It Must be Boring to be A Duck Fan

Except for the post season.

Imagine being a fan and watching a blowout vs a cupcake every week? It's probably cool for a while, but then you crave a real football game. Best analogy I can think of is playing Madden as a kid. The rookie level was fun for a few hours, but then I wanted to play a real game. Come on, Oregon–schedule some real opponents; bump your Madden level to sophomore.

Normally don't cover the Ducks here, but that game last night was brutal to watch, and I just had to say it.

  1. Come on angry you are mixing up the games. Madden doesn’t have freshman and sophomore playing levels, that’s NCAA. Madden has rookie, pro, all-pro, and all-madden.

  2. Agree about their weak non-conference games, but there’s nothing they can do about PAC12 opponents turning out to be cupcakes.

K-State did puss out on em too. That doesn’t let them off the hook entirely but at least they tried.

  3. the whole topic has gotten stale. i shutter to think what the next edgy publicity stunt they think of will be. i suppose they’re pretty damn good though.

  4. Totally agree, every week I tune in to see if the ducks will lose and then the blowout ensues. I’ve never made it past the half. It might be different if you are a fan, watching your team blow out the opponent. I’m looking forward to Utah.

  5. This happens to many beautiful women who marry billionaires. At first, they don’t notice how ugly and controlling the guy is while they are buying multiple huge houses named after him, stylish wardrobes for every season (including six hats) and traveling on private jets. A woman whose roots are a small city and liberal arts education sense emptiness after a while. She sees what they have but doesn’t really feel like it is theirs; it is his. All the glamor, recognition, accomplishments don’t have anything to do with her. It is all the game of a wealthy, ugly man. She finds herself attracted to musicians and poets and land grant college football fans. These are people who don’t have much but every bit is theirs. She ultimately leaves the ugly little billionaire for the authenticity of the struggle, the lows, the highs, the cheap beer but the love.

  6. Maybe it’s just jealously, but you’re right it is boring. At least Belloti’s teams could be counted on to lay an egg on the road now and then. What stuns me is their depth, they’ve lost some key players to injuries and they haven’t missed a beat. I’m holding on to the hope that they really haven’t played anybody and Wazzu played them tough for a half. I will have to move back to Utah if they win their precious “natty”. Goddamn Ducks, forcing me into a situation where I have to root for Nick Saban!

  7. We should talk about the hard Ducking no
    The hardDucking?
Yeah, cause I think it’s a pretty common complaint.
Yeah, the ladies don’t really like the hard ducking.
You feel like you’re giving them some extra BeaverJuice
    They’re not into that, no.
You’re like, oh, take em to the limit
Maybe they are though, they’re into that,
You know what the test is?
You just say get on top honey,
    You do what you like
And then sometimes she’ll be ducking you really hard
It’s like wait, wait you like that? You like that?
Slow down I’m gonna spurt! Ahh uhhh sorry,
You shouldn’t have ducked me so hard.

  8. Funny that you would bring this up. Just the other day I had a conversation with an employee who is a hardcore duck fan:
“so I only watched the first 15 minutes of the game..did you watch it?”
“oh yeah definitely..it was a total blow out, we killed them sooo badd……it gets kinda boring after a while you know…..you should have seen it on twitter..all these duck fans talking about how bored they are.”
….so then i had to mock him a little for that. i mean come on.

  9. Ok, we sure as hell dont want Duck fans to be BORED … so the NCAA comes down on them by having them play blindfolded.. No bowl ban, no scholarship reduction, just blindfolds ….

That will even things up. And…provide some entertainment to all other fans., while Duck fans learn humility….

  10. I would not complain if our Beavers put a game away at halftime, at least not complain too much. You younger fans can take watching heart pounding games, but my DR. says I should go take a walk instead.

  11. While I think this thread topic is kind of strange, and a little surprising, the more meaningful question to me is “Is it boring to be Chip Kelly?” I think is the end of the Chip Kelly era is near. If he gets a NC this year, and there are NCAA penalties of some form coming down, what has he left to prove at this level? He’s 41-6 as a HC to date. I heard the other day he set a FBS record for consecutive games with 30+ points scored (or something like that). Who has he lost to – BSU, Stanford, Ohio State, Auburn, LSU, and USC? He has a Holiday and Rose bowl victory, and a Rose Bowl and NCS loss.

How much longer can Kelly find this satisfying and not want to move on to something else? Like Angry said, the postseason is fun – can he wait that long annually? Will the additional facilities (7-story “football headquarters”) and challenge of building and maintaining a national powerhouse program be enough for him to stay?

I could see him leaving within 2 years, the O coordinator taking over, and UO becoming less than they are now, but still very good.

    • Oh, and if he wanted to this year, the margins of victory could be much, much greater. I read that Barry Switzer while at Oklahoma used to talk about “hanging half-a-hundred on ’em.” Kelly can do that in a half.

  12. Lets see which situation I would prefer.

Going into each game with a high degree of confidence versus hoping for the best.

Not having to endure a miserable losing season.

Anticipating which BCS Bowl they will make.

Going to a beautiful sold out stadium versus hoping someone buys the last 1000 tickets.

On a road game watching from the comfort of your family room as the opposing stadium empties at halftime.

Having a five star recruit anywhere in the country return your phone calls.

Having the coach of the #1 team in the country start to play mind games in October.

Having the best mascot and cheerleaders in the country.

Tell me any true Beaver wouldn’t love to be in their place!

The Ducks have achieved (except for three points to Auburn) what the rest of us are striving for. Their time in the sun can be fleeting, so they should enjoy it while it lasts. JB

    • Beautiful stadium? I would disagree. Granted, Reser looks like somebody ran out of money on the project, but that doesn’t make Autzen beautiful.

Cheerleaders best in the country maybe. Like the Ducks, top 5 easily.

      Mascot no.

The rest of its pretty accurate.

    • I agree, Benny has much more class than the duck mascot. Remember the “alien” egg Oregon hatched some years ago and the reptile scared all the duck fan children. What a joke. I’d rather kiss a beaver than a duck!

  13. Seems there is quite a distinction between being a fan of the game and a fan of the experience. Many of the Uck fans I see fall into the later category.

They don’t actually crave a real football game; they will continue to wear their colors and cheer so long as it is the “in” thing. No doubt some of the actual FB fans in their camp stay there trying to impress the groupies.

    • “wear their colors”……what is their colors anyway. I see more OSU “black” and yellow than I do puke green on fans. Confront them with that and see what they say……..it’s like USC fans wearing light blue.

    • Speaking of class, or classism to foreshadow my forthcoming comment, but for a rich program, they sure have attracted a lot of white trash fans. I agree their fans like being part of the larger experience, even though they are often people who didn’t attend UO. Some of the most obnoxious UO fans I know never attended school there. The whole Nike tie and marketing approach seems to have made many Duck fans conflate the shoe company and the football team. Oh wait….

    • The irony of duck success is that it may actually crowd out the true fan. I know a “true” fan and he loves the ducks even though he never attended uofo and has had season tickets for a long time. He told me the other day that he will probably give up his tickets next year as the ticket increases over the last year have made it extremely expensive for his family.

It’s much better to be a Beaver fan, one who suffers really knows how to enjoy the ride we’re on.

  14. Did they put the idiotic “controversy” behind them and decide on the all- black theme for this game? Going with daughter and son and just wondering. One other question- does it really matter? Go Beavs.

  15. OT–LSU v aTm. aTm up 12-0 and LSU scores with 1:49 left in the half, 12-7. aTm eschews Riley wisdom and comes out throwing from their 20. After a first down the aTm RB fumbles and with :21 left LSU scores a TD to take a 14-12 halftime lead. When you see things like that happen you start to think maybe Mike is right to be a little conservative at times.

    • I agree to a certain extent because I think it depends on the opponent. Against LSU that is definitely a stupid decision. Against Wazzu, not so much. You gotta pick your battles. Trying to drive 80 yards in less than two minutes with the lead against that LSU defense? Our friend Chip might not even try that.

      • It also depends on field position. At the 20, take a knee, but Riley has taken a knee at his own 40. Depends on the opponent and game momentum , but that is usually a bad decision.

    • that is weird. i’m not sure what that means, i would guess it’s mainly due to marable/ward never getting past the 25 on kick returns.

  16. First off, duck fan here. The mere fact that I even exist is incomprehensible & disgusting to you. Something wrong with that? Hell no! And should it curdle my gut when I have to see some osu flag flapping around somewhere? Hell yes! It’s a rivalry, or have too many people forgotten that?

If a team has the talent level & depth that Oregon apparently does have, it makes all the sense in the world to see their 2H scheme. You get out to a big lead by halftime. In order for your opponent to try & just stay in it, then all they’ve got in the playbook has to be out on the table. 2H, the 2nd string comes in, get a ton of playing time, AND maintain the lead that’s been put up. Starters rest & the injury factor is reduced.

Boring? Not to me. And, you know, that’s ok if you think #22 UA, #23 Wash. & ASU are cupcakes.
Hard to pick out 1 team from another once they’ve been tossed so deep into the pit of defeat.

  17. Love this attitude so much, had to post it again here:

A peek into the mind of a true 5 star winner, as tweeted by Brandon Sprague:

“OSU mentality game by game: “Just another chance to go 1-0 against the best team in the nation cause its the only team we play” – I. Seumalo.”

That approach will take this kid (and this team) a long way, both on and off the field!

  18. As a conventional (pro, smash mouth) style football fan, I find it not very enjoyable to watch the style of offense that U of O runs. Boring even. It’s a sophisticated form of “keep-away” ,with fast people, more than it is football to me.

I suspect they’ll win the Civil War again this year with that style, maybe even the Nat’l Championship. Their style leaves me really disinterested in college football after about 5 weeks into the season.
