Oregon State vs Portland State

GA’s seat seems to be heating up really fast. Better get a win here.

35-7 good guys.

Luton will be impressive (like 225 yards, 2TD, 0 to 1 INT) and lure people into thinking he’s good. But the run game is how we win this one. Short game with a lot of runs and a few big passing plays. At least that should be the blueprint…you never know with McGiven & the Bozos.

  1. I expect Luton will throw for 265+ but it will still be a better focus on the run game with actually 50% of plays as runs. Not the 60% GA says he wants and where we probably are our best but an evenly split 34 runs and 34 passes today.

    • I’d like a staff who can go and execute a gameplan. So if tgey want 60% runs they go do it and see what results. In most casee I agree it would give us our best chance in tge Pac-12. I’ll go with 36 runs to 35 passes today. A millimeter past 50% only. Just don’t think McGiven knows how to execute a plan if it calls for 60% run. Beavs win 38-17.

  2. Luton goes 185 yard 65% completion 3 touchdowns 0 Ints. Only because the run game slices them up and his throws will be mostly short field type. 41-21 beavers.

  3. TD Vikings!!!!!! So much for Angry’s ‘This D will be fine.’ That looked very easy for them. 3 plays, 79 yards in 1 minute.

Andersen’s seat should be scorching right now. Unacceptable.

  4. At what point is Andersen’s seat hot?

When you hire a defensive guy as head coach his defense shouldn’t look so pathetic in year 3. And only have about 15 fans showing up for the game isn’t good either.

  5. I’m just mystified by how much our D seems to have regressed. DeCoud was a stud and Chappell was really good too, but our front 7 is the big problem.

On paper we should be much better as we were decimated at LB last year. I really don’t get it. Definitely not a good indication of Clune’s abilities…

    • I think the problems are bigger than play calling.

The defense seems to be horribly coached.

GA can’t make the same mistakes as Riley. Need to look outside his circle of friends. They aren’t all Dave Aranda.

  6. Sitting here in the terrace (which is amazing) and a beautiful day. Really missing Mcm right about now. Luton is not a good decision maker…

  7. Our defensive line play is embarrassingly bad and our play calling is idiotic. We’re not going to win any games unless those two problems are addressed.

    • Agree but also got away with one. Could have easily been called there. He was early and turned the receiver. Rarely see it called in that situation but I expected it.

      • Well, whatever, PSU has gotten away with a lot of holding, especially when running outside. White’s play looked like good enough timing to make up for that crap.

  8. Beavs got away with a likely interference there. That gets called 75% of the time. PSU blew it on 1st down there. Should have been a 6 point lead for them again.

  9. Hey beaver fans, hope you’re liking the Luton and Garretson dual QB show. Stay tuned for when Garretson gets into a groove and I pull him for Blount. Portland State will never see it coming!

  10. It frustrates me that the QB shuffle seemingly at random didn’t backfire cause now they are going to keep going back to it like its a thing that works :(

  11. Does anyone think we will ever in this game line up the qb over center and run our big running backs up the gut. Hell Nall behind Johnson up the gut all day.

  12. Why do you not go for it with 12 seconds? Try to get a few yards for a FG. If you don’t get it PSU has like 6 seconds left. Such bad coaching.

  13. This is a joke. Luton makes terrible decisions, the play calling is atrocious and are defense is getting by only because PSU is shooting themselves in the foot. This coaching staff needs replaced.

  14. What’s funny about Luton is he’s horrible on the deep ball. His best pass is that underneath drag route. Last week he was horrible on deep balls and again this week. Underthrows and/or totally behind the WRs and/or into double coverage. We’re told the deep ball is why we brought him in. He looks a lot like a game manager, ironically, and this vs two bad teams. Garrettson looks feisty out there. I’d give him a shot. I don’t feel like the team responds to Luton for whatever reason.

Run D was awful but pass D looked pretty good.

  15. Better QB play would obviously help, but I think it is way down the priority list. We have two gigantic glaring issues, and if we don’t get them fixed QB play becomes irrelevant.

    Lack of offensive identity/cohesive playcalling
    Pathetic run D

    • QB play is an issue (and would have been regardless of who got the job in my opinion) but to me its not top of the list:

      1) Lack of defensive coaching talent
      2) Lack of defensive line talent
      3) Lack of offensive coaching talent
      4) Lack of head coaching talent
      5) Poor QB play

      That’s my list.

  16. I thought it was interesting that the announcers made a big deal about GA telling the team that Luton was the starting QB and that it was just a special package for Garrettson. Seems telling to me that all is not well in Beaverland if you have to emphasize that. Sounds like a divided team to me.

    • Agree, and kinda fits with what I see, that the team just doesn’t seem to respond to Luton. The energy level went up with Garrettson in the game.

Psychologically speaking, last year they rallied around Marcus, and GA yanked him away. There’s probably something to that in them not embracing the new toy. Plus he hasn’t shown any ability to throw the deep ball that they brought him in to throw outside that one pass to Hernandez with broken coverage. Maybe one longer pass to Bradford last week as well. That’s it. The rest is all to RBs and short drag routes. Game manager routes.

  17. What I’d like to know is why PSU is getting away with so many holds. One of these refs a PSU grad or something?

A few of those runs were awful D where the Beavs were so slow to react to the guy bouncing outside, but I’d say at least 50 yards came off clear holds that I could see on TV, yet the ref couldn’t see 2ft away on the field. Lame.

    • I think Andersen was overhyped. I’m not gonna lie and say I wasn’t excited to get a guy that big time schools wanted but I did prefer an offensive guy and still do.

Baldwin seems to be calling a good game at UC-Berkley right now. Still think he’s the hire that I’d make if I had the power. And since I don’t think you can get him to leave Cal to be a OC in Corvallis I’m 100% fine with offering him the head job in 2018 if we don’t see dramatic improvement. 3 years is enough to evaluate a coach, so far I am not impressed.

  18. Beau Baldwin & Justin Wilcox exceeding expectations on road vs Norrh Carolina. Up 28-24 late in the 4th.

How many here would have taken this combo if we knew Baldwin was good with being an OC in the Pac-12?

I would have. A good OC is paramount for production in this conference. Of course BDC doesn’t even think of that and tries to pit them against eachother instead of using their strengths.

    • Impressed by them, and their coaching staff. They are going to be the feisty, bowl-bound upstarts in the North that we thought the Beavs would be.

    • We have been told Cal is our lone Pac-12 cupcake this year. Right now I have to kean towards us losing that. Baldwin vs Clune seems like advantage Cal and McGiven and GA not shaping up that well either if things don’t change here in a hurry.

  19. I wonder how all these running backs feel about not getting any carries. Johnson and Pierce 2 carries and Tyner 1. I would love to see QB under center with 2 backs

  20. Well, it could certainly have gone a lot worse, and I thought they responded well to PSU coming at them aggressively with a lot of confidence, but we also got super lucky that PSU made some mistakes and turned it over.

On defense, we look like a JV squad that is still learning both our individual positions, but also still developing awareness/football intelligence as a team. We look a lot younger/inexperienced than we actually are, and I think that’s exacerbating how poorly we are playing on the defensive front. We aren’t able to leverage any advantage in personnel because were a tick slow still thinking about what we are doing, we aren’t able to be aggressive at all as individuals or as a team on defense. Some of that is understandable (kinda), but a lot of that is really suspect and falls on Clune.

On offense, what a mess. The philosophy (or lack thereof) behind our scheme/play-calling is really bad, and even the most causal of observers are recognizing it. Even if PSU is stacking the box as CSU was, we should still be plowing into them for 3-4 yards on almost every 1st/2nd down. Why in the world we are putting so much pressure on Luton to carry the offense when we are so stacked at running back is a goddamn nightmare and I’ll never understand. We should be coming right at them with Nall, Pierce, and Tyner, even if they are stacking the box. They shouldn’t be able to keep up with us physically, and if they can, that’s a huge problem.

Luton I think is doing about as well as I expected, although he’s made some poor throws. The real problem to me is that they are asking him to do way too much with how they are calling the offense. Garretson obviously looks more poised and confident in what he is doing, and you can even see the team respond to that energy when he’s in there. Sigh.

Hot seats for Clune/McGiven. Steadily warming seat for GA.

  21. You’d think someone would tell the announcers when school starts at Oregon State, 2nd time he has said classes will be in session for next week’s game. No, they will not.

    • His big boy talk is just talk. He was over his head in Madison. When he screwed with the culture and program that Alvarez created, Barry yanked on the reins and CBNF looked for an out. I hope your AD bags this guy and hires someone like Norvell from Nevada.

  22. PSU baits Luton and McGiven perfectly and Luton throws another dumb interception.

Garretson should go in next. Beavs staff making it hard to root for them.

    • Yeah Garretson will be a much better game manager against Minnesota then Luton will and that game will be seen nationally and sear into people’s brains as far as OSU. I know GA doesn’t care about game managers but the rest of Beaver Nation who wants to win definitely should.

      • Garretson ain’t gonna help them win with this defense and terrible play calling. The team simply has no QB with the talent to overcome this poor coaching and lack of defensive talent (and McM wouldn’t be the answer either).

At least we got a Civil War win.

        • Yep. Arguing over 3M, DG, and Luton is pointless. None of them are a Pac 12 caliber QB. Particularly not good enough to score in the 40s each game, which is what they need to overcome this defense.

    • What has he gotten right? Defense sucks, coaches suck, can’t get a QB…..The list is quite long on what he has done wrong.

His future should be in doubt. Should have hired Wilcox or Baldwin (or both as Cal did).

  23. Holy Shit! Are you guys noticing how the PSU RB’s are carrying the OSU defenders for a couple of extra yards on most carries and the D-Line is getting pushed back. I thought these guys got fucking “stronger” in the off season? WTF???

    • Honestly, I think PSU is pretty good for an FCS team and I wouldn’t be shocked if they make the playoffs, doesn’t change the pathetic show today.

Even escaping with a win will likely be more due to errors on PSU’s part than anything the Beavs do.

  24. PSU literally walks into the endzone. Beavs lucky they changed their mind about going for 2 or game would be tied.

Patience folks. Building a team that can fight for National Championships takes time and respecting the process. Sometimes FCS teams are very very good. Let’s see what Bama does against them before we make judgements.

  25. Tyler of course was told nothing different this week about running kickoffs out of the endzone. Loses 15 yards. He will continue to lose yards every time he runs out of the endzone. Up to 53 lost yards so far on the year. KEEP IT UP IDIOTS!!!

  26. GA is reckless. If x doesn’t work, he quickly does y, even if y is worse. A perfect example was Baldwin. But he does it with players, too. He keeps doing this until he divides the team over players or players get pissed and leave. Zero chemistry on this team. It’s a bunch of guys trying to get their own touches, praise, and yards for NFL scouts. No team play.

Team actually rallied around McM and had chemistry. GA was too stupid to see that and recognize the value in it and game managing and actually had the nerve to downplay those things.

  27. PSU causes fumble and has it deep in Beaver territory.

Go Viks! Running it out of endzone sets up PSU for great chance at 7 points here.

  28. Hire a coach for the triple option. Screw it. It’s not like Beavs will ever be playoff contenders. At least give other teams something to think about.

  29. Wow, we are going to lose.

It will be interesting to see what happens on Monday…firings? Demotions? QB change?

Garrettson just shit the bed with his opportunity. McM sure would be nice right now.

  30. It’s hard to know if the offense or defense is more inept.. They both have their big boy pants on fighting hard to out do one another

  31. Wisconsin fan here. I check on this forum every once in awhile to see how you guys feel about GA and see how he does building a major conference program. One thing I can bring to the discussion about lack of strength on the D-line: GAs philosophy was always speed and quickness in the weight room. Wisconsin fans didnt like the change in philosophy and the lack of strength was apparent throughout the B1G schedule.

    • Funny, he was push how weak this team was and that they needed to be a lot stronger, really never said anything about speed or quickness that I can remember.

    • But when he came in, he kept saying Riley’s players lacked strength and they had to get those numbers improved. He seemed to comment more on strength than speed…

Was he this awful in managing QBs?

      • He was. Always rotating quarterbacks and trying to force in the one that “fit his system.” Seemed to have a negative impact on the team. Sound familiar? He had some success at UW (east) but he rubbed a lot of people around the program the wrong way.

        • Were you one of his backup QBs?

Would you say my comment above about him being “reckless” is accurate? I mean he ditched a well-established OC after a few games last year for some bozo who is much worse and had no experience.

          • I wasn’t, just a name I use because everyone always touts the Backup QB, right? As far as being “reckless” I think that is an apt description. He is impatient with those around him while preaching patience for him to build “his” team. He always seemed to deflect blame onto ANYTHING else while he was here.

        • BNF brought in McAvoy to try to “fit his system” but in turn he messed with the culture Barry created. Stave out played McAvoy in fall camp and he’s not the starter for LSU? BNF seriously screwed with Stave’s head. The only way BNF succeeds is if he gets a QB coach and stays out of the QB situation. You know he won’t.

      • IMHO Riley’s main issue was he was too loyal to his assistants ie Banker. GA just wants to blame the players. At least at the non-skill positions, players are for the most part a commodity. It comes down to coaching as to how they develop. Both lines are getting dominated by a FCS school. This is not ok.

    • Thanks for stopping by. We call Nebraska “those poor bastards” for taking Riley. Are we your “those poor bastards” for taking Andersen?

  32. Can we stop fucking around and throw the ball? I know everyone wants to run but our pass pro is better than run blocking. Our run game is inept with too many people touching the ball to have rhythm.

    • As I write this a big passing play comes in. Also, let’s stop with this villamin business. He isn’t a good route runner or an effort guy. Let’s cut the shit with Tyner too. He runs slow and scared. I think our offense has real potential but we have to commit to our weapons.

  33. Why are we running the ball with DG over our rb’s? Also, last week everyone was complaining about passing the ball too much. We needed to pass the ball because Csu was loading the box which is what Psu is doing. Well, you guys are getting what you want. We’re running the ball and this is the result.

  34. You really need a charismatic coach these days to compete. GA is so the opposite of it Helps with recruiting, team unity, getting good assistant coaches, almost everything.

    • But GA is a defensive specialist. Don’t worry we will make up for it with Tyler running the kickoff out of the endzone.

  35. Seriously, This defense, specifically the defensive line, is awful. Brandon Arnold is quite possibly the worst safety to start for us for now 2 years?

Not even sure if I want the beavs to win, its sad. Reminds me of sac state. Or eastern wa

  36. Nice chatting with you guys for a bit. I will definitely be rooting for you guys next week against PJ Flecks self-promoting ass and his hated Gophers. Good luck!

  37. If the Pac-12 announcers are correct, Gary said he would be more hands-off with the defense this year than he has been in the past.

He should reconsider that, if he isn’t already.

    • No, just because Andersen might not be the right hire doesn’t mean its time to fall into the “Riley is the best we can get” trap.

Dennis Erickson was successful at OSU.

I think Beau Baldwin would be successful at OSU. Maybe next year.

      • Yep, I think we can get an up and coming OC. But given our track record on coaches.. GA will still be with us in 2027. I hope I am wrong. GA should go back to being a DC. I can see why Wisconsin pushed him out.

  38. By the way, anyone else seeing the incompetence on display by the PAC-12 network? They listed OSU’s 3rd down conversion rate instead of PSU’s on that last drive, they listed the punt as “3rd and 3” instead of 4th and 3 right after, and the stream keeps cutting out on me (and I know it isn’t on my end, because I’m using Sling and that’s functioning just fine).

    • They didn’t even have the camera(s) on a couple of plays in the first quarter. It was an amateur hour broadcast. Did you hear the announcer say “PSU going for the win” when a FG would just tie the game?

  39. Starting to seem like Garretson will be the starter next week.

Look, even if you hate Luton (and he does not appear to be the answer) I just don’t see how you can think Garretson is the answer either.

This is just a shit show of a team.

  40. Wow.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen this bad of play-calling and personnel management from an OSU staff.

I never thought I’d be so nostalgic for the Langsdork days.

  41. Also, our guys don’t understand basic zone concepts. Play man if they don’t understand zone. We should have better athletes which makes man viable. Then again they don’t understand pursuit angles either.

    • Coaching, coaching, coaching…. this is all on the staff. It is a statistical fact that our guys are bigger, stronger, and faster. edit:typo

  42. Andersen 2:43 from being run out of Corvallis wity Viking going ahead on the QB run TD.

Hope Isaah Crocker doesn’t cancel his visit for the Minnesota game and 11 Strong unis.

  43. The Gary Andersen Era has been proven an abject failure. He cannot or will not manage coordinators and quarterbacks. Time to move on ASAP before he craters the program back to the dark ages for another 25 years.

  44. Well, I nailed the Beavs scoring 35. Way off on giving up 7.

    My Luton Stats: 225, 2td/Int. Real line: 235 1TD/1INT

    Pretty good there.

Moving on, we have an awful team. The biggest improvement is supposed to be week 1 to 2. Yikes.
Still think we beat MN. That middle of the schedule is going to be a nightmare.

Not sure a win is a win, but winning this game was certainly better than losing it. D is very young and should improve as the year goes on. My big issue with the D is they look undersized vs CSU and PSU. Especially the LBs. Is it me or did they look bigger last year? Really need Evans to get on the field.

This entire staff will be on the hot seat the rest of the year. Beav fans want to see improvement, and it’s not there. A lot of bad decisions, too.

  45. Takeaways from this game:

Evans better finish that Advanced Bowling Pilates Class of his ASAP and get on this team

Andersen needs to take more charge of the defense again

Replace McGiven with Dave Baldwin. Worth a shot.

Luton needs to learn how to tuck and run. Nearly cost us the game with that risky flick pass on the game-winning drive. That being said, 1:1 TD:INT ratio is an improvement over last game. Hope he keeps improving.

All in all, I’m glad we won, but hope Andersen has enough sense to see we need MASSIVE improvement for us not to embarrass ourselves against Minnesota next Saturday.

    • Exactly. Commuter school’s backup QB, who was a converted WR, almost lead a game tying drive with a kicker who had never stepped on a football field.

  46. That should shut up the “defense is fine, Luton sucks” crowd. The D just gave up 515 yards to an FCS school and it wasn’t 117 degrees on the field or played in altitude.

  47. Well, that shit show is over. I feel like the D gave up close to 500 yards, anyone have the official stats yet? How does a commuter FCS team have better line play than a fucking P-12 team?

  48. YUCKY…. that is the only word that describes that game. If any of you run into Gary Anderson you should tell him we want players that wear mens pants and play competitive football. Start the coach search now.

  49. I’m homestly having a hard time seeing how we win another game this season. Both D and O line suck. Qb is scary. GA and all coaches seats need to be on fire right now. I also blame our admin for doing a poor job of hiring our head footballl coach. Can we fire them too?

    • O line played decent today, I don’t know what game you watched. And thank BDC for the hire, I don’t think there are to many people to blame that are left.

  50. Portland State outgained OSU 515-389, but went 2 of 4 in the red zone, missed two extra points and failed twice on two-point conversion attempts.

Make those 4 extra points instead and PSU wins outright. Also 1 of 4 and a FG would have won outright.

  51. PSU d line looked much more athletic than ours. All our dudes are fatties who can’t move or get off blocks. This is going to be a travesty. Whetzel is the only guy capable of a pass rush and that’s from OLB. I would switch the scheme to virtually a 4-3 that would allow whetzel and bright to play off the edges with Hungalu- Hughes Murray- Willis at backer. Aydon- Kalani- Titus- Pritchard- napoleon- Saivea all rotate Between tackle (occasional end for Titus)

Only way this d line looks half way decent otherwise.. the fact that this wasn’t seen in fall camp is alarming.

    • Not the ones who played against Michigan today. If not for two gift-wrapped pick sixes, they looked worse than anything we put on the field so far.

  52. The season is not over obviously.. Maybe they play better.. But of ALL the alarming things we have to worry about I would argue that after THREE years of recruiting (and you are the D-line coach) GA shouldn’t have a D line that got totally bossed by a Portland State team..

    We were physically OUTMATCHED

    How is that possible?

  53. I didn’t bother to read through all the comments, but since this is the internet where my opinion needs to validated with everyone else’s, I’ll share it. Beavs D line sucks a donkey’s ay hole. They were blown off the ball all game. When their RB hit the line, Beavs D line was two yards back. I don’t know why they bothered to pass. Let’s soak up yhis “victory”, it might be the only one. Oh yeah, Luton can only throw to Togiai. Garretson looked better since he can at least run. Luton runs like Mannion with a bum knee.

  54. I attended the 1st half of the game, had to leave due to it getting too warm & listened to the rest of the game on broadcast.

    Notes:

If this game is sign of what season will be like — this is going to be a hard & difficult season. Best hope is that all phases of the team grows, and grows up quickly.

Watching seems our defensive line/linebacker crew was porous, and absolutely lacked consistency on 3rd down, even on 3rd & long? I don’t have official stats to look at, but I think PSU 3rd down conversion percentage was pretty high this game.

I also felt confused by the offense’s identity; the team can not rely on key defensive penalties to propel themselves down the field — was at least one if not two long drives where this happened. Worse, being unable to capitalize on points when the ball is placed favorably in the opponent’s field initially will wound us badly in some of these games later this season.

Didn’t hear Jordan Villamin’s number called much if at all, not sure if lack of targets or just had terrible game? Someone else needs to step up immediately.

Togiai will be helpful this season.

Impressed by running effort I saw by Artavis Pierce & Trevorris (sp?) Johnson; felt their play was passionate? Ryan Nall ground some away, but offensive line not getting a lot of push or big holes. Shouldn’t run blocking be easier to do than pass protection?

On defense, players to expect good contribution are Kee Whetzel, David Morris & Manase Hungulu.

Lots of basic errors. Poor tackling? Taking bad angles?

    Passion.

I feel like this team is missing their passion overall. A bit of what they had from last season. They need to find it.

  55. I don’t understand why we’re running misdirection before we establish anything. This two count mesh point is why we never have a hole. When we just hand the damn ball off and run north and south, we get four plus yards. Instead we have to do this funky dance in the backfield then race these tiny teams to the edge so we can dance there for another extra yard… or a positive yard.

Just run the damn ball. How hard is this? Snap the ball. Give the ball to your RB. Watch your RB run through a hole near where the ball was snapped. Do it all again.

But be sure to pass on third down after actually doing this and gaining four yards per run up the gut.

    That doesn’t piss me off.

    • I agree. The long hand off/read option stuff is useless without a QB who can run the ball. It works with Garretson, its just letting the defense adjust with Luton. It would be diffrent if luton pulled the ball and ran or (God forbid) threw a quick mid level pass after getting the LBs to commit to a run.

  56. The D line wasn’t getting any consistent play until midway through the 4th. There was a point where the backers were starting to find space instead of back-filling vacated spaces or over-pursuing. So I finally see some hope on D. I think it must be a conditioning thing with them. It looked like Elu got a second wind, then other D-linemen and backers started making plays other than five+ yards downfield.

It wasn’t going to help them overall in this game. But now they have some tape to look at that shows them they do know how to play correct D. They didn’t have any of that going into this game.

  57. Luton threw for 72% today. What’s better then elite? Super duper elite? And we hit 56% run offense. Man were getting closer to totally awesome elitness every game………

  58. Wow, the atmosphere at Autzen is so nice. Fans making insane noise.

Opening kickoff is returned for a TD.

They make us look so bad (except for the snot/piss uni).

  59. OSU’a biggest problem is this football isn’t watchable. Poorly executed schemed, executed, and boring.

Fans problem is Andersen isn’t likely to soon address coordinators, and Barnes is unlikely to really hold Andersen accountable. Andersen isn’t Barnes coach Barnes is Andersen!’s AD. More Utah inbreeding….

OSU is another coaching cycle away from competent, consistently competitive football. IF they hire the right guy,

Give Andersen one more year to prove himself, then if he doesn’t, pursue someone like Jonathan Smith or. Cal’s OC.

    • I say if the 2018 recruiting class doesn’t fill needs(DL, OL, dual-threat QB, and LB, safety) that can play right away and compete immediately, then next year we won’t be any better than this year. I say give Anderson the boot before we make fools of ourselves against tOSU next season. At least get the defense better that can cover a flipping spread team! I’m tired of spread teams getting more than 350 yards in a game. We need to hold a team to 175 yards rushing and passing in order for us to have a chance to beat an Oregon like spread team.

  60. Nebraska gives up another TD and are losing. Oregon INTs S.U and are looking to pull away early.
Oregon D looks pretty bad. That’s the good news, but this looks like an easy win. Oregon once again much smarter than us in scheduling a cupcake week 1.

    • To be fair, OSU did schedule PSU week 1. They were taken advantage of with the moving of the CSU game without due compensation of some sort. As the old adage goes, “if there is no cupcake on your schedule, you’re the cupcake.”

  61. We also need to recruit some faster receivers. We don’t seem to have anyone that can beat an opposing DB in a foot race. Luton can probably throw the ball 70 yards but our receivers can’t get there before the defense does.

  62. Seems like the team doesn’t have passion or a true fiery leader on the field. Last year they had Decoud, Chappell on the defense and Harlow and Seth on the offense. Would sure be nice to get Seth and Evans on the field.

  63. As ugly as the win was today, I think the matchup with Minnesota actually plays to our strengths. They could only score 17 on Buffalo, which bodes well for our leaky defense. The offense has some life in it and we’re playing at home. It’s not inconceivable that we move to 2-1.

  64. I’m not as down on Luton as many on this forum. I don’t think he’s a savior but he can throw a really nice ball and appears to move really well in the pocket with his eye’s downfield. The pick he threw today was only off by a little. He had Pierce behind the defense and only needed to put a little more air under it. The back-shoulder throw to Hodgins on the touchdown was actually a very nice throw. He checks down a lot. He uses Togiai. Are there some ill advised throws in there? Sure (the one on the sideline on the last drive was questionable) but sometimes you have to try to make a play in the context of the play that was called. I’m more concerned about the receivers not being very good at getting open.

    • He’s just not very accurate. The deep balls he tried to throw to Villamin were way behind him, just asking for an INT. He almost missed a wide open Togiai in the 4th, too. Yes the TD pass was well placed, but the mix of good and bad makes him mediocre.

My only hope for him is that he’ll learn quickly what he can and can’t do at this level the more experience he gets. We certainly saw quick improvement from MM that once he started getting game action last year.

  65. My big problem with this team so far isn’t Luton, but a general disappointment in the personality of the team from a fan’s perspective. GA spent 2 years tearing down Riley’s holdovers, promising to bring toughness, discipline, aggresiveness blah blah blah. So far this year looks like a blend of Banker’s stuck defense and Mannion/Canfield type qb led team. The team was resilient to win today but I doubt that better things are in store for the rest of the season. How close is GA to completely losing this locker room? It looks like some guys are not focused at all, or working as a unit.

  66. USC gave up 263 yards rushing to Western Michigan.

Nebby’s D looks like crap for the most part, too (they get an INT as I type this).

    Oregon’s D looks horrible.

Every game I’ve watched this year has had horrible D.

    • There’s so much holding going on. And it’s not the “you can call holding on every play if you want” type holding. It’s the grapple hold by every down lineman and TEs and WRs stretching jerseys at the point of attack type shit.

College football is almost unwatchable because of it. Add the CTE stuff, and I think the sport will be dead soon.

      • But why believe me?

I’m guessing I’ve been talking to climate change deniers for the last decade. I guess that due to recent answers to recent problems.

I have a really hard time feeling bad for Texas right now. I left Texas because of Allison. They didn’t listen. Then they told the rest of the United States of America that we could go fuck ourselves. They especially told us this when nature beat up on the East Coast.

Then we have to watch the same fucking Texas politicians who would deny suffering Americans the relief they deserve from the richest country in the world stand up and tell us that FUCKING TEXANS COME TOGETHER IN CRISIS BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE DOES?

Fucking fuck you for taking the immediate and necessary actions of neighbors everywhere helping neighbors everywhere for your fucking regional political divisiveness.

You and your Texan GOP cohorts fucked the rest of the world. Now you’re just fuckers in a fuckfest.

        Fuck you!

        And we’ll help you regardless.

Because we’re not you… which is to say we’re not Texan… apparently.

I’m ashamed of my birth state in so many ways. This one has been had. But it’s stil some really bad hypocrisy. And they know they’ll get cover because of the crisis. That just angers me more/

  67. The fact that we are not making bowl games is hurting our program. I think that is the most important thing right now. Changing conferences (Sun Belt or Conference USA) may be the best option to solve this problem.

Here me out: we can win these conferences year in, and year out. Once in a while we might go undefeated. If we go undefeated, then we are guaranteed a New Years Six bowl and a good payout.

    • That’s not really that bad for a Duck. I’ve seen worse on this very site from them. This one is probably only two sheets to the wind and bored because of their body bag game.

    • The only teams that concern me are Arkansas State (which is decent almost every year) and Troy, which seems to be steadily rising. Given our current facilities, we can pull recruits away from these teams.

It might be worth a shot. We simply cannot compete in the Pac 12.

      • I guess that was better.
        ?
        You made whole sentences.

And it about something really really important.

I guess that’s why your name is what it is.

Because j is a factor. I mean, it’s a factor. It sounds nothing like Jennifer Lopez’s newest scent or reality show.

When you can’t make an argument for the rational, attack the irrational.

What is your political position regarding the Nazi sympathizer Donald Trump?

        • If we’re talking grammar, Jack, then yours isn’t much better. You cannot start a sentence with the word “and” or “because”.

Donald Trump? He’s a con. He reminds me of one of those late night commercial spokesmen trying to sell me shitty showerheads for $19.95.

Also I am being serious about moving conferences. OSU was so successful in the 60’s because they could pull recruits from farming towns in the northwest who were pretty good. In case you need another case-in-point, look at Nebraska’s rise and fall. For the past few decades up to today, families are moving to urban settings in the south and are choosing to go to urban schools, mostly in the south. By moving to a southern conference we will be able to pull more recruits from the south (who are obviously much more talented than the leftovers we get) because OSU has decent facilities compared to the other schools.

Making one New Year’s bowl would tremendously help our program in terms of public perception, which is a huge problem for our program. We need good publicity, and continuing to get beat down year after year destroy’s a program’s reputation.

          • I’ve seen where smart people have stated that starting a sentence with ‘and’ is acceptable. Informal, but acceptable. Don’t know about ‘because’.

          • The grammar’s not the point. It is interesting that of all the aborted English I’ve written on this sports blog, you choose to point out something that is not poor grammar.

The different conference is a non-starter. It’s just a dumb idea. It’s about as clever as a Duck can be, though. Maybe they should do it.

  68. Angry: I don’t know if this changes anything for you, but I just learned this week that Taggert is from the Harbaugh coaching tree. He was jims rb coach at Stanford, and he’s the one who coached touchdown Toby.

Maybe he is a real coach as well as recruiter. Might end up being a great hire as option 8 for the quacks.

  69. The problem is the stupid hat. Men don’t wear hats like that. Women golfers wear hats like that. The former Mr. Man Boobs from UO wore hats like that. Is he afraid of messing up his hair? GA’s brain is getting cooked in the sun because he wears a hat like that. Nancy boys wear hats like that. How many linebackers do you see on the street wearing a hat like that? GA’s players see that hat and their testicles disappear. That is the problem. Change his name to Nancy Anderson.

  70. The d line was the crux of this game. They can’t get blown off the line like they were. Going to a 3-4 was a bad call. If you want to put 3 lineman down then at least two need to be able to command a double team (let alone split one). Unless this changes we don’t have another win on the schedule. Clune needs to realize the d line sucks and not rush only 3 on 3rd and long.

Defense overall comes down to desire, vision, and talent. We should have the last two in enough quantity to crush Portland state but without desire it doesn’t count. Intelligence is obviously missing in our secondary though, they kept blowing the zone coverage.

Second most critical part of the game was the o line. They just don’t have the talent. A bad talent group can pass block with decent coaching (see Indianapolis colts in the Peyton era). You can make low talent guys run block. Bad combo when we are built to run the football. This places a win cap at 4-5 games. This d line and dumb secondary put it at 0.5 games. They have already exceeded their win total.

    • The O line isn’t bad, we don’t have negative run plays or sacks. We just need better play calling. The drag routes to Togiai and Villamin are gold and we need to use them more. We throw deep too much. We have to get the ball to Tyner more than 2 times a game. We should have some 2-back formations and plays.

      • concur. There is absolutely NO flow with the play calling. And, there are actually few if any running plays for losses. The problem with the running game is a scheme (the read option) with a QB that has demonstrated he’s not a threat to run. Indeed, his own coaching staff has demonstrated this by bringing in Garretson in situations where the actual threat to run is more than usually important from a strategic standpoint, within the shadow of your own goal posts and in side the opponents 10 yard line

  71. Quick hitter about your next opponent.
FG kicker who was 22-24 last year and was the B1G kicker of the year misses two and goes 1-3.
QB throws a laser right to the CB on a fade to a 6’5″ TE in the end zone.
Game was not as close as it should have been. It was boring beyond belief.
Played two QB’s and was almost moved to tears by an actual spiral.

    • Buffalo is picked #128 in Div 1-A. Probably worse than PSU. If Minnesota’s offense is that bad it sets up a stoppable force vs movable object scenario.

  72. Crowd looked like Nicholls State. Game looked like a scrimmage. No intensity. We should have got a TD after PSU punter put his knee on the ground but there was no urgency, Nall wasn’t even in the game. I was impressed by the last drive, when we absolutely needed a TD we just went down and got one.

  73. Beav inside linebackers are out of place often. They don’t read and flow well. They get caught up with an O-lineman when they should have squatted and read the RB, then flowed to the ball. It’s like we have a half-ass guard-tackle gap blitz most plays and we get burned off tackle or right up the middle. Saw that Hungalu had 9 tackles but he should have had double that. The D’s problems arent all on the D-line, and they are correctable.

  74. I’m wondering if by playing CSU before Portland state wasn’t just a mistake because it was a gauranteed loss, but because it gave Portland state game film to see how bad the defense is. Is it possible they get better each game? Yes, but the team as a whole needs to carry over the last 3 minutes of the game and play like each play may lose them the game. You can’t play and think, if they score we still have time in this game. You will lose games with that mentality and not play hard all 4 quarters.

    • scheduling CSU when we did was athletic administrative malpractice of the highest order. Rather than allowing CSU to open their stadium vs.Abilene Christian, with no attendant national publicity, and AFTER CSU plays Alabama, we move up in order to give them an ideal promotional platform: game vs. “power” 5 opponent. To make matters worse, with all the leverage on our side, we don’t ask for a second game in Corvallis, OR appearance money. Heck, even UW got 500k for playing at Rutgers. And for what: an extra week of practice before the UW game, an opponent we will be a 40+ point underdog against?

  75. WSU finally won an opener as Leach began his 6th season, besting the MSU Bobcats. Fall had this to say about an injured player:

“Leach stuck to his normal policy of not addressing injuries, saying, “He’s 100 percent. Stronger than ever. The most remarkable thing about it is that a lot of times when a guy starts limping around, it crosses your mind that maybe he’s gotten weaker. But the most remarkable thing about it, he literally got stronger and has approximately the strength of 10 men, so we’re excited to unleash that next week.”

  76. I’m hard pressed to believe Tyner would even want a 6th year of eligibility with us. We give him no carries. Like wtf we gave DG 3 times as many carries yesterday as a former 5 star running back with experience in games we could only dream of playing in. Disgusting mismanagement of carries so far in my opinion. This coaching staff is a joke as of right now on offense. Defense not much better.

    • I thought the interesting thing about Tyner is that they positioned him yesterday in the slot, where Seth would normally be. That is, he took the place of the kid who fumbled on his first attempt at FOCO. I like the accountability and adaption of the coaching staff behind that decision. With an experienced runner in that position, either Seth or Tyner, I think that will open up the interior running game.

  77. It’s like the coaching staff has “their guys” and “their guys” will get the benefit of the doubt. See MM situation or Tyner situation.

  78. Saying their guys get the benefit of the doubt is generous. It’s as if they’ve made up their minds and that’s that. After Tim Cook’s stellar game last year, rarely played him. Pre-season, all the bs about using Tyner. I am waiting to see if they use Trevorriss Johnson next game. He looked good against PSU.

        • Kind of one of the things, where I started to take a dimmer view of GA or at least his control over his coordinators. A third-string back who rises to the challenge and rushes for 100 yards when needed is sure the hell going to get carries in his final game for the program. I brushed it off in the excitement of the CW win, but it bothered me. I think it did get a couple of mentions here previously.

    • Agree, Tyner is at OSU for the free education. I think k his heart is as much out of football as it was before. He doesn’t look fit, he is slow, and he runs scared. If he didn’t play again I would be fine with it. Speaking of RB, I wouldn’t mind if Calvin Tyler was done for the season. He is an unimpressive runner and his kick return decisions are awful.

      • after his return all the way to 10 (where he ran into the arms of a PSU defender) he was replaced by Pierce by back there. another good accountability step.

By the way, don’t be surprised if we see Nall become a two-way player before the year is out; like that kid at Stanford a few years back. As Jim Wilson noted in the post game after C-state, when Nall tackled the interceptor, “Nall is the best athlete on the field for OSU, either running the ball or tacking.”

      • Don’t think it’s just for the free education. He offered to take a walk on spot if he needed to. Also, he was still getting his education from UofO for free.

  79. Wasn’t Luke Falk on Coach Andersen kids HS Football team ? How did he miss on him ?
Under his nose and didn’t offer.
I think some changes should be coming this morning…

  80. Crappy FCS opponent, but McM went 6 -7, 103 yds with 25,45 yard TD passes in his Fresno St. debut. He did not start, but played the second half.

        • Yes i hate him so much, I hope his shoes fall off next time he runs for a first down and the whole stadium laughs at him.

My mistake, I looked at the game stats in the 3rd and MCM wasn’t even listed but their rb apparently threw a pass and I assumed.
But good for him throwing 2 TDs against powerhouse incarnate word. Who I hear might win their league against the likes of University of Phoenix, ITT Tech and last year’s champ DeVry online University.

      • That is not correct, the other pass was thrown by a RB on a trick play. It appears that McM did beat out the JC transfer, Jorge Reyna to be the back up for now. The local paper made it a point to criticize Chason Virgil’s accuracy (and note it was an issue last season) despite the blow out win and also mentioned an impressive pass from McM that led to a TD in addition to the other TD passes he threw.

Look, love or hate McM, he isn’t a scrub. It was a solidly rated dual-threat QB going into college. I believe Riley heard all of the criticism about his stiff as a board QB’s and at least recruited McM to appease the critics. Whether or not Riley was ever gong to play McM is another issue.

  81. Beavs were fortunate to win (but then, how many times has OSU been unlucky to lose?) but even if PSU had won it might not have been the leading upset. Howard beat UNLV yesterday

    • 45 point dogs to unlv and won. Biggest upset in college football history. $100 bet to win out right would have paid $55000. I wonder if anyone took that bet.

  82. Looks like a lot of our run D problems would go away if we didn’t run so much nickel. The few times we had another LB on the field we stuffed them.
