbal” and none of the other northwest schools have any. They seem to get kids to make up their minds while we say, go ahead and look around for something better. If we lose any of those 4, we will be in trouble. Cal, Stanford, UW and Oregon are already having better classes than us and that means the gap is getting wider. You would think that with a promise of playing time we could get some good players.

    • I’m not sure why Oregon’s class is considered as highly as it is. I think Cal and Stanford are the two killing it this year.

But UW? I would take Turpin and Dean from their list, and they can have the rest. Their class is a shambles right now, which is likely why Sark is trying to hoard all the recruiters in the conference.

  7. So we have an opening on the staff, do you think these hires change the search? Inoke was Plan B for Sark, maybe we should go back and see if we can get him or Lewis? But the main thing here is that we are going to need to kick the salary up a notch to grab somebody. Will they do this, or will they go after a young up and comer?

    • Had my Duck friend who follows Scout go look at the posts there, and he just told me the discussion involves people like Tony White (read this site?) and Osia Lewis at SDSU. But he also says that one of them came up with an idea for moving Locey to the DB’s and hiring Mike Johnson as a co-OC.

There’s some outside the box thinking for you.

Apparently UCLA still owes Johnson his last year in pay (400k?). So OSU could hire him on the cheap, and he would still get paid. Then when we finally get TV revenues we could pay him a real salary.

  8. The thing that is most disconcerting to me is that Mike Riley has experience at USC and Alabama he knows what those programs bring to the table. They are first rate programs, and both have some built in advantages, but why has he not tried to bring some of the other elements to our program to upgrade it, instead of going the “Moneyball” route?

I think fans need to realize that more than ever that we need to invest in our program or we will get left behind. Before UO started winning anything you saw big donors invest in the program, instead of running away, they threw even more money into it and has been successful for them. Programs like UW, USC, Cal, and UO can throw crazy jack around because they can get 60, 80, 90 thousand into the stadium each week. BDC needs to realize he needs to spend money to make it, so we better look at upgrading NOW! UW, Cal, Stanford all have new stadium upgrades hate to say it but we have fallen behind. It that reflects on recruiting, and the ability to get quality kids. IMHO.

  9. I thought there was an unwritten rule that coaches wouldn’t transfer within the conference, at least directly. I know that is not always the case, but this seems to be happening a lot this year. Seems like you are burning some bridges to coach against your former bosses.

    • Nice guys finish last.

I’d be jumping for joy if Riley was aggressive like that and went after the best coaches/recruiters. I have a feeling Sark could give a rat’s ass about other coaches opinions of him.

  10. Ha! All the Cal beat reporters were at Monty’s weekly presser when the Lupoi news broke, and they ditched that room in a hurry.

Shaq Thompson 50/50 between Cal and UW. Jordan Payton, Ellis McCarthy, Aziz Shittu, Cedric Dozier, more… all thinking about Cal differently now.

    Poor Cal.

  11. My take on Sark:
He just signed his walking papers.

The guy can’t coach. It’s why he’s trying to hire great recruiters and sign a great class–to make his job easier. I think these players will all underperform under this staff. AD won’t like that they’re shelling out big money for bad results. I give it 2 years.

    • It’ll be interesting to see if he can actually coach. He has made some questionable decisions in the last couple of years. Maybe he figures if he has enough talent and depth it’ll make his decisions less critical.

      • Hope you are right Angry. If so the next coach will have some serious talent to work with. Lame Kiffen and him make quite a pair. Not as hate worthy as Kiffen. Not riding daddy’s gravy train.

        • Kiffen is a bad coach, too. He did do a good job keeping those guys focused and competitive, though. Probably not easy given they had nothing to play for. Bad coach, though. Maybe as he matures he’ll become average…saw some signs of that this past season. Still consider him bad, though. Sark is a really bad coach. Worse than Kiffen, though more likeable.

    • I would give it a couple more years than that. The new stadium and coaches will give it a push for a while. The money for the coaches is coming from a donor’s checkbook, so I don’t think that will be a problem. He’ll probably get to fly close enough to the sun before he burns and crashes.

The guys he’s hiring will be always looking for their next job. Notice that not one of them has made an upward move. If they want to increase their pay any more than what they’re getting, then they need to be looking at major schools and promotions.

And Sark still needs to hire an OC.

      • Wilcox and money got Lupoi with Sark pulling strings in the background. This will hopefully put pressure on him because they are still paying Holt and staff big bucks. Nussmeyer may have seen the new money flowing and got jealous. The one thing about all the money is that the existing guys with contracts will not be happy. Look what happened to Heyward when the newbies came aboard at OSU. Your comment about Sark flying too close to the sun may be right on, but will take some time for UW to dominate or implode. How do you think Heyward feels now knowing that Lupoi held out for 500k? There will be a power struggle between Sark and Wilcox if one side of equation prospers and the other side lags. Though I am not a fan of Holt and am a fan of Wilcox, the change seemed very slick and orchestrated, a bit too Machiavelli…just like when Sark ran off with Holt at the beginning of his UW tenure.

    • As CR has proven if you’re playing teams with inferior talent poor coaching isn’t as noticeable. Sark is bringing in recruiting talent which could recruit talent that will far exceed most of the rest of the Pac.

      • ASU doesn’t register as one of the ten toughest teams we’ve faced this year. How do you explain that loss? At least Idaho was a decent team, but that loss was forgivable. And we’ve beaten the best team we’ve faced so far in league play… the one with the best coach in the league as well.

Enough about that… Sark is going bonkers. I can’t wait to see who he gets for OC.

          • Go ask Coach K that. When his teams struggle from the 3 point line they lose, especially in the NCAA Tournament. Does that mean he’s a bad coach?

          • Duke’s last two games, in which they beat Georgia Tech and Virginia they shot 6-22 (.273) and 5-20 (.250) from beyond the arc. My point was that the Beavs haven’t found a way to win unless they’re shooting lights out 3’s e.g. against Cal 61% the other 5 PAC-12 games no higher than 35%.

          • I think you have something of a point, but I don’t think it’s the whole picture. While we have missed on a lot of perimeter shots, we have also missed a ton of just plain wide open mid-range and post shots as well. That’s why I’m with the players right now. They’re slow-footing it on the court, and they’re still getting looks which they could make in their sleep. But they are missing everything, and they just look more and more frustrated every time they miss.

So, to your point, if the players were making the shots they’re given inside the arc, then they would find a way to win when their perimeter shots weren’t falling. But their shooting seems to be intertwined. If one is falling, all are falling… and vice versa.

They’re not taking advantage of what they’re given, and they’ve been given a lot. Sean Miller said this past weekend that his UA team played the best game of the season followed by their worst game of the season. I hate bringing them up, but the Ducks have been given more than the Beavs, and they manage to take what’s given to them. Their games are not worth watching from a hoops standpoint. But they do manage to score more points than their opponents.

But it’s an attitude thing. The Ducks defense leaves the same players open on the perimeter that the Beavs do… more in fact. They leave them open for days. But I think those shooters decide to do their tax returns against them, and they look like Reggie Miller against us. That tells me that they don’t question their abilities against us. They trust themselves. And that kind of confidence only comes when your opponent shows doubt in themselves.

That’s what I saw against ASU. I saw our team walk out on the floor with an, “It’s going to be one of those days,” look on their faces. Then they continued to reinforce their own doubt as the game progressed. Opponents know that look, that feeling. It happened against Idaho and Wazzu also.

And shooters are the first to pick up on it.

You could be out of position all day on defense, like all three of those teams were against us. But if your attitude and effort are less than theirs, their shots will fall, and yours won’t.

I can’t explain why this is. I’ve seen it too many times. I saw Baylor do the same thing last night at Phog. You could just tell a couple minutes in that it was going to be a bad night for the Bears. Every team has those games. But good teams get out of bed the next day and resolve to change their own fortune. But it’s something they can only do for themselves. Coaches can try team-building techniques. Or they can try an intervention. But it’s up to the players to get back to where they were to start the season.

  12. Angry, can we get a tread to complain about beaver basketball. They are really pissing me off right now and must discuss with my fellow tourtured fans.
