Let’s hear predictions for the Beavs in the CWS.
Since they’re #1 overall and having a historic season, the Beavs will have a target on their back every inning this post-season. When you’re a marked man like that, even teams like Yale and Holy Cross become dangerous in a short series. I’m not saying those teams will beat the Beavs, but the Beavs will be under constant attack from everybody, and added with the nerves of the post-season, it could be a recipe for an early exit. I see Vanderbilt as an early threat. Maybe Stanford in the super regional…but since they’re marked any team can get them. Very curious to see how Jake Thompson does…
Also, on the Petras signing. I like it. His WRs are wide open in the film, so it’s hard to gauge much, but he moves okay and has a nice delivery.
Go off topic, etc.
They wouldn’t face Stanford until the CWS.
I agree about the postseason nerves but everyone will have those. As far as the target is concerned, they’ve been under that fire all season. They will weather the storm and make it to the CWS!
KJ’s and Kwan’s injuries are the wildcards.
You have to be lucky to advance. We have had the luck running our way this year. Can it continue?
2014 proved anything can happen. Team is confident and on a mission. Who knows, but why not.
Prediction, I will be tailgating in Omaha. Stop by for beer. Go Beavs!
I have seen enough grit from this team to believe that any extra nerves or jitters will be handled masterfully. It appears that PC has this team focused with a single-minded determination. This regional will display their dominance, albeit against inferior competition.
When the 2014 squad earned the No. 1 overall seed, I didn’t really buy it. I can find few chinks in this team’s armor.
Need to extend AB’s, and get to their middle relief/BP early, then it’s game over.
A couple good pieces in the GT, one spotlights the academic accomplishments of the baseball team, NOTE: several psychology majors there.
The other one has a focus on Max E. and Jake Thompson, “the only current players with home postseason experience”.
Jake doesn’t believe the No. 1 national seed comes with added pressure, he says, “I feel like as a team, we should walk around like we’re the No. 1 team, like we want to be the last ones standing in Omaha,” he said. “We need to have that attitude, carry it with us and go out and play like we’re the No. 1 team.”

#1 Seed has a curse associated with it, and statistically hasn’t done well. 1999 was the last time a #1 won it all. There will be close games, there always is. Beavs have grinded through a lot of close games and came out ahead in all but one. Jake Thompson didn’t pitch well at all in his last outing against the worst team Beavs have faced all year. I’m a pessimist — Beavs fall in Supers 2-1.
The team has shown little to be considered a “paper tiger” team.
I think most fans think the team could become a juggernaut if the offense clicked more. The committee gave the Beavs the right teams this time. Each would need a few miracles to beat the Beavs at home twice.
The Supers will be tough with the offenses that are in the Clemson regional. But if the team makes it to Omaha, the park is well suited for the Beavs pitching.
Thompson delivered all year on the mound, and now he’s 1st team all-academic. But according to the genius who authors this blog he’s serviceable and a mental midget.
Mental midget? Pull up the quote where I say that or anything like that.
He’s mentally weak. He’s serviceable. You seem to have a crush on him.
mentally weak is “like that”
No crush on him. Last I looked he’s leading the nation in wins. And I talk about him about half as much as you ramble on about your dream QB Mc3rdstring
Mental midget = stupid.
Mentally weak = lack of confidence.
Two entirely different things, which is why you should stay out of nuanced conversation. If you’re not talking about me, you’re talking about Thompson, Casey, or McM. It’s nonstop.
Disagree, depends on context of the conversation.
But before you said all I talked about was Collins and LDR? im assuming you don’t watch beaver baseball because you didn’t know who Steven Kwan was… so watch Jake pitch and then say he lacks confidence.
I’ve watched him pitch many times, unfortunately. I’d like those hours back.
It has nothing to do with variable context other than they are completely different ideas because they are used in completely different contexts altogether. They are in no way interchangeable.
I think Jake’s last outing was because he’s not a Saturday guy. I understand why it was done. Someone might have ended up in our regional who forced us into a Th-Sat schedule. But now we can go back to normal. Hopefully, we don’t even need him for the Supers.
I said “mental midget”, and don’t confuse mental midget, mentally weak or whatever you want to call it, with a lack of intelligence. I don’t believe anyone ever said he was stupid. Great job on achieving success in the classroom but he had his worst outing against the worst competition of the year. I think that shows lack of focus. He relaxed and almost got beat if his teammates didn’t pick him up. I think that is angry’s point, if they relax anyone can beat them. Almost happened last weekend.
I just don’t have confidence in Thompson under any duress because he failed for two years prior to this year. He has to do it more before I buy it. This weekend is a good time to start. He proved himself in the PAC, but I still don’t trust him in any big spot. If someone does, that’s their prerogative.
You said you would trust him if he had success in league play….
And that’s why he’s now serviceable instead of awful…
Look I get thiis angry I don’t like anybody unless I called it years in advance thing is your schtick but it’s really stupid. Mc3rdstring will not lead the nation in anything but you “trust” him more than JT
mental midget=lack of intelligence
mentally weak=weak-minded=poor judgment or focus
If the team plays to the level of their opponents, they will be mentally weak. If they play to their own expectations, they will be fine.
I think there may be an inherent intimidation factor here, too. Not only do these teams know they’re playing a consensus #1 team but the crowd size is a whole different level than they’re use to seeing. But as we know, shit happens and the Beavs could drop a game making this a difficult regional.
Nebraska plays in front of bigger crowds at home.
One good thing about last week’s collapse by Jake is that it showed the team could spot another team 4 runs and still pull it out in the end with the bullpen shutting things down the rest of the way. I might be mistaken, but I believe the 4-0 hole was the biggest comeback by the Beavs all year….correct? I can’t think of any other game where they were down by more and still won.
Mikyle McIntosh, the Illinois State basketball transfer who visited OSU recently, is visiting Oregon today.
OT – Washington Post speculates Texas A&M coach Sumlin on hot seat, Chip Kelly a potential replacement if he can tolerate the schoozing of boosters.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2017/05/31/texas-ams-kevin-sumlin-is-on-the-hot-seat-chip-kelly-is-just-waiting/?utm_term=.d0fce74fbaba
He’d have boosters crawling out of every orifice there. There’s a reason their logo says aTm.
Per Eggers latest article, we’ll only be taking a 2nd QB if Dukart commits. Looks like White has moved on.
Is his name pronounced “duck-art”? That would be something.
Doo-kart?
I suppose the pronunciation of the second syllable could also be pronounced like the name Curt.
Sounds like Petras is much bigger than I had first thought. Kid had a pretty big growth spurt. 6-4 and over 200lbs as a junior is a big kid.
He’s basically Sean Mannion
The article on Petras is really good. Sounds like he has a great attitude and work ethic.
This kid is much much more mobile than Mannion. Similar otherwise though.
My bowel movements are much more mobile than Mannion was.
Just sayin’…
LOL well good for you. Just saying a straight comparison to Mannion other than pigment and height is off base. This dude is going to surprise people when he takes off.He has some burst to him. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t get to a 4th star midway through his senior year. Really nice get by Baldwin , Anderson and company.
Also looks like my Brevin White source needs a talking to.. Not sure where he is going now. Pound for Pound Petras appears to be a more ready QB. While White probably has a higher ceiling.
The only real comparison to Mannion is the height and weight.
This kid won’t have to fix his mechanics, it doesn’t take 5 seconds for the ball to come out. To me he’s a taller Cody Vaz.
The kid QB commits runs hurdles as well.
Oh great, so he’ll be the starter come the Colorado State game?
ESPN has him as a 4* currently. The rest are 3*, for now
He’ll probably become a 4 star on all the sites, then get poached.
Or he hits the camp circuit, other recruits take notice, and becomes a big recruiter ?
At least as a December grad, we’ll find out sooner rather than later
:-)
Casey said either Heimlich or junior right-hander Jake Thompson (12-0, 1.31 ERA) will start Friday’s Corvallis Regional opener against fourth-seeded Holy Cross. Pitching coach Nate Yeskie and Casey were planning to go over the matchups after Wednesday’s practice.
“We are comfortable with either one of them,” Casey said. “By (Thursday) at noon, we will know exactly what we’re going to do the first two games.”
Drew Rasmussen (3-0, 0.51) is not in the mix to start Game 1 but could go Saturday or Sunday.
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-notebook-heimlich-madrigal-are-golden-spikes-semifinalists/article_63ae8086-f4a8-57ef-90de-cb9895c27c15.html
I’d actually be ok with Thompson starting Friday night against a mediocre at best Holy Cross team despite what happened last weekend against another crappy opponent. However, he’d be on a short leash with a similar results. Save Heimlich and Rasmussen for Saturday and Sunday against a tougher opponent.
As for postseason predictions? I predict this team makes it to Omaha. Not saying they’ll win it all though. It takes some lucky bounces and breaks to do so but once you get there, you’ve got a shot. That said, this team DOES have the talent, arms, depth and coaching to bring home another title. And they’re currently on another tear as they were in March. Buckle up for the ride kiddies.
If they make it to Omaha they will be the favorites. TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha is very pitcher friendly. Few HRs are hit there if you can recall the last time the Beavs played there. I think only a couple HRs were hit the entire CWS.
Casey really can’t go wrong with Jake or Luke in game 1. Don’t see much issue there.
You are being generous calling Holy Cross mediocre. They are a team that got hot for 4 games in a weak conference.
Our last CWS trip was during the raised seam era. In 2015 college baseball switched to a flatter seamed baseball that travels farther.
I’d start Luke game 1, get the W, and worry about the rest later on. Just have Jake on a short leash in game 2 or 3. Casey might be getting too cute, here — it sends a sign they don’t respect the opponent if they don’t throw Heimlich game 1, which is never good.
Agreed. Go with what works: Luke on Friday, Drew on Saturday, Jake on Sunday. In the Supers, keep the same rotation.
If we get to Omaha, Luke on Friday, Jake on Sunday, Drew available for long relief or to get to the pen… but rest him a bit, Luke on Friday, Drew on Monday, Jake on Tuesday, the kitchen sink on Wednesday if necessary.
But that’s best case. Luke is the one talking about retaining or increasing endurance. So I imagine he’s just ready to throw. Why take him out of Friday duty? He sets the tone for the weekend.
Precisely.
Even if it works, it’s not a good move.
I think my phone sets time according to nuclear Luke pitching on Friday.
Yup. Stick with your guy that gives you the best chance to win game #1. If it happens to be a comfortable lead after the 6th inning, pull him and have him available for a few inning later in the weekend if needed. Weird shit happens in baseball and if you lose the first game all bets are off.
“Jake Thompson will start Friday against Holy Cross. Luke Heimlich will get the ball Saturday against Nebraska or Yale.”

Might work out, but Casey has set himself up for an ostrich egg sized wart if this backfires.

Speaking of which, my brother moved to Portland…going to go up and see him and catch a game this year. What do you guys think would be the best home game to attend?
I was leaning toward the Stanford game because I love campus around Halloween, but curious to hear thoughts on the best game on the schedule this year.
Also, when do Civil War tickets go on sale? Never been to Autzen, so I wouldn’t mind going to that game even though it’s away.
Looks like UW is the best opponent on the home schedule. Might be interesting to see how a (hopefully) healthy Beavers team does against the Dawgs at home. I’d pick the Dawgs in that one and be looking for how the Beavers fight (fight fight) for four quarters. .
The Stanford Thursday night game would likely be fun with good student participation. OSU could take that one then you have the rest of the weekend with your brother….
UW would be a good one. Nall shouldn’t have any injuries that early in the season and he didn’t play in last year’s game at UW. Could make the game a little bit closer.
Stanford makes sense. A good, but beatable team. Good litmus test for how tough Andersen is making the Beavs.
Rodent Bowl II………the rodents come out at night.
If you guys end up at the rodent bowl, you’ll need to have an AB tailgate.
Would a tailgate be cool to do or awkward?
I can bring a football and sling it, so you bastards better get into shape.
Set it up next to Angie’s “blitzer appreciation’ tailgate. Now that could get awkward.
Haha. Fuck her.
But back to a tailgate, I’d like to carve up angry@angry. I can sling it like 50 yards with pinpoint accuracy.
I just don’t know it would be awkward. Like part of the reason this site runs the way it does is because you guys don’t know me. If we all become friends it could get gay here.
That’s true, anonymity has it’s perks.
Fuck yeah, I’d be in to a tailgate. You dickholes think you hate me on the internet…
I’m afraid I might already know some of you degenerates. I’m not sure I want to confirm that.
I swear on my mothers grave that serial masturbator on campus a few years back wasn’t me
I’m bringing a can of bear pepper spray and if Jack shows up and starts talking politics I’m hosing him the fuck down.
Fight! And there’s plenty of folks that probably would love to see that happen
Angry and Angry@Angry could “whip out their dongs” to see who wins. Angry@Angry could bring his sock puppet collection for show and tell.
That sounds like a Ped State football camp.
It’s only gay if balls touch, er, something like that.
No no no… winking at another guy is gay. Touching balls is how you get pregnant.
It wouldn’t be the first time someone overreacted to words I’ve said and decided to get violent instead of digesting said words. But you can’t talk about politics anymore without just saying our POTUS is just dumbfuckery personified.
I never thought I’d see the day an American President would get bitch slapped by a Frenchie half his age… let alone the complete beating he will continue to take from everyone else now and into the distant future. What a waste of a stuffed suit.
That’s politics as it stands now. Not much else to say except to laugh my ass off at how stupid the man and his sycophants really are. The cynical among them are even funnier than the true believers. They think they can just keep pulling the football away. But they don’t seem to understand that when it comes to doing that, Lucy makes Dipshit Donald look like Garo Yepremian.
The lean and hungry type
Watch out, boy, they’ll gnaw you up.
Fullerton destroying BYU 9-1 in the 5th.
Never seen a more arrogant group of athletes come to Corvallis than Holy Cross. I’ve seen many a team come through town over the years, so that is saying something.
Why is that?
That’s odd. Yeah why on earth are they arrogant? They stink.
Holy Cross is in Worcester, MA. They are basically Boston like cockneys who don’t want to pay Boston cost of living. Campus is an eyesore compared to OSU. Just small stands around their football field. Their sports don’t have much of a following.
Over-compensating…
Holier than thou?
Saw on the twitter that Jake Thompson is getting the start tomorrow night.
Yes, Jake will start Friday night. Off topic. NBA is a joke with its super team the Warriors….
If you drafted Bowie, you didn’t draft Jordan. If you drafted Oden, you didn’t draft Durant.
If you didn’t draft Curry, you were also the fool, some more so than others.
But still, the biggest joke this year so far was Atlanta pulling a Duck in the Super Bowl.
From Jim Wilson, via twitter:
Nebraska: Look good filing off bus, on paper. Best starter, closer are 2-way guys
Yale: Nice looking team
Holy Cross: = Abilene Christian
Tried ordering tickets from Holy Cross, they took my credit card #, said order was complete. 2 hours later got an email saying they couldn’t fill the order, all their tickets had been sold.
Now you are on their donor list. Have fun with that.
Should have bought Yale tickets instead?
I wonder what the junk mail looks like for the people on those lists.
They send them junk bonds instead.
For forty-seven shares, you can save our American Dream.
I once pocketed three quarters off one of those. What moron thought up that idea?
Beavs damn near lost Game #2 to AC last weekend so no one should take Holy Cross lightly.
Game day. Go Beavs!
Watching some of the early games today and noticed that a lot of teams in the south have converted their fields to all turf fields. Interesting since none of the southern PAC 12 schools have turf.
They don’t have increasing drainage issues… unless a main busts on Sunset.
Hearing on the radio that Bill Snyder is under scrutiny for blocking a player from being able to transfer to any of the 35 options the player presented to coach. Instead, he mentioned to the media that this kid has failed two drug tests(not sure why he bothered mentioning that)
Fans and media got on his case, and now he’s given in and grsnted the transfer, but the damage to his character has already been done.
Why is this important? Because if Snyder decides he’s tired of the BS and retires from coaching (or if KSU lets him go), many think oregon DC Jim Leavitt is next in line to tske the KSU job. He even has a special out clause in his contract that says he can take the KSU job without having to pay his buyout.
I like Snyder, but I would live to see him walk away so Leavitt leaves oregon and Silly Willie high and dry.
Isn’t Snyder’s son the “Coach in Waiting”?
He wants him to be.
That’s Snyder’s wish, but the current and previous ADs at KSU don’t share that view. But the more Snyder digs a hole for himself with this bad publicity over the transfer situation, the less likely the school will respect his wishes, in my opinion.
Same dude from Mizzu State that hit a HR earlier hits a 2 out walkoff HR to beat Okie State.
Husksters getting beat by Yale.
