  1. Beavs need to hit first and take it to Utah. If they win the toss, defer the kickoff to the second half and put the D out there first. Obvious I know, but I hope they get a chance to do that The S seem to have responded well to the loss against USC, at least based on interview video.

Nolan didn’t sound like he responded as well. Also, did he ever interview this week? Anybody seen any reaction from him? It strikes he interviews rarely outside of camp. This must be deliberate.

The start time is odd, particularly for this team. Smith said it aligns with their normal practice schedule, so he’s not worried about it. Beavers improved depth should help at altitude.

I expect higher use of Colletto today, and wouldn’t mind the “go for 2” with him in there if needed. Its the bad 4th calls that I still worry about, though that seems better this year.

Young Beaver TEs have to watch the false starts today. They should expect a loud crowd.

Hoping Bolden and Gould get a higher volume of reps, some Dunmore too.

I don’t see Nolan rebounding well, and expect Utah to win comfortably, by 14-17.

  2. There are zero upset alerts in this game.

Do the Beavs need a miracle to win this game? No, but a lot of things need to go their way. Unlikely they beat Utah straight up.

I wonder with the early start time, will the crowd be a little less energized?

  3. In the pre-season forecast I had this as a loss. The only reason to reconsider is that neither SC nor UW are as good as we thought, so might the same apply to Utah?

By the way, I see Lance Leipold has Kansas playing good football for the first time in over a decade. Who was it, on this board, that during the late Riley era kept touting him as a prospect for Corvallis?

    • I was a supporter of having Leipold in the applicant pool. I think competition for jobs is a good thing, and not just hand it to anyone. Which is not really how NCAA Football hires go at universities…

  4. Lots of hype for Leipold last week on some cfb shows. They all expect him to land one of the cherry blueblood jobs after this season.

As for the Beavs/Utes, I stick with an optimistic outlook: Beavs bounce back, D continues to shine and outperforms the overhyped Utah D, Nolan has a nice game, Griffin shows out and Beavs have no major mistakes for a workmanlike efficient road win.

    Beavs 38-Utes 24

  5. Utes are overrated. I don’t see a lot of actual analysis for the people making these picks on the game so I don’t put much stock in any of it. To me it’s a toss up, but we don’t have a good record in those.

    Utah 24-OSU 20

    • Just heard BIG JIM mention the return of Brewer and it’s possible impact on the running game. As mentioned last week, I think this could help, not only the run game, but the way plays are called which can help Chance settle down. Here’s hoping.

UPDATE: Carter Bahns reports: Oregon State OL Marco Brewer is in uniform and warming up, albeit with the twos. Looking like Heneli Bloomfield will get another start at left guard.

  6. WBB:
Eggers up with a piece on Rueck, Scott comes across as very, very, honest. Discussion of the new squad and much on the impact of transfer portal on coaching.

Didja know Destiny Slocum, who left for Arkansas for her final year of eligibility worked the Beav’s camps this past summer?
Rueck says, “I don’t burn bridges,”… “When someone decides to go, it’s fine. My attitude is, ‘Thanks for your contributions to our program and I’ll be a fan watching you in the future.’ I wish them the best. I’m not going to let a transfer impact my relationship with anyone.”

    https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/scott-rueck-on-his-2022-23-beavers-well-have-a-chance-to-win-every-night

  7. Hayes did not make the trip. I imagine any and all 4th downs inside the 40 we’ll be going for it. Sorta helps to have that mindset going in though, can help the playcallers know they have 4 downs to work with.

  8. Just watched most of last years win against the utes. We had 3 things go right last year: Baylor, Bradford, special teams. Fenwick looked the same last year as he does this year, going down on first contact. Unless they give Jam the ball this year we don’t have the running game this year we had last year as Lowe was also a factor last year.
We will need to keep a spy on Rising as he killed us with his legs last year.
And of course penalties need to be limited. Is it bad and last year’s game and so far this season I haven’t seen any improvements in that area. I think the beams can do it, but it’s definitely going to take some of these factors being done, right

  9. Oklahoma is getting curbstomped by unranked an undefeated TCU. Refs already attempted with 4 consecutive plays to keep Oklahoma in the game, but TCU has overcome those calls as well. QUite entertaining to see Vegas losing their shorts and unable to affect it with crooked refs.

    FFS….time to pull Nolan already?
Bad body language to start the game and then a pick on his 2nd throw. It’s who he is now

    • I’m all for someone else at this point. Nolan is who he is and that isnt going to change. Great against sub par competition. Folds like a cheap tent against good defenses.

      • Thanks whiskey! It was a long wait to say the least! Loved how they did it too on a walk off home run.

In other news Nolan sucks ass! Bench this dude, it’s unbelievable.

        • Well my opinion is obviously shit….

If I were the Mariners? I would tank these last 5 games and get the 6 seed to face Cleveland in the wild card. They won 6 of 7 against them in the regular season and swept them in Cleveland a few weeks ago.

Would also stay out of the Trashstros side of the bracket. I’d rather take my chances against NYY than Houston.

          • Haha! No, you know your stuff. I just follow them closer than most. They hadn’t shown much for 20 years, so you weren’t the only one doubting them ?

And I 100% agree with you on your take. That’s exactly what they need to do. If you look at the starting lineup, the team understands that too.

  11. On that 2nd Nolan run, refs completely missed the leg whip tackle that took Nolan down. Should have added penalty yards.
Oh well, didnt need it. But it was right there in plain sight

  12. Read option, sweeps, and screens were all missing in the USC game to keep the d off guard. Like the look on that drive. Just keeps the defense thinking in the back of their mind that Nolan may run it or a wide receiver may take the hand off

  13. Nolan is trash. Can only run so long before we get 9 guys in the box. 7 td and 7 picks on the year is awful. If you’re still defending a qb with those ratios then winning is not a concern .how bad do our backups have to be to stick with those turnover #’s? Lol

  14. I am all in on trying someone else at qb. But some throws that Nolan makes are great including that deep out on that drive. Problem is
    he is so inconsistent.

  15. Chance kept the ball and it should happen more on those option plays! Chance only throwing a few times on that drive will build his confidence to remind him, he can tuck and run.

  16. A couple nice decisions by Nolan on that drive to run it instead of forcing a pass.

Although one of them might have been a designed QB draw.

THAT is what he should be doing. His strength isn’t being a pocket passer

  17. 4
    1

People still think I was wrong to call for Gulbranson or Gebbia?

If Smith puts him back out there Smith should immediately go on the hot seat. Lol

    • Strategery. Get Utah DBs excited about the chance to catch easy picks and then it opens up running lanes for the rest of the game.

  18. FFS. Chance Nolan giveth and taketh away.

What did I say his strength is???

Terrible fucking pass that could be seen all the way from Oregon.

Is it Lindgren calling this shit?

  19. 1st drive – 2 awful passes. 2nd one picked.
    2nd drive – 6 runs on 7 plays = TD
3rd drive – 2 awful passes. 2nd one pick six.

    Hmmmm. I wonder……

  20. The only reason I think Nolan is in the game is due to the installed game plan. They must have some designed plays for Nolan to run.

If Gebbia or Gulbranson come in, it narrows options.

But they need to take him out, it’s clear his confidence is gone.

  21. You could tell on that last passing play Nolan no longer has confidence in himself. The old Nolan would have forced something there. This time he hesitated and made that awkward looking throwaway.

  22. I’m sold on benching Nolan now lol. The errors are even more brutal and now he has such happy feet he can’t complete anything.

  23. If you have a choice:
Gunslinger confidently chucking all over the field
Hesitant deer in the headlights game manager
Novice with no experience and possible high ceiling, but no fear

Nolan once was the first, now the second and Gulbranson may be the third

  24. Well my opinion is obviously shit….

    • Idk why this posted down here. Supposed to be a response to tango whiskey towards the top of the thread.

      Sorry. Carry on

  25. Chance’s big issue is he has below average anticipation and so-so mechanics. DBs now just sitting on short routes and with smaller windows to throw to and an inability to threaten defense deep, it is easy pickings for secondaries. He is holding the entire team back. Gotta make a move now to just not completely demoralize the entire team.

Another issue is Martinez looks awful. He cannot see holes and just runs into his blockers. Really poor vision. Gen wick is much better but still isn’t good. Griffin should get the rock 15-20 times minimum a game

  26. The Beavs should really never go for a prototype/Brady style/statue QB again. There aren’t many great ones anymore and the highest rated would never consider this program. So many athletic dual threat guys to choose from.

  27. So far. Gifted Utah 14 points with turnovers.
The defense has done fine as long as there hasn’t been a short field.

This is all on the coaches.

  28. Nolan so scared of under throwing the ball he’s way overcompensating. That’s not an easy mental fix and smith needs to understand that’s how it’s going to be all game if he doesn’t pull him

  29. 1
    1

Next will be whether the D just decides to mail it in since the coaches are unwilling to pull Nolan.

Ron M just said medical staff looking at Nolan’s neck on the sideline. Perhaps a show towards a face saving pull from the game while there is still a chance. I expect Ben in next possessions

  30. easy to say here and now, but when Nolan came off the field I said to my wife: “he looks hurt”. you could tell from the way he was carrying himself. So now, for the first time since I can remember, the Beavs get to bring in a player that hasn’t seen the field much to work some magic.

  31. 2/7, 26 yards, 2 picks (one return for TD).

In the first quarter Nolan completed as many passes to Utah as he did to his own receivers.

6 picks no TD’s in the last 5 quarters.

His ass SHOULD be parked on the bench NOW.
Single handedly (along with Lidgren) killing this team.

  32. In this situation wonder why not gebbia. He has game experience and knows the offense really well. Don’t trust this staff to choose the right guy.

  33. I know the camp reports was that Gulbranson turned it over too much. At this point can’t be worse than Nolan. Gebbia can’t stretch the field and they’re squatting on the short routes right now.

    • Prefer to not have to do this vs the #12 team on the road but no choice even if Chance isn’t hurt. His last 5 quarters have been startling bad.

    • I am baffled by how much the coaching staff seems to love Fenwick. Team needs a TD and Griffin on the bench and Fenwick in. Having your best and most explosive back on the bench there makes no sense. Lindgren is his own worst enemy

  34. 21-10. Really need the D to stop them this drive.

As someone stated above they’ve been put in a bad spot most of the game so far

  35. Fenwick goes down if a defender puts a hand on him. Need to have Griffin as our every down back. He fights for yards. Fenwick is good for falling forward.

Gulbranson has composure in the pocket and looks the part.

  36. Hey, drives for a fg. First real game snaps for BG for the most part. Good team. Road game. That’s not too shabby! Looks confident out there at least.

  37. They need to give Gulbranson some easy throws to get him in rhythm. He looks good directing the offense. But in a hostile environment you can deflate the crowd by chipping away with short pass plays. We are running the ball well enough to win this game. Need our defense to make some big plays though.

  38. Whiting ham wants it to be a closer game apparently. Overcoaching

God stop by defense. Maybe open up the playbook and see what BG has in his arm. More Jam please
    More Silas please

  39. Skyler Thomas has been making some plays in his limited time on field. Pick or 2 last season, great instincts on the bad snap to crash hard and make a tackle.

    • Parker and Wilson on the radio saying the Beavs dont have confidence they can punch it in with a handoff and will likely go on the edges.
Cant punch it in with 1st and goal from the 5? 4 straight Colletro runs should get it done

  40. You have 1st and goal from the 5 and have had quite a bit of success running the ball. Why in the blue fuck do you pass on first down??

  41. Dumb play on first down. Run clock and/or make them use their timeouts.

Get the Milf hammer on the field here! At the very least as a decoy.

  42. Pass should have been higher, that was a TD … and have to take a time out.

At least they’re moving the ball.

TD on this drive and we’re back in business

  43. Lindgren continues to get in his own way. That was a horrific third down call. “We might score a TD, time to give our 2 least productive backs the ball”. Awful, awful coaching

  44. Lindgren has made good calls all season until now. Seems like he’s lost his confidence along with Chance and he’s just trying to catch Utah off guard with WTF calls.

  45. This kicker looks okay…fairly accurate at least, doesn’t appear to have the strongest leg. I’ll take him over Hayes at this point.

    • Well they were 2 26 yard field goals so IDK how you can take .uch from that. His kickoffs were going out of the back of the end zone too.

  46. 21-13 now. Need 37 good seconds from the D.

If they can go into halftime within one score that will be a fucking miracle considering how bad Nolan and Lidgren have bent them over these first 30 minutes.

  47. Limdgren doesn’t trust Colletto on 4 plays from the 5?

Beavs have been intimidated by the reputation of Utah line for a decade and I’m sick of it. They have just fun it in them for the whole half and at the 5 you go yellow…!
Cmon JS, have some guts and at least go with your best options. Good grief

  48. Beavs had 2 plays to work with to set up a possible Hail Mary before halftime and just chose to take a knee. Hate when coaches do this cause the chances of throwing a pick 6 in this scenario is minimal and you may get lucky. Just not even trying at all just screams that you’re afraid

    • Didn’t want to ruin Gulbranson’s confidence with an Interception. At this point, we’re finally playing for the future and not a “magical season”.

  49. Beavs have 220 yds and held Utah to 139. Nolan cost us 14 pts. We are still in this. Need Griffin to carry the ball 15 times in 2nd half.

  50. Only down 8.

D hasn’t not been bad so far. Need to get a stop to start the 2nd half.

Nolan is out. Lindgren needs to stop stepping on his dick.

  51. 2
    1

I think we know why Gulbranson isn’t the starting QB even with Nolan’s struggles. 1/5 with two ball nearly picked off and missing one wide open touchdown throw. Looks like he audibled into some not so great runs.

Kind of why I thought Gebbia would be the best choice to come in. He knows the offense and has the reputation of checking into the right plays. Arm is limited so play action over the top would not get any respect.

I do suspect if Gulbranson struggles a bit more, Gebbia gets the call. The running game is doing really well, just have to mix up the play calls and misdirection to keep Utah from selling out.

The defense won’t be able to hold Utah off the entire second half. So the Beavs need to score about 3-4 TDs in the second half to win. And need a turnover or special teams TD to win.

  52. Beavs Offense 13
Utah Offense 7 (+14 from Nolan)

Beavs D can win us this game if the Beav QB doesn’t hand the utes the ball on half the possessions.

  53. How do you not use the Colletto package in that situation?
Back up freshman qb and a chance to deflate Utah with TD, but Colletto doesn’t even get a chance. It’s been established that the line blocks more aggressively and confidently when Colletto is behind them.
Lindgren play calling is in question and he should be on the hot seat for such malfeasance.

    I hope it doesn’t end in a 4 pt loss…

  54. halfway takeaways:

    – did colletto get demoted? several colletto situations yet no snaps

    – Gulbransens arm looks good. Should’ve given him some quick completions. Clear why they waited as his legs don’t allow him to roll out of the pocket like Nolan did on play action and was a big part of the offense.

    – we have a near 100% run rate in the pistol this year. Utah clearly knows this and stacks the box every time. Switch it up

    – D looks good so far just need to contain Rising on the scrambles and not let receivers get over the top

    – still need some more jam

    – really bad playcalling

If the team gets some confidence and the coaches call a good second half they have a shot at winning this. We are on the same lvl as them minus qb play. Gulbransen needs to keep his cool and play smart

  55. I am not a coach. But Utah did not look fantastic against the run. If you have first and goal from the five after a big play you always should run the ball and get on the ball quickly. The defense is usually gassed from chasing at that point and it’s the best opportunity to put them on their heels while setting up your next two downs. I hate drop back passes inside the 5. You should always be threatening run with play action.

    • That’s the big opportunity in the second half. Beavs won TOP and ran well. If the Beavs can gash Utah on the ground again, Utah’s defense will be gassed early in the 4th quarter.

  56. Beavs D been on the field just over 13 minutes, should be good for the second half if the O can burn just a little clock enroute to points.

  57. HALTIME

    Utah 21 | Oregon State 13

    Total: Utah 139 | OSU 219
    Rushing: Utah 57 | OSU 130
    Passing: Utah 82 | OSU 89

It’s tough to be a very good team when you are you’re own worst enemy. Unacceptable in game 5 of a 12 game season. Extremely frustrating to watch.

  58. Sappington been a pleasant surprise today. Grabbed they’ve all been short FG’s.

Offense needs to start putting it in the end zone. Asking the D to continue to pitch a shut out is unrealistic.

  59. Jam Griffin has barely touched the ball since the first quarter. Jonathan Smith and Brian Lindgren just ignoring what is obvious to anyone else with eyes

    • Lindgren tends to call more passing plays when a new QB comes into the game to get him in rhythm. Run game needs to be a staple while we still have time.

  60. 1
    1

Rising is picking Austin apart. Stiff armed him earlier. Completed multiple passes on him, including this last td. Seems like a good guy, avg footballer

      • If Lindgren were let go, who would replace him? One idea is Paul Chryst, who just got canned at Wisconsin. He was our OC for a few years and during that time he had a year where OSU had a 4,000 yard passer, a 1500 yard rusher and two 1,000 yard receivers. Those are pretty lofty numbers and very few teams can claim that distinction.

    • I didn’t. and got blasted for it.

Let’s be real………….With these players and coaches a special season isn’t going to happen. 7-5 is the ceiling unfortunately. Embrace it and future MWC membership.

And honestly? Sadly it’s where beaver football belongs.

  61. JT Daniels is probably regretting his decision and we would be 5-0 with him. Play calling it a little annoying but all of these INTs have nothing to do with the playcall

  62. 2
    1

2 very winnable games against top 15 teams and the coaches have failed the team, Nolan has the tips and no Settled running back. Incredible disappointment when it was all right there

  63. I’m no expert, but it feels like Utah’s offense is dynamic with three or four things going on every play. Ours feels like all 11 guys are devoted to a single option and hopefully it works.

  64. 1
    1

Martinez has been disappointing given the preseason hype surrounding him. There has to be something going on. But I haven’t seen a single run of his that has made me say wow.

    • Today he’s been swallowed at the line because our OL is mostly losing the battle. In previous games he’s shown good ability to bounce off tackles, but he doesn’t hit the hole as confidently as Griffin has.

  65. It’s like we develop a complete opposite game plan and play against our own strengths. It’s a really dumb strategy. Case and point shown here.

    • 4
      1

We got scared and abandoned the run because Lindgren was worried we wouldn’t be able to keep them off balance with the passing game. Winning with the run requires patience and Lindgren got scared and desperate after the first few drives.

  66. 1
    1

I paid for Sling TV to watch this $&!&?! Our coaches may be good at building Kumbaya but not that great at coaching. I give Bray a pass. You can only carry the team so far.

  67. 2
    13

Maybe an overreaction, but this feels like the beginning of the end of the JS era.

The current program with its current makeup doesn’t seem like it will be capable of breaking through. Maybe his saving grace will be moving to the MWC with a lower level of competition.

  68. 2
    2

Out coached. Smith with the wrong personal and Lindgren for very poor play calling. And i’m not sure we have a qb that can play at this level.

  69. 3
    1

At this point 7 wins seems like the high water mark. Games against Stanford, Colorado, Cal and ASU are absolute must wins. Without a QB, Beavs will be pretty significant underdogs against the rest.

  70. Well, we all knew the season was set for a tough first half of the schedule. JS needs to keep the spirits up for the next games, still looking for 7+ wins.
Use this last quarter in SLC to build something on O.

  71. 5
    12

I think we just played what will be the best team in the PAC-12 at the end of the season. All you ragging the coaches and players need to slow your roll. This team can still win the rest of the games on the schedule. We were just unfortunate to play a front loaded schedule. Turnovers have been the primary reason for our last two losses. You cannot blame that on the coaches. Play calling will be up and down for any team. But the players need to be smart with the ball. Also our defense hasn’t been generating any turnovers. That’s a problem. And it’s on the players. Not the coaches.

    • 12
      1

I still contend that last year’s losses and this years losses are more on the coaches than the players. Calling wrong plays with wrong personnel is on the coaches.

    • I get what your saying. But you cant ignore the constant desire to throw the ball in the RZ. Just before the interception on the fade Martinez had just ripped off a 10 yard gain. At that point the beavs had already ran for 150+ against a solid front 7. Pound the damn ball.

  72. Having USC and at Utah to start the conference season doesn’t help. I don’t think any other team in the league has a tougher schedule to start PAC 12 play. Except maybe Stanford(USC, at Washington, at Oregon).

  73. On the post game show Jim Wilson effectively said what’s been the main theme here today. The other pieces on this team are in place. What to do at QB is a “conundrum.”

    • 9
      1

Might as well try Gebbia. He’s probably the QB on the roster most suited to be a manager. Batted balls are better than INTs.

      • 1
        1

Gebbia has a victory over the Quacks, that should get him a start. I mean, he apparently did something to win the job at one point. He might still be the QB if not for the bullshit move by McKinley.

    • I’d argue receiver is an issue though. Sometimes they can’t get separation and other times you can’t count on them. Disappointed how inconsistent Harrison still is.

  74. 13
    1

4-0 turnovers in consecutive games will have you 0-2 almost all the time no matter who you are playing. I’m seeing a lot of Lindgren blame, but at the end of the day he’s not throwing the pass. The only INT these last two games I would say was directly on the play call was that last one Gulbranson threw, but it was the most inconsequential of the 8.

I think it’s easy to blame the play calling but Utah was stacking the box like crazy inside the 10. Sometimes that’s on the players too. Not seeing the running lanes, making the wrong cut. I think it was just frustrating that we broke out lots of gadget plays in between the 20’s but couldn’t find a way to do that in the red zone.

I guess the question is, why can’t a former QB head coach find a QB for his team? The big picture questions for this program are a little frightening. Feels like this season is a lost cause. So how does Smith keep the team engaged? And what happens next season? Some key guys are leaving. Will Bray get poached? I’m not saying the Smith era is in danger of collapsing, but the big program changing win still eludes him. And he’s had plenty of chances.

    • All good points. In a year where the defensive line has been more than adequate, lbs and coverage are excellent, we now have oline problems compoounded by quarterback issues and turnover catastrophe.
Remember when Beavs had only 5 turnovers for the entire season during Luton’s final year? JS was coaching then as well. What is being missed now?

Nolan is killing this team, BG turnovers were lethal as well but Nolan should be in a much better place to avoid horrible ints. I figured BG would be good for 1 int in the 2nd half, but 2 in the endzone is also inexscusable. No way you give Lindgren a pass for those ints either. He is calling the pass plays in the first place. Run plays with variety in the goal line series is better than 2-3 ints in the endzone. Which is why the Beavs need a dual threat qb or use the COlletto package like you have been using it all season for goodness sake.
BTW Colletto failing later in the game doesn’t compare to not using him once in the red-zone the whole game. Unforgivable negligence at this point.

  75. 6
    3

Part of me wonders if Lindgren is distracted by job openings elsewhere and isnt fully focused on his current job. He started the season with OSU’s offense looking like one of the better units in the Pac. And he’s talked in the last year about having an eye out for the right job whem it presents itself. Wonder if ASU is looking at him? Today didnt help his cause

    • Like when he calls a qb read with a pitch using a qb that isn’t mobile? He’s so up and down. I wonder how much smith gets involved with play calling.

  76. Terrible play calls and QB play and here we are turning both of our back-to-back season defining games into losses. I said to myself we needed one of the two against USC or Utah to be good. 8 interceptions in two games… I am kind of over Beavers this year.

  77. 10
    1

8 interceptions… two losses to the season defining games (needed at least on of the two). I am kind of over watching the Beavs this year. I think I’ll go fair-weather until they prove me otherwise. Bad playcalling and bad QB.

  78. 14

I guess the good thing of being on the Pac12 network every week is that most of the country doesn’t watch you get destroyed. by your own failings. Let teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Florida St, Washington, Oregon have those spotlight games.

I’m not sure if the Beavs will ever dig out of the losing pit. It shows how amazing Dennis Erickson Fiesta Bowl team was an outlier. Riley never had such a season and was within reach. DE did the impossible from my viewpoint, because I don’t think it will ever happen again in Corvallis.

  79. Trying to distract myself from today’s gut punch. Went back to check a few of our pre-season prognostications:

    Whiskey: 1-4 through 5, 7 wins overall
    Angry: 5-0 through 5, 9 wins overall
    Wannabeav: 2-3 through 5, 7 wins overall
    oob: 2-3 through 5, 8 wins overall

Still, for this group and most of the degenerates here, it’s not so much the number of losses to date, but HOW the losses played out.
Seems once again the curse of the Beavs is: What Might Have Been

    • Never even knew it was a possibility at the D-1 college level. A running clock is used with high school football in Oregon when a team is up by 35 points. It makes for some quick second halves.

  80. Someone smart explain to me why we don’t use TE to leak out on play actions. We use them a lot to block. Figured we’d see a overman get a few targets each game. Maybe he’s terrible at catching the ball so the bring in Veiling. I haven’t see any evidence of that though.

Next game I want to see the most boring drive on the first possession with throws to get gulbranson into a rhythm.

  81. Geez, not even the Fresno victory is looking that impressive any longer. Bulldogs lost to Mora and UConn 19-14 today (22.5 pt underdogs). Haefner did not play.

    • And now ASU is going up and down the field on USC’s defense in the first half. JS and BL should be getting well deserved heat for the last 2 weeks. Horrific play calling and an inability to bring in better talent at the QB position is dragging the rest of the team down.

        2

I’m ready for Lindgren to go get his dream job so JS can bring in a guy who will commit to timing the ball and actually recruit a great dual threat qb.
If ASU in disarray can compete and run on USC, Beavs should be able to, all it takes is some decisive ply calling which we haven’t seen.
BL and Nolan great against mediocre and scared against decent talented teams.

  82. Smith’s comments postgame: https://youtu.be/rdW6KmVNnmY

You wouldn’t notice if you hadn’t watched a lot of Smith’s pressers over the years, but this is about as visibly frustrated as I have ever seen him.

I think he knows even better than us as fans how close this team is to having a special year but the position he knows best can’t even get close to getting it done.

  83. I’m not sure I’ve ever watched a Beav game with five trips to the red zone with a grand total of nine points. Believe it or not, we’ve been a little spoiled at times with how few turnovers the Beavs have had over the years. It probably led to a couple more wins than the team’s talent projected. Now, we are seeing the frustrating opposite. It’s not fun.

Our D line looked bad against their OL today. Rising had all day to throw and no spy on him for read plays or when he was outside the pocket. Using a spy takes away a defender from playing pass which sucks but it would have been nice to mix it in.

Biggest issue I have with this team aside from the obvious QB issue and interceptions is the god awful 3rd down playcalling. Utah consistently stacked the box and at that point it’s simple math. If they have more guys in the box than we have to account for and we run it towards the mass of bodies we will not go anywhere. Our WR’s are fast, a quick slant pattern should get enough separation to fire it in there in stride cuz you know with the amount of heat they are bringing it will be man 1 on 1.

The other thing is why in the fuck do we gamble on 4th down under JS but not in the red zone in a game where we need TD’s. Nice to see our 19th century time traveler Atticus Sappington come in and put in work but did we not see how fast they can score? Worst case we don’t convert on 4th and they have to drive 95+ yards and at that point we deserve to lose if they do that every time. Red zone playcalling is notoriously difficult throughout all levels of football but we need to get more creative in that regard. I would not be mad if Lindgren bounced for somewhere else, as long as we can keep Bray pending how the rest of the season goes.

Gulbranson looks about as good as you could expect him to look without much game experience. Chance is getting exposed against conference level defenders, tough to say if we should start Chance or Ben which sucks because the team needs to be behind one guy and not have that distraction.

Chance is not going through his progressions every play and was staring down his receivers which is ez pickens for a defense because the QB’s eyes tell them where he’s gonna go.

I had us losing to USC, Utah, and UW in my preseason predictions. I’d be happy if it goes that way and we only lose 3 but I doubt it at this point.

      • I’m not saying there is. I’m saying from a fans perspective it’s tough to say at this point who should start. Nice to know we will announce to our next opponent who to prepare for though. As much as I like knowing who will start or play and who is injured and will be out it makes zero sense to announce injuries and such publicly. Coaches get heat for it but it’s smart.

      • Wow.

Mike Riley benched his starter in the middle of a game in the middle of the season.

You’d think JS would remember that moment and realize that sometimes you have to admit you were wrong and go with the next guy.

Hell they did it last year at halftime of the first game when they realized they fucked the chicken bringing in Noyer.

It’s become painfully obvious that these guys suck at QB recruiting and development. JS had success under Petersen as a QB coach, if he doesn’t want to take that on with his own team then he needs to send Lindgren down the road.

        • Riley benched Terrance Bryant for JS mid-season also in ’98. Smith was spectacular in the almost comeback against the Huskies, but his stats were far from impressive the rest of the season. 44.8% completion percentage? I remember a frustrating one-point loss to Cal that would have helped them end the season losing streak and I think Smith was something like 17-53 on the day! JS should know more than anyone when a QB has lost it.

          • It’s interesting how relatable but also unrelatable those two situations are to the current cluster.

Ryan Katz had a rocket right-arm but they struggled through a whole season trying to get him to see the field and then yanked him for the Freshman NFL prospect in Mannion when they knew the team was trash after the Sac-State debacle.

Terrance Bryant suffered Katz’ism too but replacing him with a 5 ft 9er was more palatable than it otherwise would have been as the team was building in year 2 of Smiley and just needed a game manager to not hurt the team so much with misses and giveaways.

I’d say the Bryant/JS situation is much more relatable to where the team is at right now, except Sam Vidlak now plays for Boise State.

Sucks that Gebbia apparently isn’t healthy enough to be the heady 6th year senior captain they need to stabilize for the rest of the season??????

If so, Nolan is really the only option that is prepared and capable of starting and has put up some great performances, so we know he can do it. But we also know how badly he can not do it too. It’s a pretty dramatic inconsistency crisis.

If they lean into switching to BG, it’ll be bumpy as he clearly needs a good portion of the season just to get up to the speed of the game and find out if he’s gonna be able to be successful at actual quarterbacking, or ride the bipolar Nolan wave.

          • Sucks that Gebbia apparently isn’t healthy enough to be the heady 6th year senior captain they need to stabilize for the rest of the season??????

“Apparently”…….That’s the big question. After all, he’s a captain, has been supportive of the other QB’s, and has that W over swoosh. From where I sit health (physical or mental) seems the only explanation.
Would seem weird if JS is focused on his height and batted down passes.

          • I can’t imagine Gebbia isn’t healthy by now. The fact is these clownshoes thought Noyer was the answer last year. I’m not saying Gebbia is the guy, but at this point it seems like they should give everyone their shot in game time.

          • I only say Gebbia because at one point he was the guy. Although I’m sure he won’t answer, I’d like someone in the media to ask Smith what changed besides the injury.

          • Katz also was becoming quite successful at San Diego St. until injuries ended his career. Not Riley involved, but the same crap with McMaryion also.

Stanford will have lost 9 straight conference games after tonight.

I have this sinking feeling that streak will end next weekend.

  86. Any opinions from people who have been to Reser since the clear bag policy was implemented? Sounds like a pain in the ass especially for woman and those bringing kids who need extra stuff for them. Fuck you for basically making us buy one of your stupid clear totes.

  87. The QB situation is totally unacceptable. Looking around the country, its not hard at all to find a legitimately good QB. There are numerous FCS teams with better than the Beavs. If WSU can set a 7 win floor for themselves while having a completely mediocre roster overall, just by having a reliable QB, there is absolutely no excuse for OSU to not be able to do the same.

  88. 5
    2

It is time for all to accept that we have entered Riley 3.0 in the qb drama.
They have rolled the dice on a 3 year run with Nolan, hoping for the payoff in year 3 ala Manion, Canfield etc. The big difference is Nolan has wobbly legs, no pocket awareness, locks onto his receiver, throws off balance and has horribly happy feet in the face of slight pressure. Nolan is unlikely to have that big number season and it is tragic when the team is set to win.

    • Its not like they didnt try to replace Nolan in the offseason. Smith and Lindgren chased several different transfer QBs, Daniels being their closest miss.
But, at the end of the day, they failed to close the deal on a QB again.
So they were stuck trying to sell us on Nolan again

      • I’m really surprised Daniels didn’t come but at the same time not. This team would be so much better with Daniels and his best option but history probably ruined it for him. I wonder if he regrets it.

          • Which is sad. What qb on our roster was so great that you couldn’t guarantee a starting job unless you absolutely shit the bed

          • I’d say that’s typically a good thing but it’s really looking like anyone with a pulse could contend for a stating qb spot on this team. Nolan isn’t a starter for a P12 team. BG might be…hard to say with 2 quarters of work but we’re seeing the effects of losing out on our primary qb targets the last 4-5 years. Shouldn’t be hard to say we’d expect you to start unless you completely shit the bed in spring and fall ball.

  89. Daschel reminds us:
“… there’s OSU’s five red zone opportunities. Four times the Beavers had first and goal, starting at the 10, 5, 8 and 8-yard lines. The situation screamed run the ball. Try to get it inside the 3, then turn it over to Jack Colletto … Instead, OSU passed on first down three times, all incompletions. Out of a possible 35 points in five red zone trips, the Beavers scored nine…”

    • We have Aidan Chiles coming in the spring. He will be pushing for the starting role if not the backup role. It all depends upon how quickly he can adjust to the speed of P5 competition. He’s also young(just turning 17 this fall). I am curious how he does in the spring and fall camps. Plus he’s a true dual threat QB.

Ask the expert… Mike Riley and his wife are at squirrel’s, if anyone wants to pop over and see what he thinks smith needs to do

  92. Kind of late hot takes,

It’s the midterm elections but for the Beavs QB! Who should lead this team going forward? Each candidate has a case to be the starter but it’s the flaws that are in the spotlight.

Nolan – Thought he had taken steps forward after the Fresno game but now is worse than his first year. Why should he be the starter? He won the job out of camp for a reason. That’s all I got. Why shouldn’t he be the starter? It’s clear he’s got no confidence in his passing game. A player that lacks confidence is going to be dangerous to his own team.

Gulbranson – The shiny new toy has no more shine. Why should he be the starter? He has the better arm and he did lead the team into the redzone 5 times. Why shouldn’t he be the starter? It’s clear the game is a little too fast for him, he goes to where the play is designed. Can’t look off defenders yet. Telegraphs the throws resulting in really bad picks. His 63 yard throw was about 62 yards of YAC. Missed a wide open TD throw.

Gebbia – A known unknown. Why should he be the starter? He’s the veteran that knows the offense the best and has started in the past with some success. He’s a team captain for a reason. Why shouldn’t he be the starter? His health is unknown. Dresses for the games and warms up. His arm is no better than Nolan. But if the coaches didn’t put him in the Utah game, there must be something wrong.

The OL kept the QB’s clean again this game so the QBs should be having more success.

If nothing is wrong with Gebbia, he should get the start. He’s the steadier hand. I know Smith wants continuity at QB but results are results. Gulbranson got his taste of real action and will be ready to come in to sub again if needed.

Lucky or maybe not lucky with Stanford this week. Lucky Stanford is struggling mightily. Unlucky that Vegas thinks so highly of the Beavs with issues at QB. Beavs can hopefully rely on the run and won’t need the QBs to win the game with their arm.

Another mid term election at running back!

Three candidates vying to be the 15-20 carry guy. Each guy has a decent case but two are clear leaders. Lowe isn’t considered here because he’s more of a hybrid vs a true RB. Plus he’s been injured for a bit.

Fenwick – a bruiser runner who goes down fairly easily. Why should he be the starter? He softens up the defense. You don’t see many defenders trying to wrap him up head on. They all go for the legs. In the redzone, he’s tough to stop. Why shouldn’t he be the starter? He has no second gear. Longest run in Beavs career is 25 yards.

Griffin – A breath of fresh air. Resembles great Beavers backs of the past. Why should he be the starter? Produced in every game. Has a very good burst and hits the holes with speed. Why shouldn’t he be the starter? Does he have a second gear? His longest career run at GT and OSU is 35 yards. Fenwick has a longer run at OSU.

Martinez – Another shiny toy with no more shine. Why should he be the starter? He’s the future. It seems only experience separates him from the others. Why shouldn’t he be the starter? Conference play started and the speed of the game went way up. Also, does he have second gear? Longest run is 17 yards.

I think Griffin has the clearest case to be the starter. But each guy has his role as well. The one role they do not fit well is third down back. They are missing Lowe a lot in that role. If one of them becomes a receiving threat, that guy will be the starter.

The coaches might want to tweak the roles a bit instead of going with the hot hands theory. Between the 20s is Griffin since he has the most explosion. Redzone and getting out of own endzone is Fenwick because he falls forward. Martinez comes in when they need a breather.

  94. Gulbranson deserves four games before people pass judgment on him. Nolan improved exponentially after his embarrassing first appearance. Say what you will about his recent regression, but he was a completely different QB at his peak than he was when he first entered the middle of a PAC-12 game.

He may not be the answer, but I find it hard to believe the “real” BG is the one we saw last night.

    • Yeah 4 games is about right. I even gave Seth 4 games even though I knew he was hot steaming trash after 1 interview. Haha.

We have no clue yet on Gulbranson. In between those INTs he did some really nice stuff.

      • He almost threw like 3 or 4 other ints. Lindgren was babying him with screen passes and trick plays to drive the field. He started out 1 for 8 and 62 yds because of the Harrison screen pass. He then proceeded to throw an int in the end zone. Which was one of the dumb pass on first and goal plays I believe. I’ve always liked Gulbranson with his potential but had heard that he was turnover prone. I didn’t see anything to contradict that. It’s just 1 game in a tough environment so I’m not counting him out yet.

I think the hard truth is that Nolan gives this team the best chance to win. The coaches said they picked him because he moved the offense down the field the best and was the best decision maker with the ball. Obviously he’s not great with it but he is just really streaky. When he’s on he is probably one of the top QBs in the pac. I think something that is often times overlooked is the QB audibling to the right play. Nolan does this pretty well, Gulbranson did a poor job of this last game. Gebbia is probably the best at this.

I had these last 2 games as losses but I also had Fresno as a loss I think so this team is on track still for my 10-3 prediction. I also didn’t think the Pac would be so solid with the top 8 teams. A few of the team’s look better than I thought they would be.

        • 1
          1

“When he’s on he is probably one of the top QBs in the pac.” When he’s on, its usually at home and/or against lower level conference competition. It may be that his ceiling is taking the Beavers to #4 or #5 in the conference.

Looks like I picked a good weekend to not watch. Lindgren to insecure to run, trying to get to cute on play calling? The red zone calling and results sounds like trash.

I had this pegged as a loss preseason, following a close loss to USC. It doesn’t sound like a week was enough for Nolan to recover.

          v. WSU, @ UW, and v. UO are all probably toss ups at best. Nine wins is possible, but it doesn’t look likely.

    • 3
      1

Playing BG feels like conceding that this season is what it is so it’s time to prepare for the future. Gebbia is gone after this year. USC and Utah losses are in the books. That’s that. Sticking with Nolan or subbing in Gebbia will basically make this season like last season. Win some more games, get to a meh bowl game and probably lose.

      * OR*- get your young gun in the game and let him take his licks. Let the season play out however it’s going to while getting next year’s QB valuable experience.

  95. 1
    1

I am fully on the fire or help get Lindgren out as the OC train regardless of how well the QB’s improve the rest of the season. The play calling was horrible against Utah. Lindgren clearly complicated the game plan and felt like he needed to force the explosive plays rather than let them develop organically. Lindgren has ingenuity and creative plays, but his ability to understand putting your team behind the sticks is essentially telling a batter to swing at the first pitch then bunt then swing for a base hit. He ran Jack Colletto once and it was stopped short of the 1st down. first time he’d been stopped in a long time. So he never went back to running Colletto. Lindgren is grasping at straws with a lot of his play calling as well. The fact we have no continuity or identity of what we’re trying to do, means his confidence in the offense is not there when it comes to building itself.

I called the Jack Colletto pass several plays before it happened and once they ran the double reverse for a TD, I knew the next time we tried it would be a pass. They worked, but they were predictable. I don’t know who we would get as an OC at this point, but it’s got to be someone who can recruit.

Washington State has a QB who came from FCS I believe and they are calling better games than we are right now. I don’t see us winning this weekend. my confidence is shot at this point.
