Recruiting Picking up a Little…?

Beavs land Jordan Villamin today. He's a 3-star WR with a Utah offer.

D.J. Martin wrote on Facebook that he was considering OSU. This is where that rumor on Rivals started yesterday. Hard to say how much there is to it–could have been a joke for all we know.

Dashon Hunt is a 4-star CB interested in visiting the Beavs. I believe that interest is genuine, but I've heard Nebraska is in the lead right now. Hunt's film is impressive. It's hard to have faith in the staff closing the deal, though. CB and DT need to be priorities, and they need to sign legit talent, not the "coach 'em up" types who take 3 years to see the field. This year is a crossroads on and off the field.

Keep in mind the mainstream media needs to keep fans interested or they'll lose ad revenue and/or subscriptions, so even the slightest interest will get a more positive spin than it probably deserves. On a scale of 10, recruiting is a 2 right now. It was a 1 a couple weeks ago, so it is heating up, but we're not even close to a slow boil yet.

  1. Recruiting is heading …up? I dont see that. What, we now have 2 recruits where we had none a couple weeks ago? We will end up with recruits, …seems to me thats not really the point. What we need, to have hope for re-establishing ourselves, is a class that ranks with the big boys. A class that isnt bottom rung.

So how do we now rank with the rest of the conference, if we are moving up?

    • Unless we show some life on the field this season, there is no reason to think the class will be anything but bottom rung, and probably no reason to think it will compete with the big boys, regardless of how things go on the field! I think the best we can hope for is stabilization: get back in the low level bowl picture, finish with a mid level recruiting class, and then just hope to build back in to relevance in 2013 and 2014. At this point, it is not clear if the program is going all the way off the cliff, or will get a grip on something. Not exactly a recipe for recruiting success.

  2. I like that Bolden is already spitting out these types of quotes:

“Yeah, I may still take some trips, but I consider my commitment to Oregon State to be very strong,” Bolden said. “I plan to get busy and start helping build my class of teammates at OSU.”

Reminds me of Cooks after he committed. And it looks like Bolden needed less then 1 week to deliver his first 3 star. Maybe Riley needs to put him on staff.

    • I have often imagined in my head what it would be like to be a big time recruit. I imagine I would still be going to Oregon state because that is the family school I am someone who likes to build their own legacy. I like what bolden is doing by helping the recruiting, in my imaginary scenario that is what I would do. Keep it up bolden, we still are behind in recruiting.

  3. We don’t need recruits, we need talented recruits. We need at least a couple of 4 star recruits in each class just to stay competitive with other P-12 schools. I know not everyone buys into the star rating crap, but there is some truth to how a player gets rated. There are diamonds in the rough but there are also players that everyone agrees have the talent to play at the P12 level. Right now the make up of this years class is very similar to Colorado and we know how competitive they are.

    • I wouldn’t put too much stock in a player’s ranking yet. At this point in the recruiting cycle a player’s star ranking is pretty much based off of which schools have offered him (ie. a USC offer automatically puts a kid at four stars whether the recruiting site knows anything about him or not). A lot of the players that are being given three stars right now could actually be four star caliber players that just haven’t gotten a lot of exposure yet. I completely agree we need actual talent and not just bodies to fill a roster, but I don’t know if I’d believe a recruiting site’s evaluation of talent over our coaching staff’s evaluations at this stage.

      • All that matters is how many stars they are when they are on campus and by the Ike they play their final game in an osu uniform.

      • “…I wouldn’t put too much stock in a player’s ranking yet. At this point in the recruiting cycle a player’s star ranking is pretty much based off of which schools have offered him…”

        Imho you’re kidding yourself.

        But that’s up to you.

  4. Accurate though it may be, please don’t ever use the phrase ‘mainstream media’ here… you’re making me feel like I’m visiting FauxNews, and that place is full of idiots.

  5. Is there any news that is anything but pap? BBC news?

And I repeat that it looks to me like we still rank dead last, with just 3 or 4 recruits. And…since we need to feel good about where we are going, we need to see a class that ranks at least in the middle of the conference, given the yardsticks in use. Yes, you never know. A 5 star guy can get run over tomorrow and be worthless….a walkon can shine.

But all of Beaver fandom needs signs that we might recover. And dead last in the next recruiting class isnt cutting it. So I am not impressed with the “things are picking up a little” theme of this thread.

      • If all we got was a dozen zeros, then wouldnt some of them have to play?

The point is, no matter how guys turn out, there is a ranking to each recruiting class. How they are thought of by the powers that be. When you go 3-9 and appear clearly deficient in talent in places like the line and defense, you look for heavy recruiting to bring up that talent level. You need a recruiting class that at least appears to good.

Maybe I should wait until its all in, but so far it aint lookin good.

        • Yes,if you had a dozen zeros some of them would have to play. And you would have an awesome record, like…oh,I don’t know…8 wins in two seasons?

    • What really gripes me is it seems like about this time every year OSU gets a commit from a 4 or 5 star player who doesn’t have a chance in hell of qualifying.

Imo this is the kind of player who should be a silent commit but no it’s announced and the fans soil their pants because player X has committed to OSU.

Again jmo, I think the athletic department makes offers to these kids just to keep the fans interested and not too pissed off because of how poorly the recruiting is going.

  6. Did I miss something, is this site dedicated to Beavers and knocking conservatives? Yes there are conservatives on Fox, but half the time I want to throw a brick at the TV, so they are not all conservative. The thing is when you compare Fox to all the other networks that have zero ( 0 ) conservatives, then Fox is conservative in comparison. On the other side Fox doesn’t appear very liberal when compared to all other 100 % liberal networks. On the real subject at hand it appears we will never again have a good recruiting class. But I wonder what the difference was with the Tosido’s bowl team which was to a large extent recruited by Riley. How could he recruit so well after the team was in the toilet for so long? Maybe the difference between then and now is the “lifetime contract” and as Angry has mentioned, Riley’s depression after the 2009 civil war. I think the only way to get urgency in recruiting is for the head coach to know his job depends on it. I don’t think any of the new PAC 12 coaches walked into a lifetime contract and they will be recruiting and coaching as if their jobs depend on it ans it does.

    • I don’t know the exact numbers off the top of my head but I believe a lot of the star players on that Fiesta Bowl team were actually JC recruits that were brought in by Erickson. I’m pretty sure that was also one of the OSU teams that led the NCAA in personal foul penalties and that wasnt going over well with the higher-ups. Now we have a team full of nice boys.

        • welcome back Fightingbeaver

So players like the Rodger Bros. Steven Jackson, Sabby, Ken Simonton, Yevonson Bernard, Wheaton, Sammy Straughter, Sean Canfield, Kieth Ellison, Victor Butler, Slade Norris, Mike Hass. Those were some pretty good players, is it because of good coaching?

          • Rodgers brothers: NO They made the coaching staff look better than it actually was and is.

Same with SJ, Canfield & Hass. The others …………..

          • I agree, good players make coaches look good. A thing that kind of bugs me about some fans is that when players do something right or good, the coaches get none of the credit. But when a player does something wrong or doesn’t perform the blame goes to the coaches. The players job is to make the coaches look good, and the coaches job is to make the players look good.

        • Bullshit.

A TEAM is as good as it’s leadership. Individual players are who they are. Steven Jackson would be Steven Jackson no matter where he went to college.

      • inferring that the “higher- ups” are happier now with “our team of nice boys” is just insulting, or it would be if these “higher-ups” you refer to were actual people. it isn’t even true, just take a look at some of the recet law infractions committed by current players. a desire to have a more well-behaved group than the one erickson had in 2000 is NOT the problem with oregon state football.

    • I think it’s unfair to call Faux News either conservative or news. It’s radical hysteria selling the public on being anti-liberty, openly bigoted and paranoid. It is to news as Archie Bunker is to… um… news. If self-proclaiming conservatives align themselves with Faux, then they are not conservative.

I may not be able to tell you precisely what is conservative. But at least I know where I am.

I don’t know of any network out there which is liberal and calls itself a news network. So you’re comparing apples and oranges there. And the major (actual) news networks are so lazy about their business they don’t even wait to air that Roundup commercial until a segment other than the one telling us that Monsanto is just the neato-est company ever and growth hormone in milk is hunky dory. At least they used to wait a day or two before they aired the ads which butter their bread.

I look at Mark Hatfield as the quintessential conservative. This is the guy who was going to vote for a balanced budget law in the early 80’s until the Rebubs took him behind closed doors and he emerged saying he would not vote for a balanced budget law… ever again. Then the Repubs wanted a balanced budget law in the 90’s (same people, different polls). Again, they took Hatfield behind closed doors, and he emerged basically with both birds flying.

It cost him his seat, and he was replaced with one of the worst Senators in Oregon’s history. But he stuck to his guns and did what he said he would do in the face of a changing political spectrum.

To be fair, when I hear “conservative” I think only in the fiscal/economic sense. So Faux News is extremely liberal bordering on anarchist to me. I don’t even bother with their social engineering ploys against non-WASPs. Those people are just woo hoo woo hoo loony tunes.

      • How do you guys know so much about a network that you seem to despise? Unless it’s a case of “keep your enemies closer” then here’s an idea, stop watching and listening to them. I don’t like Fox news either. After I made this determination I haven’t listened or watched them since.
Don’t let their advertisers have any influence on your buying decisions. If you’re watching or listening then you are being influenced whether you accept it or not.

        • How can you not know them? I hear their talking points in discussion at the check-out in a grocery store, and I have to ask the old white bigot behind me where he heard something so goddamn anti-American and guano loco at the same time.

Seven times out of ten, it’s Faux News. Various AM radio pee pee tuggers populate the other three.

They all make Art Bell’s callers and guests look like geniuses.

          I miss Art Bell.

      • I knew you were going to chip in Jack, I was just waiting, and no surprise you’re a flaming liberal. Do us all a favor and shut up about politics, it’s a no win, and you’re long winded bullshit is only interesting when it’s about football.

        • Hey Bob! When you’re just popping off at me with one fallacy after another, does that mean you’re giving me fallacio?

I think it does. Thanks for your head… Bob.

          • That would be funny aimed at a female, but the name “Bob” clearly indicates male. Most guys enjoy “head” as you so quaintly put it, but you enjoying it from a dude makes you queer. You have issues …Jack.

          • Whoa! I talk about you opening your mouth and stroking your gums with weak fallacies, and you take that to mean something sexual? You’re pretty twisted there little dude.

And if I were queer, as you so quaintly contend, then I would own it proudly and know there are people like me in this world who don’t give one cold damn what I do in the privacy of my own home, unlike perverted tiny heads like you, Bob. Issues indeed.

Thanks for your head Bob. It’s as nice as all the other pea brains in my menagerie.

        • Oh… and I stand next to William F. Buckley Jr. on this topic. When you allow the lunacy of others to make a mockery of your political beliefs by usurping them, your political beliefs become a mockery.

    • The ‘liberals’ are placed on Fox News in a way that makes their target market want to throw a brick at the TV. That way you get pissed off enough to go out and attend tea party rallies.

    • I think you hit it right on the head — The Riley then was a guy creating his career. The Riley now has seen the peak of his career — gone to a number of bowls in a row, established himself as a Beaver rejuvinator, and taken a stint in the Pros. He then got a reward-contract and can now kick back and ride it out.

Its not about Corvallis being a bad destination, its about coaching energy and desire. Look at Erickson’s later career. it also went way down hill. We now have a head coach who imo no longer really cares about winning.

  7. Angry………..please place a moratorium on the political horse shit that is being posted. I don’t give a rats ass how anybody feels about Fox News. This site is for bitching about the sorry state of our football team.

  8. Nice Jared Cunningham article out of ESPN Dallas. It’s looking like he’s in position to compete for a starting job now that Jason Kidd and Deron Williams are playing in New York. He’s have to beat out the talented French PG Rodrigue Beaubois to earn that spot, but at least it’s looking like he’s an injury away from getting major minutes as a rookie.

  9. At Sunriver this weekend I sat around the pool with some Cougar and Duck fans and they both expressed disbelief that Riley was not under more fire after the last 2 seasons.
The Cougar fans thought that OSU would go after Mike Leach and were relieved when we didn’t.
They truly believe that he will make them into winners very quickly.
They also said that they have been to 2 Rose Bowls in the last 15 years. I did not remember that but I checked and that is true. They believe that they can go back to the Rose Bowl with Leach. If WSU can recruit to Pullman, then we should be able to recruit to Corvallis. Our facilities are much better than theirs. Our budget is as big and our tradition is as good. The Cougs said that Wulf was let go because people stopped going to the games and attendance revenue went in the tank. So as long as OSU fans keep going to the games we get to keep the current coach and AD.
The Duck fans said they like Riley and don’t think he can put a staff together that will be able to beat them.
Everyone agreed that the team on the rise this year is the huskies and with their new stadium are going to be a threat from here on out.
So how do we get ourselves out of this mess? I say the focus needs to be on getting rid of BDC he as is the one handing Riley the lifelong contract.

    • It still remains to be seen if Leach can recruit to Pullman. I’ll guess that 2 or 3 of the new pac coaches are gone in the next 3 to 4 years.

      • Hey Bend
What is the general consensus of Beaver fans in Bend? Being a visitor, with other visitors, shows only an outside perspective. You must have associations with others in the area that have an opinion.

        • You have to go through the levels of intensity of beaver fandom. I would group those in here as the highest level of intensity. To generalize intense fans I come across in Bend, they seem to still want to give Riley the benefit of the doubt, and wait and see how this season plays out, chalking last season’s 3 wins to youth and injury. Some are losing interest and drop their investment as to not get burned if they lose more. While it seems like there is a slight edge in Beav fans vs. Duck fans up here, we have to quietly concede to their victories and think to ourselves about how they’ll all be off the bandwagon at some point in the future.

The lower level fans are more quietly loyal. Just seeing it as other teams are better than the Beavs, but they don’t really get into tracking recruiting, strategy, coaching, and personnel. Riley had one of his recent tour sessions up here, but I didn’t hear how that went. I don’t really hear people calling for Riley to be canned, and in general he’s viewed as a “good coach”.

    • Sounds like you did your research. If the Cougar and Duck fans around the pool in Sunriver think our athletic director and head football coach need to be fired, then I suppose they do. Well done.

  10. Since when did being a conservative or an Oregon State fan become a bad thing? If you are a liberal, independent, or conservative, that’s your thing. Why demonize or attack someone who doesn’t share the same beliefs as you? Everyone speaks of tolerance, why not put it to use and practice what you preach? Be a liberal or a conservative, all I care about is abiding by the Constitution. Read it, know it, teach it.

    • good for that guy, sounds like that book is pretty cool. i’m essentially done defending riley’s merits and i’m ready to see him go but i always thought the whole firemikeriley.com movement was kind of missing the point.

  11. Hi Bone…….the players you mentioned above Hass, Jackson, Roger’s brothers to name a few are a unique brand of player. I believe they set their own high goals while playing in high school or before. These players had super talent even before coming to OSU. Not enough credit is given to High School coaches who do a great job getting talented players ready for their next step…..college football. The players you mentioned also could shine no matter who they played under in college. They would probably be heroes in their own right.

But I’m glad you brought up the point…….my statement was in too general of terms. This is going to shock you and Jack, but I believe Mike Riley is one of the best for identifying talent in JC and lower level recruits. I like his style of recruiting by not using bad ethics or the pressure treatment. The sad thing about college recruiting in today’s world is there is little to attract a top contender recruit to OSU if other top college teams are attempting to get the player. A winning coach like a winning team can make a big difference in attracting star players.

Be honest, if you were a 4 or 5 star recruit would you rather to to the U of O or OSU……..let’s see how honest you really are here. I would go to the Ducks for sure. Most big star high school recruits want to end up in the NFL so all the attention such as national tv, BCS bowl games, etc. all help them attain their goals.

A great college football coach inspires his players to go 110% and also prepares the team for each and every game they face. A great college coach inspires and motivates players and fans to the fact that the best and highest goal is achievable. For a coach to indicate publicly any less than that is basically putting the team and college facility down.

    OOOOOOOpsssssssss!

    • This is a fun question, which would I choose if I was a 4-5 star recruit? I’ll give a two part answer.

If nothing in my life changes I easily choose Oregon State, no doubt. 20+ family members have gone to Oregon state, even when I was in grade school jr high I dreamed about playing for the beavers and winning the first national championship and the heisman. Plus I liked playing the underdog role. Also if I was a 4-5 star recruit playing in the pros would be a big goal of mine, and as a receiver, which is what I played on high school, osu offense would highlight my receiving skills more so than oregons. There was never a time in my life where I decided or chose what school to root for, it was always the beavers, and it will continue to be.

Now the second part. If I was in an imaginary realm and I had no ties to a university and I was recruited by both Oregon and Oregon state, I could see myself considering Oregon. They have a lot to offer, from their killer facilities, uniforms, coaches. I would be torn.

Great coaches just don’t grow on trees, if I were someone who was looking to upgrade a coaching position when a good coach is already in place, I would be damn picky choosing one because great coaches are so rare, there are maybe 5 in college football right now. The impression I get from your post is that anyone is better than Riley, he isn’t suited to be a coach. You will never give him credit for coaching but you will be the first to put the blame on him.

And FYI, just because you aren’t inspired by him doesn’t mean he doesn’t inspire his players, unless you have some inside info on that. Also sorry if there are typos did this whole thing from the iPhone.

    • Fighting beav, you better send the 4 star corner, Dashon Hunt, who has OSU on his short list an email. Apparently he has high marks for the coaching staf,f so you better straighten him out.

  12. Lower level talent perhaps. But Riley has almost no ability to evaluate jc talent. Beavs were desperate for o lineman but made zero attempt to pursue Danny Watkins. There are many other examples of missing guys or being too slow on the draw. Ever hear of Aaron Rodgers? Oh I guess that they didn’t need the most accurate qb in the last 20 years, and an excellent student to boot.

    • Agree with you and with Fighting Beaver about certain players that will find excellence on their own. Aaron Rodgers story – what’s not to love about it? I don’t remember the name of the player the Cal coach was scouting when he spotted Rodgers.

    • Wasn’t Mike Riley high on Tom Brady throughout college and into the NFL? I remember hearing that Mike Riley wanted Tom Brady when he was at USC but was overruled. Then Mike Riley wanted Tom Brady when he was with the San Diego but was overruled on that too. Maybe Jack knows the story behind this.

      • Riley did want Brady at USC, but they thought they had their future in John Fox (who ended up being a LB I think), so they let Billy Harris at Michigan grab him. He was unhappy for his first three years, feeling he wasn’t really getting an honest shot at moving up the depth chart. I’ve heard all sorts of rumors about him wanting to transfer during those years. I’ve heard he was considering walking on at USC until Riley was hired at OSU… which led him to think briefly about going to Corvallis. He also considered walking on at Cal, but Mariucci leaving left Holmoe in his wake. In the end, it was Brady Hoke (who loves Corvallis btw) who convinced him to stay. But he still got shafted in the respect department. Maybe some of you remember the Drew Henson Second Quarter experiment while Brady was a starter?

But Brady had a knack for pulling his Michigan teams out of the fourth quarter holes created by Carr’s inconsistent coaching. And Riley liked that kind of play on top of just liking the kid from the outset. In the end, Spanos overruled Riley on taking Brady in the 2000 Draft because he was heavily invested in three QB’s, and the young phenom who couldn’t play was the highest paid of the three. SD just couldn’t justify having a second guaranteed bench warmer.

        • Thanks. I watched a show about Tom Brady’s career hoping that it would mention something about this, but it didn’t.

I would also like to disagree with the concept that many of the Beaver greats would have been successful regardless of where they went to school. I think that argument misses the point on why they were in Corvallis in the first place (who else offered these guys?). It also unfairly take away the credit from Mike Riley & Co.

          • You’re probably right about beaver greats not being the same at other schools.

I’d bet that Steven Jackson and Quizz both would have stayed for their senior years, been heisman front runners and 1st round draft picks if they had gone to better programs with real offensive lines.

          • Jackson was a first round pick, I don’t think Quizz would have been a first rounder regardless of his senior year, unless he grew a few inches, and dropped his 40 time.

          • The only way that either of those guys stay for another year at any other school would be if they didn’t see the field as early and often. Neither of those guys left because of anything other than they had nothing left to prove at the college level and could only hurt their draft status by staying another year.

  13. One note on thinking of fans and motivating crowd at Reser. Remember, under Dennis Erickson the pre-game “men in black” video they would play. I believe they even aired it at the Fiesta Bowl. Even Duck fans I know thought that video before the game was way cool. Guess when that video stopped being shown at games.

  14. If anyone’s interesting in doing this:

    Hello,

My name is Samantha Sharkey, I’m with Pac-12 Network and we’re launching a new series called Pac-12 Classics that tell the stories of some of the greatest moments in the history of the conference. Our first series of games will focus on the many great football games in the history of the Pac 12. We’re highlighting a series of 12 games and several of them involve Oregon State. In particular, in 2006 when Oregon State triumphed over University of Southern California despite USC’s 18 straight road game winning streak.

We are looking for several passionate fans who can talk about these games. What we are looking for is not simply the play by play of the big moments, but rather to bring the full experience of the game to life. Where were they when they watched, what unique things happened during the game, what were there emotions before the game, during and after, do they have any pre game traditions or superstitions. All these kinds of things really add to the flavor of the experience and the storytelling of these particular games.

We are doing interviews throughout the month of July and it would be great if you could help connect us with any fans that you feel would be a good fit for this series.

Thank you for your help and please don’t hesitate to email with any questions.

    • I was at Reser during that singular game. We were still in college then; probably Sophomores and Juniors. I watched my buddy throw up onto the back of the legs of the Beaver fan standing in front of us, who didn’t notice. Then we rushed the field after we won. We jumped around, chanted OSU chants, and just generally exulted. On the way out of the stadium, and not for the first time over the course of the season, I marked a rusting and long untouched bicycle dumped unceremoniously between a bush and a chain-link fence. I took that bike and road it to SouthTown by way of Avery Park, and then I drank some more drinks with my buddies.

      — The recollections of CraigBeav w.r.t. the 2006 Oregon State victory over USC (dictated but not read)

Ms. Sharkey may feel free to adapt my above notes to her purposes. And Go Beavs!

    • Someone should tell the story about the goalpost walking out of Parker after the UCLA game.

Speaking of goalposts, there was the 1972 Civil War post-game party. I was just a kid, but I got a couple good licks in. There was the 1974 CW win, after which we (the fans) all went down on the field and peeled the turf off the concrete (or so it seemed). We didn’t win again until 1988, but that was a good game too. It makes me hope changing the turf starts an “opposite trend” streak like that this go around. Then there was 1998 and 2000 (for us) and 1994 was big for the Ducks, but it was still a great game.

There are always the Husky moments… Don James’ losing to us after popping off in 1985… Lyle’s block… very similar close losses in 1997 and 2010 which could have made a difference in both seasons, etc.

And, of course, there’s always beating USCum.

      • If the Ucla game you are talking about was in 89-90 I was there for that. I think Matt Booher was the QB. I remember we brought in our traditional bota bag 1 liter size, filled with half rum and half coke. I was sitting in the third or fourth row behind the Beavs bench and ABC was there televising the game and they gave us a MNF inflatable football. There was a slight constant drizzle that day on a gray Saturday. At one point in the 4th quarter a security guard approached me and my buddy as we passed the bag to one another. By then our aim was a little inaccurate. She came up to me and asked what was the wet stuff on face? and I said, “It’s rain!” and she quipped, “It’s brown!” I went stonefaced, and guilty as charged, however she just walked away. I think we ended up winning that game 17-16. We all were cheering “goalposts, goalposts” and when the game got over we rushed the field. Security guards gathered around ones around the Valley football center, but they didn’t have anybody on the other end so a bunch of us went to the other side, and started tearing it down by some guys climbing up and jumping up and down on each side of the posts until it eventually came down. I was just cheering on the field and waited for it to fall, at which point we grabbed the posts and started carrying it out of the stadium!

Now I am not a tall guy so in reality I was not doing much holding as I could barely reach the uprights above my head. We took the goalpost to the MU and erected it up in the middle of the quad jumping around cheering, but not knowing what we should do after that. So somebody suggested to take it to SAE’s house. We then carried it through Greek row and then got to the house and put up in their backyard. Then people who were not even at the game, but watched it on tv, were having their picture taken with them sitting up on it. My buddy and I didn’t even get a picture (GDI’s), but we left to go back to the dorm and tell our tale to our buddies.

It was the quintessential college experience, one I will cherish. “It was a great day to be a Beaver”

        • That had to be the most hilarious post-game ever. I was watching security as the goalpost was snaking out of Parker, and they had no idea what to do. It was best that they just let it be. I think Kragthorpe chuckled something to the effect of, “We’ve got more,” when asked about the missing post.

I had a feeling we might win when the entire UCLA team went to midfield for the coin flip. That was pretty awkward. Esera had one helluva game. And when Booher tossed the soft lob to a wide open Pitchford for two, you could hear a pin drop. I think everyone in the stadium was waiting for another classic Beaver fail where the receiver would drop the softest pass ever just because there was nobody within 30 yards of him.

That last drive was something I had never seen before at Parker. The Beavs just handled a national power all the way down the field on a game-winning drive. Everything seemed to work that day.

And the party didn’t end until about noon on Sunday.

          • Yeah, that was probably the best played game we had while I was there. They really played liked well coached unit that day. They didn’t dominate, but they battled and they won most of those battles and they didn’t back down from the challenge or the unknown. The had a really good scheme that day and executed it.

I remember asking my buddy if we thought they could “hang-on” and we both just thought it could happen. I remember going to a party that night over on 16th street and they had half the block filled with students just mingling around a keg in the front lawn. It was pretty crazy. Everybody was just so proud and excited that we won. I think the disappointment was that after that great effort they couldn’t get an effort equal to that for the rest of the season.

          • They may indeed have had more goalpost sections in the hopper, but my brother in law worked for the OSU AD back then and his job was to track down those goalpost sections and return them to the department.

So he had to do this, like, twice, during a fairly long employment stint.

  15. Utah has had some significant holes in the depth chart over the last couple of years. They plugged in a jc tackle (nfl caliber) and jc running back (all league caliber) and brought in a jc qb as a safety valve. Now all of us would agree that the qb has marginal talent. But anyone who saw the Utah bowl game in which the qb threw a last minute touchdown to win the game would have to admit that the Utah coaching staff was able to anticipate positions of need, and find immediate contributors from the jc ranks. How does this compare with our team?

    • It’s not even a full service Walmart. Just groceries. How useless. We already have Trader Joe’s. Market of Choice, 2 Safeways, and a Bargain Market. Last thing we need is more groceries. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a Walmart, but I want a Supercenter!

      • There was an unfortunate suggestion on building the dam that having a wal-mart in Corvallis is a good thing. If you’re all for Walmart, drive to Lebanon. Look at this crock of shit quote in the article: “We look forward to being a good community partner and neighbor here for years to come.” And this one: “As of April 2012, the average wage for regular, full-time hourly Walmart workers in Oregon was $12.99 per hour, the company said.” And how many full time positions will there be? I think by ‘community partner’ they mean partering with DHS to refer staff there for Medicaid and foodstamps. Woo-hoo, you’ll save 10cents on an apple and maybe even more on sweat-shop items! (rant over)

        • I wasn’t really going to go there. There was a time not so long ago when i despised Walmart and the way they strong-armed local governments to get unfair tax breaks and the way they strong-armed businesses to lower overhead (read: move production overseas) in order to be on a Walmart shelf. I applaud Rubbermaid for telling them to take a hike when they saw that the product made solely for the Walmart shelves was vastly inferior to the US made product placed on other shelves. I wish other companies would see the same invisible hand and provide for the consumer instead of for the middle man. But oh well.

I’m past all that. There’s little for me at Walmart in terms of product. I would rather hit up the local mom and pop for something homemade (and already assembled) for 10% more and three times the durability. After all is said and done, I spend 40% on the same product over time as I do at Walmart. Those things on which they can compete with storefronts (electronics, media… did I say electronics?), I have this handy dandy little thingy I like call a computer on which I can beat their prices by vast amounts. Besides, the model variations they carry have no value to me after I do extensive research. It bothers the hell out of my wife, and you might not be surprised, but I do extensive research when I make big dollar purchases. Walmart does not carry those same models, and that’s because their product is first inferior and second varied in order to deny consumers who come in for “same price” guarnantees. I broke a decade long hiatus from shopping at Walmart a couple years ago because I saw they had something I really wanted (and had researched). The item was sold out everywhere else, and when I got there they had it marked up 20% over what they listed. I showed them a Best Buy ad, and the sales child moved seamlessly into a “that’s not the same model” speech. I walked away after ten words.

Then there’s parking, walking four miles to get a product and waiting half an hour for one of four check-out clerks to let you pay for product. And I think I’ve only been asked twice (while looking at XBox games in the case) if I can be helped with anything… including six or seven visits to customer service… naturally, to return defective Christmas or birthday gifts, which has only happened otherwise at Target… once.

In the end, I think Afghan nailed it. There’s nothing special about Walmart’s grocery. In fact, they’re pretty substandard. Within a quarter mile of this location, you have several grocers who provide vastly superior product. Some of them do so at comparable prices. Market of Choice is across the street, and half their product won’t be found on a Walmart shelf. I imagine it will be just like walking into a Walgreens or Rite-Aid, which isn’t a bad model if you think about it. You’re not going there for your staples or anything special. You’re going there to buy the things you would buy at a gas station… and toilet paper, only the prices are realistic.

If anyone wants to talk about how Walmart steals from the public through taxation inequality, I’d be glad to discuss that in the forums. But that would take posts and sourcing longer than this commentary… by ten.

  16. off topic, but it’s nice to see Phil Knight eat his words a little:

    Anna Canzano ?@AnnaCanzanoKATU

BREAKING @NIke to remove Paterno’s name from its child care center via @CBirnbachKATU @darrenrovell Phil Knight stment http://ow.ly/ccjmi

  17. Finally! Knight should get some kind of reprimand for his comments at Joe Pa’s funeral

@darrenrovell BREAKING: Nike is taking Joe Paterno’s name off its childcare center on the Nike campus.

  18. Not unexpected, was hoping Spencer would have come back, alas

@JHuntweet Pat Casey’s staff: RT @Beaver_Baseball: Nate Yeskie has been promoted to full-time assistant coach, replacing Marty Lees. #gobeavs

  19. “Knight should get some kind of reprimand..” I take it you do not believe in free speech and would prefer us to live in North Korea. How about just stop buying their products and let the market decide? You must have missed one of the most important messages or lessons from the report. The janitors were afraid to speak for fear of “reprimand”.

    • @KendallRogersPG
#Oregon’s Jake Reed, #OregonState’s Dan Child, #UCLA’s David Berg each with two scoreless frames, #ASU’s Trevor Wiliams with one IP.

Team USA beat the Dutch 3-0 today.

  20. Back to recruiting news, yikes, the only helping the rest of the league are their scholly limits.

    @BrandonHuffman
As of this morning, USC now has exactly 1/3 of the top 18 players in the country on Scout (that’s 6 for those bad in math)…@BrandonHuffman And to show what they’re doing out West, they also have the #1, #2, #3 and #4 ranked players in the West for 2013…

    • Looks like those 2 years of sanctions have just devastated their program. I wonder how good of class they would get without them.

  21. The Ohio State university ( the lesser known OSU) also on probation is having a very good recruiting year.
So why can’t the Beavs who have nothing but a few DUIs on their record recruit.

      • The truth is, recruits don’t want to go to a losing football program. Don’t you get it yet. You must have your head in the sand. All you do bone is “think” and “guess”…..both are dangerous.

  22. I just purchased a Leatherman (ex-OSU grad) multitool…
    It’s pretty good. Go Beavs.
Now how about writing a check, Leatherman?

      • That’s the one I bought.

My only complaint is that it’s pretty stiff and difficult to get out some of the fingernail tools. Otherwise I am digging it.

        • They always have a break in period. I’ll hit the friction surfaces with some synthetic oil and open/close it a couple million times while I’m watching TV. I have my original leatherman from way back and it’s loooooooose.

          • I actually gutted/skinned/quartered a 4 point bull elk with my leatherman once. The two knife blades and the saw really came in handy that day.

          • Add “killed” to that list and now I’m impressed.
Have you ever performed the no-gut method of skinning an elk/deer? My brother swears by it and the youtube videos make it look easy too.

          • Nah the killing part was Bowtech.

I’ve never not gutted an elk,but I have got em back to camp whole and skinned em with the truck. :D

          • Bowtech man myself!

I’ve used the gutless method before, but prefer not to. I find I’m able glean more meat from the ribs by processing the animal in the traditional fashion. Maybe that’s just me though.

          • Hell yeah I love my Bowtech. Helps that they’re made in Eugene. I try to support the Oregon companies whenever I can.

            -Bowtech
            -Leatherman
            -Benchmade
            -Danner
            -Leupold
            -Kershaw
            -Nosler
            -Noveske
            -Pac-Nor
            -Gerber
-Prison Blues makes good hickory shirts

Gotta watch the labels on some of them to make sure you’re actually getting US made shits. I don’t think I’ve ever been as disappointed as when I saw my first set of chinese Danners.

          • Yeah I don’t think that method is for me…

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms but I’m not into leaving that much meat for the yellowjackets.

Sometimes you just hafta man up and make more trips to get it all out.Even when it’s a spot where we can get the whole animal out the first thing I do is gut it and get the heat out as quick as possible

The video I watched looked like one unlucky knife slip away from disaster when they were digging around next to the gutbag getting the tenderloins out.
            .

          • Jason – I’ve taken around 15 elk, and helped process probably 20 more, and I’ve never gotton one out whole yet. I can get each rib flap off in one piece, including between the ribs. With the gutless method, you either leave the meat between the ribs, or you risk a mess. All told, it probably gains me 10 lbs of hamburger by doing it the old fasioned way…although I do take the topside ham off before I gut – that way you have nothing in the way of that process.

          • I agree about the Danners, love em! I shoot .308 Noslers for the same reason, supporting local companies.
I need to watch someone with your experience gut an elk, my crew leaves way too much meat behind but that’s all I’ve been taught. We’ve just taken the 4 quarters and back straps on my last 2 elk, not even the loins or any rib meat!
How to you store your smaller pieces of meat like the loins and rib until you can process it?

          • I package the tenderloins whole without aging them. Invariably they get cut 2″ thick or so for bacon wrapped filet mingon. The rib flaps and neck meat get cleaned trimmed and go to the freezer…when ready to grind I pull them out and grind with the other burger meat from the quarters. We also flesh out as many strips of meat as we can to make fajitas or stroganoff or stir fry. the main muscle groups with a lot of connective tissue go to grind or canned…which is unexpectedly awesome.

We pride ourselves in our surgical extraction of the meat and in portioning it out to the finished product. It’s very rewarding to control the process from start to finish.

          • I have to ask.

I’ve carried tons (literally) of elk meat out of the Montana Rockies and the Coast Range. I’ve never shot any of them. Creeping up on them is too easy… which is why I get invited to the party… that and the carve/pack aspect.

Which is probably why the kill has to happen somewhere the pack isn’t extreme. Skid poles on level ground over four miles are always better than a vertical quarter mile.

I’ve never butchered. I’ve hung it and seen it enough that I think I can do it in a pinch if asked. I’m intrigued by the mention of skinning an elk with a truck. I’m thinking a tree was involved.

          • Oh… there was supposed to be a question there.

How do you get burger from an elk? I know how we do it. Pork belly is a magnificent ingredient.

But there is no 100% elk burger I can imagine eating and enjoying.

            ?

          • And one more thing.

I’m a Mathews man. But I’m a target shooter, not a hunter. I still shoot a homemade longbow with a homemade string. The secret, of course, is to make the rest and the serving correctly. If you have focus on those details, then the limbs should be good.

Bowtech is a fine tool. But it’s too stiff for me. And their cam system feels like too much of a crutch. Maybe tech makes things better sometimes. But I think there has to be more feel in certain processes.

Diamond sucks on everything except their high end product. And that’s no way to go through life.

          • Jack- I always have pork fat mixed into my burger by the meat processor. That’s the only part I farm out,I butcher the rest myself.

Skinning an elk with a truck-

1:steal a cue ball from Manley’s on the way over the pass
2:cape the neck out so you have about 10-12″ of skin to work with
3:split the skin up the legs/skin out like you would if you were skinning in the field
4:spread out a big tarp in front of a tree
5:arrange elk on tarp on it’s belly with legs sprawled, head towards tree
6:place cue ball under neck skin and pull it up tight so it looks like the little packs of rice they give out at a wedding :D
7:tie elk’s front legs to the tree
8:wrap a cable/rope around the cue ball and hook it to the back of the truck
9:drive truck away slowly, taking skin and leaving elk

          • My Uncle tied the head to the tree instead of the front legs, not good. Ripped it clear off, dragging the half-skinned carcass through the dirt before he could stop!

Jack- You’ve never killed an elk “because it’s too easy”? I think I’m misunderstanding your comment.

          • No. Although, my brother-in-law makes it look easy sometimes. I can track elk like nobody’s business. That and being a pack mule (and carrying an extra tag) are the reasons I go along. All that stuff is easy. When it comes to shooting the animals, I just don’t get as excited as everyone else. I love the actual hunt, and I love the meat. But the kill just seems like business to me. It’s like a kill for food on a farm. It has to be done, so someone does it.

I did go duck hunting once, and that was one the most boring days I’ve ever spent doing anything. Sit in a bog and shoot things that fly over. It was more like a drinking game… without the alcohol.

          • I agree, the killing itself isn’t the thrill. The thrill is putting together all the requirements to put yourself in a position to make a humane kill possible.
            Getting your tag draw
Making the sacrifices to take 2 weeks off work
            Packing, setting up/tearing down camp
Having your rifle/bow accurately sighted in.
            Practicing shooting
            Scouting
Actual hunting in the woods, tracking, listening, testing your physical limits

The fact that you can do all those things perfectly and still not come home with meat, that’s the challenge for me. I think I read that the average Oregon hunter fills their elk tag once every 7 years.

          • And there’s no “small” pieces of rib meat…the meat between the ribs comes off with the flap. If you take no rib/neck/brisket meat, you lose out on 30 to 40 lbs of delicious elk burger. If you’ve never been taught the tricks, it can be a little daunting but worth the effort!

          • That’s it, I will do some more research before the upcoming season. Looks like I’m going to have teach myself the old fashioned way, Google and YouTube searches.
Thanks for the help greatwhite! May your tag and freezer always be full.

          • I just watched an episode of Survivorman (where he used a Leatherman!) and opened/closed it the entire time. It still needs some breaking in. I also filed my lady’s fingernails using that tool. It was a pretty good night.

    • Maybe the trouble with recruiting is that a significant portion of our fan base likes to brag about their hunting/skinning/gutting exploits.

If you watch an Oregon State basketball game on TV the fans look like the audience of a Blue Collar Comedy tour performance. Plus a bunch of ugly children.

      • Texas.

        Oklahoma.

        Alabama.

        Louisiana.

You really think the hillbillies are at Oregon State games?

Maybe you should move to San Francisco or LA so you can be with the rest of the pretty people who won’t offend your delicate sensibilities.

        • Dude, Texas is in Austin, which is even more liberal than Eugene. I’ve never been to the other locations but I know in the South everyone looks like they’re trying out for a job at Abercrombie & Fitch. I doubt you’ll see much Camo.

          • No. I personally don’t like to hunt but I don’t have a problem with the sport. Do you and WFO have a problem with folks who don’t hunt?

I do think camo hats in the stands at Oregon State games is embarrassing though.

          • So, really what you are saying – YES you have a major problem with hunters and you think that if a person hunts they are inferior (a hick). How could another fan’s fashion choices embarrass you? I hunt, and I’m proud of it and I hope to pass it on to my kids. I also am a college graduate that makes 6 figures and live in a house with indoor plumbing. You need to get some perspective.

To say that you would not see a Camo hat at a Texas game is just silly. Austin may be a liberal town but most people in the state live and die Texas sports and a high percentage of those same people that like sports like to hunt and would in no way be embarrassed to wear Camo.

          • I doubt recruits give a shit what the fans are wearing as long as the stands are full and they’re on their feet making noise. Two things that are usually lacking at Reser.

You obviously think you’re superior to us unwashed common folk in our camo and carhartt. Enjoy being fabulous in Austin or San Francisco or wherever.

          • Carhartt? Seriously? You must be one of them rich dudes who hunts because he doesn’t have a tee time until next Tuesday.

I think you meant Dickies or Wear Guard. Carhartt is a better value than the cheapo clothes (Levis, Wrangler, Lee) considering how well they wear. But them’s just some fancy marketed cloth compared to real clothes.

          • I fabricate for a living and that cheap dickies shit lasts about 2 weeks in a real shop. Double front carhartts and American made Danners FTW.

You must be one of those guys who prances around in man clothes acting like he works for a living.

          • Heh heh. I’ve only bought pants once since I bought a dozen Dickies about 15 years ago. I’ve blown through about four pairs. But they hold up well for moving 16 tons of whatever. Carhartt’s are probably better for utility (and I wear mine when it’s cold… definitely), but the cost difference at that time didn’t warrant a major purchase going with the more expensive. And I’ve never bought Ben Davis, though I hear they used to be good as well. All my pants except for the two pairs of Round House dungarees I bought two years ago are 15 years old or older. Looking at the quality sitting on the shelves now, I would say clothes pretty much suck in general. Since both Dickies and Carhartt decided to offshore production, their quality has gone WAAAAAYYYYY downhill. I can look for Carhartt with the “U” tags, but why should the consumer have to do all the work just to buy a decent pair of pants?

And it’s cool you don’t buy into the GOP talking point about “only liberal elite worker-wannabe’s buy Carhartt.”

Danner makes a good boot. I have a pair in my closet… sitting next to my 20 year-old Red Wings. But now I wear boots made by Russell Moccasin. They don’t make any safety boots, so there’s no option for you in the shop. Russell’s Thula stalker is by far the best hiking boot I’ve ever worn. Hell, it’s an awesome every day shoe if you can wear them. If you’re not into the Vibram outsole, their Mohican is also an awesome boot.

As for the shop, I still have my pair of quick release Thorogood’s I wore in the Navy. Those things are awesome. All the other boots I’ve acquired through company boot programs are just collecting dust.

          • Liberal elite worker wannabes? Who came up with that stupid shit? I’m guessing some bitch politician or radio/tv idiot who’s never worked a day in his life.

    • DVR programmed to series record already. Been watching a few of the “catch-up” episodes this week. Who could predict where it might go? Should be good! JB

Have you considered changing your name to “NCAA_viOlation, eventually, maybe if we get around to it?” Maybe an acronym of some sort. You do have the best avatar.

      • thanks, although I have to say Jack’s avatar is pretty cool. If you look at a closeup, you’ll notice it’s some sort of etched glass creation. Pretty creative. NCAAVEMIWGATO? Hmmmm…..it may be time for a change…

There are a few previews floating around on youtube that give hints about the upcoming season. WW seems to have become an egomaniac and thinks he can run the town now. I don’t really like the whole “All Hail the King” promo tagline, but it’s probably a hint as to how he views himself now.

I talked some of my family into watching the show recently, since they had never seen any episodes, unfortunately, my 70 year old mom decided to start with Season 4 Episode 1 “Box Cutter” for some reason. Needless to say, she didn’t get much of a warm up before she was thrown into the deep end. That scene still makes me cringe on repeat viewings. (kindof fitting with all the talk on here about gutting dear with Leatherman tools, haha) Not sure if she has the stomach to finish the show now.

        • Nice catch. It is an etched beaver totem on a black drop.

I saw something coming home from Portland today. I was passing a big white F150 king cab while slowing down through Salem, and the dude had one big block O right behind the driver’s seat. I can’t really remember what the lettering above and below it said… and there was lettering. But I knew instantly that it was a Beav alum showing colors.

  23. The Big 10 and Pac 12 agreement to have OOC football games is now dead. That means that we will have even more trouble getting good schools to come to Reser and be stuck with Sac St and Nichols St. in the future.
Too bad, we really could have used those games to generate interest like we are going to get from the Wisconsin game this year. This is a proven strategy as Oregon began bringing the Big 10 teams back in the 1990s. Now their fans put up with schedules like this years so that they have tickets for Tennessee next year.
We can thank USC and Stanford for dissolving this agreement as they are protecting their ND and other name team rivalries. Just another indication that the power in this conference is and will remain in California.

      • I just checked the Michigan future schedules and OSU is still on for 2015 at the Big House. So far there is no return game in Corvallis through their 2016 schedule. Utah has a home and home game with them in2014 and 2015. Looks like BDC is a very shrewd negotiator and probably holding out for something special. LOL

        • Yeah BDC scheduled that one seperately of the B10 deal. Really does wonders for the doormat image when your AD schedules you to be a warmup punching bag for a big name team.

Utah got a home and home with them though…

    • I’m fine with it. The last thing OSU recruiting needs is more national TV blowouts. At this point it would be better for OSU to schedule patsies(and then actually beat them) so they have a chance to make the post season and maybe not look like a doormat to potential recruits.

      • I respectfully disagree. We need more high profile games if we are going to attract recruits. We need teams on the schedule that all Oregonians want to see. We are in competition with Oregon for the entertainment dollar and if they get Tennessee and we get Idaho, guess who really wins. We may win the game but they get TV money and ESPN attention to boot. Kids want to see themselves on national TV, especially the really good ones.

        • The difference is that Oregon will beat Tennesse because they have a coaching staff that is capable fielding a team that wins in the month of september. OSU *might* squeak by Idaho, but will get blown out 99 times out of 100 by any big name team.

OSU has next to no chance with big name recruits with a 3-9 record. First thing to do is post up some wins and go from there. You are 100% correct that good kids want to see themselves on TV. They’re used to winning and they want to keep doing so. They WILL NOT be going to the 3 win team.

          • The Beavs are on more than one high profile recruits short list of schools that there interested in. Maybe these will pan out, maybe they wont, but it’s greater than “next to no chance”. Let’s at least try to stay in touch with reality when we comment.

          • Make a list of all the “high profile” 4*+ recruits that have OSU on their short list.

On LOI day I’ll pay you a dollar for every one that actually signs, you pay me a dollar for every one that doesn’t.

            Deal?

          • You either think I’m a fool or you don’t understand probability. If a 4 star recruit has a list of four schools with OSU as one of those, with all things being equal, that would give Oregon State a 25% chance. While in reality, as hard as it may be to admit, the Beavs wouldn’t be at a 25% likelihood. But, I’ll give them more than a “next to no chance”.

So here’s the bet. If Hunt verbals to OSU, you buy me a beer and wear a “I heart Puddles” shirt for a week. Deal?

        • Remember that we are talking about 3 years out. If we are still that bad then we will already be labeled as roadkill and we need the money.

          • Mechicken is going to kill us even if we improve. Hoke has put together a great staff and is knocking it out of the park recruiting wise.

If the Rodent Bowl gets cancelled somebody is going to get hurt.

          • I’m going to have to agree with Kenny 100%. If you can’t beat the best, then why are you complaining about not being the best? There is one major component to other sports which football seems to never take into account because it relies so heavily on a really faulty system. There are people who attend these games… let’s call them fans. These “fans” want to see excellence. They’re not there for crap. Beating up on grand’ma and her two second cousins is boring as hell… except in the SEC. Give us some real sport, and we’ll be there win or lose.

Of course, there has to be some return action. Our hoops team goes to KC this year, and I hear KU comes to the Rose Garden next year.

That’s big time! And we’ll beat them on one of two if not both. THAT’S how exciting scheduling can be.

    • While not the number one reason to pass up play for pay and return to OS(U), I gotta believe these guys expect to be in Omaha next year! Me too!

  24. Just read on Oregon Live that Eastern Washington will play at OSU in 2013 ant at Oregon in 2015. This is what we get without the Big 10 scheduling agreement. Paying top dollar for season tickets to see FCS teams! If we are going to stoop this low then we should play Port. State and keep the money in state. Ugh.

    • Every team except USC and ND play an FCS team at home every single season. Playing one FCS team is not a big deal, you’re overreacting.

    • Be real, do you HONESTLY think even with a agreement with another power conference that would send some Big 10 teams to Corvallis, that FCS teams wouldn’t be coming to Corvallis anymore? If you really think that then you’re in denial. FCS teams will come to Corvallis every year for the most part, just how it is in today’s college football.

        • It did work, it was a one touchdown game in the fourth, the previous two trips they were down 20-25 points in the fourth. It’s the Beavers’ secret weapon so they don’t get killed on national tv on the road. They should do it more often.

  25. Edward Williams, the linebacker from new orleans to A & M. Also, D’vante Henry, the linebacker we stashed at Arizona western also received an offer from A & M.

  26. Cal had a really good record of not playing FCS teams. Right up until last year where they brought in Presbyterian to play in AT&T park.

      • Ahhh. Ok you’re right. I thought they were one of the final holdouts though. Maybe that was the case 6 years ago? Anyways, here is the PAC FCS games Since 07:

        Pac-12: 9 in 2012, 8 in 2011, 7 in 2010, 4 in 2009, 2 in 2008 and 2 in 2007, for a total of 32.

  27. How long did the NCAA investigate CT? I’m curious because it will clue me in on when they might announce something re UO.

Also, with the recent report from Ped State, I thought UO would take advantage of the media cover and admit something.

  28. I think for about $13,000 OSU should be able to buy two 80″ and two 70″ flatscreens for Truax as part of the Gameday Improvements. These would make a nice impression on recruits and attract more people to become part of a higher quality OSU fandom culture. Beats an inflatable helmet.

  29. There was a rumor at Sunriver last weekend that Chip Kelly left 2 or 3 schollies open and if there is a scholarship reduction in the NCAA penalties that he can make it retro-acitve to last recruiting season. Anyone know if this is true?

    • pretty clever. that would imply that he knows they’re only going to take away a few scholarships though. man would that blow…

  30. I wonder how much Uncle Phil can affect the outcome of the investigation. I doubt if the sanctions against Oregon will be severe. No matter Chip will put together a wining team again this year against our dead beat coach. I think USC will dominate the Ducks but will be one heck of a game again on Nov 3rd.

    • Phil Knight is way to smart to get involved with the NCAA. His whole company makes tons of money off of most of the college teams. I agree, Chip Kelly will find a way to out-strategize MR again.

    • To me the violations were blatant, and the school knew, and then tried to cover up (asking Lyles for hard copy to show the NCAA). So I dont see how this gets off with a slap on the wrist. And Kelley himself might not be there after it actually hits the fan. Hard to see how a coach survives after being directly involved.

The smart schools would have someone acting for the coach so he can claim ignorance.

I think they get hit reasonably hard, and wouldnt be a bit surprised to see Kelley gone. That said, I also think they have reached that next level, like USC has been at, and will not regress in any huge way. And if Kelley goes, they will get a GOOD replacement.

OSU needs to step it up, obviously, but if real sanctions hit UO, go after it especially hard as that is a chance to regain competitive status against them. We should not let an opportunity like that slip away.
