Home Football First Day of Fall Camp

First Day of Fall Camp

246

Dylan Wynn the first player on the field. No surprise there. Michael Philipp right behind him, a good sign.

Riley's father passes away the first day of fall camp–more Beaver bad luck.  RIP, Bud…

Silverstream, will you be attending practices this Fall?

    • Riley’s calling the plays this season?! If this is true, then we will definitely go 6-6 if not have more wins! Riley calling plays = innovative and veering from “the game plan” depending upon what happens and what happens to be working and not working. hence, we shouldn’t see the “run the ball 3 times in a row and punt” this season.

      • Mike Riley did not say that he would be calling the plays – just that he might. Maybe that means he lets Langsdorf continue to call the plays but he gets overruled by Riley more often.

          • What Riley was quoted as saying, is that he called the plays in the sring and will call them in fall practice to better evaluate various aspects. I have never seen any Riley quote saying he is taking over the play calling, come game time.

…and didnt Katz indeed start the Wisconsin game?

  1. I’ll be attending a few practices this fall, I’ll try and do a few right ups similar to the one I did last season. Couldn’t make practice today, had a mid term.

    • Sweet, if you and Silver could email them to me so I could make them posts that would be good. They get lost in the comment sections…

        • Afghanbeav — happy to share notes and reporting duties. This summer is crazy busy for me at work, but I still hope to attend a few practices each week, and report on what I see and hear….

  2. Brandon Sprague reporting too that Jovan Stevenson is spending time with the DB’s. Maybe an indication of Brown’s potential, Woods’ development reported in the spring, and/or the logjam at RB – Woods, Agnew, Ward, Brown, etc.

I don’t think the move is due to a shortage of DB’s which Riley has called one of the best position groups right after WR.

    • A very cool video. About 50% of it is Quizz though, which is a bit excessive.

Part 2: Steven Jackson, Derek Anderson, MIKE HASS, Alexis Serna, Derrick Doggett.

      • I agree. I’m not sure who made it, maybe they couldn’t find anything decent on them, or maybe they’re lazy. Still I thought it was a pretty decent video.

  3. Athlon has the Beavs at 3-9 this year. That was the lowest forecast I had seen until today. I think many Beaver fans think the team should probably go 5-7 with a realistic shot at 6-6 if they begin to gel. ESPN’s Ted Miller is pretty confident OSU can make a bowl.

The below Pac-12 North preview, however, certainly does not like OSU’s odds this year. Ouch! This would hurt the program badly…

  4. With Jovan Stevenson primarily at DB now, that may mean Chris “Downtown” Brown is set to play this year and will not be redshirted. I think that is definitely the right call. Agnew could have hamstring issues again so a Storm Woods, “Downtown” Brown combo could be key to the nearly 150 yards a game on the ground the Beavs will need to average over 12 games to get to Riley’s wanted 1800 yards rushing during the regular season. That should help put Mannion in less obvious passing situations and limit his interceptions while still allowing him to throw for 3400+ yards on the season.

  5. I call that being a team player, something Ryan Mccants should have done as soon as he lost his job to Quizz. Get on the field and contribute.

    • Wasn’t he listed at 6’1ish 220ish? Sounds like a summer in the weight room and you’re a D1 linebacker! Riley/Banker missed the boat on that one.

      • Exactly.

He was a 4 start prospect too right? Big and fast, just teach him how to tackle and let him loose. Or let him ride the pine for 4 years. Whatever. I will say that it appears the coaching staff has learned from that mistake. They don’t seem to have a problem moving guys around anymore.

        • Bored one day I found myself going deep into the archives of espn blog and read that mccants was suppose to be the next Steven Jackson. That was of course before quizz had hit the scene. Wasn’t mccants also a little injury prone also?

          • he played a lot on special teams, and actually played pretty well as a larry izzo type. makes you think he could’ve handled that role a lot earlier in his career when he was basically on the team to be quizz’s insurance policy.

  6. Angry, we should start a pool to pick the injury da jour for this years camp. Every year we have a rash of one type of injury.

        • I think you have this backward. I’m a poor man’s Mike Remmers.

Kelly is serviceable. He’s not great, but he’s decent if he has a G who can play on the inside with him. Unfortunately, he had nothing to his left last year. Ellis was decent on every other run and non-existent for two years in pass pro.

          • yea… there were certainly plenty of moments where he was beaten like a drum through no fault of the right guard though. i see him more as a quality backup to have who could fill in for a start or two and be serviceable because of his experience more than someone who should be protecting our quarterback every snap of the year. i’m sort of hoping one of the freshman can beat him out.

  7. Is this what happens when you fail at recruiting. Losing 4star Wallace having a ripple effect on the thin depth at DB, so the staff is “forced” to move upperclassmen into positions which will be hard for them to succeed. If Stevenson ever plays again it will only be special teams, which isn’t a bad thing for the team, but imagine if he does have to play corner, yikes! Let’s look at Brandon Hughes having a decent NFL career at DB for the Eagles. He switched from WR after his freshmen year and it took him three years to be effective back there. Jovan has two seasons and one Spring to learn it. If he can be productive at that position by the end of his senior season Rod Perry is a genius.

That is how it always comes back to recruiting.

  8. Also, new pick up at corner

“On Monday afternoon, the Beavers added another cornerback. Steven Christian, a senior transfer from Hawaii enrolled in a master’s program at OSU, watched Monday’s practice and officially was added to the roster in the evening.”

  9. Brandon Sprague had a video up on twitter yesterday of Mike Riley talking to reporters. He was discussing how much he admires coaches who stick with a program to try and make it better and ended by saying that he wants to stay in Corvallis and win a conference championship.

Not surprised the Riley haters haven’t mentioned it on here yet. That shoots to shit about half your criticism of him.

    • What?

I’m not going to speak for everyone, but “half” my criticism is Riley keeps coaches around that under perform.

    • Yeah dammit!

He mentions a goal of winning the conference once after 15 years, and everyone on here makes it sound like he’s never done it!

      Shot to shit!

      ?

It’s looking like he’s actually made tangible changes this year. So I’m going to wait and see what happens early before I tell you what I think of the team. Winning is better than losing is better than quitting. There was too much quitting over the last couple years, and it’s always been evident in non-con games early. Hopefully switching the practice schedule and format works.

Note also that Riley mentioned fundraising for the turf improvements. I know he does work boosters for moola all the time. It’s just a part of a coach’s job. But I don’t recall him ever mentioning that part of his job in such a public forum before except to talk about Al Reser.

Now he needs to bundle everything into one cohesive package. Instead of telling us he would like to win a conference championship one day in the future with some mysterious unknown team from OSU, he should tell us he wants to win that championship this year.

“Is it realistic?” he asks. “Maybe… maybe not,” he answers rhetorically. “But it’s why we go out and play every down of every game,” he says, “We have a purpose with every snap.”

      • Being competitive in all but 1 or 2 games would be progress for this team. Seems like in college football there’s always a blowout or two – particularly for a team like OSU that’s weak on both lines.

Playing well in all 3 phases of the game for 3 of 4 quarters would be progress for this team – if they could do it for 4 quarters consistently I’d be astounded.

        • I didn’t say they had to play well every quarter of every game. They just can’t quit.

The two most egregious examples I can recall would be Wazzu at home two years ago and @ Cincy in 2007. I didn’t see the Cal game last year, but it sounded like our “once every four years we lay an egg” against them. We didn’t even show up ready to play against Boise in 2004 and 2006… or Louisville in 2005… or Penn State or Wisconsin or BYU or on and on and on.

And what’s the deal with not being able to beat UCLA? It has taken some seriously bad football to lose to them recently.

We have to stop losing before we step on the field. At least play the game first.

          • I understood your point, I was just making it clear it would be stunning to me if offense, defense, and special teams ALL executed well for four quarters…

Even in victories (e.g. Stanford a few years back), it seems like one or more units takes a quarter or two off.

“We have to stop losing before we step on the field.” As Angry has said, this is a team that “hopes” to win, rather than believes it can. I think the whole lunchbucket and “upset’ themes play into that too much and reenforce an underwhelming team attitude. It’s interesting in the videos I linked below that team members are talking about the rose bowl…I’m glad to hear it even if its not in the realm of possibility this season.

          • I don’t think any of us in here are in a position to determine that the team only “hopes” to win instead of believing it. Unless we have some players and coaches in here posting, then I might be wrong.

          • That’s the noise they’ve always made prior to this year. Riley’s still trying to get a handle on being firm in his goals for this season saying things about qualifying this year’s team effort and attitude by comparing them to previous teams’ efforts and attitudes… and not wanting to short the other teams’ seasons for this team’s glory.

I think I know what he means. But he’s not a diplomat. He’s the head coach of this team right now. Clearly, there have been teams in prior seasons which were not ready to play and/or had no focus. One could point to Septembers forever and say that all teams were not ready to play every down of every game.

We’re talking here about the difference between hoping for something and working toward something. When you’re at the office, you know who is diligent and who is just watching the clock. It’s no different in football.

          • Nope. More importantly though is that we as fans have been excluded from helping our team reach for their goals. If all they want to do is play in front of their coaches, family and the fans of the opposition, then by all means exclude us. But a sports team is much more than just the team itself. Publicly stating goals gives us direction and expectations and give meaning to the previously hollow media statements about wanting to play well or how the pieces all fit… or don’t/didn’t fit.

There’s one thing I learned over the years about borrowing money or time. People ALWAYS want to know why they should be the ones to lend them. It’s not that they don’t trust you. It’s that they want to know their efforts won’t be in vain. If you don’t have a decent answer, that’s when they start mistrusting you.

          • You’re talking about identifying goals. I think that’s a separate issue from fans determining whether the team is hoping vs. believing. It’s too much of an internal process for an outsider to make a judgement.

          • That’s the point. Do you consider yourself an outsider or a part of the process? Does the team exist if we don’t care about it?

Internal goals are easy. Everybody wants to win. Duh!

But when they don’t appear to even try to walk the talk, then the weaker the talk, the weaker the walk. It’s easy to assume everyone wants to win. But if they don’t say it then follow nothing up with more of nothing, it’s easy to assume they don’t want to try hard enough to meet that baseline of assumptions for ALL athletes.

All that leaves is wishing, hoping, praying and whatever other voodoo someone can come up with to replace hard work.

        • I think that’s why I have enjoyed being a beavers fan the past decade. Sans the last two years (and probably multiple other games) I feel like we have had a shot to win every game. We were not like a California that would roll over. We were always a couple drives away and sometimes drove down and won the game.

      • Note also that Riley mentioned yesterdays practice in getting in and out of huddles. I expect to see some great improvements this year in huddling. (Except when its time crucial of course).

    • How does that shoot to shit anyting said about him? What Riley said is just talk. His actions in recent years seem to indicate he in fact no longer cares about winning. Lets a dullard call plays, doesnt recruit well, doesnt get the team ready for the start of the season, etc….

Riley sticking with the program the past three seasons has gone from a winning season to a 5-7, and to a 3-9. What is he shooting for, a 0-12?

I dont hate Riley, but I do hate his direction the past three years.

  10. Some videos to check out:

    http://www.kval.com/sports/insidethepac/165210046.html

Interviewer to Brown: “You don’t have a true freshman’s body…” and “Do you want to play this year our redshirt?” Brown: “I want to play this year…” Want’s Quizz’s number because “he likes it” and it would “motivate him to fill his shoes…”

Woods says he needs to work on pass blocking most, feels comfortable with the rest of the game.

    Also interviewed: Riley, Mannion, Poyer.

    • I like that they’re openly talking about winning the conference and going to the Rose Bowl. Obviously, only one team from the conference can go. But you don’t get there unless you start out in that direction in the first place.

Something has changed for the better IMO. Now I want to see it all translate to a change in play on the field.

Even Riley is continuing this theme. Is this a chicken or egg thing? Or should I care? Should I just be happy that our team is finally starting to make noises like a team should to start every year?

Riley’s most recent tweet is a RT:
      https://twitter.com/ShawnHeilbron/status/232884705060597760

  11. If our ath. dept. is wondering what graphics to put in our endzones this year why don’t they put the UO logo since, as usual, the Disco ucks will be using our end zones a lot more than us in the Civil War.

  12. Hmmm… there was a RB PSA at practice yesterday, and there’s one there today who was at the Sac State game as well.

Do we think Terrell Newby might be committing to Nikegon soon?

  13. OT – i guess the basketball team is practicing right now in preparation for a trip to europe. as i understand it, d1 teams get to travel abroad to play a series of exhibition games against high level talent during the off season every fifth year. the last time the beavers went was the 0 and 18 year (07-08). something tells me this year’s group might get more out of the trip. anybody know who they’re playing/where they’re going?

    • Four games on the trip:
The men’s basketball team will fly to Paris on Aug. 18 and is scheduled to play four games on the 11-day trip that includes stops in Barcelona and Madrid – vs. St. Charles Basketball Club of Charenton/St. Maurice on Aug. 21; vs. Manresa of the Spanish Professional League on Aug. 24; vs. Real Canoe National Club on Aug. 26; and vs. Club Baloncesto Estudiantes on Aug. 27.
      http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/080212aac.html

        • There might be a chance for that. If we can figure out if the games are on TV, oleoletv.com, Live TV 8, Spain has all the Spanish channels streamed. So we need the local coverage schedule first.

    • Heh heh… I keep having this image of Alex strapped into the chair for the Ludovico Treatment… except it’s this site on the screen instead of the constant strobe of disturbing images.

    • It is very easy to ignore something/someone. When you see their name, skip to the next series. I used to do it all the time when anyone would bring up uniform combinations.

I, for one, enjoy some of Jack’s posts. He is very informative on all matters basketball. Occasionally he does get a bit preachy and his political responses are opinions presented as facts, but overall I think he adds to the value of this site. Variety is the spice of life, if he says things that you don’t agree with, good – that is free speech and I’m sure that there is something to be learned (even if it is only to see what the opposition believes).

  14. Season tickets have arrived in my mailbox. First new thing I notice is the tickets each have a message printed on them telling the fans which color to wear. “Wear Orange” or “Wear Black”

Orange games: Nicholls State, Wisconsin, WSU, ASU, Oregon

    Black games: Utah, CAL

Also, Terry Baker is on the Civil War ticket. It says “Terry Baker-Oregon State’s Heisman 1962-2012” (He didn’t die did he? I don’t remember seeing anything about it in the news- maybe they’re predicting something awful to happen this year?)

Others getting their picture on a game ticket are Feti Unga, Andrew Seumalo, Jordan Poyer, Scott Crichton, Sean Mannion and Markus Wheaton.

Another change this year…no free pass to stay at Spirit Mountain…bummer

      • It’s been said that they are longer, but that’s only a myth. They’re more “show-ers” and the Orange games are “grow-ers”

    • Guessing they’re honoring Baker’s 50 yr anniversary. Do they highlight the “50” at all? If not it would seem like a bit of an oversight.

      • There isnt any reference to the number 50 or any type of anniversary . the way the dates are written you would think he died and theyre remembering him. the carls Jr coupons on the backside are still intact though, and this year we get 7 instead of 6!

    • there’s still the coupon for a free carl’s jr. burger with the purchase of medium fries and a medium drink (cheap bastards) though right?

  15. Another decent article by John Hunt. Banker (apparently) listing specific goals, has he ever done this in the past??

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2012/08/oregon_state_beavers_football_93.html

“…their current defensive goals: Give up 3.3 yards or less per rush (it was 4.8 last year), allow opponents to convert third down less than 30 percent of the time (47 percent last year) and allow touchdowns on 40 percent or less of opponents’ red zone opportunities (81 percent in 2011). ”

On the topic of goals, would it make sense to set goals in the area of penalty yds and turnover ratio?
Is there a danger in setting too many goals? Thoughts?

    • I think these are a major improvement and allow coaches and players to measure progress and find out where improvements are needed.

3.3 ypc in CW would be refreshing.

    • Uh Mark – you have to recruit better players in order to improve the stats and this year’s team does not appear to have better players in the DT position.

So I guess I’d have to say (until proven different): Dream On Mark, Dream On.

    • I understood that statement as these have been ongoing team defensive goals with the major caveat is never going back to measure progress. Banker says this will be first time he plans to recap progress based on the stats in effort to regain reality. This is a good thing. Tangible goals are important and need to be held up to scrutiny.

Negatively, Banker spoke on fear using fancy schemes. He pointed out vs Cal where he dialed up a scheme to the right spot and despite that, it was a 64 yard gain. That’s not helping him realise the need to get outside his comfort box and use the talent he has to hide the the talent he’s missing.

In Riley interviews I noted a slightly different tone. Not sure if it’s a loss of a father tone, or a realization of recent failures tone. Sure he’s still saying things are “neat,” but I’m sensing something different… Hopefully it’s the realization that improved methods are required ASAP.

Also I noticed, when ever media ask about any particular starter, it’s obvious that coaches are told to include mention of back up. IE when langs is asked about Mannion relationship, he must mention Vaz. Riley does that too, just an observation.

    • Goals must be SMART.

      S-pecific
      M-easurable
      A-ttainable
      R-ealistic
      T-ime-Oriented

as long as goals are smart, I don’t think there is a limit on setting goals.

    • Ah ha!

They’ve hired a sports psychologist. I thought the rhetoric was sounding familiar.

No. There’s no danger in setting too many goals. There’s only danger in not following up with any or all of them due to frustration (i.e. quitting). See them through and realize that only one team gets to crown themselves champion at the end of the year. Everyone else fails to meet their overall goal. Disappointment is a part of life, and life goes on.

      • alright my gig is up. I am not a sports psychologist. But I do remember these SMART goals from my HHS 231 class. Come to think of it, all the athletes should know about these, it is required class for all students.

  16. As Progressive pointed out above Jaswha James, a 247 lb linebacker, has been moved to the DL. For some reason I’m not encouraged by that news.

It appears that the Beavs are scrambling when it comes to the DL and DB positions.

    And then there’s the OL.

    PASS THE MAALOX PLEASE.

    • It’d be nice if we could just recruit some legit DTs out of high school. Didn’t Frahm and Andrew Seumalo (who is supposed to be our savior this year at DT) both start out as DEs? I’m all for moving guys to where they are better suited to help the team, but the DT position seems like it’s been a recruiting problem for awhile now.

    • James seemed to have legitimate size for a MLB that OSU has been missing. So take a legitimate MLB and turn him into an undersized DT?

While it’s nice to hear players talk about the Rose Bowl, it’s tough to watch the coaches’ roster moves indicate coaches are planning a move to the Big Sky Conference….

    • Shouldn’t this be the type of thing that we should push Hunt or someone else to follow up on. This type of practice is awful. I think journalistic pressure could definitely fix this situation.

      • Yep. Not mentioning a cancelled check or a VISA statement leads me to believe the dude just forgot, should there even be a shred of truth in this little anecdote.

    • I agree with the no proof crowd. Just show them your canceled check or credit card receipt/statement. This isn’t rocket science Bill. Sucks but come on, this isn’t the end of the world. Pick from one of the other 30,000 seats and try to forget that you forgot to renew.

Should OSU be calling every season ticket holder that doesn’t renew? Something to think about but that’s a lot of calling.

  17. This sad story just reflects the environments created by BDC. Bob will do things only under pressure, not on his own accord. Some shoot me down for my thoughts on BDC and Mike Riley, but they will eat their words when this season is over…..or maybe before. Last month I received 8 emails and 4 letters asking for money from various OSU offices……..they just don’t get it yet.

    • Clearly the college kids who run these phones did not address this issue properly. But, you may be jumping to conclusions here. Maybe he actually did forget to renew his tickets. Or maybe he ordered his tickets through the mail and somehow it never made it to the OSU ticket office. Bill should have noticed that his bank account was not debited for the tickets he thought he purchased. If his account was debited and he still didn’t get his tickets, then Bill should sue.

    • LOL. I am getting flashes of the day we talked about Confirmation Bias in intro psych class back in school.

Fightin, I can’t recall if you ever gave one, but what is your win/loss prediction for this season? And you can only pick as many losses as there are games on the schedule.

    • All OSU CEM grads are conditioned to reflexively point out that the slab is being PLACED, not poured.

We have Chukar Bob Phelps to thank for that.

      • That’s funny.

You have to appreciate how engineers think sometimes. Talking to them on-site is like hearing that your regional VP has called a mandatory meeting. Great… I have to waste how much time talking about this instead of doing it? I can’t tell you how many times I scheduled pours for Friday mornings–the usual time for such meetings.

Slabs are poured. Technically, I guess you could say slab forms are placed instead of set. But slabs are poured.

Tilt-walls are placed… after they’re formed (at a place btw) then poured.

        • No. And no.

You are evidently not a graduate of the OSU School of Civil Engineering. And if you were, there would be a movement afoot to tear the patches off your tunic, break your saber in half, and show you to the gate of the fort.

Quit scheduling mud for Fridays…we got important shit to talk about, k?

  18. OT – Orange and Black: A return to the OSU image refresh topic….

While OSU’s athletic department and marketing have clear challenges in generating an aesthetic that is slightly modern yet respectful of OSU’s “old school” tradition, I continue to see examples from other sectors that have the potential to inform OSU uniforms for its athletic programs as well as for fan apparel.

DON”T LAUGH – but look at the color application to this car:

    http://www.vwvortex.com/features/project-cars/vwvortex-beetle-rs-2/

I’m not suggesting that OSU become the “beetles,” but the application of matte colors with the orange is striking and with more black, the kind of approach that could produce some appealing OSU products.

I have also noted that Trek Bicycles are producing some orange/white/black color schemes that look fantastic.

I’ve also pointed out some soccer teams that seem to be doing a better job with Orange….

Point is, other people can figure out how to use orange and black, and there are multiple sources for inspiration. Sometime OSU has to figure it out; its their official colors.

  19. Right on cue ObjCritic, I just mentioned above how I tune out when discussion turns to uniforms and our color schemes, and then you post something about our colors. Thanks for that, I may be the only one laughing right now, but it was a nicely timed chuckle for me.

For the record, I still think winning is more important to our image than anything the marketing dept or anyone else does.

    • I agree on the winning, but for recruit interest, and the fan’s interest AND motivation to purchase and wear OSU-branded gear, changes are needed. Think back to the Seahawks “reboot,” when they moved away from the original color combination in part because they wanted fans to have clothing they could wear somewhere besides the stadium…the color contrast was simply to great and garish.

      • I wear OS stuff probably 4 times per week. I have never had anyone comment on the “cartoon beaver” or the vivid black versus matte. I have been ribbed about the poor play on the field. Just not as big of issue as you make it out to be. I don’t think the Seachickens got a huge rush of fans because of their “reboot” either.

Maybe it is because I am a guy that really doesn’t care about this stuff. Maybe I am just an outlier. But, I just don’t think the average 4 star recruit won’t come to OS because of the mascot or colors.

        • On-field uniforms should be well designed. I am always amazed and disgusted by uniforms that uniforms that are patently ugly but still kept as equipment. Is there something in the suppliers contract that demands/requires each supplied uniform to actually be worn in games? If not I cant imagine why some unis are actually used.

UO, for instance, apparently has a zillion uniform alternatives, and on occasion wears something UGLY at first glance. Why?

        • I don’t think the Seahawks got more fans, I think they’re fans wore their gear more frequently and consistently.

I would like wearing OSU gear more often, but don’t because so much of it is poorly and cheaply done.

          • The hawks have likely lost me with their new unis. Those things are a clown suit waiting for their ugly card.

Then again, as a Blazers fan, I might find some bias against the team owned by a guy who has forgotten his roots. I loved the owner who sat courtside in a flannel and full on beard. I can’t stand the impotent ass who runs the hawks.

    • Well, this is really bad news. Likely won’t pitch at all next season. Means Andrew Moore probably jumps into the rotation unless Adam Duke is somehow healthy. That just sucks. The rotation would have been so damn good. Bad break.

  20. @beaverkman RT:@LindsayRae19 First play of contact aaaaand … offensive lineman Colin Kelly gets hurt. Ice on his left knee. Done for the day I’m thinking.

  21. As opposed to last year when there were not enough backups on the roster for a full 2 player per position depth chart on the o line. This would be a really good time (very small window) to scour the jc lists for a player with 3 years eligibility but able to qualify now. Hasiak can’t be the only kid in the country that went to summer school.
