An Ominous Sign for Beaver Faithful

42

I’m not into conspiracy theory, but I am a man of the world, and so as college football becomes more about old, crotchety white men cashing in on young, black kids, I keep my eyes wide and look for indicators that portend outcomes. For example, check this out:

http://www.primesport.com/shop/package_rosebowl.asp

The official Rose Bowl (travel) site has both an Ohio State and Oregon package.

Apparently, we lost the Civil War.

This is really my biggest fear. Even more than Masoli or James. It’s that there’s more money in having Oregon win (and U$C at the Sun or Holiday Bowl), and so we’ll see the phantom holding calls on Beaver TDs and the type of corrupt officiating we saw in the USC game. Should we preemptively write the commissioner and head of officiating and beg for a fair game? What kind of pressure can we fans place on the powers at be to just get a fair shot? Should we write the Rose Bowl committee and ask why they are selling Oregon and Ohio State packages when that fate has not yet been decided?

Or has it?

I think tomorrow I will call and ask for the nonexistent Oregon State package and see what they say. Actually, I suggest everyone do the same and we compare notes and then go from there. This is weird. Get indignant.

*NOTE* The Oregon package has been removed and it’s now just Ohio State. Go Angrybeavers.

  1. That appears to be a private company that is partnered with the rose bowl. That issue should be raised to the rose bowl committee. I imagine that the company is poorly run, they won’t likely be the partner next year.

    • It says “official travel package partner” (of the rose bowl). So, I can only assume the committee knows of and supports these packages. Right?

      This is scary.

      Somebody hold me.

  2. It’s just disheartening to see things like this. And ESPN announcing that Oregon goes to the Rose Bowl with a win (but not mentioning the Beavs go if they win). Just little things like that make you realize how hard the odds are stacked.

I think the one great equalizer is that the entire nation will be watching, as it’s a huge game and a Thursday night telecast. The pac-10 will not want to tarnish their already reprehensible reputation with regards to officiating.

    • I would be hard pressed to believe that Jay’s infamous crew shows up on a huge game like this. Also, all of this hype in favor of Oregon only has to piss off our players even more. Even if everything is stacked in their favor, we still go if we win. The fact that we are totally ignored will only make this even sweeter if we win.

With respect, I think that people are making too much of the “ESPN says Ducks can go to the Rose Bowl with a win” stuff. If you read anything about the OSU-WSU game anywhere, they all mention that OSU will go to the Rose Bowl with a Civil War victory.

The difference is that UO played in a high-profile game on Saturday, so there was a lot more coverage for that game. And just as the lead for the OSU-WSU game is always “OSU controls its destiny for the Rose Bowl”, so too is that the lead for any UO story. If OSU had beaten Cal, USC, UA, et al. on Saturday, you’d see a lot more balanced coverage in that regard.

I’d like to add that Chip Kelly isn’t giving an interview on Jim Rome’s show this week, but Mike Riley is.

    • I wish the USC game would have been national. That’s why I hate the ABC telecasts. So many are regional. We in Nebraska where watching some shit game, probably Texas beating the crap out of someone instead of the Beavs who were in a good game. And no switching over either. And believe me, I know my fellow Huskers would have loved to see USC get beat, and would have been livid and the B.S. officiating as Husker Nation also has developed a deep contempt for the Trojans.

We also had to watch Texas drop their 51st point on Kansas (20), while the Ducks and Zona where in a nail biter. Even as the game ended, there was no flipping over. Not on ABC, not on ESPN, and not on ESPN 2. And I have Dishnetwork, which even has some ESPN Alternate channels, and those were blank. I suppose it was on ESPN Gameplan for the out of area people. It’s sad how much money is involved. Especially when ESPN/ABC is pimping out the games. Doesn’t ESPN now own the BCS rights? Fox used to I believe, but isn’t it now ESPN? They will really be pushing for high dollar BCS games, and the Beavs just don’t fit their propoganda, big market ideals.

I don’t think that your theory is a Conspiracy Theory Angry. Big, old, fat, white males are notorious for being bought and sold by the highest bidder or where the most greenbacks are found. It’s a fact. Refs know who the guy signing their paychecks and assigning them to certain games wants to see win. It’s not a huge stretch by any means.

I hope the Beavs just play lights friggin’ out and the Ducks fold.

  3. It looks like whatever you guys did worked, the Oregon package has come down and its just the Ohio State package. Be careful calling as asking for the OSU package, this thing is likely to come down to OSU v OSU. rose bowl for the right to be called THE.

    • Wow, that was fast. I wrote Ted Miller about it and called/left them a message asking for a return call explaining why there was an oregon but not oregon state package.

Between this and getting that ref suspended, our blog has become the Michael Moore/Bob Woodward of BeaverNation.

      • Someone’s gotta do it. Nice work everyone! The difference with Moore and Woodward seems to be that Woodward worked for the big Main Stream Media whores that back then used to be the ones trying to dig up the injustices, but now are the one’s pimping this kind of hype. Moore is a single person, trying to do the job of what the media used to do. In essence, this blog has to do the job of what maybe the Gazette or the Oregonian should have been doing. Or maybe even someone at ESPN with a soul. As our Media outlets have been “Springerized” and having to push sensationalistic crap to sell, the bloggers of the world are out there doing the real “reporting”. Sad.

        My take anway.

        • I don’t find it sad, I find it interesting. Everyone likes a “one man versus the world” story, right? It’s the plot of almost every sci-fi novel. Not that I like sci-fi, but my point is that it’s a plot with intrigue. To me it’s normal that higher ups would be against justice, because there’s no money in it.

Has anyone received any explanation from primesport? I’m going to call them again today, harass them for an explanation, tape record it, and post their response here for the public. If anyone received an email response post it, as it might save me from having to do the embarrassing-for-my-age plan I just outlined.

      • “getting that ref suspended”… you delusional ass-clown. You and this shit-heap of a blog didn’t do squat. The single biggest piece of ammo was a photo shot by an independent photo-journalist who captured a rapid succession of photos clearly showing the infraction, as well as the retarded ref whose eyes were on it the entire time.

  4. Angry,

I think you should also get credit for Tuimanei #28 being ousted from his starting role. People were blasting the WHOLE secondary, which is just wrong. You started the call for his removal, and eventually it happened. :)

Or, we can at least TRY to add that notch. haha

You should also be happy that five years from now, your site will be featured in a Canzano article (as FireRiley.com finally got press, and that was a far less superior blog and page)….however, people will still not like you because you ask much needed questions, and if there’s anything I’ve learned about American society they hate people asking questions or looking for the third point of view.

(or noting an obvious conspiracy a-brewin)

  5. Yes, we all got the ref suspended whilst you sat around doing nothing but stewing about us getting the ref suspended, and you had a month to think up an insult/reply and this is what you came up with. Funny.

  6. Non sequitur time…

Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops both say definitely no for going to Notre Dame, which is what they have to say and doesn’t really mean much given the situation. They wouldn’t get a considerable pay boost to rebuild a team under scrutiny like no other program, so neither seems likely to leave their current teams.

More likely candidates include Kelly (Cincy), Petersen (BSU), Patterson (TCU), Johnson (GT) and of course Harbaugh. Harbaugh might like the challenge, but I think he likes the Pac 10. Notre Dame will probably spend months checking and re-checking Johnson’s resume before they offer him. The two P’s are great coaches, but how would they stand up to the scrutiny at ND? I think Kelly would be the best choice of these coaches.

    But…

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest what Notre Dame should do with the money they’re about to spend.

Seek out and hire Bill Cowher.

Michigan is giving RichRod another shot, so his firing is at least delayed until week 7 or 8 of next year. I think this is a good plan since Chip Kelly will likely not have to buy himself out of his current contract after next year.

  7. If you hire Kelly or Johnson you’re going with a spread offense, and I just can’t see Notre Dame going that route. I think they go after Harbaugh, big time, especially if he beats them this weekend. Harbaugh makes the most sense. After that, I’d think Peterson, but I don’t see Peterson wanting to live in that part of the country.

  8. Notre Dame’s last great team (under Holtz) was a spread much like Kelly runs. Johnson would take them back to the Rockne days. So I don’t think the faithful would argue against either on the O-side. What both seem to do is scheme well on defense, and any defense would be a good defense at ND. I agree that Harbaugh would be a good choice, but the only reason he goes is for the money. He has as big a challenge getting Stanford to win consistently in the Pac 10 with the same enrollment obstacles and much lower expectations. They might like him just for his… um… love for USC.

But I still think Bill Cowher would usher in an amazing era of Notre Dame football. They have the horses, they just lack someone to inspire them to go out and play gritty, hard-nosed football.

  9. Anyone notice that on the CBS Sports Poll we are ranked #20 while Cal is #14? We each have the same record while we have a head to head victory and a better conference record. In addition it shows our strength of schedule on there, we even have a harder strength of schedule. I understand being a Beaver and that the rest of the national media doesn’t give us any love but seriously, wow.

    • Where do they have Boise State and TCU on that list? And is it compiled by fans or writers?

I don’t think respect has much with where you play or who you are; college football has become all about scheduling and perception. For example, Boise State beat Oregon, so the perception is they’re a great team. On the flip side, when the Beavers played teams perceived to be great, they choked. If I weren’t following the team closely I could see why people have the views they do. The Beavers got into the rankings by beating the good/marginal teams and crawling their way up, but the two marquee games (USC and Cincy, where a win equaled a definite ranking), they choked.

      • I agree we have choked in those marquee games. In years past marquee wins haven’t usually meant too much. The poll is composed of staff writers, editors and producers. Largely it looks similar to all other polls, including TCU at 4 and BSU at 6.

  10. Anyway, the whole scenario might just come down to one man taking over at his previously described ‘dream job’. I’ll paraphrase, but the sentiment is easily understood:

    I’m not leaving Bowling Green.
    I’m not leaving Utah.
    I’m not leaving Florida.

Maybe he should walk over to Billy Donovan’s office and ask him how staying worked out for him. I think Donovan still coaches there.

  11. Does anyone remember the Blues Brothers quote that the Beaver Mobile put on the back of it’s van when we were headed to the Fiesta Bowl? I think in 9 days….Beavs Win!

I just have a really good feeling. Also Angry, did you read Buker’s O blog about how Kristick didn’t understand last year the Rivalry between OSU and the ucks? I mean, how could the players and coaches not emphasize how big this rivalry is?! I mean it’s the biggest rivalry west of the Mississippi for crying out loud!!!!

    http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/2009/11/post_11.html

  12. Primesport will not answer their phone or return my calls.

I sat on hold for ten minutes then it went to a machine, again. Last night was understandable, but this is during regular business hours.

I want to know how they knew Oregon would be in the Rose Bowl, or at least why they’re willing to give the Beavers a gnawing chance today.

    • Not trying to defend Primesport here, and I did NOT see the original ad they placed. Is it POSSIBLE that they were referring to Oregon as the state….not the school? If they had Duck logos and all the stuff in the ad, then obviously not. Just asking, cuz this seems like a pretty blatant presumption and faux pas on their part.

  13. Last year was the first year where there were only Riley’s recruits on the team, which means this is just the second year. Both teams have gone into the final game playing for the possibility of a Rose Bowl. Just thought this was an interesting fact.
