Utah @ Oregon State (Game Thread)

Been reading some SLC rags that think Utah has a legit shot at the upset. Apparently they are psyched for this game and hungry for a win. Then I saw this article on Riley worried about a let down.

ND losing, South Carolina losing, Beavs could jump to at least 6 with a win if these scores holdup. A lot on the line and a hungry Utah team has me nervous. Still taking the Beavs (because of the huge WR advantage over their secondary) but anxious.

Go Beavs

  1. That CBF Matrix guy on radio other day was amazed beavs were favored by 10, talking up Utah’s talent level. I can’t not be nervous for beaver football, so what’s new!

Stanford’s D making Cal look silly today.

    • From what I’ve read (and little I’ve seen) Utah has a bad secondary but decent front four. I’m sure McKalk knows more.

After ND, I think Utah is my least favorite team. Not even sure why (though the refs jobbing the Beavs in ’08 is a good start).

      • I almost five years removed from SLC now, so I’m not following them as closely anymore. Brian Blechen was supposed to develop into an “all world” type player, but he got in some trouble and missed some games this year, so I don’t think the back line is as strong as they usually are. Reggie Dunn hasn’t really become the threat I thought he was going to be. I Jordan Wynn’s injury was kind of the “straw” for this team, but Whittingham has pride, so it is no gimme.

  2. Joe Avezzano is once again, as always, worried about a trap game.

If there is any team that needs vast distance from overconfidence it’s the Beavs.

    “Trust but verify”….something like that.

  3. Im feeling quite the opposite and honestly this kind of talk disturbs me. I worry that it becomes a self-fullfilling prophecy when you start talking about trap games. I know its an Uck thing, but we could use a little “win the day” mentality right now.

We match up well against Utah. Unless they do something completely out of charactor, we should have little trouble shutting down their run game making them pretty one dimensional. I suspect just like we’ve shown all year, we will get beat several times in the secondary but make up for it with key turnovers.

Im usually pretty pessimistic, but I really have a feeling this is the blowout game we thought we would have against WSU. 41-19 Orange

    • I agree…just nervous hearing how hungry Utah is for a win, and then Riley worried about a let down. Took some wind out of my sail. Watching ND come out flat at home reminded me how much psychology plays into these games, too.

My biggest concern is Vaz having time in the pocket. Think he might have a little less this week/we might see more sacks. If he can get the ball to the WRs they have a huge advantage. That’s how I see it.

      • All underdogs are hungry until you put 21 on them. Look at how fast ASU gave up vs. the Ducks. That first drive I thought “oh man, this’ll be a game!” 21 points later, I was sleeping.

    • “we should have little trouble, we thought we would have against WSU” – I fear that what WE should have little trouble with and what WE thought or think is completely disconnected from the players and the game as it will actually happen.

  4. BYU really let that game get away…. would have been great for our SOS. Now just have to hope they beat oklahoma and lose to USC.

    • Even Notre dame homers gotta admit that they don’t win that game in Provo. I take that back. Notre Dame homers have a mental disorder.

  5. I felt I was being generous to Utah picking the Beavs 31-20. I really feel this should be more of a 31-17 game for OSU. My scenario allows for a late TD by Utah that takes them from 13 to 20 points for the day. OSU should really be able to pressure the freshman QB Wilson. As long as the crowd brings the energy I think Oregon State plays up to the national ESPN2 audience and puts on a showing deserving of a #8 team. We should be atleast #7 in the AP and BCS come tomorrow. Too much on the line to equal the all time best start in OSU history and help Reser Phase 3 efforts to not put forth a good game on both sides of the ball. :)

    • I’m not keen about the late start. Don’t quite understand it for homecoming weekend, especially. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a homecoming game at any school that wasn’t played in the afternoon so the alums could party/dance whatever after the game.

      • Yeah, hate this late kickoff. It’s feeling more like bed time, not football time. Especially with the early sunsets this time of year.

  6. Poyer was just mentioned as a top 5 for Heisman on the fox broadcast of K-Sate and W Va ..who knows, a couple more pick 6’s and he could make a case?

      • “Charles Woodson of the University of Michigan is the only primarily defensive player to win the award, beating out Heisman favorite Peyton Manning quarterback from the University of Tennessee in 1997. He was a standout cornerback, but also occasionally played as a wide receiver and punt returner.”

        • Yeah, I couldn’t think of any offhand. That’s a real shame. Offense is overrated…much easier to play offense in college (or any level, really). Elite defenders should get mad props.

Collin Klein should be in the mix. Not sure if they mentioned him, but he’d be in my top 3.

    • Tyner recommitted to the Ducks. The Dicks have a “you can’t take any visits if you’re committed” rule. That’s why he decommitted in the first place. That being said, it could be an “unofficial” if he is.

  7. Trap game? I cant see it. We are not blowing anyone away…..no one should be over confident. And if we cant take care of a team like Utah, forget going into the CW undefeated.

But given our newness to winning, I think we make some mistakes and this is another close game.

    GO BEAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. I’d be very pleased if this was a blow out and even more so if that meant Harrington got some meaningful minutes.

Imo OSU is on thin ice right now as far as the QB situation goes and Riley needs to get his 3rd string guy ready just in case.

I find it hard to believe that Vaz had to wait until he was a junior before taking a snap. That would only make sense if he was 4th or 5th string QB.

I think Riley was more than a bit lucky that Vaz was able to perform as well as he did WITH NO COLLEGE GAME EXPERIENCE.

Major kudos to Vaz, but not Riley.

    • Usually the second string QB sees playing time only when we are blowing out another team. We haven’t done that since the 1800’s I believe so maybe that is why you haven’t seen Vaz yet.

  9. too many guys on this team were here last year, no let down after last year’s performance. Beavs stumble a bit in the red zone but win 27-10. (Lettuce 2-2 FG, 3-3 PAT, I know, that is the improbable part)

  10. Was watching the WVU K-State game and they put up a graphic of Heisman Hopefuls with four faces, Collin Klein, Geno Smith, Manti Teo and the fourth? Jordan Poyer.

    • He’ll have to take a punt or two to the house and get a handful more ints to win it.
Funny how Riley waited forever to give him a scholarship and only did it begrudgingly after missing on some CA kids.

      • I think the focus on offense is such that it will take much more than what you list for Poyer to get the Heisman.
Key, game winning plays including at least one pick six and continued success for the team plus your list. At the minimum.

  11. I don’t believe there was any team wanting a win more against the Beavs than BYU. If we can overcome that pressure (which we did in good fashion), then I do not see any worries with Utah. I worry more about offensive play calling (as usual) than our players executing.

I do believe in the theory that the team that wants to win most has an advantage. With this in mind our Beaver teams wants to win also…….more so than the Utes.

  12. Wasn’t someone arguing with me in last week’s thread when I said KSU was going to kill WVU? I think it was GoBeavs but maybe someone else. Anyway, yeah. K-State is good. Snyder is up there with Chip Kelly as the best coach in football.

  13. I don’t know why any coach would make a negative type statement to the press concerning an up coming game. To me it would give negative vibs to the players. I think Riley should have been more positive in his statements……..giving positive support to his team players and coaching staff. IMO

    • Is there anything you agree with Riley on? If you were in charge he would have been fired about 300 times by now. Whatever he’s doing this season is obviously working so until we lose, i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

    • If you read all of his comment he said he WAS worried too until he saw how level headed and all about business they were in practice. So I think the reporter pulled it out of context and Riley is not worried.

  14. I like the night games over the 12-3 pm games for a few reasons:

    1. Having a game late weeds out a lot of the old people that refuse to stand and would prefer to nap in their seats during the game and replaces them with people who enjoy the night tailgating atmosphere and get extremely excited and rowdy, thus making Reser a much tougher place to play.
    2. Late games also force the players to wait all day before they can play which I believe gets them all the more wound up and itching to get out there and hit someone.

While I would prefer 5 or 6 p.m. to 730, which I agree is a bit late, i’ll personally take it over noon any day.

  15. Like last week, I won’t be around during the game. Behave. ;)
Going over to the gym room to workout…gotta get in shape for my upcoming surgery. After the game I’ll probably writeup post game comments if there’s anything worth mentioning. If not, probably won’t be a new post until Monday (Lady Beav is forcing me to pick apples again tomorrow).
    Later. Go Beavs.

  16. I know it was complete, but that was a terrible throw. Just worse coverage.

Loving the run D so far. Make the Frosh QB beat you.

The offense looked nervous or something, but as long as the D plays tough, we’ll win this. The talent disparity is just too large.

    • They don’t seem very good to me; White has had basically nowhere to run.

Vaz with a bad start, but all of these pocket passes are dumb; he’s six feet tall, GET HIM OUT OF THE POCKET!

    • lol so true. Riley is like “Oh yeah, 3 runs; that’s 12 for the game! Now stay in the pocket and throw over dudes that are 6’4″, Cody!”

  17. That fake-option pitch inside to the FB that BYU killed us with last week? Owned it there; my guess is just because they lack the talent on offense, but still good to see.

  18. Anybody know how many more minutes of commercials are in a typical game these days compared to 10-15 years ago. I felt like it completely ruined the momentum of the game when I was at the Wazuu game.

  19. Feti makes a nothing play and talks shit, then completely blows the assignment on the same dude and gives up a touchdown.

I hate our backup linebackers so much. Can we trade them and Martin for some chips or something?

  20. Other than that second series where Storm got smothered in the backfield twice, our running game has looked pretty solid. Gotta keep them honest at least.

  21. BTW, that was definitely 4-down territory. I understand not wanting to fail(again) and giving them the ball at midfield when their offense is struggling, but still….ITS ONE YARD!

  22. Maybe tonight’s game will help remind us what to expect from these lower tiered teams. Mannion will be prepped for UW next week. Hopefully with a 6-0 record.

      • Basically it is because Riley plays the odds and only cares about winning by any amount. So he would rather not make a mistake in some games at home. On the road he knows he needs a few more defining plays to grab the lead and hold it. Open it up in the 2nd half and getb the ball to Wheaton and Cooks. Quick side-outb throws thrown in with some 15 yard crossing routes, etc. You have to strecth the field more than we are right now. Last game we threw more in the 1st half. I am glad Storm has two TDs but time to get everyone involved and let our receivers make some plays.

  23. I am going to beat this dead horse into China until I see a fly sweep or more screens to Wheaton and Cooks.

Thankfully the defense gifted our offense those two TD’s.

  24. Based on what the announcers were saying pregame it sounds like the coaches were too busy reliving the moment they found out we were ranked #8 to actually prepare a gameplan.

I am all pissed off now, but if some nice halftime adjustments are made I will happily eat a Reser sized bucket of crow.

  25. Our play calling gets the gold star for cowardice that half, and linebackers get the silver medal for flailing, and Riley gets the bronze for hexing his own team.

    • Particularly our last possession of the half. Should have gone for it there. I believe we would’ve scored to close out the half. It’s what we did right earlier this year. Go for it on fourth in that situation.

  26. All the momentum is on their side. Wow, we are just fucking sleepy and out-of-it.

We should play our safeties deeper; after all, that Frosh QB is going to torch us deep, and their running game sucks!

    It’s opposite day, right?

  27. Murphy bumped the receiver. Idiot. AND he was offside? As a safety? COME ON!!!

Whole team is just completely out of it.

If we’re tied or even down, going into the fourth, YOU PUT MANNION IN! That isn’t even debatable.

  28. Get an In-n-Out in Corvallis or never schedule a home game again. This team doesn’t play unless they have a big juicy double double

Holy crap Utah wants to fumble away this game to us. Their guy saw Crichton and shit himself.

  29. Well we did try to throw deep, at least there’s that. Nice run by Vaz there too, but we need a nice long drive here. They have all the momentum, and are outplaying us pretty bad right now.

  30. You know if there is an Angry Utes site they are screaming at Whittingham for getting too fancy and not just bustin’ it up the middle.

  31. Play calling is still stupid as hell. Eventually we’re going to stop winning in spite of ourselves. Defense needs to realize they got lucky and punish some people like Murphy just did there

  32. For whatever reason, the deep throw has not been there. But we don’t seem to be very creative in our playcalling tonight. Looks like a CLASSIC Langsdouche game; boring runs and boring passes, completely predictable.

  33. Man, White cannot catch the ball, at all.

And that gunner was right in Poyer’s face on the fair catch, where’s the damn call? This fucking ref needs a new set of glasses, these ones aren’t doing the job.

  34. D to O: “How many opportunities do we have to give you?!?”

O needs to put up 21 more for this final to look respectable.

ND didn’t look like #5 today.

    Start “Cookin”

  35. Wheaton having a BIG series, and the offense is finally moving a little. I don’t feel inspired by it or anything, but at least the ball is moving.

  36. Utah’s defensive line is pretty good; they’ve been collapsing the pocket and plugging up the run pretty well most of the game.

  37. Couldn’t Riley at least pretend to care or notice when the refs fuck up? Get in someone’s face about that LIVE ball. Or when a gunner threatens defenseless players.

  38. Poyer is going to like having a coach next year that stands up for him. Will be a nice change of pace.

HOW CAN HE CALL A DELAY OF GAME AND THEN SAY THEY GOT A TIMEOUT FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FUCK THIS FUCKING TURTLE REF!

  39. This game is fucking bullshit. Refs against us. Again. Riley and co are cowering. Back to obscurity we go if we don’t grow a backbone

    • Chrichton is our best player, by far. Would be fun to put together a list though, every player from 1 to 55.

It would probably start something like this:

      1. Chrichton
      2. Poyer
      3. Wheaton
      4. Anderson
      5. Wynn
      6. Mannion
      7. Cooks

      etc.

  40. Huge call for us on that helmet-to-helmet. Then Cummings tried to negate it with after-the-play shit talk.

Even if the drive is ugly, we need 7 here to make this a 14 point win.

  41. Huge drive. Took good time, and other than one STUPID penalty, we moved the ball on almost every play. Been waiting for the offense to look like that all night, but better late than never.

Also, as a side-note, Utah’s head coach has the funniest facial expressions I’ve seen from a coach; can we just get a camera following him all night?

  42. 15 carries 39 yards for Storm. I don’t think he’s been nearly as explosive since he “Sprained” his knee, and while their DLine has been good, 2.6 YPC isn’t good enough.

Then again, who else do we have? Agnew is good in spurts, Ward is good in spurts, Woods is at least consistently solid, generally. Although tonight, he’s been blah.

  43. That was a gigantic horseshit call. Win swatted at the ball and hit the QB’s face, and that’s a penalty? Jesus. Can’t even look at the QB without it being a penalty.

  44. Zimmerman blows the coverage, but Utah drops the pass.

Have NOT been impressed with Zimmerman since about week 1. Just been horrible in coverage.

  45. Grades for the game:

QB C+: Mad eplays when he had to, and got better in the second half, but the offense was ugly for quite a while and a big part of that falls on Vaz.
RB B-: Utah’s front 4 was very stout, so Storm’s numbers look pretty bad, but on the goal line, he got the job done every time.
WRs B+: Really no drops, other than a few horrible throws, but they didn’t have a lot of opportunities, either. Wheaton had a great game but couldn’t quite get to the endzone.
OLine B-: There weren’t many gaps to run through after the first quarter, and the pocket collapsed a few too many times. But they held their ground in-the-end against a good DLine.
DLine B: A few big penalties extended a drive, but the line was our best unit as usual. They stuffed the run pretty well, and created/recovered a pair of fumbles.
Linebackers C-: Doctor and Alexander made about 2 plays each, and while they were pretty good plays, that was literally it. Feti also gave up our only touchdown via blow pass coverage.
Secondary B+: Reynolds and Poyer held the fort down, as always. Martin blew a few coverages, then came up with the dagger INT. Watkins and Murphy made plays as usual, and Zimmerman blew at least two coverages. Overall pretty good, but Zimmerman and Martin as our “Future” scares the crap out of me.
Special Teams A-: We gave up one nice kick return(About 40 yards), but didn’t need Lettuce to kick any FGs, and Kostol was a monster as usual, pinning Utah on almost every punt.

Overall, it was an ugly game, but come on; you have to be excited that we can play an absolutely miserable game, and still win by 14. We would have definitely lost these types of games in the past, but we won solidly instead. That being said, welcome back Peyton Mannion; we missed you(this week).

  46. No kidding about the two different Beav teams home and away.

    Home=Shit offense and stellar def.
    Away=Offensive fireworks and mediocre def.

Why can’t we have fireworks at home? If the trend continues there is no chance against the Ducks or any good team at home.

  47. Chrichton is MVP -1 stupid penalty. Defense won this game (once again this season). Offense look pretty poor tonight. Utah controlled the momentum and the ball. Once again, defense won the game.

I think Vaz had hangover from the last game. I think Cooks and Wheaten should have been more involved first half. Cooks is scary good and they needed to get the ball to him more.

Happy they won, wish it was prettier!

    • No reason for fat heads after this performance, should be no chance of overconfidence next week. Still in search of a complete game. Wow, d averaging less than 7 points given up per game…..at home.

Once again, lots of material for coaches to use in teaching next week; I continue to think this team is teachable and has its best games ahead of it. GO BEAVS!

  48. Well, players were graded, why not riley’s play calling………

D fucking + at best………..maybe Riley’s saving the good plays for Civil War……go figure.

  49. ” I must ask the question of our special teams coach about two kick offs after we scored both times. On both occasions Utah was hit with 15 yard personal foul penalty. We then kicked off from our 45, not the 30 yard line. Instead of kicking shallow to the goal line and forcing the returner to run back probably to the 15-20 yard line at best. Our kicker booms it out of the end zone giving them possession on their 25 yard line. The same thing happen on one kick off for Utah and their kicker hit a shallow to our goal line and we were downed on the return on maybe our 15. Did our kicker fail to follow instructions, or was he coached to do what he did? Seems like a poor coaching decision for me.”
