Baseball: Oregon State @ Cal

The game has been moved to noon (from 2:30) due to inclement weather.

The matchup is Ben Wetzler (3-0, 4.70) vs Justin Jones (2-1, 4.05).

Beavs are 26-31 all-time at Cal. They swept there last year, but only 7 guys remain on the roster. Cal is 11-4 so far this year and have a good team. This will be a tough series if the pitching doesn't show up.

  1. We’ll win the series. In fact, I think we buckle down this week.

How can Casey think that Conforto and Davis aren’t the bee’s knees?

Then again, I sure didn’t think they would amount to anything. Gee golly and neat-o! I didn’t even know who they were. Heck-o-mighty… I thought since they weren’t drafted in the first two rounds that they didn’t tell every scout possible that they were coming to OSU come hell or high water. They must have been completely missed by those pro scout types.

    Gee golly yeah….

    Dontcha know?

    • Jack, sometimes you confuse me. Do you have a personality disorder? Sometimes you have deep thinking well informed and educated posts. Sometimes they are like this.

      • Do these confuse you?

Because I could have fun with just that.

I sometimes think in three or four planes. Maybe this is one of those times.

Baseball is pretty solid on stats and numbers. I don’t think I want to devolve the game beyond the statistical fantasy I created when I was ten.

Or did I just bore the population again?

I promise that’s anything but true in real life.

I think I like to walk on the beach and make someone somewhere think highly of me…

        What was I saying?

  2. I think the Beavers take 2 of 3 but all the games will be tight. Hopefully Wetzler can build off last Friday’s win start and develop consistency and be that top of the rotation guy. He has the stuff, just needs consistency. I’m interested to see how Child and Fry do. Child has been really good his last two starts, a little step up in competition in Cal, hopefully he keeps up the good pitching and be a good #2/#3 guy for the Beavers. He has an electric fastball, he has a chance to be really good this season. Loved what I saw out of Jace Fry his last start, I assume his pitch count will be around 75-80 this start, hopefully they can get 5-6 innings out of him and not have to bring in the bullpen too soon. He’s got a great arm, I expect big things from him.

Conforto and Davis have been awesome so far. If they continue to have a solid approach at the plate they will put up some big numbers. Hard to believe they’re just freshman. Those guys in a couple years are going to be insane. Once Keyes gets going this offense is going to score a lot of runs. Keyes is too good of a hitter to continue struggling like he is. He will figure things out. When he gets hot and you put him with Smith, Conforto, Davis, Dunn, Rodriguez and Barnes, the offense is gonna look so damn good.

First time in a while you can really say 1-8 in the order the Beavers are really stacked with great average hitters and a bunch of hitters with pop. It adds a dynamic that Casey simply hasn’t had the last few years. This team has the ability to string together big innings at any time. It is great to see.

Let’s see the Beavers get off to a good start in conference play!

    • I so much agree with Conforto and Davis. Those two have been alll that since before the season. Then we add Smith, Jake, and somebody (?) in the outfield….

What do we have to lose?

I have more…. I just don’t need to say more.

    • Good rundown, GB90 (BB).
      Two thoughts here,
      1) All hitters encounter slumps and it will be so with Conforto and Davis. There will be times when 1-8 are hitting for good avg, but sometime this season guys like Keyes, Dunn, etc will have to pick up the slack.
      2) Recently Casey phrased a concept in a way I hadn’t heard, “Defense and Pitching win games, hitting just determines by how much”

  3. Quick Poll: What is the root cause of Jack’s recent barrage of seemingly random posts?

    1.) Tourette Syndrome
    2.) Dementia
    3.) Stroke
4.) little Jasonthebeaver has hijacked his account
    5.) other

  4. Just read the O-live columns on the girls victory in the WNIT and Casey’s comments about going into the Cal series. I was struck by the common thread…..these two give specific examples of the good AND bad in the performance by their teams. There is very little of the “we’ve got to try to find our identity” type of pap we get from others.

Gals play St Mary’s Saturday night, a rematch which should be a real barn burner!

  5. Official release:

BERKELEY, Calif. – The 25th-ranked Oregon State baseball team’s Pac-12 Conference opener against California has been rained out. The game, scheduled for noon Friday, will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday at Evans Diamond.

Game one Saturday is scheduled for noon. Game two will be played shortly after the completion of game one.

Sunday’s series finale is set for noon.

Each of the three games will be available on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com). For a full listing of stations, visit the baseball page on osubeavers.com.

  6. Probably a good thing we didn’t play today. It was a bad day for the favorite in the P12. WSU blanks zona 6-0, UCLA over forks 6-5, dawgs pound ducks 8-3 and Utah takes two from SC 1-0 and 3-1.

  7. It was Beaver vs Gopher in wrestling at NCAA’s in the HWT semis. Gopher won.

Some great games in the dance. Did anyone else notice the size of several of the Lehigh cheerleaders? Huge! And to clarify, I’m referring to the female ones. I think I’ve found our missing DT’s for the football team.

  8. Remmers had four offside penalties at the OSU pro day………………… “Neat.”

Also provided proof that he is weak AND slow. Sounds like a perfect LT. More evidence of
why we sucked the last couple years.

  9. I don’t know why but I just bought tickets for the TCU Monday. I swore after the W. Illinois debacle that I was done. Hurry there are only about 9,000 seats left!!

PS: beavergopher.. I saw your request to wear a loud shirt so you could pick me out. No need… I’m easy to spot in a small crowd. Look for; goofy glasses, wide white belt and shiny white patent leather loafers. I haven’t updated my look since 1995.

    • Oh I am sooo sorry to post that here, SORRY SORRY please don’t HATE on me! I will never post anything like that again. I don’t want to be blacklisted! You have definitely taught me a lesson I didn’t realize that post was something you didn’t care about, I will try to post more about how my life is crap and I wear white belts and white loafers still, or whether I bought a ticket to a basketball game! Just don’t Message Board embarass me again, please!!

  10. He got destroyed by the #10 seed from Northwestern whose team was just ahead of us in the standings, might fall from the Top 10.

  11. ? @OSU_Wrestling
The Beavers are still in 10th place heading into the championship matches. Penn State, Minnesota, Iowa, Cornell & OK State are top-5.

    • I follow it beaverkman. Kid I went to high school with won a couple NCAA titles and an Olympic gold. Minn has a great program, but Pen State too tough this year. Great showing by the Beavers! Embrace a sport with an upside for our school fellow Angrybeavs! We know we will have arrived when the Ducks restart their program

And to those who say it is just a bunch of sweaty people grabbing each others crotches I say. Isn’t that the premise of every show with the Kardashians?

  12. Went to both Thursday NCAA sessions at the Rose Garden and one thing is apparent, the Beavs need a good center to go anywhere in the tournament next year. Burton can’t compete with how athletic most of the centers are.
Also, Indiana has so much depth on the team that playing only 6 or 7 will not be enough to go very deep.
We know what we got returning, but if we don’t get additional help from the recruits coming in, it may be an early exit next year.
It only takes 2-3 good players to turn a program around and CR needs to deliver.

    • Sounds like Rodriguez should have handled that throw to prevent run #2 and get the third out. Wetzler?….doesn’t he always start out weak?

        • Seems like last time out he was shakey for first couple innings, guess that was not typical for him. Certainly not as weak as today.

  13. Beavers lead Cal 7-2 after 7 innings. Wetzler has pitched a strong 7 innings. Last 6 innings he’s given up just 3 hits and no runs. Really bounced back from a tough first inning to put in a really good performance.

  14. Guess we can’t confirm Wetzler stinks yet. He was fairly hittable, but that was a quality start versus a the first good team he has faced.

  15. Wetzler retires Cal in order. 8 innings, 4 strikeouts, 6 hits and 2 runs. Really stepped up today. I wonder what his pitch count is, would like to see him finish this game off and save all the guys in the bullpen for game 2.

  16. Being a Beaver fan you have to find something to complain about… 13 LOB!

    Other scores–Dawgs blank ducks 5-0, had a 4 run 1st.

  17. Add it up, Cal errors, Child pitches out at just the right time, first game results….the mental state of the Bears has to be shaken. Only their good pitching is gonna keep them in the fight. Beavs have got to pile on and put this away before the rain enters into the result.

  18. Dunn makes a smart move to get a runner rounding second, Rodgriguez digs out a low pitch to throw out a runner at third. These guys are keeping their heads in the game, they both have made some mistakes, but not for lack of smarts or effort. What a contrast to the lack of focus and effort often seen on the FB field.

  19. Beaver offense needs to get it going. They lead 3-1 but they’re gonna need some more runs. Offensively they’ve struggled a bit against Flemer outside of Dunn’s home run.

  20. Casey jaws w/ump over hit batter, I love his competitiveness. What a contrast to what we see from the FB staff.
I’m really preachin’ to the choir today!

  21. Great start from Child today. 8 innings, 4 hits, 6 strikeouts and no earned runs. 1 run allowed was unearned because of a Tyler Smith error. DH has gone about as well as Pat Casey could have hoped.

  22. Childs left in to start 9th, finished 8th strong so makes sense. Bryant is ready and should be brought in sooner rather than later.

  23. Impressive two games. Not much to complain about other than three more errors/bad fielding. Beavs need to re-lace their gloves.

    • Don’t sell yourself short angry, you can find fault in everything OSU and usually do. Some day you will realize this is college not MLB and the Beaver opponents commit several errors as well. Today Cal made errors and bonehead baserunning. Last week after one game you thought OSU were a bottom feeder in the Pac 12 and Wetzler was pond scum. You so let the moment cloud the big picture. But I’m sure you will come back with some witty comment like Jack thinking you have won the day.

      You really are negative.

      Let the justification begin chump

      • OSU is an athletics disaster, so there are obvious faults.
I never said OSU’s baseball team were bottom feeders (picked them 35th in the preseason and said they could move higher). Wetzler hasn’t won me over. Dude was bad last year, and bad most of this year. Sure you’re not the one missing the bigger picture? I could make idiotic comments about how and why you’re too positive and nothing more than a vapid cheerleader.

        • Define disaster. Compared to who, Oregon, the rest of the Pac 12 or all of the NCAA. Certain sports, just football, just mens or $$$.

Dig deep in that negative brain of depression and hate and lets hear it all.

          • if you hate his blog so much maybe you should read a different one instead of telling him why you think he sucks. that way you won’t come across so douchey

          • Most people don’t care about gymnastics, grappling, or baseball. It’s cool we’re good at those (especially baseball), but there have been historical failures in both men’s sports.
            a. 28 years
            b. longest NCAA tourney drought
I mean, these are epic fails. Are both up from the bottom? Yes. Are they where they need to be? Nope.

  24. Wetzler and Child pitched really well today. Both went 8 innings. Beavers starting pitching is really beginning to come along. Looking forward to Fry’s start tomorrow. A sweep over the Bears would be big and give the guys a ton of confidence heading into another really tough series against the Wildcats next weekend at Goss.

    • Congrats Beavers. This is great. OSU has a strong program, along with Casey the best coach at OSU. With limit resources compared to Big 10 County and the East the Beavers have real success.

Complain about this angry. No national title in a sport many don’t appreciate. Get em.

  25. If you accept the premise that sports are for entertainment and enjoyment then this website, as a subset, of sports fulfills that definition.

Angry deserves a lot a credit of allowing all types of divergent personalities to express themselves here. It’s always interesting to check-in and see what’s going on…. a few people need to develop a thicker skin when they are singled out for individual attention. JB

PS: to little JasontheBeaver.. I hear you are going for your driver’s license test tomorrow. Good luck. Remember you are taking on a lot of responsibility!

    • you’re a good dude mr pettibonehead. i;m glad you’ve started to contribute other then making the same joke over and over again.

      • Thanks.. fist bump.

PBH was intended as a one time deal. Jack kept pouring gasoline on the fire so I had no choice, when challenged, but to respond. He served up some irresistible material. PBH went places I had never imagined at the outset, but your’e right, he was ready for retirement.

Maybe a brief reprise in the fall when the Riley’s annual comedy of errors begins??? JB

    • JB, that’s the best post you’ve ever made. Out of nowhere! See, I can like THAT JB.
Now just because I’ve encouraged you don’t stray from that kind of insightful, contributory thinking.
We’ll get past this inexplicable hatred you have for me.

  26. @ anti angry- maybe you should try contirbuting to the site’s content in a relative way (i.e. talk about beaver athletics) rather than just bitch and moan about it. or start your own blog since you thnk angry’s so shitty at it.

  27. ? @Beaver_Baseball Today’s lineup: Gordon-CF, Smith-SS, Conforto-LF, Davis-RF, Barnes-1B, Wetzler-DH, Rodriguez-C, Tommasini-2B, Fry-LHP. #gobeavs

add Dunn to the five hole.

How cool would it be if Fry just dominated the Bears lineup? Is it too early in his career to expect that?

  28. Pettibonehead is and has always been the funniest commenter here. Pretty much laugh at every comment he makes. Never understand why people got upset with him going after JackBeav–that was pretty hilarious banter.

  29. Looking at next years football schedule and trying to get out to Corvallis for a game.

Do any of the posters have a tailgating spots?
Is school in session for the first game?
Is the band up and running for the first game?
Why the first game? I’ve been to one game every year the last four years and they have lost every
one! I must be a good luck charm. I would think they should win that one, but Sac State is still fresh in my memory.

    • School isn’t in session, and the band is usually an alumni band. It is usually good short sleeve weather though. There’s plenty of Tailgating I don’t know where the best places are. We tailgate in Avery Park, which is a medium walk to the stadium.
