I know football brings in the most revenue, but something to think about: Pat Casey makes 230k per year, and Mike Riley makes 1.7 mil per year.
OSU should hire Casey as a "consultant" to explain preparation (both mental and physical) to Riley–it would be a good excuse to give the man money he deserves while improving Riley's glaring weakness.
230k still seems kind of low for Casey. How does that compare to other baseball coaches?

Why are you excluding CR from this “mentorship” program or are you assuming he’ll be gone soon enough anyway? Hell, I’d give Casey 500k to coach the hoops team part-time and it would be worth it not to hear “excuse machine” at the post-game press conferences.
Well, nice idea, but I dont think you can make a motivator out of a doormat. Riley seemed last year to be trying to be more dynamic and emotional, but it isnt his nature. If you phoney it up, the kids are gonna know.
Riley did a pretty good job of motivating or whatever it was, in the first half of last years season, but couldnt keep it going. Reverted to his true nature? Got tired? Who knows…..
But hey, kick Casey a hundred k to try to teach em…..cant hurt….
I think a big part of the motivation last year was losing Fred Thompson in the off-season. The team rallied around that pain, and it kept them focused and motivated throughout the fall. Hopefully this off-season doesn’t see them revert to their old ways, but I’m afraid that could very easily be the case.
Anyone know about the status of the JC DT Peko? It seemed like he was the biggest get of the JC DT names we got and he hasn’t been mentioned at all on a couple of the early depth chart break downs I’ve seen. Are grades still an issue?
From what I have read/heard, he wasn’t going to make it up for spring ball, so that is why he isn’t listed on the spring depth charts. Had to take care of business to make it for fall camp. I don’t know his status or if there is anything the team needs to worry about.

Haven’t seen much on Peko, but I follow Edwin Delva on Twitter. That guy needs to stop putting his private life out there for all to see. Sounds like he’s been in Miami for awhile (thought his Juco was in California?) Talks about needing various medications to get to sleep at night including self medicating on NyQuil. Posts pics of all the money he plans to spend at the strip club that evening. Just seems like he’s destined to find himself in trouble one of those boring evenings in Corvallis when he doesn’t have something to keep him busy.(which will probably be most nights.)

I think it is ridiculous to think that a baseball coach can add value above and beyond a football coach when it comes to preparing football players physically. It certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing to use Pat Casey sparingly in terms of giving a pep talk about winning at the highest level of competition, but he wouldn’t add much value to the football program as a ‘consultant’.
Your stance that Mike Riley’s glaring weakness is his preparation is also ridiculous and I think every sportswriter in the college football world would disagree with you. He wins consistently and he wins with what many consider to be inferior talent. I would wager that a majority of those sports writers that are familiar with the PAC 12 would put Mike Riley in the top bucket of coaches for preparation. You seem to create a lot of factoids.
While I like Pat Casey and I am glad he is our coach, I think his reputation is overstated. He wasn’t even considered that good of a coach until Jacoby Ellsbury came along. He has won about 62% of his games at Oregon State compared to Mike Riley winning about 55% of his games.
To put it another way, from 1999 through 2004, Pat Casey’s teams never finished better than 6th. That is six seasons in a row where Pat Casey could not break the top half of the PAC 10. 9 times in his 18 seasons (50%), Oregon State baseball was in the bottom half of the conference. If Mike RIley put up those numbers in Football, your head would explode if he wasn’t fired. Mike Riley has finished in the bottom half of the conference 4 times in 12 seasons (33%), and two of those were his first two seasons coaching and Oregon State hadn’t had a winning season in 28 years or whatever it was.
If you want to attribute Mike Riley’s success to the Rodger’s brothers and a few other key players he has had, you have to do the same with Pat Casey and Ellsbury, Barney, Canham and a few key arms.
It’s ridiculous? Ask Sac State’s coach about Riley’s preparation. Every sportswriter might disagree, but every financial writer disagreed there was a housing bubble, too.
Also, Riley has flopped in every prime time game or big game (other than the USC games if you count those as big games).
As you admit, it is not true that Oregon State has flopped in every big game – we beat USC multiple times. The problem is that you only think the game is “big time” when Oregon State is a significant underdog. It’s only big time to you when we play teams that are ranked a lot higher than we are.
Mike Riley beats teams that are ranked higher than his own team quite often.

Not just lost big games, fucking faceplanted on national TV. Including last season’s bowl game.
As long as we’re counting, that road win over #2 Cal a few years ago should be considered a big win (if we’re counting the USC home games.)
The list is large. Penn State, Boise State, TCU, Texas, Civil War Rose Bowl x 2, Wisconsin (in Madison). Then there are borderline big games like Cincinnati x 2, Louisville, etc.
Maybe people are defining big games differently than I am. I don’t consider an Emerald Bowl vs Maryland a big game. Maybe some do.
Riley did beat Wisconsin last year in a big game, so add that to the USC wins. #2 Cal…eh, that was a nice upset but it wasn’t a marquee game or big ooc game.
I’m just saying a home win over a #1 or #3 USC should be worth a road win over #2 CAL. Cal would have been #1 if they had won that game. the goal line stand in the 3rd quarter(which i think lasted something like 7 plays because of a freebie penalty) was one of the better defensive stands I’ve seen from a Riley team ever.
If Cincinatti and Louiville are big games, so is Cal.

Riley finished in the bottom half of the conference twice in the past three seasons. The last half of last season had a losing record.
Riley had a losing season with Quizz. Job motivation seems to be the key, not personnel. How can a properly coached and motivated D-1 team lose to a Sac State?
Casey has won it all, and twice……Riley has never even got in a BCS game.
That said, Riley seems to be re-motivated and did very well overall last season. Looks very positive for the coming season. ….and no Kelley in Eugene now…lol.

While Angry and others have looked at Riley’s performance and concluded that preparation (and recruiting) are weaknesses I am of the opinion that his personality is of equal concern. While his calm or “matter of fact” approach sells well with other coaches and with parents, I’m not so sure it brings out the best in student-athletes…..Hip, Hip,Hooray! While his loyalty to subordinates goes over well with them, I’m not convinced it leads to the best coaching staff possible.
Rather than counting on the team to motivate itself Riley needs to wear his heart on his sleeve a bit more and stick up for players who receive cheap shots. Side Note: How about Chief of Staff Locey being in the pressbox with a direct line to Riley to point out egregious behavior and signal a tirade if Riley himself misses the offense?
Bray, Lyle M., and the newer position coaches can/will do a lot to make up for Riley’s lack of visible passion. I’m glad Riley has added them to the mix!
