Am I the only one who gets sick of hoops after day 1 and welcomes baseball? There's only so much basketball I can watch.

Go Beavs.

Update: Tyler Smith to miss series with hand injury.

  1. I’m ready for baseball. And for those who get tired of Mike Parker, this just in…..he has a family event Saturday and will have to leave the booth before the game on Saturday is over. Jay Reese not available, so we will hear another voice; hopefully Jim Wilson can carry the new guy.

  2. Kavin Keyes would have tagged the runner out at second as the runner slid past the bag if he didn’t take his attention off the runner after originally being late on the tag

  3. Jerad needs to do a much better job at making contact and hitting the ball to the right side. His swing is way too long right now.

  4. Gordon strikesout to end the 2nd, Beavs up 2-0. Feels like it should be 3 or 4 zip, doubt the Forks (Gigs) have their spirit broken yet.

  5. Always feels like Beavers outfielders are in the perfect position defensively. Pat Bailey does a great job with positioning of the defense.

  6. Earlier in the week we talked about the errors/walks/HBP which cost the Devils a game against Texas Tech and the effect upon the confidence and chemistry of AZST.
That collision between outfielders won’t help those areas. A two or three run inning here would likely take the fight out of them.

  7. Conforto overslides 2b, safe with the steal. Hayes just keeping his balance, not intentionally interfering with the catchers throw.

This oversliding business has to stop, gonna cost big at some point!

  8. GB90 previously said “Jerad needs to do a much better job at making contact and hitting the ball to the right side. His swing is way too long right now.”

I think I will keep posting this for each Casper at bat until he shows us otherwise.

    • He’s having a typical problem a lot of guys have. He has such a long swing, when he connects he can smoke a ball, but he’s going to have a ton of swings and a miss because of the swing. More often than not he’s gonna miss. Coaching staff needs to work with him on shortening up on the swing so he can make a lot more contact.

  9. Devils get a lead off walk erased by a DP 4-6-3, that has to discourage them. Need another run or two now to put them on the deck. Going to b5 3-0 good guys.

    • Pat Casey wasn’t his coach in JC. Jim Wilson said Casper can’t hit curve balls and opposing teams know it. He (Casper) made a pretty good play at 3rd last night, On the video stream, it appeared to me that the bunt he put down had stayed fair and his sacrifice fly wasn’t so bad. ABs seem to be on his case, so I decided to throw in a little balance.

  10. Conforto thrown out. Don’t like a straight steal there with 1 out in that particular spot. Hit and run for a second time that at-bat would have been more ideal. But have no issue with aggressiveness, will pay off more often than not.

  11. #2 ranked Vanderbilt is down 7-1 in the bottom of the 8th to Florida. Beavers may be able to climb to #2 if they take care of business this weekend.

  12. Sixth has been good for the Beavs this season.
Looking at the line at this point: AZST: 0-1-1 vs. Beavs 4-7-0; it will be a real task for the Devils staff to keep them focused and working with ANY confidence now.
As I type, Keyes leads off the sixth with single. Lookin’ good.

    • Tomorrow will be a pretty big game for ASU if the Beavers are able to win this game. If ASU loses tomorrow, I think they get swept and a sweep and falling to 1-5 in conference play with UCLA coming in to play them next weekend could cause them to go into a pretty significant tailspin.

  13. That’s more like it, Casper. Didn’t get the bunt down but with 2 strikes had a very good approach and moved Keyes up to third which was needed the most.

  14. Boyd finishes a 1 hit shutout, should be again in running for PAC12 POW.
Especially since this is against a top 25 (not for long) team!
GO BEAVS, the most important game is tomorrow!

  15. Cal beats UCLA 5-1, Cal and Oregon State are tied atop the conference at 4-0 and the only remaining unbeaten teams in conference play.

    • Offense did a solid job, gonna take an even better job against tomorrow’s starter, Kellogg. Offense more than capable of producing against him though. Gonna be interesting to see how Andrew Moore does. Hard to keep ASU’s offense down for 2 straight games. Moore will need to be at his best.

  16. Although there are individual plays you can point to and complain, it was a masterful pitching performance and the one hit the devils had was weak even by bloop single standards. The Beavs executed so many phases of the game. The hit and run with Conforto when he hit the ball to the left side, right where the shortstop WAS until he went to cover 2b was a thing of beauty. A great night to be in the stands but I’m tired of freezing my ass off on Friday nights.

    • Gophers dominated from start to finish. Radio announcers were hinting that both Tubby and Howland are on short leashes if their teams didn’t make a run in the tourney. Just came out that Shabazz shaved a year off of his age also, won’t matter though I’m sure he’s one and done.

    • Hello? Have you ever seen Howland coach? He’s just horrible. Dixon has always been the man at Pitt, and Howland got a job in LA because of it.

Now we’ll see Dixon in LA next year most likely. I also remember Dixon as an assistant under Wallace at Hawai’i. That was a fun team to watch.

Trivia: Who is the winningest Hawai’i hoops coach of all time by percentage (not volume… that would be Wallace)? And why would I ask?

      • He did get them to three final fours. I get the great asst. concept, we experienced the Dan Monson vs Mark Few phenomenon here at Minn. Fast tempo plays to Gophs strengths, they really struggle in a half court game. He must not have watched any tape.

BTW, didn’t you pick CU and UCLA?

        • Did Howland get them there?

Or did some of this generation’s best players at their respective positions happen to play there and will themselves to success?

As lousy a coach as JJ is, he would still be coaching at OSU if he recruited and signed Farmar, Afflalo, Collison, Westbrook and Love… because he too would have made successive Final Four runs.

So the next logical question… is he a decent coach for being an awesome recruiter?

And, to answer a question with a question, is he the awesome recruiter? Or is John Wooden still doing the recruiting in Westwood?

UCLA and wherever Calipari is coaching are the only two places in the country where they are literally only one year away from a Final Four appearance every year.

      • would you replace Robinson with him? From Lebanon, OR maybe he would like to come back, after sitting out a season? Assuming Robinson fails next year.

          • Great… a lying rat who turns into a lying cheater… or at least finally caught cheating.

At least we’d get to see what our new tartan would look like as a pair of pants.

    • I can’t stand Mike Montgomery just because he laughed at some reporter back when he was asked if he was interested in the then open OSU job. CR took him apart twice that first year.

  17. Easy first inning for Moore, though he did throw a ton of pitches. About 20 pitches. Gonna need to be a bit more efficient pitch count wise the remainder of the day to pitch deep.

  18. Beavers starting to get some good swings on Kellogg, a lot of hard hit line drives and even the ground ball by Barnes was hit hard in the hole. They’re gonna breakthrough on him in the next couple innings.

  19. Moore got ahead in the count 1-2 and didn’t execute his 1-2 or 2-2 pitch and then had to throw a strike 3-2 and it was crushed for a bomb. 1-0 ASU

  20. Beavers still without a baserunner through 5 innings. Beavers got to start hunting fastballs early in the count. Kellogg has been getting 0-2 and 1-2 the entire day. He’s throwing a ton of strikes and firing a lot of fastballs up there. Might as well get aggressive.

    • All season the bottom of the order has done pretty well. Peterson, Keyes, JRod have spent a lot of time in the bottom of the order and looked good.
Today? not so much, not just Casper’s fault either.

  21. Conforto crushes a ball to center and unsurprisingly it goes nowhere. Bad luck, hit it towards the deepest part of the park.

  22. Still no hits through 7 innings. Kellogg has dominated the Beavers. Conforto has been the only Beaver to consistently hit the ball hard. A lot of pop ups and weak flies today.

  23. Wilson makes a good point. With Smith in the lineup Peterson may have caught that ball and we’re out of the inning with no runs scored. Instead it’s a run in and the sacks juiced with two down.

  24. Beavers just need one hit and that can turn things. So much pressure to get that first hit, just need to get it and see what happens

    • Those who don’t like Parker’s comments about the strike zone need to note that Jim Wilson has supported him. Not easy to define the zone from the camera but if Wilson says so I’ll believe it.,

      • And now a pretty clearly inside pitch called a strike to dispose of Peterson. Even with the camera angle it seemed obvious that the pitch was inside if you track the ball and then look at the plate when batter/ump/catcher get out of the way right after the call.
That said, the umps didn’t beat the Beavs today, Kellogg pitched well and the Beavs now need to flush this one.

      • Is there another Parker calling this game? Or is he calling it somewhere else? The announcers I heard were definitely not MIKE Parker.

  25. Wouldn’t you know it that Brocker gets the leftys and fails on the righty.

3 of the 4 runs for asu have come with 2 out.

      • Umps are known to make bad calls late in no-hitters, a walk could have potentially started a rally. The later it gets in these no-hitters, the umps will do hitters zero favors. Shouldn’t have been in that position though. Beavers hitters had awful at-bats all game and allowed Kellogg to get into a great rhythm and it was lights out from there.

    • It’s brutal, every damn pundit was babbling about St.Louis and their elite 8 or even final 4 capabilities. They looks like a mid-level P-12 team.

  26. Yanzick didn’t make much of his day either. ducks beat cats 5-1. UNC takes a double header today. ucla leads cal 8-2 in the 8th.

  27. Butler has a chance to put up the go ahead field goal with under 2 minutes left and the refs call a joke of a foul on Butler for going over the back even though there minimal to no contact when going up for the rebound. Pac-12 refs must be doing the game.

  28. a man named Miller came from Witchita State and we had 17 pretty good years….looks like the current Witchita coach could compete well in the Pac 12 in Corvallis!

  29. UCLA fires Ben Howland.
Winning the Pac-12 regular season title and going to the NCAA BIG Dance is just not good enough.
4 Years left on his contract.
CR will soon be the Dean of Coaches in the Pac-12 only behind Romar at UW.
BDC should immediately extend the contract so that some day OSU would own that title.

  30. Howland would have to have won the NC to avoid being fired after that SI expose last year.
Note to Dan G, Minnesota has dibs on Shaka Smart. Our new AD hired him at VCU and you still owe us big time for John Wooden.

  31. Congrats to the Beavs gymnastic team. PAC 12 champs!
Any chance Chaplin wants to take a stab at coaching the men’s
    basketball team?

  32. Oregon State and Arizona State close out the series Sunday at 12:05 p.m. PT. The game will air live nationally on the Pac-12 Networks. Note, video of the game can be found on pac-12.com but only for Pac-12 Networks subscribers. No free video will be available.

  33. UCLA spent about $2.5m to buy out Howland. Wazzu fans want to spend the same to stab Bone’s contract to death. But the two SoCal jobs are the only ones vacant at the moment. I’d give Bone, CR and Dawkins all one more year each. And I will never over-estimate Sendek’s ability. Stealing Carson from CR may have extended his life and shortened CR’s.

Dixon is now locked up for another 10 years at Pitt. Alford did the same at that school who lost to Harvard.

I’m hearing Pastner for USC. No idea on UCLA.

  34. Eric ?reland?@EricMoreland1527m
Preciete it Scott! RT@ScottieCanuck: Disappointed but proud of you man! Good luck in your future! @EricMoreland15 pic.twitter.com/KYWtGOL9o1

  35. Pat Casey just said yesterday’s pen performance “atrocious” but “we didn’t score any runs” and that he viewed the tape last night and said that you can’t give a good pitcher like Kellogg a strike that’s 6-8 inches outside. He felt the guy behind the plate made Kellogg much better. Oh, and it’s the first time a Pat Casey team has been no-hit.

    • I was at that game yesterday. The Ump was terrible. It is good thing the event staff drives the officials out of the park right away. There was quite a few folks hurling insults and yelling at him. Oh well, it was only one game fairly early in the season. Here is a toast to PAC12 officials the most consist accross all sports! Most consistently terrible!

  36. 1 out b4, Beavs up 2-1, new pitcher coming in for Devils.
JRod a double and Keyes puts it in play to allow Casper to score from third, JRod advances to third. Gordon HBP, so its runners on the corners with 1 out.

  37. Guys behind Conforto need to start producing. Dylan is having a solid day but Hayes is just not producing right now. Huge spot and he doesn’t even put the ball in play.

  38. Beavs benefiting from BB’s and HBP, have just 4 hits. Hayes overdue, that K with bags full a real lost opportunity, even if Casey questions the ump.

    • Oregon State is winning but wouldn’t say they’re playing well. Blown some opportunities and here goes Wetzler again with the walks

  39. I wish there was one start where Wetzler consistently throws strikes and stops allowing walks. He plays with fire every single start and now looks like he started a huge inning for ASU.

    • Not gonna be easy to turn this one back the right way, Child coming in needs to throw strikes and maybe get the DP, then Beavs bats have to come alive. I’m thinking it will take 6 or 7 to win this one.

  40. Mo should have changed with that DP, but two quick outs don’t help at all. Keyes works a walk and its up to Gordon to keep things going with two outs, a chance for redemption.

  41. This is getting hard to listen to. Single, walk and its runners at 1 and 2 no outs for Devils…..and the sixth is supposed to be the Beavs inning.

    • Just way too many walks. Last 2 games Beavers pitchers just haven’t been throwing strikes. Constantly falling behind in the count and it’s hurting them

  42. Top of the order, Beavs inning. If they can’t make some noise here I don”t know.
And, its one pitch one out to start……darn!

    • Arizona is young and pitching isn’t pitching as well as they’d like. They’ll pick it up in the 2nd half of the Pac-12 season

  43. Engelbrekt keeps finding ways to escape. 2nd time in last 2 innings ASU had runners on second and third and 1 out and didn’t score

    • Offense will do their part, just really struggling right now, getting Tyler Smith back soon is crucial. Also, Hayes will bust out of the slump soon, just having a tough time at the moment and it’s hurt the offense.

  44. I love Casey’s competitive nature and the way he stands up for his kids, wish he could give a transfusion of that stuff to Riley.
That said, his remarks about the poor job done yesterday by the plate ump, coupled with how he has handled umps today may (said may) have caused some distraction for the Beavs and some backlash (even unintentional) by the umps. Make any sense?

  45. Beavers were very fortunate to win today. Did not play well and ASU made some mistakes to help OSU. Gonna need to play better offensively from this point on, but a series win is a series win. 5-1 start is a great start, the bullpen got it done in some tough spots. They won this game.

  46. Can you imagine being a forks fan though. Lose 2 to the cougs at home and then have a chance to win the series today only to be denied. Another 6 inches on the double off the wall and it’s a 5-4 asu win.

    • Exactly why you can’t lose a series at home. Incredibly crucial to take care of business at home cause there are so many good teams, very tough to win a series on the road. ASU had some serious bad luck but also had more than enough chances to win, just didn’t get it done. Never thought ASU would start 2-4 in conference this year, they’re good.

      • I concur. I figured they’d at least get 2 of 3 at home against Wazzu. I am more puzzled by Stanford. How in the hell does a team that talented lose a series at sunken diamond against Utah?

        • Coming off a series in which they were swept at home by UNLV, that was a really bad series loss. I thought they were gonna be really good. Their starting pitching has been underwhelming at times and the offense has been hit and miss. Really underachieving, but with their talent at some point I think they’ll get it together and be dangerous come postseason.

    • And, the Beavs would go in knowing they can beat the Devils!
Still, it would be intriguing to face Ryan Kellogg again; especially if Hayes was hitting well and no one else had slumped.

  47. I blame the no hitter on the people talking about Boyd being pitcher of the week after just a Friday game. Something bad is bound to happen when people get ahead of themselves.

    • Yeah….we jinxed ourselves on that one! Two years ago I went to the home series against ASU ….but I remember was this old ASU fan, he said he had just driven his trailer up from ‘Zona and that he though Corvallis was cold — he mentioned ASU was hitting well and that he wouldn’t be suprised if they swept the Beavs….he jinxed his own team….ASU did hit well that series, but we ended-up sweeping them! Last thing I remember was him walking out at the 7th inning after our 2nd comeback in two days….LOL

  48. Not to jinx Scott Schultz but he’s off to a good start. In conference games he has 3 appearances and 3 saves with an ERA of 0.00. Teams are only batting .125 against him. For the season, 9 appearances with a win and 5 saves to go with his 0.00 ERA. Meanwhile, on the hitting side, Hayes is only hitting .130 in conference and Casper .091.

  49. In O-Live last night there was an article on the Beavers Offensive line and that there is enough depth to have an actual spring game, instead of a glorified practice. Does anyone have any more info as to the possibility of having a game this year? It would certainly bring in more than 7000 people and would be good for TV.

    • I saw that. Interesting that they have Bays listed as guard now instead of center on the depth chart. I’m assuming that is because they want him on the field faster and he’d have to wait for Seumalo to graduate if he stuck with center. I’m very encouraged with the young and QUALITY depth we seem to have on our offensive line. Should mean good things for the next few seasons.

  50. We go to no 2 in the rankings and no one comments?? I guess losing one of 3 at home is a little disappointing, But getting no hit at home ought to put an edge on the team. Gotta love Pat Casey.

    • I don’t know, don’t you think OSU is becoming a bit of a coaches graveyard? I almost think they need someone who has won elsewhere, but has some baggage that keeps him out of the running for more desirable jobs.

They couldn’t attract any NCAA tourney caliber mid-major coaches last time around. I’m pretty pessimistic on the future of Beaver hoops as far as being in the mix for the NCCA tournament. any time in the near future.

      • You may be right. But I think an interesting pitch could be made to a coach like Andy Enfield by offering a competitive salary along with (1) the new OSU basketball practice facility; (2) the PAC-12 and its national media capabilities; (3) a five-year commitment by BDC and Ed Ray to upgrade the OSU basketball program to national prominence. This of course would be difficult, but I think OSU gains some credibility from its nationally respected baseball program, and from a football program that was in the Top 15 for much of last year. But, again, you may be right that OSU basketball is a harder sell at this point than it should be…..
