Recruiting News 12/5

1. Storm Woods solidified his commitment on the trip. He loved the Civil War atmosphere, and canceled his visit to Utah.

2. As many of you probably heard, California wide receiver Tyler Trosin has committed to the Beavers. He's listed as a 2-star recruit, but if you watch his film he plays like a 4 to 5 star. Anyone else envision a faster version of Wes Welker, who, incidentally played at Texas Tech? Hm.

3. Larry Scott committed. He's another WR out of California. There's nothing glamorous about this prospect, but he looks solid. He's quick and has nice lateral agility, which again makes me wonder if the Beavers are going to move to some form of an air raid attack.

Now that the season is over and the coaches can focus on recruiting, there will probably be a lot of news in the next few weeks. Hopefully we start landing offensive and defensive linemen soon as the class is filling up fast. Also, if the Beavers were to change offenses this would be the year to do it since the staff has a lot of free time on their hands.

  1. If we saw a change in OC, do you think guys like Zimmerman would decommit? I know he said one of the reasons he decided to come here was because of the offense we ran and how he’d get out there a lot.

    • Perhaps, but he’d have less value in an air raid, so it wouldn’t be as huge a deal as it is now in a pro-style.

This would be the year to make the change. No bowl game=a lot of free time for coordinators and the QB.

  2. So you think OSU is stockpiling all these WRs because they are going to a Texas Tech style offense, ala the Cliff Kingsbury days?

Does Katz have it in him?

Does Mike Leach know he’s joining the program in the next month and getting all these WRs was part of the deal to get him here?

  3. I feel really sick today. I know the Beavs played about as well as they could, but I’m still sick. Losing three years in a row to oregon is inexcusable! Mike Riley should receive a $50,000-$100,000 or more bonus for beating oregon. This really hurts you deep in your gut as a Beaver fan. Not only does OSU stay home for bowl season, but now our hated rival is playing for the National Championship! God help us all if they end up winning it! It is very obvious to this Beaver fan that the two programs are heading into two opposite directions. OSU had their chances during the past three seasons to take the program to new heights, but failed to do so. The OSU athletic department needs to be open to change in areas such as marketing, assistant coaching adjustments, recruiting, uniforms (like the Giant Killer’s), advertising, coaching contracts (If our goal isn’t to go to the Rose Bowl every year, then why have a football team?). OSU needs to be appealing and attractive to 15-19 year old kids, not just to alumni! Or we will never get higher ranked recruiting classes, more face time on ESPN, and positive exposure OSU so desperately needs. OSU is at a crucial period for its future! I think Mike Riley’s contract should only be extended under these conditions: 1) Conference Championship, 2) Ranked in the top 15 in the final poll, 3) A Top three finish in PAC-10. Going to the craphunger/ADHD/Ricky Bobby Bowls shouldn’t count! The only bowl games that should count to OSU are the Rose Bowl (or other BCS Bowl), Alamo Bowl, or the Holiday Bowl! Bottom line is this. If Beaver Nation only settles for 6-6, then anything above that is a bonus type of attitude, then this is the best we are ever going to get! It’s a self fulfilling prophecy! It is time to change the attitude and the mindset for good ole OSU and aim for new heights!

  4. We better not take any more WR’s. The only ones I would take would be Blackwell if he wanted to switch or Thomas possibly. Other than that, the staff needs to focus on the lines!

  5. I’m not sure who we would really ideally want as a OC or DC. Anyone have any ideas?

I know everyone knows my #1 choice, but it’s a long shot and somewhat of a risk at a D-1 level. Although, it appears that it deals with what Angry was saying about utilizing some zone spread option read type stuff along with the current pro-style set we have and it appears that Smith’s offense is run primarily out of shotgun. which would be considerably different than our current system…predictable.

    • Extremely disciplined and understands how to fill lanes and shed blockers. Below average lateral speed that he covers by an instinctual nose for the ball. Is in on every play, extremely smart player.

      Angry will probably disagree though.

    • He looks fast, and shed blocks decently. We’re seeing “highlights” though…I’d like to see an average play by the guy. With his downhill style I can envision him running right past guys and/or missing tackles often.

  6. According to Cliff, Riley wants to get some JC guys for the defensive front seven, but he isn’t looking at any JC guys for the O-line. I’m not familiar with the depth chart on the offensive line; should we be concerned?

  7. BTW, angry, where did you read that Storm Woods soldiified his commitment?

Was Civil War weekend the first time he stepped foot on campus?

I hope everyone realizes that losing Woods would have been horribly devastating.

I’ll predict right now that Woods will become an All-American and will be Jacquizz’s replacement (homer shades off, even).

I don’t know how Malcolm Marable or Malcolm Agnew fit in. I see Jovan Stevenson barely sniffing the field the rest of his career. Terron Ward, however, could become the change-of-pace speed back.

What’s your opinion on this, angry? And what do you think will become of Marable?

    • +++ on this one. I like Woods and Ward. I also like Marable and Agnew for their abilities, but Woods and Ward show star power.

But I was one who screamed that we should be going after Ward when no other school did. I see more in him than I do in a lot of players.

I know gladbeav has shared some insight on practice/game schedules for RB’s, but we need some shared time with these guys. We don’t necessarily need a specialization with any one of them that makes the play obvious from the outset.

    • What would be interesting to see, is if Woods and Ward are given a real chance to compliment Quizz and diversify the offense.

Watching Oregon plug-n’play RB’s should have shown something to Riley and company. Oregon always had a fresh RB available, conversely everyone knows at OSU only Quizz is going to get a hand off (unless its a fly sweep).

Seeing all three getting meaningful plays would be outstanding.

    • I think I’m just about through with Riley’s attitude. There’s a time to be nice and have patience, you know, let cooler heads prevail sorta thing. Then there’s a time to punch someone in the mouth. Riley has a very fatherly persona that is highly desirable for most men, I’m just not sure it’s the best for a football team.

      • Riley’s demeanor would be fine as long as he was all for being calm while stepping on the opponents throat and playing through the 4th quarter. AND if he could win in the preseason.

I think a potential role for Riley remains – something in administration or recruiting? Not so much the actual recruit evaluation and prioritization of recruits, but being the link that the parents in the living room can trust. I don’t know the position would be, but he seems to have some value in that regard.

I think he gets one more year before he’s pressured to make changes in coaching staff, and I think he’s at least 3 years away from any job change himself.

  8. Looks like Tyler Trosin’s team, Folsom High whooped up on Grant HS and all their studs in the CIF Div II Championship game on Friday, 41-20.

Trosin had 8 catches for 93 yards 2tds and 1 rush for 8 yards.

Folsom had lost to Grant earlier in the season 14-49. Folsom has put up some crazy offensive numbers this season. Looks to be a good find by Riley and the Beavers.

Look at his stats this year, amazing:
    http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/cfIJ9smX-Uq9obQlC7PxRg/folsom-bulldogs/football/schedule.htm

    • His teammate and fellow WR, Jordan Richards committed to Stanford.

Maybe Riley should get Folsom’s QB, Dano Graves, to come run the air raid offense for us. (59tds 5 ints this year)

      • Those are some pretty sick numbers.

About this “Air Raid” idea, though…
We used to run lots of 3 and 4 receiver sets, especially with Hass/DA, where we’s play 3 receivers on one side, Hass 1v1 on the other, and a single back. That formation was amazing, and Hass won Receiver of the Year. We may not go “Air Raid” with these new receivers, but getting back to that old set would be a great start.

I think that’s why we’re recruiting those guys so hard. Not to be the Texas Tech of the Pac12, just so we have some actual passing weapons.

        • Didn’t Hass win the Fred Biletnikoff with Matt Moore slinging it? Beavers put up their best numbers when Mike Riley called all the plays and the offense doesn’t look as good when Langsdorf calls the plays……weird

          • Possibly. The point is that we play much better with mass receivers and a single back, not 7 players on the line and 2 receivers. And it seems like we may be going back to that, especially with Halahuni/Rodgers/Wheaton/Bishop headlining next year.

  9. Beavs land Desmond Collins, an Idaho commit. I don’t like his film–he gets pushed around a lot.

Desmond, please remain a Vandal so Great White Hunter can rip you apart on his new site, and I don’t have to. Danke.

  10. “I love that,” Riley said. “I love high expectations. I love how that has changed. I think that has been probably one of the biggest changes, outside of the actual football, that surround this program is that expectations are growing all the time.

“I’m glad fans would expect otherwise, because we certainly do.”

Funny, Doesn’t show that you do have high expectations and try to reach them….then again, maybe they did have high expectations and once we started losing after starting off 3-2 then losing JR….we didn’t know how to handle ourselves when we saw our chances for the Rose Bowl slip a little. We allowed ourselves to get up on ourselves, down on ourselves, up on ourselves…etc…etc.

  11. Oops forgot to add this: by doing that, perhaps it’s a learning curve in how to take high expectations when they don’t quite go as planned when you start to lose. Some players probably felt that their dreams of the Rose Bowl were slipping and so they slipped themselves by losing focus. They couldn’t grasp that they lost to 2 top ranked teams, yet they beat up on good Pac-10 teams like Arizona and ASU…but go out and lost to UW!

  12. Unrelated complaint- I think the NCAA rule on post-season practice and bowl games is awful. With spring and fall practices carefully monitored and regulated, it’s arbitrary and unfair that you are allowed to practice only up until your bowl game if you have one.

It’s obviously stomping a struggling team while they’re down, but that’s not the only problem. For one thing, conferences with better bowl tie-ins have much later bowl games. Practice until Jan 4 is a huge difference vs practice until, say, Dec 20. That’s two weeks- half of the allowed spring practice! It’s a systemic advantage for the Big 10 and SEC.

I’m surprised I haven’t heard more about this- am I missing something?

  13. Why is Riley wasting the handful of scholarships OSU has left stealing recruits from the Idahos and Utah States of the world, when he should be determined to use them on players like Viliami Moala, Stefan McClure, and Davon Moreland?

Isn’t there a reason a recruit only gets offers from 5th tier non-AQ programs?

    • Lewis backed out completely and now wants to go to Boise State, though they have not offered him. Looks like he might wind up settling for Wyoming.

  14. Angry,

What changes need to be made at OSU to get to the next level, BCS Bowls again? I think it is deeper than recruiting, winning more games, and coaching. I think OSU must do a better job marketing and getting its name out there to attract 14-19 year old kids to want to come to OSU! Right now UO is the sexy, and attractive school to play for. OSU is being left in the dust. I know we don’t have the George Steinbrenner of college football, but we have passionate fans! Phil Knight said it himself that “we are exactly on plan.”

    http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2010/12/phil_knight_on_oregon_ducks_as.html

Where does OSU “plan” to be? Seems like we are just winging it with a passive approach, which is disheartening as a fan to watch. The evil empire is being built, and we are doing nothing! What are your thoughts? Is there an article about OSU being left behind, lack of creativity, lack of focus, vision, or directon in your future plans?

  15. Very thankful we are not 6-6 and headed to a “who cares” lame bowl with Riley getting a pat on the back and an extension. We never came back from even a point down this year. Most of the year was a disappoitment with lack of energy, focus, guts or leadership. Just because we could have caught one break and be 6-6 does not mean Riley and staff didn’t do a poor job this year getting the team committed, passionate and on task. I really feel his contract that rewards 6-6 like it is 10-2 is THE SINGLE BIGGEST PROBLEM with Oregon State football. It is a recipe for mediocrity and the fans are tired of it! Reward Alamo and BSC bowls and just give a small bonus for a Holiday Bowl. Everything else is a down year in the fans’ book. Until Decarolis and Riley start to man up and expect more of themselves and the program we will be forced to be content with 6-6 for a long time because Riley can already extend his contract through about 2029 if he just keeps bringing the 6-6 records and Hunger and New Mexico Bowls that none of us care a lick about. What a shame we aren’t “right on path” like the program just to our south. Give Nike full control of our marketing and let them build us up to as close to another Oregon as possible. They have the best chance of success in upgrading OSU Football and I think with Nike leadership we can atleast be a consistent 8-4 team.

    • Well, if we were 6-6 we’d be going to the Holiday Bowl, which OSU has never been to. But, I understand your sentiment, since it’s just the Sun Bowl (i.e. 3rd place) with a different name.

    • I agree. They won 1 game this year when trailing and that was the Arizona State game and that was just 7 points . That shows a lack of leadership. We can only hope that there is stronger leadership next season and the Beavers play to their potential.

    • I agree! Basically giving the middle finger to Tinker Hatfield (Nike Executive and designer) was a huge mistake for the OSU football program. That single handedly falls on Decareless’s shoulders. You can still maintain a traditional look while being creative and thinking outside of the box! Our mascot needs to look more like a Beaver and less like a rat too. Get Benny Beaver out there more, get the face of OSU more publicity (hmm, hmm, Capitol One mascot challenge)! Why doesn’t Benny do crowd surfing? Why can’t the fans bring noise makers into Reser (they let all the yuck fans bring their stupid duck bills)? Reser should be allowed to ROCK, not suck! The entire “game day” experience needs improvement. Reser needs someone on the PA to lead the crowd with various cheers to get the fans involved more. Create a “Sports Marketing” major with the school of Business. Have the sports marketing majors work directly with the athletic department to inhance the OSU media/marketing programs and get OSU some more exposure!

      • I agree with you on most everything, but please no cheer-leading over the PA before plays, this isn’t Stanford, UCLA or Cal, there are actual football fans in Reser who know when to cheer.

Bring the old Benny Beaver back!

    • I agree. As posted elsewhere on this blog, I am glad this season is over, and that we are not wasting a month on a mediocre bowl game.

Full focus should be on recruiting between now and February 1. Go get us the next Stephen Paea and the next Andy Levitre (better yet, get two of each!) Don’t settle for anything less. Riley himself needs to be sitting in living rooms, talking to the parents, convincing them how much he wants their sons at OSU.

After that, focus hard to identify changes that need to be made in play-calling, personnel, and schemes. Also focus on changes that need to be made in spring and fall practice plans. And then implement those changes — knowing that failure to make changes will condemn the Beavers to another mediocre season, like the one we just experienced.

Do all this, and no one will be unhappy about missing a bowl game this year.

  16. Is Blackwell still interested in us? Also, I saw wee made Byron Moore’s final 7. I think he could start opposite Mitchell and have Anthony Watkins as a primary backup which would give us good depth at that position. However, looking at the other schools we’re competing with, I’m not sure we have a shot. We are the last visit on his schedule, so hopefully that helps our chances.

  17. Concerning marketing, we should give Nike a big fat middle finger. They make contracts with their member schools according to market and visibility. UO gets $2.9m annually on top of the gobs of free apparel. Here’s what we get:
    http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=media.oregonlive.com/pac10/other/Oregon-State-Nike-Multisport.pdf

Considering UO’s visibility is wholly due to Nike money, why would they disrespect OSU by giving so little in precisely the same market?

There’s another sports apparel company headquartered in Portland who has payed quite a bit more for sponsorship recently. You’ll notice that our contract with Nike expires on June 30, 2011.

We need to give Adidas a shot at

    • … helping us become a premiere athletic program, because Nike is just jerking us around. We would give Adidas a footprint in the Pac 12 North, and we could demand the same perks Nike gives the Ducks. Adidas would make a huge splash with the announcement as well. Taking a school in state would allow them to go head to head in the media with Nike for some time. The Civil War would be more than Nike U versus Nike Meh.

Speaking of Nike, those unis were horrible with all the stripes. I love the black matte helmets, but they need to lose the white. One orange stripe would be awesome. Lose the stripey arms and socks too. We looked like Pippi Longstocking out there.

    • Nike is doing really well lately. Since we are in the Nike headquarters state Mr. Knight should take us up as pet project #2. It helps if your rival isn’t too much weaker than you so really as long as they are confident they can beat us they might as well have us be stronger…more in the Florida/Florida St rivalry mold. He needs to alot 5 times more to OSU starting next year and then we can sign over our marketing and design to Tinker and Nike. Nike has the most creative stuff and is the clear #1 in marketing sports design. They also are #1 with recruits and we need to try keeping up with Oregon on the creativity and be much more successful in marketing the Oregon State brand.

      • I thought someone would say something about recruiting. I’m sure glad we’re getting hoops recruits away from Kansas, UCLA and Memphis. How’s it working in football versus Nebraska and UCLA?

If recruits want Nike gear and to play in Oregon, what school comes to mind?

  18. You mean “Beaver Biceps,” Dairy Farmers of Oregon, and a 2-minute breakdown of how to get the hell out of town as quickly as possible don’t do it for you for in-game marketing? I can’t imagine why.

  19. tweeeet Withholding of rumors has got to be a 25 yard penality.

Obviously angry needs some competition! What’s become of that SpudBeavs website that was going to startup in Idaho?

    COMPETITION, THAT’S WHATS NEEDED!!!

  20. I’m still stuck on the identity thing and how Nike has completely yanked OSU around for years.

I see no cons to opening up floor to new bids. If anything, other apparel companies should be able to recognize an under-served market at OSU. I feel so yanked by Nike’s marketing of the Beavs as giant-killers dressed in stripey clothes… while intentionally and directly marketing the Ducks as giants. And I’m not talking about the actual records. This plan was set in motion before the season began. What if both teams had excellent records going into the CW? What if the roles were reversed? We would still be the dopey stripey giant-killers, and they would still be the giants.

Imagine the coup a new marketing campaign would bring to Adidas or Under Armor. They could market new apparel and offer Beavs fans freedom from years of oppression. We could have apparel burning parties. If it has a swoosh, it goes on the burn pile. We could be the epitome of the Anti-Nike. We can knock them off their perch, and their daddy won’t be there to take credit for our success while demeaning us.

Under Armor has been spending money left and right in the last year as well. In fact, their newest deal puts them in the BCS Championship game against Nike U. They will also have a Pac 12 presence in Utah. But I would rather go with Adidas since their North American HQ is in Oregon. And Adidas seems to respect the schools like Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Nebraska when they say they just want their nice clean uni’s. They have enough design experience in the NFL alone.

I know our school is SOOO afraid to try anything new. But now is the time to do it. We’re sort of in a perfect storm situation. We will have the new hoops practice facility built soon. We will have the nicest new track facility built in several years. We’re getting a new revenue stream and new exposure with the new TV deal. And we will probably begin building the rest of Reser as the next apparel deal ends.

Oh, and we are poised as the perfect rivals for Nike U at a time when our exposure is indirectly at it’s highest thanks to Nike itself… and a stolen Lee Corso head.

    Stupid Ducks fans!

    • I was thinking about this topic the other day and the potential benefits of an Adidas deal (or other – hadn’t thought of Under Armour):

      1) Differentiation from UO (guess we’re doing that on the field);
      2) Fresh design input;
      3) Opportunity for cohesion amongst OSU team uniforms;

For #3, that opportunity exists for Nike or other as well.

Downsides: Cost(?). Isn’t Nike kind of prepared to do free work for OSU?

I didn’t mind the throwback look at CW. Kind of appreciated the look and colors more than I thought I would. My friend and Duck fan thought they were “pretty cool” and he as being sincere.

The ridiculous thing about the “GiantKillers” is that this team is nothing like that team – that team didn’t just beat a #1 team, they tied #2 purdue(?) and defeated another highly ranked team. If OSU had beaten TCU and tied or beat BSU, to go along with its victory over #9 UA, the label might have applied going into CW, otherwise, its silly given the 2010 squad’s inconsistency.

      • And no, Nike does nothing for free. They have their contracts with each school, and they supply and sponsor up to a certain dollar amount. Beyond that, the school has to pay for things.

They did give us new uni’s for free a couple years ago, but that was because they designed and made us wear the sports bras for a whole year.

  21. Swoosh Bags!!

On a different topic; I was scrolling through all the teams in bowls this year and noticed that out of the 70 teams, 11 have losing records in their own conference! How did they make up those losses to become bowl eligible, you guessed it, mostly FCS schools.

I propose that to be bowl eligible you must have at least a 50% record within your own conference for christsakes!!!
Just look at the TicketCity Bowl with TexTech and NWU, both are 3-5 in their own conference… how pathetic is that?

    • Every year there’s a new level of pathetic doled out by the NCAA and their lobbyists…I mean Corporate Sponsors. As a Husker fan as well, we’re absolutely disgusted by the slap in the face of having to face a 6-6 UW team in the Holiday Bowl, after already dismantling them earlier this very year. Will it happen again? Maybe not, but it should. It’s a joke. Oh, and did I mention UW will be coming to Lincoln next year?

        • 4 Meetings in 2 years. That would be something.

I just like the chance to beat up UW again, as Ed Cunningham will invariably shit himself. He should just wear the same tighty whities he wore when he shit himself on the pulpit for the NU-oSu game to save laundry.

    • Ummm… the… TicketCity… ummm… Bowl?

Be a uDrove Humanitarian and help Kraft Fight Hunger with a Poulan Weed Eater while at the Armed Forces Bowl sponsored by Bell Helicopter… no… the Military Bowl sponsored by Northrop Grumman… no… the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg Bowl.

  22. Haha! So it’s a battle between OSU and Middle Tennessee State for BLAKE HARRAH’S LOI? … God help us.

A zero star JUCO DE from southern california who runs a 4.8 40 that’s receiving no interest from D-I schools (except OSU). Why does Riley do this EVERY YEAR?! Where has recruiting players like this got us?

OSU doesn’t have the scholarships left to waste on players like this.

  23. How come OSU isn’t converting safeties to play linebacker, or linebackers to play DE? I know about Cameron Collins (what took so long?), he is the only one I can think of.
This used to be common for an OSU defense. OSU desperately needs S P E E D on its defense! They at one time were known as a fast, hard hitting, hit you in the mouth, flying to the ball, tenacious defense! Oh how I miss those days! What happened to “Linebacker U”?

    • I don’t see how he can enter the draft:

1.) He’s too small to be drafted high…
2.) …especially with his poor season this year.
3.) It would benefit him to play his Senior season due to #1 and #2.

If he does go to the NFL, I feel confident in Storm Woods and Terron Ward (I don’t know why, I just do).

      • Yes, there WILL be NFL next year.

There is no way those involved will want to lose BILLIONS by a lost season.

It’s the biggest money making sport in the United States.

I think it’s ridiculous to think there will be a lockout.

      • Sporting News had 1 of their experts placing him 23rd overall in the draft. In my opinion that’s just ridiculous. Things like that hurt players who have eligibility left and then they end getting drafted in late 2nd round to early 3rd round.

        • If Jacquizz gets drafted high, it will be due to his receiving ability.

The NFL is putting more value on RBs who can catch out of the backfield these days, and Jacquizz is an excellent receiver.

          • I can’t see Quizz getting past the middle to late second round with all his skills. He would be a flier at that point, but he would definitely go in the third round to some team who would utilize him incorrectly. Late round picks for coaches Belichek, Harbaugh, Tomlin, Caldwell or McCarthy can add quality depth and potential star power by adding Quizz at the end of the second round. The bonus for them is his football IQ and work ethic.

So teams that would target him as a third round pick at best need to re-evaluate what they want. There will be a lurker or two who realize this scenario and jump on him early to mid-second round–Carroll and Spagnuolo come to mind. Can you imagine Quizz being in a 1-2 situation with either Marshawn Lynch or Steven Jackson?

He would probably thrive on the team that will take LMJ and burn him out because he has none of the intangibles but a lot of speed… the Raiders.

Anyone running a West Coast offense would love to have him I’m sure. I think he would be a star in Andy Reid’s offense. They had another back from Villanova who measured 5’8, 195# and ran a 4.57 40 for his pro-day. William Green, TJ Duckett, DeShaun Foster, Clinton Portis, Maurice Morris and Ladell Betts all went in the first two rounds in 2002. And Lamar gordon went in the third round before Brian Westbrook was finally chosen by Philly with pick #91. The knock on Westbrook was size and durability. He already had a bum knee, and he avoided contact instead of driving forward. But he could catch, block and play in space. Portis is the only RB from 2002 to be a Pro-Bowler in his career… other than Westbrook.

          • I have always hoped the Patriots would draft both the brothers. They are basically Wes Welker and Danny Woodhead, but Quizz is better than Woodhead imo, and look at the success those two are having in Belichick’s system.

          • Don’t forget ball security either, teams have to be salivating over the fact the Quizz has never fumbled from a defender’s hit in his ENTIRE career. His one fumble of record was that crappy backwards pass from Canfield last year against BYU. Many a college star have seen their NFL career go up in flames because they could not hold on to the rock!

        • I agree. His brother will be back, I’m sure he wants to a better year next season and make a run at a doak walker award and heisman. he probably wants to make a run at a Pac-10 title. I’m sure he knows he won’t be a first round pick so he will be back I’m sure. It wouldn’t make much sense to leave.

          • I sure hope Riley isn’t dumb enough to have those guys starting on the line again. If Riley figures out they just are bad and starts more talented players on the line Quizz could have a great season if they’re starting though I don’t think Quizz would want to have another bad season.

          • Yeah, I mean if the o-line is incapable of improving than what is Jacquizz’s motivation? I am not sure records are as big a pull as getting some dollars in the bank. He has a child now, right? If I could put a couple million in the bank at 21 or come back and play for a 7-5 team in a no name bowl, I can’t say I would not go. I guess it all depends on this mock draft projection thing they are going to submit Portland Tribune has a small article from Eggers about the draft entry rumors.

  24. If Quizz comes back, he will be a lock to do somthing nobody has done in the history of the Pac 10 or any of its incarnations.

He will be the first person to rush for 1000 yards four times in the league. The closest to ever achieving this mark was Ken Simonton. He came up short by something like 30 yards his senior year.

    • The Beavs could be a good team next year back in the Rose Bowl race, especially if Quizz returns with James. Quizz has a chance with the same production he had this year to pass Simonton on the all-time OSU rushing list and also be the first in the Pac-10 to do the 1,000 yards all 4 years thing. I think he is better served leaving a stellar legacy at OSU and moving up his draft stock through an impressive senior season.

  25. OSU needs a defense like the 2000 Beaver/Fiesta Bowl defense! Remember DE’s Grant and Jackson and how quick they were? That team had some serious speed with attitude! I sure miss that OSU defense.
Will we ever see another BCS bowl?

  26. Are you guys forgetting that next year it will be the Pac-12? Ergo, all records start over. We won’t be using the prior Pac-10 records anymore. There will be time for new all time Pac-12 records. Meaning, Whoever has the best stats, is the best team in the Pac-12 all time this upcoming year.

  27. Could it be possible that OSU has faster LB’s on the 2nd or 3rd string defense? They just don’t have the experience or size to be 1st string? Also, where is the speed on defense needed the most at OSU, DL, LB, or the secondary?
…… I’m curious if anyone will comment?

    • What Unga brother is #41? That guys is very slow. Collins and Doctor on the outside next year will be faster than this year’s starters. Along with speed, we need more guys that can make plays in the open field. Both Anthony Watkins and Jordan Poyer showed the ability to make plays this year, hopefully they progress and play well next year.

I think OSU definitely needs more speed at linebacker. The speed of the secondary won’t matter as much until they start teaching the players to turn around when the ball is in the air. The PI on Doctor was the nail in the coffin last week, that isn’t a penalty if he simply turns around and looks for the ball.

    • There’s more LB speed in the wings, its just a matter of whether or not they’ll get the playing time. I think Doctor, Akuna, and Welch have the potential to be Doggett-type players, maybe not big, but quick, fast, and sure tackling. In retrospect, Doggett is one of my favorite players – and he scored td’s in two consecutive civil wars did he not?

I think the speed of the secondary is fine. The coaches need to consider a compromise in technique – couldn’t the osu secondary run with the man and begin looking for the ball say after 4 seconds? Establish a clock in their heads, make sure they stick with the receiver initially to get position, then look for the ball. The irritating thing about Doctor’s PI call in the CW is he was coached to play half-assed – he wasn’t trying to make a play, he was trying to prevent one. There’s a difference there that I think is important, and I think it has a direct effect on a player’s motivation, attitude, and confidence. We want to see the D have some swagger – not be cocky – but confident and aggressive. Against UO, OSU desperately needed (and will need next year) turnovers, and Doctor could have had one.

The DE speed also needs to improve. also. Granted Miller may have been quick (if ineffective), but nobody else seemed particularly special.

So in sum, more speed at DE and LB, secondary speed o.k., probably need a change in technique…my views anyhoo.

  28. And what’s the news on Elisinoa Aluesi? I see nobody is reporting any new offers to him. Are we talking grades? Jefferson ran off a good 10(?) wins this year before running into the buzz-saw that is Sherwood.

Speaking of Sherwood… check out Steven Long when you get the chance.

    • For scope, Noa Aluesi played at 6’7″, 255# this year. He runs a 4.6 40, and it shows on tape. He lined up at QB mostly in a triple option offense. But he also lined up at RB, WR and TE. As a result, he was named All-PIL as a ‘utility’ player.

He’s only been playing football for four years.

In his first year on defense, he lined up at LB and was named the PIL co-defensive POY.

If anyone thought Tuivailala was intriguing, what do they think of what Seumalo might be able to do with a freak like Aluesi?

        • At 255# he still looks skinny in pads. In person he’s a freak. He can easily add another 20-30 pounds and still look svelte.

It’s too bad if grades keep him from doing things in football. He could be really scary with some direction.

If Riley can talk him into working his grades and grey-shirting, then he could come in with Isaac Seumalo for the 2012 Class. I’m assuming Seumalo will come to us, but
