Oregon State at Washington

367

Tomorrow at 6pm. Feel free to discuss recruiting in this thread until then (I’m curious to see a complete list of weekend visitors, if anyone has it).

I’m putting the thread up a day early because I’m really digging the way these guys play.

A nice writeup here from the official site with tidbits.

This is an interesting five game stretch against some of the weaker teams this year: Washington, Washington State, UCLA, USC, ASU (before facing Arizona again). The way the Beavs are playing defense, they could theoretically win all of those.

The lady Beavs (redundant?) are 9th in the AP after dismantling Oregon. I declare 2015 the year of the Beaver.

  1. Guys will need to approach this game like the AZ game. The team is going to be taken a lot more seriously by opponents after beating AZ.

    Keys –
    1. UW is pretty bad at shooting the deep ball. .234 3pt % in conference play. That means the Beavs should stay with their 2-3 zone most of the game. Do not let the ball inside early. But don’t sag so much that UW gets open looks at the 3.
    2. If UW gets the ball inside. Make them tough shots or foul them hard. Their two leading big men, Kemp and Upshaw are both below 60% from the FT line. Both guys have FG% above 60% in conference.
    3. Offensively, keep working until the high percentage shot comes. Teams are still pressing full court so being able to break the press consistently will be key.

It’s really more of the same. Play good defense, rebound and limit turnovers. Beavs have done a good job of not chasing the play and staying in position.

  2. So, who’s visiting this weekend? I’ve heard:

Jay Irvine – He named us his leader in December.
Treston Decoud – We lead for him, a couple more trips after OSU though.
Taylor Thomas – Committed to Utah, but he removed that from his twitter profile, may be open to us again.
Sheldrick Redwine – Committed to Louisville, may not be coming after all, haven’t heard confirmation.

I think Irvine and Decoud will commit, possibly this weekend. I think Thomas is 50/50.

  3. I’m still checking Mizell for her profiles on the new coaching staff. Here’s an excerpt on Baldwin, whose biggest football influence is Jack Elway:

“My coaching style in three words: High-energy. Enthusiastic. Demanding.

I wanted to come to OSU because … Gary Andersen is the intriguing part about it. I was fortunate enough to work for him at Utah State, and he was such an incredible guy to work for. When I look back at it, I ask myself why I left. I made a mistake when I went to Colorado State. It was definitely, I thought, an opportunity to go in a different direction, and sometimes you make mistakes. I worked for a guy that had worked for me, and I knew after I’d been there a year and a half I had made a mistake. I said, “If I ever got the opportunity and Gary would hire me again, I would pursue that.”

After the new staff secures their commitments and knows what kind of roster it has to work with, I anticipate we’ll hear more from the coaches on schemes and player roles.

BREAKING: Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will announce that he’ll forgo senior season & enter NFL draft. (via @mortreport)

    • Not a surprise, but I kind of wish he’d come back.

Be fun for OSU to beat him in Autzen next year…oh well. “Next man up” as they say at UO….

    • TBH, this is probably the best time for him to go. Tampa Bay is far from a great organization, but they’re also pretty stable.

Now, if it was the Jets, Bills, or Raiders with the first pick, then I would come back for one more year.

    • He’ll be the #1 pick. When accounting for his work ethic and no off field issues, he’ll rate higher than Winston.

He’ll be ok in the NFL if they suit the offense to his talents. I do compare him a lot to Alex Smith. Solid player but needs to play in a system that suits him. Or ease him into the pro style system over a couple years. It’ll be a rough transition if he’s asked to play pro style right away since he rarely took snaps under center. I don’t think he knows how to run play action.

Maybe even take the Carson Palmer route and sit him the whole year to let him learn. That’s probably the smartest way to handle him. But then again the NFL is a win now league and more rookies are playing right away.

  5. CBS Sports with decent attention to Wayne Tinkle concludes: “Larry Krystkowiak looks primed to have Utah among the nation’s elite for the duration of this season, but other than him Tinkle clearly looks like the early favorite to be named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. The Beavers are 11-4 heading into Thursday’s game at Washington.”

  6. Wisconsin signs a 2nd QB after Austin Kafentzis signs his LOI.
    That dude got duped.

He is naive to believe a coach would guarantee him the starting job.

    • But even more ridiculous talent that left. Hard to replace them all even in aggregate.

Conforto and Davis both came in and made a huge impact. Do any of these freshman hitters have that kind of ability? I have high hopes for Elliot Cary.

The pitching is the one area that the losses really hurt. Wetzler, Fry and Schultz were the best in the nation at their positions. All sub 2 ERAs. Everyone else other than Moore is relatively unproven. The team will have to make up the loss with offense.

The freshman, Ice, Morrison and Hamilton who played last year really need to improve. If they can pull a Jeff Hendrix improvement, then all will be well.

A whole lot of ifs this year. I think the team will contend for the conference title, but hard to say what they could do nationally.

      • Well said, Bill. I won’t be surprised to see Casey prove, again, what solid coaching can do.

I’m thinkin’ about going to the doubleheader vs Grambling on Feb 28; WBB vs Cal for season finale at Gill same day. Baseball starts at 1:05 and 4:05, WBB at 3:00…….too bad the schedules aren’t tweaked to allow attendance at all three events.

EDIT: Sent an email to Mark Massari regarding schedule tweak, I’ll post his response when/if it arrives.

    • Would like to see him wrap up more often, but these are “highlight” hits for the most part where he’s taking guys down on impact. The good thing about the way he does it is he doesn’t seem to leave his feet very often, so he’s driving through them and knocking the shit out of them.. He seems to have very good range. Importantly, he clearly has the aggressive play that Andersen is seeking. He has the look of someone who can help transform the defense. Imagine him on the field with Strong in a couple of years.

  7. Anyone besides me a bit curious/concerned(?) re Dave Baldwin?

I say that for two reasons 1) he’s changed jobs often, perhaps too often 2) in his interview with Parker he didn’t display the type of etiquette that most coaches do when talking about their previous jobs (perhaps he’s miffed because McElwain didn’t take him to UF?).

      • You know, MR said the same thing when he came here the second time. Personally, I don’t think we would have had the Fiesta Bowl season with him here because Erickson brought in the JC guys (TJ, Chad, etc.) that finished out the team that year. I doubt if they would have come here for Mikey.

        Just a thought…for what it’s worth…

    • Andersen’s on his third job in a three year span…hopefully all of their talk about Corvallis and “getting the band back together” is sincere so they stick around long enough to tribute to real program growth. I don’t mind if Andersen moves on in 5 or 6 years, but I’d like to see and his coordinators raise expectations and achieve them so the subsequent staff has high expectations placed on them. If Andersen’s gone in two years it may not produce much program growth.

I suspect with Sitake’s boom/bust defense, which seems to produce high sacks/TFL numbers as well as high point totals in losses, and Baldwin’s alleged love affair with bubble screens, we’ll have plenty to comment on in here (good and bad).

    • Just re-read Gina’s piece on Baldwin. She shows him as basically a position coach for his first ten years (78-88), then no info for 6 years. Plenty of job hopping after that, and not necessarily advancements in responsibility/stature.
As for blunt talk, he is 59 and is tight with Andersen; probably doesn’t feel the need to be as PC as younger guys.
I’m somewhat optimistic we’ll see three good years before he is ready for new areas to explore and new birds to watch. I’ll take that over several years of Langs or Garrett.

  8. Moore moved from Denver to LA for senior year. That could partially explain the no stars. In Colorado as a junior, he would have been on the radar of Utah coaches. Maybe he simply got lost.

  9. Massari answered my email in less than half an hour! Good customer service considering the time of day (after 7:30pm)!

He said, “…we’ve discussed. TV on WBB sets their time, and waiting to hear what baseball wants to do.
Someone will respond with final answer for you… ”

    To Be Continued

      • Per my comment above, I asked about a tweak to the start times on Feb 28 when there is a baseball double header and the final WBB regular season game, all in Corvallis. As currently scheduled it would not be possible to catch all three games in their entirety.

  10. UCLA whipped USC and Stanford beat Cal in Berzerkely tonight. Right now, Pac-12 is looking like a 3 bid league to the big dance. Utah, Zona and Stanford. Colorado is the next closest with an RPI of 71. That will not get them in.

    Colorado 71
    UCLA 75
    UW 78
    UO 88
    Beavs 105
    Cal 113
    Wazzu 125
    USC 126
    ASU 150

  11. We’re all jazzed about the Gary Andersen hire, and we should be. But meanwhile Tinkle is putting together something just as special.

    • Too bad he’s not as good as Read, who sometimes only needed 9 or 10 players on the field….

That comment has to be motivating and heartening to the team.

  12. Soccer related news. #2 pick in MLS draft is from OSU

American Soccer Now ?@ThisIsASN 8m8 minutes ago
First surprise of the draft as Khiry Shelton goes second to @NYCFC . Great athlete from Oregon State. Target forward body, winger’s pace.

  13. Is UW the most talented team the Beavs have faced on the road so far?

I hope I’m wrong but the way they’ve played on the road leads me to assume that tonight’s game will go in the L column. Plus the Fuskies haven’t been winning so they’re going to be motivated to get their Pac-12 season turned around.

Can the Beavs keep the margin to less than 20? 15? 10? 5?

    Go Beavs!

    • Greedy bastard; its like on every carry he wants six points. : )

Looks like he has kind of a gliding running style that can be deceptively fast, but he also can make some moves and take off.

Things are looking SO different already, even in the offers…..

  14. There was talk earlier in the day that Jay Irvine was meeting with Wake Forrest coaches today, but just a few minutes ago he tweeted this:

    G.O.E?? @Jay_underrated1 · 4m 4 minutes ago

Things ain’t go as plan???????????? I know where I’m going officially now????????????

Sounds like he might be ours to lose at this point.

  15. Its pretty much a matter of sticking to the identity that Tinkle has laid down. Intense defense, motion offense generating opportunities, everyone in on the act. Much harder to do away from home. I expect the confidence will come gradually. GO BEAVS!!

  16. This seems like a very difficult win for the Beavs. UW (a team ranked in the Top 17 just weeks ago) has struggled mightily in its last four games. They need a Win big time. I would guess we get their best shot. We have not had much success on the road this season. I could be wrong but this game seems like a UW victory.

If they pull this one out, look out.

    • This is a litmus test for how we’ll take it through league play. I also don’t expect much from our crew in this one. But maybe the limited experience at Hec Ed is a bonus in this one instance. Those with experience over the past several years have not had success. Maybe a blank slate finds early confidence and rides it to the end .

Still, inexperience away from home doesn’t bode well.

    • I agree. I’m on the fence. UW held a players only meeting after the home loss to WSU last weekend. During their 4 game slide they’ve gotten away from playing defense. Beavs seem to struggle against teams that can and do play good D. I can see this one being a blowout loss and the beavs coming in after knocking off Zona with a letdown. Hopefully the coaching staff has been preaching that all week. If the beavs continue the defensive prowess they’ve shown these last 2 games, this is a winnable game. UW always seems to be a superior athletic team. But I’ve never been sold on Romar as a coach and his teams always seem to freelance on offense. They’ve also been turning the ball over in droves lately. That bodes well for OSU. Either way, I’ll be watching. I think at least a road split this weekend is doable. Go Beavs!

    • He was lucky he didn’t get tossed on that one! Of course the guy had been hanging on him all game up to that point.

Refs did a shitty job both ways tonight.

  17. 19-15 isn’t the end of the world. Keep playing D. Those shots will start falling. BTW, It must be impossible for Upshaw to be called for a foul. WT should have been giving those refs an earful

  18. Team confidence looks shot.. Probably a lot to do with Robbins being out.. Mental mind fuck.

Honestly if he got suspended 10 games for weed that’s stupid.. It’s legal up there now right? GP2 needs to step up 0 points at half..

  19. Gary Payton is so ridiculously good defensively. Only reason the Beavers are up. Washington can’t get into the middle of the zone to make a play cause he’s getting his hands on every pass or drive in there

  20. I get it’s an athletic department rule.. But my time on campus was spent with plenty of dudes on beaver sports who smoked weed. No one was suspended..It’s just not a huge deal. Definitely. Not 10 games worthy.

    • I don’t feel good admitting this… but I was good friends with someone who supplied a lot of weed to some Beaver football players when I was there (pretty high profile players, for certain reasons as well…) This is coming from someone who doesn’t really smoke pot as well as a “dealer’ that is now doing well legally. It’s not a big deal and something that most players don’t have a problem with. It either is a new type of rule or an insane amount of stupidity on his part. I don’t want to come to conclusions, but his previous suspensions tells me it may be an issue with him being completely stupid.

      • It’s partly stupidity. Because it has happened once, he is eligible for extra scrutiny other athletes don’t get to enjoy. So he will get the surprise test without the complimentary, “There might be a random pee test tomorrow,” statement in the locker room by someone maybe associated with the AD.

  21. Jarmal Reid is not good. Does some incredibly stupid stuff. Whenever it’s him and a Gomis in the game the offense is a dumpster fire

  22. I don’t really care what it was for, but Robbins was one of the better scorers on a team with zero depth, so this pretty much derails my excitement for the rest of the season. I don’t see who can step into that role. Sanders? I doubt it.

    • This is unbelievable. How could Robbins do that? I really feel for the team and the coaches. Already short handed and this happens. Good god.

Gonne be way tougher now. I hope the coaches can deal with it. If anyone could, Tinkle & Co can. Lets hope so. Damn!

  23. UW didn’t put this game away until the last 5 minutes. Lack of depth? Yeah. Also, GP II is gonna have to start being more of an offensive threat . He was pretty quiet tonight. The offense has to come from everyone contributing. The loss of Robbins hurts though.

Huskies also shot 21 FT’s to OSU’s 10. I know some of those were intentional sending Upshaw to the line. He had a big impact on this game as the beavs seemed to be tentative taking the ball to the basket. Going to have to shoot better than 32% to win on the road

  24. As it stands right now, the beavs are only 6 deep. N’Diaye is not an offensive contributor off the bench. Yikes. These guys better start conditioning themselves to play 35+ minutes a game. And if someone gets in foul trouble, they’re fucked. It’s my fault guys. Had I not got tix yesterday, none of this would have happened.

  25. I wonder if the team feels like it got kicked in the nads re this Robbins deal?

I know as a fan I sure do.

I wouldn’t blame WT if he just kicked VR off the team and yanked his scholarship.

Is it possible that OSU could bring in a kid who has graduated and still has some eligibilty left?

  26. If women’s basketball maintains their ranking, they could be hosting first and second round games in Corvallis:

“Oregon State is currently projected as a No. 3 seed, which lines up with its No. 9 national ranking. But check out the location for the Beavers’ first- and second-round games: Corvallis.

The women’s tournament is switching from predetermined on-campus sites to the highest seed of each four-team cluster hosting the first two games. ”

    • ok, looking closer, it looks like the 4 with rain coats on are the visitors and the others are staff/GA’s. Looks like Moore, Irvine, Decoud and Taylor (rain jackets left to right) So no surprises.

      • Yeah, Lyle Moevao and Andrew Seumalo are the two on the far right. And isn’t the white guy Brennan? Not sure who the other two are, could be Lockette and Odum.

  27. That was seriously the most fun highlight Video I have seen in years..

Recruiting profiles say he runs a 4.9 that’s likely the reason schools are sleeping on him.. I could run that right now in my dress shoes.

But this dude reads recognizes, fills the hole and tackles better than any prospect we’ve had in a long while

  28. Lady Beavs down 9 at the half, Cougs forcing 15 TO’s which is more than the full game average this season.
    Mandy? Lookin’ good.

    • Cougs forced TO’s and made the Beavs comeback from a poor first half; Cougs had 23 PF’s vs Beavs 12. Cougs stepped into passing lanes and made Beavs work to come back.
      Final 73-70 good gals.

      • Did you notice, when you did your avatar test earlier in the thread, that the Space Invaders logos changed between logged in and logged out?

        • No, hadn’t noticed that. Boy, this is a long thread, took awhile to scroll up to that test.
Think I’ll log out and then post a message up by the test to see if the system assigns the same avatar as before.

ADD: When I logged out and posted again up by the test I got the same avatar.
          Too much spare time here.

  29. I was at the second half of the women’s game (was working until halftime). It was a bad night for OSU offensively. I can’t say how OSU got down so far to begin with, but they were out of sync on offense when the tempo was high. When they slowed it down they moved the ball around well. Defense was really good. Officials called a lot of ticky-tack fouls on OSU in the last ten minutes. The only reason I can figure why is so that it would be somewhat even, since WSU was fouling a lot.

    • Lia Galdeira on Wazzu was filthy though, you have to admit. She looked like she had been playing against men at the park her whole life and just played against women in games. If she hadn’t been in foul trouble, Beavs probably don’t take that game.

  30. Downside of a demand/supply “free market” economy: Blount has an NFL job as in an AFC championship game…bleah.

Oh, well, when’s his career is over. it’ll catch up to him….
