Home Athletics Aric Williams to Replace Keith Heyward?

Aric Williams to Replace Keith Heyward?

78

After doing more research, I think he'd be a good hire.

  • Great personality
  • From LA area
  • Ex-Beaver (this definitely has drawbacks, but he can sell the positives having gone through it)
  • Job would be a step up for him
  • Would be in the Beavers salary range (my one knock on Tony White is they won't be able to pay him)

It would actually be a lot like the hiring of Heyward four years ago. Hate to put a vote into the incestuous, nepotism hat, but all things considered my vote goes to Aric Williams.

  1. I like that Mitch is around also to help out as a GA from a technique perspective. I think Brennan should probably take over California though as our most productive ground.

  2. I agree Angry. If we do go inside the “family” Aric is the best man for the job that I see. I always liked him and think he would do a good job for us. If he does get the job, then after this hire OSU has to start looking outside the family because I think the culture needs new currents working inside it to be healthy. Maybe that can be when Casey takes over for BDC and brings in a few new guys from all over to really get OSU Athletics going. I wonder who our new Associate AD is going to be? OSU Athletics is not doing very good. BDC’s image ideas for OSU and the fact that he doesn’t mind if we win or lose are big parts of the problem. It is basically the same old BDC and Riley show and Ed Ray stays out of it because he isn’t interested in sports.

  3. But can he coach?

Several years ago when OSU hired Ritchie McKay the rumor was OSU had put out the word to the coaches “if you’re not black don’t bother to apply for the job”. Supposedly the feeling was that in order for OSU to be able to recruit BB players they needed a black coach. Hopefully that’s not what is going on in the search for a new DB coach.

Myself, I don’t care if the new guy is white, black, green or purple all I want is someone who can recruit and coach.

The other question is: Is it still OSU’s policy to not have their DBs look back for the ball? It seemed like the DBs were looking back more this year than in years past. Did KH encourage them to look back and if so could that have had an effect on whether or not he got a raise in pay?

    • Several years ago when OSU hired Ritchie McKay the rumor was OSU had put out the word to the coaches “if you’re not black don’t bother to apply for the job”.

We hear that rumor from a small segment of our own fans every time a black person is hired. Do we really think Mitch Barnhart cared about that?

    • I’m against hiring someone who is purple. Means decomposition is taking place. Isn’t that why Riley finally shit canned Newhouse?

  4. No one wants to get on the Richard siegler bandwagon? He was one of the most passionate players in the program. that might translate into recruiting. Plus if the players wants girls, he knows where to find them. Haha jk. Might show some of these youngsters how to play linebacker.

    • Btw, this is a serious suggestion. Siegler fits four of the five traits above. Not being from la isn’t a huge drawback. his personality relating to kids would trump that easily. he has eight younger siblings.

    • That is hilarious. Do you think it will make the Oregon sports news? I’m not going to check it out but for those of you who know this stuff off the top of your head – how many of those coaches are still in place? Not the Hawaii guy – that I do know.

      • Well, Riley went from #10 on the hot seat list to #4 in the final week for the year end standings because 6 coaches on that list were all fired. Yet BDC says the last 2 years .310 winning percentage is merely a hiccup and we are headed in the right direction.

If by right direction he means the 5000 attending last year’s spring game likely to be down to 2500 and no new plans that allow the excitement of OSU Football to expand or get us to top tier bowls.

In all truth, the guy needs to do a press conference where he comes out and says the culture is going to change and winning and excitement about climbing the ladder of success will be made priorities at OSU.

  5. I would love to care about who they hired but right now it doesn’t make a difference as long as Riley, Robinson, and Bobby D control the majority of OSU athletics’ money and use that towards protecting the status quo.

  6. Spent a bit of time playing ball and partying with both Siegler and Williams. Good dudes. Both are funny, charismatic, intelligent, and were hard workers on the field. Both Erickson guys though if I recall correctly. Do anyone know if Riley would actually be interested in them, or are you all just throwing out ideas?

    • I’m only suggesting. I only found out that Richard was coaching at psu yesterday. But he fits the criteria if they are looking for a younger coach who would be a solid recruiter. The big thing against him that I see is that he is very inexperienced. Might not be ready to step up. If he is serious about coaching, this would be a good opportunity to pursue. I was at osu when he was there and I remember he had the “it” factor. Which is why I believe he would make a strong recruiter

  7. Hooker has a lot of offers. Imagine that? Seems like a good get. Is this the same school where our new QB savior is coming from?

Seems like a fit for Nevada, it being legal and all down there.

    • That’s good considering where we were picked by the media and coaches pre-season and considering all the pundits had us at 0-5 and finishing 11-7 before league play began.

Good national press gets back to the players and coaches more than our discussions do. Maybe this spurs more and better changes from the team going forward.

I’m not liking the offense with Moreland standing around in the lane. Can Coach Rob tell him to go stand in the corner for a while to let the lane open up again? He always seemed to be in the way last night. But hey! He can rebound and block shots.

    • Yes, spot on. Too much babble about the great offense from our local media, when the defense has been atrocious. I haven’t looked, but they have to be last in several defensive categories.

    • Thanks for the link. Where do you get the idea that it shows “something of an awakening”?

To me the article is asking for an awakening and forecasting problems if one doesn’t occur.

      • I’m assuming that the pay sites are worse than the beat reporters in that they hang on every word the coaches tell them come hell or high water. Any assumption is dangerous, I know. But to see someone voice this awakening on a format everyone from everywhere can see it due to its network gives me some hope that someone somewhere other than here is trying to fill the cracks in the sidewalk rather than just saying, “Oh, it’s ok. Everything will get better on its own. Remember the days before we even had a sidewalk?”

  8. Frustration. That’s what I feel. We’re slipping farther and farther back competetively. Why would any Beaver leave us for the Huskies for basically the same money? Leaping off the sinking ship? The only thing worse would be if he left us for Oregon. Frustration…

    • Likely A LOT more money… like 50%+ more. And look at the company ladder here and there. We’re top-heavy with entrenched coaches who are going nowhere. Sark has proven that he will move to reward success and remove failure. And he is showing that he will move with speed toward quality. Wilcox will likely be a head coach within a couple years, and KH will be a beneficiary if he stays with Wilcox or with Sark.

Sark is paying gobs of money right now for these assistants. Remember that he is still on the hook for the pay-outs to the assistants he’s already fired.

And we’re stuck here wondering what unproven and/or inexperienced coach who might or might not be good might come to OSU for the pittance we will surely offer.

Apologies if this interview with Heyward has already been posted. Heyward says all the right things and gives Riley a lot of credit (also says it was not about the money). This simply sounds like a guy who was looking for a new challenge after spending a dozen years at OSU (as a player, GA, and coach).

Let’s take our foot off the “blame Riley for Heyward’s departure” pedal. While I think Heyward’s loss is in some ways crippling, and that Riley won’t find a worthy successor and/or be able to pay him what it would take, I can’t blame Riley for Heyward’s defection (at least not with what we know).

I am heartened to hear Heyward say he will absolutely not recruit any of the commits he was recruiting. I imagine this extends to players he was recruiting for OSU that have not yet committed too.

    • Dude, it was about the money/respect. Of course he’s going to say nice things in an exit interview. The guy doesn’t want to burn bridges.

  10. Eggers article says, heyward just needed a change of scenery and a different program to “grow” in as he has been at OS for 12 years. Doesn’t sound like pay was an issue as it was more of a career move.

Riley said he knew of the mutual interest last week, but didn’t know it was a for sure until Tuesday. Eggers goes on to say that Riley has a long list of candidates and will ask Banker for some names too, but that he has some replacements in mind. Also, said the new coach will most likely be Black, and most likely won’t coach DB’s.

So, look to other positional coaches other than the DB’s, maybe the move Seumalo to another position and put Isaac at the DL, mom gets her wish not having Dad coach son #2 ?? Not real serious on that sense I dont’ think Coach Joe could coach anything else. So I would look for a LB coach. I don’t know the likely assistants out there I will leave those up to the more knowledgeable, but that Tony White does he still fit the criteria?

    • White was a LB at UCLA and LB coach was his first positional coaching job at the NCAA level. He also recruits LB’s pretty heavily for SDSU (Aaron Porter and Joel Skotte were two of his projects). I have no doubt he would be an excellent LB coach. And I have less doubt about his recruiting ties on the West Coast and Southwest and especially LA. I believe he’s from Texas originally, and I think he was a high school coach in LA before Rocky dragged him out to UNM… and then to SDSU.

But getting him will come at a price OSU does not pay for positional coaches. He’s getting $150K now. In fact, everyone at SDSU is getting that amount except for the OC. That kinda puts our situation in perspective. In fact, it kinda tells us why Brady Hoke is now at Michigan.

  11. what would people think of Osia Lewis in a second stint at his alma mater?

He recruits Nor Cal, but also Houston? He’s coaching the DL right now, maybe he moves to LB, as Ast DC and maybe successor to Banker?

    • I believe Lewis was the LB coach at UNM that Tony White replaced (Lewis replaced Mendenhall). And of course he coached LB’s here under Pettibone. He’s been around the block as well and likely has plenty of contacts recruiting-wise.

But it’s the same situation as White with the pay. Maybe he would be more open to coming back to OSU, but wasn’t his only contact with Riley the same as Mendenhall’s–getting canned?

  12. To call tomorrow nights game against ASU a must win is an understatement. This team is too talented to start a horrendous 1-5 in league. Coach Robinson needs to take much of the reponsibility for this next one. It is his job to put the players in the best position to achieve success. I feel good Oregon St. does just that and Coach Rob gets Oregon State back notching up conference wins.

    Oregon St. 77, ASU 70

Oregon St. @ Arizona St. Preview:

  13. Found this just happened today:
San Diego State: Former Texas A&M assistant strength coach Joey Boese has been named head strength coach at SDSU. Maybe this makes the SDSU assistant coach more poach-able? I wonder if Katz gets screwed again.

    • That is pretty awesome. This team needs to get past the first day at nationals. They always seem to be a team who could win it all or lose unexpectedly because they didn’t show up for the big stage.

If Nikegon can break through their glass ceiling at the Rose Bowl, then our girls can certainly bust through their brick wall.

    • Yeah, I was following that along twitter last night, they had to come from behind to do it, showing a lot of guts to finish out strong and in fact they had to pull it out in the last two tumbles. Great job by the lady beavs! Maybe the men’s hoops could learn something from them on how to finish?? (sorry about the jab there).

I see they had over 3,200 fans there too, another great crowd support. That program probably makes a profit.

  14. We’re screwed as OSU football as a whole now. We are back to the dark years of old thanks to Riley and company. We missed out on a GREAT opportunity to hire Jonathan Smith, but alas…Who beat us to it?! Boise State of all people!!! Great job Riley!!! Great job!!!(Sarcasm).

I will attend football games, but expect a loss every game until Riley either:

    A) Fires a coordinator
    B) Gets fired/resigns himself
    C) BDC retires and we have a new AD in place
or D) The defensive scheme and playing calling is different in the first 2 home games.

Otherwise, I will expect a loss every game this season. I’m pissed that we lost Heyward, we lost out on JS, and who knows who else we’ll lose out on because of Riley’s ineptitude to see the happenings around the country!!! I’m getting tired of the same old sob story and “Good guys” cause you know…I’m starting to think that good guys do finish last….especially if they are passive and try really hard not to be the bad guy….That’s really what it comes down to…trying not to be the bad guy. That should be BDC’s and Riley’s motto from here on out. “We don’t want to be the bad guys here, so we’ll just keep things the same around here…even if it isn’t working because change isn’t a good way to keep continuity.” I call BS!!! not Boise State Bull S***!!!!

  15. It might be nice to shout praises for the girls in their tutus, but women’s gymnastics doesn’t pay the bills! They suck money away from programs that do make money. Just another way to make sure football continues to be on a downward spiral. Next we will be celebrating crew.

    • Benny sucks!!

I still have a mental image of him forlornly watching from the Gameday crowd as the UO Duck stole the show in CORVALLIS!!.

As usual the Ducks do it bigger and better. The Duck is a beloved, clever, crowd pleasing clown. Benny is unoriginal and annoying. I think he is just some random kid that got stuck with the duty for that particular weekend. The Duck, I’m told, is selected after a vigorous campus wide competition.

Hell will freeze over before we see Benny on an ESPN commercial. JB

      • Maybe not ESPN but he can do ORKIN commercials, that Orkin man is do for replacement. We could get some good PR with Benny in his place. Then the nation would know who the Beavers are!

  16. Confirm or deny who visited this weekend? BeaverBlitz is teasing the hell out of it. Someone didn’t show, someone showed up late, and a surprise visit? Or is this just more flack to get subscriptions?

    • I think the no show was Jonavaughn Williams, a WR not that highly ranked. We probably cancelled his visit because we are going to get a commitment out of Lawler to fill out our slots for WR.
      Can anyone else confirm?

    • Meh… if I had to guess, I have seen Javon Williams’ name show up on lists of visitors for this weekend, and I thought he dropped us a couple weeks ago.

I don’t really care about a surprise visitor until tomorrow… when I will find out for free anyway.

      • Javon and Jonavaughn are two different guys and Javon is the much better WR. I hope he did not stiff us. But if we get Lawler, it doesn’t matter.

        • Jonavaughn Williams, my son, is a 2 way player (WR & DB); was being recruited by OSU as a Safety. He was a no show because the invitation was withdrawn the week of the visit. Yes, we made 2 other official visits but, as a parent we want to see what school offer our son the best opportunity to continue to be groomed as a good citizen, student & an athlete. We were impressed by OSU & Coach Reily. The cacellation of our visit when a comittment was going to be made came as a big suprise.

Business decision; I am not sure, but I wish the program the best in the PAC 12.

  17. Hi BN.. Its me again. Just back from a week long business conference in NYC. At the meeting I had a few interesting sports related conversations.

“You are from Oregon? You must be really proud of those Ducks” When I pointed out that I was an OSU fan it went…. “OH… so how did you do this year?” You can fill-in the rest.

After a few nights of sports related conversations a new friend said something such as “I know how you feel. I’m an Indiana graduate and no one knows that we are a member of the BIG-10.”

So there we are… headed toward being a forgotten national footnote in the PAC-12. Or the answer to a trivia question. Besides the Ducks what is the mascot of the other Oregon school in the PAC-12? JB

    I…… U…… wave arms like a spaz!!!
