Home Football Definitely Do NOT Hire These Coaches

Definitely Do NOT Hire These Coaches

196

1. Jack Del Rio — classic value trap. NFL success and a big name make him alluring, but you do not want to get involved with a father-son relationship when we don’t know if the son can play. Luke Del Rio has looked awful in limited time. With Jack there, he likely wins the job. We don’t want another incestuous relationship.

2. Brady Hoke — Basically the guy is Riley reincarnated. Look at his record and temperament. He just finished ruining a prestigious Michigan program. Also, would anyone be excited?

3. Ed Orgeron — 3-21 conference record. Horrible coach. I don’t care if he can recruit.

4. June Jones — this can’t even be serious…?

5. Dennis Erickson — ^ see above.

We need an exciting hire. This doesn’t necessarily mean a young guy. Bronco Mendenhall, for example, is older and would bring excitement. But these guys would not. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

If people don’t believe me, was I right on Riley? Yes I was. I would be right on these guys, too.  Very disappointed with some of the names gaining steam.

    • Went 9-4 this season and 9-5 last season. In Ogden, Utah. They play 3rd fiddle behind Utah and BYU and maybe even Boise St to some extent. They were down to their 4th string QB due to injuries vs Boise St last weekend. Let me ask you and the rest of this group this question. How do you think Opie would fare in the Mountain West Conference with the USU roster and a 4th string QB. Think they’d win 9 games?????

    • He’s young and entering into what should be some of his best years so OSU would be starting his stint at the perfect time. He plays with a mobile QB who is a good balance of capable thrower but able to pick up yardage and first downs by scrambling and with some plays designed for that. Todd Orlando his defensive coordinator is also on the rise and was Top 10 in several defensive categories this year in FBS. Wells 4th string QB he played much of the year with is a black athlete who is a bit like Tim Alexander.

I am confident in the Pac-12 he will recruit well along with Orlando. These guys will relate well with players and recruits for the length if their deal. Seem like a natural pairing with Tinkle in making OSU fresh and interesting with good coaching for several years to come in the modern Pac-12.

  1. Angry, where did you see that Riley isn’t taking Banker with him to Lincoln?

I haven’t seen anything of the sort. Most of the Nebraska reporting seems to indicate that Banker is a lock, and Garrett might come with Riley as well.

  2. Didn’t Orgeron go 6-2 as interim coach at USC after Kiffin was fired last year? Rumor was had he beaten UCLA he’d be the HC at USC instead of Sark. So he can’t coach? Or is it the old, hell I could coach USC to a 6-2 record with the talent they have.

    • One worry I’d have with Orgeron is the guy looks like he just barely on this side of cardiac arrest. Would hate to see a coach die on the field after cursing out a ref or player.

      • No one can top Mike Stoops. Dude turned beet red and looked like he was gonna have an aneurysm every time a call went against him

  3. not trying to be cute but I think we need a hire similar to what Riley represented in 1997: a prominent coordinator at a school in the west (read: up and comer familiar with Western recruiting area). I think Wilcox fills that bill the best (and lower buyout than Wells)

    • are we really gonna go down that road again? Hiring assistants? How’d that work out for the hoops program in the last 15 years? Football is your cash cow. Money maker. Supports all the programs that lose money. This needs to be someone who is currently a head coach who can win. Not another fucking assistant. No to Wilcox, no to JS. Let them be someone else’s guinea pig

  4. Was it ever established that Riley was offered the USC job? When the talk was going on, the shit had not hit the fan, correct? I always thought it was odd that Riley turned that job down, but it was a good move in hindsight with all of the penalties.

  5. Did you leave early and miss the 80 yard td drive Del Rio lead against Stanford? He’s looked mobile enough to extend plays in a collapsing pocket, made quick decisions with a quick release. Throws with some zip too (showed the ability to hit that quick slant mannion hasn’t hit since cooks sophomore year against UCLA.) IMO Not fair to say he’s looked horrible in the very limited time he’s had. I think the father son thing would be awkward and can lead to extra fan chatter and potential locker room problems. Another perspective on it is if the coach is worth shit the son actually has to go above and beyond to prove they aren’t playing because of the relationship. Del rio also said after turning down USC he’s looking to be an NFL head coach again. Probably not even an option and only being floated because of the connection to jr.

    Hoke no.

What’s the beef with Coach O? Did great with a USC team as an interim.

    • Yes I did leave early and missed that, but I heard it on the radio. In general, he has not looked good. I was a Luke Del Rio fan in the preseason, but now that I have seen more I’m iffy about him. Adding his dad to the mix just isn’t good. If the dad is already coach and the son comes into the program later that’s a better situation.

      • I don’t blame you for leaving early. I was glad we were having satellite issues in central oregon due to the weather just so I couldn’t watch.

      • Wells is good. I don’t know if it’s the offense or what, but he has a hard time keeping QB’s healthy. Chuckie Keeton has been hurt more than he’s played the past couple of years.

        • I could live with 4 years but 6 is too long IMO. I actually like Wells better than Baldwin now. Wells is originally from Oklahoma. Wondering if he’s LDS? Please no Bronco!

The Wells YouTube video shows a coach that’s really engaged. His personality seems geared towards coaching and recruiting. Looks the part – good looking and fit. He’d do well in Corn Valley.

I hate that DeCareless will be involved with this hire. Trust that Ray won’t extend his contract in ’16. The $500K buyout for Opie must have made the Huskers chuckle. What a complete tool of an AD.

  6. One other name I want to throw out again as I did in an earlier thread. Minnesota’s Jerry Kill. Beavergopher prolly knows more about him than I and he did have Minny a Wisky victory away from playing tOSU in the B1G title game. Seems like it would be a lateral move but Minny also seems to be in the same boat as OSU. Beavergopher your thoughts?

      • Kill’s name has/ had been thrown around for the Neb and Michigan jobs. He is a really good coach and honestly if it had not been for his health concerns, he probably would not been available when we hired him. He would have been the perfect coach for Nebraska. His health is still the big wildcard and I don’t see him leaving unless the administration f’s up with our facilities plan. I believe he is very grateful for the support the U gave him with his health crisis.

Facilities wise, OSU has much nicer digs than Minnesota. The indoor facility was built in the mid 80’s and is a disgrace. Water leaks through the roof and if a punt hits the roof it knocks off the insulation which falls on to the turf. They have no training table and eat in the building hallway. They announced a 190 million comprehensive facilities last spring. The upside here is that this is a huge school in a very rich metro area with a lot of Fortune 500 companies. The new AD has been cultivating relationships with these companies got Land O Lakes to hand over 25 mill to kick start the academic center and nutrition center. Yesterday afternoon it was leaked that a Regent that had recently passed away, who was an ex big timer at Cargill, left 15 mill in his will to be used towards the new football facility. # yesterday great day to be a rodent!

Kill knows how to build programs and has worked his his way up the coaching ladder with success at every stop. A good hoops analogy would be Bo Ryan at Wisky. The only question is if he can adapt his offense and develope a competent passing game. QB play has been very poor. The two losses to Ohio State and Wisky were there for the taking with just average QB play.

  7. Does Riley have ANY connection to Nebraska? The thing I can’t get over is why Nebraska would want him? I feel like I’m missing something here and I’ve probably watched 95% of every mintue Riley has coached in his tenure. I could give two shits about personality and recruiting, I’m talking poor in game coaching and organization that costs your team games. Did Nebraska watch any film?

I don’t know who I want to replace Riley. I’m nervous about Baldwin, FCS coaches can be hit or miss. You guys can laugh, but I wish Dennis Erickson was about 5 years younger.

  8. They want him because the last guy was a jerk and they lost donors. Solution: hire nicest guy in football. Really he is a massive dick, though. Joke is on Nebraska, big time.

  9. What I would like to know, is home come there aren’t any big donors writing checks to AB. Come on, we practically ran Riley out of town. #Relentless&right.

    • I think it was the Faux Riley twitter. Think about it. Faux Pelini and the day after one of our own created the twitter, Riley is hired by the school that fired Pelini? Ironic? I think so. And kinda fucking scary too. Hope that dude doesn’t have voodoo dolls or a ouija board

  10. I don’t think I could deal with a coach named “Bronco.”
We already have a mayor named “Biff.”
Grown up men should have men names.

  11. Also I just got a text from a family member that claims to be in the know about a title IX investigation looming over the rape that occurred in 1998. Could have something to do with all of this and Riley leaving. He also could be blowing smoke up my ass. He is a duck fan afterall

  12. Comment section here is interesting: http://www.vanquishthefoe.com/2014/12/4/7335487/BYU-football-coaching-search-bronco-mendenhall-oregon-state

BYU fans think Bronco might be gone, and say OSU is interested in their DC.

    Then there is this:

Bronco always talks about needing to coach at a place with a “purpose” or a “mission” or a “uniqueness about it.” To him, OSU isn’t that.
    — Jay Drew (@drewjay) December 4, 2014

    OSU has no purpose.

    • Purpose? Do they mean BYU playing as an independent scrambling to find opponents to fill their schedule? Having Utah drop them off of their schedule? Like older OSU fans who see everything through the prisim of the 28 season losing streak, BYU fans see it through the 1984 National Championship and have unrealistic expectations for the program. Mendenhall feels unappreciated at BYU, OSU could do worse.

      • My buddy who’s an ex BYU LB and was a season tix holder told me that Bronco sets himself up by saying Natl Championship every year and doesn’t know how to adapt… He’d be a safe hire but he won’t move the needle. Much rather have the guy up the road.

  13. Massari is running the OSU AD and hired Tinkle, are the rumors on Blitz. BDC in bad condition I guess? I don’t want to start rumors, but I signed up for their 2 month trial and see that.

      • I think he’s going to be the next AD and why he was brought back. I know, thank you great kreskin for your wonderful knowledge

    • I think local Portland radio is throwing that out there regarding BDC. I even heard that he might be “let go” in the near future, but I find that hard to believe.

    • Angry, wasn’t Tinkle hired about a month before Masari came back? Makes me think he wasn’t involved with Tinks…

I think Mark is a much better front office focused AD than DeCareless but Ray should go national with the search when we finally get rid of Bob the Destructor. I’d expect he’d make the top 3 and if he wins out then fine but promoting within without looking at other candidates is dangerous. Andros and Anderson may be extreme examples but that didn’t work out well and took us down a lot of years of losing. OSU’s culture has always been too lazy and non aspirational. We make a great hire and we could have a nice run in both the major sports in a few years.

    • I was going to ask if that is an apple to apple situation because it seems so preposterous, but then again you have BDC involved. I think Riley’s buy out was structured to decrease over time.

    • I think that the buyout is great. MR did a lot for OSU football and he shouldn’t ever have felt stuck here. Would have been a shame if he had a huge buyout and felt financially stuck at OSU while continueing to coach uninspirerd football. I think Nebraska wouldn’t have paid a huge buy out.

    • He should be let go with that boneheaded decision alone. That’s as bad as the naming rights for Reser. No wonder we have to pay down debt with TV money. Opie gets an ironclad contract with a buyout for $12M and we only get about 3% of what he would’ve gotten if he bolts? The Husker AD must have thought he was bargaining with a child. I still think we got the better deal and that Opie is given a bus ticket out of Lincoln in 3-4 years but DeCareless is completely clueless. BTW, who the hell is our General Counsel? Do we even use an outside firm to write and look at these weak ass contracts? C’mon, please start acting like an institution of higher learning in a big time conference.

  14. Many think Riley is going to hire Orgeron as DC and Frost as OC. Imagine that? That’s the type of stuff we’ve been saying he needed to do here for years.

      • They’re saying Frost is from Nebraska and has ties to Riley. Honestly I’m not sure about all that. Riley would somehow mess it up even with those goes on his staff.

      • Frost is a Nebraska alum. I could see him returning to Lincoln in the same capacity. Opie is a helluva lot older than Helfrich. Could be a chance to prove his worth to his alma mater when Opie is either 1. sacked or 2. retires

allegedly Frost didn’t even get a sniff on this hire

    • That’s the big speculation on Portland sports radio…..Frost comes with Riley to help him “understand” Nebraska culture. Riley develops Frost into a head coach…..transition to Frost in about 5 years. Riley retires and rides off to San Antone.

  15. OSU lacks mission. I often felt that way with Riley. His statements were too casual and implied he had years to find identity, take small steps etc. I want a coach willing to say what he really thinks and sell Oregon State as a legit rival to Oregon in the Pac-12. Riley’s comments were so vague they didn’t even mean much.

Bronco not right fit as too much of a retread. Harsin or Wells then Baldwin and Wilcox. This needs to be a fresh start that smells of spring in the air. Hope we get this hire right and that the culture changes to a more exciting one. OSU must be more willing to make a statement.

  16. I remember seeing pac12 coaches contracts in past threads. Specifically including UO head coach had a bonus for winning civil wars. Can we please push to get some incentive bonuses included this time around. Instead of just winning season/bowl game appearances?!

      • but hey, I’m sure there’s folks in Opie’s corner saying, but but but the ducks have beaten the leg humpers 11 straight times. We’re only at 7. We’re better than the leg humpers! Yay!!!!

  17. On an unrelated note, are there any updates regarding fund raising total for Valley stadium upgrade? I found an article in Aug that said we were at low-mid 30’s out of the 42? million needed. I’m no Reser, but I want to do what I can to help.

    • You say you’re no Reser? Forget that, you’re not even a Matt Moore! :)

I feel like opening up the pocketbook, too, but I think I’m going to wait to see who BDC pulls for a new hire…

  18. This is the 2nd most premier conference in all the land and in terms of coaching could even be the best. Oregon State should look at itself as like Auburn or Mississippi State. Spend some on this hire but get it right. The next 6 years could be very cool if dobe right. Give a coach with a plan the reigns, see program become more vogue with stadium improvements to boot and get in the hunt for Pac-12 North titles and making our own trip to Levi’s Stadium. Have a plan now to finish this decade strong, burgeoning and in the Top 25. Places like Miss St and Ole Miss are becoming cool in the SEC and same thing can happen for Oregon State in the Pac-12. Have a feeling BDC announces this hire on Christmas Eve.

  19. Another interesting name is Doug nussmier, young guy, west coast ties, hired by Saban at Bama only to be let go because kiffin has been an nfl coordinator. Granted, he didn’t do much at me-shee-gan. I know everyone doesn’t want an up and comer but I believe he was fast tracked for a head coaching gig.

    Any thoughts?

  20. Will the site be renamed if Bronco is hired?

I agree with your list of no’s but I like Baldwin as the cheap candidate – not sure what our finances look like

    • I was initially in the no on Baldwin camp but I’m somewhat receptive to the idea. Gonna try and find some vids of EWU to watch for the time being and keep my trap shut about him

    • I didn’t put Baldwin on the list of no.

He is proven at the DII level, but I don’t know how to project him. The lower level guy who would have interested me was Lance Leipold. Baldwin to me is harder to project, even though he coaches at a higher level.

  21. Florida made out Well in the McElwain buyout arrangements:

Florida: Jim McElwain will earn an average of $3.5 million per year over six years. For the buyout, Florida will pay $3 million to Colorado State over six years, and McElwain will pay $2 million to the school. In addition, CSU will play one game at Florida between 2017-20 and be paid $2 million. McElwain’s buyout at CSU was $7.5 million. Former head coach Will Muschamp earned $2.7 million in 2014. An introductory press conference is scheduled for Saturday.

So they are only shelling out 500K a year to cover 3 million of it. Then they are making McElwain pay 2 million through his salary. Part also us an appearance fee which they might spend 1 million on anyway without this. That all adds to 7 million so 500K was wiped off. In Florida terms it really is just the 3 plus an extra million more for CSU when playing them, so more like 4 million.

If Oregon State reduces Wells buyout to 400K a year for 4 years for 1.6 million, then gets Wells to throw in 800K we are at 2.4 million. Pay USU Wells’ 800K he paid to us to play a game in Corvallis and then have the final 300K wiped off as part of legal deal. That would be an exact OSU equivalent of this Florida deal that is very manageable.

    • It’s too bad the Resers have gone silent. I guess the rest of the family doesn’t care about football?

2.4mil is too much for Wells without someone stepping up.

      • Its not 2.4 million a year. I am breaking down four 400K payouts OSU would add to its costs. We even should get 500K from Riley’s buyout. I think this 1.6 million is all we might have to pay if done smart. Then Wells pays 800K of his own buyout which makes it 2.4 of the 3.5 total. Then we give that 800K to USU in addition to what we might normally pay a team like USU to come to Corvallis. That makes for 3.2 of the 3.5 million buyout satisfied after 4 years and the final .3 is wiped off as is common when arrangements are legally finalized.

That extra 400K for the first 4 years effects a bit what we might pay him but not that much. We still could start him at 1.5 million in Year 1 and finish him at 1.7 million in Year 5 and also still be able to reward 9+ wins with at least a 400K bonus. Those are just the costs of doing business today and investing for success and relevance. OSU can afford this and needs to take its major sports more seriously for better health across all athletics.

  22. Agree. Hire a coach rather than a name. No new statues are needed on campus and buzz is just a temporary high for addicts. Nebraska hired a name with lots of buzz in the sports talking heads business.

  23. I have a list (in no particular order)
    1. Tom Heyman
    2. Pat Narduzzi
    3. Scott Frost
    4. Beau Baldwin
    5. Matt Wells
    6. Mike Norvell

  24. Riley says he going to take some younger staff with him. He was talking about whoever was responsible for the idea of water balloons at practice.

  25. Unfortunately, the only question that interests me….Why in the hell would Nebraska be interested in this guy ” game managing” from Saturday to Saturday when they need to get to 11 wins a season?…….will remain a mystery.

Otherwise, as someone said from the national press…”this is an absolute no brainer for Riley…better players, better resources and much weaker schedule.

    • Love to see how Banker does in that environment; no recruiting excuses, intolerant fan base. According to Goe’s (?) article on Banker, Banker’s wife mentioned how hard the fans were on him; turn it up several orders of magnitude now. So glad Riley is taking Banker so BDC can’t promote him.

  26. Some choice quotes from a Nebraska board:

“We got Mr. Rogers as a football coach.”

“WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT HIS POCKET IS FULL OF WERTHER’S ORIGINALS?”

“he looks a little tired to me but i guess he probably hasn’t slept a lot this week”

“He reminds me of an old guy who talks your ear off at the auto parts store. Not that thats a bad thing.”

  27. Riley: “I got a lot more from Oregon State than they got from me…for me to make this move, it just seemed like the right time.”

  28. During the presser, somebody asked their AD about Sunday or Monday and he said he meant to say Monday, not Sunday.

From the presser and from Eggers’ column, it sounds like BDC and Ed Ray told Riley he was on the hot seat on Monday morning, and Riley was on the phone to Nebraska immediately afterward.

I would bet that Riley instigated the contact, or his agent did.

  29. Why do I find it hard to believe NU reached out to Bike on Monday, and by Wednesday night everything was signed sealed and delivered?

He decides to leave a fat paycheck and cushy bike ride to a job that included no effort and no expectations, except to stay out a 29 year losing slide. His wife is completely happy to pull up roots and travel to Lincoln. No time for considerations. Barely time for talking let alone contract negotiations.

    That guy’s a fucking liar.

He was already in talks with Nebraska, gave a half assed coaching effort to the players in preparation for the game against his in-state rival and mumbled his way through the post game presser knowing he was going to make a change in venues this week.

    Fuck Mike Riley.

    • Not wanting to let my natural cynicism interfere, I’ve tried to put aside similar thoughts but what you say occurred to me, as well. And why, would the Nebraska AD cold call Riley? I do wonder if this affair had been going on for longer than we know.

      • Obviously Riley was having conversations prior to Monday, but monday was the day the rest of the Nebraska AD got involved, so yes, Riley can say NE contacted him Monday- everything prior had just been personal conversations between friends.

  30. LOL. Those poor fuckers are in for a shock.

A dedicated special teams coach, AWESOME!!! How about a dedicated QB/Receivers coach? Fun December is correct sir….

  31. Hi guys!

I’ve been moving all week, and I just started two new projects. So I’ve been out of the loop for a week.

    Did I miss anything?

  32. Best guess (i.e., pure speculation) as to what happened, based on facts that are starting to emerge.

MR met with BDC (and perhaps others) on Monday. MR left that meeting upset and angry. Acting impulsively, MR reached out to Nebraska to say he was interested but only if Nebraska would move fast. Nebraska — having just been turned down by Bielema — reciprocated impulsively, and agreed to move fast. A deal was struck. Riley gives a middle finger salute to OSU administrators and fans who — in his eyes — failed to love and appreciate him. Nebraska lands a “respected” PAC-12 head coach who also happens to be the anti-Pelini.

Marry in haste, repent in leisure. This shotgun marriage won’t end well for Riley or Nebraska. The only clear winner here is OSU. Hip hip hooray!

    • Another great evaluation by Silver. Heres a question. Will Riley bring his open door practices to NE? And will practices at OSU now be closed door?

  33. Here is my case for Will Muschamp over anyone else. OSU needs a big fish coach and he’s available. He still wants to be a head coach. His defensive credentials are awesome and defense wins championships. His defenses are almost always in the top 20 nationally. Here’s how his defenses have ranked nationally in the past.

Team Year Yds per game Scoring D
    LSU 2002 8 15
    LSU 2003 1 1
    LSU 2004 3 14
    Dolphins 2005 18 15
    Auburn 2006 19 7
    Auburn 2007 6 6
    Texas 2008 51 18
    Texas 2009 3 12
    Texas 2010 6 49
    Florida 2011 8 20
    Florida 2012 5 5
    Florida 2013 8 15
    Florida 2014 9 24

He may have had more talent but so did the offenses he faced. I call that a wash. He’s the first guy they should call. I think he could succeed here without the pressure of the donors and media at Florida. The only issue I really see is that he’ll need to make a good choice for o coordinator since that was the main reason for his downfall. Recruiting is a big strength for him.

A hire like Muschamp would be a statement hire that OSU is someone to be reckoned with. WSU made that kind of statement with Leach. Did anyone think they could land a coach like him? No.

A hire like Wells says that we’ve accepted that were a small school and can’t compete with the big boys. Wells is the 2 star recruit that looks good but only has one power 5 conference offer and it’s from OSU but we believe he’ll develop into a 5 star recruit. If Wells was such a good coach, then shouldn’t he have been strongly considered at Nebraska or Florida or Michigan? Doesn’t sound like any of those schools are contacting him. Everyone sounds like Mike Riley when describing Wells or Baldwin for that matter. These are 2 star recruits in the coaching world. Muschamp is the top 50 recruit. It’s time for OSU to go bigger.

    • Bill, I respectfully think youve been fed too much Disney. SEC teams only play a handful of good teams each year. They have at least 6 games a year against pansy offenses. Dont forget when looking at those numbers that the SEC plays 4 non-conf games and that the bottom half of the SEC doesn’t stack up too favorably against the bottom half of the pac. I like the Wells option, not because we are lousy second fiddles, but because we value a motivated and improving coach. Too easy for an experienced coach to hang his hat on his record and not value personal career needs to be impressive while at OSU.

    • you say no to Wells but want Muschamp? The guy goes 28-21 at Floriduh in 4 years. With hella better talent than OSU. I get it. You want a guy who does less with more. That’s another Riley

  34. My list:

    1. Lance Leipold – Hey! He now has some D1 experience!

    2. PJ Fleck – HOW do you pronounce that?

    3. Tim DeRuyter – Talk about doing more with less. He would probably pay us just to get out of Fresno.

    4. The OC/DC route – OC would be Josh Heupel, DC would be Brent Venables

  35. Matt Wells is who I think would do best at Oregon State. I see him getting some 8 win seasons after a couple years in. Wilcox also slowly climbing in my mind. I want a talented recruiter and a guy with lots of good years ahead of him. Like Orlando as defensive coordinator with a Wells hire. With a Wilcox hire you go out and get a strong OC and I think he could.
