Some things I’m hearing:
Luke Del Rio will be transferring to OSU. That would give OSU 7 QBs on the roster. Seems like overkill. Riley using quantity to make up for quality?
Kohton Miller is the carrot being dangled in front of Beav fans by the recruiting sites. He likely will not sign with OSU, but since there is a 5% chance they’re playing it up for subscriptions. This is sad.
Riley apparently didn’t know Skotte and his dad had arranged an interview to talk to him. From Mamma Machado: Riley said, “hmmm, I wonder if that is what it is about….”
Again, pretty sad.
The number of commitments and their ranking are both down year over year. This could be an anomaly and there’s still time for it to change. In general the class looks weak, and I haven’t heard anything about the staff working hard on recruiting or being aggressive. So, it seems like the same ol’ on that front. They will get a combination of low hanging fruit and mid-tier players and have to “coach them up” (with a coach who has semi checked out). Correct me if I’m not seeing it accurately.
Also, AngryBeavs is up for sale. I’m in no rush to sell it and will keep the current, slow pace if I don’t get a strong offer, but I when being honest with my output it has declined over the past few years (I thought it was due to medical issues, but the drive isn’t returning). Fact is it’s a lot of work running a blog, and when your passions lie elsewhere it starts to become more of a drag than a blast. I keep hoping something changes with that, but it’s starting to feel a lot like dating a lame girlfriend. For things to change this regime would have to change. That would ignite everyone. But everyone is content that “that ain’t happening unless you write a check, Angry” blah blah blah. I feel like I’m repeating myself too much these days (and possibly being overly negative out of sheer boredom with the lack of news/excitement around the program), and I could be spending that time more productively. So, if anyone is interested email me.
I’m #1!
Very nice!
You are #2. Jack is always #1 around here!!
Wait… what are we talking about?
You’re #2……if you know what I mean…..
Angry, hopefully baseball will get your enthusiasm back. If everyone can stay healthy, this could be a special team.
True. But don’t you guys feel like we’re repeating a lot of the same stuff? There isn’t much interesting I can think to talk about that I haven’t already. And if you try to present a new idea, people say “Riley isn’t going anyway deal with it”, and that discussion basically ends there. I do love baseball. But I’m going to be an observer this year–I’ll make threads but not a ton of commentary. Too many other hobbies popped up (including shooting shotguns–@GWH), and I have been enjoying the outdoors etc now that I am recovered. It’s hard, and unless you create a blog it’s hard to describe. There’s pressure to publish, and if you don’t want to or have nothing to say you start to feel anxiety about it.
come up with a realistic basketball coach to replace robinson or a realistic assistant to helphim.
Yes, we are repeating ourselves, me included. The patterns at OSU aren’t changing, and if we don’t see or discuss new ideas, it gets old.
Hey … Angry .. So talk a look at other OSU sports. Anything wrong or right with other teams?
Glad you have recovered well, man!
That’s not a bad place to start I guess. If Bobby D is really taking his job seriously, then there are some programs which are just floundering right now. And I’m not talking about big money programs where millions are needed to buy out coaches.
We’ll start with men’s soccer… because I hate Lynn Snyder. Steve Simmons had one good year–his first. He was 5-4-1 in the conference. Since then he has been 1-9, 3-6-1, 1-7-2 and 0-8-2.
And then there’s volleyball. The last three conference records are 8-14, 4-16 and 0-20.
We’re not even talking about rising to the level of mediocrity here. We’re talking a level of suckitude so great that I was just compelled to make up a word.
So which will it be? Will it be buh-bye for Simmons and Liskevych? For one but not the other? For neither?
It’s sad that this is now the litmus test for our athletic department’s ability to do its job.
Well …. how about this. Since those are low $$$ positions, a push for coach replacement might actually get BDC’s attention — “Hey, I can get some of these anti-Riley aholes off my back by firing someone I can afford to fire!”, he thinks…..and does it.
Once he gets the feeling for that, the dice start falling, tne ball gets rolling, the snowball,…..snowballing … And he works his way UP! Courage incrementally got….
One can only hope.
I’d say the recruiting class is following it’s normal pattern of “this years class is pretty lame” and then the next year it’s “this class is pretty strong with good gets in 2 or 3 position groups”. It’s with these alternating quality recruits within position groups that the Beavs never get over the hump and into top 15 land consistently. It leads to holes and gaps amongst the 22 players on the field and significant weaknesses in position groups that leads to losses.
I’d say that’s accurate.
Yup. Spot on.
and when the Beavs do get those “good gets” they are head and shoulders above everybody else on the team, so they are over used, inflating their stats and getting them early NFL recognition (Quizz, Cooks, Crichton and almost Mannion) ending the cycle early.
Do you think Cooks would have gone to the NFL this year if he hadn’t been leading the nation in nearly every WR statistical category? Would he have been leading in those categories if the team had a few other decent WR options to spread the ball around to? I’m not saying he wasn’t talented enough, but I think he would still be around if he hadn’t been the only true offensive weapon on the team this year.
And they probably leave early fearing injury/overuse.
Hey, those stars should indeed think of that. They get a pro contract and then get injured, they have gained a bunch. They stay and get injured and whoooosh goes all that money.
As soon as you see you can likely get drafted, its a money game. Cooks was damn lucky Mannion had a good year.
Del Rio story.

I like in the comments somebody wrote “Roll Beavs!”
Apparently others in the comments didn’t realize he was third on last year’s depth chart and was a favorite of many to take over the starting role. The kid wasn’t afraid to walk on to the BCS championship team to compete with five or so other QBs for his own future. He wasn’t afraid to compete (and beat out) Bateman last year. I doubt he’s quaking with the addition of any new PSA of equal recruiting ranking prowess. I think this is all about Kiffin and the timing/numbers with Mannion and what that can do for his future.
Roll Beavs is what our opponents will do next year
I’ll give you a roll of pennies, a cardboard cutout of punky brewster (which coincidentally could run block better than quite a few of the OSU O line players) and a 12 pack of Natty Light compliments of Larry Eustachy.
Deal?
You have a cardboard cutout of Punky Brewster? As a kid or as an adult?
This has the making of the best thread in the history of Angry Beavs
If you’re talking Indian Heads and Wheats, maybe.
What the hell is a “naokins” and what’s up with the Utah St. reference?
a typo. and I made no Utah St reference.
Wasn’t Eustachy a very successful basketball coach at Utah St.?
Iowa St
just looked it up and you are correct. He had a successful run at Utah St before Iowa St. I was unawares. Carry on
Yes. Adult. I keep it right next to my Michael J Fox tattoo artist kit
This next to a tattoo artist kit? That’s kinda weird.

Mom? Is that you?
what do you expect from someone that regularly eats napkins? Sanity and normalcy?
Point taken.
Major constipation is what I would expect.
Comeon……give the alcoholic a break. Cant be easy dealing with that. I drink a ton sometimes but have no (genetic?) inclination to go addict so I’m not……but those with one just spiral in.
That said, I dont like it when he goes pessimistic about beaver teams, clearly believing they are about to self destruct. Yeah, he is right often but an announcer should be more upbeat, even so.
I EAT NAPKINS.
Actually I thought he ate a plain napkin — he was at dinner, not in a bar where he spilled a drink on his napkin? If napkins came shiskey soaked, I’d add em to my diet….lol.
So when you shit, you don’t have to wipe? A self wiping turd. That is up there with some of the great developments in human history.
Part of the Green Movement?
green bowel movement
no, these are the plastic kind I took from my son. I tried to pass one off as a tip at a local restaurant after a 3 course meal of napkins but the waitress just smiled and handed it back after she patted me on my helmet.
I was thinking that Parker at least dipped the napkins in syrup. Dry napkins is a brutal meal!

On the baseball front, Makauley Fox is enrolled.
The kid from Home Alone?
If Home Alone is that island nation off the eastern coast of Australia, then yes.
Home Alone 5 was supposed to be set in Perth, but production was halted because nobody gave a shit anymore and Caulkin was 24 years old.
Hey Angry-
My Magpul furniture finally came in for my 590. Love it. Took about three minutes with a rubber mallet to get the fore end to work with my factory heat shield. Mounted an insight tactical light I had laying around and a six shell side saddle and she’s pretty well complete. Only thing left is a new tritium/fiber optic bead. Something a little more visible in low light/high stress.
sweet! that’s high tech. i’m not on that level yet. still learning everything, and i’m going about this very slowly for a variety of reasons. i do love it, though. more than college football. maybe angryhunter will be my next site.
Been looking at some different safeties too. I really like the location of the Mossberg safety compared to the Remington, and a more enhanced safety lever might make it even better.
I actually like my old Winchester’s safety best, it’s right in front of the trigger guard, right where your finger should be when you’re at the ready. You can rest your finger tip right on the safety button, click it off and go to the trigger all in one motion. Never could get myself to like the Remington setup behind the trigger guard.
take this with a huge grain of salt, but Mel Kiper has Cooks and Chricton going in the first round of his mock draft.
I could see Cooks going first round. S.C is more like a mid 2nd to 3rd rounder…but teams mess up every year and get enamored with a guy, so maybe that happens. Mel Kiper is an idiot for the most part.
Yup. Mel is a tool.
I thought the comments that came about Riley never even discussing the draft with SC were interesting. Riley seemed to hint that he would have advised Scott to stay.
One topic that hasn’t been thrown around much is what should the athletic department goals be? Off the field stuff. There doesn’t seem to be any consensus in the dept or among fans/alumni.
Should they be self sustaining (no funds from the university)? How do they increase the # of donors and retain them? What other sources of revenue is out there? What kind of marketing can they do to increase the brand? How much risk ($) can they take in accomplishing their goals?
Goals? We don’t need no stinking goals.
QB is the most important position, if you are gonna go overkill that is the spot. Open competition for 2015 sounds good to me, may the best man win and a couple others will likely transfer if they lose out. Not seeing the downside.
I think this Del Rio kid has some serious potential, like coaches sons at QB, they typically understand the game.
Also, I have no interest in buying the blog (wouldn’t have the funds even if I did) but if you are looking for some help with commentary I’d gladly entertain completing some write ups.
If it happens (still only a rumor) we’d have 7 QBs on the roster, but two would be sitting out and two would be redshirting.
In 2014:
Mannion: RS SR
VanderVeen: RS SO
Kempt: RS FR
Kline: sitting out
Del Rio: sitting out
McMaryion: Redshirting
Mitchell: Redshirting
In 2015,
Vanderveen: RS JR
Kline: RS JR
Del Rio: RS SO
Kempt: RS SO
McMaryion: RS FR
Mitchell: RS FR
I think McMaryion is ripe for a position change, because we won’t allow him to play to his greatest strengths. I could see VanderVeen transferring because Del Rio or Kline seem, to me at least, to be better prospects and I have a feeling one of them beats him out.
I guess I really don’t see the problem with it.
—
You’re misquoting somebody about Mike Riley’s statement about Skotte. He’s well aware of what that meeting is about.
—
The number of commits is actually up by 4 at this point from last year. Considering this year had a week later (and a week longer) dead period, we’re fine in terms of numbers. Star ratings are down. But a couple of the 2* kids look really impressive to me. In fact, I think our best recruit is 2* according to one service.
In particular, Jonathan Willis. He’s somewhat similar to Scott Crichton, an insanely undervalued 2* prospect. The kid is going to be stupid good for us as a OLB, especially if we run some 3-4. I think he’s got the potential to step in and start, or at least be in heavy rotation next year. We lose something in losing Crichton, but Willis is the real deal and will put up big numbers immediately.
The Oregon State (Plan B)eavers
Cant cut it as qb on your current team? We’ve got a roster spot for you!
Kempt, Kline, Del Rio all started out somewhere else and are now landing in Corvallis. (assuming today’s reports are true)
kempt’s cincy commit hardly counts as starting somewhere else.
And Kline WILL NOT be on next year’s roster. He must go to CC before coming to OSU for 2015 season. Del Rio, however, could potentially be on campus by spring term redshirting 2014. However, should Del Rio transfer, I find it highly unlikely that Kline would come to OSU. At the CC he is free to transfer anywhere in the country.
Del Rio and Kline were both elite 11 QBs. These are not players that are “plan B” if OSU got this type of talent at every position they’d be winning conference titles.
The Beavs are the plan B for those players. Not the other way around. And Kempt was set to play for Cincy till a coaching change and pulled offer left him scrambling to find a plan B school.
Angry – have you thought about bringing in other people to write posts so the onus isn’t all on you?
Obviously, you need to be picky about who gets the ability to post but there are several regular commenters that I wouldn’t mind reading on a steady basis (and plenty more that I would choose to ignore).
If you read the “Outkick the Coverage” blog, Clay Travis is the main contributor/editor but there are posts by other people that he has approved and/or granted access to.
Just a thought to keep the blog alive and lessen your load.
Yes, I am open to that.
My favorite osu blog is actually osuprof. I wish I could get that guy to write here, but he’s a Pollyanna. He does the in-depth analysis I used to do when I cared more, and in general I respect his work, even if I disagree with the conclusions.
I’ll keep going with AB, but it will be a lot of “general discussion” threads with various bits in them, because there’s not much going on and I just don’t want to beat a dead horse. Until this current paradigm shifts we’re mostly rehashing the same thoughts, sometimes with a slight twist on things. This is the slowest recruiting season I can recall as well.
no offense but you never did analysis like OSUprof. But, then, no one has.
I think the term you guys are looking for is statistical compilation. He doesn’t really do much in the way of analysis. Sometimes that’s a good thing.
Kohton Miller is the carrot being dangled in front of Beav fans by the recruiting sites
Nobody has mentioned this, and I think it’s the most interesting thing going on right now. Pretty pathetic that rivals uses long-shot 4-stars to try to reel in subscriptions. Zero integrity over there. They do this every year and fans fall for it despite OSU never winning those battles. As Jerry Seinfeld said, “like a dirt farmer dangling a carrot in front of a mule.”………………
What I’ve found interesting is that Oregon has coming late and offering OSU targets Oliver, McGary and Miller. Helfrich doesn’t seem like the kind of coach who would win an intense recruiting battle so he may be settling now.
I think there’s a decent shot at Miller. He took an unofficial during the summer and then the official visit during bowl practice. UCLA is the team to beat.
Precisely why I stopped subscribing. I can think of several high end recruits they dangled that I got excited about and fell into their trap. Dion Jordan (Oregon)…LJ Moore (Oklahoma)…Devian Shelton (USC)…and several others come to mind.
Not to mention…Mama Machado and her husband are ultimate douche bags in person.
wasn’t lj moore committed at one point? And Shelton visited campus and was never considered a likelihood if SC got involved.
How is this dangling?? was it dangling when dashon hunt narrowed it to boise state, nebraska and osu and then chose OSU?
If you don’t like the info fine, but most of the stuff on there is pretty accurate. every school in the country, fans and coaches, have certain players like Moore and Hunt that they hope they can get and have a realistic shot at. Some come, some don’t.
Hunt doesn’t fit the criteria for this discussion. He was a lean to OSU, and he committed before the January period this discussion pertains to. I agree about Shelton. He was gone to USC if ever offered. But that was well known by all as well.
The players dangled are ones who we don’t have a good shot with. They are highly ranked, and out of respect for Riley or whomever they pay lip service to OSU being the first to offer them by “placing” them in their “top five.” They are the kids who play the hat game on signing day or just before.
We don’t get them, and we rarely ever had a shot during the period (January) pay sites hype our chances for their own marketing purposes. Owa and his orange polo was about as close as they ever got to being accurate on these marketing ploys.
Nebraska and BSU were VERY MUCH in the mix for Hunt but I don’t really care about that it was just an example.
Anyways, what do you expect news outlets (including Blitz, Olive, Scout, ESPN) to do? If a 4 star player mentions OSU, or is even offered a scholarship. I as a fan want to know.
Oregon State hoops offered 5 star Stephen Zimmerman* in hoops – do I care if we have literally 0% chance at him? No. But I am interested that OSU offered him, it means Rob or one of his coaches (who is it?) watched Bishop Gordon, or knows someone or watched his AAU etc., He doesn’t offer every 5 or 4 star kid. Just like Riley. Miller and Mcgary have mentioned OSU, visited OSU and put them in their top 4…so why shouldn’t Machado, Schnell etc report it? Its up the the fans to say…’ya thats nice, but I’ll get excited when he commits.’ What upsets you guys is that Beaver Nation, the fans, are the ones getting excited before anything happens (and that perhaps we, as fans, often forget that 2nd literally means zip in terms of recruiting (ignoring Del Rio situation here….))
Further its a blog, its a message board. Theories, hype, what ifs, are what its about especially in the off-season. And if you want free info, go to pure orange or here, its usually about 24-48 hours behind Blitz.
There’s a lot of reason to dislike paid sites, or even Oregonian coverage, but reporting that Kolton Miller is interested in OSU is not one of them.
*Since you’re a hoops guy, Jack perhaps something more realistic than Zimmerman. Switch out Zimmerman for Faust. Were recruiting sites “Dangling” Faust? If you define dangling by a big time name that has a 95% chance of not coming to OSU – then yes. But don’t you wanna know Robinson is on some these guys even if he’s not gonna win? Don’t you wanna know a top 100 guy has OSU in his top 3-5? 3rd place may mean nothing but its still something to watch, a trend could develop etc., and thats what message boards are for.
Also bring back the basketball blog! As much as you wanted Johnny Dee and it looks like hes a stud player (though have only seen him play 2 games) I was interested in OSU going for Stephen Holt who has the look of a NCAA PG at St Marys and would have been Craig’s first ORegon player (and tie to the vaunted Jesuit program). For the record I believe Holt was class of 2010, Barton class of 2011, Dee class of 2011. who should OSU not have offered?
“Nebraska and BSU were VERY MUCH in the mix for Hunt but I don’t really care about that it was just an example.”
I never said they weren’t. I said he was a known lean to OSU and committed before this annual pay site game takes place. I guess the NU pay sites could have tried to hype the situation in the same way by spending last January posting stories about how Hunt might still switch to them. That would be understandable since the free NU sites are SOOOO much better than the pay sites anyway.
Stephen Zimmerman was offered by OSU and others as soon as rules allowed. While the teams who eventually will get these types of players fight annually over the here and now kids, schools like OSU try to bend an ear or two of the couple years from now era. It rarely works, but all it takes is one kid to change a program’s fate. So there are 25 schools who try the same year after year and are forgotten for over two years once the kids sign somewhere else. It is much more common in football for a kid to keep one of those early schools in the mix. Most often you read a quote from them about that school being their first offer or first BCS offer. That’s how we end up on some of these final month lists. But if I catch a tweet from one of the pay hacks, all I need to do is research a kid for five minutes before I find that quote in one of his local rags. And the sense I get most often when I find that quote or something similar is that he keeps OSU on his short list for similar reasons to why he has to put up with his siblings–his mother tells him to. But that’s not what the suggestive headlines and language which hints at hope (for the low low price of) says.
“What upsets you guys is that Beaver Nation, the fans, are the ones getting excited before anything happens (and that perhaps we, as fans, often forget that 2nd literally means zip in terms of recruiting (ignoring Del Rio situation here….))”
I can’t speak for anyone else. But what upsets (well… makes me roll my eyes) me is that the pay sites create the narratives of hope and suspense, hype it with suggestive headlines and vaguely written “articles,” then suck the money from saps who want to know about and discuss nothing but the hype they created. It’s a little embarrassing to know that alumni of my school pay good money for this.
“Further its a blog, its a message board. Theories, hype, what ifs, are what its about especially in the off-season.”
I’m glad you said this. You tried to pass them off as “news” above, but I was going to let that pass. Still, I have to wonder why anyone would pay for this. Even if you want exclusivity or privacy in such a venture, it can done for free.
“And if you want free info, go to pure orange or here, its usually about 24-48 hours behind Blitz.”
Incorrect. Rarely is anyone more than 15 minutes behind the pay sites in terms of news. In fact, both PO and here have been well ahead of Blitz, sometimes by hours. Hell… I was three years ahead of everyone when I claimed that I was sure Gwachum was going to be a DE for OSU. Or maybe I was just wrong for three years? In any event, there isn’t any news that isn’t known. I was bored one morning a few years back, so I watched a couple twitter feeds and timed Blitz action on the news. Sometimes Blitz is very very slow to follow up on news visible to the world from their own network.
I don’t know if Faust was dangled. It was pretty clear before the signing period he would go to either Maryland or Memphis. If pay sites did hype it, then it would have been dangling. But nobody relies on the pay sites for hoops news. There are so many free sites out there. Sometimes there are multiple sites and sources for just one school, let alone within one city or region. And almost none of them deal in innuendo.
Yeah… Dee and Barton were 2011. Barton wasn’t a bad signing. He’s still serviceable as someone who won’t make many mistakes. But he does so because he takes no chances. He filled the slot we all hoped Dai-Jon Parker would fill in that class. I would say Parker is the same as Barton at this point, except he had a good game against UK on Saturday. Maybe he’s finally awakening?
Kid to watch this winter/spring is Jeff Garrett, Manderson’s teammate.
Holt was 2010, which means he committed and signed in 2009. Coach Rob was up against it in his first couple years. Every other school on the West Coast had recruiting networks in Oregon, but not OSU once JJ destroyed those ties. Nobody from Jesuit was coming here for a while after JJ. Besides, CR had been recruiting Starks for years and probably truly thought he could be a viable PG in his system.
I haven’t ever subscribed to Rivals, but I’m always curious. My friends who fill me in on rumors typically do so about 12-24 hours before I see it here (unless Beaverkman is actively posting at the time.) Most of what I hear doesn’t make it to the main articles until commitments actually happen (which do get here before Machado has time to put up the article), so I think most of that happens in the forums.
I would say this statement isn’t fair : “It’s a little embarrassing to know that alumni of my school pay good money for this.”
If I were ever to join it would be during the promo (that their currently running) $99.00 annual subscription for $99.00 credit in the fan shop. I get close to pulling the trigger, but then always go over to the store and don’t find any gear that’s speaking to me. I imagine a lot of people subscribe during this period and then drop off after the year, which is a pretty good deal if they get clothes like.
Plus Mike Parker Says: “BeaverBlitz.com is where I go for the most comprehensive coverage of BEAVER RECRUITING ANYWHERE!!!” How could you not buy in?
The gear value is a fair promo. Not having ever seen the store, I’m guessing I would never want any of what they’re selling… like looking at a Wal-Mart selection of stuff I know will last me two washes. But some people find value in that stuff.
The embarrassment is in paying for recruiting news. Even if we were a week behind, it’s not worth a dime to know what’s going on early. But the contention that what’s being discussed in their forums is earlier is also false. We may not discuss this stuff as early sometimes, but that’s more likely because we don’t prioritize the news as much as we do the process. If you go back a couple months, you’ll find that I dropped Dre Massey’s tape here with a short talking point. I did that because I knew we were recruiting him. Was it in the Blitz forums at that time? It certainly wasn’t news enough to make it to anywhere 12, 24, 48 or even 336 hours later. I knew about it because I happened to see a local South Carolina recruiting blurb in one of their small papers. But just looking at the timeline on that news on the pay sites over the last day tells me it’s fresh news to them. So I can suppose it was discussed in their forums for a day or two before that?
Right now I’m most interested in why we have never gone after Marcus Griffin. He was supposed to be a package deal with Bowman. But we’re nowhere in the running for someone who is very good at a position of constant need? Someone here told me he was shunned because we were “full up” on the D line. Yet I see all sorts of Dline PSAs and Jucos getting hype. Who the hell dropped the ball in Griffin’s recruitment? What do the discussions say about that?
Like I said, I’m more interested in the process than I am in the news I already know or will know in a matter of minutes.
I will give Rivals props in one area. Alex Kline’s twitter feed is on top of basic info for hoops recruiting. If he’s not first with news, then he’s within minutes of it, sourcing it pretty well. You can take that basic info and run it through the google machine to find numerous stories once they become available. And he doesn’t discriminate between the lowest of schools and the elites. He just posts what he knows. The kid got a job doing something he loves before he even got to college. So he’s cool in my book.
But I’m still not going to pay for any of it.
I believe I may have mentioned this, and from the research I think it possibly came from a Sept 5th article on rivals, which I don’t have a subscription too, and thus can’t post it here. But within the article Griffin is quoted as saying he has talked to the Beavers but they had not offered because they didn’t know if they wanted to take any more DL commits in this class. So if somebody with a rivals sub can maybe look up that article and confirm it??
I’m just mystified about this. Griffin is a very good student (of both the game and academically) and has the talent and size to be very good at a position we have historically been and still will be short. I guess the coaches think they can always switch Olinemen over to that side since they’re “just standing around doing nothing”… because that’s been a stellar success in the past?
I guess it’s also a good thing our one DT commit is so extremely solid with us. After he spends a redshirt year doing nothing, he, one junior and two seniors will be all we have. Yay 2016! Why develop DTs from the ground up when you can supplement your roster with hopeful Jucos?
I’m starting to understand why our pass rush and run defense have really sucked for the last several years. As I bang my head on the wall, I have to wonder if this is what angry means about us just repeating ourselves year in year out.
I think you make a lot of good points. I’m not currently subscribed to blitz, but I do think its a slightly faster resource than most sites (other than twitter) but I suppose we can agree to disagree, its not far off either way. I am unconvinced Barton deserves a scholarship honestly, the skills he has brought the past 3 years have been extremely replaceable (ball handling is really the only thing).
Though, I would also say Dai Jon Parker may have been the ultimate dangle among hoops recruits. I don’t think he was ever coming here, it was just a matter of if OSU was finishing 2nd or 3rd for him. Same for the Hopkins kid that went to Colorado. But I’m still glad the info was out there, and it gave me something to hope for at least.

Parker was a legit dangle. But he ran the show himself. There was no middleman necessary. He went through another online site for his hat party, and he openly discussed his recruitment among the local media in the Atlanta area. If one couldn’t find all the info one “needed” from reading ajc.com, then one didn’t care enough to “need” the info.
I’m watching Parker play now btw.
I don’t know why anyone would have bit on a Jaron Hopkins dangle. Cooke was the target at that time, and I think we got the better player.
Here is what 24/7 thinks, this was before the Uo offer and he is visit this weekend to ucla

AB nation writes Canzano article this morning…
http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2014/01/canzano_time_for_craig_robinso.html
As I read that last night, I couldn’t help but think our thread from about a week ago was pretty much summed up for his commentary.
And I don’t think he uses the expression, “show me the baby” correctly. I’ve only heard it once years ago. And at that time it was a sales term meant to satisfy the customer. When trying to sell to a customer, the customer doesn’t want to hear about the tireless efforts in developing and creating some product or service. They want to see the product or service and make it their own. So stop boring them with how you were in labor for 42 hours when all they want to do is goo-goo-ga-ga your cherub.
I’m not sure what that has to do with making excuses… unless the “baby” is something nobody really wants to see, and the parents are telling about the labor pains because they want to hide the truth from everyone.
I’ve never heard it used to mean “stop making excuses.” In fact, I don’t know of any expression or maxim or quip that means this. I’ve only ever heard anyone say (and used myself) the words, “stop making excuses.”
Anyway, it’s not a word for word rip-off. But the sentiments are clearly precisely the same. As I think about it, the sequence of thought may be the same as well. But I’m not really caring about it enough to go back and check that work.
I thought it was a very odd phrase, but I think Canzano was asking for a finished and successful product from CR, not sure how the baby analogy (it that’s what it is) fits into that?
I would just say you’ve been at this for six years, it’s time to see a consistent winner going forward. I think success at this point would be to finish about .500 in league play and a NIT bid
How does it not make sense?
Hell, I typically don’t give a rip about Canzano’s opinions, but his analogy in this case makes perfect sense. For 6 years, we’ve had to listen to him bitch and moan about how hard it is to win here, how shitty his coaching predecessor’s were, how before he got here, we couldn’t even win a game, etc. Tired of hearing the process, after this long it’s time you show us something we can be proud of, even if it is only glimpses of what the future holds.
So far, his tenure has been a giant shit sandwich and everyone who loves Beavers basketball has been forced to take a bite.
“So far, his tenure has been a giant shit sandwich and everyone who loves Beavers basketball has been forced to take a bite.”
Whiskey approves of this message. +1000 internets for you
Agree. If you know what you are doing, 6 years is plenty. And some games seem to show he actually has the talent, but just cant coach them.
The AD just needs to focus on the quality seen in the baseball program, and get CR out of there.
….and if Canzano is on it, there must be a buzz besides a few blogs….
I agree with this except for Canzano’s baby thing making sense. That expression has nothing to do with making excuses. It has to do with, “I don’t want to hear about the mileage this car we’re standing next to gets. I want to drive it like you promised I could.” I don’t know where he gets the idea it means, “stop making excuses.” In fact, half the column is trying to explain this incorrectly used expression. He could have written, “Stop making excuses. Winners don’t make excuses,” and saved himself 300 words.
In that article, CR sounds like he’s been reading too much Lindsey “Buffet” Schnell.
that’s a good nickname for her
http://www.quickmeme.com/img/5f/5f9086d7ddc325f64940dcd19e168146390c23dc4f8b1f530b47f0197af73599.jpg
I vote we throw out the baby, the bathwater, BDC, Banker, Langsdorf, Read and Cav. Let’s abort this baby!!!!
This seldom happens to me.
I put $50 on the Seahawks to cover -7.5 vs. the Saints last week.
As the week wore on, I got the feeling that the game was going to be close. The line moved to 8.5, so I took the Saints and the points for another $50.
Hawks 23-15. Won them both.
If I could be that lucky every week…
drinks/napkins are on you then?
The yucks were way overrated don’t play and defense and can’t rebound at all. CR should win this game in Gill. If the Beavers win it will only put another pillar under the “Robama is as good as we can get, AND HE’S THE FIRST LADY’S BROTHER!!!” platform. So basically what im saying is that this game is a lose lose situation, and even Jack can’t deny that! Even though Jack is constantly denied by his own family and all 17 of his cats.
You can’t even get your straw men right.
Who in the world ever said CR is the best we can get? That’s the Riley excuse, and it’s false there too. He was the best we could get after JJ nuked the program. But the things he has done during his tenure have built the program back to a point where all that’s left to do is win. He has shown that he is an excellent transitional coach who can build from nothing. But he hasn’t shown that he can win. While it’s been excusable for a time, it’s a non-starter from here on out. He is now the victim of the success he’s had in everything other than the win column.
Rueck will be the same way, except he hasn’t had to concentrate on anything except his team (or lack thereof when he got here). But I expect a little more from him. It’s a lot easier to be a head coach when you don’t also have to be an associate AD.
And if anyone wants to bring up Pat Casey as a counter-argument, then remember that your counter must include how you think what Casey does is easy. That man is an extreme outlier in college coaching. I doubt we could find more than a half-dozen people like him, if that many.
Skotte interview: http://www.bendbulletin.com/sports/beavers/1688326-151/football-future-for-bends-joel-skotte-in-doubt#
“The trainers here (at Oregon State) thought it was muscle spasms in my neck so we didn’t do anything all season about it,” Skotte said.
I thought they fired Barney Graff for stuff like this, yet it still goes on?
Yes, mis-diagnoses still goes on.
No wonder Riley denied knowing what the meeting was about.
I think the moment the doctor tells me I have a spinal injury is the moment I decide football isn’t worth playing any longer. Good luck to Joel on his recovery.
Yup. Not worth it.
Love seeing the buckeyes lose, by the way.
Was at the game. Very fun. Full house and the Barn was a rockin’ as they say. Young Pitino looks like he might be the real deal. Team is playing so much better and with a much more entertaining style than they did with grumpy old Tubby.
where is Tubby at these days?
Texas Tech hired him about a week after he got shit canned here.
AD hired the name. Tubby should have retired, but his ego would not allow it.
Dang … an O-live poll has almost 70% voting CR out…..
….and some comments said BDC should go…
Its ANGRY BEAV FEVER!!!
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/01/craig_robinson_facing_mounting.html
Sounds like Kyle Peko got into a car accident today, was lucky to avoid injury. Can’t say as much for the car.
http://t.co/fGf32PkuVc
pfffft. I’ve wrecked cars way worse than that and walked away
Blitz is getting worked up about this prospect: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1001978/highlights/84831389
He looks fine, but they’re calling him a jelly donut, which I guess is annoying slang for “blue chip”…
Tape is funny. Looks like it’s in slow-mo. As soon as the kid finds a seam he’s gone, did anyone catch him all season?
I wonder what his 40 and 100 times are. He resembles Victor Boldin. What are the rules on motion prior to the snap? Can we have wide receivers on opposite sides of the field cross paths to run an option fly sweep? If it’s legal get Danny working on it ASAP!
Looks like a smaller and much slower version of Tatum Taylor.
Oregon loses one of their top recruits
http://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2014/01/oregon_football_recruiting_bud.html
Budda the Beaver?? I like how that sounds.
Ha, yeah right. I could get used to that. I think he’ll end up at USC. Sark almost had him going to UW before he chose Oregon. Now that Sark is at USC, I could see him following the sunshine. UW is supposed to still be in the mix too.
Not even in the mix.
Ucla and UW are the two.
I like it when bad things happen to any Ducks sports program.
I don’t know if Mason is a good coach overall, but it just kills me that OSU can’t see themselves as a potential destination for a guy like this. Certainly, his (talented) defenses have been effective. I have NOT looked at his body of work in detail, but he looks like the kind of up and comer that OSU should at least consider instead of the ol “we can’t do better than riley…”
http://college-football.si.com/2014/01/17/report-vanderbilt-expected-to-name-derek-mason-head-coach/
Are you talking about as a head coach? With Riley contracted through 2020 or whatever it is, and a team good enough to make a bowl this is a futile conversation.
Now finding and up and coming up and comer to replace Banker would be the ticket. Which again, unless Banker gets a head coaching job somewhere ain’t happening.
Banker feels spent to me, but since Riley doesn’t comment much about coaching performance who knows whether Banker is being held accountable for slipping performance or Langsdorf for that matter.
The Beaver coaching staff seems like a group of brothers and BDC (the father) doesn’t set any goals or give direction, so they do what they want from season to season knowing that they only need to achieve a nominal level of success (or one could call it mediocrity) to keep their jobs.
Meant as a head coach. I know the buyout is an issue, I just mean from a coaching quality issue and the idea that a coordinator might come to OSU for a head coaching gig. I don’t expect BDC would buyout Riley and actually hire a guy like Mason.
Agree with Dwill, but you say the right thing. All the comments about Corvallis as a destination help BDC to maintain his mindset, if that is what he has.
Just getting Riley when he was energetic and then Erickson for a bit puts the lie to this. Keep saying it.
Erickson always said his biggest mistake was leaving Oregon St
I think Erickson’s regret is the year extension for 6 – 7 season. Does anyone know if Erickson had the same contract as Riley?
Not even.
Only Coach K and his lifetime contract compares to what Riley has.
Who’s idea was it to put the CW basketball game on Sunday against the NFL instead of today against nothing?
If OSU had anything to do with the decision, good God they are dumb
They didn’t.
Yeah… just like football start times, hoops dates and times are a function of the TV providers. Don’t waste your breath trying to blame Bobby D for this. Concentrate on the other pertinent things that make him ineffective, inefficient and obsolete.
Del Rio is a Beav!

Can any of these seven QB’s put on 40 pounds and run block?
Can he bring his Dad to help the Coaches ?
Can they both recruit ….
The final puff piece by the “The buffet” at the boregonian

One last Oregon State football story about Mike Riley, his faith and his family
lmao could the title be anymore cliche for her and mike riley!!
It should have been titled, here’s my last story about me gargling the OS/Riley sack. Can we get someone at least somewhat objectionable to follow/write stories about OSU football. I am so tired of the rah rah, lunchpail U, doing it the right way garbage. EVERYONE loves Mike Riley. We get it buffet
And this was a “football” piece?? Gimme a break.
If the guy would really coach, then its nice he’s a good guy. But that aint the case these days. So I dont give a shit if he were a saint. Once upon a time, college football was just about sportsmanship etc…..but that’s long gone.
Sounds like Lindsay is lamenting leaving the warm, nuturing cocoon that is Mike Riley’s “beaver family” and going into the real world where some head coaches or AD’s have the nerve to hold people accountable for mediocore performance.
Totally off topic, but does anyone else besides me think that Serena and Venus Williams look like gorillas? Not trying to come off as racist but I have always thought that and seeing one of them on sportscenter tonight after losing a match just reminded me. Good lord those are two homely women. Nothing about them even remotely attractive.
“not trying to come off as racist but….” Translation: this sounds racist but I don’t give a shit.
Ummmm……
But, but…. some of my best friends are racists.
I actually think they’re hot as hell…
you might want to get your eyes checked. Or put down the beer goggles maybe?
Yes on Serena (outside of her crazy line judge rants)
Pass on Venus
wtf
I’d say if you’re not trying to come off as racist, you probably shouldn’t compare African American women to gorillas. Especially 2 days before MLK day.
what am I supposed to say? They look like elephants? The fact that MLK day is on Monday is irrelevant. Do you disagree and they don’t look like gorillas? Jesus, it is really fucking annoying that people can’t speak their minds anymore because someone might get offended. If someone told me I looked like a fat pig with a penis growing out of my forehead, at least I’d appreciate the honesty.
You can say whatever you want and it won’t offend me. I was just saying that your attempt to not sound racist failed.
Heh heh… maybe the Willliams sisters need to show us their long form birth certificates?
what you said was incredibly offensive. Please go away.
how about you post your mailing address so I can send you a box of kleenex.
boregonian piece on Robaminson’s revolving door rotation. Pssst! Newsflash to anyone that gives a shit. It doesn’t matter what his rotation is or who he puts in there until they learn to play defense. Which won’t be happening anytime soon.

I’ve bashed CR with the best of them and they most likely will get pounded today, but Craig gets a star in my book for callling out Altman and his year after year senior transfer bullshit. Whether legal or not the Ducks never do things the right way. Nice karma on their three game losing streak, I’d like to see a miracle make it four!
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/basketball/commentary-robinson-not-a-fan-of-transfer-rules/article_1032eaf2-7fe4-11e3-9b6b-0019bb2963f4.html
well, they don’t play defense either so it’s not an impossible task
its a ncaa prob not an altman prob.
The fact that craig doesnt understand how to get transfers is the sadder issue here
name a graduating college senior that would want to transfer in to this train wreck. Go ahead. I’ll wait
Don’t get me wrong, Altman and his staff “understand” the rule completely and have Uncle Phil monies and facilities to make it happen. CR is not going to get any talented graduated seniors anyway, but he makes a great point about how these transfers aren’t supposed to be reached out to until they declare their intent, but they’re somehow ready to go to Oregon in a matter of days. If they really want to play for another school they should sit out a year, plain and simple.
Riley embraces transfers apparently
Angie Machado ?@AngieMachado1 31m
Appears #OregonState will add another transfer, this time from speedster WR Rahmel Dockery (@RahmelDockery) who left #WSU this summer.
Unleashing his inner Altman.
Loved the kid in HS.
He’ll have to sit out correct? Riley’s accepted regular transfers before a la Matt Moore.
Altman’s taken a cue from the Wisconsin football playbook with graduated seniors with one year of eligibiltiy left. They are ready to go to U of O seemingly overnight and don’t have to sit out a year.
He should be good to go for this season. He sat out last year.
Looks like Leach wanted him to play corner and he wanted to play receiver.
Yup. He was also a 7′ high jumper in high school. He’s now going to the correct school. As I recall, he had academic issues which made him a grey shirt in 2011. So 2012 was a redshirt year, and he left Wazzu before last season. So he should have three to play three starting this year.
I remember his HS tape. He broke a lot of ankles. He should be an immediate PR/KR specialist as well. So Riley can take Bolden off those duties. Of course, I wish Riley would take Read off those duties as well.
If only we had a T&F program. We missed out on a bunch of elite NW talent simply because we don’t. And I’m not just talking football hybrids like Dockery and Tatum Taylor. There have been kids who are elite T&F athletes who likely would have gone to OSU just for that program alone.
I do hate Lynn Snyder.
After Read gets through with him, he will master the art of going straight up the middle and fall down on the first hit at the 20 yard line.
OSU +2.5 with an o/u of 161.
I’m not touching the head to head for the same reason I’m all over the over. OSU gets to play the one team in the Pac with a defense worse than their own. If anything, I’d say take OSU because not only is Nikegon crappy on D, they are tiny. But their strength is our weakness. They live and die by the trey.
Well these two transfers are interesting, not sure if they’re game changers. Del Rio claims to enjoy pressure and expresses high self-confidence, which would be a nice addition. His father apparently prefers Luke understands defenses so he can read and perform better at QB, another plus.
OT – Looks like so far Denver is keeping Blount in check….musta watched that BSU game tape. Watch out Denver fans in the first row if this continues.
Hoping for a Seattle/Denver, “AFC West” showdown…
Of the transfers IMO del Rio is the biggest upside. I liked him last yr, and he would be right in the mix at Alabama. He was the only other qb to make the travel squad after the starter and back-up. Kline I am not so impressed with, his accuracy needs improvement. Rickety is interesting, but I wonder about his ability to stay on the roster? Maybe he turns into Reggie Dunn? It also makes me wonder if we will be losing Villamin as he still is not been cleared to practice.
“Watch out Denver fans in the first row if this continues.”
I fully expect Blount to go “full on Blount” as the Pats are getting manhandled.
Go Broncos! Horsepower bitches!!!!!
Beavs look like a team that’s not used to late game leads
