    • As I recall the Beavs had one scoring drought of over 6 minutes and another that was over 2 minutes. Their play became very ragged as soon as substitutions were made and that ragged play pretty much continued for the rest of the half.

    • I am willing to allow you to be a part of the “decides everything for white guys” group.

I think my arbitrary involvement means more than us just kissing.

      Maybe not. Maybe smooches.

      Kissy kissy……………

  1. New drinking game: Take a shot of your favorite every time Beavs miss an open shot!
If you really want to get messed up include free throws too.

  2. Idiot Kyle Whittingham calls a timeout for no reason with 23 second left when UW had no timeouts and appeared content to play for overtime after a simple running play from about their own 30 yard line, so with the clock now stopped Chris Petersen goes for the throat and the Fuskies gain almost 50 yards in two plays to kick the winning FG with three seconds left.

Update: Whittingham told the press he called the timeout because he was “playing to win”. WTF? He may not be there long enough for GA to join the staff.

  3. So I’m over there reading cornnation.com just for some good schadenfreude, and some dude says Riley has turned Nebraska into Oregon State of the East. Thanks for the kick in the nads (I supposed I deserved it)

    • Wait… a .600 coach?

Unlike your previous stops, you brought him to a place that knows all too well what tough, hard-nosed, aggressive offensive line play is supposed to look like.

Jim Gilstrap says Thomas Bothwell and Eric Gregory needs to do some fucking bear crawls.

      • I sort of doubt there really is a “Thomas Bothwell” and shame on you for expecting a cliched Husker fan to be a math wiz! I don’t think even adding in the CFL gets the gum chomper up to 60%.

At least Eichorst got out town before the bullets started flying! I’m mean did these fucking Cornheads expect Bike to turn down the lottery after he won it? This is hardly his fault…..I think there’s a Dennis Green quote that applies.

    • Haha. He takes a jab at OSU fans not knowing what good line play looks like. Lame.
Writing level looks 5th grade. Hope that guy isn’t a college alum.

      • What cracks me up is that Nebraska has not been relevant for damn near a decade and a half and they’ve tried four different head coaches. We tried to tell them that the 7-0 start last year was Fool’s Good and they were too big of assholes to even understand strength of schedule. I mean are there Army fans out there still pining for the 40’s? How many different ways can you tell them they are not an elite program any longer?

  4. Lots of speculation, but doesn’t appear to be much interest in Oregon State. Kelly at UCLA would be interesting for the PAC.

    https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/college-football/2017/11/19/16673512/college-football-coaching-search-news-updates-nebraska-florida-tennessee-arkansas-auburn-fsu

I would be disappointed if OSU actually asked Butch Jones if he were interested. Doesn’t seem he’s had much success in quite a while has he?

One more week of rampant speculation at least…..

    • I guess one could conclude that OSU won’t be in the mix for any “name” head coaches anyway unless Bronco is truly not happy at Virginia. I’m in a sour mood, I really hope OSU has not become the next Kansas, (two win ceiling, beat your FCS opponent and have one upset in conference play every couple of years). Remember, Turner Gill and Charlie Weiss were supposed to turn that program around. Four years without being bowl eligible is now a very concerning negative trend.

  5. What quality candidate is going to want the Oregon State job with the uncertainty of Andersen’s reason for leaving still hanging out there?
The fact that nobody has even discussed the real reason publicly will keep this job tainted(or more tainted than it already was)

I think the repercussions of GAs tenure are going to be felt for the next decade as we struggle to ever find a quality replacement who will want to touch this job with a 10 foot pole.

      • Right, we all just assume that we will at least land one of the plan B candidates. I’m not convinced. The guaranteed pay day could be attractive, but if you fail miserably in your first head coaching gig, it could be career suicide.
Who expected a coach with GA’s career W/L record to ever go winless on the road in 3 years and barely scrape together 7 wins total? If it can be explained away as GA having personal issues, it keeps the job at least a little more attractive. But if the reason is more school related, then we have much bigger hurdles to overcome. This is why I think the job will mostly only be attractive to guys in their highlight years looking for a final payday before they retire, or young coaches with no other options because they’re just not very good.

        • Do you mean twilight years?

Yeah, but the danger in hiring a guy like that is he’s mailed it in. If we go with an old guy, it has to be someone who is naturally uber competitive and won’t mail it in. Not sure who that would be.

I think the GA stuff is overblown. Most coaches probably know he’s nuts. If fans do, then his peers should, too.

          • I was thinking yesterday where Wisconsin would be if GA had stayed or were his days numbered anyway. I lived in SLC when he bailed on Southern Utah after one season, I don’t remember anything being made of it at the time. He jumped right back into the arms of loving Whittingham. He is bat shit crazy. He should be thankful he has the Utah safety net.

          • Sorry, but the pittance of the SU HC job doesn’t compare to a D1 coordinator’s salary.

He’d be considered mentally unstable to not make that jump.

Regardless, he quit. Why are we talking about him?

      • Smith or Baldwin should JUMP at the chance at any Power 5 conference head coaching job. Baldwin’s stock is trending down with Cal having another shitty season. Plus, it’s a huge increase in pay. All coaches are ego maniacs and each one should be of the thought that they will be the one to turn a program around. OSU job is not that bad and I’d argue there is more parity in the PAC-12 right now than any other time in the last 6-7 years.

  6. Gaaaaah that was so winnable!
Impressed with the young beaver squad though. I thought they’d lose by double digits, and they led most of the game. Proud :)

      • I hope so. I’m not totally surprised by the loss but I’d hoped they would pull off the upset. When the Beavs start winning these types of games—meaning the early season games against the Notre Dames and Tennessees—then they will have reached a threshold. They’re not there yet.

  7. Gary Andersen might have a future in Buffalo. Their HC benched a pro bowl QB with a 90+ passer rating for a rookie who has thrown 5 INTs and counting.

I think Buffalo’s coach just sealed his fate. What a dope.

    • Bills fan wants Taylor to be gone, traded, cut, whatever. They’re tired of his mediocrity.

But yeah… Peterman is bad right now. And it’s not that he just decided it and stuck to his guns, making it just a bad decision. He did it two days after he confirmed Taylor would remain the starter after his abysmal performance last week.

        • He’s a journeyman QB at best. He’ll never take a team on his back and win. And his legs will go away with age… or end poorly with some freak hit. He’s not the answer in Buffalo. But QB is also not the only issue on that team.

He’s good enough to win somewhere the whole team is sound, like a Dilfer. So he has value as a trade piece.

  8. From Corn Nation:
“Riley is like the parent that constantly coddles their kid and wonders why they throw shit and wear their underwear on their head”
    #TPB

  9. So the names we heard from SBNation are Butch Jones, Jim McElwain, Ken Niumatalolo, and Bronco Mendenhall.

Canzano mentioned Beau Baldwin, Bronco Mendenhall, and Jonathan Smith.

The Dam Podcast seemed to think it was Smith or Baldwin.

Seems like you’ve got to expect it’ll be Beau Baldwin at this point.

    • I’ve been hear Jeff Tedford’s name too. Given the current state of the OSU football program, I think the Beavs need someone with current or prior HC experience. At least that way, the new HC can pull together his staff and take most if not all of them with him. If you go the coordinator route w/out HC experience, the coordinator will have to put together a coaching staff together on the fly and piece meal…..I don’t think that’s an ideal situation for the Beavers…the other thing about hiring a new HC w/prior HC experience, and if he’s currently a HC, he can probably convince some of his recruits to follow him to OSU.

At first, I didn’t like the idea of Tedford, but the more i think about him and his offense, his QBs and RBs developed at California, I think he might be a good hire…The down side is the age factor. Remember, he generated enough excitement about the program that Cali upgraded their facilities. In addition, his teams ALWAYS gave the Ducks fits and he had some good teams too.

      • I’d take Tedford over Smith or Baldwin. Toss up with Mendenhall.

Haven’t followed June Jones enough to have an opinion, but I think a clear cut offensive identity is what OSU needs. Helps the pirate recruit to bumfuck nowhere, should help getting skill to Corvallis.

    • I was thinking about this right when I heard Mora was gone. If UCLA was seriously wanting to bring him in they’d be the obvious choice over OSU.

But it could just be to drive up his price.

    • Wouldn’t surprise me, UCLA doesn’t seem willing to spend unlimited money on a coach and owing Mora a bunch of cash would make a Baldwin hire unsurprising.

Honestly, if OSU is gonna go coordinator Bernard convinced me that Smith is a better pick anyway so this wouldn’t bother me too much.

I think I’d explore the Bronco Mendenhall situation a little deeper before committing to Smith and I’d definitely want to gauge Tedford’s interest as well.

    • I’m not sure why UCLA thinks Baldwin is an upgrade over Mora. Maybe he is, but to pay 12 mil for the buyout, you’d think you had someone elite lined up. Maybe Frost? Chip still maybe in play. It’s hard to imagine they do that for Baldwin. Either way, it lowers our odds, of course, if they’re interested. People are bashing Baldwin, but if he winds up at UCLA and we wind up with someone awful….

      • Pretty sure Chip to Florida is done.

I agree it seems like an odd move but Mora just wasn’t working at UCLA. Job should be the 3rd best in the PAC at worst (behind USC, UW, and just ahead of Stanford) but they don’t seem wiling to do what it would take to make the job that good (sort of like Cal which should be a top PAC job as well) so you never know.

    • Oregon State dinking around to their detriment again. Was obvious OSU’s best move was to narrow the candidates and be thinking of an offer by now before too many P5 openings and price for a coiple of their options most likely to increase.

Baldwin on a 5 year deal would be the most supported deal among all fans followed by a Miles deal. Either if these could have been best implemented by making a decision and then having your best shot at most faborable terms and less chance of missing out on a top target.

UCLA probably has sincere interest in Baldwin but he may not be their top target. Still with Miles yiu sort out the level of intetest, give him a ballpark best offer amd if he balks you got to twll him you’re moving on. Then you may as well get serious about another top target like Baldwin who should have been much cheaper than a Bronco and more likely to be entering the Oregon State job at ideal timing for both him and Oregon State.

      • UCLA doesn’t have any interest in Baldwin, sincere or otherwise, as their head coach. Dan Guerrero would be fired for even thinking about him.

  10. The Chipster to Florida is not a done deal. Florida AD is flying to New Hampshire to try to close on him, but UCLA fired Mora today so they could go after Kelly before Florida gets the contract signed.

  11. So where does Les Miles fit into all of this? Several new coaching jobs have happened since Oregon State’s became available, yet none of them have Miles in their top rumored candidates.
Seems like there are more candidates available than there are job openings. Beavers need to close fast though, before more jobs open and we’re left with the table scraps

  12. Canzano’s latest column tonight said Mendenhall was “very disappointed” he didn’t get the job last time around. I don’t really trust him, but just FWIW.

Also… let’s make this happen. I know most people think it sucks.

Oh, almost forgot, that annoying and cornball chainsaw sound-effect they play on third downs at Reser Stadium? IT MUST GO!— John Canzano (@johncanzanobft) November 20, 2017

    • That’s Canzano revisionist history if you ask me. There was an article out about 5 weeks ago that said De Carolis was set to offer Baldwin the job last time until the GA situation presented itself. It was either the O or Eggers who wrote this but think was the O. No mention of Bronco in that piece. Now he suddenly was runner up when just weeks ago we were told Baldwin was. Someone can find the article cause it was very clear about BDC planning to offer Baldwin the job.

    • Saw a forum last week with some Minnie fans talking how the chainsaw may be more annoying than Northwestern’s cat screech. Apparently they thought it was annoying and then pathetic when we were behind by 30.

        • Yet if you speak out about it in OSU circles, It’s blasphemy. Oregon State fans love that thing for some reason. They say “If non Oregon state fans don’t like it, we’re keeping it!”
          Solid logic

          • The “cow in labor” description of that sound seems more accurate.

Even worse than the sound, as I believe wannabeav pointed out recently, is the often inappropriate timing of its use.

Which OSU circles like it?……The (lack of) ideation crew??

  13. I went to the OSU-ND basketball game today and came away pretty impressed with both teams. ND has a three-headed monster in their guard play and they are very, very good. OSU lacks the Breanna Brown hard-nosed interior player to shutdown shots in the paint. BB would have made the difference today. The other thing that is a little troubling is…this team appears to lack a true floor leader and that’s absolutely critical to the success of this or any other team. Pivec needs to step up and take on that role, but I’m not sure she has the personality to do it. There is a young lady on the bench though that does and that is Destiny Slocum (xfer from Maryland). Unfortunately, she’s not eligible this season.

Tudor played a very nice game, but she is strictly a get your feet set shooter and really doesn’t handle the ball to create her own shots….she’s great at coming on screens though. Katie is a nice complimentary player and will give you some solid defense but a little inconsistent with her shot.

Mikayla Pivec is really dynamic and could be that leader but I don’t think that’s in her DNA…she appears to be the quiet type.

Gulich has the potential….she’s a little more vocal, great finisher around the hoop and a nice 15-17 foot touch. One major draw back in her game is sometime her indecision when she gets the ball in the post…sometimes waits too long to and the defense collapses on her and the offense breaks down.

I like Taylor Kalmor’s game….she’s aggressive like Pivec and decisive too. I think she’ll become an impact player as the season wears on, but I don’t see her as a vocal leader.

Thropay really impressed me….she made things happened and seemed to be all around the basketball with rebounds and steals today.

Anyway, it was a tough game today to lose but they played the #6 team in the country down to the wire. Given the Beavs have so many critical players from last year’s team to replace, I think it’s a good sign they played ND so close.

I went to the OSU-LBS game last night too….it was an absolute snooze fest. Tres Tinkle looked like he was sleep walking the entire game. He had 19 points but it sure didn’t look like the TT I saw part of last season. The Thompson brothers are smooth and Ethan is going to be very, very good.

Eubanks is a stud down low, but he’s not even close to NBA caliber IMO. He doesn’t handle the ball particularly well or shoot from the perimeter (although neither of those are really his role) but he needs to stay at OSU and not jump to the NBA too early….he’s simply not ready. That said, I like the way he finishes around the basket and he’s certainly got a quick first step . All in all, this team might win 15-16 games, but they’re still way too young with raw talent.

If you haven’t watched the ladies play at Gill, I would encourage you to do so. The crowd really gets into the game much more so for the women than the men’s games.

      • Yes Joanna Grymac (sp?) played and is a serviceable replacement.
Washington started and played most of the game, she’s good.

The refs were a factor .. I counted 3 plays that were called incorrectly, and all were against the Beavs, could have made a difference. Called a lot of fouls on the Beavs and very few on the Irish in the first half.

All-in-all a long weekend for us and the Beavs were 1-2 in the 3 games we attended.

        • Washington seems to have a lot of heart, and a bit of attitude; maybe she turns out to provide the vocal leadership you find lacking in Pivec? Problem will be getting enough minutes by avoiding foul trouble.

    • Thoughts on Maddie Washington?

Good point about the crowds at Gill, I know many complain about the old barn but I’ve always enjoyed being there.

  14. Some dude on the Twitter machine is saying that all this is smoke & mirrors & Chip Kelly is coming to OSU, per his sources. If we’re gonna fabricate why not go bigger : Saban wants a new challenge and wants the OSU job

    • A few weeks away would be a disaster.

I think it will be Smith and Erickson will be brought on board as his AHC.

That is where I am putting my bet. Hopefully it won’t be a few weeks before we find out. To me, Monday after CW should be the latest such a move is announced.

      • I get the feeling you’re right, but yuck. Smith strikes me as Helfrich 2.0 without the benefit of Chip Kelly setting the table for him. Working for Petersen is one thing, having to start from scratch and build a program from ashes is not a job for a 39 year old first timer.

    • States he thinks Hall won’t get it, but Barnes will try to talk next coach into retaining Hall…I didn’t realize – or had forgotten – Barnes/Baldwin had some history together at EWU. Egger’s won’t be shocked if there’s an announcement Tuesday on Baldwin…

No mention of Tedford or any out-of-the-box/interesting names.

Though we don’t get to see the details, so far after a very unique exit by Andersen, this hiring process has been pretty underwhelming and boring. Much like Beaver football and men’s basketball. P5 vacancies and hiring seem to be dominated by recycled coaches, with little creativity from the top.

      • Barnes having a history with Baldwin is the only thing that makes sense in OSU looking at Beauner. I’ll buy the “nepotism” angle.

Otherwise, there’s no reason OSU should be thinking we need to hurry before UMass, Kent State or Rice snatches up the Beauner.

      • Creativity likely means boom or bust. Can an AD staring down from VFC afford a bust selection at this point?

A safe/recycled pick is what we will get, because that keeps everyone safe and happy.

        • If it’s a recycled coach with a history of winning and program building I’d be fine with that. Seems like a better gamble than strapping on the next Paul Wulff.

  15. The mentions of Tedford led me to do a quick search of his career. What he did at Cal was pretty good given how dead the program was. Looked like a 7-8 win range with a few 10 win seasons, a few stinkers at 5 and 3-win seasons. He was 1-2 in Holiday bowls, his best bowl. An upgrade over Riley’s ceiling (Sun bowl/Alamo Bowl) and probably more consistent and clearly less nomadic than Erickson (who clearly had a higher ceiling). He could attract skill players, score points, AND have his teams play some D, such as it is in college football. He also generated interest in the program in his tenure at Cal, brought it back to life. He’s got a .600 career percentage.

If he has the energy (he’s not as old as I thought) and the coordinators, seems like he’s worth an interview. Would still like to see something different like the Ohio State U Offensive Coordinator, at least for an interview.

    • Tedford should definitely be strongly considered if interested. I am just not sure he is. He is at his alma mater, making decent money, and honestly has an easier path to a New Years Six Bowl at Fresno State than he would have at OSU.

He was interested last time but I doubt he would come this time.

    • Tedford is a boring hire, but I can see the argument for a guy like that who would be mediocre to good. Logic being he gets the program to that stage and then next hiring cycle you take a risk on a young, up and coming coach. Job would be more attractive at that point. That said, I have a feeling we’ll go with a young guy, either Smith or Baldwin.

It’s high risk, unknown reward. If it fails it’s a 10 year dark period (3 with GA, 7 to recover from this hire).

  16. With all the openings about to happen, osu is probably going to get left with some retread or have to take a huge risk with some unproven coach.

My guess it’ll be Baldwin because they’ll have to settle for him but I hope they can land someone who’s been part of big time winning programs.

And no to Hall staying on staff. If the guy wants to be a head coach, he needs to move around a little bit to get exposure and a coordinator job first. I get that people and the players like him, but the new coach needs to instill a different attitude in the program.

    • I don’t mind Hall as an Assistant Head Coach who works with the Secondary and does the recruiting. Whatever it is he’s done this last 4 weeks, it seems to resonate with recruits, but he needs more time to learn the craft of being a DC under a competent coach with experience.

I bet Hall ends up at Portland State though.

  17. I think it would make a compelling twitter poll to see if folks would like which following combination of Head Coach/ Assistant Head Coach.

    Baldwin/Hall OR Smith/Erickson ?

God this coach search has been boring. There’s such a lack of enthusiasm for me that it almost feels like we’re done with the season already.

    • Is there film on this guy? I mean…at the size and height he seems more like a tweener for 3-4 defense (can anyone tell me why the hell we even run 3-4? we can’t get the big bodies we need for that, yet.)

And 2019 is still a while away…this kid could be an under the radar.

If anything I’ve learned about stars and recruiting is that it’s all a bunch of shit unless a coach can coach.

  18. Surprised nobody has considered Nigel Burton at least as part of a staff at Oregon State. Gotta think he would take a DC role if offered. Guy with Oregon State history, knows the northwest, was one of our better recruiter back in the day. Well connected in the media. Was HC at Portland State for several years. Still young and energetic.
I would think a coaching role would pay better than his media gigs, but I have no idea.
