First game thread of the Gary Andersen era, bitches! Let the party start early.

Not much to add. I’m changing my 46-13 prediction to 45-13 because 46 is a tough number to get.

Go Beavs.

    • Since you are pro MR, you should be listening to CBS College Sports Radio if you can find it…….a Nebraska caller just called in and said….”the one thing that EVERYONE in the country agrees on is that Mike Riley is an extremely intelligent football coach, he will find a way to beat BYU”.

    • I was hoping MCM was going to be the starter, but let’s see how they both perform. I hope MCM wins it after at least the Michigan game.

  1. A few early mistakes but then full on kick ass football on both sides. Reser will be rockin’! 38-10. The new era begins baby!!! God I can’t believe it’s here. Beers are on ice and wings are cookin’!

    God I love football.

Cheers to a great season guys!

    Go Beavs!

  2. Freshmen can perform…..it may not last but a bunch of frosh at SMU on offense are rolling all over Baylor right now. 14 points in the first 7 minutes….last year 0 points and 67 total yards for the whole game. Let’s see some of the same for the Beav freshmen.

    • Experience is one of the most overrated things. It’s a nice luxury, but hardly a requirement if the players have the right mindset. I said this before the last basketball season as well, and that team played well, and also with the baseball team, and they did just fine. Experience = overrated.

    • It looks awful on TV.

This is why I said playing at PSU would not be a bad idea. If you have 30% of capacity, is that worse than playing at PSU? They should schedule game 1 vs a cupcake each year up there. Give PSU a cut of the gate. Everyone wins. I’d rather see the Beavs playing at PSU with 80%-100% capacity than Reser at 30%. This is just pathetic.

Edit: you’d hope people trickle in. The 5:10 start is awful.

  3. Less than ideal weather, game before school starts, and right at the start of a long weekend when everyone is traveling elsewhere is combining to leave this crowd a tad sparse tonight.

    • That was very nice. Definitely looked different. Under Riley you see one tackle like that per year. Strong made a great tackle right before that, too.

  4. One of the things the Utah announcers talked about what the Michigan game was the first in a long time where the Utah D got no sacks.

  5. No Beav penalties in Q1, defense is playing hard and smart so far. DeCoud looks like a great pick up. That trick play was a TD against many a Riley team.

  6. I’ve seen more open field tackling this game than any entire year under the previous staff, that’s a positive.

QBs aren’t being sacked repetitively, that’s a positive.

Getting some runs going, yeah, not so good.

  7. The QB situation is pretty much what I thought. McM throwing nice balls and a pass threat; Collins throwing poorly but a run threat. I’d go with McM and mix Collins in on running downs.

  8. It may end up being a long year with this offense but the D is soooooooo much better prepared and coached. It amazing to see the difference in tackeling and fundamentals.

  9. When was the last time we saw a Beaver DB break up a flanker screen? They were usually 9 yards off of the line of scrimmage under “Jive Hands Banks”.

    • I was just going to say another supposed strength of the team….running backs…….looks off so far. Slowish, missed holes, missed blocks….was that Woods who ran right past the blitzer who nailed Collins?

    • Storm looks like shit. One of those last runs up the gut he could have gone left, he could have gone right, instead he went straight ahead right in to the back of his own line.

Then he was supposed to pick up one of those blitzers that got StS and instead he ran into his own guy again.

  10. I know the announcers are infatuated with “Air Collins” hurdling, but when he is in there the field shrinks — the D only has to defend 15 yards, so they can take more risk. I don’t like the flow with Collins in there. It’s one step forward, two back for the O because he can’t throw.

  11. Defense looks better than offense but still has plenty of work to do. Not overly sold on Baldwin’s offensive style yet. I was part of the group that preferred Andy Ludwig to bring more of a Wisconsin style.

  12. We’re in a defensive struggle with Weber State. This might be a loooooonnnng year!

Very surreal to not see Biley chewing gum and hand jiving up and down the sidelines. Obligatory sentimental tear figuratively running down my cheek.

  13. Strings of holding calls and drives ending with field goals. I hope it’s just that old Riley smell hanging around the apartment and they haven’t finished repainting yet

  14. Was there supposed to be blocking on that Collins run or is misdirection supposed to create the opening? There were three unblocked Weber defenders ready to tackle Collins.

  15. Defense looks like they are determined to play. Offense can’t see to seal off the edges they need to in this offenense, hence the penalties and lack of yards going to the outside. I think McM is a better choice right now, but I’m surprised at not seeing more bubble screens and short routes to get the ball in our receivers hands… Maybe we are not showing the entire playbook for Michigan?

  16. Just because the o line has experience, it does not make them any good. Why do you think they brought in two jc guys late? Coaches watched film from last year. This is why the staff made such a huge deal about strength and weight lifting in the off season. O line , no line.

  17. Am I blind, or are these telecasters way off base? I thought McM was the superior QB. He got fewer reps, but he would have had a long TD pass were it not for the PI, and was 2/3 otherwise and looked good throwing. Collins looked bad throwing. A QB has to throw. What am I missing?

  18. When is the last time a Beaver D held anyone (no matter the division) to 76 yards total offense? Just need to punch it in the end zone a couple of times. I’d take a 27-0 win, with a dominating defensive performance. Need to score on the first drive of the half to get this going in the right direction, maybe a turnover or two on D.

  19. All the talk about off season conditioning caused me to have my hopes up and think the OL could carry the offense until the QBs got some experience. The way the play has gone so far I’m not so hopeful. Thank goodness the Beavs aren’t playing a big school in this first game.

  20. Watch out guys, I sat too close to the TV while the broadcasters were talking about Collins and got some spooge on me. Gonna have to hit that with some Shout

    • You could see Baldwin getting pissed that they weren’t going fast enough. Brown needs to get a little tougher, he should have pounded through that leg tackle.

  21. @A_Jude: Browning is the first true freshman QB to ever start an opening for @UW_Football and first true freshman Chris Petersen has played at QB.

    • Sideline radio reporter said he asked a coach about injuries and got a vanilla response like everything is O.K. but the reporter didn’t ask specifically about Peko.

I’ve been watching trying to see if he’s been in in the 2nd half and haven’t seen him but then the cameras don’t spend a lot of time on the DL.

  22. Seth Collins can’t throw. Even his pass to Bolden was a wobbly spiral. Harbaugh is probably laughing watching this.

The media will be up in his jock, though. It’s a very bizarre dynamic.

  23. On 3rd down Jim Wilson said intended receiver was not the primary and that STG dumped because of rush. Looked to me like he locked onto the rec’vr from the start.

  24. That was a Riley-esque three and out. If those are called roll out passes, they condense the field and limit options. I want to see McM back in there and better pass play calling.

  25. McM isn’t more than a marginally better throw than Seth at best. Maybe 5% better. Let’s drop the he can throw and Seth can’t schitck.

  26. That was a stupid play call from your own five yard line with a rookie QB who didn’t even look like he noticed the receiver was blanketed. You either run the ball out of there or you throw a bomb to Villamin or Bolden.

  27. I’m actually shocked Collins has gotten so many more opportunities and replaced McM after that one bad throw (granted, it was bad). Collins literally cannot throw the ball against a competitive defense. When he plays a decent defense they are going to send the house every time and he’s going to get killed. I was really hoping to see McM get an actual shot at the starting job to see if we could get a guy that could actually pass as the starting QB. Hopefully Baldwin knows better and I’m wrong but I think we’ll be lucky to get 4 wins this season.

    • That’s exactly right. I am shaking my head watching this…

And the fools falling for Collins because he’s athletic. If Collins starts all year, I’m moving us down to 3 wins. His game is very predictable, and frankly, brutal to watch.

      • Yet they won’t put in the guy who threw a 30-40 yard pass right on the money…that PI call might bury McM. GA not seeing all this is very disappointing. He just wants to start his guy, and you have to wonder if all this QB talk was just a motivational technique. Very manipulative.

Whatever, live and die with Collins. He will be horrible vs good Ds. And now all this valuable playing time for McM has been squandered.

        • Completely agree. Obviously one game is a little premature to get too critical of Andersen and his staff, but it’s pretty disappointing to see the staff fall in love with a guy from day one without giving legitimate competition a chance. Seems very “Rileyesque”.

        • He looks like the type of player that’ll get injured in a hurry though. Thought he snapped his leg on that run earlier. McM will get his shot.

  28. When you look at the stats this could easily be a 35-0 game. It’s a fairly dominating performance statistic-wise. Finish it off, Beavs.

  29. I do not know who is the better qb is. One game will not give us an answer and Baldwin will not give up on MM based on this game. Yet anyone who judges a qb by the tightness of the spiral is mistaken. Leadership trumps arm 150 % of the time. This game plays out exactly as I expected. However, weakness in kicking game is punting not fg kicking.

    • You mean, what have you done for me lately, because I am an ADD fan? A fres man qb making a major mistake will, sit, watch and learn. this is not a soccer trophy game where self esteem is the end all. You make a major mistake, you then put your butt on the bench. You sit, you burn, you brood and you repeat to yourself that this will not happen again. In the old days we called this learning. In today’s society ya’ ll want no consequences for crappy decisions. Everything must be even, even when it is not.

      • And if that was the speech beforehand instead of, “I won’t pull you if you make a mistake,” you wouldn’t be a liar.

Do y’all have any consequences for that crappy decision?

… I mean other than getting called out for it on a blog then having someone go off on the people calling you out for it… for something totally unrelated?

I would normally agree with the unrelated sentiment you do go off on though… except who the hell calls a screen of any kind in their end zone? It’s a screen. You’re in your end zone. You have to throw it. And you can’t just ground it. All your linemen have released the D, and they’re coming after you. You throw to a certain space if you can’t see your target, and he’ll be open because it’s a screen. Right?

Three times they ran that inside screen. Weber was all over it each time with progressively worse results. There is a school of thought in coaching that you get right back on the horse that threw you, or the horse wins.

  30. What’s tough for McM is that it was a shitty play call, you can’t expect a freshman to be aware enough to eat the ball in that situation.

    • You can’t eat it. You’re in the end zone. This is why the call is really bad. The split second decision is what in this situation? You’re supposed to trust the call. Your target is not only open. He’s so open that he has time to pivot and wait for his blockers to pave the way. Right?

      • I didn’t see the exact formation on that play, but a lot of times the WR screen won’t even have a secondary option. That alone makes it a rough call near the endzone. They were probably thinking it was a safe pass, but what they failed to realize it was also a predictable pass without options.

  31. Good to see MM smiling again. We will need both QBs to be focused every game this year. Keep attitudes positive. Every game will have a few odd bounces. Team feels much more juiced this half. Go into Michigan with some confidence.

    • Can you imagine if Riley (not that he’d use a TO) would have called that TO to negate the int? So good to see an engaged, human, wide-awake HC on the sideline!

  32. ESPN reporting Collins is starter moving forward!

@LombardiESPN: It’s official: “Seth Collins is the starter moving forward” – Oregon State coach Gary Andersen.

  33. the good…..

    The defense
    Tackling
    Garrett Owens

    The bad

#50. Must be the number, burn it
    Penalties
    Passing game
Offensive line. Got better later in the game though

  34. What’s going through everyone’s heads:

Collins: Fuck yeah I’m the starter now!

McMaryion: This guy’s gonna get himself killed in the next game, then I’ll be the starter heck yeah!

Riley: Sale on Big Red gum, neat deal

  35. Seems to me the question is not whether or not STG is a good QB or if 3M is a good QB; it is: WHICH ONE IS BEST? And, today, we did not learn the answer to that key question.

Blame coaching decisions, poor O-line play which kept the game too close early, or….dare I say..nepotism (as in STG is Andersen’s guy?).

    • Collins was clearly the superior athlete. Also has energy. I didn’t like how MM reacted to being pulled. Hung his head and pouted. Fuck that.

  36. Reser was dead. It just didn’t have the feel of excitment. After a couple of offensive series I think more than a few people began to realize just how good Sean Mannion was. Honestly, that was the most boring Beaver game I have ever attended.

  37. Chris browns vision is shit half the time tho. He missed a huge hole up the gut and instead ran into his blockers. Storm fuckd up that screen pass that was set up beautifully. 3 blockers and woods against 2 defenders and gets tackled. A rb can’t let that happen.

  38. I was at the game, I had fun and I think we will be just fine. Seems like a lot of teams hsve sloppy 1st halves of offense in 1st games. 150 rushing yards from a QB W/2 passing TD’s and zero turnovers is a neat deal

  39. Go Beavs. This was a great game, 26-7 for the Beavs, truly wonderful to watch. Did you get to watch? Glad I wore my old Beavs hat today that I sure that brought them luck along with your orange jersey. They led only 6-0 at half but with great defense with only one miscue for only 1 TD for Weber State in the second half to keep them in the game. They used both true freshman at QB and neither did much in the first half with a strong finish by Seth Collins at QB. Seth Collins came out in the 2nd half and marched down to a TD in the 2nd half and continued to great play with many great plays in both passing, handing off and rushing so I think he is now the probable starter with a very high QB rating. He was also the leading rusher for the game and kind of reminds me of Marcus Mariota. I was very impressed with the OSU defense that was somewhat lacking last season that kept them in this game throughout. Great coaching also. Next week on Saturday is against Michigan at their field. It’s going to be a tough one. Go Beavs!.
