Versatility is the theme this year. The great thing about depth is it nullifies injury. That the Beavers can mix and match situationally is their best asset. On that note, it's extremely difficult to predict a lineup, but I think Casey will go with something like this:

  1. Joey Matthews CF
  2. Kavin Keyes 3B
  3. Jake Rodriguez C
  4. Danny Hayes 1B
  5. Michael Conforto RF
  6. Dylan Davis DH
  7. Ryan Dunn SS
  8. Ryan Barnes LF
  9. Tyler Smith 2B

Versus lefties, he can do something like this:

  1. Joey Matthews CF
  2. Kavin Keyes DH
  3. Jake Rodriguez 3B
  4. Dylan Davis 1B
  5. Michael Conforto RF
  6. Ryan Dunn SS
  7. Ryan Gorton C
  8. Ryan Barnes LF
  9. Tyler Smith 2B

Matthews is a guy I'm not real high on, but he's got decent speed, and is probably the best option in CF. We'll probably see a lot of Max Gordon, too. I love Conforto's potential, and I actually like Dylan Davis more as a hitter (DH, hopefully he can play some 1B) than pitcher, even though I believe he was signed as a pitcher. What stands out, as in years past, is the lack of OBP, particularly at the top of the order. Team speed also is below par. Very pesky, versatile lineup, though. The other weakness is inexperience; it's the downside of running a top 25 program. The draft kills your squad, and the teams are always young–plain and simple.

On the mound, I'd love to see this:

  1. Scott Schultz
  2. Matt Boyd
  3. Jace Fry

But I have a feeling we'll see this:

  1. Ben Wetzler
  2. Jace Fry
  3. Carlos Rodriguez/Riley Wilkerson

If Adam Duke were healthy, he'd probably get a look in the rotation. As it stands, he'll probably be eased into relief work. Fry will likely miss the first week or two, so maybe Casey will put Schultz in there for a while, but he seems to prefer him in long relief for whatever reason, and he likes Boyd at the end of games, despite Boyd (and myself) believing he'd be better off as a starter.

A lot of nice arms in the pen, but outside the usual suspects, they're young. Riley Wilkerson could mature into a RH setup man or situational matchup at some point. Same for Carlos Rodriguez as a lefty. Upperclassmen Cole Baylis and Adam Duke could make moves, too, once healthy. And Dan Child pitched to a 1.06 ERA (42 innings) in summer ball. Let’s add him to the bullpen mix.

Overall, this is a good squad, but also incomplete. The strengths are defense (notably up the middle with Dunn/Smith), good arms, a pesky lineup, and versatility. The weaknesses are inexperience (i.e. freshman/JCs who will have large roles), lack of OBP and SLG (though newcomers Davis and Conforto could provide that), and average team speed. Expect the usual station to station baseball and small ball.

Is the top 25 ranking justified? If the youth performs from the start and improves by conference play, then probably. I'd personally rank this team around 35th best in the nation, with reassessment possible after seeing them in-person this weekend.

      • Don’t know who I was thinking. Just wrong. Maybe he will play 1B.

Wetzler, Fry and Gonzalez all vying for starting roles? Is three lefties a viable, or even preferred line-up? I would think that Schultz throws on Saturdays just to mix it up.

        • Well, like I wrote, I think
          Scott Schultz
          Matt Boyd
          Jace Fry
          Is the best rotation.
I just don’t think Casey will do that. Schultz will almost definitely start versus Santa Barbara, but once Fry returns, I think he might move to the bullpen. Casey likes him in long relief. Maybe Schultz will impress so much that he stays in the rotation–I think that would be wise. As for the #3, I’m not sure anyone knows at this point. But I do like Rodriguez.
Wetlzer frightens me. He was out of many games early last year. Doesn’t have great command or confidence–hopefully he improved over the winter. I didn’t check out his winter stats.

          • Wetzler was fresh last year. Maybe consistency expectations were a little high. I for one would like to see them all pitch this year before I make judgements. Baseball is very different than football. The mental component is so important in baseball and can make a guy totally a different player.

    • Davis is the most interesting prospect. He has a huge arm, but a masher bat. I’m wondering how Casey will use him. I think they need the bat more…but Casey loves him as a P. It would be ideal if he DHs full-time and pitches situationally. What do you think?

      • Davis is that throwback type of player who can play a position as well as situationally pitch. It’s probably smart to DH him regularly in order to keep him from tiring out as a frosh. But i think he’ll take a position play next year and the year after.

Him and Conforto in a line-up with Keyes, Jake and Danny should be fun to watch.

        • Davis is that throwback type of player
Agreed, I love the OF/P type player.

If he can play 1B it would be ideal. Hayes can hang in there versus lefties, but it’s not his strength. Last year they had Berberet to spell him, but I don’t see a clear candidate this year unless Davis can do it.

    • Did he retire? I forget. I know he was playing baseball in Wisconsin (summer league) after the season, but I never heard about him again. Maybe he’s with the team, but just not listed on the roster due to error. I’m really not sure.

      • I doubt it’s due to error. Could be like John Tommasini and sit out the year. Tommasini sat out last season and is playing this year as a RS Sr.

          • Yeah, I’ve tried finding out some info and can’t find any. Same thing happened when I tried to look up what was the deal with Tommasini last year. It’s strange but I assumed the deal was the same with Nash. Really don’t know what’s up with him.

          • I’ve noticed that the Corvallis G-T is doing a poor job so far covering OSU baseball. I believe Aaron Yost is covering this sport (not Kirkpatrick or another writer). I’m underwhelmed by the coverage so far.

I’m wondering too, why Boyd hasn’t been tried as a starter. It’s like Casey would rather have a shut-down bullpen than a strong starting staff. I remember when Dallas Buck spent a season as a closer, before moving to starter. I think you could get more quality innings, but Casey is the coach.

          • Casey is on record, this year, saying Boyd asked to be a starter, but he’d prefer to keep him in the pen. Sounds like there’s some conflict there.

My stance on Boyd starting/closing is pretty simple: Boyd isn’t “wasted” for two games per weekend if he starts for this reason: you need a quality start to even get to Boyd. And who’s going to give it? If you can get one quality start per weekend from Boyd, you take it and worry about the end of the game when you get there. I’d take > quality innings over

          • Buck was the starter for the first half of his frosh year, but he was a wild child. Casey moved him to closer to harness his focus, and one could say it was a very wise move. I think he was something like 3-6 in nine starts until he moved to closer and just destroyed the opposition in the 9th inning.

I think Wetzler is a lot like a lefty Nickerson. Only Wetzler has more control and an extra pitch. I remember Jonah as a frosh was a bit of a wild child as well. And he did get knocked around quite a bit.

I don’t think we have to worry too much about getting to the 7th or 8th this year. But I don’t think having Schultz, Boyd and Bryant all on the bench makes much sense, especially if Duke will be joining them later.

One thing is certain. i would hate to have to choose the rotation. We look like we have a lot of live arms this year.

  1. Anyone know what bats the team is using this year? Nike is supposed to be out. I saw those bats perform last year. The ball carried but then always died at the end. It really held the team down at points last year.

Hopefully they go back to the DeMarini’s.

    • Dead bats help the Beavers or any team that plays small ball and relies on pitching. I’m not sure why you’d complain about them. I think the bats where part of the reason they overachieved last season. Also, it makes the game more like MLB/wood bats, which is a good thing.

      • I’m all for making the bats more like MLB. No more cheap home runs. You have to really get the barrel on it to hit it out. I like that. Also puts more of an emphasis on executing offensively, that’s never a bad thing.

      • Let me clarify my statement. I’m all for the dead bats but it seemed like the Nike bats were more dead that some of the other BBCOR bats.

UPDATE: After a little research it looks like Nike has released their teams from having to use only Nike bats because the Nike bats were not performing as well as other brands.

        • You’re not alone in this. Just looking at where the BBCOR bats are produced, my sensibilities would be sated if we were to use DM’s.

Imagine that… 12 of the top 20 power hitting teams in the NCAA’s last year used DM’s… the only BBCOR bats made in the US… made in Oregon no less. Is it the tech? Or is it quality control? It reminds me of Nike’s attempts to strong-arm the NFL into using their crap footballs years back.

          • If I recall right we used DM bats in our CWS championship runs and after uncle Phil chipped in some money to keep Casey here we switched to Nike bats.

          • Looked it up, and we did use DM bats for our NC runs… and Wilson protective gear. I don’t think equipment contracts kicked in until recently though. Our players were still preferring DM bats as late as 2009.

  2. From Cliff, regarding Garrett Nash:
“Playing at NCAA Division II Dixie State College close to home.”

Strange, I can’t find any report about it.

    • So you’re now a made man?

btw-all caught up on Bbad. Can’t wait for Season 5. sounds like they’re dividing it into 2 separate 8 episode mini-seasons and they will be the final in the series. Probably good to quit while they’re ahead.

      • Was that ending great.. I thought, as intended, that Gus survived. So who does Walt battle next year… MIke?

I agree quit while they’re ahead. There was a Sienfeld once were George was determined to always leave them “wanting more”. I think they knew when to shut it down.

The Office should have shut down when Steve Correl (?) left.. this year sucked. We gave up on it. JB

        • Hope you didn’t just spoil it for any other readers on this site.

I saw a sneak preview type ad on youtube for season 5. It doesn’t reveal much but might be worth your time. Looking like meth is out and pills are in?

          • Ya dude, put SPOILER!!! lol.

I am a season behind on BBad because I have to wait for it to come to Netflix. I don’t know where else to get it only started watching it a couple months ago. I love the show, crazy to see Bryan Cranston do this role after the Malcolm in the Middle role.

    • very sleepy. Sorry I nodded off for a few minutes. Four hour games with 20 minutes of activity, lots of conversation and an occasional burst of energy, if their forced, I don’t get it??

I guess its consistent with Angry’s new sloth analogy that we excel at slow paced sport.

But then again I hate soccer too. JB

  3. Anyone know what happened to Brian Stamps? I don’t follow baseball nearly as closely as football/basketball. Did Stamps go to the MLB through draft? I loved his speed.

  4. take a week…a month off from thinking as much about the Beavs. Dedicate that time to learning more about something. How cars work. Look into something you’ve always been curious about. Building friendships beyond what they are. Make exercise outside a habit. Read. Sit silently and try not to think about anything. Breathe.

    • Not sure why you’re posting it here or who it’s aimed at, but this is good advice.
I’ve been spending the last month and a half getting back into photography and learning how to grow and maintain my first beard ever. Sadly, between myself, my family, and my lady Beav’s family, we have had three fairly serious medical issues to deal with in the last two months, which has lead to a lot of worrying/bad days. Basically, this new year has sucked cow balls so far. Hoping the law of averages starts…averaging. This brings up a good question: if I die, who should I leave the site to in my will?
JackBeav and Warren seem like good candidates if they want it.

CB Mishawn Cummings is suspended for breaking team rules, coach Mike Riley said.

        • clarification- this is a different cummings then the WR that made a few catches (his one against wazzu was beast) this past season right?

          • LaGrone wasn’t likely going to see the field next year. Just about everyone on the roster and most of the kids coming in probably get more time than him. And I’m counting redshirts. Storey should finally be forced into his natural position at OLB. Why he stuck around the DB’s is beyond me. So now I just wonder about Sanders and where he ends up.

And remember that LaGrone has been here a full four years plus one term. I don’t know if he has yet, but he could also graduate and move on somewhere where he could play immediately. And he is a likely candidate to receive a sixth year of eligibility after 2012. He could have a graduate degree paid in full if he plays his cards right. Not a bad deal.

I wasn’t very impressed with the time Garner got last year either. And I’m hearing that Sapolu and Bays will likely be the two for him to beat out at the one position he would have competed. He was just going to be taking up roster space.

Garner was a great student in high school. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he too has received a degree in his three plus years at OSU, making him also eligible to play somewhere immediately… with two years of eligibility left as well.

          • I’m thinking the coaches have been having discussions of this sort with these kids (and others? Katz?) since last fall. Forced attrition looks a lot cleaner when the kids involved leave with a degree.

          • There was speculation that Riley was 4-5 kids over the 85 limit and it looks like 2 of those spots have resolved themselves by either a nudge out the door or self enlightenment or maybe graduation and no desire to keep playing.

          • I think the most intriguing question this year is how the OL shapes up. I really like the idea of putting Juice in at Center flanked by Seumalo and Phillipp on either side. Then maybe you bring in Gavin and Garrett, iwth Kelly and Jackson in rotation? In this scenairo it would be possible that your most valuable OL position (Tackle) might not be your strongest/experienced. However, I like the idea of building your line with the best players inside – out.

          • Or maybe Hasiak at tackle. He probably would be better, because he is somebody we need to play right away, because I would be leary of his grades, like Glover. But he can come in than you have some more exp on the outside?

          • i didn’t realize lagrone has been here that long. storey has actually switched to linebacker during the season. i too was unimpressed with garner, i can only hope that he wouldve been pushed way down on the depth chart by some of the new guys had they stayed anyways.

  5. OT- its so fucking week (weak?) that a 15 win oregon state team and a 17 win stanford team can’t get their game televised in this day and age

    • The problem is that ROOT is nothing more than the Husky network, CSN is the Duck network and we have not won enough games to put the spotlight on us. Next year with the new Pac-12 network, we will be on TV.

The Pac-12 is so weak that no one outside of the west coast is interested in our games. Sporting News has only 2 teams (CAL and Arizona) in the NCAA with Oregon on the bubble and UW not mentioned this week. No teams in the top 25. This is the weakest our conference has been in decades! No team will get by the second round.

  6. No, I’m not sure a stream exists for this game. I went to the Stanford website and could not find anything. Sounds like it will be Mike Parker and Gametracker for me.

  7. Well, with me unable to see the game I can’t get upset about a player putting up an ill-advised shot or a player blowing a defense assignment. Those are positives.

    • I’m still able to get pissed at the next no name opponent draining threes on the Beavs. I can see that little Stanford figure on Gametracker!

  8. Sounds like terrible perimeter defense again, but Roberto is on fire. According to Parker, his dad is watching him play college ball for the first time ever.

    • Stanford has cooled off from the field, so maybe you have a chance. I would really like to see the Beavs run away from a decent team in the second half. It hasn’t happened this year has it?

    • Yeah… this is NOT Stanford’s pace. I’m not watching, and I could feel their legs go away as the half wound down… and Jared’s got stronger.

If I’m Dawkins, I don’t know what to do to slow them down. Do you leave Berto because Jared’s starting to warm up and won’t stop if you let him get started in the second half? Or do you hope Jared never gets the feeling and try to locl down on Berto?

Coach Rob has to work over Bright and Randle on our offensive sets. He needs to noodle those legs and start running.

  9. This little moments have just killed the Beavs all year. Cunningham goes only 1-3 at the line and then Stanford goes down and hits a wide open three. Five point swing in 15 seconds.

  10. I just do not get this team. They are careful with the ball all first half and then when it counts they become a turnover machine. Down by 9, starting to slip away. I can’t believe this team might go back to Corvallis at 5-10 in league play.

  11. Ok, dammit…here is an opportunity. Cunningham nail BOTH foul shots, run a solid play, get a hoop…game is tied….play lock down defense. Update..of course this didn’t happen. Cunningham made only one foul shot, they took a quick three and missed, Stanford has gone on the run that will probably win the game.

  12. There is plenty of time left in this game. Stanford is not that good and can easily fade down the stretch. A couple of Starks 3’s and we are back in it.

  13. Cunningham had a steal and dunk, when he dunked it the ball came through the rim and hit Jared’s head and went back through the rim. At a stoppage the refs huddled and decided that the dunk didn’t count. Parker lost it and was screaming at the refs off of the mic.

    • I didn’t think that play would matter, but now it might. Be interesting to see it. I don’t know how they could not have reversed it based on what Parker was saying.

Anyway, now we get to hear Craig talk about the great comeback and how this is a learning experience for his young team on the road. Who would have thought two months ago this team could not at least finish 9-9 in this pathetic league?

Sometimes I really hate being a Beaver fan.

      • It definitely mattered. Stanford got the “miss” and scored in transition the other way.
The Beavers didn’t play good enough defense to win anyway.

        • Well that’s wrong. The call was right if the ball didn’t completely pass through the net before bouncing back. But then the correct call would be a stoppage of play and possession to the other team at the point nearest the violation, which in this case would have been basket interference by the offensive player.

As I understand it, the score was disputed, which made the refs stop play and take a look on replay. At that point they should have called basket interference. All subsequent play would then be disallowed, and the time lost would be placed back on the clock to the point where the violation occurred.

Now I have to go look at who was reffing this game.

        • Collier makes a lay-up vs Stanford and Starks hits a jumper vs Arizona they have 7 wins already. So, your “prediction” could come true because of luck. Also, who cares if you predicted something right? Congrats?

          • It was a response to the guy who asked who could have predicted the Beavs not finishing at least 9-9. Well, I predicted that and thanks for the congratulations. The PSU game was the indicator that foretold this team was doomed, but nobody wanted to see it.

    • It’s that time of year for schools to do housecleaning on all the minor violations that occurred during recruiting. Throughout the two month signing period, many of the so-called “ticky tack” rules are self-reported.

It’s not like the Navy, where we were told every rule was written with blood. but I can understand the rules being in place for a reason. And being aware of breaking any of those minor rules seems to be enough for the NCAA to give most schools a pass.

  14. Not having seen the game, I’m going to blame the 1-3-1. The missed/not missed dunk may have cost the game in the end. But we shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place.

You know… when I played the 1-3-1, I was taught that the baseline runner was the key to that defense. That position had the responsibility to cover both corners, both blocks and flash to the elbows for help. The topside trap was fun and all, but the baseline was the key.

Maybe it was because I was the one running the baseline, but I made myself

    • … important by being everywhere i was required to be.

The last time the 1-3-1 really worked with any efficiency was two years ago when Seth was topside. He was great there, but I never saw him as the key to that year’s defense. I watched the baseline runner cover everything, keeping the opposition from dumping anywhere on the baseline and forcing yet another topside cross-court pass.

That runner was Jared two years ago. He moved to the wing last year, and it all fell apart. Everyone assumed it was because Seth was gone. But I always thought it was because Jared was gone, lost on one side trying to primarily trap near half court.

I used to love the 1-3-1, but now I just can’t stand it. It used to be a weapon. But now it’s like a dead jellyfish lying on the beach getting poked by a bunch of kids with sticks.

      • You’re on to something there, 1-3-1 creates some flashy steals, but eventually the wide open threes give the advantage to the opponent. Let’s be realistic here, the defense has been a huge disappointment this year no matter what alignment they are in.

        • They’ve shown weaknesses in certain sets. But the 1-3-1 has been a nightmare for two years now. It’s so predictable that I just shake my head when I see two passes ahead.

Getting burned in man defense happens. Hell, getting burned in any defense happens. But zones are notorious for giving up open treys. That’s why the term “zone buster” exists.

I’d rather have opponents driving and altering shots and passes in mid-lane traffic than allow sup-par teams to equalize the game by dropping easy shots that every high school kid practices for fun.

  15. I looked up the self-reported violations mentioned by FatDog, and they’re the usual “talked about a PSA before they signed” violations.

But there’s no self-reporting on the USC game at Autzen when LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul were there. Remember that several PSA’s talked about going into Daddy Phil’s box and meeting those four. I think Nikegon thinks they got away with that one because those four are not boosters, and Daddy Phil was not there, which would have been a clear violation.

But those PSA’s getting to go to any seats or boxes or areas during game day proceedings which they would not be allowed to do with the general admission seats they are provided is also a “specifically prohibited” action.

In other words, when you or I go to game day at Autzen with our GA tickets, and we end up next to these same recruits, then we deserve all the access to any area in the arena that they deserve, and vice versa. If they get to go up to Daddy Phil’s luxury suite with their GA access, then so does anyone with GA access.

It really doesn’t matter who is in those spaces. It matters that access was granted to those spaces.

    • Do recruits really get only GA tickets? I would think that every school would want them in reserved seats and not having to find an open seat in a GA section where there probably are not even enough seats to sit together unless they are in their seats an hour before game time. i would think that they are in the locker room before the game to see how the coaches work with players and then take pre-assigned reserved seats.
I was told that high school football coaches and players on non-official visits get available GA tickets. I bet players on official visits, especially those who bring family, have reserved seats.
I remember seeing Joe Montana, his wife and son on TV a few years ago in really good seats at Autzen. Those were definitely in a reserved section.

      • Recruits on unofficial visits are left to the wind. They’re on their own for getting tickets. I would suppose a Montana type might be able to wrangle some decent seats anywhere he might want to attend a game.

NCAA bylaws stipulate GA tickets and access on game days. I think most schools would want their PSA’s to hang out in the student section anyway. Most places have reserved seats on GA tickets nowadays. I think only the students are subjected to first come rules anymore.

        • I’m sure there are also allowances for those on officials to have access to locker rooms and athletic offices before the games as well. I just assumed that would be a normal part of the visit. Besides, where would they go if they lost their tickets?

    • If your question is will he find a way to win one of the three in the series, I say yes. He is a great pitching coach and will have his staff ready. Beavs still win the opening series.

      • From what I’ve read, they have one decent to good pitcher and one pretty good CF… and not much else. I have a feeling they’re going to be playing a lot of frosh this weekend.

  16. When you make $900k plus per year, do you really need to be out on the road doing a book tour in order to make ends meet? When your offense is predicated on screens and cuts to the basket for high percentage shots, do you need to have guards casting off at long distance with minimal penetration into the paint ? Can you afford to play little or no defense and expect to win?
Can you afford to not have your best five on the floor at one time, no matter what positions they play?
