  1. We need to see a dominant run game, no dropped passes, some sacks, some forced turnovers and a good game from Nolan. We know what we have in Fenwick lets see some more Martinez and Jam. Need to take a large early lead to get the back ups and young guys some valuable playing time.

    Beavs win 42-17!

  2. Nice drive for the beavs. Pac network still sux but actually enjoying the intimacy of the smaller venue. If this gets more people juiced for the beavs calling it a win

    • Will be interesting to see what adjustments Bray makes.

But yeah can’t figure their qbs can tote the rock every play and remain intact

  3. Least surprising thing ever, kickoff coverage has been shaky all season. It’s embarrassing we can’t find someone to kick it out of the endzone every single time.

  4. So we are now entering the stage if the game where we are playing to our strength. Since we are up so big now they are now having to throw the ball more which is showing they are not competent in.

  5. First punt return touchdown since 2015.

That was Sappington on the missed PAT. Apparently we are just not reliable from any distance in any situation right now. Concerning for the next two weeks.

  6. Odd question about a blow out win, but do you feel better about this team after this game? Between kicking and Mobile QB issues I’m not sure I do

      I feel better about:
      Defense ability to adjust
      Wrs CAN actually catch
      Depth

      Concerns:
      Special teams coverage
      Kicking (pat, fg, kickoffs)
Running qb that can pass will kill this team

    • Here’s what I called first four games:

      Boise St – W
      @Fresno St – W
      Montana St – W
USC – L (not in coaching disarray this season, loaded with talented free agents who’ve had 3 games to warm up, and a coach who can apparently lead. Beavs lose a close one. Damn.)

  7. I saw that we were without Chatfield and Golden today. That’s a big deal. I wonder if they were banged up and coaches decided to rest them for next week.

  8. Lincoln Riley and Smith must be step brothers. Not far into second quarter and Riley has gone for it 4th down at least 3 times already this game.

  9. USC is too good. Beavs would have to win 61-58 or something which is pretty unlikely. Goal should be to play solid, keep it within 14 and not get anyone hurt. Utah will be the crossroads game.

    • The offense is Pete Carrol era good. Only way to beat them is to play perfect on offense, control the clock with the run, and hope their offense makes a key mistake like a pick 6. Not completely impossible but we’re talking like a 10% probability.

      • Their offense is good. But I think we have a better defense than Fresno. I think Beav fans are freaking out a bit much. USC will be on the road and Jonathan Smith coached teams play much better (especially defensively) at Home. Also, OUR offense is good. Todays game puts us at 45 points a game average. It will be a tough game but if our defense can be opportunistic. And our offense can continue to score at a high rate, we should have more than a decent shot.

They have a shot, but its a long shot. On another note, it looks like the Pac-12 is pretty dang good this year. USC, Utah, UW, WSU, and Oregon are all really tough games. I would consider 9-3 a great season.

  10. SC finally punts, after a 14yd sack, leaving them with 4th and 33. Fresno starts at their 5. Here is where a long drive, using clock to get to the half with more points will be key.

Well, 3 and out……….best laid plans.

  11. I’m not sure what the Beavs can do to stop USC’s offense except play zone and keep everything in front. Addison may have to be double teamed.

Something I’ve noticed w/ Lincoln Riley’s teams at Oklahoma is that they stagnate mid third quarter. Beavs just have to be patient and opportunistic

Is there a way to play QB strategically that avoids injuries like that? I feel like efforts to extend a play like Haener made there are just asking for trouble in the long run. Just drop and protect yourself. Brady was able to play his whole career with only one catastrophic injury, there must be something about throwing it away strategically and avoiding big hits. Its a skill that should be emphasized more.

  13. Bray has to call the game of his life next week and the DBs have to have short memories and get some TO’s…Bray may look like the weak link.

Is Julian healthy enough to be a factor?

It’s all on the offense to keep pace and control clock. The D just has to play bend don’t break and not give up the huge play. If they force a TO that’s gravy. It will take a perfect performance by the offense.

  14. We will need to limit penalties and win TOP. If our defense gets gassed against SC it will be a long day. I’m confident that the offense can produce but our running game still feels like it consists of Fenwick falling forward for 3 yards at a time and Martinez coming in for a nice burst and then is benched.

Anyone else feel like Martinez needs to start over Fenwick? He just looks better. I feel like we aren’t playing upperclassmen just to play them like Riley used to. Should be put the best 11 on the field regardless of class.

Chance looked solid but we still haven’t seen him against a conference opponent which worries me. Hope Musgrave is healthy and the WR’s continue to catch the ball.

I can see us winning if we force a turnover or two and our run game gets going to setup the PA to the TE’s. This game will show us what the Beavs are truly made of a give us a good bar for the rest of the season.

My preseason prediction for SC was a 38-24 loss but I would love to be wrong. Really wish we had Reser at full capacity for this one. Loudest game at Reser I’ve been to was in ‘08 when they were #1 and we beat ‘em. Week 1 against Boise State was still super loud despite the 27k limit, not sure if it translated to TV but I was surprised.

Solid win today and going to Rice Eccles 4-0 would be something special. Nice to finally be able to have a relaxing game where we crush an inferior opponent. Paying for a ticket and driving to the game and sitting in traffic on the way home after losing to Sac State is something I never want to experience ever again lmao.

USC hasn’t been in pressure situations yet, nor have they been punched in the mouth by any team yet.

They are going to be similar to Carrolls teams but more like a travel all star team. I think Williams is good to great but does get careless/greedy at times. In pressure situations he will call his own number and run . Plan for it.

All of the offensive stars will get frustrated in a tight game when they can’t be flashy and prance around.

They have had 3-4 pick 6 and I expect the Beavs offense doesn’t make the same bad turnovers.

USC is attempting to create an image of overwhelming talent and track meet offense as a form of program/conference propaganda when they may be an average defense with above average offense.

    My concern would be:
USC gets benefit of the doubt on ref judgment calls because they are perceived as the flagship again.

League office desires an undefeated USC go to the playoffs.

Beavs get caught up in the smoke and mirrors imagery of the Mighty Trojans 2.0

USC has added 40 4/5 star free agents and will simply be more talented but I don’t believe that means they can’t be beaten.

I want to see how USC deals with adversity rather than being front runners.

    • Agree on the free agents/not a proven team point. Nobody knows what they will do if they face adversity. This Fresno game has been instructive, as they are basically on the same level as the Beavs. They actually played well at times, moved the ball, made some big plays. But this just shows that ANY MISTAKE that kills a drive is absolute death for your chances. Again, they’ve played pretty well, but are being toyed with like a golden retriever with a chew toy. Playing at home will be a big difference, I expect the crowd to be amped and to be a factor. Vegas will set this line at 14 though and for good reason.

    • “I want to see how USC deals with adversity rather than being front runners.”

This requires the opposing team to be adverse towards them; if the score consistently stays close, that will apply the kind of pressure that can result in opportunities.

Having the game in PDX was a nice treat. Had great seats and they were pretty cheap. Atmosphere was good, lots of crowd nouse. DJ music playing non-stop was a bit much, but a minor complaint.
Would be nice if they could play PSU as a “road” game every other year while having the 2 other non-con games at home, but that’s wishful thinking. Could be beneficial to both programs though if they can work out a good revenue sharing agreement.

The last time I was in Portland for a Beaver game was when Joe Capp was the coach of Cal and I believe we happened to win that one, too. I had considered going to Portland for this game, but only for a minute, as Ted Wheeler’s outstanding leadership as Mayor has made downtown Portland a place to avoid; at all costs – right up there with Seattle. I hope everyone that ventured in to Portlandia made it out safely after the game last night.

      • The people of Oregon decriminalizing all hard drugs has been a disaster. Who could have seen that one coming???

That being said, last night went pretty smoothly from our perspective. Nothing scary. Beaver and Bobcat fans around us seemed to be having a great time too

          • We drove up from Bend – stayed two nights right downtown–no sketchiness around us either night. Maybe we were lucky? We never go to home games-can’t find a hotel and we like to party.

  17. Morning after PFF. Relative rankings mean a little
more now that everyone has played their cupcake games.

Nolan is the now the top P5 passer in the country, #2 overall and #4 QB (Gopher QB is a better runner, apparently).

Martinez top rated Beav RB by a wide margin now.

OL ratings continue to go down (except Fuaga).

Mascarenas now the top rated Beav LB (though competition surely has something to do with that).

  18. ESPN’s FPI is so worthless. Arizona State moved up after losing to #120 Eastern Michigan, who moved down after the win. Notre Dame is #25 while sitting at 1-2.

  19. The score in this win doesn’t reflect the need for all three phases to be executing consistently. It wasn’t quite there yet.

I think this team will need this to happen for the difficult parts of the schedule.

I liked that the WRs + TEs made several clutch receptions.

    Too many 3rd & long?

Defense produced turnovers; when they weren’t disciplined, it was rough.

Special teams can not allow other team to take to ball to house.

Nice to feature Gulbranson in a series — clearly more a pocket passer. Unlike Chance, demonstrated awareness to slide.
