Baseball: Hartford @ Oregon State

Tonight's game was rained out. Monday's game was moved to Sunday as part of a second double header. Here is the updated start times for the weekend:

Date Opponent Location Time (PT)
03/04 Hartford (Rained out) Corvallis, Ore. ————–
03/05 Hartford (Double Header) Corvallis, Ore. 12:05 p.m.
03/05 Hartford (Double Header) Corvallis, Ore. 1:05 p.m.
03/06 Hartford (Canceled) Corvallis, Ore. ————–

Hartford has yet to play a game this season, but they aren't projected to be good. They're a young team comprised of 11 freshman (offset somewhat by 7 seniors). Their most experienced pitchers are sophomore Anthony Mannuccia and junior Mike Thatcher, who are slated to start games 1 and 2 versus Oregon State.

Expect the Beavers to take all 4 games. Hartford has been battling the elements and playing mostly indoor scrimmages. The Beavers, meanwhile, have competed in 8 meaningful games and have been practicing outdoors for months. That is a big advantage. Hartford also has to deal with the fatigue of cross country travel.

What I am looking for are some easy wins. The Beavs have been grinding games out, but at some point they need to put weak opponents away early. Anything less than a sweep should be considered a disappointment.

  1. Anyone know if there is going to be a bootleg video feed for the OSU/ASU game. I feel like torturing myself this afternoon!
In a pathetic way, I think CR should realize a road win and preventing a 20 loss season would be a worthy last goal for the season. I always felt that 20 losses is a pretty negative benchmark for a D-1 program. That could be a real possibility, but I doubt it changes anything in BDC’s mind.

  2. This rain is a big issue:

    1. The Beavs need to pad wins versus bad teams like Hartford. NCAA games are never made up, and to lose out on 4 wins could be the different between making the tournament.
    2. Double-headers neutralize guys like Susac who will now play 2 of 4 games instead of 3 (or possibly 4). I suppose he can and will DH, but even then I doubt we see him all 4 games.

There’s nothing to do about it, obviously, but the rain is a real bitch for baseball.

  3. Beavers lead 4-0 heading to the bottom of the second. They scored on a three run triple and an error in the first. Susac didn’t touch home plate when he scored the second run in the inning, umpire and Hartford players seemed unaware, somehow.

  4. Beavers lead 4-0 going to the bottom of the third. Sam Gaviglio is pitching well again. He has bounce back from a tough year last season to be unquestionable ace of the staff. He’s been dominant so far, hoping to see him keep it up.

  5. Sam G reminds me a bit of Greg Maddux. Natural, fluid windup and mechanics…good movement on his pitches. It’s nice being able to see these guys and not having to rely on broadcasters’ descriptions.

  6. After an RBI single by Brian Stamps, Carter hits an 3 run double and it’s 13-0 Beavers. This is the kind of game we’ve all been waiting for.

    • It’s alright for me. I did like how there wasn’t a play-by-play guy for the first inning, then they fixed the problem and he’s back, unfortunately.

  7. I’m liking the way the offense is performing now. The young hitters are coming along nicely now, plus the middle of the order is producing tremendously well consistently. Berberet and Susac are deadly right now. Both are the team’s best 2 hitters and have been crushing the baseball the last week or so. A series like this also gives the hitters a ton of confidence.

  8. And on cue Susac and Berberet hit 2 balls extremely hard for back-to-back doubles to make it 5-1. Berberet almost got it out for a home run. He’s on fire right now

      • I will have to check out Hartford on occassion this year on D-1 baseball to see how they do. Their pitching is really unimaginative and just plain bad (watch they will shut down the Beavs tomorrow)!

    • Respect inferior opponents, guys, and just be glad the Beavers are handling their business. This series should be 4 easy wins, and so far things are going as they should, which is a rare occasion for a Beaver fan. Let’s enjoy it instead of bashing Hartford’s best effort–I respect these guys for flying across the country to play a national power. That can’t be easy…mentally or physically.

I think if the Beavers complete the sweep they’ll be ranked come Monday.

  9. Oregon loses 7-6 in 12 innings. They blew a 5 run 9th inning lead to Long Beach State. They’re 5-5 now on the season. Not gonna lie I like how they’re struggling this season.

      • Yeah, he will only hit every once in a while. Casey wants to him to focus on being a pitcher. Next year he more hit more but for now he’s strictly a pitcher.

    • Lost to the “Dirt Bags”. Don’t think they will be able to hold on to the ranking much longer, but they will be gunning for the Beavs.
It would be a sweet week of sports if the Beavs could somehow win both of the Civil Wars.

      • Both? They aren’t playing Oregon in basketball. Beavers should handle Oregon Tuesday due to the fact that they’re just better. Starting rotations are about equal, but the bullpen and offense are wildly in the Beavers favor. Beavers even if behind late, know they can come back against a very weak Oregon bullpen. I expect Oregon State to handle them Tuesday but Oregon will put up a tough fight and make it close, but the Beavers will win. It should be a fun game though.

Beavers should be ranked come tomorrow.

        • I agree.
I expect something like a 5-4 Beav win in that game.

The Beavs do not want to give up state supremacy. Even in the midst of their slide last year they found a way to sweep the Ducks. I’m a bit nervous about Booser pitching that game–he hasn’t thrown in a while, and has 1 career start. That’s the wildcard.

          • That is actually going to be Cam’s third start but he should be more confident at home. Young pitchers always seem to pitch better at home. Thing with Oregon struggling is, if the Beavers jump out to a 4-0 lead or so, Oregon will get down on themselves with the struggles they’ve been having at the plate. So the Beavers just need to put 4 runs or so in the first three innings and the game could be over.

          • They do but Oregon is the #7 team now and OSU is still #9. It’s probably a good thing USC beat UW so the Beavers get Stanford. Losing to Oregon three times in the same season would be brutal.

          • Probably because the Huskies team is filled with douche bags. They’ve underachieved tremendously. They have a ton of talent but can’t win the regular season title? Romar just isn’t that great of a coach. He’s better than Craig but they underachieve every year.

  10. James Nygren to start game 1. This sends a clear message Casey believes he can beat these guys with a Grade-C pitcher. Booser pushed back to Tuesday versus the Ducks. I think this is a risky move. Smarter move would be to pitch Booser today, get the sweet, then throw Boyd at the Ducks.

Nygren is a bad pitcher, and will lose this game. That means 3-1 at the best, and who knows, maybe the Beavs start to feel the pressure and get swept in game 2.

The move is an error. I’d like to go on the record and say that before the first pitch is thrown.

    • I don’t buy it as that bad of a move. Beavers want to win Tuesday so they moved Cam there. Also, Hartford is a bad pitching team and isn’t that good of a hitting team, so the Beavers will be fine. I highly doubt Hartford limits the Beavers to less than 7 or 8 runs in either game. Nygren isn’t a good pitcher but he won’t be giving up 6 or 7 runs today. The Beavers will win both easily. I’m not trying to be disrespectful towards Hartford, but they’re a really bad team and I just can’t seem them winning a game today.

      • “Beavers want to win Tuesday so they moved Cam there. ”

Since when is Cam Booser Addie Joss?
He’s started one game, and was average (4.2in/2runs).

How does it not make more sense to start Boyd over Nygren, or Booser over Nygren and Boyd on Tuesday. You feel better with Nygren going today than either of those scenarios???

        • Well it’s clear Casey isn’t going to use Boyd as a starter. He looks to be strictly a bullpen guy and so Casey isn’t starting him. So it was between Nygren and Booser. Who do you want to start against Oregon? I say the latter is much better. If Boyd had the opportunity to start I would say start Booser today and Boyd Tuesday, unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be an option.

          • I went with Joss because I think he pitched to the lowest ERA in MLB history (something like 1.19 one year)…I think??! I am trying to dig up info from waaay back in my mind…from reading books on the turn of the century guys as a kid.

          • Nope Tim Keefe has the lowest ERA but that was in 1880. Dutch Leonard has the best ERA in MLB history since 1900. Addie Joss is 8th.

          • I believe there were two Dutch Leonard’s (one around the turn of the century, and one in the 30s). The one from the turn of the century had a really short career, but put up a good ERA. Is that the guy you’re talking about?

I know Tim Keefe from playing Diamond Mind Baseball and Classic Fantasy. The sabermetricians don’t think highly of him. He always gets rocked when you put him in modern era leagues.

I think Joss had the lowest era in a single season (I remember it being under 1.20, which I found mind-boggling). Not sure, all of this is from memory so I could be way wrong.

          • It was Dutch Leonard from 1914 of the Boston Red Sox. His ERA for the season was .96. Bob Gibson has the lowest ERA since 1918 with a 1.12 ERA. They of course changed the height of the mound because he was so dominant.

  11. Well, damn, now I am getting all excited about turn of the century ball and want to discuss Cap Anson’s “inside-the-doghouse-homerun”

Did anyone here used to play Classic Fantasy Baseball on ESPN? Know what DL Fans is?? How I miss it.

      • Oh yeah, that came out right after Classic Fantasy Baseball and DLFans collapsed. I tried it once, but didn’t like it, so I bought Diamond Mind (PC software) and created my own league simulations. It’s good. The downside is I liked going head to head versus owners, and it’s harder to do that. I got my national ranking to ~120 (out of 6000). Man, that was a great game. ESPN said there wasn’t enough demand and it folded. I find that hard to believe since one team cost $50, and ~6000 people were playing it. I bought over 25 teams alone. I guess server space cost more back then, but still…MEH.

  12. Beavers starting to jump all over this starting pitcher of Hartford. Beavers up 4-1 with runners on second and third in the bottom of the second

  13. Heya… haven’t checked in here since the football season ended. Hope all y’all are doing well. I noticed earlier today that baseball season was going and started missing it (I was a junior and senior at OSU the years we won in Omaha). Anyways, I just paid for the month pass at osubeavers.com to watch all the game, and am gonna be a good little beaver baseball fan for the rest of the season.

In the meanwhile, since I’m a very lazy beaver, would any of you be so kind as to give me a recap of the season thus far and some season projections (we going to the college world series?).

    • Offense started slow with a lot of young guys but thanks to guys like Andrew Susac and Parker Berberet the offense has picked it up now. Sam Gaviglio is their ace on the mound and has dominated. Pitching staff looks good. Starting two true freshman who have struggled a little at times but appear to be getting better. Team is 7-3 so far. Not too likely they will be in the College World Series but they’re capable of hosting a Regional and you never know what happens from there. They can go on a run in the NCAA Tournament if their offense continues to improve. Pitching will be there just need the offense to go with it. Of course hosting a Regional would help.

      • Let me clarify some of these points.

Much of what BB said has to do with opponents. The Beavs offense was terrible versus the good staffs they’ve faced (Fresno, UConn). They’ve exploded against Hartford’s weak staff. The verdict is still out. Tuesday against Oregon will be a good gauge to see if they’ve truly improved on offense.

One big positive is the bullpen’s young arms appear to be better than last year’s veterans.

    • “Beavers already losing. Nygren is trash. Beavers still got this but Nygren is terrible as usual.”

      Make up your mind, man.

Nygren is horrible…luckily Hartford is worse.

      • Haha I know. Hartford is making him look decent, which of course means Pat Casey want to pitch him more, unfortunately. If he pitched against a good offensive team he would’ve been yanked in the third inning.

  14. Later in the year Osich won’t have a pitch count limit and it will be interesting to see how he continues to progress. He could provide a nice 1-2 punch with Gaviglio. When Osich is on he’s damn near unhittable.

  15. Wow. Andrew Susac just crushes a baseball in left center field for a three run home run. He looks like he’s gonna have a monster season.

    • He had like 2 at-bats yesterday. He hardly plays anymore, I can’t figure out why. He has the talent, so he should be playing more.

        • No, he did have some good swings just couldn’t find some holes. He doesn’t play much partly due to the fact that Pat Casey is obsessed with playing a walk-on, Max Gordon. Max Gordon has 2 hits all season, both coming today, don’t see why Gordon should ever start over Poyer.

  16. Beavers have struggled today. They’ve only scored 22 runs between the 2 games. They’ve outscored Hartford 52-7 in the series

  17. The wins are nice, but the Beavs still only have two victories versus teams with a winning record. That won’t improve even with a W on Tuesday versus Oregon.

They were ranked in the 40s last week. It will be interesting to see if that goes up after the sweep. You’d think so, but Hartford was so bad it might actually go down. Hey, at least the wins built some confidence in the young guys.

The Beavs have a bunch of weak opponents coming up. After Oregon, the next decent test will be Long Beach State on the 18th.

    • Their wins will look a lot better in about a week. UConn has won 3 in a row and is starting to click. They just beat SDSU in San Diego and beat a Cal team who had looked like one of the Pac-10’s best. Gonzaga has won 4 in a row and is beginning to play good baseball. Indiana has played decently this season. Right now the wins don’t look great but they will look better in the near future.

I don’t mind the soft schedule in the non conference the rest of the way. It should build confidence with the team getting on a roll. I think they can be 22-3 heading into Pac-10 play and their confidence should be sky high.

Also, the Beavers should be ranked, no way they drop though.

  18. Looks like the Beavers-Ducks will be good weather tonight. Sunny in Corvallis so that’s good they’re able to play tonight. Now it’s time for the Beavers to go out and get this win and get a decent non conference win. Oregon will eventually be decent this season, they can’t suck forever. So that would be a nice win on the “resume”
