People will ask, “Angry, why even bother doing a writeup on this game?”
Well, the Oregon State media is being disrespectful of the opponent. Meanwhile, the Beavers are 16-32-2 in 50 games on the road versus Washington State. That’s why. Then there’s the weather…it’s looking like snow tonight, possibly at game time tomorrow, and winds of 10-20 mph. Snow neutralizes a running attack, while wind an aerial attack. Interestingly, the Beavers .478 winning percentage versus the Cougs is their best versus any Pac-10 foe, meaning the Beavers have a losing record versus everyone. That’s pretty disheartening to admit and accept.
Yes, the 2009 Cougars are terrible. But, the Beavers are overly confident, dreaming of Ducks and Roses and being told all they have to do is show up in Pullman. That’s not a good mindset for a game in harsh conditions. The Cougars are also starting a backup QB, a scenario that always manages to give the Beavs trouble.
Granted, what should happen is a 40-14 shellacking. But I don’t believe in kicking a program while they’re down, even if it’s just verbal castigation from a blog in the middle of nowhere. I think the Cougs get a lift from the weather and their new QB, and their effort will be somewhat respectable.
31-17, Beavers.
The Beavs will sit the starters at the end of the 3rd. Quizz will get 146 yards and 3 TDs. We win 41-14 and the Civil War is for the Roses.
I don’t doubt any of that, as evidenced by my comment “Granted, what should happen is a 40-14 shellacking.”
My issue is with the Oregon State media acting as if we just show up and win. This is still DI football. And weather will be a factor in this game. Not to bring up Michigan/App State (maybe Stanford 41 point dogs @ USC circa 2007 is more apropos) for the billionth time, but these things happen and the game should be taken seriously. If it is, Beavs win big.
I think all the hype is media driven. There’s one thing Riley has been able to do and that’s institute focus on a weekly basis. It may seem that the guys are playing a cat and mouse game of ‘yeah, we dream of roses too.’ But I think they truly know the gravity of this week. I don’t remember off the top of my head, but I think it was the Green Bay team of the late 80’s who were shown footage of a winning 49’ers team as an example of what to do to win. The team was understandably upset that the coaches presented another organization as who (whom?) they wanted to be.
The Beavs have a wealth of footage to show them exactly who Wazzu is from our own history, and that is the major reason for our losing percentages against conference foes. I remember standing in the student section bleachers with one of my friends in the driving rain when the 1991 Huskies pummeled us then posed as a team at midfield with roses in their mouths. Sans roses, that should happen tomorrow. But that game wasn’t too far removed from the 1985 game which could be the horror a humble Beaver fan knows could happen.
But I’ll expect the best for another reason related to Pettibone’s first season. He knew that the one thing that would save him was to beat the rival. Three weeks before the Civil War he had the practice squad dress in green and yellow, and he ran their offense non-stop. We lost a decent game to Cal and a romp to UW, but the win at Autzen was sweet. We shut them down, and we won on a gimmick play in the end.
I expect Wulff to have his team looking ahead to the Apple Cup. It’s the one salvation for his team. They have more to distract them than just another loss to us.
I wonder what colors Riley would have the practice squad wear these days. Oh! I know! Black.
And I think you’re being generous giving Wazzu 14 points. I’m going to say that we’ll be up 21-0 by the end of the first (or early 2nd). Then we’ll finish the half with a FG and a TD. The first team O will come in for one, maybe two drives in the 3rd, and the back-ups will score one of their own.
Beavs win 44-6.
Yes the Beavs gotta win. Yes, they better focus on the Cougs. That’s all critical. Got that. But don’t forget the Ducks gotta win too. They have to take Arizona out of the mix. They have to. Period, Not just for their own sakes, but for Beaver fans’ sakes too. And their task is much harder than the one the Beavs have.
The ducks don’t have to take out Arizona. USC or ASU could do it just the same and is possible. I would in fact prefer that USC or ASU was the cause of the loss for Zona and not the ducks so that we have a shot at the Rose Bowl but not the ducks.
I would like to mention that the time when an animal is most dangerous is when it is cornered. It is when the animal is cornered that it gets defensive and has nothing left to lose, they are nasty. WSU has nothing left to lose and at any point could fight back against the whoopins they have received. That is my biggest concern this weekend.
Beavs win anyways, 48-17 (second string D plays a bunch).
You’re a fucking jackass dude. Go find another team to pretend to be a fan of.
Your momma loves your potty mind. Go back to the Autzen sidelines where you belong loser.
Wildeor mang eats your face
I’m bored. I’m watching football, and Duke’s passing game is about all that’s any good out there. Oklahoma and Michigan suck in all facets. Terelle Pryor has probably reached the pinnacle of his career in terms of ability. I haven’t seen so many missed open WR’s since I last watched an SEC game. Duke and UNC both lead to start the fourth against Miami and BC respectively. They’ll both lose. And Minnesota at Iowa? Come on!
On a lighter note… Oklahoma will probably be 6-5 after this game, and that may be enough to move them out of the AP top 10.
And Notre Dame’s trouncing of Connecticut might poise them to play the aforementioned Oklahoma in the title game.
You know… I’ve only watched one Oklahoma bowl game in the lat ten years (statue of what?), but I wouldn’t mind watching a 6-6 Notre Dame play a 6-6 Oklahoma in some powertool.com bowl.
Haha.
Beavers are undisciplined with PI, late hits, and blown coverages. This screams to me that the Beavs aren’t taking the game seriously and are playing to the level of their opponent yet again. Another problem with this sloppy play like this is that it tends to bleed into the next game. Really disappointing to see the Beavers lose focus near the half.
I heard Riley gave ’em what for after the game.
