Do You Trust BDC to Make A Good Hire?

I’m iffy on it. He did say he won’t be hiring anyone from Riley’s staff (but that could be because Riley is taking the “core” of his staff).

I wrote Bob with these suggestions:

  • Bronco Mendenhall
  • Bryan Harsin
  • Matt Wells
  • Scott Frost

That’s my short list. It’s his job to research their contracts not mine, so I am not sure how realistic those guys are. Keep the names coming and maybe someone intrigues me more than these guys.

Extend it and you get some less interesting guys.

  • Troy Calhoun (I’ve always respected this guy)
  • Jeff Casteel
  • Will Muschamp
  • Justin Wilcox
  • Jack Del Rio
  • Beau Baldwin

etc.

Then the retreads like Erickson, Bellotti, etc. No thanks.

    • I really don’t want him. His career record is terrible. There is no reason to think he wouldn’t be another CR. I imagine a situation with a few more 4-star recruits per year and playing street ball

      • I’d be in favor of Baldwin on one condition: do what Wayne Tinkle and Scott Rueck did and go out and get proven D-1 assistants (Kerry Rupp/Eric Ely) with along with some who have Pac-12 experience (ala Gregg Gottlieb and Mandy Close). It has worked for the women’s team and I think it will work for the men too. Hope Baldwin isn’t the guy though.

  1. Angry,

If BDC makes a good hire what do we have to be angry about anymore? Will you change the site name to nicebeavs? Happybeavs? Tolerantbeavs? Inquiring minds want to know…………..

  2. Why do many on this board only think of coaches who coached/coach at small schools? Why not go for a proven big name? Dennis Erickson came, though it was coming off a firing, but he had won a national title.

Riley has got us looking for diamonds in the rough, just like him recruiting. Did he have that effect on us? Are we all Riley disciples now?

  3. A lot of you guys like Beau Baldwin. Have you watched any of their games? I.e. is he sound fundamentally? Or it is just outscore the opponent. That won’t work. I have a bad feeling about him. If they go that direction it better be a very short contract.

  4. This wont happen, however the one coach that I think would be a perfect fit is Kirby Smart. He’s the D-coordinator at Alabama. His current salary is 1.25M. Since most teams in the Pac are running zone read/spread offenses, what conference has had the most success against spread teams? Regardless we need a coach that understands how to recruit fast, strong athletic players on the defensive side of the ball. I just don’t see coaches from Utah State, Boise and pond chicken coordinators being anything different than what we currently have.

  5. Actually, I trust BDC to make good hires. It’s what he does in everything else that is straight trash. Managing resources, managing contracts, expectations for coaches, crowd experience, facility management, all of that is subpar.

If you look at the success of most of the non-revenue sports, OSU has been having a good year. But how we keep that going is at the hands of keeping coaches and continually improving facilities, which BDC isn’t good at. I refuse to give him credit for the basketball center when that was a CR idea, subsidized by the Campaign for OSU. I really wish he’d retire and hand the keys to Massari.

      • He also has Tinkle and Rueck on his watch, so can all that. And my examples happened far more recently. CR should have been jettisoned two years prior, but it’s the contract management I’m talking about that’s far more important.

        • Tinkle is an open case and certainly not a slam dunk success. Women’s basketball doesn’t even really count for anything in the grand scheme.

You’d be much better off had BDC resigned today in order to totally chart a new direction. Oh well, your problem, not mine.

          • Sure, in the financial scheme it doesn’t mean that much but it certainly is exciting to watch them play now and only football and basketball matter at all? I care a decent amount. Anyway, the condescending comment in unnecessary because I literally said what you said (he should retire) to make me sound stupid “You’d be much better off..” foh

          • You wanted me “to can all that” about BDC making bad hires because of one and maybe 1/8ths recent success hiring basketball coaches, when the previous two were unmitigated disasters. Just thought that was mighty curious.

A football hire is a whole different animal.

  6. BDC has a decent record on “do-overs,” – WBB and MBB – correct? Riley II just went 5 years too long.

But mo, I don’t trust him. I think it’s 50:50 he makes a productive, defensible hire. Than the contract terms he negotiates need to be evaluated.

  7. Has BDC had any bad HC hires besides CR? It seems like osu performs well in most sports except football and basketball. One of which is trending up.

  8. A lot of BYU fans are frustrated with Mendenhall at BYU. Frankly sounds like a similar situation to Beavers fans and Riley, or Cal fans and Tedford. I would be disappointed to see him hired
