Oregon Sanctions

108

Let the moaning begin: Article

The Ducks will lose one or two scholarships for three years, have some restrictions on recruiting and be placed on probation for five years.

They'll avoid the hammer, penalties like a bowl ban, rescinded titles or vacated wins. Those "looming sanctions" will no longer loom so ominously.

Fans of other schools around the PAC-12 will be moaning that the Ducks got a slap on the wrist, but the ruling feels appropriate and reasonable. The investigation took so long that UO deserves some credit for time served.

Appropriate and reasonable? So they get to a title game and 2 Rose Bowls with those players, yet only lose 1 or 2 scholarships, and this is reasonable?

UO deserves credit for time served? What time served? Scruitny for cheating and (negative) public opinion now count as time served?

That's nice.

Go NCAA.

  1. Gotta love the “time served” quote. Do everything in your power to drag out the investigation and then call it time served.

The blog’s writer had this in the comments section regarding the validity of his statements and his sources:

Dale Newton 232 pts AugustDuck Nobody can talk on the record about a pending NCAA investigation. Several sources close to the program, among them boosters, alumni, former athletes, members of the blogging community that follow the team closely and speak directly to coaches (off the record) all convey the same message. The Ducks aren’t getting failure to monitor and lack of institutional control. Minimal scholarships and probation. Official decision to follow in a few weeks. I’m not a news organization. I don’t do this for money. As such, I don’t have to justify or explain myself to anyone. But I have this story right, and my observations and insights on Oregon football are arrived at pretty carefully. Check back on my scouting report on Marcus Mariota as an incoming freshman http://www.duckstopshere.com/articles/player-profiles/getting-to-know-the-2011-oregon-duck-newcomers-marcus-mariota.html. I don’t have the access or time that the print guys and big money media guys do, but I do my homework, and my opinions aren’t colored by a stop at the Autzen Stadium press buffet. If I’m wrong, I’ll refund your subscription :). But when this shakes out in the next few weeks, I’m confident I’ll be correct.

    • There is no such thing as TIME SERVED in such affairs.    The investigation isnt a penalty…..its just a bit of bad publicity, like Harris speeding on I-5 doing a dope run to Ptld.      Time served, my ass.     That is just duck fan talk.

It must not have been possible to tie LaMicheal in to Lyles, or a bunch of that would have to be voided.

  2. Well, kudos those on this blog who had it right.    IMO such a ruling is ludicrous just in view of what we fans know.

A couple possible factors…..Lyles proved a poor witness, and the NIKE association really helped UO.     The cheaters won…

    Sheeeeiiiiiiiit

  3. I like how the author writes that the Ducks don't need to cheat to win the PAC, then goes on to say that pretty much every school cheats.  Then he suggests that the Rodgii got free food with Lamichael.  Dick!

  4. The thing that gets me is the 2nd major violation in a 5 year period rule (or repeat violator rule) appears to have no impact in this ruling. Whats the point of having such a rule if you aren’t willing to enforce it.

NCAA Bylaw 19.5.2.3.1, also known as the “repeat violator rule,” states “an institution shall be considered a ‘repeat’ violator if the Committee on Infractions finds that a major violation has occurred within five years of the starting date of a major penalty. For this provision to apply, at least one major violation must have occurred within five years after the starting date of the penalties in the previous case.”

Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

  5. OT: Ucks vs Gonzaga, down 2-0 in their half of the 6th the ucks tie it up on TWO walks, a WP, and a fielders choice!  Will their lucky ways end this weekend??

Back On Topic: Time served?? Unbelievable!!! You just can’t makes this stuff up.

    • Beavs can prevent that by playing D like they did at sunken diamond and following Casey's mantra…"throw strikes".

On the offensive side, Beavs need to swing the bat…ucks have several pitchers who throw lots of strikes.

  6. Whadaya think, would it benefit the Beavs for the ucks to loose one (or two) to Gonzaga?  Does it matter at all?

  7. Zags walk to load the bases with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th.  Would love to see them get a K here and go into extra innings.

    • THREE walks and a single give the 9th inning win to the ucks!
I am really looking forward to the Beavs pitchers having anything close to their typical weekend. If they keep the BB to a minimum and avoid WP’s I really like their chances.

      • Yep, and Gonzaga had a chance to end the threat with a DP but the secondbaseman booted it.  They were fortunate to get a FC out of it when the ducks committed a baserunning error and got hung up between 3rd and home.  But the Zags found a way to give it away.

    • ….and Oregon wins.  They're announcer says "they find a way again…..to get 'er done…"

get 'er done?  which school is the ag school in this state again?

  8. Two things:

    1. I'm not sure what was expected of this after Tennessee got hit for dealing with Lyles. There are a lot of things that go on in this town which are way worse, but the NCAA doesn't seem to care abot those things. "Big time" college football is just a money-grubbing joke.

    2. We Beaver fans are just sucking at following these most recent rumors. I thought Duck fan thought we were the only fans who cared about this in the whole world. Yet I cruise through PO and they don't mention anything on this now four day old "report" about a week-old rumor until yesterday either. And I'm told Scout forums didn't know about it either. But a quick google shows fans all over the country moaning almost instantly four days ago and linking to this blog. I see Michigan State, Tennessee, tOSU, UFla, eaTme, BYU, Notre Dame, Syracuse and on and on all linking to the blog and talking in the same cynical tones Duck fan accuses us of creating out of jealousy. We need to be more vigilant in our jealousy. Every other fan base out there beat us to this story by at least three days.

Beaver fans, we must not allow… a cynical, moronically ascribed jealousy gap!

    • Now that cheers me up!     Our blog team defense speed is just slow to the ball.    Then we dont even tackle well…. damn…

      We CAN overcome this ….GAP!

    • Institutional arrogance lends itself to wide ranging hatred!

My cynicism towards all things NCAA is so profound, I just don't care.  Maybe if Chip Kelly was forced to come back to Eugene and stand in the lobby of the Eugene Hilton for an entire weekend personally apologizing for cheating to anyone who walked by  (without being allowed to wear his visor) then I might raise an eyebrow.

  9. Man, this coming weekend is for all the Pac 12 marbles.    Oh, great Beaver in the sky….grant us strength and the will to win this series!

    • I'm happy to see Langsdork mining the fertile recruiting grounds of Tijuana, Mexico in search of the next Jacquizz Rodgers!

  10. ducks take care of Gonzaga tonight, 4-1.  They didn't pitch anybody that we would expect to see this weekend.  I'm including Sherfy as I don't expect him to be in any save situation.

  11. Angry has mentioned the value of using a team psychologist in relation particularly to  the FB team.  It has always made sense to me and I remember news of Casey using one a year or two back.  From an article on U of O softball, "…the Ducks have taken advantage of a university-provided team psychologist. Each team at UO has access to one but none take advantage of it like the softball team. "

Maybe it just isn't publicized, anyone know if "each team" at OSU has access to one?

        • Canadian schools are light years ahead of US schools. Their "senior" year is essentially a college prep year. I think Quebec is the only province now which just graduates kids after grade 11 regardless of age. Most other provinces have compulsory schooling for anyone under 18, making grade 12 superfluous for some kids. Apparently Malcolm was one of those kids.

    • Like I said a couple weeks ago, CR is pretty good at closing once he gets kids on campus. In this case, he closed a kid a year early. I don't know how it went down, but I'm happy it did. He was a 2014 target very early, just like Nickens. And he was just now starting to blow up. You all know the type from football recruiting. He's one of those kids "lesser" schools offer very early just to get in the door, then USC comes in with a month to go and takes him away. Nickens is the same way. And I would really love it if Georgetown slow plays Nickens through the summer. I think we're where he lands if the Hoyas wait on local players instead of making him feel like a priority. And that's with the expectation of him landing another 20+ offers before the ESP.

I guess we're not waiting until November and the early signing period to get this one.

        • Very cool – perhaps they can communicate in French when they're on out on the floor together in a game (or just 2 of them) to rattle the opposition a little.

"Canadian schools are light years ahead": Might I generalize that Canada is light years ahead of the US – most particularly in health care and gun control.

          • Considering their "gun control" is only (well… not only, but mostly) involving handguns, I would agree. Any legislation in the US involving anything but handguns doesn't even pretend to comprehend our gun violence problem. If you pull up any stats on the subject, I guarantee it will show that the aspects of the Brady Bill which dealt with handguns were the only effective rules enforced in the last 100 years.

Well… keeping in mind that nuclear missiles are "arms," I guess we could expand the conversation a little to just wonder aloud how the US government could possibly be allowed to breach the Constitution's second amendment to infringe on our rights to own one (or more).

Taking it the other direction, why can the government disallow me from carrying a couple of my favorite knives in public?

And health care isn't even a comparison. If really really really wealthy people didn't come to the US to die of their particular ailments which are terminal for them and everyone else, we wouldn't be 37th in the world for health care. We might be 36th.

  12. I have to hand it to Riley et al. The Twit maps are getting attention.

Between this and tote board planes, we're doing some pretty original stuff. Here's hoping more recruits are succumbing to the #BeaverBarrage and drinking the #BeaverJuice.

*It sounds… wrong. Or does it?

    • Do you think  Rizzardini has something to do with this good stuff?

"At OSU his primary area of focus is on the external constituents that include: fan experience, ticket sales, website, social media, Beaver Sports Properties, licensing, advertising and media relationships."

I hope so – I love the thought of someone working in the background to make things happen.

      • There are a lot of recent hires in the AD who are Larry Scott smart when it comes to social media and donor requests. There's a reaon I think Dan Guerrero is an idiot.

          • To expound on that thought, the greatest compliment I can get as a billiards player is that I seem to see my shot four shots before it happens. I kinda giggle at this compliment, but it's still high praise. I got the same compliments for chess when I was a kid, but I thought chess was boring.

I actually like chess. But I can really see how it really is boring. I'm a victim of the same.

Anyway, playing pool was much more dynamic. And it resulted in wins or losses which were obvious upon play. There were some people I knew I had o run the table to beat. There were others. I always played better when I knew I had to make the shot.

I imagine someone who might want the OSU AD job in 2016 might come on board and make his case with big splashes across the board before assuming his mantle.

            It's what I would do.

And if it doesn't happen, then another school gets to experience the Luck-O-the-Beavs.

          • Sorry to be so thick, but will you please connect the Larry Scott, Dan Guerrero, "that reason" and AD dots for me?

  13. don't really follow baseball, so do you guys think the beavers can win the series?  i'm just sick of them always chocking to uo in every sport.

    • It's a homefield advantage the past couple years. Two years ago, I went to the series and watched us get killed by the home plate ump (in each game) calling inconsistent balls and strikes depending on the half of the inning. I don't expect different results this weekend.

I do hope that our boys can overcome this obvious advantage. Defense will be key.

      • "Defense will be key"  Yup, and I'm thinking JRod's arm will be a huge factor.

The ucks  and Beavs are both successful stealing about 70% of the time.  BUT, the ucks are attempting nearly 40% more steals than the Beavs.  If JRod performs as he has so far, he'll be taking away one of the few offensive weapons possessed by the ucks.

    • Of course, sports jinxes aren't valid; the SI cover one, for example, or that Heisman trophy winners aren't usually successful in the NFL. Or that when I leave the room the Beavs make a huge play and that the Beav games I'm unable to listen to or see are the ones in which they pull a huge upset

I'm somewhat fearful of this one: That a player returning to his home town will not perform well. Andrew Moore in Eugene is a bit spooky, especially if it's true that the Ducks didn't show any interest. I think it's a big deal.

  14. Luck O the Beavs= Luck O the Gophs.

2014 BIG football schedules released with the new divisions.

Minnesota crossover games;  Mechicken and tOSU. Thank you Jim Delaney!

Wisky's: Rutgers and Maryland. Iowa's: Maryland and Indiana.

    Bend over.

  15. I'm a fan of all of these Beaver Football videos and tweets they've been putting out throughout the offseason to keep fans up to speed on what the team is doing.

    • Screw the diamond in the rough crap. Get some cut and polished diamonds like Brandin Cooks.

      #MR….get your ass to Jared.

  16. They don't get much bigger in the conference season then this weekend.  Tomorrow's game will be HUGE.  Winner will gain the momentum of the rest of the weekend.  This will be a good challenge for us, and if we can execute with precision. #Beavlieving  #hitthemwheretheyaintboys
