Talking about the signees is interesting, and we have the big board. I just wish they would have been prepared enough to add names, map locations and profiles on the segments as you scroll down.
Someone is listening. Kudos to the athletic department, this presentation is really nice and they’ve had me streaming the coverage all morning. Really enjoy the coaches interviews. Quality stuff.
Also I know there has been some worry about if Kevin Peko would qualify academically, but yesterday mama machado said that if we was in danger if not qualifying, they would have pulled the offer like they did with Preston and the wide out, blanking on the name, because they have been burned before. So that’s pretty promising.
Banker saw what his madness in the nickel and dime did last year, so this year he said “fuck it” and decided to just go with a 5-6 defense from now on.
Bierria and Moore will go elsewhere. I expected that. No real surprises this time around. Sucks not getting Bierria or Moore, but not losing anyone is great to know. Really like this class.
The impression I was getting was the NFL’s use of the read option was more influential in getting the staff to take notice, which makes sense if you think about it. If you’re trying to get talented kids to come to your school, you probably need to convince them that the style you’re playing will benefit them in the NFL. A few years ago, the option QB’s weren’t getting drafted. Now they are, so things are changing and Riley is taking notice. Seems slow when compared to other college teams, but not when you compare them to NFL teams.
Was listening to Joe Montana on the Herd the other morning. His take on the running QB was it might be a useful tool in spurts, but you can’t get away with consistently running your QB like he’s a 2nd RB because of fatigue and the risk of injury. He pointed out how Frank Gore during the Superbowl would break a decent run, and then tap his helmet and ask out to catch his breath before coming back in again. With the QB, you can’t afford to have them sit out plays here or there to catch their breath because they need to be ready to go on the next play every time. It’s just not a sustainable plan over the course of a full game, let alone season.
Also, since the QB becomes a ball carrier, the rules don’t protect them like they do when they’re passing.
Another thing to consider is that players get old. And old means they slow down and it takes longer to heal week to week. Pocket QB’s talk about how they were good to go on Monday when they were young, sat in the cold tub until Tuesday as they approached 30 and waited until Thursday to practice when they were 30-something. That is accelerated when the QB wears two hats.
And it looks like the “unblocked” D-linemen are going to be instructed to just maul anyone and everyone at the mesh point to counter the read option. So now you have to add several hits even a scrambler like a Steve Young never took in a traditional set.
Add to that the fact that any NFL QB has to be much more precise than they are in college since that offense can’t use half their formations in the NFL and DB’s are bigger, faster and smarter than your average college back.
To sustain a read option at a high rate of success in the NFL, you’re going to have to have two RGIII’s or Kaepernick’s on your team at all times. And you’re going to have to dispose of them after four or so years.
I’m willing to bet that Chipster will set up an offense much like Belichick runs at New England, which someone once told me looks like OSU’s offense run at Nikegon speeds.
Harlow is right. After this next year, at least 3 spots (Phillips, Andrews, Enger) will be up for grabs.
He’s smart to come in early. He’ll have to pack on about 30 pounds from his listed weight of 260 if he’s looking to play early. Getting into a college lifting program will help him get there faster.
Good pickup. Another kid with an NFL dad. If he gets anywhere near what his Dad accompished, he’ll have a great career.
Harlow was the first guy we offered, up to 275 and working on his arms in the gym. High expectations. Looking at OT for him now, but will learn other positions as well. According to Coach Cav
Josh Mitchell backup Center, Grant Bays Guard, Gavin Andrews OT (needs to get serious about grinding, grow up and mature, play within his body and not just rely on gifted talents)

Yes, I do deny it! Like I denied that the spread would fade away in a few years, and that having a lot of uniforms doesn’t impress kids because they like tradition more. You can follow, or you can break away and lead!
On a more serous note: Nice class fellas. Whatever switch you all flipped in recruiting, it is working! Kudos.

NOLA 3-star LB Edward Williams is headed to #TexasTech. New #RedRaiders’ staff is turning heads in their short time in Lubbock #RivalsNSD
so I am not sure what she is saying, or if it is not a done deal.
He’s at his school signing ceremony, and is sitting with 3 Fedex packets in front of him looking stressed. Can’t decide where to go. Has been sitting starring at them for like half an hour.
ESPN just ran their rankings of the P-12 and OSU sits at #9. This seems like a low rating considering how many good players we have this year. We always out perform the recruiting rankings so I believe that we are improving with this class.
Unfortunately, UCLA and UW are cleaning up as predicted by early commits. UW did lose one 4* to TAMU.
If UCLA and UW rebound in performance, it surely improve the stature of the P-12 but make a Rose Bowl significantly tougher.
USC loses 4* to Oregon, they seem to get in Kiffen’s hair every year, too funny.
USC ranked #2 in P-12 with only 12 commits.
This is actually right where the Beavs will likely end up, 8th is where they are ranked in Rivals and Scout. Now you could rank the class slightly higher maybe 7th,depending how the day shakes out, based on the avg star ranking. Class size can effect the ranking, for example, Utah has a very big class (lots of grayshirts and placing guys in JC) and their avg star rating is lower (albeit not by much) than OSU.
Take out 2010 and 2011 and OSU has performed better than both schools, so don’t read too much into the rankings as the team is getting guys that they need to fit their scheme that are solid performers and sound really really happy to be coming here.
I remember when Zimmerman and his teammake (forgot his name) signed a few years ago in Oklahoma, they weren’t able to get to a fax machine because their school was shut down due to bad weather or something, but they got their LOIs in, just later. Glad Hunt’s a Beav!
Great job by the football staff and Mike Parker today. MP would probably like to keep it going into the evening given he’s suppose to do basketball tonight.
Figured Okankwo was only offered after losing out on LJ Moore but it could be because of Hunt. Okankwo seems like he literally switched last night.
I watched his film on youtube. Seems like a ball hawk. Needs to get better at tackling. Seems he more or less just got in the way than actually wrapping up. Not too much of a concern because of the much improved tackling of the CBs this year under Perry. Seemed like at least once a game, Poyer or Reynolds really stuck somebody.
Agreed! Legit Pac 12 talent throughout the class instead of a large portion of the class being made up of 2*s and walk ons as we’ve had in the past. Riley’s last three classes have all been pretty solid.
Yesssssssssss!!!!! If we can manage a couple more big time recruits next year, and so on, should be getting “great” teams, instead of just “good” enough to get us over the hump to the Rose Bowl.
Love the improvements to the D line and CBs; should be effective synergy of sacks, INTs.
After an alarmingly SLOW start, the OSU staff has done very well. Apparent lack of LB depth only potential major shortcoming. Hopefully Bray can mitigate with continued coaching and development.
Is there a single facet of the team that you expect to be worse next year than this past year? I expect a drop off in production from our wideouts, but am optimistic the production will be made up for in developing TEs, improved pass protection, and an improved running attack. Other than wideout, I don’t see an area where I expect regression.
If these JUCO guys pan out on the D-Line (and in Peko’s case, don’t pull a Simi Kuli) and Nelson is as good as advertised, I am very bullish on our defense next year.
Gillmore, Mullaney, and Bolden will help offset loss of Wheaton. They should get progressively better thru the season, and downright dangerous towards the back end of the season.
I wouldn’t call the WR production a regression because other postions are stepping up. Most of the WR’s should have better years than last year. Cooks will be tough to gauge because other teams are going to key on him now. Hopefully during the offseason, he works to get even better. I’ve said before that he’s got a good chance ot become the best WR in OSU history.
Mullaney should have a decent year. Something like 600-700 yards. Cummings should be able to take on a bigger role. And Hatfield and Singler should see the field a bit more. Not sure what will happen to Gwachum. Appears he’s been passed on the depth chart. And don’t rule out Gilmore making some kind of impact.
Our WR’s, especially Wheaton really disappeared in the last two games of the year (no, I don’t count Nichols as a game).. Was really disappointed in his CW and Alamo bowl efforts.
I still think we could see a drop off at CB and DT. Sure the guys coming in are promising but that doesn’t always translate in college. Also I think we could see a drop off at LB… depth is still a concern and last year we were lucky to have Doctor and DJ healthy for the most part.
OSU has to build longer term relationships to secure commitments,. Next year, they have a genuine shot at 7-0, and can leverage that early season success to build the foundations of those long term relationships.
Recruiting is blown way out of proportion. I did just fine with a few guys that could and run a few guys that could catch and 10-12 fat boys to get in the way. I could usually round up a “recruiting class” with an open house and a few pizzas. JB

Today’s point of emphasis: If BDC wanders in, look busy, no standing around!!
Rumor: a listener said that Riley referred to Williams and said he wants to come OSU, but parents want him to stay close to home. If true we need to get down there and talk with the parents, and get them the pac12 network!
It was in an interview with Canzano that Riley was asked if he had ever heard anything like the story I linked above about the kid’s mom running off with his LOI.
Riley answered that he had a kid who wanted to go to OSU, but his parents wanted him to go to TT. So he just sat there while he was supposed to be signing his LOI.
No names other than the schools were mentioned… Nudge, nudge, wink, wink… know what I mean?
Poor kid. That explains his look in the pic above.
Looks like it may have been a numbers game. ASU signed 29. Also, only ESPN is reporting that Taylor had an offer from ASU. Scout and Rivals don’t show an offer listed. So this also may be his best offer.
Very sure that when you are a dual sport athlete and one is football, you are on scholarship for football. It’s to prevent stashing extra players in other sports. Ex. Jarmon will play both baseball and football but will only count for football for a scholarship.
Taylor’s facebook page says he’s signing tomorrow, but doesn’t say which school. I found a post on another blog where the blogger had seen a story about Tatum tonight on CSN.
“So apparently a couple days ago the Beavs pulled their offer to Tatum because of a numbers issue… Then Riley called Tatum’s mom this morning and said they were sending an LOI for Tatum that they could make it work. So Taylor’s mom gets the LOI and gets in the car to go give it to Taylor but he was on a school field trip today so she couldn’t even give it to him…
They didn’t say whether he was going to send it to OSU or not or sure, but they never even mentioned ASU in the story. Guess we will find out for sure tomorrow! ”
So hopefully this means Taylor wants to be a 2 sport athlete. Could be a bigger gain for the track team than football even, but nice to know we have a guy we can develop into a speed weapon down the road if he commits to OSU
Am I the only one who feels underwhelmed with this class? Maybe because we didn’t sign any real high profile offensive players. Interesting that Sonny Dykes is only on Cal ‘s staff for 2 months and he’s able to reel in a Top 25 class.
So it looks like there’s 16 seniors graduating. How many defections we’re there / how many more guys can they sign?
Regarding lb’s: there’s several guys with the size and athletisim to step into the mix next year with with Akuna, James, Williams, Johnson, and skotte. Wasn’t the staff high on saulo too? Maybe we’re not in as bad of shape as most are projecting. I imagine it’ll be a big help to actually bray out on the recruiting trail now that he’s a full time coach. Time to start working on 2014.
Akuna is slow. Unless he starts bathing in deer antler spray, I doubt he ever gets on the field other than special teams. Perhaps they try to bulk him up to play DE.
Or he needs to shed at least 20pds. Kid bulked up to much. He was listed@210 in hs. Very fast and quick. Now he’s listed at 245 and two or three steps slower.
video of Williams being interviewed yesterday after his signing ceremony yesterday that he backed out from. The nerves are pretty apparent, feel bad for the kid. Hopefully he ends up with the best situation for himself.
Still a head scratcher. Why go from a PAC 12 school to Sack State? First Katz, then Tyner, now this. That was costly loss. Hurts to lose an experienced lineman, even if he remained a backup.
He would have been a walk-on playing on the scout team this year. Barring armageddon, he wouldn’t have seen the field. He went somewhere he has a chance to play, and he gets his school paid for.
C’mon Tatum! Would love to see him suiting up for both track and football at OSU. Taylor and Oregon State are a perfect fit. With some quality speedsters this team will keep competing for Rose Bowls. :)
Went to the Recruiting dinner last night great night.
My buddy ran into Coach Bray, who was having a few pops. He asked him the million dollar question, who starts at MLB next season? Bray says SKotte is the starter, however he “needs” somebody behind him to push him. Apparently the depth isn’t there.
Then he asked him whether or not we will get Williams, and he said we got a real good chance. Edward told Bray five times he wants to come here, and Bray asked “are you verballing?” Williams would respond “I want to come here” But his mom wants him closer to home and that it is really between Miami and us, because Texas Tech really pissed the mom and Edward off. Riley has been in contact with the mom and is trying to ease her concerns, about her son coming here.
Of course you asked him about “hypothetical MLB prospect A,” and that’s how he answered.
Right?
I can fully understand Williams’ feelings based on what I’ve heard of his story. He really doesn’t want to stay at home because he wants to get out and see the world like any kid his age. But he and his family also suffered through Katrina and its after-effects. I think they were homeless for a time. He saw the struggles of the city coming back from that disaster. He just wants to go somewhere he can wake up in the morning and hear nothing but birds chirping. He’s tired of the city right now.
Miami is tempting because of its history. But it’s still a city with all the distractions he’s trying to escape. I would love to have him here. But I can’t argue with the academics at either Miami or Tulane. I would have to say those two along with Emory and GaTech are the best schools in the Deep South.
“Hayden Craig, a 6-5, 245-pound tight end who prepped at Dayton before winding up in Montana, has transferred to OSU as a walk-on. He is in school and will sit out next season with what Riley hopes is three years of eligibility beginning in 2014.”
Why does he have to sit out? I guess I thought if you went into a different division you didn’t need to.
When I first read about him I thought he was from Dayton, Montana, which has a population of 100 in the winter (more in the summer where it is a launching spot for boaters going to Wild Horse Island.) I thought, good god, that is really a find. lol
Tatum Taylor announcement news hasn’t come through yet, but he did change his Facebook profile pic from a track picture to a football picture about 30 minutes ago.
OT, but the other day I was thinking with Cooks, Gillmore, and the incoming speed of Bolden and hopefully including Taylor, it’d be fun to see some run-n-shoot formations with Chris Brown as the single back with the speed to take advantage of the line and defender spacing. Quick throws, keep it simple for the QB.
I’m not saying all the time, I just wish that sometimes Riley et al would vary the form and pace of their methodical approach and one way to do that is to put more fast skill players out there then can be consistently defended. The line is improving, and would need to do its job; the qb has to get rid of the ball quickly, and the WB and receivers need to be seeing the same thing. I’d also like to seem them sometimes put in two tight ends and just run the ball to death; so I’m probably asking for way too much diversity.
Back to the thread’s topic…this class would be quite remarkable if Taylor and Williams sign.
Williams wants to go to OSU, but his parents won’t let him, wanting him to go to Tulane.
Williams wants to go to TT, but his parents won’t let him, wanting him to go to Tulane.
Williams was going to go to TT, but an 11th hour Miami offer forced him to delay his decision.
All the different stories about this two star kid caught the attention of Bob Stoops, and he saw the same tape we’ve all been watching for over a year… thinking to himself, “Self, how is it this kid is only a two star prospect?”

Talking about the signees is interesting, and we have the big board. I just wish they would have been prepared enough to add names, map locations and profiles on the segments as you scroll down.
Baby steps….
One thing I’ll say is today’s webcast is better than a full day of shaky fax machine footage.
Whoa! No more baby steps.
I just scrolled down for the first time, and everything I ever wanted is there.
This is really nicely done.

This is an awesome upgrade.

He’s a tackling machine.
Angry, you’ll love this one, Bray says that with the departure of RR it “really opens up 3 positions”. Are you all still bullish on Bray?
Bray is so amazing that RR is now a legendary Oregon State linebacker just by virtue of Bray’s comments today.
Well, it does. He backed up 3 spots last year.
Hopefully the impact Bray makes is with Joshua Williams, Shaydon Akuna, Jabral Johnson and Jaswha James. These guys need to step it up if they don’t want to get passed on the depth chart.

Wonder who that may be? Hope that she isn’t saying this to attract people to the rivals website.
Folks are hinting that it’s Edward Williams. Texas Tech, Miami or Oregon State.

Great sweater!
He looks like he’s about to pee himself.
Hope so, we really need him. I think he goes TTech though.

Where is Hunt? That could be REAL bad if we lost him.
Has a ceremony setup at his school. He’ll should be a beav.
I remember when Zimmerman and his teammake (forgot his name) signed a few years ago in Oklahoma, they weren’t able to get to a fax machine because their school was shut down due to bad weather or something, but they got their LOIs in, just later. Glad Hunt’s a Beav!
is Hunt official?
Banker on Peko, “he has some work to do, but we have a good guy down in Cerritos CC to help him. He should be done in June”
Oh no, the kiss of death.
If Peko needs a tutor to get him out of a JC, you have to wonder how long he will be eligible at OSU. Could be one and done.
Or none and done.
Is that a putdown of JCs in general? I hope not.
Per twitter:
Hunt is on his way to sign (texted to Machado)
Williams will not sign today. Has more thinking to do and all 3 schools still in play.
He forgot his name LOL.
@RivalsJason
Word is now NOLA 3-star Edward Williams has not decided and is looking at #Miami #OregonState and #TexasTech #RivalsNSD

Bummer. Was hoping for a LOI day gift.

Strange that Lawrence Mattison isn’t on the big board yet. He tweeted it out about an hour ago that he’s already signed, and sent this pic out.

well, he just tweeted that he’s just sent the fax to Coach Brennan right now, so any moment now.
Good looking football player. Hope he’s not the next McCants.
Wonder what position Corey Lawrence winds up at. I’m thinking a Lawson type hybrid…returner and some wr maybe.
Great job by the football staff and Mike Parker today. MP would probably like to keep it going into the evening given he’s suppose to do basketball tonight.
Gwachum needs to bulk up 20lbs and move to TE. He’ll never play at WR with Mullaney blossoming and now this class…
Ugh, he had so much potential!
How about using his athleticism and excellent ability to knock down passes on special teams as a Kick Blocker!
He’s never going to play at TE with those stone hands.

@LJGinger
Could Nebraska be back into the Dashon Hunt sweepstakes? Still hasn’t signed his NLI wit the Beavs…
@AnnieMPeterson
Still awaiting word on Beavers verbal commit CB Dashon Hunt.
@RipCityRiot
Annnnd the drama starts. Dashon Hunt, 4 star CB keeping OSU coaches in limbo after a verbal commit.
Corey Lawrence reminds me of Randall Cobb a bit.
Charles Okonkwo has been added to the board
Sucks they have to leave this production to broadcast our atrocious hoops.
Steven Nelson, “Maybe just one year, maybe” Looking to go straight to the NFL. He is a punt returner as well, and practiced punt returns today.
He has a wife and kids who he had to leave behind to move to Corvallis. Think he’s pretty driven to turn this opportunity into an NFL career ASAP.
Reality will set in when Cooks blows him up in the spring.
Mattison is in.

Must not be that good of a running back if he couldn’t keep up with his mom……..or maybe he just come from good genes.
Can’t blame the mom. I wouldn’t let my kid play for Butthead either.
Pretty much everyone signed now except Hunt.
Seems like we have this problem every year with the 4-stars
Hunt is in.
YES! I was getting worried…solid class, Beavers!
Hunt is in!
Thank God. And thank Riley. Great class and he and his staff deserve credit.

Now we just need Williams to make this class great. LB is the one weak position.
As you say, TEs and other units will be improved.
I have a feeling we’ll get another LB one way or another before all is said and done.
If it’s Edward Williams, great…if it’s a late signing JUCO LB…that could be okay too.
OSU has to build longer term relationships to secure commitments,. Next year, they have a genuine shot at 7-0, and can leverage that early season success to build the foundations of those long term relationships.
Next focus, LB’s, HS D lineman, more O linemen?
Recruiting is blown way out of proportion. I did just fine with a few guys that could and run a few guys that could catch and 10-12 fat boys to get in the way. I could usually round up a “recruiting class” with an open house and a few pizzas. JB
I still remember your open tryouts in the quad. That was pretty funny.

Poor kid. That explains his look in the pic above.
any more commitments?
Eggers says:

kerry eggers @kerryeggers
Oregon State has 23 signees, hopes for 3 more — WR Tatum Taylor and DL Charles Tua’au and Fred Lauina. All have indicated they will sign
Eggers also reported that no verbals flipped. Interesting tidbit.
Probably the exception to the rule but kudos to the staff for accomplishing a rare feat in today’s recruiting cycle.
Wow, Taylor?
I’m surprised.
Beavs – 8.5 132.5 O/U tonight
Big number for a 1-8 team…Utah must play slow for that total.
Mike Riley ?@Coach_Riley
Fred Lauina, welcome to #BeaverNation!!! #FutureBeavs13
tatum taylor is signing?
Looks like it may have been a numbers game. ASU signed 29. Also, only ESPN is reporting that Taylor had an offer from ASU. Scout and Rivals don’t show an offer listed. So this also may be his best offer.
I think that maybe because his offer is for Track and not football. He could play football but his schollie would count against the track team budget.
Very sure that when you are a dual sport athlete and one is football, you are on scholarship for football. It’s to prevent stashing extra players in other sports. Ex. Jarmon will play both baseball and football but will only count for football for a scholarship.
Yes, higher revenue sport (nationally) gets the burden.
^^^^^^^^correct
track scholarship is correct
Yeah, on pac12 network signing day show, Dykes said he was surprised how well Cal recruits itself. You can fall outta bed with a top 30 class.
Charles Tua’au is in, flipping from Hawaii. Grades may still be some work though.
You’re one of four people who is underwhelmed. Look more at the numbers and there’s only a small difference between Cal’s class and the Beavs.
Fair enough. However, I expected a little better based on the year we had. Cal was a train-wreck, not to mention bringing on a new coach.
Looks like we got another commit from Charlie Tua’au-Juco DE who was previously a Hawaii commit. 2 flips in our favor today, not bad.
Travis Rice ?@BlitzTRice
Latest Beaver commit DE Charlie Tua’au Fr. Highlight Film (Riverside CC) >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKXLlO0C5ow …
He has a Nebraska offer…not bad.
Scout also has USC as another offer.
I think Wynn should do the same. Drop 20# and play linebacker.
Nobody poached. Props to the coaching staff.

Tatum Taylor plans to sign Thursday according to his Facebook. #RivalsNSD
I couldn’t find a Facebook page to confirm if Thursday is today or another time.
video of Williams being interviewed yesterday after his signing ceremony yesterday that he backed out from. The nerves are pretty apparent, feel bad for the kid. Hopefully he ends up with the best situation for himself.

Lindsay Schnell is saying Muir has decided to transfer to OSU, but will have to sit out a year.
Also, saw that Tatum Taylor will make his decision today from his highschool at 1:00
I don’t have a source on the Muir thing. Didn’t we hear yesterday he was going to Baylor because he had a relative get offered also?
Yeah, allegedly he’s going to Baylor as a package deal with his brother who would be part of the 2014 class.
Derek Neilsen going to Sac State? What’s that about?
He gets a full ride there… probably gets to start too.
WTF? Wasn’t he in the running to be the starting RT?
No.
Still a head scratcher. Why go from a PAC 12 school to Sack State? First Katz, then Tyner, now this. That was costly loss. Hurts to lose an experienced lineman, even if he remained a backup.
Backup?
He would have been a walk-on playing on the scout team this year. Barring armageddon, he wouldn’t have seen the field. He went somewhere he has a chance to play, and he gets his school paid for.
What happened with Taylor?
Read that he postponed again till tomorrow morning at 8:AM
C’mon Tatum! Would love to see him suiting up for both track and football at OSU. Taylor and Oregon State are a perfect fit. With some quality speedsters this team will keep competing for Rose Bowls. :)
He is evaluating both schools rebranding efforts. By far the most important factor when selecting a college.
Question: is “intenet” when you send your letter of intent via the internet?
;)
I was wondering who would touch the third rail first….well-played WFO
Riley has been in contact with the mom and is trying to ease her concerns, about her son coming here.
oh and that Mom really wants him at Tulane, but he wants to get out of that “shitty” area they live in.
TT thinks the same thing OSU does:

Harlow, Greer, and Hunt could compete early. Rosa reinstated. Kristick and Dorian Smith being considered for grad spots. Matt Riley going to Texas.
When I first read about him I thought he was from Dayton, Montana, which has a population of 100 in the winter (more in the summer where it is a launching spot for boaters going to Wild Horse Island.) I thought, good god, that is really a find. lol
Tatum Taylor announcement news hasn’t come through yet, but he did change his Facebook profile pic from a track picture to a football picture about 30 minutes ago.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200410921411708&set=a.1579515123893.2087243.1116115969&type=1&theater
As if it couldn’t get any more complex.
Bob Stoops is now going after Williams.
I’m going to hazard a guess and say he won’t end up in Corvallis.
Just like the TV commercial. “Hello.”
So let’s recap all the stories.
