Can you be surprised if you don’t know what to expect? I mean unless a possum rolls into the stadium and crosses mid-court to the roaring cheers of the crowd, I guess that would surprise you no matter what you expectations, or lack of them were huh?
i say don’t ever expect a win and you will never be disappointed and will occasionally be pleasantly surprised.
There’s really no use in getting so emotionally involved in something you have no control over. It’s great when they succeed and I’m happy but I’m not going to let college sports ruin my day.
Spoken like a true bandwagon loser. YOU are part of the problem. You ain’t no star buddy, just an f’ing errand boy. Why don’t you crawl back into you moms basement, and go sleep it off.
By the way, Marcus Colston’s play today made me realize there’s a real need for end of game management training. Players seem to freak out, and they’re not the brightest guys to begin with…training these guys on how to play end of games could be a niche market. And no, I will never think Victor Bolden scoring was the right play given the opponent’s ability to score.
Nope, and the beavs have never committed a penalty, lost a fumble or missed a field goal in the red zone and come up with zero points. The other team always has a vote, big mistake IMHO was for Banker going into a soft defense instead of making a limping Oregon QB earn it.
A guy named Bryan Burke writing in Slate magazine does a good job debunking the kneel down myth using the the Auburn- Fla state game which was pretty similar to the OSU game.
There is a fairly big difference in win probabilities from the Auburn game and the Civil War. The Beavers could have won the game with a field goal while Auburn could have only tied the game and forced overtime with a field goal. I don’t have the time to do the math but I can assure you that the same guy writing the article in Slate would say that the correct play mathematically in the civil war would have been to go down at the 5 instead of scoring a TD with 1:29 left. Of course there are risks associated with not scoring the TD but these risks are built into the win probabilities.
I believe if you look at the top of this thread I predicted this would be a loss. I was surprised they played well in the first half on offense. But the defense for the most part has not been good. And it’s been even worse in the 2nd half. A good team doesn’t need to bring their A game to beat the beavs for this reason.
Any guesses on CR’s first “go to” lame excuse? He has some quality canned answers to explain his ineptitude. I am still partial to the “I had an excellent game plan” and will be quick to criticize the players. I say by 3rd sentence he will put it on the players. Just my opinion.
I don’t give a fuck about his excuses. I stopped listening to him a few years ago. The fact that he admitted he doesn’t know jack shit about playing defense speaks volumes and he should not be coaching in the Pac-12
He’s used up so much psycho-babble I’m not sure he even knows what excuse to pull out of his ass anymore. He seems to be milking the “learn how to win close games” theme this season even though it’s a senior laden team.
Hey, Craig you think maybe you’ve had enough time to “teach” Berto, Devon and Angus about winning close games or do they need another year?
His favorite/shitty-est go to is “You know when I got here, we couldn’t even win a game!!!!” That’s great asshole, well, you won 3 last year. Just pack it up and get the F*CK OUT OF HERE AND TAKE YOUR SHITTY ASSISTANTS AND TALENTLESS BIG-SKY ROSTER WITH YOU!!!1!1!1!!!1!
going by conference records his first two seasons they won 8 games. They have not done that since. Eye test his best team was 2 years ago. That, I’ll give you.
Looks about the same to me, maybe 5 or 10lbs lighter. I just like the power, speed, and grace. He has moves for a big guy, but the power to finish a run and extra gear to break one. If he could catch and pass block he’d be a great back.
And does anyone know what Collier did wrong? He goes from carrying the team to playing 14 minutes tonight? As a senior, I’m sure he feels great about that. What’s the over/under for when this team goes below .500? I’d say five more games. This has to be CRs last season, right?
Well, if he is wise….and I think he is…. he looks around for some “higher” post that tears him from this one. Reluctantly, he moves on….knowing that if he stayed he eventually gets fired. He knows by now that he isnt cutting it as a BB head coach.
Fortunately he has some name standing and such a post may come calling.
I think this makes some sense. He has shown he has the chops for the fundraising and rebuilding part of college sports. It’s only natural given his experience. But knowing that competitiveness leads people to wanting to succeed at their dreams, I think he sticks around as coach as long as he can because it’s the only stick left in his craw. Let’s be serious. He’s not going to be hired away unless we have stellar success from here on out. If that happens, we (you, me and everyone with a lick of objective sense) want to keep him. It’s do-able with the talent on our team. Those kids are good.
Where he fails isn’t in upgrading the program in terms of facilities, exposure and talent. He’s increased all those exponentially from the hole we were in when He who will not be named left this program in a huge pile of shit. His best season was not his first. That team was terrible until the post-season. That’s one reason to keep him. His teams do respond to his coaching at the time it counts most. But it’s the body of work that counts. Losing your first four (five? six?) games of the year is only good when you’re rebuilding. Losing three of four conference games is the same.
When you do this season after season you deserve to be identified as ineffective as a coach. There is the possibility that he can go mid-major and succeed. But this is not mid-major, and it shows.
I hope for the team to meld and succeed now. But I know this is unlikely given past performance. We’ll likely have a decent three week showing sometime this season. And it would lessen doubting voices for a while. But it’s like football. You know the five game win streak will end, and a losing streak is on the horizon. If it’s forgivable in football, why wouldn’t it be so in hoops?
We’ve been trying for years to raise that bar. But we’re so stuck in that mentality. And people who complain about darkie in the White House when discussing the set bar for OSU sports as a whole just make the argument silly. There are hard numbers to be had for football, hoops and baseball (and other sports). Effort and wins are shown in these numbers. If you’re not whining about Riley when you rant about Coach Rob, then you’re immediately failing in this argument. If you bring external evidence, you are immediately ridiculous. rsteve has it right. There is only success now, a mid-major post or an AD post which will save Coach Rob’s professional career. I worry about what another season after an unsuccessful now will do to this program. I’ll wait until this season ends to recap it. But I won’t put up with a gift season in the face of failure like we constantly do in football.
Unfortunately, I think we’ll have to do so anyway.
His first two seasons they won 8 games in conference play. In all honesty his best team was probably two years ago when they won 21 games and 7 in conference. But, these last few years the Pac was extremely watered down. It has gotten better, but imo OSU continues to spin its wheels and not gain traction. I don’t see this years team winning 7 or 8 games in conference play.
The Pac was worst in 2008. There were just no players in the conference after everyone and their mothers left for the NBA. It has slowly become better until two years ago. Then the talent and coaching in the league just picked up again. And now it’s the best since 2007. I think this is the best OSU team we’ve had in two decades in terms of talent. But the combination of them being used improperly, the Pac being so good… and not playing defense just kills them.
That’s the frustrating part. If this team just played defense 10-20% better than they currently do, they would win some of these close games that CR claims they’re still learning how to win. I call bullshit on that. If they just played some better defense, they would. But that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
I HOPE CR CHECKS HIMSELF IN TO FAT CAMP SOON. SON OF A B*TCH I HAVE NEVER SEEN A LAZIER MORE WORTHLESS CARBON FOOTPRINT IN MY LIFE. HE SHOULD BE THROWN IN JAIL FOR STEALING FROM THE UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS ALREADY IN MASSIVE DEBT BECAUSE NOBODY OS HELD ACCOUNTABLE IN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT
Maybe he should start taking vacations in Mexico. Then you would see a much lazier excuse of a human. It’s been proven by a previous coach of a Pac school in Oregon.
YOU’RE CORRECT, JACK (A*S) – DON MONSON WAS AS LAZY AS THE COME. ARE YOU SERIOUSLY IMPRESSED WITH ANYTHING CR HAS DONE? DID YOU RIDE THE SHORT BUS TO SCHOOL AS A CHILD? WHY DON’T YOU GO READ A PHOTGRAPHY MAGAZINE THEN DO SOME YOGA, AND THEN GO F YOURSELF! I WILL NOT STAND FOR DUMB ASSES LIKE YOU WHO CONTINUE TO TRY AND PUT LIPSTICK ON THIS PIG!!!!1!1!
I don’t think Gary Jr. is going to be anywhere near the player his dad was, so Glove is probably just glad his son will get a chance to play major conference hoops. Although major conference and Beavers probably makes some laugh.
OT: Jim Wilson tweets, “Oregon will promote LB coach Don Pellum to replace Nick Aliotti as Ducks DC. Second yr. in a row UO opts to promote from within.”
How bout them lady Beavs , 7 straight over the Ducks. If you watch them play you will see a very well coached team that is getting better each game. Also they are very young and with Rueck as coach this team could do damage in years to come. What I’m afraid of is BDC not keeping Rueck around.
Great fundamentals on display. I especially liked that the lady Beavs didn’t lose composure when going through that streak of fouls in the second half.
Rueck has young kids himself and seems devoted to OSU, I doubt BDC can screw this one up.
Am I the only one who thought the PAC12 commentators were openly pulling for the ucks during most of the broadcast?
it was a good hire. But BDC put himself in a situation where very few coaches wanted to come. It was logical to go local.
A rare good hire by BDC but he surely made Rueck’s life more difficult by holding on to LaVonda. No doubt the football program didn’t appreciate losing to TCU and thereby missing a bowl game either.

No credit for the Rueck hire to BDC. The WBB program was in such a bad place, Rueck was far and away the best candidate to apply for the job. A NC at a lower division, OSU grad and lover of OSU sports. Even BDC isn’t stupid enough to mess that one up.
What are the transfer rules for a walk on? He’s not on scholarship, so it seems like he should be able to transfer without sitting out a year, but I’m guessing the rule still applies. Wonder why he would come here if Cal’s qb is transferring in too? Also, Riley must not have alot of faith in Vanderveen/Kempt/McMaryion/Mitchell if he’s having 2 starting caliber guys transfer in after Mannion leaves.
The transfer rules are mostly the same for walk-ons with one caveat. They can transfer once without the one year of ineligibility if they were never recruited by the school. If he never took an official visit, was never offered a ship and wasn’t really contacted by the coaching staff of that school, then he can just walk away without penalty.
Good. Competition is good for the team. I think Mannion would not have had the first half of the year he did, if Vaz wasn’t pushing him.
Once Mannion graduates, it’ll be Kline(so), Kempt (so), Vanderveen (jr), Mitchell (fr), Maryion (fr) and Del Rio (so). I would guess one will transfer out by then too.
It does have legs according to espn.com………………………….
Del Rio will strongly consider transferring to Oregon State, a source told ESPN.com.
Luke’s father, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, has a close relationship with Oregon State coach Mike Riley. The Beavers recruited Luke out of high school and offered him a scholarship, but he ultimately chose to walk on at Alabama instead.
Alabama’s change at offensive coordinator, bringing in former USC coach Lane Kiffin after the departure of Doug Nussmeier, coupled with four-star quarterback David Cornwell enrolling early, could have played a role in Del Rio’s decision to transfer.
I’ve read a few rumors about Kline and Sonny Dykes saying he wouldn’t sign off on his transfer to waive the 2nd year of sitting out in conference, although another CAL player recently transferred to Arizona and had the 2nd year waived after filing an appeal. It’s too bad the NCAA allows teams to control these kid’s lives when coaches are able to switch teams without any notice.
Either way, if Kline decides to renege on his decision to transfer, that would open the door for Del Rio to snatch that starting spot the year after Mannion leaves. It sounds like he was many people’s favorite to take over the starting job at Alabama next year, and I like to hear that he is eager to learn everything he can from veteran players.
All of these things considered, he probably will never end up a Beav, and will somehow score a last second game winning touchdown against us for some other team in the near future. Luck ‘O’ the Beavs…..
If he goes the JC route for a year, then it’s out of Dykes hands and it doesn’t matter if he signs off on the deal or not.
As mentioned by several CGB members, it is likely Kline and Tagaloa will sidestep Dykes’s approval by going to a JC for a year and then head to whatever school they please unencumbered
But, but, but… the P he couldn’t beat out is playing in the Pro Bowl… in Hawai’i… because he was good enough for his team… the Rams.
This Allen kid whose uncle played for the Beavs did nothing in college… except win the Ray Guy Award twice… and some meaningless All-American stuff. Where’s he playing this month? Denver? Maybe New Jersey? For some weak team named the Patriots?
Pshaw says I. How can you even try to compare the two?
I’ll second that. I was pleasantly surprised that the Beavs were able to beat the ‘furd so now I don’t know what to expect tonight.
Come on Beavs surprise me again.
Beavs will lose if they play the way the did Thursday night. Cal is a much better team. I expect an L tonight. C’mon beavs, surprise me
Theyre trying their best to surprise you
I know. I’m in complete shock right now. Who is this team?????
Man, it looks like the insertion of Cooke and Moreland getting energetic has brought a rebirth of this team.
Beavs up 45-35 @ halftime. Offense has been very good. D average IMO, but better. 2 alley oop dunks by Cal to end the half did not help
I didn’t see the 1-3-1 once.
However, I did see some substitutions at the end of the 1st half that I wasn’t wild about.
For some reason I’m expecting CR to return to his old ways and go with the 1-3-1 which will lead to a bitter defeat.
Prove me wrong CR, prove me wrong.
Dr. Ray it’s time to get off your ass and fire BDC!!!
The second you believe they will break your heart.
There’s really no use in getting so emotionally involved in something you have no control over. It’s great when they succeed and I’m happy but I’m not going to let college sports ruin my day.
Yeah, you’re right. Let’s all just kick back and let that stupid mother-fucker continue to learn about coaching at Oregon State’s expense.
The big question is: Is that stupid mother-fucker learning or is he just collecting a big fat pay check?
Dr. Ray GET OFF YOUR ASS AND FIRE BDC!!!!
No, you’re right. Let’s make angry comments on a blog. That will change things.
Spoken like a true bandwagon loser. YOU are part of the problem. You ain’t no star buddy, just an f’ing errand boy. Why don’t you crawl back into you moms basement, and go sleep it off.
Amen. On thing that makes me nervous is the Beavs went 7 for 8 from 3 point land. That can’t continue.
exactly. and the D has been nothing to write home about. Especially at the end of the half.
Ryan Allen huge mistake on that fumble. But can’t blame him really because he is not in that position often.
and it didn’t even take 9 minutes for Cal to storm back and take the lead.
Not playing that kind of D. Slam dunk off a made free throw?
Cal now up double digits. This one is over.
Haha. Told you.
The 1-3-1 IS BACK!!! CR is reverting to his old ways!!!
$#%^&*(!@#
I believe if you look at the top of this thread I predicted this would be a loss. I was surprised they played well in the first half on offense. But the defense for the most part has not been good.

I seem to recall his first season being his best. With Jay John’s players
You seem to recall incorrectly.
going by conference records his first two seasons they won 8 games. They have not done that since. Eye test his best team was 2 years ago. That, I’ll give you.
WRONG!!! It was in the first sentence. It might have been in the second but it was before the 3rd.
:-)
Guilty pleasure, but I really like watching legarrette blount run.
He seems to have matured, too.
wanna bet on the maturity?
I hate to say it, but he looks like he’s in excellent shape also. Has he dropped a few pounds since the Duck days?
Looks about the same to me, maybe 5 or 10lbs lighter. I just like the power, speed, and grace. He has moves for a big guy, but the power to finish a run and extra gear to break one. If he could catch and pass block he’d be a great back.
cause you’re a duck fan

Callier always goes MIA in conference play.
Mr Milkcarton.
we can only hope it’s his last season

I can’t wait for Sunday’s CW game. With the pathetic D both teams play, it could be 120-119 without any overtimes.
I think most people here that bitch about CR also bitch about MR.
MR & CR are not bad guys, they both have failings…and they both could use some help.
Hiring assistants that provide strength, in areas they are weak, would go a long way toward silencing the bitching.
Of course. Maybe CR should consider an assistant that knows how to play defense maybe?
Mark Banker?
He’s a defensive genius.
yup. To the tune of the 100th ranked total defense this past season. Awesome
LMAO!! I can see the article in SI by Lindsay Schnell now — Mark Banker, the defensive genius in both football and basketball…..

you forgot probably also one of the only people that would have taken the job considering what it pays.
Yeah … that was a fucked up situation. Thank god Rueck was around.
It does show how important coaching is….
Rumor floating around that Luke Del Rio maybe leave alabama and enroll at OSU. Jack must not likely Lane too much…
Not a done deal, but it does seem to have some legs. Which is wierd because many like his chances to start for the ‘Bama.
It could be to force ‘Bama’s hand on a schollie.

It’s official he is leaving the Tide, are the Beavers really his next choice? Is Kline still coming to OSU? Gonna get crowded in the QB dept….
Del Rio lose a year now? I don’t know, I still like McMaryion if he puts on some weight, I could see Mitchell and maybe Vanderveen leaving

EAD Dykes
it would make no sense as he was an Erickson guy but any interest in Tim Lappano? former OSU OC, let go by the Lions
Baseball – 30 days away. But still no roster is online yet.
Anyone hear of how many of the freshman made the team? I guess I’m somewhat surprised when guys sign and aren’t drafted, yet don’t make the team.
OT, but fun to tweak Angry…
Flipping through ESPN.com and came across their All-BCS-era team, any guesses who they picked for punter?

Ugh!
So obvious for anyone without a pea-sized, brontosaurus brain.
