NiceBeaver said no surprises expected, but you never know. Let’s hope the momentum continues into the recruiting cycle, and we can pull something off.

Once we get the signings, I’ll do previews and give my rankings over the coming days.

Go Beavs!

You must have missed all the “BG isn’t good enough” posts. Everyone wants to replace you with some guy from the Clemson message boards.

  1. The Washington boyz and the two superstars of this class are in!

    David Wells – WR
    Cooper Jensen – TE
    Aidan Chiles – QB
    Kelze Howard – DL

  2. Added some more:

    Zander Esty – OL
    Andre Jordan Jr – DB
    Isaiah Chisom – ILB
    Abraham “JoJo” Johnson – DL

Only players left to sign are:

    Nikko Taylor – DL
    Leonard Ah You – LB
    Zachary Card – WR

  3. I like no surprises on signing day. Get your guys, “OKG” I think someone called it. These boys are all in, buying into the culture JS has established.
Now please go get us a quarterback….

We have a QB in Aidan Chiles and BG. Just need to add 1 more for depth and insurance in case Aidan needs to Redshirt this year to develop. Aidan will be on campus for Winter Term in January so he will be able to workout with the team for 8 solid months before Fall camp. This will allow him to get timing down on routes and do team workouts. He should be an impact leader early on with this team.

Bruh you’re tripping if you’re banking on Chile’s. You know how many fana and programs have put their faith in. A highly rated recruit? Look at the portal. I’m not saying Chile’s isn’t or can’t be the guy but to bank on him being a depth guy is a mistake. The QB position needs to be upgraded period. I’m tired of these arguments about Ben being 8-1. Thats despite Ben not because of him. Good QB equals a chance at the championship and playoffs this season. Quit lying to yourselves.

        • I’ve been intrigued by this Deacon Hill kid who’s from CA, 3* who originally committed to Wiscy, offers from K State and UCLA too, and is looking for a transfer opportunity. Seems like he might appreciate coming back west, getting a chance to compete, and would add depth to the QB position:

          https://247sports.com/player/deacon-hill-46053378/

“Big, strong signal caller with a powerful down field arm. Might have the strongest arm in the ’21 class but is more then just a big arm, he’s a pure thrower who can change speeds and throws with timing and anticipation. Is accurate to all three levels of the field and boasts a quick, tight release and doesn’t need much of a wind up to get the ball down the field. Has worked hard to re-shape his body in the off-season and dropped about 20 pounds. Can still improve athletically and in his ability to extend plays and get outside the pocket but ins’t a bad athlete at all and does show good pocket presence and feel. The gene pool is strong in his family as well with three older sisters who played at the elite national level in water polo. He’s developing fast and shows the upside to be an upper tier Power 5 starter and future mid-high round NFL draft pick.”

Looks big in his HS highlight video, maybe he played in a weak league or something?

    Hats, no more hats.

I guess with the new early signing day, new culture, stable coaching, gone are the days of watching kids do hat swaps. No more bitter disappointments as kids flip to other teams after talking up osu for months.

  5. Supposedly there’s a potential late flip in OSU’s favor that could happen today, but how often do those things that get rumored actually happen?
Anybody done a count of the current signed players? Are they all in now?
I haven’t been following too closely this morning

  6. Also, somebody mentioned on the last thread that Big Jim sounded pretty optimistic that something good was happening today for OSU. I went and listened to the replay/podcast of that Joe Beaver show and agree, he almost hints at something happening in addition to the regular signings. And he made it sound like OSU fans will be very happy with today. So maybe more to come…

also, i have good feeling about DJU to OSU. Not sure when, but I think he’s the most likely of the QB transfers available to come here. I don’t trust the Hawaii crystal ball at all

  7. Just popped up as signed on the OSU website:
    Zachary Card – WR
    Nikko Taylor – DL

Leaving Hawaii player left to sign:
    Leonard Ah You – LB

Love how the 247sports commit board is 100% accurate when it comes to having them all sign during the early signing period and not waiting until February. Curious if there are any other flips or surprises that come the Beavs’ way like you stated NB. Would be nice to be on the receiving end of a surprise flip or surprise signing for a change.

  8. I thought I saw comments on here that DJ U’s family didn’t care for Oregon, yet I see that Oregon is in the running for younger bro’s commitment. Does not compute.

  9. Nikko Taylor sound pretty intriguing given his recent production in sacks and TFLs. If he can develop into a playmaker at this level, he’s going to free up other guys – Lolohea, Mathias Malaki-Donaldson, Chatfield(?), Hickle – even if he doesn’t get the sack. Or they’ll free up him.

Throw in the corner and safety blitzes and you’ve got a lot of fun…

Don’t forget about Sweden’s own Thomas Collins! He’s tall and has a big lean frame. He will be able to take Sandberg’s spot once he gets acclimated to the D-1 level. I’m really liking how the Beavs are recruiting. They are content with getting guys to come in tall and lean to add muscle onto their frames, but are still productive at their HS or JUCO level of play.

      • I thought he had about 14 TFLs to go with the 7.5 sacks. That’s pretty impressive.

I think they should lump TFL and sacks…I love seeing a runner get tackled behind the line as much as a QB, but I get the QB sacks are more often more dramatic for fans…

  10. Noting Abraham [JoJo] Johnson (DL), despite not having many offers, seems to have been very productive in high school.

Also of interest for me was that one of the staff who supposedly helped recruit him, Cole Moore, had been assistant director of player personnel at Texas before being hired by Oregon State to helm director of player personnel this year.

      • 2
        1

To me, there’s really only 2-3 months out of the year to have a membership from Blitz. December/January to February. Just for NLI Signing period, but the past 5-6 classes have not had surprise transfer/hype about players coming to OSU late. If this becomes normal in future classes, I may have to consider getting a membership to BeaverBlitz.com.

  11. 1
    3

Funny (but not really) how the Beavs always struggle to sign a big-time QB but the Ducks can manage to flip a 4* QB from Baylor in just 2 days once Dante Moore flipped earlier this week.

    • But the 4* QB wasn’t their first choice, so clearly they still had to recruit the 4* as the option if Donte Moore flipped last minute. So imagine how Baylor feels now.

  12. Usually at the end of all of OSU’s signings, Smith sends out a tweet welcoming everybody to the class.
But he hasn’t done that yet, so you have to think “we ain’t done yet”
At least not till that tweet comes out.

  13. If DJ wants to play at OSU you have to let him, of course, but what does that mean for Chiles? I wonder why he committed before figuring out what OSU plans to do on that front.

    • Chiles is a competitor and has been committed to Oregon State from the get go. He was not going to waiver on that one. Plus, as a Dual threat QB, having 2 highly capable QB’s will allow us to not have a drop off if the starter gets hurt.

    • I’m not a QB guru, I specialize in prevent defenses.

That said while Chiles has tons of potential he seems a bit raw based on film I’ve seen and DJ has two years remaining? Seems like chiles could redshirt and sit behind a senior QB for a year and still have 3 full season as the starter if he earns it.

Seems like no issue but who knows.

    • I think any HS QB who thinks they are going to come in to any program and contribute their first or even second year is delusional. I know it happens but not usually.
Maybe Chiles is one of the more reasonable ones.

    • 3
      1

What it means for Chiles is that he’ll have more competition here. If he transfers, he’ll still have competition where ever he goes. New QBs come in every year, what happens if the Beavs get a 5 star in the next cycle? It’s the life of QBs these days.

BTW – Chiles is not a savior of the program.

        • 2
          1

Oh I am, Chiles just oozes raw talent. My initial impression though is that he’s not anywhere near ready. Chiles has a chance to hit the stratosphere with his potential. QB development is key. I’m also a huge believer in not starting true freshman because only a special few can come and play at a high level.

      • Chiles is the start of getting top quality QB’s. The last 5 seasons everyone on this site has said, “Smith and Lindgren have not been able to recruit and land a high caliber QB.” Well, Chiles is that high caliber QB and now it sounds like we’re in the mix for a higher caliber transfer QB. If I were Chiles I would be happy to be the one to kickoff the ability to help the program get high caliber QB’s to come to Oregon State. Chiles will learn under BG and if it is DJ, then for sure a CFP caliber QB in DJ. This will elevate his game barring that DJ is transferring in and has a team first mentality with leadership like Gebbia.

        • Plus DJ was supposedly a classy mentor for the guy taking his job at Clemson. It would give Chiles someone to learn from (and DJ has learned a lot of lessons the hard way).

  14. Accidentally posted this above…

I’ve been intrigued by this Deacon Hill kid who’s from CA, 3* who originally committed to Wiscy, offers from K State and UCLA too, and is looking for a transfer opportunity. Seems like he might appreciate coming back west, getting a chance to compete, and would add depth to the QB position:

Looks big in his HS highlight video, maybe he played in a weak league or something?

  15. Momma Machado did tweet out an hour ago “We are still expecting a surprise today.” https://twitter.com/AngieMachado1/status/1605606722210594818?cxt=HHwWhIC85dKzocgsAAAA

She also just tweeted out in the paywall lodge something about the QB Transfer Portal. So I suspect it’s either DJ or Hudson Card, but might be Coastal Carolina’s QB? Who knows since I don’t pay for BeaverBlitz so I’ll be waiting like the rest of non paying beaver nation.

  16. Looks like a solid class. A bit off topic but still Beaver football and may have been brought up before but Teagan Quitoriano just started his 4th straight game for the Texans and caught his 2nd TD of the season last weekend. Not big numbers stat wise but you know it’s his blocking that has won him that spot. Congrats to him for all the hard work paying off.

  17. 29

Beautiful introduction from defensive lineman, Kelze Howard: What PAC 12 team are you most excited to play? Colorado, so I can sack Deion’s son.

  18. DJ Uiagalelei’s 2022 season highlights for anybody who wants to get a closer look.
Of course these are only the highlights and none of the botched plays. but those throws are so effortless and he can run.
Like having Derek Anderson’s arm on Jack Colletto.
Just a different level of athlete than we’re used to seeing at OSU.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdpwkOLsYio

  19. I watched the post bowl game press conference. Reporters asked JS how close this year’s team was to the Fiesta Bowl team. His non answer was basically no, the Fiesta Bowl team was better. Pretty funny

    • Hawaii has to be an exposure grab. Who else would the “Surprise” Transfer Portal be at this point? Why build it up if wasn’t going to be a big time player? Oregon doesn’t make sense because they have Bo Nix. Hawaii doesn’t make sense because they are terrible and lost to Vandy early in the season and are not relevant. The only logical landing spot is Oregon State, but wasn’t DJ and Matayo a package to be taken together? I’m so confused right now.

        • Not only get subscriptions, but I’m sure if those 3 colleges are in the mix, there is behind the scenes wheeling and dealing going on trying to get him to go to one of those universities. Who else would it be if it’s not DJ?

      • Matayo to Oregon worries me, but Nix coming back makes no sense for DJ to go there, unless Oregon offered a big NIL package deal offer? Hawaii makes no sense, I live in hawaii and the program is at an all time low I feel. Hawaii residents don’t even have much love for the program, I guess that’s what happens when you charge us $400 a season to watch the games on tv. All
Home games are blacked out here in hawaii and you need to pay to watch the games. No one wears hawaii gear here either. Facilities are terrible, no stadium. I can’t see it other than putting up video game numbers but no one can see.

My guess is that NikeU couldn’t stand the prospect of OSU having a run of CW win, Bowl win, and huge recruiting coup by signing both as a package. SO back up the brinks truck from Nike headquarters and dump a $5-$10 million each to flip them from Corvallis to Eugene. This is where OSU success in baseball forced them to spend an outrageous amount of money to create a baseball program and try to buy a national title to match what Casey did. Same mentality vs JS and what he is doing. Small minded hubris of a semipro university with no character or shame.

  20. 9

If DJU signs with Ducks watch Bo Nix enters the transfer portal next. LOL
Ducks are amazing at suckering 4* guys into wasted careers. Have they had any players excel recently or are they all disappointing. They just signed a class of 20 4* guys, and how many will be there in 2 years? It is the epitome of oversell and underdeliver. Quite a contrast to what JS is building and it is even sweeter to beat the crap out of them by running the ball for 2 solid quarters and watching them wilt under the beatdown.

Ducks have had and will have their moments but deep down they know that they got their successes by taking short cuts, and cheating and buying players when it was illegal, and even now dumping NIL money down the drain chasing these 4* guys who will leave as soon as they get challenged. NikeU is a fraud and it is a shame that so many kids are fooled by their hype machinery, and ESPN’s promotional materials.

  21. 5
    1

Colorado signed some serious talent. I don’t think Deion is a joke. He’s going to make Colorado competitive. And that’s good for the PAC12.

  22. Moment of reflection around family based recruiting. I am sure I missed one or two, but it seems like we have fairly mixed results. Hopefully the Beavs continue to improve so we have a better chance in the future to land highly ranked siblings and cousins.

Alex Austin-> Daylen Austin 5* Oregon
    Ron Hardge-> Isaiah Hardge Colorado
    I’Shawn Stewart -> I’marion Stewart 4*
Marco Brewer -> Demarcus Houston (cousins)
Isaiah Tufaga (former Beav) -> Mason Tufaga (potential portal)
Wright Bros-> Ryan Cooper, Alton Julian & Skyler Thomas (cousins)
    Victor Bolden -> Silas Bolden
    Akili Arnold —> Easton M-A
    Jeromy Reichner -> Omar Speights
    Jake Levengood -> Luke Levengood

  23. OT. Franco Harris passed away:

“His death comes two days before the 50th anniversary of the play that provided the jolt that helped transform the Steelers from also-rans into the NFL’s elite and three days before Pittsburgh is scheduled to retire his No. 32 during a ceremony at halftime of its game against the Las Vegas Raiders.”

  24. 2
    4

    Winners and losers in recruiting:

“Oregon – No program experienced the highs and lows of the recruiting season in the final week more than the Ducks. They appeared to have their quarterback of the future resolved when five-star Dante Moore committed this summer. The departure of offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham for the Arizona State job helped persuade Moore to join Pac-12 rival UCLA. Oregon moved quickly to add longtime Baylor quarterback commitment Austin Novosad from Texas on signing day. The Ducks then sprung two five-star surprises in a matter of minutes Wednesday by getting Notre Dame defensive back commitment Peyton Bowen to flip and successfully pulling defensive lineman Matayo Uiagalelei from finalists Ohio State and Southern California. There is some drama surrounding Bowen, who had yet to sign as of Wednesday evening.”

Doesn’t sound like they are buying players at all…

    • 2
      3

Poor Ducks had a roller coaster of expense accounts to get to the target of 20 4* kids to merit ESPNs attention. Why a bunch of slimy charades. It must be awful dealing with such hardships of figuring which kid to write the next check to. So sad for Coach Lanning to endure the travesty of kids flipping in the last week without asking giving Nike a chance to write another check.
ESPN tries to write that as if NikeU is the victim of unfortunate circumstances. I suspect there exists a “Nike bump” in recruit ratings so certain schools always look like they have recruited highly rated players.

  25. 4
    1

Are we still expecting a surprise by end of day?
And what does end of the day mean exactly?
And how many new subscriptions get refunded if that surprise never happens?

  26. DamNation and Learfield likely don’t have the resources to compete for some of these high demand transfers. Transfers to OSU can’t have short term financial gain as their primary driver, there has to be something else there.

  27. Angie told a twitter user the surprise hasnt happened yet. Supposed to be a transfer, but they havent announced anything yet.

But why would they? Its signing day for the 2023 class today. Transfers can have their spotlight any day they want, so why share it?

If it is DJU, my advice would be to follow Hayes Fawcett l. He often breaks announcements for the bigger names when they have him draw up “edits” for them. He broke the Matayo Uiagalelei news todays, so good chance he would also break any DJU news too.

  28. 3
    4

I have a longtime friend from Oklahoma and he is a huge Sooners fan. He has followed high level recruiting for nearly 30 years. Oklahoma is used to having Top 5-10 recruiting classes each year.

He had this to say about Peyton Bowen. “Every recruiting analyst had peyton bowen to OU. He never even visited Eugene. Started hearing last week oregon offered $2MM to Peyton Bowens. He never visited Oregon and his recruitments never had oregon until late last week. These so called “flips” are getting paid from big boosters.”

If Oregon is paying kids millions to sign this is how they’re getting 20+ four star players and multiple 5 star players to come to Eugene! There is nothing organic or authentic it is straight cA$h flow.

    • 3
      2

Even the crystal ball experts (Wiltfong and Huffman I think is was) were thrown off. They had expected him to go to Oklahoma as of December 16/17 and then he committed to the ducks. Still yet to sign his LOI unless I missed it. Maybe he wants to see Eugene first.

At some point do you become almost disgusted of your team if they are spending money like this or are you puffing your chest even though you had zero to do with it?

      • 5
        2

How long until some of these guys start bragging about how much they were paid though? NikeU will have a tremendous burden soon enough with bad public relations and increasingly held hostage by new recruits and their own roster. It will become a vicious cycle among the team based on greed and vanity.

  29. 11
    1

Beavs beat Denver, a team that lead the country in FG% going into this game in a super grindy fashion. Rochelin has been so massive since his return and good to see Krass stepping up when needed. Good win heading into conference play.

  30. So no big announcement by the end of the day. Granted, transfers don’t have to sign today.

I don’t think anyone should let the lack of transfer QB signing take the shine off the recruiting results, with a 4* QB commitment in Chiles. If no game-ready QB transfer comes in, today’s class will still represent the deliberate program progress we have been seeing.

If a “star” QB transfer can’t be convinced to play at OSU, then there’s still merit in seeking another transfer QB to add depth and competition.

  31. 7
    1

It is time for the NFL (and NBA) to have a minor league instead of having colleges do it for them (at tax payer expense). College baseball is an entirely different game because the option for minors. “Paying “college athletes is wrong.

    • 2
      3

Plenty of studies out there on instant gratification vs. patience for even bigger rewards. Check out the studies in kids who choose 1 piece of candy now vs. those who can wait just ten minutes. A big indicator of how the kid will make decisions later in life.

Some of these players would rather make $$$ now from Nike or the blue blood programs than going to the best place to develop, earn a degree, and increase their odds of playing in the NFL a few years down the road.

Who knows what ends up happening with DJU, but we can all assume they are offering big bucks to spite OSU.

  32. A few things being lost in the shuffle here:
-It makes no sense for DJU to go to Nike. Nix is coming back and it doesn’t make sense for Nike to bring someone else in, nor does it make sense for DJU to go somewhere he’s likely to be a backup. The only possible rationale would be DJU doesn’t think he’s going to make it to the NFL and he’s trying to get as much money as he can while he’s still a big name.

-There are a good number of highly touted past QB recruits in the portal. Even if we don’t get DJU, there are a ton of guys like Butterfield (referenced earlier) who have a lot of potential, but just got blocked at their current program. A miss on DJU isn’t a complete miss on bringing in a portal QB.

    • 4
      1

Yes, lots of QBs still out there. Hudson Card and McCall come to mind. McCall was supposedly a Florida lean, but they just signed Graham Mertz.

Doesn’t make sense for DJU to go to Nike, but crazier things have happened.

    • I believe DJU has his redshirt left. If that is the case then sitting a year while Nix plays then taking over for 2 years actually makes a lot of sense.

      • I believe he does and that’s the only thing that worries me. If he has recognized he could use it/been convinced to sit a year to improve. And then still have two years to play with his brother who either redshirted or has a year of experience.

        • 3
          2

DJU is a duck. He’ll get paid and redshirt to work on fundamentals and then take over for Nix after next year… makes a lot of sense. Beavs aren’t going to have the money to compete

          • I don’t like it, but that is what my beaver fan instincts are telling me.

As mentioned by others above, I don’t think that is a terrible thing, lot of other guys out there that would be interesting, just don’t think its DJU

      • I didn’t realize he had a redshirt left. If he’s willing to sit a year then that makes sense. He would need to have faith in the QB coach and new OC to develop him.

If DJU goes to NikeU, you have to imagine that Ty Thompson will be entering the portal.

        • But if he burns his RS to sit and wait, goes out the next season, starts, and has a season-ending injury, he’s screwed, right? Or is there an additional medical redshirt year?

          • What if Nix gets hurt next year? DJU would be able to play 4 games and still RS. Plus, players don’t factor in injuries and use RS as insurance policy. Next year he’ll still be able to play 4 games if necessary and the the following year he’ll hope to blow up and get drafted. The goal is NFL within next 2 years. I’m guessing he’s not planning to stick around for 3. The assumption is that Beavs get a QB in portal but I’d bet they aren’t able to get one… not enough NIL capital

        • 4
          2

Hole’s new OC was coaching high school 3 years ago. Gonna go out on a limb and say he’s never put anyone in the NFL.

I can see DJU not coming to Oregon State but going to hole for “development” makes no sense.

  33. 5
    2

I wonder how close DJU was to signing with Beavs. It could’ve been a long play ruse for NikeU $$.

JS has to stay the course with guys who have integrity about themselves and their motives must be team oriented before personal gain.

Perhaps those guys will be more difficult to find but NIL is a distraction that will certainly fracture locker rooms. If DJU goes to Ducks and is a repeat of JT Daniel last year, Beavs will be spared again by having some firm principles about NIL twice.

NIL should be a reward for players excelling IN your program, not a pay to play recruiting slush fund to get players on your team.

Given the amount of coaches following DJU he must’ve been the main target but I’m hopeful that the staff has Card as the plan B with good news and a guy with less drama. Just get another qb with experience on the roster.

Lanning will be overwhelmed with the drama they have just purchased. We will get to the end of next season and the Ducks still won’t learn they can’t buy a national championship.

    • “Lanning will be overwhelmed with the drama they have just purchased.”

Olive Headline is “Dan Lanning, Oregon Ducks flip their way to top 10 recruiting class in most dramatic signing day in program history.”

Headline for Beavers: “Oregon State’s recruiting strategy of school, football and NFL draft works as Beavers ink solid 2023 class”

    • 8
      2

It’s going to be objectively hilarious when Duck fans have a complete meltdown when the Beavs go into Autzen next November and run for 300 yards and win

  34. 6
    1

Bill said above “Chiles is not a savior of the program”. Sure, but a 10-3 team doesn’t need a savior. We just need a guy who can manage the offense, take care of the ball, and deliver it to our playmakers. A guy who can do that will push this team to the next level. No one knows that better than JS, so it doesn’t surprise me that he’s not too concerned about signing a superstar QB.

    • 3
      1

If you want better than 12-1 team, you’ll need more than a game manager.

My argument is more that, the program shouldn’t settle for Chiles and GB. Chiles reputation has taken off this year, he’s a legit 4 star talent with 5 star potential. But that shouldn’t stop the team from adding a Hudson Card or DJU if they have the chance. If the worst QB in the room is GB, the floor is sky high.

Just noticed in SEA Times that a 4* CB from Rainier Beach in WA flipped from Ducks to Huskies the other day…maybe UO is having a little trouble affording all of these players?

    • 4
      1

Toilet seats have about as close to an unlimited recruiting budget as it gets.

They flipped Daylen Austin from LSU, which offset the loss of the CB to UW.

      • Yeah, in their mind they can just go get “better” players now that the Nike recruiting NIL is open for business.

All programs affected by them should publicize the $$ amounts tossed around by the players and NikeU, although they have no shame anyway.

I admit if I were a duck fan, it would all be unbelievably exciting to see that list of 4* & 5* players, but there will be repercussions to this spending spree that they are obviously on this year.

Perhaps the Civil War beat down is fueling the desperation to create a new storyline for media regarding NikeU propaganda.

        • 1
          2

Exactly: Civil War beat down. My paranoia tells me Phil Knight is still seething. Would ucks have gone after this particular qb if the Beavs hadn’t wanted him?

  36. Here’s who could come back apparently:

“…getting final decisions on those deciding on the NFL draft or ending their college careers. Among those with decisions are defensive end Isaac Hodgins, cornerback Alex Austin, linebacker Omar Speights, safety Kitan Oladapo and Fenwick.”

I’d like to see Austin and Oladapo return at least. OSU could once again have the best secondary in the PAC. I think Austin need to be more consistent, though listed at 6’1″ 191 an NFL team might draft him for his potential.

  37. I realize NikeU will have some of the best tax attorneys in the business, but how do schools, and/or their collectives, report expenditures for their “employees,” and how do players report taxable income? I’m sure there’s a complete service offered for the student at the richer schools, from NIL payment to filing taxes.

But it seems like there should be a way to see what is being paid and claimed through tax filings.

    • It will all likely be 1099 like a hired contractor for the payers and they will need to pay taxes on it. The players can’t be classified as employees, but will have to declare the money as income.
No doubt the books will be clean for any of their collectives and boosters, who understand how to move large sums of money without incurring additional taxes.

    • This would be a great assignment for an investigative reporter. Do a deep dive on taxes and other information you can get via the freedom of information act. The players and their family members will need to pay taxes on this income one way or another.

It would be interesting to see how much money is being paid out per player per these blue blood programs such as Ohio State, Alabama, USC, toilet seats, etc.

        • Players are required to report their NIL deals to their schools though. so this information is known by the public institution. But you know they will do everything possible to prevent having to release this information via records requests.

          • Kind of what I was thinking, There has to be some oversight when a public institution is involved. Ultimately, it’s not super relevant. Rich schools are going to spend more and poor schools, and that’s just the way it is. Still, it would be insightful to see what the NIL funding is looking like on a per player per school basis.

      • In two years we’ll be reading articles about how 18 year olds aren’t responsible when given $2 million.
A big house, a Hellcat and a bunch of blow. What could go wrong?

        2

“It would be interesting to see how much money is being paid out per player per these blue blood programs such as Ohio State, Alabama, USC, toilet seats, etc.”

While it would be interesting to see the numbers, I take umbrage with using “blue blood programs” and the program at hole in the same sentence.

        • I’m not even sure what a “blue blood program” is to be honest. I know that for decades, many of the most highly regarded programs have been violating recruiting rules and paying players. The status of many of those programs was not achieved with integrity, nor has Oregon achieved its status with integrity. I remember an S-I article admonishing Chip Kelly “Always pay cash!” never pays in ways that can be tracked.

Now collectives and programs will find ways to hide payments and reduce or dodge taxes…

  38. I’m surprised we haven’t had some news on the recruiting front outside of the known commodities. I was on a plane back and sat next to a family member of someone on the staff. They were saying the staff did fly home Wednesday to meet with a recruit and also that as soon as the game ended flew home to host another player saturday night/sunday.

I would have thought right before signing day like that we would get some info-I have no idea who they were just that it happened. No news from any source on who these players were either to my knowledge-typically you can see official visits etc.. and it’s pretty broadly known

      • I think I remember reading something from JS that said something to the effect of “we put a lot of effort into recruiting our own guys.” Basically the effort doesn’t change once guys commit.

    • I was told they visited with Card and DJU both during the bowl week period. and then another story came out saying Slovis had plans to visit with OSU but I haven’t heard any more about that one.

  39. Guess there will be more qb’s in portal after bowl games, might have to wait. Bachmeier was a hell of a qb, don’t know what happened to him.

  40. NIL will be interesting for the next couple years. Combined with the transfer portal, it’ll be chaos for a bit while companies and collectives figure out how to best invest the money. Right now they are just throwing dollars at players. But look at T&M and Oregon. Throw money at players to come but when things don’t work out on the field and they want to transfer, that investment was a total waste. Companies will be smarter because they aren’t in it to help the school.

We should see a bit more measured NIL deals in the future.

  41. New Dam Right from Smith. don’t think it’s QB related though. Decent chance it’s the transfer DE from Wyoming, but we’ll see soon enough.

  42. 5

Hopefully JS works on getting a few more transfers for the Dline. Beavs only had 20 sacks on the year and that’s counting 4 in the bowl game. Ranked #110 in the country. Would be near dead last without those. 6.5 of the sacks came from DBs.

  43. This has been mentioned many of times, but kudos again to JS and the culture created in the program. The Beavs must have the fewest transfer portal players in the nation. Our bowl game is done and every day that passes is enormous in terms of opportunity for any player co soldering transferring. So I believe we’ve already passed that point where we see a lot of players opting to transfer. Maybe we see 1-2 more at most and if anything that would be because of transfers coming in?

    • JS said he’s yet to meet with players to go over their future plans since most went home for xmas break. We should see a few transfers in early Jan.

A couple positions are pretty ripe for transfers.
      – RB could see one. 4 very capable RBs and only one ball. Likely depends on if Fenwick decides to return.
      – OL room is crowded with Gray announcing his return and a new transfer coming in. Miller and Morano might get squeezed out and there are some promising young guys in there who might just want to play.

They might wait until after spring ball though to see if they can win a starting job

      • The Southern Miss QB? He was the starter in the bowl game. I was making a joke with Ohio Beav last Saturday about how Trey was playing in two games on the same day.

In all seriousness, our Trey Lowe was such an asset the previous season. I hope he comes back at full strength next year and gets snaps.

Unfortunate that the corner that flipped from ND to Oregon is now flipped to Oklahoma. Lol. Apparently they could offer more than the rumored $2 mill the Ducks gave. It’s funny, people getting praised for their good “recruiting” when in fact, it’s more like “hey, how much did you get from so and so, cool, how does $500k more sound?”.

  46. Just looking at the transfer portal list of qbs still available and it looks like the top 5-6 are all players chicken and once one of them signs the rest may domino quickly.
DJU career 59% comp, 36 TD /16 int. 34 games
    Armstrong career 60% comp, 58 TD/35 int. 38 games
    Card career 65% comp, 11 TD/2 int. (14 games)
    McCall career 71% comp, 60 TD/7 int. !!! 27 games
    Sanders career 60% comp, 59 TD/40 int 40 games

Top 5 based on actual productivity/ranking

Next 5 based on having starting experience at P5 level and likelihood Beavs can get one without a lot of NIL and fanfare:

Slovis career 65% comp, 63 tds /33 int
    Bachmeier career 62% comp, 41 TD/17 int
    Brendan Lewis career 58% comp, 10 TD/3int 14 games
Donovan Smith (Texas Tech) career 65% comp, 18 TD/10 int 20 games
Chandler Rogers (ULM) career 65% comp, 24 TD/10 ints 24 games

Deacon Hill. ( west coast guy from Wisconsin, no career stats at Wisconsin)

Of all these guys, which there are now only
15 qbs left in the portal, but based on stats alone:
    1) McCall would be the steal of the group if he could learn the offense and play at the same caliber as he has through 3 seasons. He likely has 2 seasons to go. 2)Card has a lot of upside potential, and good stat line for a 1st year starter due to injury.
    3) DJU stats look good and may benefit from a change of scenery and stability in coaching staff.
    4) Armstrong may be a liability and a lot of ints with poor comp %. Probably stays Midwest/ east coast, from Ohio anyway.
5)Sanders numbers are startlingly bad for a guy we saw as a freshmen and in the OkSt offense. Lots of ints and he likely falls into run first if things breakdown on reading defenses.
    6) Slovis may benefit from new scenery but his numbers are progressively worse each year through his career in every category. He peaked as a freshmen at USC but may be a humble teammate with lots of game experience.
    7) Bachmeier has a terrible stat line for his career and never is above 63% comp. Lots of sacks and ints but is also a seasoned starter who may be humbled as a teammate.
    8) Lewis has very little experience but has a lot of upside and would be at least an experienced backup if BG maintains the starting qb. Decent TD/int.
    9) Rogers has an interesting stat line but may not pan out in bigger school setting. Not sure on him.
10)Smith started 2 years at TT and was fairly productive.

I’m hoping they are talking to McCall at
    This point.

    • My pecking order is pretty much exactly like yours. Agree, McCall would be great. Just haven’t seen evidence that OSU has reached out to him even.

Thanks for all the extra info/stats

    • Beavs struggles in the passing game vs winning record/ranked teams was the most glaring weakness. Some of these guys have terrible stats against the same. Based on that, take DJU, McCall, Bachmeier: who performed fairly well last season against 10 teams with winning records. Maybe Lewis, smith, Rogers, Hill as more unknown commodities.

  47. Thanks for all the work on this! Good job. McCall for sure stands out as the most productive and least interception prone. Sanders, Armstrong, and Slovis are 3 to stay away from. Slovis because he has not gotten any better and the other 2 throw way too many picks. Thanks again.

Grayson just seems to consistently make good decisions on where and when to throw, plus he’s mobile. He’s 3X Sun Belt player of the year, first time ever in that conference someone won it 3 years straight. I think he wants to move up after dominating in that conference. The easy call is following his coach to Liberty, but he hasn’t done that. He doesn’t seem to be clamoring for attention, and it makes him seem like a good prospective fit at OSU

Paired with a great run game and a solid offensive line, he wouldn’t have to win games by himself, but there would be times where he could be the difference maker. OSU and the PAC should get better TV exposure next year given the ranking and the conference’s strength of about 6 teams in the top 20. He’d also be running an offense to better prepare for the next level.

I suspect he’ll stay East or SE, but I really wish Smith would reach out to him and have him look at what he could do at OSU in the next year or two, It could be a great bridge for Chiles.

Nobody’s asking me but I’d say there are better stocks to invest in right now. Keep a close eye on Tesla over the next 3-4 years. Eventually it comes back strong but agree with Angry that it’s not a great short term investment with regards to returns… but I think it’s a safe bet. My 18 year old is looking to invest $1K to sit for the next 5 years. I told him if he kept in for 10 years, Tesla would be a great buy. My short term tip right now would be Jacobs Engineering Group (J). Substantial federal infrastructure funds are just beginning to hit the market and Jacobs is well positioned for the next 5+ years.

  48. I am helpless in the gif game. Can someone help me with a gif link of No nix being a dousche after beavers sacked him in the civil war?

My buddy saying penix is a dousche but he’s a duck fan, it just isn’t right I gotta explain to him, but he’s a duck fan and that just seems like the only way he might understand

Nope, BUT I did read a couple of good articles about Dan Lanning the other day (including about how his wife battled cancer a few years back when Dan was a Memphis assistant) and I have to admit I kinda like the guy now.

          • 18
            2

I don’t dislike the guy. Heck, i thought the way he finished the Civil War game was fantastic and hope to see more of that.
But the cocky cigar smoking video after Phil paid for every star possible rubs me the wrong way.

          • 1
            1

Only three more years or less before he’s poached away and onto the next guy. Kelly was 4 years, Helfrich was 4 years, Cristobal was 4 years and Taggart for the one. It’s pretty clear other than Helfrich that the Oregon job is a stepping stone for everyone else. Can really get a lot of $ out of Oregon.

          • 2
            1

Yup. The staff changes that follow HC moves add to the mix as well; this new OC just another example.
As discussed before, staff turnover and a team of prima donna’s are all part of Phil’s desperation to win at all costs.
A lot easier to cut the rice ration of 8 year old kids in Pakistan or VN in pursuit of another of his goals.

          • Cristobal was four years?
I live here with Duck fans, and I could have sworn he was only two years, after the wholly wise decision to hire the Willie.
I personally like Lanning. He’s the first non-sketch coach since Belotti, and even Belotti has his sketch stuff–PERS.

          • 18
            1

I agree with this. The cigar video focusing on himself as the benefactor of an endless cash flow was a stark contrast to Smith’s tweet welcoming the new recruits to the Beaver family. I hope the major cultural differences between two programs remain for years to come because I definitely prefer the Beav’s culture.

          • 7
            2

If the top recruiting programs can find coaches that can coach, then they have something but just using whoever it is to stand in as the “coach” while the boosters buy players, underachieve, rinse, and repeat it really doesn’t matter.

Cant be considered official till he attends a class next term. Wish it wasnt so far off. Everybody will be waiting for reports that he actually reported to class that Monday.

Do we need a new thread to start speculating which other roster moves will happen next?
Wonder if this news impacts some of the defensive guys and their draft bs stay decision?
        Unfinished business?

        4

As any good Beaver fan knows, this is when Lucy is setting the ball on the tee and we must now be guarding against the inevitable slight of hand.

DJ U may be the difference maker and I hope all of the drama surrounding his brother to Ducks doesn’t become the narrative of the off-season for Beavers. If he arrives he must win the job, not have it gifted to him.

Actually not holding my breath at this point that he signs with Beavs.

  49. 11
    1

DJ Uiagalelei is gonna be so much better than many people realize in Oregon State’s offense. Clemson’s offensive coaching staff did him no favors while with JS and BL he’s gonna get a lot of easy throws that he wasn’t getting that much at Clemson while playing behind a really good o-line and a great running game. When you watch him he can make throws that Nolan and Gulbranson simply didn’t have the ability to make. Combine that with his ability to be a threat running and this seems like a perfect fit. Not completely official yet but fans should be extremely excited about this team next season.

  50. 2
    1

As a fan, I’m stoked for this. Like LFG said, his arm and running abilities will be game changers. Doesn’t need to sling it 40x for us to win as he should have lots of easy throws. What concerns me is the team chemistry as OSU hasn’t brought in a highly visible transfer before. Hoping he isn’t handed the keys just because he chose OSU.

    • 7
      1

It’s going to be a weird scenario for BG. I don’t see him staying if this happens. DJ for two years and then Chiles taking over. BG is the odd man out with lots of eligibility. He’ll go start for a group of six program. This is not a Gebbia situation.

      • 3
        1

Why? DJ is just competition at this point. He got benched twice this year. BG has three years left. He can stick around for at least one or at least try to compete in camp.

DJ represents a lot of positives for OSU, but no one should assume he’s a lock to start.

      • I think Gulbranson will stay. If he leaves, it will be to go to med school. Besides Chiles will more than likely redshirt, which he
should . I’m looking forward to seen BG and DJ as I think the competition will make both better. I’m just glad that the Beavs have 3 solid QBs and possibly a 4th with Throckmorton.

  51. 12

I actual think his brother choosing Oregon help him choosing OSU. Once Bo returned Oregon didn’t need a QB, this is an opportunity for the brothers to be close and have an Opportunity for DJ to start. If Bo wasn’t coming back, I’d feel differently.

  52. If true, it raises the floor of the QB room which is a very good thing. Looks like multiple reporters are confirming on twitter.

At a minimum, there is a wildcat QB ready to go next year. Adding stiff competition is a good thing.

  53. 15
    2

    What’s up y’all!! It’s a potentially great day to be a Beav!

One key super dope aspect about this is the connection for DJ and Aidan.

    1. Downey and Bosco are like 7 minutes apart from each other. They should bond quickly over this.

    2. DJ and Aidan will likely be almost identical in stature once coach Mac gets his hands on Aidan for a bit 6’4 230 – 245 range with dual threat skills and cannon arms

    3. The Packages and installs that BL and Niner put in place for DJ will work just as well for Aidan when he is ready. So Aidan literally gets to apprentice under a more mature version of himself for the next season +

We essentially get a ready made prototype version of our future stud QB. The alignment and continuity couldn’t be any better.

    • To be fair, Bahns did give Thamel a mention in the 24/7 piece:
“ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Friday night that the highly sought after signal caller is expected to commit to Oregon State, and BeaverBlitz confirmed with sources shortly thereafter that his transfer is a “done deal.””

  54. Does anyone know definitively how many years DJ has left? ESPN is saying three years of eligibility but others are saying two. I’d think two is the right answer. He played behind Trevor Lawrence in 2020 (playing in 10 games according to his Clemson bio) and then started in 2021 and 2022.

    • FWIW, from 24/7:
Having played as a true freshman in 2020, maintaining his redshirt year and gaining an extra year of eligibility, Uiagalelei will have three years to play two when he arrives at Oregon State.

    • I thought the Covid year gives him 3 and a redshirt still possible. But he may go early to NFL if there is great success and he excels in this system. We may legitimately have a Heisman candidate if he limits turnovers and Beavs continue to win. His physical tools are there, just needs to fix his confidence and be in a spot where he doesn’t have to do everything.

At Clemson, he had 2 OCs in 3 years, lots of Oline injuries this year, and Shipley wasn’t as good as the Beavs running game will be around him. JS has his chance to be the qb whisperer, I’m hoping we see some of the productivity that JS & Browning had at UW.

Biggest concern is how the locker room responds to the news. There has to be a real competition so they see him winning the role. If Gebbia is a grad assistant and holds BG in the qb room and brings unity it will be a great ride for the next few years.

  55. DJ’s going to be really good at handing the ball off to Martinez lol

In all seriousness, his greatest asset is his ability to buy time with his feet and throw deep. This is going to help our receivers a ton.

  56. Thamel also mentioned all of the O-Line starters return next year.
Is that even possible? Does Kipper have an extra year to use potentially, or is he 100% gone?

    • Technically they do have 5 o-line starters coming back. Brewer and Miller are coming back and they played significant snaps with Brewer having a couple starts and Miller getting one too.

Add in the transfer and the oline is very deep.

  57. Still have the ROSE BOWL in play for this season before the playoff in 2024. Why shouldn’t people care about it? When was the last time OSU made it to the RB? Why not make it to the last one before it gets sucked into the rotation for the CFP? ROSE BOWL means something.

  58. McCartan seems sure DJ is coming, tweets pic of himself and DJ with this:
From competing against each other in High School to teammates now… whatchu think ?? ?

  59. QB sitch in a quick summary:
BG is golden. Dude needs to be captain from here on out. He reminds me of Matt Moore with a little more head.
DJU is obviously big. His upside doesn’t even need to be realized for OSU to succeed beyond this season. Maybe someone like Niner can realize some of his upside?
CHiles is coming into a prime situation. Develop for a couple years, and who knows what kind of QB celebrations he’ll be following. If just BG was the QB expectation for next year, I see upside in Chiles’ development.
Then again, I love Dom Montiel’s upside more than even Dom loves it. He’s an NFL player if he wants… and he could do it at QB, as well.

  60. 7
    5

Nervous until it’s official but if DJU is a Beav, next year could be the year. If we can get everyone back, natty is legit possibility. Say 10%. Odds will be 200:1 so I’ll be dropping a hundy

    • Williams at usc gonna be tough. Rising back at Utah, penix at uw and nix and Oregon.

Bonus is uw and Utah is at home. Ucla also home. Road game against Oregon will be tough

Beavs miss usc unless we meet in oac12 champ which I hope happens

    • Should sweep non-con, no USC, while biggest challenges of UW, UCLA, Utah (no Rising?) at home with Reser loud, @ UO….could be 10 wins before bowl game….

Some of those guys that CAN leave might stick around for another special season, a uniquely (for OSU) loud homefield experience, and better bowl game.

      • It is tough to say favorite with the back to back champ bringing back the qb and I don’t know a ton about them but guessing a lot of players will be back.

You gotta think Beavs win the 3 “big” home games though, I’d think 9-3 before bowl game is about worse case scenario

        • 1
          1

Utah signed a top 25 class for the first time ever, and many of their stars were injured for most of the year. They’re clearly the favorite to win the conference.

          • Utah needs to replace Rising and their two best TEs. The new QB will either be Barnes who is a walk on this year or another guy with limited experience.

Good thing the Beavs get them at home next year. Hopefully early in the year before the QB get settled.

          • After watching Utah outscore USC 44-7 over the last 34 minutes of the conference championship game I don’t see anyone besides OSU or UCLA capable of beating Utah next year. USC, Oregon, and UW all wear down in the second half against teams that run the ball.

They have the best coaching staff in the conference, the most physical lines, and a running back group that is just as good as ours.

  61. Beavs will never be favored to win the conference but they will have a legitimate shot to win the conference with a qb playing at the level of the top half of conference qbs and the same effective defense.

Need a punter, kicker and big wide receiver, but Speed at wr will be utilized finally as DJ can throw a beautiful deep ball anywhere on the field.

  62. Funny to see DJU drop from #2 highest rated qb in the portal before anything is linked to Beavs and then he drops to #6 within a couple of hours. Classic Beaver downgrade. The guy was a 5* out of high school…

      • 2
        3

Oh it is the real Jack. Welcome back Jack. Your absence was noticeable.
To answer, not really, just observing typical sequences of Beaver players knocked down and commonly NikeU players elevated in rankings. The perception of great roster leads to preseason ranking which leads to top 25 TV games which leads to better program exposure and when the beauty contest begins the roster perception is the first argument talking heads bring up. I point it out as a footnote for OSUs roster perception may not be very accurate based on performance.

  63. Watching highlights, hot damn he throws a beautiful deep ball. It’s been a long time since we had somebody who could throw it like that.

    • Did you watch the lowlights though?

Clemson fans are happy to see him go, as they hang all 5 of their losses the last 2 seasons on his inconsistency in being able to manage the game and not turn the ball over. It’s a fair criticism, he got benched for Klubnik after going 8/29 in a ugly loss to SC. He’s put up a buncha highlights but also laid some eggs and hurt them in their biggest games.

He doesn’t always look very well coached or held accountable on film either, so those issues could be as much on Clemson and the staff as they are on him. His mechanics are all over the place a lot of the time, even on highlight plays. He’s been able to get away with that cause he’s such a freak talent. He won’t be able to if he ever wants to play and stay in the NFL.

Not trying to be a downer, it’s an awesome win for the program to land him, but buy-in to culture and coaching will be the determining factor in his success in Corvallis. Otherwise we’ll see a human highlight reel that throws the big games away with an ugly stat line.

I do have a lot of faith given what they’ve done with so little at the QB position thus far. Luton’s transformation in particular bodes well.

      • Not sure how one evaluates, on film, the “held accountable” factor. Sure was held accountable when benched.
Anyway, if JS can’t help him elevate then I doubt any college coach can. Not necessarily mechanics but over all mindset.

I think you’ve got the key in saying, “buy-in to culture and coaching will be the determining factor in his success in Corvallis…”

  64. Bowls are superficially meaningless, but I can’t help but think a strong showing by the PAC will help with preseason rankings next year. The conference will be legitimately strong with all the talent coming back and it performed well this year against other conferences, which has been the knock against it in recent years.

  65. The national narrative will be how DJU was disappointing at Clemson, but his PFF rating would have made him the 4th best PAC QB this season (ahead of Rising).

    • DJU was fine but Clemson had different coordinators almost every year. I don’t blame him for leaving as it is tough getting used to a new coaching staff every year. I’m just glad OSU is building on culture and development. Smith is competitive much like Erickson was but he has the attention to detail and philosophy of establishing culture and development to build a program much like Chris Petersen.

  66. 5
    1

I just saw the news on ESPN. This is a very good get for a couple of reasons:

    1) The QB position just became stronger and I think by adding DJU, it’ll make BG and Chiles better.

    2) QB position is the strongest it’s been in a long time at least since Mannion and Vaz were here.

    3) DJU finally has some continuity in the coaches because Clemson had some coaching turnover the last few seasons. Unless Lindgren becomes a HC, I don’t see him going anywhere and I see Smith being here for the long haul.

    4) something tells me that if things don’t work out for the brother at Oregon that we may see him in orange and black. I was a little surprised to see him choose Oregon as I thought he’d go to USC.

After the messes that Riley and Andersen left OSU in, I’m glad to see signs that the Beavers are headed in the right direction with Smith.

    • Looks like Santa is going to deliver this year! I haven’t looked at season tickets in years, but may have to investigate getting a pair and if I don’t have to take out a second mortgage, I may dive in. This would really put the Beavs on the map for sure!

    • “4) something tells me that if things don’t work out for the brother at Oregon that we may see him in orange and black. I was a little surprised to see him choose Oregon as I thought he’d go to USC.”

On DJ’s tweet, he alluded that Oregon was his brother’s dream school since little.

        • Especially if Lanning can’t coach him up. I could see Oregon ending up like Texas A&M where they get a bunch of talent but wind up not being able to win consistently. It’s going to be hard to control all those 5-star egos and have to deal with an angry Uncle Phil if things don’t pan out. I give Lanning 3 more years before they can him or he bails.

          • Back in the Jackie Sherrill days, eaTme was a perennial #3 in the preseason rankings, and I think they landed in the top 20 once, at the end of the year.

I’m hoping this is true, but given all the NIL craziness, it seems wise to wait until he’s signed and enrolled at OSU. That said:

Is this an example of the Learfield connection in NIL collectives, or is he primarily interested in the OSU record, roster, and great opportunity it presents? I noted in an article the other day there was a mention of Learfield and NIL for a transfer there.

Watching his highlights, he is obviously very exciting. Looks comfortable in the pocket (so used to happy feet back there at OSU), can sense pressure, move and extend plays, obviously run, great arm and capable of touch.

He and the OSU D could make it each other better. The secondary, particularly if Austin and Oladapo return, will be a great one for him to face in practice, and the OSU D line will have to deal with a mobile guy and hopefully it will help the D get more sacks next year.

DJ and BG have both already graduated. If BG stays (which would not surprise me), then DJ ought to really push him BG. I expect one of the backups to leave. Throckmorton?

As much as the team is behind BG, the WR and TEs have to be excited and likely motivated to work extra hard this off season. I think the Beavers have scholarship room I wonder if they can pull in a transfer WR or two with height? Or maybe Dunmore or Tongue start to show more.

DJ with Martinez/Jam/Newell and maybe Fenwick. With that lineup, this team could be putting up 40 ppg.

After the season, there were multiple reports from even popular media that this program was on an upward trajectory and capable of more. I think it was Fisher-Morris who said pre-season the team wanted to “change the narrative,” an they certainly are.

  68. Articles I located indicated Rising participated in “senior night” and did not intend to return next season. HC Wittingham is comfortable with for 4* backup Johnson, says he is “lightening quick” and “could probably play RB if that was his desire.”

The PAC could be pretty loaded at QB next season. By the end of this bowl season the PAC would have Utah, USC, UW, OSU, UO, and UCLA in the top 25, and most of those in the ’23 preseason poll. All of this could add up to better TV opportunities.

    • Johnson runs a 4.4. I think that was the guy who was high on the Beavs until Michigan came calling, then he recommitted and ended up at Utah.

  69. shout out to Chris for calling it, and thanks info. who else is actually excited to go to the spring game?
    And where’s WB? Yacht doesn’t have wi-fi?

    • Watched the Emergency Dam Podcast last night. Carter mentions this caught everybody off guard and nobody was expecting this.

      Say what?
      He should read AB.

      In Dec 20th(prior thread)
“I dont think this Hawaii crystal ball thing has any legs. Just a reporter trying to draw some eyeballs.
My uninformed gut thinks OSU is the clubhouse favorite for DJU”

On Dec 21st in this thread:
“also, i have good feeling about DJU to OSU. Not sure when, but I think he’s the most likely of the QB transfers available to come here. I don’t trust the Hawaii crystal ball at all”

      • I’ve been telling my buddies we were gonna get him for a few weeks now…. I mean we were in the final 3 and Hawaii and Oregon didn’t make sense.

    • In the twitter feed there was a short video of guy (Max Browne?) recommending DJ go to OSU because of the great defense, Martinez, remodeled stadium in ’23, and quarterback friendly coach. Think it was posted December 15th.

    • I don’t know about the spring game, but the home slate of PAC games is looking great right now, probably one of the best home slates in years given the QB talent that could be there.

I’m not surprised at Smtih’s progress over the past 5 years. I am pleasantly surprised the stadium remodel is coming along at almost the perfect time and converging well with roster development and fan interest. I say “almost,” because if it were done this year, it would have been even better.

  70. Will DJ and Chiles both be on campus for next term and at spring ball? I hope BG takes a page from Gebbia and does all he can to help both guys understand the playbook asap. The wide receivers and TEs should be working with DJ on routes at Truax daily for the next 6 months.

My goodness what an opportunity for OSU going into next year. DJ makes the offense instantly 30-40 pts per game possible again.

If he can see the pre snap as good as Gebbia/BG did then the running game will excel and play action out of it will be devastating. Fond memories of DA throwing the deep ball to Haas over and over.

Given the health of the locker room and the tight knit group in place, DJ just needs to be a part of it and not come in like a prima donna. I think a lot rides on Gebbia being a GA and bringing the qb room together around a common goal of team championships.

I expect Oladapo, Austin and Speights to return after this news. The defense must know how close to great things they are with a slightly improved offense, and this may portend to a dramatically improved offense.

Atmosphere should be insane at Reser next year when it opens for this team.

    • Chiles has graduated and will enroll early along with a few of the WR commits. I think Howard will as well but not 100% sure.

Was thinking the same thing about Oladapo, Austin, and Speights. Read an article where Speights said he was 50/50. Have to imagine this changes things.

Have also read articles about DJ and how he’s solid person and good teammate. Didn’t pout when he was benched and stayed engaged, helping out his teammates from the sidelines. He was a captain and we’ll respected. I think he’ll fit in well at OSU.

    • Maybe BG thinks his future as a surgeon is brighter than football, and won’t mind bubble wrapping his head for a few seasons, presuming DJ wins the job.

  71. Disappointed Terry Boss is leaving the soccer program – anyone know where he’s heading? It’s a pro job for sure, but I have to think MLS – not sure NWSL pays as much as a Pac-12 gig. But I could be wrong.

Minor quibble with the Reser renovation – no Christmas tree on the top as most construction projects do this time of year.

  72. Looking at the Beavs schedule next year, I see 9 wins plus whatever they do against Utah, UW and UO. With UW and Utah at home, could be undefeated heading into CW. A lot depends on who comes back and staying healthy. Good luck stopping this team on short yardage

    • Damn, there are a lot of vicious comments out there from Clemson fans. Summed up as DJ’s play was holding back the team, don’t let the door hit you in the ass. Of course, the expectation is playoffs/national championship every year.

      • When do classes start? DJ could just make an announcement and put all rumors to rest right?
This was my concern earlier, he wavers and it is a ploy for other suitors if he isn’t solid with JS philosophy and wants to be part of it no matter the noise and chatter.

    • That’s what I’m afraid of. Until it’s official I’m nervous. Would be a huge letdown if he doesn’t end up a Beav. I could see Ducks getting some NIL cash together and pulling the rug out.

      • He started following the HawaiiFootball account this morning, btw. Haha

It is weird that even after the Pete Thamel story and subsequent confirmation with “sources” by 247 and On3, that no crystal balls for OSU have been submitted. Would seem like a layup for the people who do those things

  73. 5
    1

Cool of Smith to acknowledge OSU men’s soccer coach Boss.

I don’t know if college soccer will catch on (seems unlikely given youth ability to go pro?) but i hope OSU Men’s soccer can keep their momentum going.

  74. There used to be a way to check the student directory and see who was enrolled, I forgot how to do it.

I’m trying not to get my hopes up after what happened with that douchebag USC transfer that committed to us then flipped to the ducks minutes later.

    • Closed it to public view but we do have a student on board. He checked the directory the other day and no DJ, but it may be time for another look.

      • 4
        10

Nice. I’m watching his film…very flashy and arrogant. Rubs TDs in the opponents’ face. I’m not sure how this would fly in Corvallis. Smith better tell him it’s team first. If we don’t get him, I won’t really care after seeing his attitude on tape.

        • Parents live about 20 min from Clemson. They follow the team closely. Say he’s a good person and teammate. From everything I’ve seen he appears to be a good fit culture wise and I doubt JS would bring him on if he didn’t fit the mold. Hasn’t made that compromise so far in his 5 years and i don’t see that changing now.

    • So stoked. Even if he has another “down” year in which he throws for 22 tds and runs for 7 with only 7 turnovers, look out. He also accounted for a out another 1k in total yards more than both Nolan and BG combined. This is crazy.

        • For sure. Nearly 600 yds rushing. Lol. We don’t need him to run that much but I’m excited to see what the playbook can be like with a true dual threat. Also, while you can’t completely replace the Jackhammer, this definitely creates some more support in the short down situations.

    • 3
      17

Great. But he looks like a bit of an attitude problem. Hope he doesn’t ruin the great team chemistry. Smith better sit him down day 1 and emphasis maturity and team 1st. He seems to lack both when watching his Clemson tape.

      • 10

How does he look like an attitude problem? Everything I’ve ever read about the kid, long before he was in the transfor portal let alone a potential Beaver player, was that he is a really good kid and well liked.

        • Well if MMD is his cousin, he would be aware of what the locker room will be like coming in. I think it would be different if he had no connections within the team, then you’d be worried that he might come in with chip on his shoulder acting like big man on campus.
At this point, Beavs don’t need a BMOC but a guys who elevates the offense without disrupting team chemistry. If he gets through Spring and fall camp as a great teammate and shows no signs of “me first”, it is a huge win for the program.

        • Rewatching the Wake Forest and NC State games I don’t see too many red flags. I can’t think of a QB who ran 15 times a game and didn’t have at least a little attitude

      • Everything I’ve heard is he’s a good leader and great attitude. I think his Clemson coach Dave even said he’s one of those guys you want on your team just because of how good a teammate he is.

        • He was pretty graceful when he got benched. Think Clemson runs a good program, at least I haven’t seen anything that would point towards it but regardless, JS wouldn’t bring that into the program and if it does manifest, I’m sure he’ll cut it out. Perhaps that’s what the Nolan situation really was. Anyway, I’m super jacked for this pickup. He doesn’t need to put up Heisman numbers for us to be successful. Limit turnovers, create uncertainty with his dual threat ability and distribute the ball. We don’t need him to put up Williams or Penix or Nix type #’s to be good. Would be super fun of course, but not needed for us to be successful next year.

Also, this seems like a program changing commitment from the fact that we can say we’re able to play in sandbox for these top tier recruits or portal players. Speaks volumes. Getting Chiles and Howard, 2 of the highest recruits we’ve had in years and really from a total program perspective are very high up there, to now capping it off with a 5* of DJs caliber is incredible. He’d be the highest rated recruit in program history by a mile and hopefully this helps create more opportunities in the future for JS to grab more 4 stars each year. I’m not nieve enough to think we’ll become a recruiting force per say, but even being able to grab 4 or 5 legit 4 star guys vs 1 or 2, etc would be so huge.

        • 2
          7

His 2021 and 2022 Clemson highlights on YouTube. Great arm, really nice runner. I see the 5-star ability. My concerns are more with the mental part of the game. Dancing, chest pumping, and taunting opponents are not good looks.

          • I think you missed all of the trash talking the defense was doing this year. The DBs would be in the WRs face after every single play. Cooper locked up with the Oregon WR in the Civil War resulting in double personal fouls. Wright and Austin both jawed at every WR other other team.

I would love to see DJ flex on his little brother next year.

          • Yeah, there’s normal trash talking and then making the play about you, and what I see of DJ on film he likes to make it about him. That’s my perception. Could be wrong and won’t make a final judgment until he plays. I think it’s a great get and worth the risk, but I hope Smith has a short leash, a backup plan, and is willing to bench him if he turns out to be a problem.

      • 12

Angry, I’m worried about his on-field attitude /celebrations too. Hopefully being benched by Clemson humbles him a bit. All very strange for him to come to Corvallis already having two capable QBs in the cupboard. Do we all really think any one of these three guys will stick around ‘til the games begin next year? It’s very hard to tell, hopefully Gulbranson’s patience and leadership from already being behind Nolan shows and he sticks it out regardless. Chiles may up and leave if DJ becomes the starter. Oh well, a guess a good problem to have….Beavs going from rags to riches in the QB department.

      • 13

This is literally your worst take, and you have some horrible ones.
His teammates love him, his press conference after he got benched screamed “humble leader,” and he graduated in less than three years.

      • I think saying a guy has “too much” swagger and equating that to being a bad teammate is a stretch. I would even go as far as saying that feels like creating an excuse that you can call out later.
I know nothing about DJU other than a few minutes of tape and what the guys here are saying. And quite frankly neither does Angry. Life and football are both just a series of choices. Some work out as you intend and some don’t. I cannot see how anyone would be unhappy about this choice.
Colletto was brought in on scholarship to be a QB, that didn’t work out as intended but as a Beaver fan it has been great to watch him evolve.
Sports are supposed to be entertainment and a such to be enjoyed. I’m thoroughly enjoying this chapter of being a Beav. Go Beavs! Merry Christmas!

    • Just had to wait for the graphic to ve finished…

Let’s all remember what “commitments” are worth these days and hope for the best outcome….

    • Can someone here who is familiar with twitter monitor the reactions of his old Clemson teammates? Might give an insight to his character/team first attitude.

      • Haven’t seen anything on his announcement tweet except good luck and thanks from the Clemson folks. Not necessarily prior teammates but a lot of times there’s a lot of salt in the comment section but not seeing it. Also, guy did graduate already in 3 years which should account for something. I feel like he’s being found guilty of something and needing to prove he’s a good person when the reverse is in fact true. Everything points to him being a good person and teammate and he would need to prove he’s not. Also, if people don’t think JS and crew haven’t done homework on him and feel confident that he fits with this team atmosphere, I’m not sure what to say.

  75. It’s going to be a fascinating experiment to see how DJ fits in and develops under Smith/Lindgren. Success could open up the future for other high-profile transfers. Failure and he could leave for another program a la JD Daniels. There’s actually quite a bit riding on this.

Also, I read something about him losing eight fumbles this season. I couldn’t verify. Don’t know if it was a Clemson fanatic exaggerating, but if true that’s a ball security concern.

    • He had 4 lost fumbles on the year. None of the those occurred in games they lost.

Still 4 fumbles is too many. 1 or 2 on the year is the expectation.

        • So 29 tds and 11 turn overs? Pretty close to a 3:1 ratio. I’d take that. 4 fumbles is a bit much but he also was asked to run the ball a lot which would lead to more fumbles than a drop back guy. Think it’s interesting that he was a pro-style qb and goes to a school that wants a running qb. Maybe he didn’t think he’d be asked to do as much as he did? Perhaps he didn’t think he’d care about running the ball? Who knows but going to a more pro style offense might be what he needs.

        • 1 -2 on the year. He had 142 carries last year. 4 fumbles. 2.8% fumble rate.

Beavs ran it 524 times this year. A 2.8% fumble rate would result in 14 fumbles lost. Just pointing out that it’s a high fumble rate.

If he wins the job, he’ll run a lot less with the Beavs so it probably won’t be much of an issue.

  76. So, Jack is back and wannabeav has gone missing……hmmm, anyone ever seen those two degenerates together??

That said, here’s wishing a merry and meaningful Christmas to y’all. Now, go hug your family, even if they wear green and lemon.

  77. 15

Free article from Beav Blitz on his decision. He reached out to the Beavs as they were a top 3 school of his in mind. He liked Smith, and the pro-style offense. Says it’s not about the stats but to develop and grow from this coaching staff. Appears he’s done his homework on the Beavs. Understands what we do on offense and the pieces that are coming back and that speaks volumes to me. He’s not coming into the program to put up gaudy #’s and knows they like to involve the TE and get the ball to wr in space. Really liked what he had to say in the article.

  78. 10
    11

Okay, got it. I’m not saying this is a bad signing. It’s great in terms of risk/reward. Just pointing out yellow flags I see when watching the film. I see the greatness and ability, too. Big picture I don’t want to go the route of Oregon and sign flashy dudes who think just showing up is enough. If this guy is willing to put in the work and learn/change then yeah, great. If he wants to pump his chest and taunt opponents, he’s going to annoy the shit out of me. I mean, I stopped watching MLB entirely because of bat flips (and 3 outcomes I guess), so maybe the problem is me, but I just can’t stand the bad brand of trash talking and showing up opponents. It can be done in a funny way or even a classy way, but the ghetto shit, not for me.

    • You shouldn’t watch college baseball too. The bat flips and team celebrations are much more elaborate. Getting an extra base hit results in a mini celebration to the dugout. Beavs do it every time

      • disagree with the definition, except for the colloquial–incorrect but intended to mean something pejorative. Ghetto is specifically a constrained neighborhood where people of one identity are made to live… often strafed with machine guns… or redlined.
Short-term… long-term…. depends on what you want.

    • 10
      1

Piling on just a bit here but I just remembered, Chatfield and Oladapo did the gator chomp vs Florida. Pumped their chests, taunted Florida, and showed up the gators. Definitely not classy and somehow no penalties.

All I’m saying is that Smith isn’t a coach who reigns in his players to be all business. Beavs lean toward the DE era attitudes with slightly less personal foul penalties.

  79. 15
    2

My plan is to get up my recruiting rankings by Wednesday at the latest. The holiday and all delaying that. Signing off until then. Merry Christmas or whatever you celebrate, Beavos.

  80. 17

Here’s an idea, how about we let him play some games for OSU and see what his attitude is like? Maybe he learned some things by being benched. Also, if the celebrating is the worst thing he does is it really that bad?

    • 4
      5

Could be wrong and won’t make a final judgment until he plays.

^^^ I already said let’s see, but it’s a yellow flag (along with getting benched and bad games vs good teams). People aren’t as forgiving about Duck players taunting. Watch we don’t become what we hate.

      • It’s a huge commitment for the program, but that’s a recruiting win. He shouldn’t be seen as anything more than another guy in the QB room competing for the starting job.

There have been plenty of players with tons of potential that never quite figured it out.

On the other hand, most of them he criticism leveled at him wasn’t regarding the absolute results, just that results vs expectations. By any standard, he’s a quality pick up.

  81. I know we are all waiting on Oladapo, speight, rawls and Austin to see which ones will be back which are heading pro. Any positions of need besides secondary (if both Austin and Oladapo head out). Maybe dline and a mlb transfer?

Also with that being said any names we think we should be looking at? I’ve heard the staff has somewhere in the 5 more scholly for transfers and that is if the above 4 return. So I anticipate a pretty busy next few weeks for the staff- especially considering with the addition of dju should have some extra eye balls curious what’s going on that might not have a few weeks back

    • I think secondary will be OK regardless. Obviously if Austin and/or KP come back that’s huge but Cooper Jr, Thomas and Julian make a great core. I think Robinson played great in the bowl game so I’d assume that’s your starting 4. Mix in Akili Arnold who saw a lot of playing time his first few years and you have 5 guys in that rotation. Adding some depth would be great but I’m not super worried about the secondary even if neither of them come back. Personally, think they both should but I also wouldn’t be too worried if they didn’t.

      • yeah… i see a lot of young and hungry players, and i think that’s exactly what we need for a secondary
the staff has done a good job bringing in some great players, not hyped players
if the hyped want to be great, they can come along for the ride

  82. Merry Christmas Beaver fans.
I hope our new transfer is ready to compete. He looks to have the tools we need, let’s hope Smith turn him into a weapon.

  83. https://247sports.com/Article/Former-Clemson-QB-DJ-Uiagalelei-goes-in-depth-on-his-commitment-to-Oregon-State-jonathan-smith-football-recruiting-signing-day–201321942/

Some banger quotes in there he’s good at talking into the thing.

“I had three schools I liked a lot and Oregon State was one of them,” Uiagalelei said. “When I got in to the portal, I watched a lot of film on different schools and I love Oregon State’s offense and their style of play.

“I’ve watched Oregon State in the past and really like what they do. They throw to tight ends and backs and get the ball to the receivers in space. Like I said before, this is an offense that can prepare me for the NFL. It’s not about stats, that’s not what’s important, it’s development and I know I can get that from this coaching staff.”

  84. 5
    2

Figured since I’m up late, I should look for WR transfer candidates.
At Clemson, WR Beaux Collins is the type of guy that would make a ton of sense for the Beavs to pursue. 6’3″, good hands and good speed to create separation. Also went to HS with DJU at Bosco, besides playing with him the past few years at Clemson. And OSU recruited him pretty hard out of HS, so there is a past relationship there.
Only problem, he’s not in the portal.
If he enters the portal after their bowl game, he’d be a no brainer. Maybe some fans should share some encouraging words with him.

Merry Christmas to all of the angrybeavs out there!

We won’t have much to be angry about if JS continues the current trajectory. Does the site shut down if OSU gets to the Rose Bowl or Playoffs in the next 2 years?

    • Very well said sparkyd. Lets just enjoy the positive attention that this is bringing to a program that has at times been nothing more a punch line in a bad joke. I have a firm belief that Smith and and his offensive staff are going to develope DJ into the kind of QB this team needs. And out of that there will be a proven and solid backup in Gulbranson as well as a incoming freshman that is going to learn in a winning team culture. Its a bright future for sure.

Merry Christmas to all and a very happy New Year.

      • Nope.
        You hate him.
        That’s that.

On the bright side, when you fail to apologize for this imagined hatred, the, “I told you so,” part of it means we won a national championship.

  87. Merry Christmas all!

I hope everyone is enjoying family and food!

Football appetite mostly sated, just 2 or 3 more “bites” next year…

Yesterday I hit railroad tracks at an awkward angle and fell off my bike. My head somehow hit first on the road, and worse, right on the temple. I got up and finished the ride (20 miles), but today I feel super woozy. If I don’t make it, I’d like nicebeaver to inherit the site. I called the ER, and they said it sounds like a concussion; my concern is internal bleeding. But they said the CT scan is a lot of radiation so they don’t just go looking for that. I looked online and have no symptoms of internal bleeding. So I’m not sure what to do. Gonna give it another day I guess. Concussions are scary. Luckily I had just bought a new helmet with MIPS technology. I feel like it helped.

Might be a delay in getting up recruiting rankings. Mods can feel free to make a new thread, too.

    • Sounds like a pretty scary tumble. Hope you heal up and all is well with no long term issues. I enjoy the site and it wouldn’t be the same without the OG angry. Praying for you.

    • If you were wearing a quality helmet then it probably saved you the majority of the impact damage. Bell still rung obviously, but would have been much worse without it. Now go buy a new one because it’s possibly structurally compromised now.

    • 3
      2

Good luck! Concussions suck. If i had a kid who wanted to play football i would actually discourage it. They’re mostly unavoidable in football.

I once got hit in the temple once and my vision collapsed in a dark, contracting circle, had to stumble to the car with help…ER said concussion and sent me home. I’ve been fine ever since! Ha!

Rest up. Do they still recommend having someone wake you every 3 hours or so to check on you?

      • 1
        2

My oldest son showed interest in playing football after playing a bunch of two-hand touch at school. We steered him away and told him there are other, safer contact sports that won’t put his brain at risk. He’s in the “small fast guy” category, so it’s not like Little Beav in OH #1 was ever going to play high level football.

    • Thanks, guys. I’ll go tomorrow if things don’t improve. I wound up napping for over 2hrs and feel better after that, but not 100%. I get why Chase took forever to return now. ER said it could take 2 weeks even with a mild concussion.

      • When you feel better see about sending that helmet back to the mfg, I had a buddy who did that. The mfg sent a new one and analyzed the damaged one.

        Praying for a quick recovery.

      • Yeah watch out for mood swings and shit too. My stepson got rear ended a couple months ago and whiplashed and caught the steering wheel across the chops. Gave him a decent concussion and he was “off” mentally for a few days. Like bad enough that we took him back to the doctor.

        • Interesting. Last night I was rambling about wanting to move and how Christmas sucked this year. Haha. Came out of the blue. OOB, do they examine the helmet to see if it’s usable still? That would be good. Thing cost nearly $300 and I used it like 10x. Literally just bought it a month ago.

          • This was years ago; pretty sure they examined it for their own quality control purposes. At any rate, they found damage and replaced it with a brand new one.

Just guessing, but I think if it was found to be OK they would return it.

Can’t hurt to check, but your rest/recovery is the most important thing for now.

          • You can always offer such a thing to a company as an exercise in gathering telemetry.
It’s probably not a bad idea to replace said cranial.

  89. Third story on list in USAToday College Football is DJU to OSU:

“Oregon State, meanwhile, seemed a quarterback away from making the Pac-12 Championship game. The Beavers lost to eventual league champion Utah, 10-win Washington and league runner-up Southern Cal.

Uiagalelei would have two years of eligibility and a favorable chance to earn the No. 1 spot for a Power Five team with plenty of upside. The Beavers went 10-3 in 2022 and beat Florida, 30-3, in the Las Vegas Bowl. ”

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2022/12/24/dj-uiagalelei-clemson-football-transfer-portal-oregon-state/10951434002/

Good positive narrative with no “underdog” themes or unnecessary qualifiers …

With NIL and the transfer portal basically meaning players can be explicitly bought, college football is basically the NFL but with crappier players.
    I don’t watch the NFL.

Just catching up on today’s posts. Hope you’re doing a little better this evening Angry. Glad you had your helmet on.
Hope all had a nice xmas holiday

  92. Reading that interview where DJ mentions he reached out to Smith/Lindgren and not the other way around, i found that pretty surprising. Why wasnt he on their initial short list, considering the reached out to Card and Slovis already, per reports. Just seemed odd. So DJU basically fell into their lap which caused them to pivot and jump on the new guy. Glad it worked out for them in the end at least. Just hope he was actually on their short list in the first place.

  93. Pretty funny, wife and I-along with her three adult sons came back home tonight and turned on Brian Seltzer concert. Watched a song, decided to watch STUTZ instead. Heck of movie if a therapy documentary is your thing. Best part was the after movie discussion in the house.

Technically after Christmas, a belated wish to all.

    • 2
      3

I went down the metal/punk Christmas songs rabbit hole this year. Beyond my standard listening Bad Religion Christmas album I discovered a bunch of Weezer, some Flyleaf, Dio and TWO Rob Halford Christmas albums. Made a great playlist.

    • If any one happens to see a theatrical performance or movie that you liked and offers a brief talk with some of those involved after, can confirm it’s always illuminating and pretty cool to stay a few minutes longer to listen.

  94. 18

Regarding DJ and his attitude. Swinney said he was one of the best players he’s ever had in the locker room. I’ll take Dani’s word over anyone who guesses on the kids attitude from a few clips of film. And to think JS would bring in a player who would hurt the culture is silly to say the least. They got here by building the culture, it’s foolish to think they would stray from that.

  95. 10

    Merry belated Christmas angrybeav degenerates!

Can’t believe Santa brought us highly rated QB. Used to the usual lump of coal.

  96. I didnt realize how favorable next year’s schedule looked.
Non-Con: @SJSU, and vs UC Davis and SDSU
    Pac12: @WSU, @Colorado, @Cal, @Arizona, @Oregon
    Vs Stanford, UCLA, Utah, UW

Toughest games might be Colorado and Oregon on the road. Nice to get UW and Utah at home. The rest should all be considered Ws.

    • When does the actual schedule get released?

It seems doubtful that Colorado can flip the switch from a bottom feeder to top of conference in a year. No matter how many transfers they had the worst roster in the conference.

I think UCLA and Utah take a step back with new qbs, UW and NikeU will have a much harder schedule in conference and won’t duplicate what they did this year.

USC will be as good or better, OSU has a real shot at the conference next year.

      • 1
        1

CU might have much better skill position players but the weak points are their lineman. I like our chances in Boulder, more than our chances at home against UW and Utah.

I see 9-3, unless the three stars on defense come back.

        • I think there will be several teams viewing Colorado as an offense to the talent already in this conference. Sanders acts like a bunch of Jackson St players will come into PAC12 and win championships. I’m slightly offended by the hubris of it and I wonder how the guys on the various teams may view it.

The best perspective so far is the DE who wants to sack Deions son. I’d guess he will have a lot of similar attention just to make the point. All PAC12 teams will likely be United in disliking the Coach Prime nonsense and it will be taken out on his son each weekend on the field.

          • 1
            1

Sure, Colorado may throw for 300 yards against us and score 20 points.

Can they stop OSU’s run game? Very unlikely. I see us putting 40+ on them, again

          • I agree. Jackson St. doesn’t even play in what’s considered a top FCS conference. They would be the middle of the pack in the Big Sky and they’ve lost the championship game two years in a row to the MEAC. That’s not to say Sanders won’t get there, but I’m skeptical it’s going to happen overnight.

        • I’ll be interested to see how CU’s QB does in a new conference with a higher level of competition and depth. I like our chances against all three.

Austin and Oladapo returning seems like a real possibility, and if the offense is more productive, and the D gets to play with leads more often, they could get more TO’s, TFLs, & turnovers on downs. The home crowds should make it difficult for visitors.

    • Personally not too worried about CU. Believe it when I see it but don’t think that story ends well for Deon and Buffs. Beavs are going to be good and my biggest concern is beating ourselves and the refs. Hopefully we’ll begin to get fair spots and better calls. It was refreshing to see honest spots in bowl game from ACC refs. We even got the benefit of some first downs that may have been a tad short. If everyone comes back, I’m predicting 11-1. At worst 9-3. 12-0 is possible if DJU breaks out.

      • It will be interesting to see how Vegas evaluates the Beavs now that the profile is moving up. Not under the radar now.

Pretty easy money to bet the over for season total wins the last two years (4.5 and 6.5), likely be harder to put down $ next Fall. Not thinking the line will match your 11-1, but might be close.

  97. Hope DJU continues to comport himself well. Exposure for Beavers likely at its highest level in social media era. DJ’s “to-OSU” twitter announcement tallies 1.7M views, over 1,400 retweets and about 17K “likes.”

Other Beaver players can benefit from this increased interest and exposure, and it can be a good problem to have if managed well and properly by both media and coaching staff.

I hope the increased interest, 10-3 record, and likely top 20 2023 preseason ranking result in better game time slots.

  98. Thinking ahead to ’23, and the need taller/bigger receivers and who might be on the roster that fills that need (comments where provided are from Angry’s class rankings):

WR Jimmy Valsin – “Appears to be the Beavs answer to their undersized WR problem. Fast, agile, and cuts on a dime. Nice looking WR. Good win out of Texas. Only in-State offer was Houston, which is a bit of a concern, but this looks like a guy who has upside. I like what I see.”

Jack Velling (6’ 4”) – “Potential game-changing TE. Fluid runner with soft hands. Yale offer suggests high intelligence, so he should move up the depth chart fast.” Well recognized as a contributor already, but just looking back at the ranking.

TE Jake Overman (6’ 4”) — “Nice blocker and pass catcher. Very fluid and a motor. I can see this guy being a captain one day. That type of heart somehow shows on film. Hope he stays at TE because he looks elite there.” He should be on the field a bunch next year.

Also, Tongue and Dunmore both listed at 6’2” could add WR size. Dunmore showed well in the bowl game and should be getting more opportunities in ’23. There are several young WRs listed at 6’2” on the roster.

Could see Valsin and Dunmore on the field with Gould and Bolden…

Specialist? Kord Shaw – “My hunch is he might be a Colletto replacement.” This will be interesting if true. It seems like Shaw has been getting big.

Some interesting D players we might see showing up in the stat sheet?

DL Omarion Fa’amoe – “Looks legit. And he has an LSU offer. When was the last time OSU beat LSU for a recruit? Good size, fast, and plays mean. Disruptive player.”

DL, Takari Hickle – “I think this guy is underrated. Fast, physical, and finishes plays.”

    • JS has a template that he has stuck with in recruiting since he arrived and some of those guys are now ready to get on the field after 2-3 years preparing and dealing with Covid.
I am looking forward to seeing the chemistry and culture continue from this season into next season.

The program momentum is at an all time high, and prospects are better than after the Fiesta Bowl because so many key players return and the addition of a 5* potential superstar qb out of nowhere.

Off-season workouts should be full of motivated players ready for the next level of success.

Legitimate shot at 12-0 and a playoff/Rose Bowl run.

      • “JS has a template that he has stuck with in recruiting since he arrived and some of those guys are now ready to get on the field after 2-3 years preparing and dealing with Covid.”

Agree. I point out guys on the roster already because I like Smith’s approach of building depth, developing players, keeping them, and using transfers as a compliment to his system rather than relying on transfers. I’m not sure there’s a need to go get a transfer WR, but I wouldn’t be opposed if he was a humble, 6’4″ guy like Hodgins…

I think the biggest win challenges next year will likely be v. Utah and @ UO, and could see a 10 win regular season or 11 wins. I think college football is so variable, you almost have to figure in one game that was “coulda woulda” or maybe things just go wrong.

  99. 2
    1

The schedule as it is right now sets up favorably for the Beavs – a very early look because it’s before spring ball and before all transfers are in/out

SJSU – Head scratcher as to why this is a road game but an expected win
    UC Davis – Expected win
SDSU – faux conference opener – expected win

    Conference in alphabetical order
at Arizona – a team on the upswing but lost 3 good players to USC. Still will have a good offense. Total 20 transfers out so far. Gained Flowe from Oregon to help the defense which was bad. Probably a net zero gain. Second toughest road game. Still an expected win
at Cal – team on the downswing. Have no QB on the roster right now. Maybe they land a Hudson Card and that changes things dramatically. Expected win
at Colorado – pretty much any transfer in is going to be better than the current players. Colorado is a darkhorse team. Not sure what they’ll be with so much change everywhere. Expected win
at Oregon – Nix coming back is huge for them. Schedule is favorable for them as well. USC and OSU at home. Utah and UW on the road. Not a tough non conference. 50/50 game. Toughest road game
at WSU – Same QB but all new coordinators and lots of transfers out. Best defensive player left and a few WRs too. Expected win.
Stanford – another team that is a mess. Not sure how they replenish their team with transfers due to academic standards. 18 transfers out. 1 transfer in so far. Going to take a few years to rebuild. Expected win.
UCLA – Have a new QB but he’s a veteran so the drop off might not be there. Have not been hit hard by the transfer portal. I’d say a 50/50 shot at a win.
Utah – breaking in a new QB as well but Utah is always tough. 50/50 game.
UW – Penix is back and they are getting decent transfers in. Toughest home game. 50/50 game as well.

So I’d say 9.5 is the opening over/under. 8 expected wins. No games where they’d be a big underdog. 3 of the 50/50 games are at home.

But this can all change with more transfers/injuries/life.

    • Good write up. I’m skeptical about Chip having a qb as good as DTR right away, and I don’t think Uw can repeat the same productivity as they just did without some of their online guys. Oregon has another OC and I’ll wait and see if they get better on defense or if Nix regresses in year 2, which I expect.

I think your analysis is spot on for the conference. Beavs have as good a chance to win as ever, even with so many solid qbs to compete against. Great time
      To be a Beaver.

    • SJSU is a home and home TV $ deal, they are scheduled to come to Corvallis in 2029.

They’ve been putting a lot more $ into their program/facilities. Think they’d prefer to throw their hat in the Pac-12 ring with SDSU, UNLV, and BSU.

Lots of OSU ties with that program and Brent Brennan.

        • Yeah they are building their new football facility building adjacent to the field and wont have seating for now. I think the plan is to eventually expand in phases like Reser. SJSU is a really old school, oldest public university on the west coast I think. Something like 35k students. They churn out a ton of silicon valley workers that aren’t a part of the CAL/Stanford socio-economic class.

    • Cool. They’re supposed to play the Beavers in Corvallis in ’24. If he doesn’t leave for the NFl after ’23, Beaver fans could see him at home.

  100. Does anyone know the status of the PAC’s viewing distribution rights and negotiations? This seems like an opportune time to negotiate:

    1) 6 PAC teams in top 20, most will likely be top 25 post-bowl season and likely preseason ’23;
    2) PAC is loaded with interesting QB’s, inlcuding ’22 Heismann winner;
    3) Last chances to see USC/UCLA in league games before they move to the BIG have success less frequently;
    4) Unfortunately, Deion Sanders is going to bring a lot of attention to the PAC.
    5) Other?

Is it a good time to strike up a deal with Amazon?

Or in the big picture (no pun intended) is PACs leverage still weak due to other conference deals lined up, potential perception PAC is going to become irrelevant, with more teams leaving it in the near future?

  101. 11

Oob, thanks for asking. Feeling quite good today. Biked 32 miles and felt fine. I’d say 95% normal. On hills I felt a little dizzy, but otherwise fine. 48hrs after the incident, so my biggest concern, brain bleed, is probably over. For those of you who wanted me to perish, you’ll have to wait a bit longer! I’m actually just about to start going through the recruiting footage. Should be on schedule with that tomorrow or Wednesday.

    • Damn, I was looking forward to giving this sit the Elon Musk treatment. New features daily. All bans terminated.

But also glad to hear you’re feeling better and on the mend.

      • 4
        1

All bans have been terminated and were long ago. Except maybe NucBeav. That guy became such a deranged snowflake I might still have the ban on him. I forget. It’s a shame, because I like him, and think in an alternative universe where he wasn’t being ruled by estrogen we could have been friends. But all other bans I know are gone. Usually they’re just temporary unless someone is a stalker. The Elon Musk treatment would look something like railing on the government for ruining angrybeavs and then begging the government for an angrybeavs contract that makes you a billionaire. Lol.

  102. Looking at the film now. I don’t see how DJU, Chiles, and Howard aren’t all legit 5-stars. Latter two clearly got the Beaver downward bump. Those are 5-star players by any objective metric.

    • 2
      1

So much of it can be based on how many camps they go to or just how many more talented players are ahead of them. They only give out so many 5 star ratings a year and some high school classes are stronger than others.

      • 8
        2

It sounds like they need to adjust their methodology. Either a guy is a 5 star or isn’t. It shouldn’t be determined by camps, number of 5-stars to hand out, or any other ridiculous methodology. It’s skill level, and that’s it. Chiles is insane. The more I watch him the more I think he might even be better than DJU. Mostly because of his insanely quick release, decision making, and efficiency. So good.

        • 5
          1

Yep, our QB room went from weakness to major strength. Nicely spaced class too… Chiles F, BG So, DJU Jr.

FWIW – My sister’s friend is married to an assistant at SDSU. Met him at holiday party in SoCal several weeks ago. He said Chiles is incredibly good. He got a chance to see the kid in person twice and was very impressed with his arm talent, athleticism, and IQ… “legit superstar”… “can’t believe he’s going to Oregon State.”

        • Not sure what Chiles tape you’re watching, but the big negative I saw is he isn’t going through progressions at all. Passes are all the first read and he runs if it isn’t there. The tools are good, but unless I’m missing something, he’s going to have to develop in that area or the offense is going to have to change to suit him.

He can definitely develop, but we shouldn’t expect him to be a starter immediately.

          • 2
            3

Exactly, and no HS QB goes through progressions. What’s amazing is how quickly he makes decisions. Spots the open guy and boom, ball is out and on target.

          • That’s what I’m seeing. Being on time and not late is critical and Chiles seems to recognize when the receiver will be open before he’s open based on how the D is set and rotating. Super impressive at the HS level

          • Do you have any examples of HS QB tape where you can see the QB going through progressions? I don’t know how you could actually see it. I looked at Patrick Mahomes tape… drop back, scramble around, make crazy ass throw for TD. Not really going through progressions but going off script to find an open receiver. BTW, if you consider Mahomes was a 3* and watch his tape, recruiting rating lose all credibility. How could he not be a 5*

          • But if his first or second option is open, does he NEED to keep going through his progressions? They’re the early reads for a reason dependent on down/distance.

Now if he’s consistently leaving plays out there, for example a 2-4 read is wide open for a big gain or TD, then I could see its a problem.

But if the early read(s) are open, and he’s got a quick release and he’s moving the chains, sounds like he’s doing his job within the offense.

Its likely he WILL need to work on progressing through his reads in college against higher levels of competition and better DBs, but there’s no reason to suggest that he can’t develop in that regard.

      • There’s more or less a fixed number of 5-stars, so there’s a bit of a curve, too. I think size is too heavily weighted, as it’s obvious guys will add weight and muscle in college, but the raters prefer guys that are already college-sized.

    • Are you evaluating DJU on what he is now or what his high school film was? He posted some great stats in high school. 67% completion rate, 127 TDs vs 11 Ints over 3 years plus 18 rushing TDs.

    • DJU out of HS was a 5 star. 2nd rated QB in his class and by far the highest rated player Oregon State has ever brought in.
A big part of that rating was his size compared to other HS kids. In college l, the game spead up and he doesnt look quite as dominant, but still is a physical specimin at that position with a ton of potential.

I feel if OSU focuses on their ground game and just chewing up yards for first downs and doesnt get too oass happy, they’ll he tough to stop. DJ U is good for 5 yards pretty much any time we need a QB sneak. Add that to Martinez/Jam/Fenwick/Lowe and we can beat teams into submission.
And if we get 7 or 8 yards on first down, we can afford to take a shot down field here amd there, with more confidence the ball will find its target

        • I met Howard in vegas, dude is an absolute monster. Looks like an nfl starter at his age. Can’t imagine high school kids defending him

Also met isiaha chisom i think Chisom is a bonified star. Again looked if not quite nfl yet, like a senior or junior in college guy. Absolute beast. Only 2 recruits I’ve met of this class both in vegas for the bowl game, and thought these 2 dudes gonna cause some headaches for offenses and quick

          • Develop Howard and Chisom the first 8 games on the practice squad, give them spot duty the last four (and most challenging) games and they they could surprise opponents while preserving their redshirts.

          • With transfer portal, preserving RS is less important. If they’re ready to play and can help you win games, they play. Otherwise, you’re just preserving eligibility for another program as a grad transfer.

        • Unless I misunderstood Beav Blitzz they stated on their pod that DJU would be the highest rated recruit we’ve ever had. Guess it doesn’t really matter but def think he’s the highest

          • 1
            4

I don’t really consider him a recruit because he’s a transfer. And he’s coming due to getting benched and poor play, I wouldn’t count it that way either.

          • Carter Bahns said had he committed right out of HS he would be the highest rated recruit in OSU history by a mile, but since he’s transferring in, DJU doesn’t count towards recruit rankings.

          • Just based on film and seeing the 2 in person, I’d be shocked if Howard isn’t an impact player right away. And Chisom isn’t at least 2nd string. Telling you

    • 2
      6

This pretty much sums up our QB situation last season:

“They’re not going to ask too much of (him.) The quarterback play the Beavers got this year was disgusting, it was gross. The quarterbacking this year combined for 16 touchdowns and 13 picks between (Ben) Gulbranson and (Chance) Nolan.”

      • Exactly. How good would’ve this team have been if DJ had a “bad” year and threw for 22 tds to 7 picks. Also ran for 7 tds and 550 yds. Lol.

          • DJ’s issue was the big games, he was bad against South Carolina and Notre Dame. Not, 4 INT or BG vs Dux awful, but when you have a 5* on the bench, you pull them before it can get that bad. I think it is a huge upgrade and but I’m waiting to see him big moments before I start having Rose bowl hopes. Last time I had preseason Rose Bowl hopes was 2001 and that didn’t go so well.

          • 1
            4

That was one of my two yellow flags mentioned above. He seemed to have his worst games vs any decent d he faced. Of course, that’s probably going to be all QBs, but when a guy has this much hype you expect him to perform vs those defenses. When he doesn’t, it’s alarming.

          • I watched the condensed footage of the Clemson South Carolina game. Dont know know how their fans are pegging that loss on DJ. He wasnt fantastic by any stretch, but the team turned over the ball multiple times which were not DJs doing. And their defense was pretty terrible, allowing Ratler to convert multiple long 3rd down conversions. Clemson as a whole looked like garbage. DJ actually played a decent game but nobody could hang onto the ball.

          • Some people are acting like he’s a reclamation project, damaged goods or something…he had a few bad games that weren’t all on him. Just as his great games were not all on him.

  103. Working on recruiting film this morning. Why is Hatten at 3-star? He’s at worst a 4-star, and maybe a 5-star. That is a clear NFL caliber player. He can get open with ease and make every catch, good speed, love how he cradles the ball into his body. Looks like a taller Cooks.

    • His body control is really impressive. Offer/visit sheet is impressive (Baylor, TCU, Arkansas, etc).

You know what else I love? He’s a winner. Won a state championship in football and was basketball district POY leading a team deep into the state tourney.

Only thing I can guess is limited camp exposure or some kind of high 40 time somewhere is casting doubt on him.

      • Yeah his speed only looks good not elite. But jeez………………..this is nuts, but he almost reminds me of Jerry Rice the way he gets open, catches, and moves around.

    • I can’t remember but it was either hatten or reddicks that were on 4 star watch so right there. The fact that he’s not taller probably hurts his rating somewhat.

  104. What is Leonard Ah You’s deal? Is he going to be on campus or is he going on mission? Might not be worth reviewing him, though he does look freaking great…jeez. Real bummer the mission guys.

  105. Where can I find current senior year highlights for Aidan Chiles?
Most recent link I see if from September.
Could be he stopped bothering making film after he committed.

  106. Okay, only have 5 more recruits to watch film on. Should have this done by tomorrow, but I have to do other things today. This is a really good class. There are some really feisty “chip on their shoulder” guys in this class who I think Beaver fans are going to love. Zach Card really stands out in this regard. Jermod McCoy is another. Average ability, but super feisty players with Colletto type heart on film.

  107. 3
    2

Interesting note I found on Chiles: The youngest top quarterback in the 2023 cycle, with a September birthday. Did not turn 17 until a month into his senior season and is well over a year younger than many of his blue-chip peers.

I’m ranking him a 5-star. That’s what I see. That he’s that much younger just confirms it.

  108. on3 is predicting Utah’s Mason Tufaga to the Beavs. His older brother was on the roster a few years ago. Would be a redshirt soph. 3 to play 3.

4 star recruit out of high school. Redshirted 2021 and did not play in 2022. That’s a question that needs answering. Would think he’d at least make a rotation somewhere. Didn’t record any participation stats so he didn’t even step onto the field. No news of injury either.

Also in the portal is Ethan Calvert. Another top LB out of high school.

Curiously, the top 3 recruits from Utah’s 2021 class all are/have transferred. All were rating in ESPN’s top 300. The other was Peter Costelli who transferred to Troy and is back in the transfer portal for the second time.

  109. I’m a couple weeks late to this news but it sounds like choir boy Marcus Mariota basically left the Falcons team earlier in the month after being told he was getting benched for poor play. Weird situation. Bru you’re just not a very good NFL QB.
