Home Athletics Now What?

Now What?

245

We got what we wanted but don’t get to see the product for 8 months.

What should we do in the meantime?

I can’t believe I am saying this, but I am completely satiated with no complaints. There’s not much to criticize, unless you guys want to go after the media, but I think perception is changing with each hire, so I’m not sure we have to do that. It’s happening of it’s own accord.

Maybe we should all migrate to zerohedge for a few months and complain about the government? I hate to waste all this potential rage.

    • It hasn’t? I really don’t care who Michigan or anyone else hires. Unless GA might leave OSU before coaching a game, I am not interested. I guess as noted below we get to see how well these guys recruit, though we probably won’t know that until this time next year since they’ll be late to the party on a lot of guys.

I expect a big uptick in recruiting next year if not sooner.

  1. Wellll for one thing we’ve got this class to monitor. Can the coaches recruit to Corvallis or can’t they?

Do we cut them some slack for this class?

  2. We could always be a think box for the marketing department. I know they’ve taken one of my ideas before and run with it. I think the on field action is going to improve soon, but we could really use some improvement in the game day experience. It’s not all bad currently, but there is definitely room for improvement. A trip to Reser needs to be an experience that will draw in the fans, especially those with families.(to build future Beaver fans)

    • We need the RVs back in the main lot. Tailgating ain’t a culture if they’re all in the boondocks.

A friend of mine actually came up with a decent idea (to me). Take Truax and the two fields and make them a beer garden/vendor type of place with tables and places for families to picnic… for a moderate price (5$ and free for kids, etc.). With the Valley reno, add a big screen facing the practice fields and let the party watch a closed circuit feed of the game. He thinks people can move freely from the stadium to the beer garden and back again instead of going out and back to cars.

I thought this was an interesting idea.

          • it’s quite popular; actually, almost too much so. There are a LOT of people hanging out on the practice field well into the 3rd quarter

          • how about this added twist, Jack: a bridge from the new Valley football center that ramps down into Prothro, that crosses over that street (Ralph Miller Drive?). Only people with stadium tickets could get in; it would be a nice perk.

      • UW is fried.

This Mitchell kid sank everything in crunch time until he had a wide open look with about 1:50 left. Then Purifoy, who has missed everything all game long, ties it up with about a minute left.

UW just falls apart down the stretch. They have zero perimeter D.

UCLA looked horrible against Bama earlier too. Just not a good day for Pac hoops.

  3. OT: Closing out our earlier discussion on WBB, Sportscaster on KATU just mentioned that the LadyVols have more Oregonians on roster than the LadyBeavs. Surprised me.

  4. Or change site name (at least temporarily) to celebrate/better reflect new paradigm: hopefulbeavs, blissfulbeavs, beavs@peace, beavs-all-aglow, badassbeavs…

  5. Why no thread for the women’s game today?

They played #8 Tennessee and 3 referees today. My cousin said it before the game, “the SEC won’t let the Pac-12 win”. So true. How can you win 5 against 8? Free throws won the game, or a better way of saying it is lack of free throws lost the game. Attempts 9 to 34!

    Ouch

  6. Yo y’all did new staff best be finding a way to get it in. Best be turnt up on dem 4 an 5 star recruits!! Dis dat program ware we doin it big son!!! !!

And sorry fo all y’all dat had Bankers back. He out now so it ez to look at wut we got coming in. Dem changes bout to get real.

Fo wonse we bout it bout it y’all!!!!

  7. I’ve been wondering throughout all these assistant hires… why did Andersen keep Brennan? I know he is a good coach… Did he ever express wanting to stay at Oregon State? Or maybe he just hit it off with Andersen… Why wasn’t Brasfield kept? (I know Garrett, Perry were very unlikely to stay)

    • I get the impression that GA is pretty impressed with the wide receiver core. It is some big talent that could go crazy in a more basic system. I think he wants to keep the relationship with Brennan intact.

    • Brennan is also a coach that’s really tight with the players. That’s something Andersen has stressed from the get go. He has coached and recruited well. It’s good to have someone from the previous staff just for some continuity.

      • Along with Mike Parker, I got a kick out of a recent Brennan tweet, “So many makable catches become drops because players go for the one handed sportscenter grab. Just make the darn play!”

Parker has been pissed about one handed catches for a while, I think justifiably so.

    • The Brennans wanted to stay in Corvallis, period. He did have to interview with GA though, and was offered the job. Seems impressed with the direction of the GA vision.

  8. Angry: Code idea for the site. Is there any way to grab the current number of people in the chat room and display it on the main page next to the Chat link? I never think to look in there because it’s always been empty when I’ve looked in the past, but I saw up above that people were using it for the Lady Beavs game today.

    • Am I out to lunch to think the Beavs have a chance to be very competitive in league play? It seems like the league is fast becoming Arizona and then everyone else for the most part. Don’t see why they can’t pull off a few upsets. Quinnipiac loss is not looking so bad.

  9. I won’t post the link, but Gina on OL posted the coaching announcements Anderson has made and compared that to Riley…

Needless to say, riley is taking more time than Anderson and he had a weeks head start to get his staff search underway. Anderson took 2 weeks to make a decision on the staff while Riley takes a month! Looks like Riley’s slowing down all together and possibly was wanting to retire in lincoln anyway…I’m wanting to do that later in life…you can buy a house that would cost $350k in oregon while it costs about $150k in nebraska…cost of living is way cheaper in the Midwest.

    • You think he wanted to retire in Lincoln? He had never even been there. Riley isn’t the brightest, but I don’t think he is dumb enough to retire somewhere he never even visited.

          • Riley and Brown are twins in a way. Both are nice guys in the mold of CEO rather than hands on coaches with a finger on the pulse. After Brown, Texas was not looking for a PR guy nor a figurehead leader. They did not really want another permissive daddy with blind spots. Texas wanted a guy with dirt under the fingernails and a guy that would wade in to excavate and remove the culture of privilege. It remains to be seen if Strong will succeed.

    • Riley is worth millions. Cost of a home is not a factor. And who the hell would want to retire in Nebraska when you are not from there and have no ties? His move was based upon the decline of the football team and nothing less.

  10. Can’t wait to see the salaries of the assistants. How much larger is the pool, or are they just redistributing Read crazy high salary.

    • It’s not like Read’s entire salary is available for redistribution, a big chunk will go to now having a OC AND a QB coach rather than combining those positions into one job ala Garrett.

BTW, I saw that Read got bumped from around $315K at OSU to over $500K at Nebraska.

      • $500k for Read? I just read the special teams summary for the season in the large Oregon newspaper and they got a C grade. See what you can earn with average grades, kids?

        • If they are smart they will save the pay increases Riley is getting them because in about three years they will all be kicked to the curb and if they can get jobs, it’s going to be at a lot less.

  11. Sounds like Utah has their own “Angry”

Utah Pig Bus ?@UtahPigBus 23m23 minutes ago
Do me a favor Ute Nation hashtag #TurnOff1280, they’ve purposefully and irresponsibly damaged Utah with conjecture for ratings. Pay it back.

    • Nope. GA certainly has the talk and I’m going to assume the walk. I think our current players are going to be in for a good surprise. They’ll be better prepared and tougher, something we haven’t seen in a ling time.

  12. I did some maintenance on the forums and pruned all users with 0 posts. If you would like an account re-register and make a post so you’re at 1, otherwise you will be pruned next cycle.

  13. 3* Utah RB commit Taylor Thomas visiting OSU in January.

    Taylor Thomas ™ @Grind_Shine2 · 12m 12 minutes ago
Taking my official to Oregon state on the 16

  14. Anybody else see the aTm coach hit multiple players from WVU? First one he threw a shoulder/elbow into as the player came out of bounds on a play. the player shoved him back and the coach looked to the refs as if he had a reason to be upset. Then later, another WVU player came out of bounds and the coach punched him in the back of the head. WTF? wonder what got under that guys skin?

    • yesterday he said something along the lines of being an “oregon guy” (meaning state of oregon rather than utah)

I sent him a message saying we need more O-line depth at OSU, which he retweeted, so sounding like he’s interested. I hadn’t heard that he skipped out on the bowl game. Is he injured currently or just not playing as a true freshman?

Brayden Kearsley ?@55BYU 22h22 hours ago
Just an Oregon type person man.. Don’t wanna leave. One more week with the real fam

      BeavBlazer
      ?@BeavBlazer
      @55BYU OSU could use some O-line depth…

  15. Kearsley has some academic work to make-up before Bronco will sign a release for him.

My personal opinion of Kearsley is that he’s a prima donna and not worth the trouble to have on the team. He is the definition of “ALL ABOUT ME”

If OSU does accept him as a transfer, TJ Woods better get used to lots of phone calls from Kearsley’s dad, if BK isn’t playing or being shown enough appreciation.

  16. “As the athletics director, it is my job to meet with our head coaches to address aspects of their programs that can be improved. Coach Whittingham and I met twice in person this week for this reason. I want to reassure our fans and recruits that Kyle Whittingham is our head coach and any rumors to the contrary have no validity. As for Kalani Sitake, I am sorry we could not retain him as our defensive coordinator. Prior to the bowl game I offered him a three-year contract worth $750,000 a year plus bonuses that brought it to $800,000. Thank you for your interest and passion for Utah football. Sincerely, Chris Hill.”

      • In one of the radio interviews I linked the other, Andersen said something along the lines of “Oregon State gave me the go ahead to pay what I needed to pay to get the guy I wanted”
I’m assuming OSU has given him a pretty liberal budget to work with which is probably part of the allure for GA to come here. It’s been mentioned that Wisconsin was tight with their money for assistants. Gotta think some of that donor money that was being gathered to pay off Riley’s bad contract helped make this possible. It can’t be said enough…..Thank you Nebraska!

  17. Since when did Utah start calling itself “The U”??

Feels weird.. Like someone else calling them selves Puff Daddy or Diddy meh… Whatever he’s going by now

  18. Previous Coaches Pay: (Sitake almost gettin paid more than Banker and Garrett combined?)

    Mark Banker, defensive coordinator: $505,008
    John Garrett, offensive coordinator: $320,004
Bruce Read, special teams coordinator: $315,000
Mike Cavanaugh, offensive line coach: $275,004
    Rod Perry, secondary coach: $231,756
Joe Seumalo, defensive line coach: $185,400
Chris Brasfield, running backs coach: $180,264
Brent Brennan, wide receivers coach: $180,264
    Trent Bray, linebackers coach: $154,500

    • No, he has a twenty one year old spin doctor working for him on media and Internet espionage. I will bet my house that his Twitter claim about the Sitake offer is a laundered lie.

  19. Maybe the playoff selection committee got it right by shutting out the Big 12. West Vagina (WVA BEAT Baylor) loses to aTm earlier and Chokelahoma is now having their corpse being raped by Clemson, 40-0 after 3. If Texass shits the bed tonight against Arkansas, well I think they probably got it right then.

  20. Couple random thoughts:
    1) Is Eggers gonna become irrelevant to Beavs sports now that his connection to Riley is of no value?
    2) USA Today writes about the obvious and questions the tax deductible swoosh promotion involved in uncle phil’s contributions.
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/pac12/2014/12/29/oregon-nike-phil-knight-college-football-playoff/21013009/

Bonus: Will Andersen shock the culture by: a) closing some/all practices, b) severely limiting access to players for interviews, c) pushing to break the swosh connection in favor of UnderArmor or Addidas?

    • Eggers seems to be on better terms with the athletic department than some other outlets. I think he’ll do okay.

Andersen said there will be some open practice, some closed practice.

    • I don’t know that Eggers will become irrelevant, but I was thinking today I could use a detailed update from him about the assistant hires and nothing so far.

BTW, his book on the Civil War is great….almost 400 pages. It was a nice Christmas gift.

  21. I don’t know the official stats, but I think the Texas QB is responsible for more Arkansas yardage than Texas yardage

Big 12 is 0-3 in bowls this season. I want to see them completely bagel it!

    • here’s my take and an angle that maybe no one has realized or brought up. Riley had his good ol boys club coaching staff here. Maybe GA sees that he can do the same thing in a safe environment where he only has to win say 7-10 games per season and it’s deemed successful. I mean the Pac-12 north other than the ducks is not a juggernaut and doing that is possible. Not saying that as a good or bad thing but he is surrounding himself with his buddies it seems. However he’s been given more resources to do so than Riley was.

      • That was my worry too, but at the same time, I’ll take a new good ol boys club for a few years over the old good ol boys club, just for the fact that it’s at least something different. I was just so tired of the same, stale old product. Even if GA’s group ends up doing the same, repetitive stuff, at least it will take a few years before I actually get bored with it. I just want to be entertained.

Add to that the sense of direction GA seems to have, and now I’m not worried at all. I’ll sit back and enjoy the ride for a few years.

    • and lastly I’ll say this. If coach Andersen and staff can get us to a bowl game in year one, that’s a success in my book. Maybe I’m keeping my expectations low. Gonna be replacing a lot of starters on D and breaking a new qb and new systems on both sides of the ball. If they can go bowling in year one, I’d call it a success. I can’t wait for spring ball to see what these coaches can do with our players.

  22. Andersen to Utah?!?????? Sounds done.

Time to hit reset on the coaching search? Lol!

So, was there ever technically an Andersen era?

  23. Anyone have links to the media articles/tweets stating we should be content with Riley because it’s the best we can do? I’m looking and I can’t find them.

    • Brother wouldn’t believe me. Thought Scott Frost was coming LOL. It’s going to be fun tormenting him until Simple Jack gets run out of town.

          • Seems like every comment is “I love the hire, he’s an NFL guy so he must be good”

I do think Riley/Dorf will find some success in their new conference where they wont need to score 45 pts to win a game, but how long will it take for the team to learn Riley’s difficult system? First 2 years could be ugly

          • Let them celebrate setting all the passing records in the history of everything… and their RBs who gain five yards a carry… on a 40/12 pass/run ratio.

Then let’s see them scratch their heads and wonder why they’re only 7-5 and headed for the Sun Bowl or wherever every year.

Then I can empathize with them. Right now… they’re just fun to watch with all their little bubbles waiting to be burst. But it’s not my job to burst them. They pay good money to the highest paid employee in the State of Nebraska for that.

          • From what I could tell at least they’re smart enough not to bad mouth GA…..they are taking their Wisconsin beat down like good little Cornhuskers. I would love it if BDC could convince St.Riley to play the Beavs in a home and home in about three years, but it’s questionable whether Riley will still be in Lincoln.

          • Angry, before the Nebraska game next season I will need a list of Riley-isms to spew out to my brother and other Husker fans in our tailgating lot.
Do you have that “thinker” picture of him? I would like to print some out for that game.

Michigan gets Harbough, Nebraska gets Riley. What does that tell you?

          • It’s funny to read how dismissive they are of your comments. It’s not like you came in there and fired off some quick “Riley Sucks!” comment. you laid out examples and explained you were coming from the perspective of a fan who has watched every game closely, yet they all disregard what you have to say. Like Jack said, it will be fun to watch them discover things on their own.

          • Yeah it’s just like OSU fans who loved Riley, though. I think my comment about how it’s easier for a guy to say girls suck rather than admit he’s ugly or has a bad personality sums up the mindset of the average guy and ncaa message boards. Path of least resistance and least unpleasantness happens to be a path full of denial. It’s easier to say Riley is good once you’re stuck with him. Beaver fans did this. Now that he’s gone they’re all saying he wasn’t good. Have you noticed this? It’s human psychology. It’s fascinating.

By the way, they are using Eli Mannings good season as proof Langsdorf is good. Has anyone watched Odel Beckham Jr? That guy made Eli this season…making many many acrobatic catches and breaking short passes that had no reason going the distance. They just see stats, which tell half a picture.

          • There was one Husker comment on that forum complimenting Eli because he had “thrown a lot of passes”. Huh? I kind of think all of the “offense talk” by them is a smokescreen. Defense was a big part of the Nebraska tradition when they were elite……..Banker is not going to return them to Black Shirt level and they know it.

        • A good thread might be over under on Riley in nebraska. I say under 3 years. I think in the middle of the 2nd year we hear rumors he’ll be canned at the end of the season.

          • I think 3 years is a stretch. If Husker fans are paying any attention to clock management, play calling, and sideline demeanor they will be shaking their heads sooner rather than later. Short honeymoon, maybe even less than 7-8 games next season before the rumors start..

Special teams was a mixed bag in their bowl game, ain’t gonna change much with the half million dollar man coordinating next go ’round.

      • I think the general trend of the past few years has been that BDC has been unwilling to pay ‘those’ coordinators ‘competitive’ salaries. I think that is what was discussed in the season ending meeting. And Riley took another job 2 days later.

        • They certainly didn’t earn it. I don’t know why anyone would get upset about it. And if anyone thinks they did earn their salaries, let alone “competitive” salaries, go find the rankings of their units among NCAA D1 football and then find me the coordinator salaries for those who are “competitive” with our coordinators at the time.

          • Did Sitake earn his $500k for going 5-7 each of the past two years? His defense also gave up 51 points at home in 2013 to OSU. Just sayin…

          • Yeah, I think of that too…I thought Aranda had a better track record but also had the 59 point debacle to end the year. I think we’re still going to see high scoring games, its the nature of college football these days. Hopefully, we’ll see schemes that allow players to play faster (and younger) and improved tackling.

I expect we’ll start seeing improved DLine talent and depth.

          • His defenses were still better than Banker’s were, by far (except for ppg in 2012, it think). I suspect the overall record might not have been the result of a nationally top 20 D. Yeah… that Utah offense who played Banker’s D for 48 in the same game you claim OSU scored 51 on Utah’s D? I suppose that offense (and ST unit) didn’t have anything to do with the Beavs getting short fields and/or outright scores?

So if Banker “earned” his 500K, then Sitake “earned” about half-again as much based on the statistics his units put up over the same time frame.

    • NU has effectively thrown away 3 years of Husker football. The complexity, vagueness, poor communication, and overall mediocrity won’t be tolerated for long, and they’ll blow it all up and start over….

But hey! Riley’s nicer than Pellini…

          • I was surprised by how much Pelini’s players loved him….the empty bus seat, his name all over the place on their uniforms.. He was obviously an ass on the sideline and to the media at times, but he must have done right by the kids,. I wonder how long it will take Riley to suck the passion out of Pelini’s recruits. There is also history here, Riley did the same thing to Erickson’s players.

  24. Wazzu has dismissed their leading tackler, safety Daquawn Brown. Apparently, Daquawn did not like being locked in a storage room and called an empty zombie.

  25. If I was the AD at Nebraska, about right now I’d do a mulligan: First fire Riley and all the assistants he’s hired. Then go back to Corvallis and poach GA and the staff he’s assembled.

  26. Huskers play BYU in their home opener. A healthy Taysom Hill is one of the best running QB’s in the nation. I would expect the Huskers to win on overall talent alone, but Biley is going to be tested out of the gate. BYU has pulled some upsets over the years. Go Bronco!

      • Be careful with that one. You don’t know which BYU players will be suspended for that game, as well as who their coach will be. Sounds like alot of people around that program are tired of Bronco and would like to see him move on.

        • Its a long ways away but I will likely go in on that one.. The lines the first week of college football are always easy pickings.. I’m thinking until odds makers can see the Nebraska product they will buy into the agenda a lot of the MSM is pushing. Riley with larger rooms with crown molding and bigger checks is going to somehow morph into a master mind…

We lost to Eastern Washington at home with 5 guys (counting Seumalo) who will be playing on Sundays on the field. Unless Riley decides to change his fall camp setup after 20 plus years I see BYU either pulling the upset in that one or at least covering the spread regardless of who is playing or coaching for them.

Many here suspect Riley was hesitant to go full throttle in fall camp due to the lack of depth ( he created by poor recruiting) but I think its more a product of his general apathy and lack of urgency. Maybe that changes with new demands and pressures but I doubt it until it proves itself out.

  27. Riley brings his whole staff with him to Nebraska and now gets to coach against Dantonio, Meyer, and Harbaugh. Nebraska fans that are ex

    • Harbaugh A+
      Narduzzi A
      Hermann A
      Morris A
      Chryst B+
      Andersen B
      Riley C+

      Oregon State Beavers
New coach: Gary Andersen (former Wisconsin head coach)
      Grade: B
Well, this one just fell in AD Bob De Carolis’ lap. He wasn’t expecting to lose Mike Riley, and he wasn’t expecting Andersen to be available. Tensions between Andersen and Wisconsin’s administration were rising, and Andersen hit the eject button. Presented with the opportunity to get a sitting Power 5 coach, it was a no-brainer for De Carolis. Andersen felt like a philosophical fit at Wisconsin in a number of ways, but he never seemed to attach himself geographically. The Utah native seems to be best suited being back on the West Coast. Living in Oregon’s shadow and competing in a tremendously difficult league, Oregon State is a really tough job. But Andersen thrives with that underdog sort of mentality, the one that worked well at Utah State.

      • Ok, who is Morris? And while I get the DC from Michigan St and the OC from Ohio St are big hires I don’t see how they rank better than the Head Coach from Wisconsin.

          • Ok, so I think poaching a power 5 HC who was in no way on the ‘hot seat’ is bigger than promoting a coordinator. Feels like the OSU hire is getting marginalized in that write up.

          • Yeah. This list tells me had Narduzzi or Hermann been hired at OSU, they still wouldn’t have given our hire better than a B grade. They gave Riley a C+ because they have real doubts he will win at the high level expected, but since he is a ‘nice guy’ they don’t want to score OSU’s new coach too far ahead or else something wouldn’t fit with the narrative Riley is a decent coach. I’d give our hire an A-. They have to quickly start bringing in some nice recruits and be sure to have a real Orange vs Black Spring Game to earn an A.

      • While I think hiring Harbaugh is a good get for Michigan, I can’t imagine he’s there for the long haul. To go to another NFL team, he would have had to sign a contract with a bad team. With Michigan, I’ve read he has no buyout, so essentially he’s become a high paid coach who can leave whenever he wants to with no penalty. I guess that’s good for Harbaugh, but seems like recruits would be worried about him bolting after 1 or 2 years.

        • An arrogant dick is a perfect fit for their alumni base. That being said, I loved the offense he ran at the farm. Having Andrew Luck didn’t hurt either.
