Home Baseball Stanford @ Oregon State

Stanford @ Oregon State

182

The weekend schedule is as follow. All times Pacific.

  • Friday 5:05
  • Saturday 1:35
  • Sunday 1:05

The interesting notes will be to see how Andrew Moore bounces back and then how the Beavs do versus Stanford’s inexperienced (all freshmen) staff. Also worth talking about this point is Michael Conforto with only 1 HR. He is batting .396 with a .545 OBP and .552 SLG, so that more than makes up for it, but it’s odd to see him with just 1.

Streaming video but no TV this weekend.

Go Beavs!

  1. Keyes at 3b on the early lineup, with Casper at first. I like Keyes but it always makes me nervous to see him at 3b.
Hope to see the Beavs get off to a good start tonight, jump on the furd pitcher in the first couple innings.

  2. Complete game for Ben, 117 pitches, season high PC. 4-1 Beavs.

Earlier Parker said Fry would get the start tomorrow.

EDIT: Postgame Parker said Moore would start tomorrow, could I have misunderstood earlier……yup.

  3. Great game tonight, except the home plate umpire was horrible. 1st inning Pat came out of the dugout, angry as I’ve ever seen him. The ump was ready to toss him. Guy was a tool, tried to ruin the game.

Hope the weather holds, it was beautiful at Goss tonight.

  4. OT… I’m going to link this because I think it’s the most likely site to not have as many cookies as the URLs I saw for all the other links to this “story.” I will not read it because I know what it says without reading it. It’s more predictable than that, but you would have to be a part of another forum to know how easy it is.
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/04/03/oregon-state-university-pays-100g-to-settle-suit-over-trashed-conservative/

This is very funny for several reasons.

    1. “Conservatives” will never make this a national siren song. This is obviously a grift for settlement money. If it wasn’t, there would be no settlement… for paltry coin.

    2. If it had gone to court, the “paper” would have lost big time… unless the courts would have decided that free speech means you can shit wherever you want whenever you want. So I guess they wouldn’t lose based on what SCOTUS thinks.

-Remember “conservatives,” SCOTUS is all you. You don’t like blighted eminent domain? Fuck you. You wanted it. STFU! You wanted big money to own elections, and you got it. You win for now I guess.

    3. I can’t believe this thing was once a student paper. It was a student paper about two years before the incident that took place initiating the bullshit lawsuit. But, as any of us who took part in official student groups know, there are rules for being a student group of any kind.

This reminds me of the lawsuit Nikegon brought against OSU and the state because Nikegon couldn’t be bothered to get the grant bid written and sent until three days after the deadline for the bid. This was 20 years ago, but current shit smells ducky too.

This is the equivalent of me going into a grocery and throwing grapes on the floor… only to slip on them and “hurt” myself. I know I can get $10k out of you because it will take $50k for you to defend yourself against my BS claim.

    • WTF is this? Some drunken rant? Dude, it is almost 1am and I assume you are an adult. I bet you even have a mortgage. Put down the beer an go to bed. Who is up at 1 am blogging? Please tell me that you have some porn on another tab and are about to rub one out before going to bed, otherwise what you are doing on a Friday night is weird. You need to get your life on track dude.

      • You have weird tendencies. First you’re my mother, then you’re a perv?

Actually, my mother isn’t some preachy prude perv who whines about what time it is… on a blog.

It was scotch last night, and I was still up at 6 without an alarm. I can’t sleep more than five hours regardless. But I certainly don’t run to the blogs until I get things done for the day.

And I don’t have any mortgages. I do have a credit line on one property and a construction loan on another. Do those count?

      • And none of your weird distraction of a semi-rant makes my dumb rant about some bullshit extortion of a tort regarding some parody rag different than what it is.

My alma mater just got grifted for 100 large because it would cost more to litigate than it would to settle. And now we’ll hear from the hypocrites who cry about such bullshit litigations how this is some shining example of free speech… just like their babies Citizens United and now McCutcheon.

          • Bigusdickus:

Jack is right this time and all the time. OSU is getting totally screwed here. What a waste of money that could be invested in our research labs.

            LP

          • The school trashed the distribution boxes for a newspaper. This was dumb. The smart money takes all the copies from the boxes, trashes those (“distribution” accomplished), and leaves the boxes. Totally legal.

          • If they damaged them while confiscating them, then they should pay for damages. But when you’re not a student organization (they went defunct more than a year prior), then you need to deal with the school before you go and put stuff around campus. The paper itself was still available at certain interior common areas. It was just the containers that were at issue.

I don’t think anyone cared about the content. It was toothless conspiracy theory crap. It was good for a chuckle every now and then.

And now their lawyer has gone and violated the plea agreement by claiming the agreement itself states OSU did anything wrong in the first place. It’s a joke on top of a joke.

  5. BDC received this the other day. Looks like he may have plan to buy-out CR.

“My dear Mr. d caroliss. Hello and to greet you with warm condolences and true friendship. My name is (redacted). I was once the treasurer of my much beloved nation. I have for you, my friend, an exciting proposition that may provide mutual benefits.

It is my understanding that you are in need of $4,000,000 US dollar to rid yourself of a problem. I have in my possession $50,000,000 US dollars, however they are most difficult to remove from my beloved country, due to oppressive laws and regulation. I am allowed, however, to bestow upon deserving individuals such as your revered self.

If you can send to me a mere $5,000 US dollars to pay for fees and commissions I will arrange for you to receive finders fee of $4,000,000 US dollars. This will solve your problem.

I know that $5000 US dollars is a small sum to a man of your great wisdom and influence and wealth but consider the return compared to the $35,000 US dollars that was invested in the prestigious CBI Basketball play tournament.

Upon your affirmative response I will return pertinent details for you to transmission to me $5000.00 US dollars.

    Your humble servant (name redacted)”

PS: What is the true meaning of Go Beavs?

  6. Beavs load the bases with two out but Hendrix grounds out. The firstbaseman bobbled the ball but Hendrix was slow out of the box. If he goes full out I think he would’ve been safe.

  7. Beavs look lost at the plate today. Conforto strikes out for the second time today, this one on a change out of the zone and Davis pops out to shallow RF. Still 0-0 but tree has left 6 RISP.

  8. Andrew Moore has thrown 123 pitches through 7 innings. Many of those pitches have been made from the stretch, under pressure. Moore has done a great job of battling through adversity to keep Stanford scoreless today. But enough is enough.. I think it would be a mistake to send Moore out for the 8th, no matter how little trust Casey currently has in his bullpen. We’ll see in a minute..

  9. Reser with two quick outs and then two quick strikes before giving up a single through the hole and then with 2 strikes to the LHB he hits him. two on and two out, Schultz in.

  10. On to the b9, scoreless. Hope Conforto and Davis are thinking only of meeting the ball solidly; a few good AB’s more likely to win it than the long ball. Best to make the tree reliever throw good pitches.

    • Conforto and Keyes put together 2 really good at-bats but only Keyes gets on. Relying on the bullpen to keep it tied makes me a bit nervous with how they’ve pitched this season and may need a few more innings from them with how bad the hitters have been today

  11. Schultz looking a lot like last year, picking up some K’s and doing a good job. Top of the order coming up, GO BEAVS!

  12. Another 1-2-3 for Schultz but not without some excitement as Peterson pulls Casper off the bag but Jared makes the tag and then Casper fields the one hop throw from Morrison.

  13. Gutted out a W. Jace better be efficient tomorrow. I’m taking credit for the win as the bottom of the 13th coincided with the opening and consumption of a bourbon aged milk stout.

  14. I was reading some of the attendance notes for Beav baseball and it got me thinking about the possibilities of baseball outdrawing basketball next year. I can’t imagine that’s ever happened with a major conference program.

  15. Dogs over ucks 1-0 after 8 full.
Man, those nikegon unis are BUTT UGLY! Check the yellow hip pocket welts…….really poor! Not to mention the “sweater vest” look and chrome lids, sheesh!

  16. GBITS, thank you for hearing my prayers and making the hated skunks lose in heartbreaking fashion.
Now please smite the slime ball Calipari on Monday evening. Your humble rodent servant.
    BG

  17. From Will’s dad:

“Hey yall….a buddy of mine said that the Beaver football team has started spring drills. Is that true? Will there be a spring game?

Will promised to let me know but he must have forgotten. If they’ve started I can hot foot it out there in about twenty hours. Darn kids.”

  18. Tree thrower with b2b BB with one out in the b2 and that ends the day for the 6’9″ righty. Hendrix to the plate and misses the bunt but nobody covering 3b and runners advance. Hendrix strikes out on a pitch in the dirt and after Peterson walks to load the bases Conforto fouls out. End 2, 2-0 Beavs

  19. Fry with 8u8d but gives up 3 straight two out singles and tree gets their first earned run of the weekend. 2-1 Beavs b3

  20. Fry starts the 6th with 86 pitches and the leadoff man is aboard on a single that drops on the line in front of Davis. Basehit to left but the opponents haven’t learned to respect Conforto’s arm and he throws out the runner trying to get to 3b. Whacked into left for the 3rd straight hit in the inning. 2 on and one out.

  21. Jackson & Reser throwing in the pen. Fly ball to Hendrix and runners hold. Yeske out but no move. Fry escapes and it’s still 2-1 with the Beavs only collecting 4 hits to tree’s 9.

  22. Why is Schultz closing? Especially after throwing almost 5 innings yesterday.
Do not feel good about this…

(Clarify: I do like Schultz, just seems he’ll be fatigued)

    • When Yeskie and Casey don’t trust the strong majority of the guys in the ‘pen, they have a tendency to wear down their main guys. Worry about how well the starters and Schultz will fare come May and June with how much Casey and Yeskie use them

    • Just shows how little confidence Casey has in most of the BP. Their performance to date, of course, seems to support his opinion. Doubt if the fact that there is no midweek game coming up had anything to do with it.
Casey has a tendency to ride his strong horses, some would say to death. Some of his decisions must be for the mental support of guys like Ben and others who just hate to come out of the game.

    • Yeah, this is the tendency. Just like Riley with is RBs.

I think Engelbrekt could close. I don’t see how 4 innings is enough to give up on a guy who was reliable if not dominant at times last year, and a guy who has the right mindset to close.

  23. Schultz coming on for the t9.
Rulli looked a little casual getting back to the bag on several pickoff attempts, no harm today anyway.

    • Hard to believe they could be worse than yesterday, but I think you’re right.

Here’s what Jim Wilson tweeted yesterday, “Got to look at Pac-12 channel and see Ducks baseball uniforms. Worse than the basketball floor, bad idea, embarrassing”

    • Overheard in the swoosh design room,”Whata we got left in yellow and green and grey and back? OK, put in a little mesh here and some stretch there, the more panels and contrast the better. Hell yes, they’ll wear ’em; we own those guys!”

    • Both work. Oregon State gets UW at home in 2nd to last weekend of the year. Them being tied right now with UW would definitely help. Also, Oregon loses and that puts them 2 behind Oregon State and the Beavers could create some significant separation from Oregon and pretty much eliminate Oregon from conference title contention when they play later this month

  24. Nice series sweep. Good pitching and defense.

The Beavs are on a roll but are still on shaky ground nationally. They can’t afford to drop a series if they want to lock up a top 8 seed and potentially host a super regional. Boyds world is showing OSU with an RPI of 35. Not great at this point in the year.

The schedule sets up nicely with Oregon, UCLA and UW all at home.

  25. In the baseball america poll the Beavs remain at #6, huskies climb to #9. UCLA drops out of the poll and Nike U falls 6 spots to #25

  26. Off topic, but I need advice on sunglasses. I’m looking for a pair that would be good to wear in and around salt water/chlorine and also provide good UV protection. Nothing fancy. I don’t want to drop some $200 on Maui Jim’s at Sunglasses Hut. Just need something simple and durable. I tried a pair of target glasses a few years ago and they snapped in half while wearing them, so I don’t want to go the super cheap route again either. Something in the $30-$80 range hopefully.

    • I found some Kaenon Rhinos for $65 on Amazon last year. I’m assuming that if you want shades near water you also want polarized lenses. You’re going to have to shop for them. And the retail price doesn’t always tell you about the quality. I like the Rhinos for fishing, but I also always wear a boonie cap over them.

ebay might be the way to go. I do recommend these, but if you can find a deal on some Costa del Mars, that might be the way to go. Just read up on the customer reviews and you will find a steal.
      http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kaenon-Sunglasses-Rhino-Polished-Black-Frame-Grey-SR91-Lens-/221411702474?pt=US_Sunglasses&hash=item338d2a76ca

      • Ebay does seem to have some deals, as do other alternative sites online, but I also worry about the ability to return them in case they have problems. Also, I just know I’ll end up getting a pair online that fits too tight on my big head. Hate glasses that are too tight.

Those Costa Del Mars look to be of pretty good quality
        thanks for the info

        • The Costa Del Mars and Maui Jims are good quality, and I would buy both before I went with any Luxottica brand… in a heartbeat. And service is always a nice touch in today’s Wal-Mart world. But I eventually went with Kaenon because of their lens tech. I was sold on the research I did, and I can attest to the performance they claim. Clarity and glare-cut are the best I’ve ever had with these suckers.
          http://www.labtalkonline.com/articles/34405

    • My brother has had great experience with Maui Jims. Getting repairs or lenses replaced, no questions asked, apparently as long as he owns them. They are ridiculously light too.

Just a thought. I don’t care for the price either, but if you don’t lose them, and get lens replacements, they may be the same or better value than several inexpensive pairs. There are offsetting considerations to the upfront purchase price.

      • Yeah, the Maui Jims are pretty nice. It’s tempting to get them, but this would be my backup pair, used mostly for kicking around outdoors. I like my main pair of Ray Bans, but they’re just not built for outdoor activities. They’re better for just sitting around the pool or driving on a sunny day.

      • I’ve had the lenses and frames replaced for no cost on my Maui Jims for at least a decade now, well shipping only. Damn expensive up front no doubt, but when they stand behind their product like that and the relief you can feel your eyes and surrounding muscles relax as soon as you out them on makes it worth it to me..

    • Grimble’s mindset and attitude is great – just what OSU needs. Pretty well spoken. Looking forward to seeing him play.

  27. Curious…why you busted out the old _violation moniker? Anticipating something? JB

PS: Glad Jack could help you out with the big sunglass decision. The man’s all encompassing expertise knows no bounds.

    • At some point I logged in with the old name on my phone when I was writing something and am too lazy to bother logging out and back in. So if you see a message with that name, you can probably guess I was writing that message while sitting on the shitter, but if you see Beavblazer, I’m probably sitting at my work desk. That’s my little ear tug to you JB.

    • I envision Jack, not as a person, but as a computerized alien, who manipulates many data systems interconnected to several servers. Angrybeavs has it’s own little niche and can take off on any given subject.

        • Hefty is relative. If I was only 6′, I would be pretty hefty. And unfortunately I have to do push-ups every day to keep from getting moobs. Oh well.

I guess technically I am a house husband since my job is more seasonal and has hours flexible enough to take and pick up the kids from school. But it’s almost fun to play the game of, “stay away from the wet cement” like it was today. So I guess house is also relevant.

If you were to be precise, you could call me a broad houses husband.

Just don’t call me late for dinner.

  28. JB-Please send updates from Will’s dad as they become available.

    Connor Letourneau ?@ConnOregonian 11m

Will Hopkins is walking around practice with a boot on his right foot.

    Gina Mizell ?@ginamizell 10m

Oregon State #Beavers reserve OL Will Hopkins has a boot on his right foot/ankle. Not practicing.

  29. Canzano interviews Riley…..and NO, Riley doesnt have the Rose Bowl as goal. BDC says they do, but Riley doesnt say that at all.

Canzano: “Your athletic director, Bob De Carolis recently did an interview with me in which he said the expectation for your program is a Rose Bowl. What did you think when you heard that?

“I think it’s great,” Riley said. “I think one of the great things about Oregon State is that somebody can talk like that and it would be a real conversation. There were no expectations in 1997. The kids at the end of practice would get together and go, ‘1… 2… 3… Rose Bowl!!!’ and I was thinking, ‘Wow, we have some things to do before that’s real.’

“We kind of knocked on the door, and I like that fact that we know that’s now in the realm of possibility and the program has grown to that point. I’ve lived that other one where nobody came to the games and nobody thought that could be real. That’s better by far than the other way. That part we can feel good about.”

Note that he never says, YES….that is our expectation! So BDC was clearly blowing smoke…..just being PC. And Riley says he feels good about being the longest tenured coach in the conference who has never got to the title and usually doesnt come close. Sigh.

  30. Pac-12 North is suddenly wide open

    kerry eggers ?@kerryeggers 31m

Rex Chapman says David Shaw is leaving Stanford, to be replaced by Ty Willingham #DoneDeal

  31. Beavers are going to lose 3 linebackers after this year and will definitely require a jc guy in the mix for 2015. Standard operating procedure for OS is to wait until after high school guys have been sorted and then go after jc leftovers with questionable academic backgrounds. Bray is showing signs of thinking ahead, Bama and all other major successful teams do this every year and leave the Beavers behind with the crumbs. Yes, there is a bit of a gamble in projecting this guy who is already a qualifier. Beavers do not have the street cred to get the sure fire guys who are already tied up. And the story of finding a good non qualifier and hiding him at a jc is 20th century mythology. This is great thinking and balls by Bray rather than the same old same old. If they had gone after a few freshman (JC all league/all state) qualifiers within their reach over the past 5 years, they would have played in a couple of major bowls by now.

    • He’s an OLB… if that. Watching his tape doesn’t instill any sense of an ability to play that position very well. And I think we have six good (some better) OLBs lined up behind the two starters come this fall. So I do question picking up a JUCO player right now. But the bigger question would be why this one? The kid has gained 30 pounds and lost two inches since high school. And is tackling form is terrible. He does have a little speed, but it’s not as spectacular as the guys who will be playing while he sits on our bench for three years.

          • That was my best herm edwards voice. And I would hardly call it losing height. Everyone knows a hs roster is filled imaginary numbers. And gaining 30 lbs since hs still puts him underweight for a D1 lb.

          • I know. I was just playing.

Yeah… that’s kinda my point. he had to gain the normal amount most guys gain once they go off to college just to get to the size a HS prospect would come into college weighing. His tape says he’s 6’1″/215, so maybe he’s grown one of his inches back?

Just to make sure I wasn’t going crazy, I went and watched tapes on Willis and Liuchan then watched this one again. I’m not crazy.

  32. Is Jarmon coming back to the baseball team after spring practice? If not, has anybody heard if they are adding a player that did not make the final roster? I was thinking of the pitcher who turned down the ducks to walk on with the Casey’s crew.

    • This is the only thing I could find that approached cryptic:
“There’s some positives and negatives. Unfortunately, for our business you really … focus on the negatives and I’m trying to get those better. And the positives, you’re like ‘OK, that’s great’ and then you move on.”

Even read in context it’s pretty obscure.

    • Thanks for the link, Scruffy. Seems like Jesse Sowa did a pretty good job asking questions, especially asking directly about “the plan”. As Lindsay often reminded us, the interviewer cannot force the interviewee to give the answers fans seem to want. At least Jesse asked, where Lindsay often did not.

Not sure I’d call the answers cryptic, they just seem vague and without substance to me.
