Recruiting 9/6

Beavs land 3 star WR Richard Mullaney. Mullaney's most prestigious offers were from Washington, Oregon State, and Utah. Good recruiting victory for the Beavs.

On Saturday, the much-needed Jesse Williams committed to Alabama.

Some other notes:

1. Puka Lopa, Viliami Moala, Darryl Paulo and James Sample want to play for the same team, and OSU and ASU are the only teams to offer all four.

2. Cody Kurz had his offer pulled. A sign the coaches are looking for more speed/hybrid from their future linebackers?

3. Brock Haman will likely end up at UCLA. The Beavers aren't entirely out of the picture, but their odds are low.

4. Tyrequek Zimmerman was luke-warm after his visit, saying he's a "pretty solid" commit. Not sure how this is going to play out, but it feels a lot like Tremaine Thompson's recruitment a few years back.

5. Cyrus Hobbi is going elsewhere.

  1. Beavs better start landing some defenders soon.

Still have zero cornerbacks, linebackers, or d-tackles in this class and it’s over half full.

    • You have to think it’s between ASU and OSU. They didn’t seem to love the weather in Arizona, but did have some good things to say. Too early to tell, so sure, there’s a chance.

  2. It would be huge if we could land those guys. Besides Anthony Lewis, are there any other players that we have a legit shot at getting? Also, I wish we would recruit more down in the southeast, we need some more speed.

    • I think he just means they have a game to play before Boise State, so he doesn’t want to think/talk about that one. I agree, Louisville is not a given. I think they’ll win, but only if they take the game seriously.

      • Yeah, but with the depressed look he had at the end of the TCU game, I wonder if part of it has to do with the fact he’s scared to go against another fast, and ranked, team…

But you’re right…it’s good to think about one game at a time.

  3. Heartbreaker if you land Colt. He has been seen a lot of Duck games decked out in green and yellow in the past, but lately seems off the radar. Jack, any insight with your moles?

    • I’ve stayed away from the Lyerla conversation primarily because I thought he was a heavy UO lean if he stayed in-state. I haven’t asked my UO friend about what national schools are chasing him. I also have not asked whether or not the Chipster wants him in a position he doesn’t want to play… or if he feels UO has filled the slot he wants to play. That would be the only way OSU gets him away from UO in my mind.

I guess holding out hope for the ‘Grant Four’ is what keeps OSU from chasing other in-state kids with huge upsides. I know UO has gone the glory route for drawing highly rated in-state players, but OSU needs to establish better relationships with local high schools in order to draw those same recruits.

Greatwood made a superb move by grabbing Euscher when he could. I’m peeved at the Beavs for ignoring him for more than one reason. There’s a skill player at Aloha who is absolutely electric. OSU fans will be wondering why we missed out on Thomas Tyner in a couple years. Not having a track and field team hurts enough when trying to recruit an elite athlete like Tyner, but ignoring obvious talent on the same team doesn’t help.

Of course, Tyner will probably be fast enough by the time he graduates to be signed to a pro contract by Nike, and he’ll just head off to Europe to make millions on the T&F circuit.

I saw that UO picked up Austin Kuemper. He’s not a bad get for them at this stage. Hustle and hard work will make him a good Pac 10 role player at the PF in a couple years.

  4. I was just feet from Colt when he caught the Hail Mary and outmuscled a guy into the endzone for the win against Glencoe. Here’s hoping he becomes a Beaver legend like Terry Baker.

    Angry,

Speaking of helping recruiting..I think College Gameday just may come to the Boise St.-Oregon State game. That extra attention would be very nice even if Corso puts on a bronco head. I think Katz and the Rodgers Bros will keep us in this game too. We will see if Katz can keep the offense on the field longer. Get a few first downs and then go for the home run ball. Needs to be more intensity all around. One extra push of pressure or made tackle or sack can get our guys back on the field. We maybe didn’t tie that TCU game just because one defender pushed a little harder to get to Katz and he had to adjust his arm and recock it. If he has two more inches that ball when have been out and James probably strolls in for the untouched touchdown. Small differences can have a big effect. But if we show more intensity and give the other team more confusion and less confidence they will be under more pressure and can make more mistakes. We have to be effective and cause some chaos into the opposing team’s minds.

  5. I wouldn’t lose sleep over Lyerla. The probability that he qualifies are about the same as the odds of him flying to the sun on wings of pastrami.

If he suddenly has interest in OSU, it’s because he thinks he can get in easier. I’ve heard nothing but negative things about his personality and work ethic. True? I have no idea, but you know what they say about smoke and fire…

  6. Thanks Jack. Love your insights.

I hate saying it, because rumors can kill someone’s life-long rep – & especially sad if inaccurate to boot, but the words PED and Colt have been suggested together. I have zero knowledge of anything here and it certainly could be pure JUNK, so I hate bringing it up, but it is floating around out there. And if it is/was true, I hope like heck he has changed his ways. Man the kid has talent and I hate seeing anyone not take advantage of the gifts they are given.

I hope Kuemper gives the Dux a little breath of life in recruiting. And even tho I really like Altman and did not care for Kent at all, I think this year is going to be a train wreck in B-Ball. I like who we got as a coach in the end, but what a cluster getting him. Anyway, if we can only win one Pac 10 game I’ll be happy. Don’t want to share in a perfect Pac 10 basketball record with you guys. But it is certainly possible with our current roster.

      • Nike happened.

Kent opened the door to outside influence through his personal mistakes, and Nike stuck their shoe in the door. The hiring of Kenny Payne was a huge mistake, and Kent was too weakened in his position to stop it.

When it was obvious to even Nike that Payne couldn’t teach a new dog old tricks, let alone develop a real hoopster, they brought in Mike Dunlap to do that job. The chemistry absolutely sucked among the staff, and it showed on the floor.

Their last Elite 8 was more luck than it was talent and hard work. Think back to the players you actually remember being good at UO, and names like Luke, Fred, Alex and eve come to mind.

        • I’m trying to think of any bigs other than Hairston who came through the UO hoops program in the last six years, and I’m drawing a blank.

Kent pretty much screwed himself back then. The rumors in 2005 were that the Mexico thing had been going on for a couple years, and everyone higher up the food chain knew it.

I wonder what would have happened to the UO 2007 run if Taylor and Hairston would have transferred that summer like they were about to do.

Last year was only a matter of time.

    • PED at the high school (or even college) level is a scary notion. I remember watching USC a few years ago and thinking Cushing looked suspicious because of the ridiculous definition in his arms and his rage on the field.

      Lyerla has a similar aura.

But as of now GED is more of a problem than PED.

  7. fwiw, Buker tweeted this out of the blue today:

“Another name from Texas to remember in terms of OSU recruiting: 6-4, 295 OT, LG, DT D’Angelo Balca of C.E. King HS in Houston”

    http://twitter.com/Pnbuker/status/23926290443

Not sure what his source is but Rivals has him unrated. So probably came from their board. I’ll take all the depth we can get on the d-line.

On a side note Frahm and Olander were pathetic in the TCU game. They were tossed around and played with by the offensive line all game. No surprise, i guess…

  8. We need to wear the Giant Killer uniforms against BSU. Nike allows teams to schedule other games with them besides the one officially scheduled as a must. We would be missing an excellent chance to showcase Oregon State athletics and the fact that we are RELEVANT. It will help recruiting in the coming weeks and months and whether we win or lose it will still be good to see them once more in the Civil War. I hope Bobby D. isn’t too conservative because it will just cost us a golden chance to highlight our program to the world. The all whites are getting a bit boring and we have been losing in them lately. The fans want to see the new unis and having them early and again late will make both occasions special. Boise St with them having a potential national title on the line and the Civil War are both Giant Killer worthy occasions. Let’s bust em out and show the world that Beaver football is an exciting brand! GO BEAVS!!

  9. Wait, wait, let me get this right, OSU fans are now now spending time debating which of their Nike uniforms they should wear to which game to get attention. Oh this is rich – very rich indeed. Don’t get your panties in a wad. Just having a little fun at your expense.

  10. Can we start a KENZEL DOE fan club? I’m telling y’all, this guy will make it seem like James Rodgers has four more years of eligibility… this kid is THAT good. I bet you hear STARTS next season in place of Rodgers who will be catching TDs and returning TDs on Sundays.
