Home Baseball Corvallis Regional

Corvallis Regional

Seems worthy of a new thread.  Beavs will need to score some runs vs a hot Tulane team that averaged 10+ runs in the AAC tournament.

Too bad the games are only carried by ESPN.  If anybody comes across some Youtube streams, please post them below and I can add them to this post.

Go Beavs

  1. As someone who sat at Goss for as long as Ben Wetzler in 2014, UC Irvine scares the shit out of me.

    Hope the boys are ready…

    • UCSB sort of got screwed by having to host San Diego.

There are a few really good smaller conference schools in the field. Charleston got absolutely jobbed by the committee.

Vegas will pay 2:1 on an Anteaters regional win; tempting but it’s hard to bet against the Beavs. The old “heart vs brain” conundrum.

It’s smart to bet against your team. You either get the joy of winning or win some money. I call it emotional insurance.

    • No prob, sorry i didnt notice it had Eastern time zone listed.
Pulled it from the NCAA’s website.
Will try to get that updated later

  2. Some pretty good games going on. My alma mater, SEMO giving the Razorbacks a good game. Were down 8 to 0 and now I think they are down 10-9. Ducks tied in extra innings.

The ball has been really jumping off the bat in Corvallis today. Hope that’s a good thing for the HR happy Beavs

Its always helpful to blow a few easy outs early in the game. So much for focused defensive effort. Once again this team has hiccups in a pressure game.

Now the next thing for them to do is come up and try to hit 3 run homeruns for the rest of the game and strikeout over and over.

  3. Just turned in to the game. For a minute or so thought it was a duck broadcast, so much chatter about their baseball program.

  4. Gotta work the pitchers better. When we get in the offensive slumps, like the last month of the season minus 2 games at UA, we don’t get to bullpen. Leadoff walk here in the 5th so hopefully they can start to work him. He’s been very efficient thus far

    • That gives May at least a 3 run lead to work with; any chance he not only gets through the sixth but also gets part of the seventh? He’ll be at 91 when he comes out for the sixth, oh for some old time Beavs D!

Update: some of that old time Beavs D would have gotten May out of the 6th, but nope.
      6-4 Beavs after the t6.

  5. I feel like Hainline has been in a bit of a slump. 1-4 tonight but doesn’t seem like he’s been super productive over the last several weeks. Perhaps I’m wrong

Can Guerra attempt to shorten up and look for a breaking ball? He still looks lost at the plate.

I don’t want to harp on him but man it is tough to watch him at the plate and in the field.

I don’t get pulling Keljo with only needing 2 more outs. He was around 34 pitches and was cruising. Then they bring in Holmes for the final 2 outs with a 6 run lead. Seems like a waste to use Holmes when they could very well need him for the next 2 games.

    • I agree that is seemed a waste to use Holmes (even though he only threw 9 pitches).
But I also agree with the move to pull Keljo; just would have used another arm to get the last outs with that 6 run lead.

  8. 3

Not quite a solid win but it gets the job done after the rocky start.

Interesting to bring in Holmes in a non save situation. Likely means he won’t be seen tomorrow.

Infield problems continue to be everyone’s fault. Bad throws and the inability to pick throws by the first baseman.

  9. Kind of a best case scenario for OSU with Irvine using most of their best pitchers today in a shootout with Nichols.

Hope it pays off for Beavs and Kmatz is sharp.

I wonder if Mitch decides to play Trotsky at 3rd.

Irvine did use their best two arms out of the bullpen. After those guys, there’s not much left. Looking at the stats, they have their three starters and two relievers with the bulk of the innings. The rest of their guys look like 1-2 innings max.

I’m guessing Canham will start Caraway early for his bat and sub him out later in the game for defense.

Same game plan tomorrw, get to the starter and make the Irvine bullpen throw extended innings.

      • It’s unfortunate that we always seem to bump Trosky out yet he’s by far the best infielder we have from a defensive perspective. I’m not sure Guerra’s bat outweighs his liability in the field…at least not how he’s been hitting over the last month. Granted, he’s been better at the plate the last 2 games but he could’ve helped out at least 2 throws and perhaps misplayed a ball hit at him early in the game. Maybe next season Caraway goes back to short and Trosky gets 3rd? I’d hate to have Trosky at 2nd… seems like a wasted spot for him with his defensive ability.

Having dinner at del Alma, group wearing Nichols state shit walks in. Arrogant douche tells server this place sucks, she asks ‘the restaurant?’ he says no Oregon. WTF? Lol. Then asks her if she enjoyed her tip. Holy balls. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger ducking ass, and I’ve been around plenty of yuck fans

    • To be fair, the last time they were in Corvallis, a Mike Riley led team put nearly 80 pts on them.
Not a fun place for that school to visit

      • Had a sideline pass for that one. Was an unfortunate situation with Hurricane Isaac cancelling the opener so they had to reschedule it for after the Civil War. Nicholls was at the end of a 2-year stretch in which they had only 2 wins vs NAIA Evangel University. Just a really bad FCS team having to travel all the way across the country at the end of the season to play #16 OSU that had caught lightning in a bottle with Mannion and Cooks.

    • I think you’d have to be insane to be in the Willamette Valley in late May with the weather we had the last couple of days and say Oregon sucks.

I hope Trosky does not get frustrated being under utilized and transfers at the end of the year. He’s earned the shortstop position for next year, clearly.

    • 2
      1

Rumor around the team is the reason Trosky has played very little except for injury coverage is that he let it be known that he is going to transfer. Can’t really blame him. Guerra and Kreig haven’t deserved to be in the lineup for the last two months.

    • This has been my fear too. As a freshman he was better than Dernedde at short and I doubt MC would’ve subbed out his golden child Dernedde when Trosky was a sophomore so the injury might’ve not been the worst thing for him from an eligibility perspective. He definitely should’ve been getting more PT this season with how bad the infield has been defensively. I’d assume Guerra and Hainline are both gone after this season and obviously Bazz, seems like a bad move for Trosky to xfer as it would seem highly unlikely that he wouldn’t be the starter next year at either SS or 3rd. It get it though, for some reason Mitch just doesn’t seem to want to give him the time he’s earned from his limited play time during his career. I could see Tyce Peterson xferring out as well…he hasn’t played since the 3rd or 4th week of the season it seems like. They do have a stud in Xaveir Neyens that could be on campus soon but he very well could end up going in the draft.

““I feel like that’s kind of my job, to go out there and put on a show,” Turley said. “The (fans) paid money to be here, so I’m going to give them something that’s worth watching.”

It took one pitch for the show to become a spectacle.

Turley hammered a first-pitch fastball on top of the bullpen in left field for a grand slam, delivering the Beavers a 6-3 lead and sending the record-setting crowd into delirium. As Turley approached third base during his home run trot, he raised five fingers into the air — offering an on-the-fly statistical update of the number of grand slams he’s hit this season — and then beelined to the Oregon State dugout, where he bulldozed through teammates, chest-bumping and high-fiving his way from one end to the other.”

    • As far as location, they are great. Elevated over the fence, and provide a great sightline of the field. As far as your butt is concerned, they are barebones basic bleachers.

“In October, WSU and OSU asked Molinari to advise them on what a two-member conference should do with the San Ramon production facility, which had just opened in August. The complex boasts five control rooms and some of the most advanced sports production technology. “It’s a one-of-a-kind facility, and very rare on the West Coast,” Gould says. “I think we’re the only conference that owns something like this.”

It obviously didn’t make much sense to keep an entire network for a two-member conference—especially one saddled with legal issues and undesirable from a distribution standpoint. But the network had quality employees, as well as the San Ramon studio. Molinari suggested it could either be sold or kept and used as a bargaining chip in conference realignment. Potential new members could be wooed by the facility’s unique capabilities, as could a conference agreeing to take WSU and OSU in.”
    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/the-pac-12-wants-everybody-to-know-that-it-isn-t-dead-yet/ar-BB1nqJy9

““With enough outside work, we hit our overhead—and then at that point, any additional outside work is pure profit for those two schools,” Molinari says. “That would be the best-case scenario.” Once a major liability, the Pac-12’s new network arm could turn into the conference’s biggest asset.”

Tom Hansen… Larry Scott… George Kliavkoff… all getting schooled by Teresa Gould in a matter of months.

  14. Wow! And I heard/read that Bill Walton called Molinari offering his assistant when he heard the news of Molinari’s hire. That’s quite a blessing.

    • Several ranked ACC vs SEC games today. NC vs LSU, Virginia vs Miss St, NC State vs S Carolina. LSU left for dead seem to be getting hot at the right time, unfortunately.
Hopefully ACC proves their higher rankings and win-out.

      • We can relate and know that baseball is a difficult game. Even very talented programs have a tough time getting to Omaha. Casey was a great general and the 3 titles will always be incredible achievements.

        • Zona on the same track for elimination….Grand Canyon and Dallas Baptist two solid programs in their regional, was hoping for better PAC12 representation. Oh well….

          • Obviously you want to play the best but that Arkansas pitcher made these guys look silly out there. Be nice to not have to face him again. Besting UNC again would seem very poetic given the early title runs

          • So far this freshman pitcher for UCI has been making them look silly with that breaking ball. He’s a mighty though. Maybe it’s just breaking balls they can’t handle.

  15. Alabama gets dumped by Stetson. That’s 2 SEC teams that did not deserve the 2 seed in their regional. And probably didn’t even deserve to be in.

  16. I realize they might not have played each other given different game outcomes. I still think it’s ridiculous, stupid.

  17. t3 and Caraway still can’t connect with Guerra; another error that maybe should have been charged to Guerra but wasn’t.

    • Wasn’t a great throw but damn, we’ve had guys at 1st base for 15 years now that scoop that in their sleep. Just awful. Guerra wasn’t even looking at the ball. Put his glove out there and it seems like his eyes were closed.

  18. Bazana at the plate is just unbelievable. So dialed in.
Breaks the single season run record for OSU with that homer

  19. 2
    1

Hainline opens the b5 with a single; good start on a move to respond to the eaters run in the t5.
    2-1 Beavs.

The gods smile again on Guerra, gets a single off what usually would be a fly out. 2 on now with Bazz coming up.

  20. Kasper isn’t good enough offensively to keep the 4 outfield rotation with Turley as DH. Gotta be a way to get Trosky in the game with Mason as DH.

  21. Well, it got exciting there in the 8th but Holmes gets the last 4 outs to close it out. Can’t have a close game tomorrow since Holmes is likely unavailable. Doubt he sees 3 straight games.

    • The disappointment in the ESECPN announcers’ voices when K State took the lead over Arkansas was absolutely delicious.

      • How many teams did the SEC get in? Did I hear 11? That’s ridiculous. SOS seems to be a bullshit formula that is primarily in place to benefit mediocre SEC squads. It will never happen and ESPN would protest from the rafters, but I’d love to see a 7 or 8-team cap on conference invites. Let three or four deserving mid-majors in instead of boring middle-of-the-pack SEC teams.

  22. Wofford chases LSU’s starter after 2 runs, leaving the bases loaded with two outs in the first–27 pitches.

New guy comes in and throws a strike. Pitch two was catcher interference. Pitch three was a double.

  23. Unfortunately, LSU is starting to come back, only 6-5 Wofford now. The announcers are not even pretending to hide their glee.

  24. Who cares about LSU

Trevor Larnach is batting leadoff for the Twins and has been recently because of moneyball?? Smashed a leadoff hr today.

  25. Could we be wrong in thinking Mitch is exclusively about analytics and has no feel for the game?
There’s this from him regarding Kmatz yesterday:
“As I was telling Jacob … being in the dugout, you live through the guys on the field a little bit. You can really feel their emotion … that emotion came out of Jacob tonight. It made (me) really feel that special moment, the fire that’s in them right now.”

Naw, there’s a difference between excitement/enthusiasm and situational decision making.

    https://archive.ph/UrOxg

    • They were good, except one LSU player was an outlier with a lot of low pitches called on him.

I think it was because he is short, and the ump was overcompensating.

    • 1
      2

The problem was depth of pitching. Their frosh starter had already clocked weekend innings, so he was only good for four. Their next frosh pitcher was their 4th most used this year, and he had issues keeping the ball down.

JMU pitcher went 54 pitches on Friday in their game against SC, which they lost in extra innings, only to come out today and throw 100 while shutting out the Cocks.

    • ‘Eaters burned two of their better arms. 17-7 final impacted by a 9 run 7th for the Eaters.
Slugfest tonight, yes; but will HBP be a factor (‘eaters lead the country by a wide margin there).

        • Getting hit.
Eaters been hit more than anyone (166 times vs second place @ 144).
Beavs aren’t as liable to hit batters as it often seems to some of us. Still, in 58 games our Beavs have hit 83 batters and are tied for 81st nationally; while ‘eaters have only hit 60 and are tied for 232nd.

Tonights game is on ESPN+????? Any word on if they are going to play or delay/postpone?

I tried to subscribe to it but keep getting bounced to a page that says try again. Frustration level rising

    • I haven’t seen anything on social media saying it was canceled. I think as long as lightening isn’t an issue that they’ll play. Maybe if it turns into a torrential downpour but seems kinda lame to play 1 game in the rain and cancel the 2nd. I could see a lot of runs being scored in this one. Pitch command likely impacted and we already can’t throw to 1st base accurately so there’s that.

As for ESPN+, there was an “X” post from the baseball account that said to stay tuned as there’s a chance it moves from espn+. Something to the affect of, it’s currently set to air on espn+ but that could change. Stay tuned”.

  27. Georgia’s Condon (potential #1 pick) w .445 avg and 40 million home runs going up against GT pitcher w 8.42 ERA — wonder how that one will end?!?!?

  28. Trosky to start at 3rd! Mitch probably had tears in his eyes when he realized he needs to have defense on the field in these conditions.

    • Sad part is he only pulls Caraway doesn’t do much for the hole at first or behind the plate. Watch for Eaters to be aggressive on the base paths tonight. Alot of small ball with the wet conditions.

Ball isn’t going to be flying tonight OSU still puts up 6 but not sure it will be enough if Eaters chase Eric out early because of the catcher issues. Don’t look for OSU bullpen to be much of a savior tonight.

    • Not only that but any advantage we had with our pitching is blown. Unless he gets a double play to get out, he’s gonna be pulled in the 1st. The post-season moment too big for the freshman unfortunately.

  29. Non-baseball comment, but Rueck appears to have followed the route of WT and grabbed another foreign player today. Think that’s the 4th player from overseas he’s gotten in this cycle.

    • I saw an article that said he still has two more scholarships, but probably won’t use them. Not sure where The Oregonian got their intel, but an 11-count roster seems kind of light.

    • Rueck now has 11 players on scholarship with 4 scholies still available. Scott has always been satisfied in that 10-13 range, I think he now has all he wants, especially with so many newcomers to the “family”.
I count 5 seniors and 2 in every other class. AJ and Kelsey Rees will have great opportunities to shine.

Segura with a lead-off walk. Ugh. Was nice to have the score evened up so you’d think he mightve calmed down but he just doesn’t have it today. He’s all over the place.

    • I wasnt able to watch before they called it. What were the curcumstances that had Parker worked up?(other than cancelling in general)

      • The fact the weather was the same as it had been all day. If it was too wet to continue the game it was too wet to start it in the first place.

      • The decision took forever, with the regional NCAA rep inserting him/her self and the umps calling both managers out before continuing to discuss things among themselves.
Parker assumed the confab had something to do with Micah McD nearly being hit in the Beavs half of the inning and then Segura hitting the anteater batter. He felt that conditions had been bad all day and wondered “why now?”

BIG JIM had to nearly insist they go to a radio break.
        Others may have another interpretation.

        • I got home and tuned in basically 2 pitches before they called it. Saw that one hit the backside of the Irvine batter. I get being mad, but it sure looked like pitches were pretty wild in the replays they showed, and we just gave Irvine a free base on a wild pitch. Plus tomorrow will be dry to finish this inning.
It’s not like the Beavs haven’t benefitted from weather delays in the past. (2018 Omaha comes to mind vs UW, plus didnt our pitchers get an extra day off after the UW game?)

  31. 13
    3

No way they should have kept playing. Pitchers had no control and shit was getting out of hand. Imagine if we lost due to some fluke plays…would result in AngryBeavs getting angrier.

  32. 4
    1

The wild pitch for our sixth run was ridiculous. I think they invented T-ball because of it. I agreed with the announcers that playing for your season shouldn’t be determined in that rain. We will get them today anyway.

    • What’s our bullpen situation looking like for today’s games?
Amazing how little pitching depth this squad has.

      • 2
        1

Bullpen is in good shape and the pitching depth is honestly a lot better than most of the teams left in the field. Keljo/Lawson are pitching at their highest level of their Beaver career right now after being pretty bad early in the season. Lawson has given up 3 ER since the beginning of April. Bridger Holmes and Joey Mundt have had some hiccups but have been reliable all season aside from that. Having a legit 1-2 punch in the rotation and 4 reliable arms in the pen is pretty rare. Kentucky is the 2 national seed and has maybe 4 guys they can rely on. Wasn’t looking good early but Dorman has done a good job. Kmatz and May have been easily the best they’ve been in their career and guys in the bullpen have made huge strides since about mid April. The negative feelings towards the pitching are really based on about 3-4 bad games while they’ve mostly been really good for a while

      • 1
        1

I think everyone is available. Maybe Hunter/Lattery/Keljo to start the game to bridge the gap to Mundt and Holmes.

However in a game 2, there would be zero pitching on both teams.

    • 1
      1

Deciding a game on what team benefits from fluke plays due to weather shouldn’t happen, so thankfully they came to their senses. I’ve never understood wanting to see a baseball game where the elements are impacting every single element of the game. I’ve also seen Beavers fans saying this suspension benefits Irvine, which I’m not sure how it does. Keljo, who has looked really good lately, should be available to go 2-3 IP out of the pen now that he got an extra day of rest and that sets it up to go to Mundt and Holmes to close it out and Irvine is very limited in arms. Not sure they’ll have the guys who can limit the offense. Beavs should be able to finish the job today

  33. 1
    1

I know there’s often a “luck o’ da Beavs” feeling on here but we sure the committee doesn’t want the Beavers in Omaha? They got a pretty soft regional and Kentucky is honestly the ideal matchup for a super. Beavs have a massive advantage in the starting rotation should they advance today and Kentucky has nobody close to Bazzana offensively. Win today and I’m feeling pretty good about a return to the CWS

    • Anything on the road is gonna be rough and we still gotta get past UCI. I kinda feel like there will be a game 3 vs UCI today. Liked our chances better for the back and forth type game is was resembling yesterday in the rain, etc. An extra day of rest helps UCI pitching staff out more and you have to wonder if the atmosphere will be different as you’d have to imagine work schedules will impact a lot of people.

    • 1
      2

Will they pro-rate the cost based on number of days or are you stuck paying for a whole month? Yes I’m that cheap, especially when it comes to giving espn money.

      • I believe they give you the access until the end of your billing cycle…so I don’t think they will prorate the cancellation.

  34. 1
    2

Sucks that the extra night’s rest got UCI back to their ace. Assume he doesn’t have a lot of pitches but he only threw about 50 in game 1 so who knows. Beavs have been making contact though.

It’s also unfortunate how bad our defense is. That error by Kasper was on a ball hit right at him. It was struck pretty good but he literally didn’t have to move yet still muffed it.

  35. Like clockwork, Lattery is good for about 30 pitches then the rails fall off. I’m sure he was on a pitch count already due to the injury but he’s never been the guy to go more than 35-40 pitches before he has to come out. 2nd time thru lineup people figure him out.

  36. Wow, leave the bases loaded for the second inning in a row… You just know this is probably gonna bite us in the butt.

  37. 1
    1

Interesting tidbit, at least to me. I’ve always talked about MC adopting the Mariners mentality of offense over everything else and how that’s been a failing model for them with lack of post-season appearances. This season, they’re leading the division but it’s due to pitching and defense. They’re top 6 in ERA and 1st in WHIP. They’re in the mid 20’s for runs, BA, OBS. Although, maybe the West isn’t very good this season as the Mariners would be in 3rd place in just about every other division in the MLB.

    • I follow the Mariners, and we’ve gone through this many times. Since you brought it up again, I would like to point out the false equivalency. The Mariner’s mentality works excellent in the Minor Leagues. Go look at the Single-A Modesto Nuts right now. Their run differential is +142 for the season, and the next closest team is +33. It would be best to view the entire picture instead of looking at the easy out. The problems with the MLB team have to do with the sheer lack of offensive talent. The Mariners refuse to spend money on free agents and are stuck with subpar players compared to most teams. In addition, they brought in Brant Brown to fix the strikeout issues this year. They recently had to fire him, but it seems clear it was a cop-out. Listen to what the players say. They liked him a lot and considered it their fault that he was fired.

Either way, OSU’s offense is one of the best in the country, and pitching/defense has been the issue. That is the complete opposite of the Mariners.

      • So they can make it work with their farm system but can’t get the right tools for their club? Anyone outside of JRod bring all that success to the big leagues or can’t they develop that farm system talent to the big show? I understand the M’s have historically had issues with spending and free agency but it does seem like they’ve been doing things well with their pitching acquisitions and developing the arm talent.

        • The farm guys are too young and need more time to be ready for the MLB. Most of their offensive talent is in A and AA and is teenagers or in their early 20s. The talents there are just going to be a few years. Cole Young and Harry Ford are the closest, but both are in their early 20s. Maybe we’ll see them next year.

Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, and Ty France are shining examples of the Ms’ successful player development. In fact, France was a castaway of another team, and yet, we’ve transformed him into a serviceable hitter.

None of the Pitchers we have now were picked up in Free Agency. We traded for Castillo at the deadline. Gilbert, Kirby, Woo, and Miller are all young pitchers we developed, and they are all now at the MLB level and killing it. Not to mention, we have the best closer in the game Andres Munoz.

We needed a big bat this offseason and had the money to do it. The M’s are currently 17th overall in payroll between COL and CHW. The owner wants to refrain from forking out the funds because we are one of the most profitable teams despite losing. It just sucks because they are wasting their window. We have the best rotation and bullpen in the MLB and they are all young and under team control. This team would be hard to beat if we had a semi-competent offense.

They are 12-4 in one-run games and 27-3 when scoring more than four runs. They have scored fewer runs than OAK, Have a worse run diff than DET, and are on pace to break the all-time strikeout record yet have the largest division lead. So yes, there are more frustrating teams to follow than the Beavs. Haha

          • Yeah, I’m not hating by any means. M’s are my squad and the front office moves throughout the years have been pretty head scratching at times. Seems like they always overpayed for old talent and we’re caught holding the bag. Lol.

          • I confused you with someone else who always hates on the M’s. Sorry about that.

It’s frustrating; we now have a GM who makes pretty good moves but is stuck with crappy ownership and doesn’t want to pay. Before, we had a crappy GM, but ownership was willing to give out contracts. It’s been hard to watch over the years but here I still am. Haha!

  38. Seems like Tibbett’s getting stronger for the Eaters. 2.2 innings pitched – 44 pitches. High for the year is 58 pitches.

  39. 9
    1

That replay made it look like McDowell beat the tag at first. That Macias HR should have scored an extra run.

  40. Holmes is getting screwed on some of these calls. Threw some nice looking strikes and nothing.
Oh well, glad the defense got them out anyway.
    Good job Beavs

  41. 4
    2

Glad the boys won but concerned about continual sloppy play is going to cost them. How many runs were lost or scored by UCI do to being picked off base, followed by hit or HR, and errors and wild pitches. Didn’t an outfielder drop a flyball? Championship teams don’t play this way. They need to get that stuff cleaned up right away.

      1

Season long issues don’t get cleaned up in week. They might get lucky with a clean game but the issues will pop up vs Kentucky.

      • Yeah, I know. Hopefully they can clean some of them up. Not looking for perfection just some consistent sound fundamentals.

  42. 2
    2

Also concerning is the amount of times they have the bases loaded and don’t get a clutch hit. Leaving runs on the table combined with sloppy pitching/defense has me concerned for the Supers. I watched a little of Kentucky against Illinois and their pitching and offense seemed really solid, though it was a small sample size, and they did give up 8 to Western Michigan. Other OSU fans online seem to think it’s a favorable matchup for the Beavs, so maybe I’m just buying into the SEC dominance hype?

    • Yeah, I thought about that to. But a good hitter is only successful 30% of the time. Some of these pitchers are pretty good. I know what you mean though on missed opportunities. You have to take advantage of them when they arise or they could come back to haunt you.

  43. Kentucky is the #2 seed for a reason. They play very good defense, led the SEC in offense during conference play and had good enough pitching to keep them in games.

Common opponents – Somehow they lost to WSU early in the season at neutral site game. Took two of three at home vs Arkansas and then beat them again in the SEC tourney.

Beavs have a very tough test on the road. They have never advanced to Omaha on the road in supers. Kentucky has never been to Omaha or hosted a super regional. So one team will make history by advancing.

  44. Wow! I did not know Beavs only made it to Omaha playing at home. Agreed, will be tough to advance. Hopefully they’ll catch lightning in a bottle by cleaning some things up and getting solid pitching.

  45. Undeserving Florida w 32-28 record and losing conference record is showing signs of becoming another 2007 champion….just goes to show strength in numbers and makes me think how well the PAC would do with 8+ bids to the tourney — I would think there would be at least three, possibly four PAC teams remaining….baseball is such a statistical crapshoot, no wonder none of the 2023 MLB favorites made it to the World Series, sometimes the ball just bounces your way (or not).

    • 2
      1

Yeah, I was just checking and the SEC had 11 teams in the tourney and the ACC had 8. The Pac only had 3. Percentage wise the SEC only had 45% of their teams advance while the ACC had 50% and the Pac 67%.

      • 1
        1

LSU out too.I’d have to look it up, but I recall about 5 years ago(?), the committee loaded up the tourney with SEC/ACC similarly but had only one west regional. Basically an embarrassing showing by both conferences….I believe an SEC team won it all, but SEC 10 teams and ACC 8 or 9 teams, what a sham!

  46. 14
    0

It is easy to focus on the negatives, but it was great to see the bottom half of the lineup playing well and the bullpen getting it done in the second half of the Irvine game. Kentucky will be a tough opponent, and we haven’t been fantastic on the road this year, but maybe this will be the series that they put it together. You don’t make it to the Supers by not having the pieces. We have the pieces to win, they just need to keep putting it together.

  47. 5
    1

Yeskie and LSU blow their comeback bid and fall to NC in extra innings.

Maybe we’ll see another OSU vs. NC CWS rematch?

  48. Regional host Oklahoma taken down by UConn tonight. I’ll count that as another SEC loss.
Game featured a strike-out dropped by the catcher, who couldn’t tag the runner, then overthrows it to 1st clear to the rightfield corner. UCONN runner gets to 3rd base on a strikeout.

  49. Evansville won a regional for the first time in school history. They were the 4 seed. Only the 9th time a 4 seed has won a regional

  50. 7
    2

Great showing by the Beavs. Now 2 wins from Omaha. May and Kmatz are a pretty good high school pitching staff and now they have a chance at Omaha. I’m figuring the SEC has been overhyped and Kentucky isn’t the juggernaut the number project. If the Beavs can jump on them for a few runs early, I think Kentucky will fold under the pressure of hosting and losing that advantage.

Student Beaver must be distraught to see this OSU team has already exceeded his dire predictions. Haven’t seen him comment all weekend. He must’ve taken a trip to Santa Barbara for the weekend.

  51. Does anyone know if since the Beavs SR is starting on Day 2 and it looks like the winner of this series is lined up with the winner of the NC State-Georgia SR which also starts on Day 2, that that makes it more likely that the Beavs first game in the CWS would be on day 2 (Sat June 15) should they advance that far? Or is the NCAA not that logical with their brackets.

    • I think it is telling he hasn’t sniffed much of a head coaching job. I don’t think he has the demeanor to be a head coach. He left OSU because he wanted to be a head coach. I doubt he’d come back here to be pitching coach, if we even wanted him back

    • His wife/Yeskie’s departure didn’t seem to leave on a good note although it could have been her just caught up in the moment.

      • Yah I was gonna say the same, seemed like they both burnt bridges on their way out of town.
I don’t expect to see him back, nor would I want him back.

      • I would assume you keep Segura as 3 spot. Hopefully the playoff jitters are out of the system now. However, if they do make a change, I’d assume they go to Lattery or Hunter. While Keljo has been awesome his last 4 appearances, not sure a super regional is when you give the guy his 2nd(?) career start. I do think if he keeps pitching this way, he’s put himself in that conversation to be a top 3 starter for them next season.

        • I’d think Hunter is more likely than Lattery who has been on a <40 pitch count and, I thought, tweaked something in his last appearance.

For now, I like Keljo right where he is, 2-3 inning setup man for Holmes.

          • Yes, I think Lattery left with a trainer. Lattery has only been able to go about 40 pitches his whole career but he’s got the starting experience from last season. Hunter hasn’t been the same as he was the 2nd half of the season 2 years ago, but again, he’s got starting experience. I still think Segura is the best option regardless of his struggles the other night.

Thanks again NB for posting game times. I guess the powers that be don’t deem our match up worthy for ESPN or ESPN2. Uugghhh!!! Probably check the SEC network.

All we really need to know about Kentucky:
Do their Friday and Saturday guys both throw low 90s heat and they on a lot of off speed breaking balls to get outs?
If they don’t rely on off speed stuff, the Beavs are already in good shape for a series win if not a 2 game sweep. If it is a freshman who tosses mid 80s curves all day then we are in trouble.

I like Beavs chances no matter though and kind of expect Kentucky has been hyped a bit much for the situation.

    • Kentucky is going to be hungry for their first CWS appearance.

Going 22-9 in SEC play is no joking matter. I expect a very tough matchup.

    • 2
      1

If you go by Boyd’s World ISR ratings, Auburn’s chances of beating OSU in Corvallis in 2022 were similar to our upcoming chance to beat Kentucky. The ISRs for the home and visiting teams are almost the same.

Scanning some of the many Caitlin Clark articles, I guess the WNBA has truly “arrived” with plenty of cheap shots, unnecessary roughness, flopping, trash talking, and post-game trash posting. It looks like the game is going from mostly ignored to mostly absurd and ugly. I didn’t watch it before and won’t now.

    • 17
      2

My take is the WNBA a joke and the players aren’t bright enough to see the value Clark has brought to their “league”. Lots of racist comments and frankly hateful comments and actions by players, coaches and talking heads about Clark.
I admire her for sticking with it in the face of ridiculous jealousy and pettiness. Some of the ESPN losers have gone crazy trying to defend actions while poking at Clark’s “welcome to the WNBA”
It is either manufactured and Reese is playing the role of villain on purpose, or all of the gay and/or black women are so dumb they will injure her and ruin her career before it is started, and be glad about it.

For once I find myself agreeing with LeBron and Draymond Green. Leave her alone and let her just play, and get an enforcer asap to knock someone out next time she is attacked. Jordan needed Oakley for the early years, take note.

WNBA is filled with delusional self important and arrogant women who think street thug is what will sell. Wrong.
I admit I’m curiously checking in on Clark but the other clowns in the league can move along, not interested in a long line of women acting like they want to be dudes on a court.
YouTube has some great videos mocking the overall talent and abilities of WNBA. Some funny commentary on the amount of money the NBA has lost trying to keep WNBA afloat for 20 years and these women are complaining about their salaries, travel etc when they are a financial disaster as a league. Teach them basic economics and tell them to grow up and earn something. Ridiculous.

      • A lot of jealousy too. They could’ve embraced this exposure and really propelled the WNBA to the next level. Increased revenue would’ve led to higher contracts and they all would’ve benefited. A riding tide lifts all ships.

      • “My take is the WNBA a joke and the players aren’t bright enough to see the value Clark has brought to their “league”. Lots of racist comments and frankly hateful comments and actions by players, coaches and talking heads about Clark.”

“A lot of jealousy too. They could’ve embraced this exposure and really propelled the WNBA to the next level. Increased revenue would’ve led to higher contracts and they all would’ve benefited. A riding tide lifts all ships.”

Exactly what Billie Jean King is telling WNBA players. Embrace her arrival, stop the cheap shots and cheap play. She’ll brings eyes to the game and money follows and everyone benefits. Billie Jean King used Chris Everett as an example. Apparently, at about 19, Everett brought the crowds in women’s tennis didn’t have before. Some players were resentful, and Billie Jean King said “this is good for all of us” and the viewership and improved payouts followed.

Basketball could and should be a beautiful game if the rules are enforced, and players are forced to win with effort, agility, skill, and teamwork.

    • One of the things that brings fans to college women’s basketball is watching the personalities and development of the players. A significant portion of the support Rueck’s gals receive is a prime example; most folks enjoy supporting a “gal next door” type.
Off course, NIL and WCC may change that.

WNBA, with the thug factor, will never generate that same support.

      • I feel like the media is trying like hell to force the WBNA down the basketball-viewing public’s throats when I don’t find it nearly as interesting as women’s college basketball. I don’t watch much NBA either, but I appreciate the elite level of skill and athleticism.

        • 3
          2

I agree. My skepticism leads to several execs viewing Clark as a female Larry Bird and they need a “Magic” to put beside her but none exists that is remotely appealing to viewers so they are allowing villainy and controversy instead. Making the actual product secondary and less appealing.

        • This is soooo true. The media (mainly ESPN) is hysterically trying to make the WNBA happen because the success of the WNBA fits with the political narratives they are trying to push. Sports media is no longer about sports. It’s about using sports to create controversy and drama.

  55. The more I read about Kentucky, the more I like how they play the game. Emphasis on small ball, pitching to contact, and veteran leadership.

    • Yeah, they seem similar to the PC teams we were used to minus the elite pitching. Great defense…only 40 errors on the season. Meanwhile, the Beavs are like 113th in fielding %. Kentucky will definitely take advantage of the free bases given via walks, hit batters and the errors so Beavs for sure need to tighten up on that. We committed 6 errors in 3 games…that’s not conducive to advancing. Think the recipe is the same for the Beavs…work counts and get to the bullpen as early as possible.

  56. 4
    17

Rooting for the Beavers obviously, and as much as I hate the Ducks, it is nice to see the state representing.

  57. Mhver3 back on Twitter to say the ACC is going to collapse and Cal/Stanford/SMU are rejoining the PAC.

Probably just speculation, but it seems inevitable.

      • The recent noise has been that Utah wants to stay in the Big 12. They’re back with BYU, which they probably see as a plus.

        • They weren’t the source to the last rumor. That was from the ACC meetings. It reminded everyone that Utah has an out in their clause with the Big XIIIIII. So they were never approached with that contingency. And now that it’s been a rumor that blew up in the idea’s face, it’s moot.

But a Reformed Pac X might be enticing, versus trans-continental travel.

But again, nothing is going to happen tomorrow. At the rumor level, it’s just one of several possible contingencies.

      • 1
        4

Take Rice, Tulane, and Memphis and you have a solid 8 team conference with 4 Pacific and 4 Gulf Coast plus a bunch of private school money.

        • 4
          1

I like his speculative posts but as long as I’ve followed him…not sure anything has actually come to fruition that he’s spouted about. lol. however, if the ACC were to implode it would seem to make sense that Cal/Stan would be back with the Pac. Can’t imagine there would be much incentive to stay with the ACC at that point. In fact, the Beavs/Cougs might be in a slightly better situation if that were to happen since they at least have the Pac Media Network assets to bargain with. I suppose the Bay Area market is still enough for Cal/Stan to be attractive to B10 or B12 but things become a whole lot more messy with all the other ACC schools looking for landing spots if it completely dissolves. It would also make sense to me to have the B12 grab the 4 schools (WSU/OSU/Stan/Cal) to get more west coast views, limit some of the travel and the Pac Media Network.

  58. Saw the NIL appeal from Mitch on X – curious how NIL will “interact” with the MLB draft. I imagine MLB would be fine having the colleges develop players on their own dime.
Hoping the Beavs don’t lose a ton of players to the portal, but I understand cash. I also figure the Beavs might just as much be a destination for some players given the success over the years.

    • I could be wrong, but I imagine the bulk of xfers we’ll see from the baseball team would be for playing time vs the football/basketball peeps leaving for more money. The top talent like Turley and Caraway have already given up good amount of money by opting out of the draft.

      • 1
        1

If I’m Turley, I’m looking at wanting to become the next Bazzana and go top 3 maybe even #1 in the draft….to me that’s incentive for any good player to get that Beaver “pedigree” and stick around, in the eyes of MLB scouts — given success of Rutschman, Kwan, Larnach, etc.

  59. Also curious how NIL impacts the summer collegiate leagues. Since players are getting paid in any event, why not have them play on some of those independent minor league teams.

You’re going to see huge fallout on baseball even if they make it to CWS.
When you ask any athlete during season if they staying or leaving what would you expect them to say!?! MC crying for money as he knows he going to have to buy his team next year is too funny. Turley didn’t give up huge money he was rated high but his K ratio is way too high so he was hoping to lower it in college to go higher. Him and caraway didn’t need the money and it shouldn’t have hurt their draft stock, but caraway hand right now is big question.

Forrester has already hit portal and more to come.

Lattery is still hurt never was healed he just pitching through it because this is it for him. He isn’t looking at pro career just going out on a high note.

Mason threw a fit when he got pulled Monday. He thinks he is a stud, but can’t field or throw. He knows his stock going down every game even when they win or he gets a hit.

You will see May Saturday with Smith behind the plate. Nelson then Bridger. Sunday it woo be Kmatz with Weber more then likely which is killing the bullpen. Dorman is absolutely distraught with Weber back there as he can’t catch Bridger, Keljo, or Hunter so makes the bullpen decisions hard. Even though MC can’t see it look for Sunday game to be tough on pitching. Monday will be extremely hard after using most of bullpen Sunday and the struggles Eric has had with Weber back there.

Hitting going to be huge question if they keep trying to play long ball in Kentucky. Gipson doesn’t like small ball because it shows how bad of a coach he is because he has no clue on how to teach hitting. Why do you think they run to Driveline for help?? Gipson doesn’t understand what manufacturing a run means. When to bunt or hit-n-run or hit behind the runner.

Keep your head in the clouds and watch it crumble. He has the regions conference ect thanks to Casey, Bailey, Jenkins, Yeskie recruited talent. The current coaching staff is responsible for freshman and sophomore’s. Turley is last of previous coaches recruited players and he is single handedly responsible for Caraway. Kmatz is responsible for May and Travis is Hainline.

Women’s soccer and women’s crew coaches bailed this week as well. I don’t know how many of us would stick around if it meant a 10 percent pay cut. OSU has always done better than it should with its coaching hires, great opportunity, great quality of life – but I understand why someone who has been here and then is told – wait, its going to get tougher decides to leave.
You can’t pay rent or a mortgage with school spirit.

  63. “NCAA baseball super regionals teams ranked as 16 teams fight for College World Series

    4. Kentucky – One might argue that the No. 2 overall seed should be higher on this list. But the Wildcats are going against a bit of history as they seek their first ever CWS appearance. They also got arguably the toughest draw of any of the eight super hosts in Oregon State, a program with a championship pedigree with a team that spent much of this season ranked in the top 10. What UK does have is depth, with four plus-.300 hitters leading an offense putting up eight runs a game.”

    9. Oregon State – The state of California was shut out of the round of 16, but its neighbor to the north still has two teams representing the Pac-12’s last hurrah. The Beavers, perhaps underseeded at No. 15 despite a 42-14 record before the postseason, could be the most dangerous of the road teams thanks to a team ERA of 3.98, third best of the surviving 16. Aiden May (7-0, 2.88 ERA) anchors the starting rotation, and closer Bridger Holmes has 13 saves. The Beavers can swing it a bit as well, led by Travis Bazzana (28 HR, 66 RBI).

There’s no shortage of people who will log on to complain about NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, ESPN, Phil Knight, Nike, Oregonlive, John Conzano, Bill Oram, Andrew Nemic, the Big 10, the Big 12, the ACC, the SEC, Oregon, Washington, USC, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, Cal, Colorado, the list could go on and on. Everybody and everything is against the Beavs.

    • I didnt watch any of it, but I wonder of UCONN screwed up their pitching rotation in their regional since they had to play through the losers bracket?

        • They gave up early (saved pitching), Starter only went 1.2 giving up 5. Down 8-0 after 3 and still left the second pitcher in the game. Second pitcher threw 103 pitches and gave up 7 runs.

Hopefully some bulletin board material for Mitch to emphasize at pregame.
Kentucky coach sounds like he believes the SEC medicine is strong and they should advance simply because they hail from that conference.
Beavs need to be focused (defense, basepaths) and aggressive at the plate. Kentucky sounds like amateur hour and maybe trying too hard to stay loose when the pressure will be squarely on them to win their super regional.
I think Beavs win and sweep in 2, tough prediction with how Jekyl/Hyde these guys are but they are rolling at a good time. MayKmatz are both dealing right now. Bullpen has been solid and the bats are awake at the right time.

I was listening to one of their baseball shows a couple of weeks ago and they actually skipped over the Beavs when doing a Top 10 discussion. Maybe SEC pitching is trash and the Beavs are setup for a run?
ACC teams look like they may be in better shape than the SEC teams left.

    Go Beavs!

  69. Freeman up with a preview piece.
Says Lattery and Scott won’t be available to pitch and asks who will start at 3b, Trosky or Caraway. Seems to me the pitching question was already ansered by those who are paying attention. As for 3b, if Kentucky is a small ball club with several base stealers then I’d say we cannot afford to have Caraway’s questionable glove/arm involved. Maybe DH?
OTOH, shouldn’t the question be who will play 1b?

Freeman asks if the Beavs are “… trying to win a championship for the soon-to-be-dead Pac-12 Conference.”? I think y’all will like the answers given.

    https://archive.ph/hbuBM

  70. Just saw the 78% of game one winners advance. Is this a must win game for the Beavs? I think the pressure is on UK. They’re the higher seed, playing at home and from the mighty SEC. Would be great to an early lead and put even more pressure on UK.

  71. oof. Kasper in a slump bad. was 1 for 17 in the regional and grounds out in his first at bat. perhaps we really do need to move Turley to outfield and get Caraway to DH.

  73. 2
    2

Well that was deflating, Beavs had the bases loaded with one out and can’t score. Shitty at bats by Smith and McDowell who both struck out didn’t help. UK still up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

  74. 1
    2

Awful at bats by McDowell and Smith and we leave the bases juiced with only 1 out. It’s ridiculous that this team can’t do the basic shit to generate runs. You have got to deliver at least 1 fucking run in a bases juiced situation.

    • Catering to Aiden May by having Tanner Smith behind the dish is a big mistake. If you’re going with defense first with Trosky at third, you can’t really afford to do it again with Smith. He’s basically an automatic out at this point. He can’t even get a bunt down. Not putting out your best lineup in the super regionals is unacceptable.

  75. Turley with a 2-0 count has visions of a grand slam but ends the inning with a FC out.

It’s gonna 2 and a BBQ for this team. They don’t have the mental toughness on the road. It’s crazy, but they are a completely different team outside of Oregon. This was embarrassing

  81. 2
    1

As people have been saying already, Super appearances seem to be the ceiling for this coaching staff. If you can’t figure out how to win on the road, then winning a regional is the best you can hope for unless the Supers are in Corvallis, but even then, if you can’t win on the road then you’ll be an Arkansas who can’t ever win when it counts. Even more concerning is, if we can’t go beyond the Supers with what’s arguably the most talented team that OSU has had, wtf should we expect MC to actually accomplish? The team that wins game 1 advances 78% of the time. If this team had been somewhat successful on the road then I’d say there’s a chance but they’ve been really bad away from Corvallis. They played great for 2 games vs UA on the road but otherwise, the road games were not good.

Guess the question becomes, are you happy with never going beyond the Supers but always making the post-season or would you take missing regionals every few years to make Omaha and the chance for the Championship?

    • Wait, you’re calling this 2024 squad the most talented beaver team, ever? Hoo-boy, rich!

I’d say you can’t get to the WS by missing regionals and aupers

      • 1
        1

Lots of talking heads have been touting that all season and with the potential of Turley, Caraway and obviously what’s arguably the greatest Beav ever in Bazz there’s an argument…at least offensively it is. Unfortunately, this talent can only play in Goss

    • Physical talent….maybe
      Mental talent…..not even close
Coaching talent…..Casey will never be surpassed (warts and all).

      • I don’t think the physical talent matches man for man down the line-up.
Infield: If you cancel Bazanna with Rutschman, the 2018 team is far superior in the infield:
Adley Rutschman> Smith or Weber by far
        Nick Madrigal=Bazanna
        Cadyn Grenier> Hainline
        Micheal Gretler> Carraway or Trotsky
        Zac Taylor> Guerra

Outfield: Larnach cancels Turley and the 2018 outfield is far superior also
        Trevor Larnach=Turley
        Steven Kwan>McDowell
        Jack Andersen>Kasper
        Kyle Nobach=Macias

DH and other key contributors: again 2018 is superior
        Tyler Malone>Krieg
        Preston Jones>Cannon Reeder

Pitchers: Dorman has 4-5 reliable arms and even they aren’t sure things, 2018 had 4 pitchers that were essentially sure things, 2018 is superior
        Luke Heimlich> May
        Bryce Fehmel> Kmatz
        Jake Mulholland> Holmes
        Brandon Eisert> Keljo
        Christian Chamberlain> Lattery
Kevin Abel> Hutcheson/Hunter/Segura when it counted

Turley and Bazanna are the standouts and they are cancelled by the excellence of Adley and Larnach. Then the 2018 squad still has Madrigal, Kwan, Grenier and Gretler all easily better than the current roster as the supporting cast.

And honestly, Casey is unmatched. Yeskie had his issues, but at this point is preferable and superior to Dorman.

        • I think defensively what you’re saying is absolutely true with the exception of Knobach being on par with Macias. He was clutch during their run, but Macias is far better on defense and offense than Kyle was. However, from an offensive standpoint, this team is much better than the 2018 team. Where they falter on offense is the mental mistakes. PC had guys that could bunt and play the small ball and very little base running errors but they couldn’t score on the same level of this year’s team imo. Once again, it’s the difference in philosophy and what’s going to win out in the post-season. 120 hr during the year is fun and sexy, but when you slump (like they all did yesterday) and can’t do the other stuff, you’re done for.

  82. 6
    4

A consensus top 8 team all year never deserved to be sent on the road for a Super Regional. It’s an excuse of course but we should be at Goss this weekend not at the #2 national seed’s home. The good news is we have a lot of arms left if we can figure out how to score some runs.

    • Your “good news” is pretty solid; but the loss today means best we can hope for is a three game series and those “lots of arms” are gonna face a test, especially if Kmatz doesn’t do well (like at least 6 solid innings) tomorrow.
As for “figuring out how to score some runs”, gotta hope the arm faced today was the very best we’ll see.

    • 3
      1

I don’t know about that. Not winning regular season or even tournament conference titles is a big knock to that. RPI wasn’t super high. Losing record on the road. They played well enough to stay where they were initially ranked for the most part. Had they been preseason 10-15 I think they would’ve stayed in that 10-15 range most of the year. P12 wasn’t as strong as past seasons.

      • 3
        1

Seedings are based on a majorly flawed system. Georgia was 17-13 in the SEC, didn’t win the conference championship or tournament, was 8-13 against quadrant 1 teams but is a top 8 seed because of RPI and conference affiliation. Whereas Oregon State was ranked ahead of Georgia in the polls that use some common sense at minimum, had a much better conference record, and was better against quadrant 1 teams. I recall Angry has a term for this type of bias but we’re playing in a system stacked against us and now that system is producing the results that it was designed to do. Not saying they’d win a home super this year but they should be playing at home and not on the road.

        • “… but we’re playing in a system stacked against us and now that system is producing the results that it was designed to do. ”

Courtesy of ESECPN, for the benefit of ESECPN.

        • I hear you on the bias for SEC, etc but I do think the Beavs benefited from pre-season bias of their historical success. That was my point above. I think a top 5 pre-season ranking was very generous and was based purely on our name, Bazz and our offensive potential. They played well enough to not drop considerably in the polls, but had they started ranked lower in the polls, they didn’t have the resume to move up significantly. Hence my take that had they been ranked 10-15 to start the season, they would’ve stayed in that range. I won’t pretend to know Georgia’s body of work, but a top 8 team shouldn’t get swept by Cal, what would’ve likely been a 3 game sweep by USC had it not been canceled, and the losing record on the road. Perhaps I’m completely wrong on this, but I don’t think we played well enough to be a top 8 Seed this year, especially for a down year for the Pac.

          • Spot on Creek. Your pointing out the pre-season bias in favor of the Beavs got me thinking (yes, unfamiliar territory for me).
That pre-season bias will now begin to fade, it’ll be less of a factor unless coaching/performance improves.
What other things which have been favorable will be lost as Beavs reputation drops?
            …..the home field advantage?
…..the number of highly rated players who’ll choose OSU?
Point is, ya can’t live very long off of Casey’s long and brilliant run alone.

  83. 6
    1

So we likely have one last day of OSU sports for 2023-2024, and I’m kind of glad it is ending. This has been a very frustrating and frankly discouraging year for OSU sports on the field/court and enduring the aftermath of each roster being gutted within days of that sport ending.

I commend Rueck, and Bray above all of the others. I’m not sold on Tinkle and I sort of expect Mitch to depart once the baseball guys start announcing they are transferring.

  84. From Freeman’s latest:
The Beavers need two wins in two days to save their season. And based on what he saw in the aftermath of the Game 1 debacle, Canham likes his team’s chances.
“I looked at those guys in the huddle after the game and I saw what was in their eyes,” Canham said. “And they want to fight. They want to get back out there and they want to play right now.”

    • 4
      1

I don’t believe it at this point. Maybe he saw that they were all ready to transfer and cash in on new opportunitie$.
Mitch isn’t a very good salesman in those kinds of quote situations, his statements always seemed forced or a weirdly inserted cliche coach speak.

    • “Kentucky (44-14) blew it open in the seventh inning, when five walks, two errors and three wild pitches led to a seven-run uprising.”

Good thing they didn’t get right back out there…doesn’t sound like they were well focused.

  85. 9
    3

The little league coaches proved again they hand no idea what they are doing.
Having Smith bunt with Bazzana on deck is just about as dumb as you can get.
Then you only down by 3 but let’s pull the glue keeping it close by PH for Trosky and Smith. Smith was getting the calls and keeping them from running. They knew Weber is absolute train wreck so they could run all day on him. Caraway is still cautious with his hand so they were going to make him work by stealing 3.
I swear these coaches get their coaching from the book “coaching for dummies”.

Squeeze play with one of your slowest players at 3 is ludicrous. They knew they couldn’t PR for Mason as last weekend when he got pulled he threw a fit so he won’t sit again.

They have absolutely no chance today if they leave Weber to keep catching Kmatz or caraway at 3rd. Kasper is lost at the plate but they won’t sit him. It’s not about winning it’s about who we don’t want to make mad.

    • 10

Without knowing the locker room dynamics, that all sounds about right and the inmates are running the asylum. Mitch wants to be the buddy players coach, which just means guys threaten to transfer at any adversity. Not a good direction for the program.
Is that also what explains Dorman’s mystifying decisions with the bullpen?

      • 4
        3

Looks like this game will be over before it even starts. Little league coaches thinking they going to out hit Kentucky.

Defense don’t matter. Caraway and Weber back in it will be the Kentucky Derby for the wildcats.

      • So playing Caraway is likely an effort to keep him from transferring?
He is a guaranteed error at some point during this game.
Weber will be 0-4 by nights end.

Hopefully Kmatz is dominant and can keep the wildcats in check.

It would be nice to see the team reduce strikeouts and increase hits for game 2. Maybe even score a few runs.

This is the low point of expectations and I will wait to be surprised and proven wrong but I think the team will simply mail it in a fold
Like they did in Scottsdale, Berkeley, and USC.
They have lacked resiliency and focus all year, no reason to expect otherwise tonight.
        Nonetheless, Go Beavs!

          • It’d worse than that. Kasper is 1 for his last 25. I understand he’s a senior, but he’s in almost as bad of a slump as Guerra was. I think you move Turley back to outfield, let Trosky play 3rd and have Caraway DH. Kasper isn’t a magician on defense, seems like you get the best of both worlds by sitting him

          • 3
            4

Unfortunately a lot of these players are gone no matter what MC tries to do. Guerra is gone even after being given chance he fed up with it.
Micah, kasper, Elijah, Travis, Smith, trosky, Reader, Lattery, Mundt, Kmatz Macias are either in portal, draft or graduating.
If Kmatz does for surely leave look for his brother to de commit.

Turley and Caraway more than likely gone with no recruiting class coming in.

          • 2
            2

What’s your opinion on your ducks next year? Nevermind, don’t really give a shit, you can take that shit elsewhere

          • 3
            2

Is the ducks your answer to everything? You like them that much that’s all you can come up with?

I mean seriously what is wrong with you?

Do you think about them when you watching porn?

  86. Beavs get a leadoff walk, 2 guys strike out and we can’t move Bazz from 1st. Kentucky gets a man on first with 2 outs and hits a double. 1-0 Kentucky

  87. 2
    2

Two pitches that would have ended the inning without damage and were surely strikes but called balls extend the at bat for a run and now 2 on. They don’t call umps “blue” for nothing I guess.

      • 2
        2

Most are pretty checked out at this point. Coaching doesn’t teach they just told to figure it out. MC just like hearing himself, the players ignore him.

He has lost the locker room.

Well atleast this game we have offensive lineup in so we can make excuses for the bad defense.

  88. Nice squeeze bunt by UK. Scores the run and safe at first. 2 on and 1 out. 2-0 UK. Kmatz at 75 pitches. Going to have to dive into the bullpen this game.

  89. Wonder how many guys cleared their lockers and apartments before flying to Lexington.
Maybe some of them just take flights to their next school and move on without any looking back.
Turkey certainly looks like one of them. Has he hit a curve ball this season?

    • I don’t think any of these guys ahve hit a breaking ball this season. They sure can hit the shit out of 91 mph fastball though.

  90. 1
    2

Weber and Kasper come through with bb’s to tie it; chasing wildcat arm. Still no hits for the Beavs.
Mike Parker beginning to perk up,imagine his reaction if the Beavs get a hit!

    • 2 runs and 0 hits. Wild to think we’ve had 1 hit in 13 innings of baseball. Also, Yucks gave up 8 or 9 runs to TAM and are trailing.

  91. Even though they got 2 runs, that was probably the saddest bases loaded situation I’ve ever seen. Watching every hittable pitch go by, no hits.

  92. Kmatz gets through the t5 at 90 pitches. Momentum ready to change in favor of the Beavs, there for the taking, only takes a couple hits. Top of lineup due.

UPDATE: Nope,no change in Mo. 14 innings and only 1 hit!

  93. 1
    1

This ump’s strike zone is trash. At least he’s mostly consistent with both teams but wow. You’d think we’d have adapted after the first time through the lineup.

  94. 1
    3

Is walking in runs momentum? What is all that twitching Bazzana does at the plate? What’s his draft stock about now?

  95. 1

Again I say, ” Momentum ready to change in favor of the Beavs, there for the taking, only takes a couple hits.”
    b6,2-2

  96. Kmatz on borrowed time gives up a leadoff double while facing the tail end of the cats lineup. Why was he sent out there having thrown 99?
You know the cats are remembering how well they did in the 7th yesterday.

  97. 3
    1

This team is not well coached. Lack of the basics. Swing for the fence and hope. ! hit in 15 innings.
Pitching has been mostly good. Defense awful.

    • 1
      2

It would have been a decent idea, especially with the UK pitcher coming so inside to Bazzana. What a time for Bazzana to go completed out of whack with his swing. I’m not convinced Kentucky pitching is so dominating, but the Beav results say otherwise.

  98. What a sad way for the death rattle of OSU sports to go. A complete mockery of fundamentals. Getting 2 hits in 16 innings vs a squad with a mid 5 ERA. It’s just sad.

    • Still the ‘home team,’ so not giving in but, time is running out. This team just doesn’t instill that confidence that they can pull it out

  99. 3
    3

Who said this was the best beav team ever?

How can this be the best beaver team ever when your best player lays an absolute fucking egg when the lights shine brightest?

  100. 1
    1

What the hell, 1st baseman allowed to just mosey into the runners path and it’s a nothing burger for these fucking umps?

  101. What a shocker! Standing there and watching another strike 3 with runners in scoring position. Couldn’t have been a more fitting end. And I am dead serious. The Beavs played like they wanted Kentucky to just gift it to them while Kentucky played like they wanted to win.

  102. 3
    1

The only ending more fitting would’ve been if Bazzana got picked off at 1st. I can’t say it was a “great” season. Definitely one of the more frustrating and disappointing ones. Anyone want to take guesses on how many portal entries we’ll see tomorrow?

    • 4
      2

They’re not going to Omaha because they got three hits in 18 innings. Some of that can be attributed to fundamentals coaching, but to get to a D1 program like OSU, you should have those already. The players have to actually show up as well.

      • Should, but they don’t as we’ve witnessed all year. This is why PC actually spent time practicing bunting, fielding, etc. I get the feeling MC teams watch film, look at their metrics, do the mental envisioning techniques and then show up to play games.

    • 1
      1

Coaching is furthest from the reason they lost. I watched several players stare at strike three yesterday in pivotal situations. That’s on the players. No one stepped up. Everyone looked like they wanted to just get the walk and let the next guy do it. Bottom line is this team was laced with talent but lacked leaders.

    • 1
      1

Not good for the sport at all. I’m sure the Big Ten is working on a plan to buy their way into a couple guaranteed spots moving forward.

      • But plenty good for that bar that sells jello-shots. I’m guessing a new record for sure. I know I won’t be watching.

  103. 8
    4

Well the women’s bball team at least waited 2 days before they all left. I doubt these guys get on the plane and just go their separate ways tonight. What a poor display of baseball. Mitch should be grilled for this team’s lack of fundamentals.
And Gipson should be fired for not having the sense for a basic hit and run, never developing a proper strategy for situational bunting.
That team is a great waste of talent and Mitch didn’t do them any favors by insisting on playing the wrong guys for most of the year at about 3 positions.

So much for being a baseball school. That ended tonight and the shine of Casey is gone. Mitch just flushed it on national television, as his analytics for homeruns was reduced to 3 hits and scoring only on bases loaded walks. Such an embarrassment and thankfully this year of Beaver sports can be closed.
Hire the Evansville coach or someone who has a sense for the game and isn’t a buddy or an analytics guy or a pretend
    Psychologist.

I hope the majority of this team does transfer because they aren’t winners or grinders. Go pad your stats somewhere else and figure out how to hit a breaking ball, field your position.

  104. 8
    9

And yet again, my predictions come correct, despite the ear covering done by many on this board…

And just like that, the PAC-12, and likely Oregon States’ last realistic shot at winning any NCAA title given the new conference, NIL, and transfer portal implications, ends with a pathetic whimper. In the coming weeks, the portal will likely pick apart this team. Sums up the tenure of Mitch so far as well. He is able to get his teams to play just good enough to put themselves in a position to play important meaningful games, but his teams never end up winning those important meaningful games, as evidenced by coming in second in the PAC 12 three years in a row now, questionable PAC 12 tourney performances, and rough post season outings. Say goodbye to the OSU baseball dynasty. It was already on the ropes given all of the recent changes to colleges athletics, but I think we can unfortunately kiss it goodbye now.

If football isn’t able to perform to at least a respectable .500+ level this coming fall, I think it will be time to take a step back from OSU athletics. I don’t know how much longer fans should continue to invest copious amounts of time, money, effort, and mental energy into one of the most historically terrible state flagship university college athletic programs. Washington State and Virginia Tech are the only other 2 schools of the old so-called “power 5” that have same or less NCAA titles than we do.

College athletics are changing. And not for the better. It’s not fun anymore.

      • 7
        5

Thanks! Not a duck fan though! Glad they lost, but I wish we were at a point where we were so successful in sports that we didn’t always have to essentially be hoping for their losses as some sort of concession. A thing I notice when I’ve checked out their forums, at least compared to ours, is that they aren’t always providing one another updates and getting excited when we lose in games that aren’t against them. It’s like they don’t think about us at all when we’re not playing, but our fans are always looking for a Duck loss as some sort of concession prize when our teams aren’t doing well.

    • 5
      5

As much as I don’t want to, I will give you credit for this take. You have seemingly been a troll all year long, but on this you were correct. At least your ducks season ended today as well. Go comment on their downfall on their blogs too.

    • Your predictions were correct? How? You said the Beavs would lose 0-2 to UC Irvine and be bounced out of the regional. You said they would lose because of bad pitching, and we lost because of the offense. I’m not entirely sure what you got right and you definitely didn’t predict anything.

  105. 5
    3

On the other hand, I actually think the players should bear more responsibility than Mitch on how this season has turned out. At least in baseball, I’d say the coaching has much less of an impact than it does it basketball or football. The amount of times I witnessed our batters stare down balls right over the middle of the plate for strike three in important moments this season was incredibly frustrating.

    • I don’t know the actual numbers, but my best guess is that of all the Beaver strike outs this season well over half were called 3rd strikes. I was never a good baseball player, but even little league coaches told us we have to protect the plate with two strikes. I guess it was only fitting that the season ended on a called 3rd strike.

      • You can’t blame them last night. That’s an egregious call with the bases loaded and two outs. The ump’s calling that third strike was a big blow, especially since the offense couldn’t get going.

  106. 4
    4

    How did the saying go
Offense wins games, but Defense wins Championships!!!

Coaches pissed that way when they tried to be the cool kids and PH in 6th of Saturdays game. Then going with offense today even though there was no offense yesterday.

Little league coaches that’s where they should be. Gipson is only use is a BP pitcher. Has zero feel for the game. Losing Barney and Wells from the staff hurt more than they care to admit.

Players will start hitting portal Tuesday or Wednesday.

    • 10
      4

The team will be gutted and the staff should be held accountable for the poor fielding, poor base-running errors, poor pitching issues, poor strategic errors, poor fundamentals, poor hitting approach that all ultimately played a role in this debacle of a super regional.

Mitch and Dorman, if they stay, need to bail on the power pitcher/homerun hitter approach and return to the Casey small ball grind it out strategy. They will not get the big time players anymore and it will only accelerate the downward spiral if they insist on the same analytics based approach. I don’t expect them to change, but I am just saying it now as a warning for us all to prepare for a freefall in the next few years.

The assumption by Mike Parker et al, was that an independent schedule could be helpful to continue to draw star players to backfiull the roster after this group gets drafted. We know that is pollyanna thinking given what has happened to every other sport so far. The roster will change a lot, and the talent coming in won’t be as good, so Mitch has been exposed as a poser, and his strategy will only be less effective with less talented players. He must adjust or the baseball program will nosedive as the basketball program has from a once proud national brand to a has been, forgotten and mocked by the national press.
i need to stop writing for tonight, it is too frustrating to be a Beaver fan right now. Jonathon Smith and Mitch Canham are both in the same category for squandering a great opportunity for their personal agandas. It stinks.

  107. But plenty good for that bar that sells jello-shots. I’m guessing a new record for sure. I know I won’t be watching.

  108. 1
    1

Jay, you bitched about not having a new thread for the Supers, yet we came in under 600 comments for the regionals + supers combined. And most of those came last week. That’s why we didn’t need a new thread.

  109. WR committ: Ellijah Washington, 5-foot-10, 165-pounds,

Washington, rated as a three-star prospect by multiple recruiting services, had offers that included California, Washington State, Arizona, Nevada and San Diego State. He whittled his finals list to Arizona, Cal and the Beavers.

Washington, who ran a sub-11 second 100 meters this spring in high school track, joins running back Kourdey Glass, offensive lineman Noah Thomas and linebacker Jeremiah Ioane as those who have given OSU pledges for 2025.

  110. Still scratching my head over why we didn’t join the Big West for baseball.

Now we’re going to have to win 45+ games just to get into a regional.

    • Agreed. That would’ve been the smarter move than going independent and playing a fuck ton of road games.

My prediction is the road schedule will be brutal. And the home schedule is gonna suck with nothing but cream puffs.

  111. 7
    5

Keljo should be kicked in the nuts by his teammates! HTF could that happen???
Sums up the year perfectly. Lazy, stupidity played baseball.
UK looked like us when PC was coaching.

      • 2
        2

One would think that play is drilled and drilled and drilled and . . . Keljo seems like such a good kid. I wonder if he’ll move on. Will the new batting facility have a machine that pitches 85 mph pitches?

        • The sad part about it is he had been pitching great. I remember seeing him as a freshman in surprise and thought this kid has a potential be a star by his junior season. Unfathomable to just walk in the infield while a runner is running from second to home. How in the hell was not the team or the coaches yelling at him to cover the base??

  112. 8
    4

Tough to win any series, let alone a super regional when you get all of 3 damn hits.

We all knew this team was flawed. They hit their ceiling.

Congrats to Kentucky for making it to Omaha for the first time.

No idea what next year is gonna look like but I do expect a mass exodus.

Parker said on the post-game show that whike he didn’t know what next year was gonna look like, he’d heard it’s gonna be a lot of road games.

    Yikes

    • Good for the RPI at least if they win some. The PAC 12 as a whole never figured out how to game the system like the SEC and ACC did. Most those teams come into conference play with inflated records so that their RPI’s get propped up even more during conference play. Then cancel any late season games that will hurt your RPI.

  113. 4
    2

I wish there were an umpire scorecard site for college baseball like they have for MLB. That call on Guerra was ridiculous. Full count and the ump makes that call. In a low-scoring game, that essentially sunk our chances. In addition, Keljo not covering home was flat-out ridiculous, and we really don’t deserve to win after that. It’s entirely on the pitcher in that situation, you learn in little league to always cover home as a pitcher. It has nothing to do with coaching when it’s a basic play that’s been ingrained in your head since you were a kid. This team lacked leadership. You need a player that will chew your ass out when you make bonehead mistakes. I didn’t see one guy getting fired up and yelling at Keljo after that play. With no team accountability, it’s no wonder the mistakes did not improve as the year went on.

    • 51 days, and it’s ours (along with Wazzu).

I’m actually a little excited to see what we do, once we have that freedom… and all that money… and a media company that can make a shit ton more money.

I’m still baffled by the sheer stupidity of the traitorous 10, regarding all those assets.

      • I’m also giggling at the symmetry in the CFP contract and NCAA rules for rebuilding a conference.

It’s like we tried lining up for a kick, but we kept getting shoved to the side by those who were relevant.

I have a better appreciation for what Lucy does, from the standpoint of an observer.

I’m not as down on Mitch as others but one thing that seems to be missing is the mental toughness of a Casey team. He stressed them out so much in practice that the games were easy. Canham teams have melted down mentally in both super regionals he’s gotten them to.

    • I think the players under Casey really respected him and had a fear of failing him. They did not want to let him down. Not that he was going to go Bobby Knight on them but he almost willed the players to succeed. I think that is why he was so burnt out at the end of the year.

      • For sure. Some of the best coaches I’ve had were the ones who I respected. They were also hard-asses when you didn’t follow instructions, but really praised you when you did well. Getting praise from a hard-ass coach meant you really achieved something, and it’s something I craved. Maybe it doesn’t work on everyone, but I think Casey specifically recruited guys who it did work on.

    • Since they’ve basically destroyed Beaver athletics for me, at this point, I kindof want to see the rest of it go to shit.
I hope they’re successful and every other former athlete decides they deserve a cut from their playing days too.
      Burn it all down.

      • I don’t think were too far away from the system collapsing. Way too much money needed to stay competitive. I think only a handful of teams (the blue bloods) can survive and be competitive.

        • If that’s it, then they won’t be able to sustain the sports themselves.

It’s literally a lose-lose moment. They become minor league systems, and the world would treat them as such.

Wow, oh boy. Yeah, this is just the first domino to fall. Is there anyone I can sue, lol? Seems like a good way to make some change.

Mitch needs to make some changes in his teaching approach where they get back to fundamentals. Excellent defense and pitching. Bring back some small ball like Casey preached. I can’t believe these guys struck out almost 50% of the time (25 out of 54 outs)! Thats unheard of! You have to put the ball in play to make things happen.

MC is a manager not a coach. He doesn’t communicate well with players about expectations or needs of the team.
They knew Travis was not a leader and never will be they tried to force it in him but players look at him like he only cares about himself.

MC doesn’t respect players or other coaches he looks at it like I am the Dictator and that’s it. Problem with this is there are too many moving parts you need to trust your coaches.

The recruiting philosophy is now if they look the part and athletic that’s all that matters. Casey recruited off baseball IQ and those guys are there to play.

The WP is on MC for catching Weber because he looks like a hitter but dumber than a box of rocks. There a reason he wasn’t allowed to catch May. He has zero baseball knowledge behind the plate. This also the reason the 4 other catchers that came to OSU are either PH(talt) or redshirt or left the team.

Yes Nelson should have covered but it should have never gotten by, Weber has no idea where each pitch will go it’s all about yanking it back in instead of being smooth.

Strike on Mason was a strike the tv camera angle has bad perception of strikes. It comes down to if it’s close protect the plate especially with 2 damn strikes.

The fall out of players should begin Tuesday or Wednesday as they get back today.

Travis Brady Elijah, Kmatz, Bridger, May should be drafted
Micah, AJ, Joey, Ian out of eligibility
Tanner, Mason. Jabin, Dallas, Jacob will hit portal

Trent, Gavin, Nelson yet tbd yes I know what they said but right back to gbb what do you think they going to say during season!?!?

    • 6
      7

who gives a shit. you think anybody is coming back next season?
wouldn’t be surprised if Mitch cuts bait too.
      Portal entrants coming in 3…..2….

      • blah blah blah

Heaven forbid we have to rely on local players like Jack Anderson and Joey Wong to fill out an OSU lineup.

I look forward to Santana taking over 2B.

    • 6
      4

Yes, it is crazy after we had that run excellence at the catcher position. Now we have a ex catcher as the coach and the catching has been sketchy to bad at best.

I’m disappointed the Beavs didn’t play to their potential but I don’t get the bellyaching over umps. Kentucky was far and away the better team and deserved to win. Umps not perfect but fair IMO.

Mitch is not Casey but has done a good job all things considered. Next year will be interesting. I think we’ll be good not great. I hope that there is a renewed emphasis on fundamentals. Before we installed turf at Goss, the team would practice the fundamentals indoors. Wasn’t glamorous but Casey once said he felt the kids from the NW were better fundamentally because they didn’t have the luxury of playing pickup games in the rain. In Arizona and places where it rains less than Corvallis, teams tend to play games vs working on fundamentals. I’ve noticed the team tends to stand around and play simulated games in Goss during offseason. Back in the day, there wasn’t much standing around… more stations with focus on fundamentals

    • If you can’t understand, a blown call with the bases load 3-2 count and two outs in a low scoring game can affect the outcome. I don’t know what to tell you. There is a reason Angel Hernandez was forced to retire.

    • The umps were stretching the zone to the left batter’s box for them, but not us. And they seemed to do it most for our lefties. There were several pitches where their C couldn’t even frame it, because he was too busy reaching across his stance.

Is there going to be an “RIP PAC” thread?

Women’s basketball carried themselves well this year. The biggest disappointment was the subsequent roster desertions.

One of the most frustrating Beaver moments for me in the last year of the PAC was the OSU v. UW football. OSU #11, UW #5…at one point Penix went more than an hour (real time) without a completion…the Huskies were held scoreless in the second half for the first time in DeBoer’s short tenure. AND, the Beavers still lose by two, with 4 TOs to UW’s 1. I was at the game, great atmosphere, student section was great. DJ ran well, Martinez was a stud…

Probably the biggest OSU Beavers Football disappointments of course were the Riley Rose Bowl misses.

I also attended OSU @ WSU to get “the last of the PAC”viewing experince. Seeing the Beaver D slow to set up early in the game reminded me of Banker defenses. The fake punt by a player who was not the normal punter (which should have sent a signal) was frustrating. But despite all of WSU’s passes, they didn’t get a single holding call all game(?). Odd. WSU fans were very nice, high fiving me when I arrived, or shaking my hand. Great atmosphere.

    MBB held to form…sucked.

Baseball team had been showing a lack of fundamentals and focus and the Casey intensity. I’m not surprised Kentucky beat them. I guess the team did OK given the limited coaching approach. What happened @ Kentucky, and the way it ended, was “very Beaver,” unfortunately.

The last Beaver standing I guess is Jade Carey, who is in the Olympic Trials later this month. Good luck to her!

I’ll check some OSU football next year for the curiosity of transition and because of Bray’s loyalty. I expect the offense under Gunderson will look a bit like UCLA when they lost at OSU last year. Mobile QB making mistakes, short passing game, occasional spark by a RB (Griffin, et al).

  120. 2
    1

Spot on. I’ll be checking in on the Beavs, cannot imagine how Rueck will be melding the disparate pieces, and will be noting and hoping the disloyalists flounder.

  121. 3
    2

My question going forward is with fan desertions. There is no player loyalty any more. There are no contracts to hold players into being loyal. There isn’t big money to buy players. So how does that effect the fans. I think OSU has done all they can with the cards they were dealt, but the powers that want this change have long been buying players. They have just made it so they have access to all the athletes on all teams in case someone coaches up a kid into a super star. It wasn’t enough that they had first pick. Maybe after August the co owners of the pac might be more desirable to the Big 12. It would be nice to reunite 6 teams of the Pac and maybe add San Diego and Air Force. to an 8 team pod of the Big ? Then figure out some kind of contract system. Or maybe we will be like Germany, where the only sports are intramural.

    • 6
      4

We’re officially the farm system for the blue blood teams. With unlimited transfers allowed, any player who has even a hint of success during a given season will be off to greener pastures the following season.
Let’s say OSU somehow magically makes it to a college football playoff bowl game. The top players are going to hit the portal before the playoffs begin. As soon as they’ve earned their NIL for the current season, there’s no benefit to sticking around for post season play.
We joke about other schools being stepping stones. That’s us, 100%.
So, yes, I may still tune in to see how the Beavs are doing, but it will never be the same. No continuity from season to season means nothing to keep me engaged.

      • I really hate to say this but, I’d almost have us drop down to Division 2 where most kids play for the love of the sport since they know they most likely play pro ball. Rather be a big fish in a little pond, plus it won’t backrupt the university in trying to keep up with the Jones’. I don’t think this is going to end well for the majority of schools.

Did you guys see the article about Steven Nelson retiring and giving birth while farming? Incredible legacy for a great Beav. I can’t post it but you should go read it for yourself.

    • All in jest based on the prior multiple descriptions of the article. I was attempting to summarize all of the key details into one succinct image. There is a pregnancy, he has a farm, and an exciting article about eetirement…Although in our current social construct, he may be a “birthing person”. Traditional vocabulary has been assaulted so I understand your confusion.

      • 2
        12

Let us know when birthing person reaches the vernacular, along with all the other so called assaults on the English language outlined by right wing media.

        • 10

Hello bendbeaver. Never miss a chance to be triggered do we? Nice effort at tolerance.
It’s not my term. But I get it: “…right wing media” is the problem.

          • 3
            5

            It’s not the problem.

That anyone takes it as truth at face value is the problem.

Actually, it’s that anyone who takes it at face value isn’t highly confused about its numerous self-contradictory positions riddled with well known propaganda buzzwords from centuries past.

It truly is an assault on logic.

          • Certainly a healthy dose of skepticism with all news if warranted, and taking anything at face value is a fool’s errand in this circus of a culture. Test all things and hold fast to what is good.
Skepticism needs to be directed towards all media outlets, and not just “right wing media”.

          • 2
            4

            This is true.

But the preponderance of easily verifiable lies coming from the right are simply staggering.

And I correctly identify the right as all the GOP and about half the Democratic Party. The further right, the more bombastic the lie, littered with easily identified buzzwords and ideas from propagandas past.

          • lol… I had someone start off with, “But MSNBC….”

            I finished the thought:
“But MSNBC what? Likes to make money, so they don’t even pretend to stray from hosting opinion-based programming confirming the bias of millions of potential consumers? So much so that a lot of their hosts are extremely right wing politicians, if we’re using 2005 parameters?”

          • I don’t think very much is actually “right” or “left” anymore. I would say the concept of right and left is a craftily devised political tool to box the population into a herd mentality rather than being free thinking individuals. People rarely think exactly the same about any topic but we have been trained to categorize into very narrow group think categories.

          • No.

There is a center on the political spectrum from totalitarianism to anarchy. Most of our federal politicians are positioned to the right of that center.

The problem is that Mark Hatfield would be labeled a Communist by the current GOP.

          • 1
            3

“I don’t think very much is actually “right” or “left” anymore. I would say the concept of right and left is a craftily devised political tool to box the population into a herd mentality rather than being free thinking individuals.”

I had to copy and save this for the lazy take it is. It’s not only ignorant of history and politics. It’s gaslighting some really serious shit. There is an actual left and right. These things exist. The very fact this nation has stagnated under the right always should be a lesson.

Instead, we get literal Nazi propaganda shoved in our face by a literal convict, fraud, and racist, as the legal system calls it.

You and I don’t have the issues Dumbshit Donald has, because we’re not frauds, chiselers, or criminals… like he is.

          • You are listening too much to Rachel Maddow and the rest of the MSNBC crew. Get a life and vary your viewing and listening.

          • Bingo, I mean hell, when I read any article from any news organization, I am able to pull out the factual information and ignore the writer’s bias. It seems many people can’t or just enjoy confirmation bias. I fight my bias. If someone can give me facts, they are likely to change my mind on many issues.

The problem is that some people confuse facts with unfounded statements they agree with. Then, when you don’t agree with one part of their argument while agreeing with the other parts of their argument, they instantly start name-calling and labeling. Nuance needs to be recovered, especially online. It’s either black vs. white, My Team vs. Your Team, Red vs. Blue, etc. Tribalism never ends well, and I hope more folks wake up soon.

          • 1
            1

Ohio, just using ‘triggered’ as a comeback reinforces what I said about right wing media. You’ve been trolled by an algorithm to show you a video of someone saying birthing person and were triggered by it. And nothing I said was intolerant, I’m saying you’ve been duped to think you’re under siege by “the left”.

      • This is so true! And Haha! You got me there. You never know in this day and age, and you certainly don’t want to misgender someone. That apparently is an unforgivable offense that shows the person is definitely a fascist and a racist.

Yeah, I definitely thought you meant a birthing person, lol. It’s so frustrating nowadays. I call people Sir and Ma’am out of respect, and now people think I am trying to troll. No, I am just polite, the same way I open doors for everyone (apparently, that can be viewed as sexism if it’s a woman I open the door for).

What is interesting to me is these people are very anti-fascist. Yet they can’t see controlling language as a very authoritarian stance; hell it’s the first thing many fascist dictatorships did and still do to this day.

        • 1
          2

Pointing out obvious (and literal) fascist rhetoric is not being fascist.

We fought a fucking world war over that very concept…. 80 years ago.

            3

I served in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

            Where did you serve?

I also had about 30 relatives fight in that war–only about half I ever got to meet.

            Try again.

            1

Thought you fight in the war. Lot’s of stolen valor these day.

I served in Viet Nam. Place called “dog patch” outside Danang. 1stMarDiv. Also served in Gulf War. Up around Ras Mishab area again as a Marine but this time with the 2nd MarDiv.

No need to thank me for my service, it an honor.

            Shitty try

          • lol

The only valor issue is you pissing on it.

You parsing is to mean something other than is, then going off on it, is pretty pathetic, given the subject.

          • You know nothing about valor. Never seen it or exhibited it.

You talk like talk but never walked the walk.

You run your gums because that’s all you got. You got a mouth, but your ball never dropped down.

You’re a chicken shit bully. I’ve seen a million like you and you’re all the same. All talk and nothing else.

          • 1
            3

You have fucked yourself, and it’s obvious.

You can eat your vomitous hatred, and I will help you do it, if you really want. I don’t need to help, given your illogical stupidity, thus far.

But I’m here to stick it in you, if you really fail to be as un-American as you’ve just presented yourself.

            Bring it, you fucking loser.

          • 2
            1

Oh, I don’t take credit for what others did. But to each his own.

I also did a Med cruise and Carib cruise, but those were just floating around with the squids in their nice safe ships during the Viet Nam war, don’t really think of those as war service.

          • I wouldn’t either.

But if you’re a part of this nation and not honoring the actual good we have done, don’t bother criticizing what you perceive as bad, especially when you’ve been told what that is by some pol trying to scare you into making any real issues less manageable… per predictable consequences due to proven poor policies being yanked from the annals of history by narcissistic tools.

          • 1
            1

I am not going down this road. If you can’t decipher my point, you are precisely the type I am talking about. This isn’t just one party engaging in authoritarian behavior; they both are doing it. You can’t see this because it sounds like you mindlessly follow one side. With all of the fearmongering, you think the other party is going to end the country if in power.

You don’t realize we are playing right into this deflection game. You won’t criticize one aspect of the party you support. This is a big problem if we don’t hold our representatives accountable. It leads to complacency and nepotism and erodes democracy overall. So many promises were made, but very little follow-through.

It reminds me of middle school elections. I promise “I’ll give everyone free food and drink from the vending machines” if elected. Then they get elected and it doesn’t happen.

We, as citizens, need to demand term limits and get Citizens United overturned. If we don’t everything will stay the same. But that’s a very hard sell because it’s not in the interest of the folks benefiting from it, which is the majority of politicians in this country. We need to quit infighting with each other and band together.

          • Who are you speaking to?

I just said half the Democratic Party is right of center. Joe Biden was correctly identified as the right wing choice for his first Senate run… against his GOP opponent.

The “green” economy right now is the 2005 hard right’s and George W Bush’s policy, based on very conservative estimates for climate change which have since been blown out of the water.

A bunch of people who cheered for that then forget that now.

What sides are you talking about?

About half the Democratic Party, true libertarians, anarchists, and true socialists are left of center, and their voices are drowned out by money. The latter three only comprise about 5% of the population, with true libertarians making up most of those.

        • wtf does misgendering someone have to do with reality?

Are you spending your time with anyone asking you to genderize them?

Or are you a fucking tool of some scary politics, parroting the stupid, because you’re a tool?

Vegas gives me better odds on the latter.

          • Gee, and I thought this was a forum for Beaver sports. Unfortunately we have to read this crap from you. Why don’t you take your political bullshit to a different website.

  123. Sadly, we see that the MC philosophyi s yet again failing in the crucial moments. If MC can’t figure out how to win away from Goss, regionals/supers are as far as his teams will ever go, but they might be limited anyway with the offense above all else mentality. Perhaps with realignment and portal activity, we won’t need to worry about it and this truly was the last year of relevance fornthe foreseeable future.

What seems to be missing is the team element to MC squads. It feels like individuals that happen to be on the same team and not a true cohesive unit working for the same thing. Perhaps that’s the mentality now, individual success/measurables over the success of the team. Wonder if MC will be willing to make the shift to the PC model? Have to imagine it’s much harder to keep/recruit the top guns like a Turley/Caraway if we’re not in a top conference and our best bet to field a competitive squad is to get those high IQ/solid defender prototypes that this program was built upon.

    • Pat Casey experienced the frustration of these types of guys for a couple of years when he had really high level talent that refused to buy into the team. He actually made some statements about how they were surprised to get some of those talented guys to come to OSU because they were a different caliber form the normal recruits he had built it with. But he admitted there was a downside to it because they often wouldn’t buy in or accept coaching like he expected. So he reversed course and began identifying the right types of talented kids, not just talent alone, and mixed back in the typical grinders onto the roster which brought us the 2017 roster.
The question remains, will MC be able to identify the same issues, be willing to change course and stay long enough toe follow through on such a change of philosophy. So far he has dedicated the program to the analytics of homeruns at the expense of nearly everything else. It will be a big change to depart from such a drastic strategy. He has already lost many players who didn’t fit the mold, or weren’t interested in a glorified city league softball experience for a college career.

  124. I can’t believe the tack the conversation took after what seemed to me to be an amusing question about the wording in Steven Jackson’s retirement news release. Yikes!!!

Someone threw out an easily identifiable buzzword from some right wing scary story about gay terrorists coming across the border with drugs that will make our kids transvestites who want to play girls’ sports.

I can’t wait for the next scary thing. It’s all just so exciting.

      • very easily identifiable… like the propagandists wanted them to repeat it… like the idiots they are

I’m sorry I have to tell people they are tools.

I have zero ideas why they submit to being so and just parrot dumb ideas. I feel bad for them. They are pathetic.

But they don’t need to be so. So I always have hope. Maybe some pf them will actually listen to what Christ said. I know relying on a religion is kinda weak, but being christ-like has to be something some of them can relate to, despite evangelical teachings.

  125. 11

Since OSU sports have ended for all time and there is no going back, the blog will soon become a political argumentation site or Angry will sign off and it will be no more.
Thanks for the memories and the shared fan experience. Too bad it had to end like this, no Rose Bowl, no conference, no Civil War, no prospects of future championships. Oh well. It was fun to watch Quizz in 2008, Casey brought us 3 National Championships at least.

  126. 6
    2

What cave were you living in for the last 8 months? There are no miracles awaiting OSU sports as we knew it. My context for OSU sports has always been PAC10/12 related and it was destroyed by multiple directions and multiple efforts through the last several years. Go attack someone else and leave me alone. I can say it and you don’t have to agree but the PAC12 isn’t coming back and the Beavs have been discarded from major sports conferences. OSU sports have been killed and the rosters are a testament to that fact.
It isn’t a loser mentality if it is actually reality.
You preach about propaganda and fascist tropes then you try to berate and belittle those you disagree with into some type of groveling acquiescence. Get lost Jack. Go yell at yourself in the mirror for an hour and stop posting nonsense.

      6

      What is reality?

      Money?

      You tell me.

But don’t give up before it begins. That’s about the weakest shit I’ve seen.

If you don’t want to be a Beav anymore, just fucking say so. Nobody will care.

  127. 6
    6

I invested time and hope for the last 8 months wanting to see OSU win on a big stage and make a statement to all of those who abandoned OSU. All I got was a turncoat loser football coach destroying the season while job hunting, a stacked deck and refs completely throwing an elite 8 game the women should have won, and a loaded but flawed baseball team limping at the finish line like a bunch of guys already mentally at other school.
If those are a loser mentality, explain. I rooted for and pulled for OSU, except
For Tinkle, all year and it was Lucy pulling the ball every time.
I’ve decided I can’t rationalize it anymore or hope for BIG12 invite, or wait for the ACC to implode. OSU is out of the game and plenty of other schools will soon join us, but there is no going back to what was. Again OSU sports have ended, in that context. Whatever is coming next will not be as good or worth following nearly as much. This is why more than half of each roster has left immediately after their season ended. I’ve accepted it.

      9

      ????
So you’ve been the victim the whole time? You’ve not been able to see reality and adapt?

I feel sorry for you… though, not as sorry as you feel for yourself.

      • 8
        2

Good grief man. Im not the victim. Why are you so obtuse?

If I saw the train coming and spent the sports year hoping that OSU could get off the tracks, that isn’t being a victim. That’s just hoping for the best. But I’m the end, OSU never got off the tracks and ended up getting destroyed after it all. I can now move on and have sorrow over the demise but that also isn’t being a victim.
It all came about due to demonstrable actions by others in the conference and the media, OSU has been the victim in it all. But to project onto me that I somehow have claimed victim status in it is simply idiotic.
I am still upset at the duplicity and subterfuge of those who perpetrated the end of the conference, but it doesn’t make me the victim. Good grief.

          lol… still the victim

If you’re not empowered, you’re living in a victim mentality.

          It’s weak.

          It’s also telling.

Stop feeling sorry for yurself. We have work to do, putz.

If you don’t want to be a Beav, just say so.

I’m a Beav to the end.

Bye, to the losers. You were always tolerated.

            Now, you’re just losers.

I like the level of concern you have for those you so easily identify as victims. It is impressive how you can smugly lecture, ridicule and then cast the victim aside once you’ve judged and deciphered the victim’s troubled soul. Well done Jack.

Once a douchebag, always a douchebag.

Do yourself a favor. Don’t wrestle with a pig. You get dirty and the pig just likes it.

            Jack’s an easy target

            ironic

You can try and counter any of it. You probably won’t get far, because your biases clearly color your logic outside your field of expertise. At least they have in the past.

Lazy, fear mongering language is just that. I’m not really addressing him, so much as I am responding to the hand up his backside that fills him with the fearfully dumb ideas.

          • lol… he’s a victim like I’m a billionaire.

victim mentality =/= victim, which is why it’s pathetic.

Your want the mentality to not be tosses aside, don’t make it up.

          • Buddy, you’re on a cold streak. Can you not see that your posts are getting a pretty icy reception from those on this forum? Your constant negativity got real old a long time ago….

          • lol… likes are irrelevant and lazy

If anyone wants to disagree, have the temerity to lay it out concisely. Don’t hide behind thumbs, like children.

          • The deal is that I don’t bring up politics, but if some tool feels the need to obey that hand up their ass and introduce really dumb political buzzwords/ideas, then it’s fair to point out both the tool and the idiocy of said dumb buzzwords/ideas.

          • We get it. Your ideas are better than everyone else’s and you have all the answers to politics (hence your need to interject). Your narcissism would make a you a perfect politician.

Jack’s pretty much right. You don’t sound like a very good Beaver fan. I for one am going to keep following the sporting pursuits of the school I very proudly call my alma mater no matter what happens next.
You sound no better, and maybe worse, than all the coaches and athletes that bailed on the university the past several months.

      • Thanks for the link, oob.
That article sure wasnt very encouraging.
“Beave top 3 receivers from a talent/star standpoint are either injured or questionable for next year…..but we ‘ve got some former walkons getting more reps, so there’s that”

          • He was injured during Spring ball, so hasn’t practiced yet. So he “could” play next season, as long as he rehabs that injury in time. How often does that work out in OSU’s favor?

“What happened this spring: For starters, let’s address a few issues with the roster. Darrius Clemons is listed as participating this spring, but only in the sense that he watched as the Michigan transfer recovers from an injury. It’s impossible to project Clemons as a starter until OSU coaches see what he can do during camp. Jimmy Valsin III also listed as participating, but he sustained a knee injury that could sideline him for the 2024 season.”

  128. Steven Kwan is having an amazing start to the season. Spent a little time injured, so he hasn’t played every game, but he’s currently hitting .380.
He needs several more games under his belt to counted among the stat leaders, but the highest average with 60+ at games this year is Arraez at San Diego hitting .327
Kwan has 39 games under his belt so far in 2024. Earning himself a nice contract extension right now

    • He has been terrific and is only in his third year, too. He has really developed into an elite leadoff man and an excellent defender. I always dread when the Mariners play Cleveland. Kwan will have 7-10 pitch at-bats; his eye and hand coordination skills are unreal.

Interesting article. It didn’t touch on what I think is the largest contributing factor. Swing mechanics are so much better with the aid of technology. Bazzanna is a great example of this and his visit to driveline.

Guys know their exit velos, how long their bat is in the zone, bat speed etc.

Kind of funny how in the MLB the tech aids pitching more than hitters but it’s the reverse at the college level.

We really are absolutely screwed when it comes to athletics. How can anyone continue to pour time and money into this mess when every talented player just leaves. Like bro wtf. How can anyone be happy as a fan when nobody wanted us. We already dealt with bias in media and officiating and now this?

  130. Big 12 rumored to be selling conference naming rights to Allstate for $30-50M/yr.

One possible name would be the Big Allstate Conference. This is some early 2000’s parody movie stuff. Money ruins everything.

OSU budget for 24-25 drops 8.8% ($99.7m – $91.6m) but stays far above G5 levels. Highest 23′ G5 budget was Air Force at $76.5m.

WSU drops from $85m – $74m which aligns them with the top tier of G5 schools (Air Force, SDSU, UNLV, Memphis, CSU, Fresno, etc.)

Somewhat surprised that it’s not a whole lot worse than it could have been for next year. August 1st can’t come soon enough.

Some top FY 2024 numbers for reference: OhioSt/Texas: $225m, Alabama $195m, Michigan $193m, Michigan State $156m, Oregon $140m,

Doomers are striking out as much as the Beavs did in May and June with no announced transfers yet from the starting baseball club.

Count me in with the devoted alumni that still finds reason to be excited for Beavs sports going forward. Bring on the downvotes, duck trolls.

If the WBB can lose everyone, so can the baseball team unfortunately.

The teams with the large NIL budgets for baseball are still playing. So watch out for them when their season ends.

      • anybody know what the portal window is for baseball?
I’m assuming it’s like football where the teams playing in the post season have their window start and end time extend out to whenever their season ends?

Its funny, Ive been around long enough to remember pre-Riley, when fans thought Oregon State couldn’t compete in the Pac-12 and should drop down to the Big Sky. I’ve heard it at times with hoops as well. Over the years, those fans have been proven wrong. OSU can and does compete with top programs in most sports. I think it will continue to compete as long as there are roster limits and a finite amount of playing time. Athletes are always going to want to compete and play. NIL money is fine, but playing time is probably something Beaver coaches can offer that other coaches can’t guarantee.
I also think the school provides a great academic and campus life experience for athletes that few schools can top.

    • Agreed. I understand both sides of the aisle. We may or not be going into rough times. You can continue to watch or just follow loosely (or not at all). Do as you wish and you don’t have to answer to anyone. At the end of the day we all still support the Beavs.

I think it’s funny Beavs are viewed as the little engine that could even though they have consistent top 20 programs in Gymnastics, Wrestling, Baseball, men’s soccer, and WBB. Sprinkle in a top twenty for MBB, FB, and softball every now and then, and the programs seem to be “punching above their weight” class even though we all it to be relatively normal….not a surprise at all. It’s the stuck-up schools (UW, UO, USC) that try to paint us as inferior, and try to act surprised whenever the Beavs beat them at anything….Beavs belong and should play at the top with anybody.

I will say baseball has a chance to reload as there are a lot of very good players out there in the portal who are willing to play for OSU for no NIL dollars.

Do you have a list of pitchers who have can get through 6 innings without walks, wild pitches and hit batters?
      That would be nice.

Also a list of great fielding infielders?

    • The number and quality of “players …in the portal who are willing to play for OSU for no NIL dollars” will decline along with the support of fans as we get farther away from the Casey days and ways.
      UNLESS Mitch changes his approach.
He can’t be best buds with players and expect Casey-like results.

Glad the site is back up. Was thinking it would be so Beavs like for the best blog to die right after our athletics programs as a whole rode off into the sunset.

Beavs win total at 7.5 for this year.

    Take the under folks.
