Utah is terrible, so they should get it. I’d be “okay” with a winning season and NIT. Doubt they’ll get an NIT invite unless they win the next two and two in the tourny.
id be thrilled with a NIT bid. im actually ok with a CBI bid just because they didn’t earn either of the first two bids, they got to go because of craig robinson’s connection to the gazelle group. this year with another win or so they’ll have had enough success to actually earn a bid, not saying it’s a very difficult accomplishment, but unfortunately this may serve as perhaps the the fourth best season in the past fourteen or fifteen for the program, and that’s something i guess.
I think it will be interesting to see if CR can develop Moreland. It seems like Moreland has the raw skills to become a beast in the P-12 by his junior year if he has the right coaching.
Big if, coaching is a real?. Have seen little technical improvement in player skills this year. Poor passing, abysmal defensive rebounding, horrid ft shooting and an offensive scheme that looks like it comes out of Dixon rec center have not improved although we have more athletic players which have provided better results. I could understand if Jerad goes pro this year because he isn’t going to become a better technical player with this group of coaches.
For some reason, it seems like the Beav athleticism overwhelms these guys, too bad they’re the only team in the league intimidated by them. Glad the Beavs played them twice!
I shoud be happy for the win, but good lord can’t this team focus for an entire game, is that asking too much…they gave up 53 points to Utah in the second half.
I’ll take it, but they played a pretty weak non-conference schedule. Did Towson or Chicago St ever win a game? I look at it this way, I used to complain about the WTF non-conference losses to less talented teams, now I complain about WTF losses in the P-12. They should at least not have lost to WSU and Stanford at home nor ASU even though it was on the road. I guess that’s some progress.
I might get pounded for this, but if JC hasn’t stepped up a a leader by now I don’t think he’s ever going to. Can you really teach that? Nobody on the team seems to really play with that fire you see from great teams. They need one talker, one guy who is going to scream and fist pump when he makes a key three pointer. One guy who has his teammates back on the court. The Beavs have too many mellow personalities or they are all playing scared out there.
you can downgrade the accomplishment if you want, but the fact remains a season this good is almost uncharted waters for this program the past twenty years. not saying it should be celebrated, but still, it does beat the shit out of last year.
To be fair, the game was never as close as the final score except on the scoreboard at the end. The Beavs came out angry and focused. They were up 31 in the second and put it in cruise control. And they were still up 22 with 3:33 left, when they subbed everyone in for garbage time.
This was still an upgrade over previous seasons. But it was a disappointment relative to expectations. Yes, we were “this close” to being 20+ in the win column. The proverbial “hump” is the next barrier.
And they can still make some noise to end the season if they can find it within themselves. Expectations are shot now. So it’s more of a “what have we got to lose?” situation. But just when you thought you saw everything….
It’s still too early to look at next season, but we do add four very nice pieces to the puzzle. And if Moreland works on his upper body and hand strength, he would be a completely different player.
Jack: “And they can still make some noise to end the season if they can find it within themselves. Expectations are shot now. So it’s more of a “what have we got to lose?” situation. But just when you thought you saw everything….”
This team knows that they have the ability to beat any other team in this conference and hopefully they go into the Pac12 tournament with payback on their minds. They should be highly motivated against WSU in the first game. In the game at Gill, WSU for a lack of a better term “punked” the Beavers. They were way more physical and seemed to be talking a lot of trash.
To me Moreland appears to have a big upside if he puts in the work and CR can coach him up. I’m a little skeptical as I don’t see either Burton or Brandt having made game changing strides over the last two years.
Jack
Make that 3 pieces to the puzzle. Last night Maika Ostling had only 12 points and 3 rebounds in a class 3A game where he was by far the tallest kid on the floor. He is a huge project.
The redshirt Daniel Gomes will share the center spot with Burton and maybe Brandt next year.
Ostling needs at least 1-2 years before he can be of any help in the PAC-12. He may never be at that level and transfer to a smaller school like the Wiley kid who went to Oregon a few years ago.
Well, let’s put his line in context. He was keyed on (in as much as Valley Catholic could key on him), and the opposition tried to play a stall game. 12 points in a 33-18 State Tourney quarterfinal win makes a little more sense. We’ll see if this afternoon is any different.
That doesn’t mean I think he’ll be any big impact next year as a frosh. But he will get some time. He is a project, but he also has a lot of nice tools which translate to the next level. He’ll have a better career path in college than any of the bigs we have playing now.
Note: I consider Moreland more of a SF project as he’s been used. He could move inside or out depending on how much he hits the weights in the off-season.
Remember this kid has no real competition at this level as Tebutt is no longer at Horizen Christian.
The Pac-12 is so much more athletic than anything that he has seen a 3A and even kids from most Oregon 5A and 6A don’t play well their first year. Jones and Ross being exceptions and they never were question marks.
I think that he fits the mold of McShane.
McShane for all of his lack of pure athletic skills still does a serviceable job for the . One could make a strong argument that he is more of the spiritual (not biblically) leader of this team than anyone else out there.
Fyi… friends who are fans of other teams in the Pac are worried about OSU making a run. I tell them it’s not likely at this point, but many of them insist that we could snap and go nuts suddenly.
I don’t know if the Pac gets four bids this year. Hell, I don’t know if we get three. Virginia is on the bubble with a really good season, a high RPI and a strong SOS. UA and Nikegon need to win two games in the Pac Tourney for either to gain a bid IMO. That means they have to play each other in the final.
Crazy has happened before. It’s that time of year.
CBI….CBI!!! With a worse case scenario of 16-15 we should be a lock for the CBI. Their annual collection of mediocre 500% teams is perfect for us. Imagine a first round home game against Cal State, Bakersfield. I’ll be there, goofy glasses and all.
We need the CBI!! Post season experience will give the program; extended practice and playing time plus greater recruiting exposure. Just imagine where we could be in three years if we can just get into the post-season! JB
What? This all happened in 09 and look where we are now… never mind.
Not to mention, but I believe, the CBI is a “play to pay” tournament. It’s hard to image it recouping the expenses. I would hate to see the new Reser Stadium Lost and Found Center put on the back burner.
In addition, Joe Burton, a.k.a. “los zapatos mas grande de turquesa” referred to the CBI as “rinky-dink.” I guess we know were the players are on this one. JB
I think they’re tired of it. They also have higher expectations of themselves, which is good. Now they just need to translate those expectations into reality. It’s not too late to do so this season, but it also is.
The pay for play aspect of the CBI isn’t much of a worry. The outlays are easily recouped with about 2000 in attendance.
I think that 2000 figure is a little low. Last year I read that Oregon had about 5000 per game and barely made any money.
Also if last nights attendance is correct, 3,643 against Utah, then getting that against Rinky Dink State in the CBI could be a challenge.
The Duck figures don’t show that the students who attended did so because their fees allowed them access, like they do for the regular season.
And the TTATT has been a financial and cultural failure, with the exception of maybe two games, since it opened. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I miss Mac Court’s charm.
I went there for the Elton John concert and I thought the building was fantastic. I would never say that about Mac Court.
My brother in law was at last nights Oregon/Colorado game and said the noise level was finally like that of the old Mac Court.
He has seats in the lower level and compares the comfort to much better than the Rose Garden.
It may take some time but that place may turn out to be better than Mac Court.
Don’t mention the Elton John concert to my wife. She’s still pissed about that one.
The building is fine. The bowl is WAAAYYYY too steep, and sight lines suck from the upper level. But the lower level is fine for viewing. Where it works is when you’re on the floor. The sense you get from the seats is nothing like that from the floor. It feels like everyone is on top of you… but not as loud as Mac was… not even close.
glutten for punishment here; game link?

okay you are forcing me to napkin eater and the digital characters on gametracker. feeling sprry for myself already
attempt at being positive: a winning season sounds mighty nice
Utah is terrible, so they should get it. I’d be “okay” with a winning season and NIT. Doubt they’ll get an NIT invite unless they win the next two and two in the tourny.

I get so tired of these three or four minute stretches where they don’t do anything. Immediately let a bad team back in the game.
I think it will be interesting to see if CR can develop Moreland. It seems like Moreland has the raw skills to become a beast in the P-12 by his junior year if he has the right coaching.
I agree, Moreland has huge upside and he hustles on defense too.
Big if, coaching is a real?. Have seen little technical improvement in player skills this year. Poor passing, abysmal defensive rebounding, horrid ft shooting and an offensive scheme that looks like it comes out of Dixon rec center have not improved although we have more athletic players which have provided better results. I think the Beavs are going to win this one.
These guys make Burton look like a stud.
How in the hell did Utah beat Stanford….I don’t care if it was in Salt Lake City!
Makes no sense. Utah also controlled a game against Arizona in Tucson for about 35 minutes and probably should have won.
For some reason, it seems like the Beav athleticism overwhelms these guys, too bad they’re the only team in the league intimidated by them. Glad the Beavs played them twice!
Nice to see the Beavers killing a team that they should. Hopefully they don’t take their foot off the gas in this one. They can win this one by 40
And let Barton, Murphy, et al get some playing time.
Barton needs to make an F-ing jump shot…I think he’s O for league play.
He’s made a grand total of 5 shots in Pac-12 play
And I think they were all on layups or drives to the basket,
He does make a mean meatball.
Where was this team last Sunday?
just got home from work to watch the second half–I love this team!
and the beavers were 17 point favorites-wow!
just sayin’ if you get a chance watch the highlight of Jared’s slam in 2H
I shoud be happy for the win, but good lord can’t this team focus for an entire game, is that asking too much…they gave up 53 points to Utah in the second half.
Yeah, only won by 10 after leading by 25 or so. I’ll take it but…
up 31 early in the second half.
win is a win is a win
It just doesn’t give you any confidence when you have to play a talented team. This years Beavs proved they can beat bad teams and that’s about it.
meh… at least its more than we can say in years past. this is the third time since 1990 they’ve won 16 games.
And they had 10 of those wins before PAC play. Such a facade of a number.
I’ll take it, but they played a pretty weak non-conference schedule. Did Towson or Chicago St ever win a game? I look at it this way, I used to complain about the WTF non-conference losses to less talented teams, now I complain about WTF losses in the P-12. Agree with all above. No killer instinct. JC needs to be a leader next year.
I agree. Sometimes it does happen with seniors, although this year he was a senior by default.

You apparently don’t remember Brandt’s frosh year. he was a deer in headlights who then reacted like an armadillo.
Notice I said game c
I’ll give you Brandt, though prone to do a disappearing act. Burton remains an enigma.
Jack

Only the practices and game experience are valid reasons to continue in anything but NIT or better. It’s not a reward.

An old beav fan told me with a wry smile that it stood for the “crappy basketball invitational”.
