    • No. Chuck Knox used to say a that a lot of potential NFL DEs were playing PF in the NBA….and who could blame them? Lower injury risk, longer careers, more money.

      And Jack is not nuts…

When people go off topic (which is often), and the thread is wandering, Jack goes way off topic and owns it. He also usually posts some very good music.

He provides good insights on sports topics when this site is actually on the topic of sports, and he is one of the posters I actively read. If I don’t find what he’s saying interesting or useful, I skip it.

Many of his comments are rhetorical, and his recent pounding on the topic of Seth Collins’ vulva and bunched panties were spot on (did you see what I did there?).

Scan his posts – and everyone else’s – and if there’s no value in it (them) for you, move on…

But agree Jack, there are many basketball players that would be productive NFL TEs or DEs…

      • I expect better. A lay up with an assist from the opposition is a little weak.

Jack, I know you set this up for the feeble, but I feel I would be delinquent to mention the unmentionable.

Come on people! I know you can’t take what you give. But at least give something.

        • Or am I the only one who thinks words are words and can be taken any which way if chosen poorly?

That would make my estimation of the whole lesser if true.

          • Purple bottle to your left (not the generic pills). Take two quickly with food, you are about to go down that path again and if it’s another body part I’m going to have to leave for a long time!

          • Did I bring any of it up just now?

Was I serious when I said anything ever?

You thin-skinned hypocrites need to get over yourselves. You might end up with what you give more often than every blue moon… or every other blue moon.

          • So?

You’re the one bringing it up now. If you want to call your chum bait, so be it. This is still what you’re going to get every time you do it. So don’t complain when you get what you’ve been told time and time again you will get when you troll.

          • As a long time posters together on this site, I feel we have somewhat of a kinship and respect. I am saying that 50 posts about Vulvas was odd and not really necessary to make your point in this type of forum. My opinion on the episode. dismiss it as you will..

And when have I ever trolled you? Poking humor two or three times, not the same thing as trolling. Like when you said I made a racist comment and then you looked back at my posts and admitted I’ve never come close to saying anything remotely such. Editing yourself is never a bad thing. Less can be more.

          • It wasn’t a point. It was simply giving back… a troll. I have had knock down, drag out fights with women on other blogs who do precisely what I did, only they thought they were making a point. They weren’t. They were just trolling.

There is no point to make with that kind of troll. It is only what it is. And if you (generalized “you”) do it once, you may as well do it a hundred times. It’s still the same. If it’s funny once, it’s always funny. I would, if I wanted to make a point, say that I am more dismayed at the imprecision and degradation of language when it is so imprecise. I don’t care if someone said he sprained his interstate freeway. I would still have to ask why someone thinks that’s funny.

And while you aren’t thinking you’re trolling, you are. Lighten up? Do you think any of this stuff is upsetting? I am just providing a service people ask for. If you don’t want this service, simply don’t ask for it.

          • You’re not wrong in theory. But I am a solitary counter to many. One ten is, in fact, “worse” than each of ten ones.

I just don’t get why people go and chum the waters then complain they can’t swim.

  1. In other news–I can’t wait to see how this BB season goes, no doubt there will be some frustrating moments/games when the kids are just kids.

  2. What I’m really intrigued with this season is that there will be an abundant amount of upperclassmen leadership to counteract the influx of the highly touted freshman class. I bet the seniors will be able to help tremendously with these young guys and will help mitigate the younger mistakes.

I am definitely excited for the bball team this year.

  3. Looking for GPII to show the younger guys how to practice and conduct themselves as quality student athletes. I think that having him to go to for help and advice will be a great tool for the freshmen to help model themselves after and into.

  4. I think they’re going to be really good. In basketball a young player can dominate much quicker than in other sports. They now have a true point guard, too, which is huge.

  5. Jared Cunningham looks like he finally caught a break with the Cavs this year. So far he’s a part of the regular rotation.

Eric Moreland is hanging on in Sacramento. He’ll need some injuries to occur to see more time on the court.

  6. It’s time to prove to WOU that the Beavs are the Kings of mid-Hwy 99W. Last year was a fluke. I’m sick and tired of seeing all those bandwagon WOU bumper stickers and their red Wolves sweat shirts everywhere. The next time one of them gives me that “W” hand sign, they’re going to get a severe tongue lashing. JB

  7. Finally game day is here. I’m interested to see who starts. I’m also really interested to see how much we score. I’m predicting 80+ and I’m gonna go out on a limb and say gp2 and Malcolm are going to pack on some WOU defenders. Watch out below!!

  8. “The 2015-16 recruiting class was ranked the 17th best in the nation by Lindy’s Magazine, 18th by Rivals, 19th by ESPN, 23rd by 247 Sports and 24th by Scout, making it the highest-ranking class in program history.”

And its likely to be one of the best coached teams in program history since Miller…good times ahead for OSU MBB fans…

Also agree that in college basketball its easier for young players to make an impact; these young shooters are going to force opposing defenses to spread the floor, creating opportunities for others.

  9. streaming from the Pac-12 website is a fucking joke. Choppy feeds, feeds freeze, goes back and forth from HD to I can’t even tell what the fuck is going on as it is too blurry. They’ve had two years to fix this shit and have done nothing. Fucking pointless to even try watching.

    • I have no issues, might not be the PAC’s fault. High definition streaming from iPad to TV through apple TV without any lag or choppiness.

      • I am not the only one that has been having this problem with Pac-12 feeds. I can stream from any other source without issue.

    • they’ll have one more tune-up before the real games begin. Yes I know NWC counts in the win/loss standings but unless all the players come down with the flu I expect that game to be a laugher

  10. Just back from the basketball game. Here are a few quick impressions of the new guys.

Eubanks is more athletic than I expected. He can jump, he can run, and he can finish strong at the rim. He didn’t try a jump shot that I recall, so don’t know if he even has one. Had trouble boxing out, and rarely was able to seal his defender. Also, by the end, he was leaving his feet way too often on defense (he got block-happy). That said, he was the star of the game. He will play and contribute this year, even after Gomis and the other bigs get healthy. And he’ll be a lot better next year after he does some serious weight training and bulks up.

Tres Tinkle is pretty much what one would expect from Wayne Tinkle’s son. He has a strong knowledge of the game, is a solid free throw shooter, shows unusual poise for a freshman, and knows how to finish around the rim. He showed grit fighting bigger guys under the boards. However, he’s not super athletic. He had trouble staying in front of his man on defense. He doesn’t have great hops. And although he’s listed at 6’8″, I think he’s a bit shorter than that. Like Eubanks, he will benefit from time in the weight room. That being said, he’s going to be a good, solid player for the Beavers for the next four years, and he’s going to be consistent scorer (mostly because he finishes so well).

Stephen Thompson: He is a score first, pass second kind of guy. Has the talent and skills to score consistently at this level. Finishes well for a guy his size (6’3″ is my best guess — listed at 6’4″). Good handle. Can get his own shot against most defenders (he’s a strong one-on-one player). Like Eubanks and Tinkle, Thompson will contribute this year. But he will also incur the coaches’ wrath for too many “me first” plays, no-look or behind-the-back passes that end up as turnovers, and similar playground antics. The talent is there — but the attitude seems like a work in progress.

    • that was my first thought seeing Eubanks. Needs to put on some weight. The bigger dudes down low will just push him around.

      • “that was my first thought seeing Eubanks. Needs to put on some weight. The bigger dudes down low will just push him around.”

Yes, that happened last night. It will happen more often against bigger, stronger, more skilled opponents in the PAC-12 this season. My seats are close to the court (4th row baseline near the OSU bench) and I spent time focusing on Eubanks. WOU big men were often able to overcome Eubanks’ box-out attempts by pushing him out of the way. Same thing happened when Eubanks tried to seal out WOU defenders down low and call for the ball — Eubanks wasn’t strong enough to hold the seal long enough to make a play. Also, Eubanks tried, but rarely set effective picks/screens for his teammates. He clearly needs time in the weight room. That said, he already can contribute a lot to this team, as he did last night. He may have had more dunks last night than Olaf had all last year (perhaps a slight exaggeration, but not by much), and showed surprising and impressive ferocity in attacking the rim. Also showed a surprising (at least to me) amount of energy, as well as athleticism. Seems to have a team-first attitude. And seemed to listen closely to Wayne Tinkle when they talked — we can expect Eubanks to improve a lot if he stays this coachable. It will be exciting to watch his development, along with the rest of the freshmen, over this season and the years to come. Things are looking up for Beaver basketball, to say the least…..

        • Thanks for the insights SS.
He seems like a really good athlete for his size, but he did have kind of a strange running style. It appeared on TV he ran on his toes and the back of his feet did not touch the floor.

OT: Is he going to play baseball? He was a pretty good pitcher in HS, wasn’t he.

        • Small detail, but he was coming down the lane on a delayed break and was actually clapping for the ball, which he got and slammed it home. When was the last time we saw a Beav big that confident on offense that he was demanding the ball? I think that’s a good sign for the future, but I’m surprising myself to say this, the team will need a healthy Gomis come league play.

    • I was there also and saw it pretty much the same. ALL the freshman could benefit some weight room work. Eubanks better than I expected, Tres about what I expected and Thompson Jr less than I expected. Bruce will be a contributor by seasons end. If Olaf plays significant minutes we’re in trouble.

I like Malcum’s game but he still can’t finish at the rim.

  11. I was impressed with Eubanks. I went into the game thinking he’d probably be the least impressive of the Freshmen, but he was the most impressive, in my opinion.

  12. OT *sigh* well hell has frozen over. I didn’t want to click on a Goe article, but that fuckers headline got me. On o-live.

Criticism of Mike Riley mounts at Nebraska, and it’s hard to blame the frustrated fans: Issues & Answers. Ken Goe.

    • like he’s the first guy to report on this. He jumped on the caboose of an already fast derailing train. Schmuck with zero journalistic talent. No wonder he’s employed by that shitty rag

  13. Was at the game as well, my thoughts:

-Team needs to jell. Like did anyone else feel like the game felt….fragmented? The coaches weren’t joking about having to have chemistry. It seems like there’s two different teams here. Not like guys freezing guys out, but I get a glimpse of one team then a glimpse of another.

-The defense is a big indicator of that. Far too often, WOU could swing the ball around and find an open man in the corner. That’s communication, chemistry, and just having a mentality of playing suffocating defense. I don’t want them to lose that. The offense needs to come along; we need to be able to get a bucket at any time against an inferior opponent.

-Drew Eubanks is exactly the kind of player Tinkle must love. He’s so raw, but he’s already aggressive, plays defense hard, and runs the floor like a gazelle. He could be a future pro with a few years of seasoning. I knew he’d be good when I saw him play in the Les Schwab last year and he dunked on two Jesuit players at 8 in the morning. Unfortunately, because Stevie got crossed really badly by Akil Reese (who Stevie probably played against back in LA) we won’t ever get to see the volleyball spike he had in the 2nd half.

-The mistakes and free throws need to be cleaned up. GPII was awful shooting. Airballed, missed a ton of free throws, but he still grabbed a ton of boards and did his thing. Hopefully the airballs and free throws are more of a flu symptom thing because he can’t be missing shots like this. Stephen Thompson shot like crap too. He shows that’s good but geez man he had some trouble shooting.

-Tres and Stevie both have some decision making training to do. STjr is clearly good enough to get a clean shot but he’s gotta A) make it and B) not do some weird foray to the rim. Tres took a couple of ill-advised threes in transition. They’ll be good.

-Western is going to be good this year. They had 2 starters out (Avgi and Nichols) and they still filled it up from 3. They are going to give teams problems in D2. It was also nice to see Alex Roth out there. I was cheering on Roth from my seat, people were wondering why I was doing that. Dude was a Beav not even a year ago and played great. I hope he goes to work. Kadeem Strickland, seed of Beav Pat Strickland, should be pretty good too. I think he had some low low D1 offers and decided to go with WOU.

  14. Postgame thoughts –

All in all, lots of positives.

Eubanks looked good but you can tell he’s still raw. Will need to work hard to be ready for the bigs in conference play. Will need to stay out of foul trouble.

Thompson and Tinkle showed why they should come off the bench to start. Showed they have a lot of talent but need to learn the system. They tried to force plays at times and turned the ball over or forced a low percentage shot.

The defense showed that it can overwhelm smaller opponents. I expect to see more zone as the season goes on.

3 point shooting as a team sucked as did free throw shooting.

The rotation will likely change. I don’t expect to see more than 2 of the freshman on the floor at once. If any freshman breaks into the starting lineup, it’ll be STjr.

  15. Eubanks was very impressive. Much more athletic than was expecting and seems to be a legit 6’10”.
High upside for this kid. Tinkle Jr looks pretty smooth. This should be a fun season, assuming the team gets and stays healthy.

  16. Stephen Thompson jr reminds me Of a young Quin Cook from duke. Can flat out score the ball. He had an off night (0-4 from deep) and still scored 12. I think this team has a lot upside this year.

    • Also Eubanks impressed me a lot. He can block shots and protect the paint well. Our offense is going to be flat out explosive this season I think for these reasons 1) were going to run teams out of the gym with out athleticism. Notice how we built all outr leads when WOU was missing shots. Credit to them because they shot out of their minds for a lot of the game. 2) We have legit scorers in Gary tres Stephen and Malcolm who can get their shots when they want them(yet to be tested against a good D1 defense but still. I would still like to see us shoot better as a team (2-12 from 3) but another plus is we out rebounded them by around +20

      • WOU shot only 31% from the field. They hit 12 threes vs the Beav’s 2.

The freshman did look raw on defense. That’s why I think they will play zone against better teams. Not sure how Eubanks will play against a true post player. Can he stay out of foul trouble? that’ll be the big question.

I don’t think the offense will be explosive. It’ll take some time for the offense to get really going. Some guys looked a bit out of control trying to press up court. It may be more efficient. They’ll end up around 65pts per game.

I didn’t realize GPII had 17 boards. It was nice to see some solid rebounding.

        • That’s what I mean. They hit a ridiculous amount of 3s. We’ll see about our offense… We have a lot of guys that can get to the paint, and a lot of guys that can finish around the rim. Those are pretty high percentage shots in my opionion. We also shot 2-12 from 3 and I know we will shoot better than that throughout the season. Gp2 also played with the flu.. Guys crazy.

    • I feel like you’re reminded of Cooks because they look so similar physically but STjr is a much smoother scorer and shooter. Cook really couldn’t shoot for shit until he took a massive step forward last year. And even then he was shooting wide-open spot up jumpers while teams hopelessly tried to stop Okafor. I think STjr has a much higher ceiling based on his skill set and role on the team

      • They do look similar besides the fact Thompson jr has a much smaller frame. I agree with you though I think he can score the hell out of the ball!!

          • Someone has to spell players and give a few minutes. He’s fine for that, but I wouldn’t use him at critical times. If used strategically he’s okay and can make a 3 here and there.

          • I agree.. Maybe 5-8 minutes a game. Don’t forget we’ll have jarmal back soon enough too though, just another forward to throw into the rotation

          • Reid is smaller and brings another skill set than Olaf. Reid is more of a physical rebounder and drives the ball. Olaf is not physical at all and can shoot a little. I’d mix and match based on who the D has out there. If the D is small, play Reid as a sub. If the D has a big man in, put Olaf out there for 5 minutes a game or so. This assuming Eubanks needs a rest and the other bigs are hurt. If/when that changes so should the rotations. Olaf should get as little time as possible, though. Another good spot for him would be end of the game when down and needing 3s. He can shoot a bit.

          • Yeah the only way I see him getting minutes is if we need 3s… Which if we shoot the way we did last night, we’ll need some help in that department.

          • He could work well as the high post who passes it through and screens and as D on a face up 4. But he’s not good on the blocks unless he has a head of steam. He just can’t power up or through anyone. And we can’t trust that he’s yet the green light trey specialist he looks like he can be. He needs to take the lid off.

          • As a catch and shoot guy in certain situations, he’s adequate. We certainly can and will have a roster of better players in the future, but considering where we started, he’s got to soak up a few minutes a game.

I feel bad for the guy, nice kid, but he’s sort of like Brent Vanderveen on the football side, he’s just not built for this system.

  17. Holy hell Eubanks looks good. Needs to put on some pounds and add some touch down low but the length and athleticism alone will have NBA scouts drooling over him. Doubt he stays all 4 years. I understand the idea of an all-upperclassmen starting 5 for experience reasons but the bottom line is that the freshmen are gonna be big contributors on this team and Tinkle will need to mix and match older guys with younger guys so the team can start to develop chemistry with each other that’ll be crucial on the back half of the season. I’m sure he will as the season rolls along and all the freshmen get the jitters out

  18. I’m surprised how many people are surprised Eubanks looked good. He had a Gonzaga offer, and they rarely miss. He also had ASU, WA, and Washington State. Then there’s his film on youtube. Why would you guys think he can’t play? He was a big get at the time.

    • Wow I didn’t know he had an offer to gonzaga. I saw on ESPN he was a 4* recruit. Once he develops an offensive game and a more timely shot blocking ability he’ll be scary. Side note: OLAF IS TRASH. He shouldn’t play period.

    • I think it’s that his skills translate very well to this level. He is not a normal big. His raw is better than a lot of bigs ever achieve. He needs to work on lowering his trunk and using his legs more. But he has nice feet. I’m not sure if Tinks is going to address it, one thing I didn’t hear in the post game presser was the tendency for everyone to favor the wrong hand around the rim… except for Tres.

      • I noticed this too. I was pleased with tres’ ability to take contact and finish the play too. Derrick Bruce also looked good in flashes but overall didn’t have a huge impact on the game. If you watched the game(I’m assuming you did) did you notice that when we had our seniors in our offense got stagnant and often didn’t score points? Or was that just me.

      • The annoucers made a great point that Eubanks could catch the ball on the move and score it. Most bigs fumble the ball when trying to catch it on the run. It stood out most, and that he made every FT I saw him take (not sure his final stats there).

    • “After watching their film and seeing their dad’s coach, I think Tinkle and Thompson will be good from the get go. I’m not sure about the other 3” -angry

      • So what? I’m still not sure on the other 3.
That’s not incongruent with people being amazed Eubanks looked good. Draw a Venn diagram, dude.

It’s also one exhibition game. Small sample. He’ll probably be good, though, based off what I saw last night.

        • And factor in it was a D2 team… I think that’s a pretty good analysis, Thompson and tres did look the most ready out of the frosh before the exhibition

    • In the Olive post-game he said he was so nervous he was practically hyper-ventilating out there…imagine what he’ll do when he’s more calm, as he was in the second half.

“Freshman Drew Eubanks wore a mile-wide smile as his teammates pridefully surrounded him on his way down the staircase to the Beavers’ locker room, less than two hours after he was an admitted bundle of nerves.

“I came in (to the game), not even 30 seconds go by and I’m already out of breath,” Eubanks said. “I’m hyperventilating. I can’t breath.”

Ahh, competent coaching and competitive ball in Gill again….

  19. I almost hate to say this but ……….. I can’t believe how comfortable I feel with the coaching staff of the football, and especially, the basket ball teams. I have to pinch myself every now and then just to make sure I’m not dreaming.

Still have some reservations w.r.t. the football staff but I’m so much more comfortable with them than I was with Riley and his crew.

Bruised from the pinches but smiling big time.

  20. PAC-12 will be very good this year in hoops IMO. I’m predicting these final standings come March
1-3 zona/cal/Oregon. Don’t sleep on Utah though. But in my honest opinion I think that, barring injuries, all 3 of those teams will be a top 4 seed. All have ridiculous talent and depth.
4-Utah. Lots of veterans and arguably the best post player west of the Mississippi. Loveridge can stroke it from deep too
5-Oregon state. I think we compete better than expected in the PAC and we have good depth everywhere.
6-ucla. Decent guards(they’re young Besides Alford) but have a bruiser in the paint in Parker.
7/8- both teams to watch out for. Asu and USC. I’m thinking USC may go to the tourny next season especially w/transfer shaq aaron. Asu has a decent under looked squad.
9-12 take your pick. I don’t see these teams winning tons of PAC12 games. Although I think the most intriguing is Washington with all their young talent.

    • Delon Wright is going to be very tough to replace. I think we have a legit shot at finishing ahead of Utah.

I think Cal has a very good chance to finish ahead of Arizona too.

      • They’ll replace him with more balanced scoring but I think we can if we can stop that Jacob Poeltl or however you spell his name guy. I think once Oregon gets healthy they’ll make a push for 1st place in the league. Zona has the most depth in the PAC imo. Cal, although star studded, doesn’t have near zonas depth. It’ll be interesting w/ the 5 star freshman
