General Discussion (Opening Day Baseball, Rod Perry, etc)

104

Baseball, Perry, and hoops seem to be the discussion points, so have at it.

By the way, is anyone else going to opening day in Santa Barbara? Tickets are $7, so if you're in the area might as well go. If we get a few people we can meet up somewhere for a cocktail or whatnot.

  1. This has just become another lost season for Beaver Basketball. That being the case why doesn’t CR start playing Cunningham at point guard? In Gary P’s interview he said that Jarred needs to play PG to make it in the NBA. CR give him a chance! The cynic in me thinks that CR doesn’t want the world to see that Jarred would make an acceptible PG yet so that Jarred will come back for his senior year. That or Starks has some real dirt.

    • i checked in on the live feed from the game at various intervals last night. It didn’t look like it was worth watching, but one thing I noticed, every time I started watching, Burton could be seen fumbling the ball away or falling on the floor in the key. Am I crazy or did he look extra clumsy last night? What gives? Do you think it has anything to do with wearing the same worn out shoes all season? Can’t they get him a new pair of blue sneakers to wear? I thought basketball shoes were really only built to last for 1-2 games at high level play?
Maybe the shoes aren’t too blame though, more likely has to do with what’s between the ears than whats on the feet.

      • Between the ears is more likely. Joe had an awesome stat line at Utah, and he likely thought that would just carry over.

        It didn’t.

Consistency is hard for this team to find.

On shoes: Though Nikes are famous for blowing out within a week of purchase, I don’t think the schools (and pros) who get shoes from apparel contracts get the same shit quality they put on the shelves for the stupids of the world to buy. They know their quality is crap, but it would be poor marketing to have their athletes blow out shoes while on the court.

And hoops shoes are better with age. Once they lose half the gunk on the sole (mostly irrelevant shit they call “engineering”) they finally become flexible and utilitarian.

        • I can say as a former Nike employee that factory samples, special production runs and mass production runs are from the same plans, specs and materials from the same factory. The only difference is samples and special production runs ship by air and mass production by boat.

I enjoy reading your posts on football but the statement about Nike shoes is stupid.

          • Ok… I stand corrected. I just would have thought that Nike would have sent their athletes better than the shit shoes they pawn off on the public. Hell, I would have thought that athletes required a custom fit, and Nike has no medium to wide shoes available. So it’s something of a shock to learn they make zero considerations for their marketing.

Pretty shoes… made by pretty designers… not cobblers.

Now I know why almost every runner in the world wears anything but Nike. Color me wrong for thinking they might give their athletes any consideration.

        • I lived next door to and was friends with a former OSU starting center during my 3 years living in Corvallis, and he would get new game shoes every week. He said the shoes wouldn’t hold up well enough to trust them for multiple games. It just wasn’t safe to wear a single pair of game shoes all season, especially for a 6’11” guy.

Also, pretty sure most NBA players give up on a pair of shoes after 1 or 2 games in them.

    • I don’t know if call this a lost season. We’re almost guaranteed to be playing in the NIT, which is a huge accomplishment considering the lack of success over the last 20 years.

That said, I would also like to see Cunningham play some point.

      • The only tournament that you guys will be playing in is the Knit, which is for old ladies over 70.
You will lose on Sunday, again to Cal and Colorado which will not get you into anything but the CBI.
        Woof!

        • Didn’t Washington just get blasted by a sub par Oregon team the other night? The same team Oregon State beat on the same court a week earlier? I’m not saying Oregon State has a good basketball team, but I’m also not going to say Washington’s team is any good either.

      • The NIT will be a good accomplishment… not great, but certainly better than past performances. The team had higher expectations for themselves, and so did I. They conditioned their expectations on winning the Pac Tourney, so their dream isn’t dead. But our loss to ASU added to previous losses to the two pathetic Washington schools pretty much told me this team just isn’t quite ready. The stars ARE aligning. It’s just the beginning. They haven’t aligned yet.

It’s looking more and more like Cal and Zona will be the only Pac entries in the Dance this year. I always feared the Zonies because they by far have the most talent in the Pac. And now they’re putting it together, and they will likely win the Pac Tourney. Cal gets in on a good record and the Pac regular season championship.

What’s nice is that the next five or so teams will probably get the NIT. That’s a better showing than the Pac has had in several years.

        • Way to set the bar high and reach for the stars. That is why all your teams suck, they have the same expectations as their fans. Who really believes that crap about the team “conditioned their expectations on winning the Pac Tourney,” You can’t serious. You must have majored in BS at OSU, which makes sense with your cow barns on campus.

          • Your name might be Jack, but you don’t know jack about the NIT selection process. The last thing they want is a school who can’t get people to show up for their games. Having 5,000 show up for your game last night is just more reason to not be given consideration. You must be averaging close to the lowest attendance in the league. Take a look at how full our arena is and you will see that you have no chance of getting in the NIT.

        • There are no guarantees in life, but any Pac-10/12 team with a winning record is generally given an invite.

Wazzu two years ago got in with a 17-15 record. Cal got in with a 16-15 record the year before. Etc.

The absolute worst we can do right now is 15-16. In my opinion, we need 2 wins in our final 7 games to guarantee a spot. I think we’ll get in.

  2. What the F is taking this Perry hire so long? Let me guess, he’s trying to convince his wife that Corvallis won’t be THAT bad because it is only for two years.

    • What’s wrong with Corvallis? Is the crime rate too low? Is $200k so little on top of the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) they already have in the bank for them to escape for vacations here and there?

It beats the working retirement I’ve known some people to take. I know of four independent truckers who learned their trade upon retirement and bought their trucks outright. Diverse backgrounds all. And their wives went through trucking school with them. They all travel the country on runs, and they think it’s great.

The pay is shit compared to what it once was. And they struggle to survive just like anyone else in that job nowadays. But I think the struggle is what keeps them alive and kicking.

I think a house next to the country club would be an excellent place for world travelers to land. I’ll bet DE wishes he had the same deal right now.

  3. Anyway, I’m interested to see who Casey trots out for starters. We know Wetzler’s a lock. I think Schultz should get the nod based on past performance. Do we see Boyd thrown in because Fry and Duke are out for now? Bayliss? Does Gonzalez step up as a frosh? Davis’ arm keeps him in the mix as well.

I have a feeling angry is gonna get the best look at all the assembled talent… sans Fry and Duke. The first series should be pretty fun for experimentation.

    • That’s what Eggers says. I love Jake on the corner, and he’s our best 2B IMO. But I also love Smith in the field for whatever wacky reason. And he seems to fit in best at 2B as well.

Susac is going to be the hardest to replace. But remember that we also lost Berberet, who was another comfort food type of player. i don’t think Jake has the size to play C. But he apparently has the skills.

    • Great move IMO. Gotta get his bat in the lineup, and Smith is a better 2B. They can use Gorton late in the game for defense if he’s the better catcher (he’s certainly not a better hitter).

The thing about Smith is you can bat him 9th and rely on clutch hits and great defense. That’s not bad from the 9 hole. I’m all about D up the middle and Smith/Dunn is the combo. DH Keyes, put JR at catcher. Love it.

      • I don’t know about that. Gorton never really practiced hitting before while at OSU – he was a pitcher. What you saw in the games was whatever he still had from high school plus a little messing around during batting practice after all of the other position players hit. For the Corvallis Knights this past off season he hit .301. I’m really interested in seeing what he does with consistent at-bats for the Beavers.

        • .301 is pretty good. I’m not saying Gorton can’t hit, I’m just saying JR looked like a legit masher. I can see JR hitting .320 with 20 doubles, 8hrs, something like that. Not sure if Gorton has that upside.

If he’s improved as a hitter it only increases the team’s versatility. e.g. if Gorton can hit, then JR can play 2B to get more offense in the lineup versus elite pitching; Gorton would have more value spelling at catcher and playing the 2nd half of a double header, etc.

          • Jake’s only going to be at C because Gorton’s out for five games. Gorton has been groomed to take the C, and he has the size to take it.

I trust Jake to call any game. I just think that kid is that good a player. So we just have to see how well Gorton can do at the same task… eventually.

I think Jake is butter at 2B. But I got no toast at SS. I know Dunn pulls that card. But Casey was hesitant all last year to play him.

I have a feeling Gorton will fill in fine for Susac and Berberet. But not getting a SS may cost us in the end.

          • I have a feeling jrod finishes the year at 2B. As far as calling the games goes, at least in February wouldn’t Casey be the one calling the games?

          • Certainly, though I would assume (definitely could be wrong) that a kid with a bat like rodriguez wouldn’t lose too much time behind the plate because he isn’t as strong at directing as gorton

    • Besides… we can hear them fine up here. Right?

It’s like I need to put on a tinfoil hat and promise not to speak to my dead ancestors in order to read what they post.

  4. I am looking forward to baseball, although I was looking forward to basketball and thats let me down. I don’t know too much about who should play where, I trust in Casey for that. I am concerned early on about our pitching. It’s too bad our young guys (Fry and Duke) are not ready, but I am not going to sweet it. If we lose a few and fall out of the rankings I am prepared, because I think if we get healthy we will be a very tough team to beat. I hope the chemistry is there. Maybe it will be a blessing in disguise, we might find that we have more depth this year or we might fade like we did last yer. I went to the Seattle series last season and they were “grinding” super hard Osich wasn’t really the same after the no-no and the bullpen was gased, it didn’t help that defense starting to slip as well. But I was really proud of how they gutted it out to the Super’s. So maybe having some of these kids take the time off now will make them fresher towards the end?

  5. Utes almost got one against Zona in Tucson today. Damn, I’m not going to pencil Utah as a guaranteed win in Corvallis now. I really wish the Beavs would play to their potential. The league was there for the taking this year! Head cold, whiskey and Rugby sevens on NBC until the Beavs game tomorrow.

      • I doubt that’s true, as there’s nothing to indicate that they’ll be grandfathered into anything. The NCAA is it’s own universe and they can and will do whatever pleases them. Sending a strong message to an upstart cheater like the U of Nike, and to all other would be cheaters, would be something the NCAA will be very interested in doing.

The only thing that saves U of Nike from the ban-hammer is if the NCAA releases their findings before these stiffer regulations take place.

The longer the NCAA takes to release it’s allegations, the worse things get for the U of Nike.

          • That’s ridiculous. It’s precisely the splash a prosecutor would want. You make it sound like cheaters should be given some consideration.

Let’s go silly. Let’s say that terrorists who were caught before 9/11 shouldn’t have been re-questioned or re-scrutinized after that day. After all… that would be simple-minded.

          • Different situation, you are talking about investigating, which absolutely the hypothetical terrorists should be reinvestigated. This proposed change by the NCAA is only in sentencing. While I would love for Oregon to get hammered, I don’t think they will get hit with these rules because they are sentences created after a rule was broken.

Also, you think the schools will vote for these changes? They voted down the stipend…

          • Fair enough in theory.

But i still think it would be silly to grandfather penalties according to when an alleged violation occurred. Investigations which occur two years from now can still fall under the “grandfathered” category if violations which occurred last year come to light next year.

See how this turns silly pretty quickly?

          • I think difference might lie in, when the infractions occurred, not when they were discovered. I agree that these are penalties that should be punished harshly and I would love the book to be thrown at them. That said, I think that the appearance of impropriety here would be too significant for it to happen that way.

  6. Beaver women sweep in Washington. Scott will be back in Corvallis tomorrow by game time. I suppose there is no way in hell CR lets Scott sit next to him on the bench and lets Scott teach him the finer points of coaching and game management. Even better, let Scott coach with CR at his side and let us see what coaching knowledge Craig might absorb!!!

  7. Congrats to the women’s basketball team for sweeping the Washington schools on the road this weekend. They are 3rd place in the conference, which is amazing considering the train under LaVonda Wagner is only a few short years ago. Scott Rueck has done an amazing job in a very short period of time.

  8. Word on the street is certain representatives of the ‘ucks are working the phones trying to gather a quorum in order to have OSU removed from the Pac-12 and replaced by a school as yet unnamed but rumored to be Boise State.

That’s the word for what it’s worth.

      • Apparently Nike is working on a “rethink” of the Beavers’ football uniforms this weekend.

        The color green was mentioned.

Why not? The ‘ucks are now using black.

    • Hahahahahahahaha!

Duck High wants the lead institution of higher learning in the State of Oregon removed from the Pac 12?

That’s not even a weak pretense for a bad joke.

      That’s Nikegon logic.

      • Let’s remember that we’re talking about an institution who sued the State of Oregon in the late 80’s because OSU won a grant based on one criterion… they turned in the grant request before the deadline.

That’s right. Nikegon failed to meet a deadline, and they decided to sue the state when they didn’t get what they wanted.

Now let’s talk about the joke a nikegon degree actually is.

    • My understanding is that Boise State doesn’t qualify academically for the PAC-12 otherwise they would have been the prime target instead of CU/Utah. So your source is full of shit.

    • How does that benefit them? Having us on their football schedule is like having another D2 team to work over. Except that beating us counts in the conference standings. I don’t think that removing OSU from the conference helps them in any way.

  9. “I haven’t left my house in days. I watch the news channels incessantly.

    All the news stories are about the election;

All the commercials are for Viagra and Cialis and the candidates.

Election, erection – – erection, election – – either way it’s all about getting screwed!”

    Bette Midler

      • Me too. In fact I’m in the process of collecting data which, if the trend continues, shows that having sex reduces a person’s blood pressure. My wife’s not too sure about my contention that in order for this to be effective the implications are a sex act will have to be performed at least twice daily. I suspect she’ll be suggesting that self gratification will work just as well. I’m thinking there’s trouble on the horizon.

  10. Sunday game plan. As we continue to play our way into the CBI I’m going to spare myself the frustration of watching this afternoon. Wife suggested and I agreed; ” Let’s go to a late brunch and catch a matinee. We’ll DVR the game.” When we get home, late this afternoon, she will check the score on-line and give me a thumbs up or thumbs down. Thumbs down equals delete and move on. JB

PS: Still no word on Perry? Unbelievable…we’ve got nothing but time.

  11. Huge game for OSU Hoops at 2:30 today. We have to beat Washington if we want realistic odds to make the NIT. There needs to be a bit shorter leash on Starks and more effort to find Collier and Brandt on the blocks. Jared has a great opportunity to separate himself from Wroten and take the lead in the Pac-12 POY race. Need a win today!

    Oregon State vs. Washington:

      • The ability of CR and his staff to coach the big guys is becoming more evident every day. In my opinion the play of the big guys is getting worse instead of better bwdik.

      • I almost didn’t mention him. Threw him in at the last second figuring I am hoping for a good all around team effort and because I was talking about doing more down low with Collier already. I hope Nelson takes a couple more shots today. Maybe Starks could drive and dish out to him a couple times. Cunningham needs to keep driving and drawing fouls.
