  1. looks like he has a little bit of a nasty streak. worrisome that nobody else is recruiting him, but the speed does look good, and I liked the determination on the punt return film. Really doubt we pick up any unexpected top recruits during the off season, so hopefully the unexpected hidden gem recruits are willing to come here.

  2. Don’t know if people already saw this but LMJ is declaring for the NFL draft and won’t be back next year. I guess that’s good news for Banker/us?

  3. “…He has zero stars and no D1 offers….”

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Same bs as the 1st or 2nd OL Riley signed up this year – – zero stars and zero offers.

Oh yeah that dude is one recruiting sumbitch.

  4. He looks good. He’s fast, tackles well, has good pursuit. Him not having an offer is curious. He looks solid, maybe his academics are the issue? Cause if his academics checked out I think he would have an offer by now.

    • My first thought was academics, too, because he looks fast/good enough to have an offer. It’s possible they discovered a hidden gem. Still, I’d like to see them recruiting A-list guys right now. It’s closing time. These guys are not winning any Rolaids relief awards any time soon…

  5. Those jersey tackles won’t work at the D1 level.
Also, why is he uncovered so much? I’d like to see film of him fighting off blocks, THEN making a tackle.
Speed appears good but then again when you’re unblocked….

    • He had a few plays where he fought off lineman and got a tackle. I think he would fit well in the 3-4 scheme with the way he can get off the ball. The Beavers getting a lot of 3-4 personnel. So, sticking with the 4-3 makes total sense.

    • Good point. I just rewatched more closely, and there are a lot of missed blocks. Really makes you wonder about the level of competition. The only block he sheds is at the 39 second mark. It’s a nice play and all, but definitely not enough to draw conclusions either way. I’d like to take back my comment that he sheds blocks well. Should have written “he shed one block well, but mostly ran past/around guys who missed their blocks.”…

      • Level of competition is high. His team is not very good and so they do not get scouted as closely as the other teams. If you are a late bloomer or miss the camp circuit, it is easy to get missed altogether. Would OSU reject Cody Hoffman today because he had no stars?

  6. It be nice if an objective recruiting service offered summary film that showed “highlights” and “lowlights” and was upfront about the context of the competition level.

If I had $25K laying around, I could probably get that, even if a season too late.

    • Doesn’t this already exist? I mean I have no first hand knowledge myself but when schools throw around $25k at a time I would think this need would already be filled. Are you sure we’re just not privy to it because we’re not the ones paying the bills?
If no such service exists then yes, let’s start a business!

  7. Here’s some more film.

I like the play at the 51 second mark. That’s a play the current LBs can’t make. Speed listed at 4.6, but he looks faster. He plays with passion and violence, which is refreshing to see. I actually like his film better than the Fabio looking guy (Cowdin?). That guy looked…”lumbering”…

Mafi looks better suited for a 3-4 where he can run around and blitz recklessly. Given the Beavers DT situation and plethora of LBs, a 3-4 makes a whole lot of sense.

  8. He sure likes to spin around on the tackles instead of get in front of, and stand up the ball carrier…his approach and technique take him around the ball carrier….not likely to be effective technique against DI RB’s…Quizz or LMJ would shed him and pick up yards after contact.

Why not extend an offer to walk on?!?

  9. Hmm…it would appear he is 3 to play 3 and he’s obviously fast, which is nice. I guess this means we didn’t get Cowdin?

I agree, the recruiting lately (last 2 years) appears to be geared toward going 3-4 defense a lot more often.

  10. Overall I like this commitment, I would prefer they actually got some more highly rated guys but this may actually be a gem. Btw, does anyone know about Banks? What is the likelihood he actually chooses the Beavs? OSU needs DT’s BAD

  11. The play at the 20 sec mark in the 2nd video would’ve drawn a helmet to helmet flag. Also in the first video notice that the first play he drew a flag too. Regardless, as others have stated, I like his violence.
Also JC transfers are usually more up to speed on the high school to college transition.

  12. It is like the coaches do the opposite of what the fans want out of spite. We want a young athletic LB so they play Pankey. All the fans want a JC DT so what do we do? Get a JC LB.

    • Funny. It makes me wonder what the team’s record would be if they did everything we write about here, passed on the recruits we don’t like, etc.

I honestly think we collectively know more than the coaches. People will scoff, but the record is beginning to back up that claim. Just go through the old posts if you don’t believe me. There’s a reason I archive—I grade myself as harshly as the coaches. No better way to grade than revisiting old talking points and seeing who was right. It’ll be fascinating to do a few years from now when we can really dig in and see where it all went wrong (or hopefully turned around).

      • We only have a snapshot about what is going on at any one time. Coaches would be fools to tell the genral public (and the competition) who all they are after. There is a huge danger in thinking that we can scout thru video, that we can just take the measureables and stars as gospel. It takes boots on the ground and lots of one on one contact. We were all fooled before 911 thinking that electronic intelligence was all we needed. What happens to the kid outside the highlight reel? How many plays does he take off? What does he do in the fourth quarter? Relying on these clips and internet gossip is not what winners and survivors do. This kid in the short video clips does a lot of shirt grabbing but is a playmaker for sure. It would be nice to know how he faired against CCSF, Butte and Fresno…three of the top teams in the country that he played against.

  13. I don’t know after watching those videos he doesn’t seem like he squares up the ball carrier very well. He’s definitely faster and more violent than what we’ve seen the last couple years on the Beavs, but I agree with what ObjCritic said above in that he would have a heck of a time trying to bring down Pac 12 RBs like Quizz or LMJ with that kind of tackling technique.
