Oral Roberts Write Up

79

JackBeav did nice work here.

Oral Roberts is good as a team. But they’re small. They play with four guards most of the time and try to force the pace. Because of their size, they will play a match-up zone for most of the game. If you see them in man, expect it to drop into zone. They’re led by Billbury and Emegano. Billbury isn’t a threat from the floor. Emegano is. They have one kid who takes nothing but treys, Webber, but he doesn’t make a lot. And they have another who is a pretty decent scorer, Word. They aren’t awesome in face-up D, but they help well. And they will gather at the rim and use their athleticism to block shots on dribble drives. They will do a nice job preventing post entry most of the time. But once it’s in the post they are pretty weak. Because of that they have a tendency to collapse with the ball. They’re set up to defend dribble entry and motion offenses. They are not set up well to defend high post swings or high-low games.

Contain Emegano and keep both him and Billbury off the glass and off the line, and make some perimeter shots. That’s about all you have to do to shut them down. Easier said than done depending on how the refs call the game. And by “contain” I mean don’t be scared if he gets his points. But there will be times he needs to be shut out in order for us to control the pace.

Billbury and Emegano get a ton of ticky-tack calls. But the team does not box out well on the defensive end… probably because they play a zone where they’re chasing the ball the whole time. They have one plodding big in Owens. He’s a big boy with decent hands and terrible feet. But he can eat up space. the other “bigs” will be Henderson, Conley and Wilson. All of them are a physical 6’5-6″ at about 230 pounds by the looks of them. They like to push above the waist a lot when clearing the blocks. While Conley has the best hands and feet of any of them and the better ability to score, all three have five fouls to give. And they will give them if we challenge them in the post or dribble entry.

I’m not a fan of Coach Sutton’s playing on the refs’ instead of playing the game. He’ll play hack-the-bigs and cry for his guards to get to the line. It’s a gameplan I guess.

It will be important for us to play inside out tonight. We don’t have to score inside, but we need to establish a presence, make their defense collapse and kick it out. It will also be important to gather their post fouls early while our bigs don’t have to shoot free throws after every cross check. Their defense will sag until we can show we can hit the trey. And when we do, their guards will go all matador, another reason all their bigs are hack machines.

While I don’t like their style, they do play well with each other and work the system well. What I described above would be easy pickings for a good team. Beating them is a matter of playing well. But I see a tendency for us to get hurried and impatient early in the second half, both in transition and in the half court. The adjustments are there. But it’s almost as if our guys see how the game opens up for them, and they get too excited. It’s almost always at about the 13 minute mark before we settle down and start working again.

No analysis for meaningless games, as our time is better spent elsewhere.

I like the Huskies in this one. Something like 31-23 seems about right.

More on Rape and Riley

63

So for the longest time I have hated feminists (specifically for the logical inconsistencies and anti-male attitudes). But I do think they have one thing right, this idea of “rape culture” (though I think it is a derivative of “mob mentality”)…

The Brenda Tracy story, the Steubenville case, Mike Riley, Joe Pa, now this in Rolling Stone (“You’re still upset about that?” Andy asked one Friday night when Jackie was crying…sounds much like Mike Riley’s comment), and the hundreds of other cases that occur daily that we never hear about. Doesn’t seem to matter if the victims or male or female, really. The culture of rape is the same: the victim is to blame, victim is a liar, victim is a slut, society doesn’t understand the mental trauma because it didn’t happen to them, we don’t want to ruin the lives of guys with potential over some silly girl, or some variant of these.

Take this genius post from EugeneBeaver in the last rape thread (because apparently we need two rape threads here to get the point across that you should never rape someone?):

You’re trying to compare something that happened in 1998 and a coaching trying to build a program. To a guy in 2007 ( I think when Coye got removed) who has his program established. Furthermore things are vastly different in 1998 vs 2007 and now.

You’re reaching and you know it!

How you think and act now is different then what you would have done 16 years ago and its different from how you will act/think in 16 years later.

Do you honestly think for one second if the same thing happened today (prior to this article) that Riley would not have done something more then a 1 game suspension?

And my response:

So the rules are that if you’re building a program, gang rape is okay. If the program is established, gang rape isn’t okay. Good one, dude! Keep that hamster wheel turning.

Seriously, what kind of idiot (sub 20 IQ) argument is that?

This “Yes means Yes” law here in California is atrocious. If it passes, it will penalizes all college attending citizens, even the innocent, because of a few subhuman retards. It is especially damning to males as they are guilty from the start and have to prove innocence. This is never acceptable. But it begins to look acceptable due to the attitude toward rape. That is, one can suddenly make this [unconstitutional] argument look reasonable: if people can’t stop rationalizing rape, then the State is left with little choice but to stop the sex. Both are equally disgusting. People need to grow the fuck up, and the adults (e.g. coaches at Steubenville, Mike Riley, Joe Pa) who either encourage the behavior or turn a blind eye should not be acquitted. Mike Riley is a guilty man. Good luck both defending that statement and appearing rational/sane.

Oregonian Article Made Me Laugh

First off, is this newsworthy for a 5-5 team? I guess it’s fine to briefly mention it like they did, but they take it a step further [into the ridiculous] with this:

The Beavers have the best home winning percentage against top-10 teams since 2000 (5-5) of any unranked FBS team, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Just seems like a huge reach to find something positive. (a) narrowing it down to home winning percentage is odd (b) they then narrow it down to top 10 teams, and as we know Riley is 14-42 vs top 25 teams (c) the word “unranked” should be negative, but the stat spins this as a positive.

It is a very odd stat and a good example how statistics can be misleading. For example, you have to wonder maybe the Beavs have just been unranked more often than the teams below them. Of course we don’t get that half of the equation. I know most will say “Angry, this is good for our National perception so why are you complaining?” I’m not. Just pointing out the BS/weirdness of it. If I am angry about anything it’s the mild insinuation in this article that everything’s now okay with Oregon State football. Ted Miller loves Riley and gets annoyed annually with fans who want to see a change.

7pm tip.

This is the only writeup I’ve seen on the game.
