Thread is going up a day early because of how important the game is (doubt anyone wants to discuss anything but hoops right now). Since the thread is up so early, feel free to discuss anything, just don’t post youtube links and clutter things up until after the game!.

Regarding whether the Beavs are in or not, I see it like this:

1 road win: possible.
2 road wins: definite
1 road win/1+ pac-12 wins: probable
0 road wins, 2 wins in pac-12 tournament: probably fall short, but some hope

I think the Beavs have a story working for them (not being in it in 26 years) that could work in their favor because it makes them an automatic Cinderella story, and we know this tournament is all about that. Yay for futility? That’s why I think with just 1 more win it is possible.

Big picture, though, even if they don’t make the NCAA: the NIT is tangible improvement in just year 2. A lot of dead weight graduates — Payton will be the only real loss, but the incoming players look good and can probably replace his numbers, if not his disruption.

Wednesday, 8pm on Fox Sports 1

Go Beavs.

  1. I pretty much totally agree with what u already wrote angry. I really hope for Payton’s sake we can make it this year. Next year it will be Tinkle’s team but i figure we’ll be in about the same boat. The year after that i feel should be the one we make it in more easily.

  2. I agree with the above except for the Pac 12 tourney. If we win two games, then that means our 2nd win will have come against one of the top 4 seeds. This would be huge and boost our RPI as it would have taken a hit with the UCLA loss.

    • Well I did say some hope in that situation. I just personally think the two road losses would be tough to overcome because the wins would be on a “neutral” court, so I think they fall slightly short in that situation, but it’s possible they get in sure.

  3. Probably need some help too. Gonzaga and St Marys are both on the bubble. Need one or both to get knocked out early of their conf tourney to make their conference a one bid conference. Need all the other bubble teams to tank and get knocked out of their conf tourneys early.

Teams to cheer for this week,
SMU – they play two bubble teams in UConn and Cincy. SMU is ineligible for the tourney so these are its last two games of the year.

I doubt the story helps them at all. It hasn’t been played up at all through the year. The guys coming in next year will have little impact. Kone is coming off of ACL surgery and Dew just broke his foot last week. As we’ve seen with Thompson, there’s a bit of an adjustment period and McLaughlin is not at that level yet. The biggest impact next year will come from Rakocevic and Bruce.

    • Wasn’t Tinkle in a walking boot like two weeks before the season started? Plenty of time for those injuries to heal. Jack likes Kone a lot and I take his word on that. From what I saw of McLaughlin he looked like a very good scorer. Not sure about his D. But I think he’ll have impact on offense at least.

      • I don’t think anyone should expect any of these guys to be impact players like Tinkle and STJ. Those two were rated in the top 100 of their class and were expected to lift the team. None of the guys coming in are close to that.

I can’t see McLoughlin doing much in year one. At best LMW level play in the first year. Sometimes contributes, but for the most part is a role player feeding the ball to the big three.

Hard to say when Kone will be ready. Jan surgery puts him on track for the season but I wouldn’t expect much coming off ACL surgery.

Dew will probably have the least impact. This season he averaged 6 points! I mean that’s bad.

        • McCoughlin is a four star according to rivals and is ranked 69th in his class. He’s an instant impact guy. Do a little research.

          • He’s rated 3 stars in ESPN. and not a high one.

Rivals is a terrible place for bball recruiting. They base their stars on offers and what other sites put out.

        • The Kone injury was the least damaging ACL injury, i.e. no other structural damage, so he should have a quicker recovery. Barring Luck O da Beav’s, he hopefully plays this next year and is almost 100% by the start of conference play. For a frame of reference, GWB’s Rachel Banham had an identical injury last season and recovered well enough to get B1G POY and being second in the country in scoring at 27.7 per game.

          • In the limited video I watched of Kone, he actually reminded me of Josh Scott light edition, with his surprising agility + size. At only 18 he will likely heal quickly and be ready to start the year.

          • He’s more angular than Scott. He looks a lot like Buck Williams. If he gets the green light on his mid-range, he could be lethal. I would assume he gets that because he can make those plays.

When it comes to Jaquori, he is a five star guard. His D is understated because his O is that good. His temperament is the only question. That leads to questions of consistency on the next level. He would absolutely fail under Romar, he who likes to just throw the ball out and watch them play. The other coaches he entertained all had structure and discipline as core values. Tinks will harness his energy well.

That, and he wants to be the next GP at OSU. He won’t do it without showcasing his D.

      • Mullen’s a walk-on. Manuel is a four or five year project (at worst) because of his age. But he does have talent and will be a solid contributor if he doesn’t become something more.

  4. Cool to see a story about OSU Basketball in Sports Illustrated this week (about GP2 and his dad). I sure hope the Beavs can find a way to get into the tournament.

Lunardi’s ESPN bracketology has the Beavs as an 11 seed in a play-in game against Florida.

Hope the Beavs finish strong — going 0-2 in LA and crapping ourselves in the first round of the Pac-12 tourney will be so disappointing (and so familiar)…

  5. I’m going to Galen tomorrow and then to UCLA on Saturday as well. Can’t wait..

If we get one of these I think we are in!

      • Not terrible. 35 for tonight and 49 a pop for Saturday.

Its LA so there’s always the half an hour traffic pad.. The game tonight is late enough that most of the rush hour should be clear.

  6. “I think the Beavs have a story working for them (not being in it in 26 years) that could work in their favor because it makes them an automatic Cinderella story, and we know this tournament is all about that. Yay for futility? That’s why I think with just 1 more win it is possible.”

Agree here. Additional detail that makes the story even more attractive to the tournament and networks is the role of Payton II in bringing them back, Payton Sr. (and all of his college and pro achievements) having led the Beavs to their last tournament. Then there’s the contrast in style between the two, but with somewhat similar, sheet-filling stats (Senior was a pretty good rebounding PG in the pros)…Throw in Wayne and son…Thompson and son…call it “Beaver and Sons?”

IF they make it in, can rebounding be a focus of prep?!? Back to basics?

OT: Got my “OSU Mammoth” shirt, and my grafletics “No More Mr. Nice Guy” shirt:

    “Yea!” to no Nike logos….

  7. Eggers explains those missing two games in this piece:
    http://www.pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/295511-172919-beavers-dispose-of-cougars-face-crucial-road-trip
Oregon State had planned a November event in Corvallis in which the Beavers would have faced Valparaiso, Iona, UNC-Charlotte and another opponent. Late in the summer, UNC-Charlotte and the fourth school cancelled. “We got shorted two games,” Tinkle said.

    And, BYE BYE MANDY ???
Niya Butts out at UA, Mandy named a possible successor:
    http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/ncaab/ua/2016/03/01/niya-butts-out-ua-womens-basketball-coach/81165338/

    • I’m not a fan of this quote
“These games are crucial,” Tinkle said. “We feel we have to win one. By taking care of business this weekend, it took some pressure off of having to win both. We have a good feeling about what’s ahead.”

Gives the team the impression they can lose a game, and that’s never good.

      • I get what you’re saying, but sometimes playing loose leads to better play (softball pitch over the middle of the plate for Gopher) especially with such a young team. So who knows maybe that lack of pressure works in their favor.

        • I agree with angry’s take. What Tinkle’s saying boils down to “winning these games isn’t so important since we won some others.” Whatever happened to going 1-0 every game? Sounds like more of a “do just enough” Riley mentality and less of the “try your hardest and win” mentality that’s sorely needed.

How’s that for reading too much into a quote? :)

      • Honestly, it doesn’t bother me too much because it is at least realistic. A split does keep them alive. I sometimes enjoy reality and not rah-rah bullshit out of my head coaches, but I get what you’re saying also.

        • Or the last paragraph? Come on guys…read the article! :\

We can’t be content. The minute we get content, we get away from what got us here. We have to stay focused and hungry, and hopefully our best basketball is in front of us.”

          • IF the Beavs sweep in LA and Utah beats Colorado on Saturday, the Beavs would be tied for 5th and the 5 seed for the Pac-12 tournament. Possible? Of course. Likely? Probably not. But as Tinks said, the opportunity is right there in front of them and they control their own density (had to throw in the George McFly reference)

  8. Beavs didn’t even play and moved up two spots to 30th in RPI. Two teams to keep an eye on just outside the top 100. Iona (104) and Nevada (107). If those two can move inside the top 100 it just moves those two wins to the “quality wins” department.

Of course this is all for naught if the beavs can’t get it done in LA. Let’s go boys. Poke some holes in those condoms tomorrow night

    http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2016/rpi-live

    • I like the prediction section on the beavs page 17-10 with a 28 rpi. Does anybody know the highest rpi rated team that didn’t get in?

      • Colorado St was around 28th last year and didn’t get in. But that’s probably more attributed to them being a mid major. The honest answer is what is the highest rated RPI team from a P5 conference that was left out? I am actually quite puzzled by the fact that some are saying the RPI is being less relied upon. The way I see it, since the Pac has so many teams in the top 100 of the RPI (umm, all of them except Wazzu) everyone else says how can that be and it must be flawed. That’s the product of multiple Pac-12 teams scheduling quality non conference opponents. Now they’re just beating on each other in conference play. You know as well as I do that if it was any other conference the pundits would all be leaning heavily on RPI to show how great that conference is. They did it last year with the Big-12 and that conference flamed out and got zero teams past the sweet sixteen. Joe Lunardi and ESPN can suck a fart out of my ass. Go look at Oregon’s resume and compare it to Oklahoma who is in line for a No. 1 seed. Hell, even compare Utah’s along with them. And Utah has a win over ESPN’s favorite cockslob Duke under their belt. It’s absolutely ridiculous and a fucking joke. You can’t have it both ways

Matt Muehlebach said on the Pac-12 network pregame show before ASU/Buffs on Sunday that he went on a radio show back east last week and the hosts had no idea Oregon had a top 5 RPI. Tells you all you need to know. However, I will add it has been awhile since the Pac got a team to the final four.

        • Nobody pays attention to the PAC east of the Rockies. That is da Beav’s greatest hurdle even if the wins play out this week.
In other news, death ,taxes, Izzo. Sparty peaking in time for the tourney. Sounds familiar.

        • >The honest answer is what is the highest rated RPI team from a P5 conference that was left out?

Cincinnati in 2006 was RPI #40 and got left out.

EDIT – Yeah, they were in the Big East at the time. Got my conferences confused for a second.

          • 40 is about the cut-off with all the at-large bids. But when the committee looks at RPI, they also look at what you’ve done lately and who it was against. We are well within 40, and we have a top five SOS. If it stays that way, the numbers say we’re in.

To do that, I think we need one more win. Optimally, that would be to finish the regular season and gain a six seed. And that lets them play the Pac Tourney without worrying past the game at hand.

  9. In other Wednesday games

    Teams to cheer against,
    1. Texas Tech.
    2. Pitt
    3. Notre Dame
    4. VCU
    5. Butler
    6. Providence

Cheer for all the teams the Beavs have beaten. UW, Nevada. Helps the resume.

  10. Have been reading up a bit on USC. They’re an interesting case for the committee, particularly if they get swept this weekend. They started out hot, but are on a skid to end the season and have been on the wrong side of some blowouts lately.

I don’t expect their home court to be much of an advantage. Biggest concern is that USC has some serious size and athleticism on their roster. They can get out and run, get to the rim, block shots, and have a few shooters who can be dangerous.

Tough to call this one. Home teams have been good in the PAC this year. The only result that would surprise me would be a win for either team by more than 10 points.

A sweep this week would put OSU in. A split I think would mean they’d need 2 wins in the Vegas tournament to be safe. If they somehow get swept this week, beavs would have to win the tournament. Otherwise, hello NIT (not a bad thing with a young team)

    • NIT? Don’t forget about me! Going to this “NIT” is cheating on me! On US. We have so much history together. Did those .500 seasons we enjoyed mean nothing to you?

  11. Keys to a win tonight –

Get Eubanks going early. Need him to control the boards. Lately I’ve noticed him go up stronger for rebounds and taking some from Payton as he should.

Attack the paint early. Only wide open threes should be taken. Otherwise head fake and get to the paint. USC has struggled in the first half lately so a lead early would help.

Getting Jovanovic into foul trouble early. He’s their best big and having him out for long stretches would allow the beavs to crash the boards on offense. He’s really the only inside presence USC has.

  12. Must not have done his homework. They are set to get slapped with some sanctions from the NCAA, and since they are not part of the old guard, punishment should be swift and severe. They will pay for UNC’s misdeeds.

  13. All I will say about Mageo is….there’s trouble in paradise in Beaver Nation. I will tell you that if you don’t see an improvement in this team in two years….you have a very good reason to be concerned and air your complaints. The new regime may not be the answer. I’m sorry to talk cryptically, and I wish I could divulge more, but just know that it’s okay to be concerned at this point.
Mageo is making the right decision for him personally. I don’t blame him one bit.

    • I wish there were more “trouble” that leads to the transfer of players like Mageo! Cut the dead weight.

If you know something more serious send me an email.

      • Normally I agree with what you say angry, but I think you’re missing the mark here. Led team in tackles, two interceptions (one pick six I believe) and two forced fumbles. Even with our defense those are good numbers.

He was a quality player, as evidenced by his gaining an SEC offer. Now ole Miss isn’t a powerhouse by any means, but they’re also above average in the second best conference in college football. They don’t make a habit of recruiting “dead weight” players.

        • Led team in tackles

This is one of the more misleading stats in football. Ray Lewis is a great example of why. He made a living and HOF career making 140 tackles… TEN YARDS DOWNFIELD! Tackles for a loss is a much better stat. They should get rid of tackles entirely and replace it with tackles inside of 3 yards. Anything beyond 3 yards is meaningless, for the most part (a LB is usually going to be tackling a RB, so 3 yards is a good delineation for obvious reasons).

Mageo disappeared for entire games, was rarely if ever in the backfield, he made tackles downfield, etc. He’s a Pac-12 backup who was forced to start, and someone has to lead a team in tackles…

They don’t make a habit of recruiting “dead weight” players.

Mississippi State has recruited thousands of dead weight players over their history. We’ll find out soon enough if this guy is one of them, but I’m pretty good with talent eval…

Now, I’ve been wrong several times, like with Johnny Hekker. But who could have seen what good coaching would do for him. Maybe that happens to Mageo, and then I’ll have to eat my words.

          • You’re free to disagree or agree, buddy. No worries, but I just felt obligated to explain why I never liked him.

On the positive side, even for those who liked Mageo, this frees up scholie, so the staff can go out and recruit one of their players now for this upcoming cycle. Also a positive is the fewer Riley remnants the better.

          • Nailed it. He had 2 tfl, all season and both were sacks, that’s it. 87 tackles 5-10 yards down field isn’t that great. I’d like to know yardage gained on those tackles, that would give you a clue how “good” he was.
Aldo ole miss has 4 lb’s in the mix as of now. They lost that #2 lb out of Arizona to utah on signing day, they are hurting for bodys.

          • Yeah, other guys who’ve led the Beavers in tackles lately include Tyrequek Zimmerman, Anthony Watkins and Keaton Kristick. It’s not exactly a sign of greatness.

Rommel Mageo had 2 tackles for loss last year. That’s one more than Zimmerman had 2 years ago as a safety, but one fewer than Zimmerman had 3 years ago. What’s the loss here? Dude looked slow to me.

I’d rather have a player like Michael Doctor (11 TFL) or DJ Alexander (12 TFL), hell, even Kristick had 7.5 TFL the year he led us in tackles.

I think we have a couple future guys like Derrick Doggett (93 tackles, 17 TFL) or Keith Ellison (99 tackles, 15 TFL) on this roster and that’s probably scaring off guys like Mageo who realize they might not get as many snaps this year.

          • I’ve always thought there should be some sort of stat like average yardage per tackle. This would help discriminate between garbage tackles and meaningful stops.

      • Serious? Dead weight? Weird that Ole Miss wants him… They only beat Bama last year and got to 10 wins.

Re: Tackles and TFL’s – neither happen in a vacuum. Possible that a shallow D-line didn’t win at the line of scrimmage to allow for LB’s to get downfield, etc. The fact that Ole Miss wants him is a better barometer. Doubt they want too many guys on our roster right now…

        • Well put. How about making touchdown saving tackles a stat. The stats suggested would be even more deceiving then the basic tackles stat. It’s not perfect but the suggested isn’t better too much unaccounted for.

    • DB- I think everyone on this site has said GA needs to have improvement over 3-4 years or he’s gone. Why would anybody on this site give GA the riley treatment after we just got burned for a second time. Its improve or leave…..it’s that simple.

  14. DB- I’m sorry to talk cryptically, and I wish I could divulge more, but just know that it’s okay to be concerned at this point.
Couple points: 1) it is always OK to be concerned, and 2) I’m not convinced you could divulge more, but if you actually can, you could take Angry up on his offer.

I was a big fan of Rommel at first, really liked the toughness that a rugby background should bring, but found his performance disappointing especially the last several games. Good luck to him.

    • My bet is that Mandy stays. When she does leave doubt it will be as a HC in the PAC12.

As for the ideation team, seems to me they have yet to fill the seats shown on TV at Gill.

    • At the bottom of that page you can see the OSU AD mission. What do you guys think of it:

“The mission of the OSU Department of Athletics is to provide opportunities to young people and develop leaders through a tradition of academic and athletic achievement in a progressive, inclusive environment of mutual respect.”

  15. Pac 12 Tourney Scenarios for the Beavs. Currently in tie for 6th.

Win both – The highest seed the Beavs can get is the 6th seed. Oregon, Utah and Cal have 11 wins. Beavs can only get 10. The could tie AZ and CO for wins but they lose the head to head tiebreaker with AZ. They lose a tie breaker to Colorado because they lost to AZ. The tiebreakers are the record against the first place team and so on until someone has a better record. CO and OSU went 1-1 against all the teams ahead of them except AZ who CO beat but OSU lost to.

Lose both – Lowest seed they could get is the 10th seed if they lose both. If UCLA or UW loses tonight, it’s 9th. Both lose, it’s 8th.

Beat USC, Lose UCLA – Could get the 6th or 7th seed depending on Stanford. If Stanford beats AZ, they’ll be the 6th seed.

Lose USC, Beat UCLA – Lowest is 8th.

The 6th seed would be the goal. They get ASU and then the 3rd seed. Utah is probably the team I would want to see. They are hot but the Beavs have played them very tough in both games.

    • “The highest seed the Beavs can get is the 6th seed”

“They lose a tie breaker to Colorado because they lost to AZ”

Not correct. 5th is the highest the Beavs can finish. You forgot Utah

In the event of a 3 team tie with CU and Zona the combined records against those opponents would be the first tiebreaker. Beavs would be 1-2, Buffs 2-1, UA 2-1. However that scenario is extremely unlikely as Arizona who already has 10 wins is not going to drop both games at Mckale to Stanford and Cal.

In the event of a two team tie with Colorado at 10-8 (the only way this is possible is the beavs sweep in LA and Buffs lose at Utah), Beavs would win the tiebreaker. Split against each other, both split against the Ducks. However, Buffs would be 0-2 vs Utah and Beavs 1-1. That would be the tiebreaker giving the Beavs the 5 seed.

Utah still has a shot at the Pac-12 title but they need help from one or both of the LA schools

  16. Since expanding to 12 teams, no PAC-12 team has made it to the NCAA with less than 10 conference wins. This could be the first year. However, for the Beavers, I think they need to be .500 in conference to even have a shot. The conference RPI will probably help get 7 teams in for the first time ever. I think the last spot may come down to OSU and USC. A win at USC would be the first road win against a top 50 RPI team.

  17. Regardless, its a HUGE game tonight. A win puts them ahead of at least Usc and gives them the opportunity of the sweep. A matchup with Asu would be preferred. That would give us a few good wins and should be enough to get them in. However, they don’t matchup well with Ucla and usc is in desperate mode. I think if they lose both, they might be NIT bound. Let see where the chips fall, but this is a big game either way.

    • Yeah I don’t like the UCLA matchup. People get too into records. UCLA is a worse matchup than USC. Very close to a must win tonight, which is why Tinkle acting like they have a game to lose pissed me off.

  18. Who do we want to win…UO/UCLA? Naturally, I always root for a an uck loss but does it help us if they win, perhaps from an RPI perspective?

    • Never root for the quacks!

      Possible exceptions:
When they play Biley next year
When they play Biley the year after (if they’re still around)

  19. The data crunched from kenpom says 77-72 loss. But I think SC crumbles under the pressure and we get the road win we desperately need. SC is better than UCLA but they are a worse matchup. They have better interior offense. Plus Hamilton did not miss at Gill.

  20. Oregon beats UCLA. Clinches share of pac-12 title and number 1 seed in conference tournament. Beavs can finish no worse than 9th. UCLA will be 10th

  21. Pretty sure Eubanks was just trying to break his fall… He was way up there, I can’t blame him… I like how the announcers were trying to make it look like he was fouling him to stop the bucket… Dude is 5 ft off the ground sideways what do you want him to do

  22. two air balls, multiple turnovers, and another long scoring drought. Why does this team continue to have long stretches where they can’t score after 27 games?

  23. Sometimes I wonder why we bother. Then I wonder why the team bothers. Then I wonder why WSU bothers. Then I wonder why I’m spending so much time wondering about sports stuff

  24. Oregon State’s defense is complete garbage no matter what defense they’re playing tonight. Biggest game of the season and they no show. What an embarrassment

  25. USC is able to get into the lane just about anytime they want & lots of put backs off missed shots.

Offensively, OSU looks…well hapless. Nothing going at all. This game could get out of hand.

    • or an injury to one of your best players, not shooting any first half free throws and your opponent making 8 of 11 three pointers. Add the beavs playing zero defense and well that’s what you get. I’m still dumbfounded by how this team is so awful defensively on the road. It has to be some sort of mental roadblock.

What was the other part of the Tinkle quote you left out stating what happens when they get away from doing what got them this far?

  26. How many layups are they going to miss tonight? Embarrassing. Well at least there’s baseball and spring practice to look forward too.

  27. A lot of problems tonight. But you’re not going to be very many teams when you let them go 9 of 12 from behind the three-point line.

  28. USC is playing out of their minds offensively and they’ll regress but Oregon State is too far behind for that to matter. Oregon State isn’t even competing on defense. Looks like a team that didn’t think they had a realistic shot and when USC made their run they mailed it in. It’s disturbing how often under Tinkle the Beavers haven’t even been competitive on the road. I thought with the season on the like they’d play with some urgency but it’s the same old mentality. Even under Craig this team didn’t have this many garbage performances on the road. At least in the majority of their road games it wouldn’t be a total blowout almost every road game. This is brutal to watch time and time again

    • CR is available if you’d like to start a grass roots campaign to have him rehired. I don’t think you’ll find many supporters

      • Hell no, CR was a horrible coach and nobody would ever want him back. Was more pointing out how it doesn’t look good on a coach for this many embarrassing road performances to happen time and time again. Team just never looks ready to compete on the road and even though they have some crappy upperclassmen, they shouldn’t be getting steamrolled like this in a must win game

        • What’s most disheartening is last year they played great D every night, and this year they don’t…you have to assume it’s because they had a highly ranked recruiting class, and think they don’t have to try as much since the other players are the same. A lot of people worried that would happen, and it did.

  29. “These games are crucial,” Tinkle said. “We feel we have to win one. By taking care of business this weekend, it took some pressure off of having to win both. We have a good feeling about what’s ahead.”

    • I’m not even sure if that’s why they played like garbage. Tres is out and this is how they play in most road games anyways. Basically the game has gone exactly the same as the Oregon game. Look decent early on, home team makes a run and they mail it in and that was in a rivalry game.

  30. Oh Beavs…still can’t seem to get over the hump in either of the major sports. I know nobody wants to hear it but Tinkle has shown quite a few Riley characteristics in his first couple years. Maybe I’m just fed up with the ducks taking the next step in all of their sports seemingly effortlessly. Chalk up another year where we’re relevant in all the sports that aren’t relevant. Luck O da Beavs

    • The Ducks expect to win at everything. We had the Riley mindset forever…and now Tinkle saying they only need to win one of two. These coaches set the tone and the players run with it…

Tinkle definitely has Riley in him. Playing the walk-ons last year, his quote yesterday, etc. Even senior day was pretty cheesy.

  31. This loss doesn’t eliminate their NCAA hopes but they’re definitely gonna lose to UCLA and will probably get bounced in the first round of the Pac-12 tourney and that will. A promising season ending up in the NIT. Those losses to Utah, UCLA and Stanford will haunt them

  32. Bruce’s development is troubling. He looks really awkward out there. He moves more like a break dancer than a basketball player.

  33. This is a young team in a competitive conference… Pretty sure a few weeks ago people were crying about how they were not going to make the cbi… We are down one of our more consistent players on the road… We all know now that they are not good on the road but the sky isn’t falling!

    • Most fans are tired of the NCAA Tournament being unattainable. This team had a legitimate shot at making the NCAA Tournament and would be in good shape with a win. Even a close loss and there would be hope this weekend against UCLA. This team flat out gave up in the first half and the hope for this weekend is over and they aren’t beating Oregon, Cal, Arizona in Vegas. This was a big chance for the program and they didn’t even play a competitive game. Even without Tres, this team should have been more competitive against a USC team who isn’t on the level of Oregon, Utah or Cal. That’s what’s most disappointing.

      • and they still do have a shot. Does it mean they will? No. Look I am just as frustrated with this teams road performances as everyone else. But some of you REALLY need to step off the ledge. In two seasons Tinkle has led them to back to back 17 win seasons and in both seasons will have had just as many conference wins than any team CR had. No coach here since the late Ralph Miller can say that. 16 months ago people were saying Oregon St would be lucky to win 5 games. They won 17. Many said they’d battle for an tourney bid this year. I disagreed with that saying anything less than an NIT bid would be a disappointment. Road performances not withstanding they are right there. Am I saying Tinkle doesn’t have flaws and his coaching performance not critiqued? Not at all. Here’s where this program needs improvement imo

        1. More athletic players. Across the board in the Pac most of the other programs have faster, more athletic players. Fact

        2. Lack of a physical low post presence. Eubanks may get there some day. Right now, Beavs don’t have one

        3. Back to basics defensively. Even with the low scoring I preferred last years defense. I am not fond of the Beavs matchup zone. Gives up too many outside looks. But then again the beavs really aren’t athletic enough to guard most conference opponents man to man.

        4. Free throw shooting. less than 70% is unacceptable. Less than 80% is unacceptable in my book but apparently times have changed.

        5. Rebounding. I would not mind seeing a rebounding coach brought in. Even if just temporarily (if that’s even allowed. hell call it a rebounding consultant?)

This team has too many flaws right now to be a great team. And next year may even be a step back with mostly freshman and sophomores. Beavs will have their day in the tournament. It may not be this year again. But it will happen sooner rather than later. For a program that is accustomed to losing you can’t just turn it around overnight and become a great program. It doesn’t work that way.

        • Spot on Whiskey! I mean even if this team makes the tourney, realistically how deep will they go? Imo, a lot of positives to take away from this season, it’s looking like a program on its way back… I wish it could be today too but in reality this is a good season for OSU regardless of where they end up.

          • I was a freshman in high school about to turn 14 the last time the Beavs made the tournament and we listened to that painful Ball St loss on the radio during introduction to physical science class (that was called IPS for those of us old enough to remember). I’m just as tournament starved as everyone else. I am of the opinion that it would be better served for this program to make the NIT this year, get a few more home games and practices in. They have a higher chance of making a deep run in the NIT (especially with some home games) than they would in the NCAA’s. They’d be one and done and the experience over in the blink of an eye. Big picture here folks.

        • I recall – unfortunately – the Tinkle Montana team (in the NCAA because of winning the Big Sky conf.) being beat down by Syracuse 80-something to 30-something. Not saying this would happen with the Beavs but I prefer the NIT as well – fwiw.

        • Personally, I’d rather lose big in the NCAA tournament, than lose less big in the NIT. Either way, no Tinkle2 means tough sledding ahead.

  34. I don’t get the routine of – a good play followed by a time out – CR used to do that, also seems to me better to let the game flow.

    • And it helps the opposing team’s coach settle down his team and design a play to prevent any run happening for Oregon State. Teams shouldn’t be allowed to call timeouts after made baskets anyways. That’s always been stupid

    • Eubanks doesn’t know how to be a big person in a world of big people.

edit: I just read that Bieber (German for beaver) fell in love with Sandy and wants to move there. I’m sure of two things. The first is that lines at Joe’s will make it a non-go-to.

      I forget the second

  35. Its really difficult deciding if we’re lazier closing out on the arc or blocking out someone when usc shoots. Tinkle out and we decide to hustle even less. Olaf wouldn’t even start on the women’s team

  36. Sure we lost the game, but at least the crappy weather’s gone with the massive sunshine Mike Parker’s pumping everywhere

  37. Cant BELIEVE DAT MO FO WICK FINKLE GET OUR AZZZZ BEAT DOWN LIKE BUMS???>>>

BEAVS AINT GOING NO WHURRRR WIT OUT SOME REAL BUZZXINES INN DATE TOURNEY YALL > VEGAS YALL^^^^

DIS COACH SHUD B FIRED BEFORE CONTRACT NO GROWTH WE FINSIHIH STADY IN DAT BOTTEM TIER YALL DIS AINT GONE GET IT NO LIKE COACH BE4 & COACHB 4!!!!!!

BOOTYM LINZ DOE BEAVS STANK DOE AINT GONE GET 00000000 CONSideTRIONAA+!!

  38. Beavers with a late run to make the score respectable. Beavers trailed by double digits the final 25:02. That was a beatdown. Really expected them to come out and at least play hard. I’ll be shocked if they keep it close with UCLA this weekend

  39. Seems like we had a lot of false hope in here regarding road games. The evidence told us that against good teams they will lose on the road, yet we somehow thought the magnitude would bring out a different performance and it didn’t. Why is that? Hope ain’t a strategy.

Here’s what I don’t understand and maybe someone with PHD level hoops expertise can shed light, I don’t get why the defense is so much worse this year with many of the same players? Was Gomis that important? Is LMW a better defensive player than Stevie or Tres? Eubanks is not a good positional defensive player. This was CR stuff tonight with open three and open three.

    • LMW is better defensively than both by a pretty good margin but basically everyone is worse defensively. GP2 knows this and tries to sag into the lane cause he knows his big guys are a trainwreck on defense and thus it leads to open shots. Olaf, Jarmal and Eubanks are responsible for defending the corners and always too late or too slow to keep guys in front of them and Eubanks will fly by on a pump fake. They knew last year they had to play defense to have any shot and this year it seems like they take possessions off cause they have better scorers. To get open shots last year against this defense, teams had to really swing the ball and get it into the middle to get the defense to commit. Now it’s one pass and a wide open three. Not the same commitment or focus

      • Good points and It’s frustrating to watch. The team goes from having some of the best three point defense in the country last year to the stuff we saw tonight.. Also, on offense it seems like a lot of guys are scared to take threes. Lots of faking and driving, but not realy strong finishes. Three ball is the name of the game in college. Step up and bury them.

      • LMW is not a better defensive player than Tres. Congrats on taking the early lead for “moron of the year. That’s a big accomplishment.

      • thought? Not really. Be in position to have a chance at winning one of them? Yes. If Tres doesn’t play on Saturday, forget it

      • Santa Claus

one of these would be a boon

We should be in regardless. But we know that the East Coast bias is real. It is what it is. When talking about irrational data, the whole “not been there for lots of time” argument might get some traction.

        But that’s also irrational.

We should be in now by all objective data.

        That is all.

  40. Can anyone explain how Eubanks, with his size and athleticism, can’t dunk? The ball flies out of his hands on the way up…every time.

  41. highly unlikely we see Tres again this season. Big blow to this team and program. And Whiskey is down with a stomach bug. Luck o da rodents as beavergopher would say

In his postgame radio interview with Mike Parker, Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle said that his son and starting forward Tres Tinkle would be “out for a while” with the right foot injury he suffered in practice Tuesday. That potential long-term loss is significant for a number of reasons.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/03/5_thoughts_following_oregon_st.html

  42. The dream has ended in a walking boot. Really bad timing for an injury. Luck O da Rodent.
Troubling: seemed like the team thought they had no shot and played accordingly.
Tinkle’s quote. Agree with Angry that it is a piss poor message. Would Nick Saban ever say something like that? Of course not.
Injury to the same foot in the same year is a huge red flag.
The road thing: it’s one thing to lose, it’s another to not be competitive. Plus, other than AZ, the areas are not exactly packed. It was half empty last night. This is hostile?

    • Galen is weird all the student seats are out of camera view so on tv it can look sparse l.. I was there last night on the baseline behind where GP was sitting and it was probably about 80% full in total.

Not Zona by any stretch but still an ok crowd for a Wednesday night game. With that said our effort was again weak… Somethings gotta change Saturday.

  43. I was able to watch on DVR, so I only lost 45 minutes of my life that I can’t get back instead of two hours. I know the defense was shakey, but it also seems that during these road games there are always four or five minute spots where The Beavs just cannot score or they get fouled and miss the attempts (which is really like a turnover) and suddenly they are 8 to 10 points behind. I still think they are missing an athletic spot up guy who is always looking to shoot threes and is confident in his stroke. Every good team seems to have one, I don’t know who that will be next year.

    • LMW should be the athletic spot up guy. He doesn’t crazy athleticism but he is athletic and he can shoot threes but he has no confidence now. He’s making 37% of his threes on the season and he should be launching when he’s in there cause he makes his fair share. He’s always trying to drive and that’s just not in his game for the most part. His regression the last 2 years has been bizarre. In limited playing time 2 seasons ago he seemed like a guy on the rise. 41% from the field and 35% from three aren’t great but they were improving and I figured he’d take a leap. Shot 36.1% from the field last year and 37.7% from the field this year. I really liked his game coming into Oregon State and just never put it together. A real shame.

      • Yeah. His High School Tapes made him look like Jared Cunningham lite. I was really excited about him. Seems like he’s a likable guy with a good attitude in games, but has off and on been in the dog house with coaches for the last 3 years.

Maybe he doesn’t work hard in practice or has a bad attitude? Idk. Just bummed he didn’t pan out. Seems like theres potential was always potential for him to be a solid contributor.

      • I agree wholly. But I ascribe his failure to not putting up shots. His stroke is excellent. I fought the Rudy Gay comparisons because he is nothing like Gay. He just looks like him if you fuzz out your lenses.

His stroke and his hands are very similar to that of Ray Allen. If he were to be pushed as that spot-up dead-eye, he would have been a major success on this level and beyond.

Two things happened. We did not have a place where he could just put up shots in the case of insomnia or whatever. He was also not directed by his head coaches to do so. CR saw his immense ability and tried to harness it as a Mitchell Butler type. LWM is intelligent and hoops savvy enough to know he can do those things on a certain level. But those are not his strengths. And his strengths were not fostered.

Say what you want about CR. He could identify talent. He could form talent to his program, that which he could get. His process was good but unsuccessful in terms of wins. But he was the first coach in a long time who spoke to our legacy as a program. And that translated to people coming on board and investing in the future. He was never the guy who would get us there, wherever there may be. But he built a great foundation for those who might do so.

And I think this team might do so.

        • Comparing Langston Morris-Walker to Ray Allen?

That’s like comparing a Maserati to a Yugo. Just when I thought I couldn’t be more dumb you go and write that shit. Thanks Jack and Interwebs!

Meanwhile the OSU basketball practice facility opened in the summer of 2013. Almost 3 years ago. He’s had plenty of time to refine his shooting skills

          • You guys don’t even read.

The comparisons are minute, yet you make them the whole. If I said someone carries the rock like Tiki Barber, are you gonna say I just said someone is as good as Tiki Barber?

Of course you will. Why do I bother asking?

      • You are right, It looks like he has open threes, but he likes to pump fake and then often drive into the land of nowhere. I wish he just would have launched threes all his career. He has some length. He can take that shot. He nailed a nice one last night and then pumped faked on a couple more opportunities. I thought LMW would be a 13-15 point guy by now with 5 or 6 rebounds a game.

    • It felt like they could have played a little better in the first half. Played right into USC’s game plan. USC was playing well but the Beavs could have stayed within 10 at the half and maybe had a fighting chance in the second half.

First 7 of 9 shots of the game were three point attempts. That’s not the strength of the team. It felt lucky that they knocked down 5 of those three pointers.

      • Our points in the paint recently have been due to Tinks growing into an interior force. USC was stuck in the scouting report until Enfield could get them to the sideline and make adjustments. He just told the team we now had nobody who is better inside than Jovanovic, and they extended their D. It was pretty much over at that point.

We’re a tourney team only when we’re a whole team. Tinks is a big part of that whole.

    • They did start missing in the 2nd half…..when we bothered to get out to the line and actually played legit D on them

  44. Missed an opportunity last night. Tinkle foot issue insult to injury.

Season can still lead to great things for the Beavers. Or, it could be 3 more frustrating games and then call it a season. UCLA has been arguably the most inconsistent team in the country this year.

Will be an awful time to see “good UCLA” this weekend

  45. ASU doing the Beavs a favor beating Tree by 15 at halftime. Beavs can do no better than finishing in a tie for 6th at 9-9 with USC and UW. In that case the Beavs would win the tiebreaker and be the 6th seed (Beavs 2-1 vs USC and UW, UW 1-2 and USC would 2-2) and get ASU in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament. ASU loses the tie breaker to UCLA if they finish tied for 10th. So right now UCLA 10th, ASU 11th and WSU 12th are locked. For the 6 seed Beavs need to win (obviously) and USC lose to Oregon. If USC wins they could tie Colorado for 5th. USC wins the tiebreaker over the Buffs. Should the Beavs lose on Saturday and Stanford lose at Arizona, Beavs and Tree would tie for 8th. Beavs would win any tiebreaker over Stanford and be the 8 seed, Stanford 9th. This is the most likely scenario and probably the best first round matchup. Beavs could also finish 7th if they win and USC beats Oregon. Beavs win a head to head tie breaker with UW. At any rate, no higher than 6th now, but no lower than 9th. So the first round matchup wil be either Stanford, UCLA or ASU. Most likely Stanford. I don’t want to even think about a 4 way tie with USC, UW and Stanford at 9-9. The word clusterfuck comes to mind.

    Clear as mud?

      • here’s my prediction

        OSU/UCLA…….UCLA
        ASU/Cal…………..Cal
        UA/Tree………….Zona
        Buffs/Utah………Utah
USC/UO………..toss up. But I’m gonna take the Trojans at home in a close game

Utah and Oregon share the Pac-12 crown, Cal gets the 3 seed, Arizona 4th, USC 5th, Colorado 6th, UW 7th, Beavs 8th, Tree 9th. Oregon is already 1 and Utah is 2 with the win. Last 3 spots are already locked. Beavs/Tree with the winner facing Oregon

  46. Beavs still in most brackets. Got a lot of help from the other bubble teams losing and maybe benefiting from east coast bias who don’t know how big the injury to Tinkle is.

No bubble teams in action tonight. But definitely want the reg season champs of the smaller conferences to win their tourneys to avoid adding more bubble teams.

  47. If the tourney doesn’t happen, I kind of look at it this way. The team fucked up at home against Stanford and UCLA and are now paying the price. Margin for error is razor thin, take care of business at home in this league first and foremost.
