  1. WT is growing on me more as I watch his interviews on youtube. I suggest everyone go do that. He could be an under the radar Altman type hire.

I think we’ll see teams that are prepared and coached at the very least.

      • Weren’t Oregon fans disappointed with the hire, though? Maybe I am remembering it wrong, but I thought there were some sexier names floating around and Altman was considered disappointing to fans.

        • He ws also a solid hire. It was just the media circus involved with going after big name coaches who weren’t going anywhere that mad anything a disappointment. I think they made a good hire at the time. 20/20 hindsight tells me otherwise. I would hate the fluctuation in the roster with all the transfers and his inability to develop high level talent beyond their HS play. But he does coach a cohesive unit after all is sorted out.

  2. C’mon Angry, just having a little fun with a guy’s name. Just go with the flow. You’re not immune to it. I remember seeing “Langsdork” referred to in your past posts.

    • At least Langsdork is somewhat creative! The guy’s name is Tinkle and we’re talking about him peeing?
Alright, I will go with the flow [of Wayne’s Tinkle].

      • Langsdork is creative? It consists of changing one letter. One obvious letter at that.

Back to your other topic. I watched some of WT’s youtube videos and agree with you that he might be an under the radar hire. I liked the motto he gave his team. “When urine it, urine it to win it!”

  3. The pee jokes are definitely old at this point. Give it a rest – they aren’t funny.
I am excited about the hire. I have had some knowledge of WT and his family for a few years and I think this will be great for OSU.

    • I agree. I think he would have been a great hire when Miller retired. He’s that type of coaching talent… under the radar but solid.

Time will tell whether or not he makes us viable again. I think he will within three to four years. I would have settled for a transitive coach who would have taken what CR has done and added winning to the formula. But I can get behind a coach who is in it for the long haul as well.

I guess time will tell on the last part as well. But I do think Tinkle can be a stable hire for a generation if he gets his assistants.

  4. Well said:
    http://college-basketball.si.com/2014/05/19/oregon-state-hires-wayne-tinkle-head-coach/

I am really disappointed with the perception that we have a dearth of talent. We have some really really good players on our roster. And the incoming talent is better than anything we’ve seen in 25 years. CR, for all his faults, left us in a really good place.

If our 2014 class stays in place, Tinkle has a good chance to be successful in year one. The talent is inexperienced, but his strengths make the roster and incoming more than good.

    • I think people have that perception because they’re imagining CR “coaching them” (i.e. the players running around randomly and not improving game to game). IMO, TW bumps the roster up a notch.

CR got us a practice facility, too. He was a poor coach, but he at least got that done. He has that over all the deadbeat coaches before him.

    • It’s lazy journalism for writers to look and see that the Beavs lost so many seniors/juniors and assume that all the talent left. I really hope that we can get Cooke back because he is going to be a star.

      • I don’t know on Cooke. I’ve written him off, so keeping him would be a bonus. I think he’s a Steve Kerr type player who would fit any roster well. But he’s not a transcendent talent. Malcolm has a much better handle, slashes better and only slightly shoots worse. LMW can be spectacular if he’s allowed to play freely in the mid-range… and he can shoot from the perimeter as well.

Cooke seemed limited to the perimeter, and he couldn’t create as much as I had hoped. But when that boy gets hot from outside there is no stopping him. I will always take someone like that.

        • That being said, what I think of Cooke’s game may only be what CR allowed him to do. He might be a completely different player under another coach. And that may be what he’s looking for.

          • Cooke is still a possibility. Still enrolled at OSU. Saw on Twitter today that he was on a flight to Eugene from wherever he spent his weekend. Maybe it’s just to finish the term, but also I’ve read that Tinkle is meeting with players Monday and Tuesday before his press conference Wednesday.

            Hallice Cooke ?@Hallywood_3 3h

Finally gotta window seat ???? wheels up to Eugene. #onaflightfullofduckfans #stillreppinOSUfromheadtotoe

        • I don’t have my hopes up about him coming back either but one can hope. I really wish that the young bigs could have gotten a little more playing time last year.

          • Wouldn’t it be interesting if Tinkle managed to keep him? The advertised reasons for his transfer may have contributed to the current class not bolting two weeks ago. Whether he stays or goes, he may have contributed more to the program than any of us realizes.

          • That’s what I was saying back when the news first hit that he was transferring. He was a more effective AD than Bob DeCarolis and we should be thanking Cooke for getting the ball rolling by forcing Bob’s hand.

          • Absolutely. BDC didnt move on the womens program til players bolted. And Cooke’s bolting clearly got Bobby rethinking his daze regarding CR.

    • What are the odds that the class stays together?

I’ve heard that Manderson, Baker, and GPII are willing to talk to Tinkle fefore making their decisions… But Manderson did request a release. Haven’t heard anything about Cam Oliver.

Nick Faust reopened his recruitment as far as 2015 goes so I’m guessing he is gone.

      • I think you’re right about Faust. I think Baker is solid. I think Manderson and Oliver will be solid once they get to talk to Tinkle. His style really plays to their talents well.

Really no idea on GPII… how much GP had to do with the Tinkle hire… etc. He would fit in Tinkle’s system very well, especially if the two incoming bigs join the two existing bigs.

I think the three lost in the change might be Reid, Olaf and Robbins. There’s a place for Reid since he has shown a tendency to play some D. But the other two need to step it up or find another system.

      • That would suck to lose Manderson. Dude has like 20 scholarship offers and Tinkle will probably run offense through the bigs. Dude could play right away and be effective. Hope he realizes it.

    • Who are you high on from the current roster??

Cooke was the lone promising player returning IMO. LMW is pretty MEH and Robbins doesn’t know how to assert himself. The rest of the guys just are barely Pac 12 caliber.

Baker and Oliver both look good as incoming freshman if they stay on. But still this team will be very bad next year.

  5. I think this transition in Beaver basketball can be summed up as follows:

    CR = coaching incompetence

    Tinkle = coaching incontinence

  6. Hopefully DeCarolis will realize he’s peaked in his career with the hiring of Tinkle and the way he handled the timing of the firing of CR and will retire now.

        • Well, given the way he screws the pooch every so often, and the fact that he must know he does, he should make an effort to retire on an up swing….. or he takes that grave risk of getting canned on a low one.

          • Why would you think that???? DeCareless has made a few horrible plays and still kept his job. I’d start at the top with Ed Ray

  7. Did bobby step on his dick yet again? Lucky just posted this over on Pure Orange.

    ——————–
Did someone located in the Portland area jump the gun on an announcement

Is the deal not done yet?
If it is done, why are we going to Montana?
Maybe more negotiating left to do?
Maybe not all of the required interviews have been completed?
Did the Regents make a decision, but forgot to ask Tinkle yet?
Awfully quiet at the Ath Dept.

    • I wish this WT deal had been completed a couple of days ago just to see if he might have been able to get Cooke to change his mind. Now we’ll never know.

Oh well, F’ it – PLAY BALL.

    • I love that Casey has it down to five pitchers. Wetz and Fry plus Moore, Schultz and Davis should be enough for an epic run. It’s a little early, but what are we left with for next year? I think we’ll be good at P, but the bats are what worry me.

Something to worry about on a future date.

      • Rain delay on Sunday – Casey didn’t care for the way the ground crew was distributing the whatever-that-stuff-is, and started doing it himself.

      • Hendrix, Ice, Morrison, Hamilton are all locks to be starting in the same spots next year. I guess Clark is our best option for 1B as of now. Howard looks to be in place for an outfield spot but i’d like to see him make better contact. The recruiting class coming in is very talented but unproven obviously. The Beavs will have lot’s of talented arms next year but aside from Moore will be pretty inexperienced. This is the year to win it all.

      • I never thought we’d take the series with our 3 & 4 hitters going without an RBI for the weekend so I’ll leave next years hitting worries for the off season.

  8. I’ve been wondering something for awhile since Craig Robinson was fired. Does anyone here expect a coach who has been fired to make some sort of statement publicly to either the players, fans, etc? I just think it’s weird how silent Robinson has been. Maybe I am being optomistic, but I guess I would expect some generic statement like “Thank you for your support the past x amount of years, thank you to the players, I wish OSU well.” It would have been a classy thing to do, nonetheless.

My realtor friend says that his house isn’t even for sale yet and their office has actually gotten a couple of inquiries from clients about wanting to buy it. I would have listed it and gotten out of dodge, personally.

    • many fired coaches send a msg. When Tubby Smith was fired from Minn he sent this msg, “I want to thank the University of Minnesota and the people of Minnesota for giving me the opportunity to lead the Golden Gopher basketball program for six years,” Smith said. “Our staff did things the right way and will leave knowing that the program is in far better shape than when we arrived. The people of the State of Minnesota embraced Donna and me from the beginning and we will always be grateful.”

      • He also claimed he was fired because of his age 9 months later. To use a Navy term, he was ROAD.
Retired on active duty. He was going through the motions and making big coin doing it.

    • Doesn’t bother me. It’s not required since he was fired. Had he left for another job, then yes, a statement would be appropriate.

    • “thank you for your support?” Perhaps at the end of the 2nd year but not since then. He could easily be bitter given the way BDC mismanaged CR’s time at OSU. And 4 BDC to phone him when, as I understand it, he was on a recruiting trip rather than waiting for his return to fire him. It’s unfortunate that CR simply couldn’t figure out how to coach, wouldn’t listen to anyone who could, and wouldn’t , when he had the chance to take on someone who could help, didn’t.

  9. Coach Tinkle is on his way to Corvallis on a Cessna Citation V registered to Roaring Springs Ranch in Aurora. N398RS is the tail number…will be in CVO around 1:22 p.m.

  10. I believe the Big Sky Champion has an automatic seed to the NCAA tourney. So, to me, it is nothing to brag about that Tinkle got to the tourney several times because all he had to do was be the the best in the Big Sky. In fact, he did not even have to be the best in the Big Sky….

    • Still, he was the best. I think Payne made it at ECU with a freak tourney run to get the worst team ever into the dance.

And then we hired him. some six years later… after he had done nothing else.

Tinkle has sustained success at a low/mid-major. That’s not an easy thing to do. If it was, everyone would do so.

  11. THIS JUST IN! Investigation reveals that the hiring of Wayne Tinkle was a sinister plot engineered by Mama Muchado and designed to destroy the AngryBeavs website. Research had revealed the tendency of AB members to lapse into childish fart and piss jokes if given even the slightest suitable input. RIP, Angry Beavs…..sigh..

  12. I like to plan long term, if he’s successful in Corvallis, he’s going go further up the coaching food chain, right? At 48 he has time and why else take this job?

If he gets the Beavs to the tourney it’s one of the stories of the year and bigger programs will come calling.

If he’s not successful he gets fired in 5 years like all of the others.

    Yes, I’m a downer.

  13. I’d imagine more of these messages will be trickling in as the day goes by.

    Wayne Tinkle ?@waynetinkle 30m

So thrilled to announce that 6’3″ guard Chai Baker is more excited than ever to be coming to OSU! #BeaverNation
