Beaver Coaches’ Salaries

My issues with it are Banker and Garrett making 505k and 320k, respectively. Why is Banker worth half a million? Can anyone explain how/why other than the fact he’s been there a while and is a Riley insider? And Garrett shows up in year 1 and makes more than every assistant but Baker? Why? Because he had NFL ties? Because he’s a Riley insider? Landsdorf’s salary for that same job was 280k, and that was after 9 years. Side note, but I find it interesting that Eli Manning is absolute garbage with Langsdorf coaching him. Sure, it could be his age or issues with personnel, etc. Brennen and Brasfield seem slightly underpaid and under appreciated, relative to the other coaches’ salaries.

Bruce Read makes a lot for a special teams coach and it’s probably not justified, but I’ll say this: kick coverage has been good under him. This is just from memory, but I don’t remember any return TDs against us under Read, and most kickoffs don’t get beyond the 25. Do you guys remember ever being disappointed over punt or kickoff coverage?

  1. I don’t understand why coaching salaries are an issue for anybody, other than they guys not getting paid. As fans, do we really care how much or little a guy makes? We’re not paying the salary. I care more about the length of contract and the guaranteed payouts which prevent a school from cutting ties with a coach for poor performance.

  2. Disappointed in the guys who kick or punt. Kahut or Hekker were heart attacks almost every kick.

Can’t recall the last time anyone took one to the house vs the beavs. The shield formation and college rules for punts won’t allow any punt returns for long gains or TDs anymore. Kickoff coverage has been fine. Good for at least one kick/punt return/punt block for TD each year.

I think Garret’s salary is likely more market related than experience or anything else. Compared to other OCs, he’s probably getting underpaid.

    • Kahut or Hekker were heart attacks almost every kick.

I agree with that, and that kicking has been bad, but watching other games the kickers in the NCAA are just terrible in general. There are several hundred college kickers per year and only a handful make the NFL. A good example is Oregon–they were a NC contender and have had BRUTAL kickers even under Chip. ‘Bama struggled with kickers recently, etc. It’s just really hard to find good kickers, and teams do not want to use scholarships on them.

Also, college kickers have wider hash marks, which makes kicking more difficult:

It shouldn’t be as hard to find a good punter.

  3. The last return I remember was against USC in 2009(?). But I think recent success in punt coverage has more to do with Michael Morovick than it has to do with anything else.

Kick coverage is spotty. There have been long returns even if not for scores. The opposition certainly seems to out-gain us in that regard on a weekly basis. And we seemingly don’t need a punt returner anymore. It’s just a game of me chanting to the TV, “Don’t drop the fair catch. Don’t drop the fair catch.”

  4. Since very few teams have a coach assigned exclusively to Special Teams, I think Read deserves more scrutiny. Shouldn’t this extra focus lead to: 1) excellent results, and 2) some very creative play? e.g. onsides kicks at unexpected times, utilization of the punters who’ve had good arms for passes off of fake punts, etc.

We know Riley won’t allow creative play so why pay for it? And are we really seeing “excellent” play?

  5. OT: Eggers tweets, “AA degree papers for @OSUBeaversFB DT Kyle Peko are in. He’s taking 2 on-line classes. If he passes, he could be eligible for 9-27 SC game”

  6. I just did a quick search of HC salaries.

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/salaries/

It appears Riley was the lowest paid HC in the Pac-12 last year. I did not search for assistant/coordinator salaries across the conference, so I can’t be sure about this, but I assume the Beavs’ staff is right near the bottom.

Probably common for coordinators to be earning more than assistants no matter where you go, which would explain Banker and Garrett being higher than the assistants. I know Banker’s defenses have had up and down years, but assuming the staff in general is one of the lowest compensated in the conference, I think it is safe to say they are all underpaid. Not sure what the grousing is about, but my knowledge of coordinator pay at other schools is non-existent.

  7. I agree with BeavBlazer. Their salaries are inconsequential. The coach performance is everything to the fan. I have no ability to determine Garrett’s worth as a coach or his value comparison to Langsdorf.

I think that Langsdorf was a good QB coach. We have a lot of guys that were no name talents that are still playing in the NFL as back-ups. That is good coaching. Langsdorf was terrible at play calling. Unfortunately we aren’t getting to see Garrett’s chops at play calling yet. I think that this year will be tough to make an assessment on Garrett as a hire since Mannion is working on finesse points to his game and the receivers are a work in progress with a lot of developmental talent. If next year we really excel at QB and offense in general, that would be Garrett’s work.

OSU is working to improve athletics in general. Baseball is great, Basketball is heading in a direction I like, Football is the wait and see. I get the impression that expectations are being raised across the board. If we have a dismal performance in PAC 12 play, I would expect to see more stress put on BDC to make a coaching change. I think that Riley used up some of his street credit the previous two years losing to FCS opponents. I am just not sure who I would want at this point to come in, nor do I want to have to wait through a few years of growing pains to see if that coach is worth anything. Somehow we need to invigorate recruiting and get the talent to help OSU football become competitive every week.

Some of you business minded individuals should come up with some marking ideas for OSU football. I like the idea of a saying, like what many SEC teams have. (LSU = WAR EAGLE, BAMA = ROLL TIDE, etc). I don’t know if we start yelling TIMBER at each other or what. It starts with grass roots and getting people to want to identify with their support for the team. Little things……

    • I still swear that fucker stepped out of bounds on the punt return. Kind of like the block in the back on the punt return in the civil war that wasn’t called

    • Link didn’t work for me, but Read was coaching. From the OSU site, “Bruce Read is in his third tenure as the special teams coordinator at Oregon State, with 2014 marking his sixth consecutive year in Beaver gear. His previous tenures included the 1997-98 and 2004-06 seasons.”

  8. “My issues with it are Banker and Garrett making 505k and 320k, respectively. Why is Banker worth half a million?”

If we could make trades in CFB I would trade Banker for a bag of footballs

    • If we could make trades in CFB I would trade Banker for a bag of footballs

I wouldn’t. A bag of footballs is like $500 now. Maybe a bag of Walmart composite balls.

  9. OT – man, the value of a mobile QB:

OLive “Power Ranking” of Pac 12 has this note on USC:

” The Eagles piled up 452 rushing yards, led by quarterback Tyler Murphy’s 191 yards on 13 carries.”

It’s incredible what having one more runner to worry about can do to a defense (ask Banker). I wouldn’t expect Woods/Ward to have huge, Quizz-like day against USC though, especially in LA. How USC’s head coach responds to the BC loss and uses the extra time is the x-factor in my opinion; they could come out to play or totally underperform under this guy… hope for the latter.

I do think diversifying the run game even more could make it more challenging for USC late, but it sounds like we can’t expect that without an injury.

    OLive Q&A w/offensive coordinator Garret.

“You said you could need three backs. Could Chris Brown break into the rotation at some point?

“Chris always has to be ready. He’s got immense talent. He showed that last year. He showed in training camp that he can be a really effective runner (and we can) put him in the game. So he’s right there waiting in the wings. We can put him in if anything happens to the first two guys. And, also, some of the young guys, as well, are coming on. We really feel good about that position.”

Brown’s OSU’s genuine, DI speed threat, and it’s too bad he doesn’t get at least several carries late in the game to exploit it.

  10. The Pac-12 is really making an effort to move teams away from that 7:30 time slot

    Beavers Football ?@OSUBeaversFB 13m

The @Pac12 has announced that OSU’s game versus USC Sept. 27 will start at 7:30 p.m. PT & broadcast on ESPN. #gobeavs

  11. Saw that incoming pitcher, Christian Martinek just had TJ surgery over the weekend.

Also, my cousin has been getting alot of pub recently,, but just had to have TJ surgery as well. He just took his first official visit at UofO. Sounds like teams still want him, but this setback will cause him to miss his entire senior year. Really hope he ends up anywhere else…
