Interesting Recruiting Email this Morning

This guy put together some good data on recruiting, in general, but also specifically about the Beavs. Give it a read.  If you have any specific questions, I believe the content creator will show up and answer anything. At the end is a link to the blog post. The links to the interactive map crashed my browser, so just a head’s up there, but I think it’s because it’s a large file and data set.

Good morning,

Hope you’re doing well. I’m a data and content manager here at Rukkus, we’re a secondary ticket marketplace for sports and concerts.

I took the time to put together an analysis of all 128 FBS rosters for the 2016 season using Google Maps to place each player (more than 13,000 in total) in their hometown and it created a very interesting visual of the college football landscape, especially when it comes to Oregon State, who has the 4th broadest recruiting reach in CFB.

You can check out a larger interactive version of the gif above here that allows for zooming and sorting by conference.

We hear about teams recruiting talent from local hot beds but I was curious to see what teams expand their radius of recruitment to find players further from campus. The results proved to be pretty eye opening:

  • The average Pac 12 recruit comes from 836 miles away, almost double that of any other Power 5 conference
  • The average distance from hometown to school is 128 miles for USF players, lowest in CFB
  • The average distance from hometown to school is 1,881 miles for Hawaii players, highest in CFB (Stanford has the highest average of any mainland school at 1,243 miles)
  • The average FBS player hails from 446 miles away from their school
  • More than a third of all FBS players come from either Texas, Florida, or California and Vermont is the only state without an FBS homegrown player

I compiled a few more heat maps and charts that highlight popular recruitment regions and a breakdown of the states that players come from and can share high res images or embeds for those.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and I’d also be happy to send over some more specific data for another team or conference if you’re interested. Here is a link to the post and one to just the interactive map.

  1. Not surprising at all. Recruiting where the talent is. The Pacific NW only has so much D1 talent.

California, Texas and Florida are #1, 2 and 3 in total population in the US.

The lowest PAC12 school is UCLA at #46.
11 of the top 24 are PAC12 schools.
    Oregon right behind the Beavs.

    • But what’s that mean for OSU with a limited recruiting budget?

They probably have one of the lowest budgets, yet the most travel…

And interesting side graph would be that of recruiting budgets per distance traveled. Like mile traveled per dollar spent. Expend it to per target landed.

      • I think that’s where the donor provided private jet comes into play. I’ve been told they are given access to a jet belonging to some donors involved in the local timber industry.

        • Also, I don’t think it’s really accurate when they show Nick Porebski as being recruited from Australia. He was already at Snow Community College in Utah when we started recruiting him. That one player alone really helps skew our results compared to most other teams but it’s not like we were flying to Australia to visit him

          • Yeah, but you can’t expect someone ranking 1400 players to know that.
It would be hilarious if the Beavs were flying to Australia to recruit a punter. Leave it to the Beavs to do that one day.

        • Oops, good to see somebody else mentioned this. I referenced it below.

Mike Riley refused that jet, I wonder what else he refeused? Also, I wonder if the budget has gone up with a completely new regime. The printed material looks better than in years past, maybe we’ve upped the game in other ways.

      • I’m not sure if this data will have any real correlation with recruiting budgets.

To me it seems like a fun figure. Not something you could really make a real conclusion from.

Like a guy who bats .350 against right handers, outdoors on Wednesdays. Fun fact, but does it mean a whole lot, no.

        • Yeah I don’t know if the data means a whole lot, but it’s a lot of work by this guy and pretty interesting, at least to provoke thought.

My #1 thought after looking it over was that I wondered who spent the most per recruit.

And if there should be a National discussion about that rather than “pay for play”. So many schools are at disadvantage in recruiting that something must change for the health of the sport. It’s really in bad shape under the hood.

There are so many disadvantaged teams that they could join forces to really fuck things up for the 10 schools that recruit.

        • Yeah I don’t know if the data means a whole lot, but it’s a lot of work by this guy and pretty interesting, at least to provoke thought.

          • At least our baseball stadium is awesome (well, it was before they put in that turf). It’s still nice, though.

The basketball and football buildings are a piecemeal mess.

          • Gill with some refreshing is good place to watch bball. Has a nice old school feel to it. Fans right on top of the action. Good sight lines from every level.

I’ve said in the past, it would be nice if the seats and bleachers were one color of orange. Change out the lights to LED lights instead of drop lights.

            Change nothing structurally.

      • Have we seen what the budget is since Andersen took over? I know it was low under RIley but part of that was definitely his choice. For example, the refusing to use an offered donation of free Lear Jet trips for recruiting. Who knows what else he cheaped out on, I could see the recruiting budget being much higher now.

    • “The expectations of national titles have faded. Now, the fans who keep packing Memorial Stadium hope for a team that doesn’t embarrass them further.”

Nice to see MR raising the bar in Lincoln.

      • If that’s a direct quote from MR, then he won’t last long there and I think fans know this to be true. MR will retire from head coaching at Nebraska and might be a QB/Offensive Coordinator somewhere possibly like Dennis Erikson for Utah.

  2. My brother is always calling or emailing me about how well Riley is recruiting there.
My stock answer is….”the next coach will really appreciate that.”

  3. Part of the increased reach was caused by Riley getting out recruited by the new aggressive coaches in the PAC in his traditional areas in CA. When he signed a kid from Iowa that was not recruited by the two Power 5 instate schools, it was not a good sign. Increased reach= increased desperation for Riley.

  4. My son’s third grade football team practices by Bethel High School – home field for several local teams including Graham Kapowsin who was also practicing last night. Watched this kid from GK bulldoze the entire half of the defensive line play after play after play. Made a comment about it to the guy next to me who though I was joking about not knowing who it was….Foster Sarrel, No. 1 OT and No. 2 overall recruit in the nation.

He then switched over to DE where he was chasing RB’s down on sweeps and tossing them to the ground. Unreal at 6′-6″ and 315 lbs….

The QB wasn’t too shabby either…guess he holds a number of D1 offers as a sophomore. I might try to catch a game or two this fall.

    • Speaking of Mike Riley recruiting, Nebraska is the only “Official” visit Foster Sarell has lined up right now. Hope the Fozz Bear likes bear crawls

      • FWIW Here’s what’s being said on 24/7

        http://247sports.com/Article/Foster-Sarell-schedules-official-visits-to-Nebraska-and-Notre-Da-46904758

No. 1 recruit Sarell has two officials scheduled

The No. 1 recruit in the country according to 247Sports in Graham (Wash.) Kapowsin five-star Foster Sarell has scheduled an official visit to Nebraska for Sept. 3, his mother Pam confirmed with 247Sports.

Sarell is also locked in for an official to Notre Dame for the Stanford game in August. Irish247 insider Tom Loy reported recently that visit was likely to happen.

The Cardinal are my 247Sports Crystal Ball forecast for Sarell and they will get him back to Palo Alto in January for an official.

        ———————
Sounds like Sarell could take all five officials before deciding.

“I know we’re considering Alabama and UCLA and perhaps Michigan,” Pam Sarell said. “I’m not sure on the other ones.”

Sarell will cap his prep career as a U.S. Army All-American.

With 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite Washington being so close, the Sarell camp may not take an official to see the Huskies.

  5. I don’t think it should be a surprise that Hawai’i and four schools who heavily recruit Hawai’i and beyond make up the top 5. And the service academies make sense, as do three more Pac schools who heavily recruit Hawai’i and beyond rounding out the top 12.

    But Idaho?

  6. This map is useless, and means nothing. Its interesting from a graphical point of view. So one third of the recruits come from three of the most populist states (Cal, Tex and Fl). I wonder why Coach A spends alot of time there??? Stanford had the highest per recruit in the mainland, so what if we are fourth? Stanford’s recruiting budget is probably the size of ours, yet they out recruit us. I think the only thing I gathered from this map, is something I have said for a long time, they need to recruit the Seattle area better.

    • On recruiting Seattle, yeah, Pat Casey has done pretty well in the Seattle (and Washington in general) area.

Damn! The whole topic reminds me of Lindsay Meggs.

      • Cav is the living emobidment of the Fantastic Four’s the Thing.

        Langs with this familiar bit:

“Langsdorf offered his evaluation of Saturday’s scrimmage, highlighting one area in particular in which the team needs to make significant improvement.

“Our two-minute drill needs a ton of work,” Langsdorf said. “That’s been our worst period. Way too many turnovers. ”

No James, no! Run away! Run away!

    • He graduated, and the only reason for him to stick around is so he can use the last of his eligibility playing a game he loves. He might as well go somewhere he can actually do that, as opposed to sitting on the sidelines. And why not go back home? It sets him up for better timing to hit the job market. He can live on home cooking, play football and set up interviews for the new year hirings.

      More power to him.

      • I agree, Jack. Talked to him just before he left town, seemed like a good kid, and he expressed essentially those same things.

Not sure why anyone here seems to feel the need to spit at a guy that moves on…Good luck to him.

          • Not sure if you implied it or I inferred it.

Saying nothing but ‘so glad he’s gone he sucked’ seems to be spitting at a guy who didn’t do anything wrong except get offered a scholarship that he accepted and kept his nose clean while earning it.

Would you like a better player to have the ship, ok, that’s fair, but not his fault.

I’d say this team can use some depth, hell they’re currently advertising for walk-ons at this point.

Why do Tennessee fans wear orange? So they can dress that way for the game on Saturday, go hunting on Sunday, and pick up trash on Monday.

What does the average Alabama player get on his SATs? Drool.

How many Michigan State freshmen football players does it take to change a light bulb? None. That’s a sophomore course.

How did the Auburn football player die from drinking milk? The cow fell on him.

Two Texas A&M football players were walking in the woods. One of them said, “Look, a dead bird.” The other looked up in the sky and said,” Where?”

What do you say to a Florida State University football player dressed in a three-piece suit? “Will the defendant please rise.”

If three Rutgers football players are in the same car, who is driving? The police officer.

How can you tell if a Clemson football player has a girlfriend? There’s tobacco juice on both sides of the pickup truck.

What do you get when you put 32 Arkansas cheerleaders in one room? A full set of teeth.

University of Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh is only going to dress half of his players for the game this week; the other half will have to dress themselves.

How is the Kansas football team like an opossum? They play dead at home and get killed on the road.

Why did the Tennessee linebacker steal a police car? He saw “911” on the side and thought it was a Porsche.

How do you get a former Illinois football player off your porch? Pay him for the pizza.

    • That building looks 2nd rate even brand new. Another skimp by OSU that will require all kinds of “lipstick on a pig” as the years go by. They already need to tear out that casino carpeting, too.

    • I think a good portion of that sidewalk space is going to be covered by mobile utility trailers converted into beer/wine/food carts. Hopefully the rest is covered by fans and barstools/tables

      • Hopefully when it’s all covered with that stuff it will look better, but the roof is really ugly and so is the casino carpeting.

We just can’t do much right.

      • Yup, the strip mall roof is bad and the whole thing is very unimpressive from the interior of the stadium. It will not impress on the TV shots. Low seats with a with a slab of concrete in back of them.
What is the progress on the outside portion facing the parking lot?

        • I seem to remember something about the front facade not being finished until November. They needed to get the lockerrooms, stadium side, etc finished in time for the season.

Re: the roof, didn’t someone here post something about a new roof design, or was that the tartan endzone guy holding out hope?

          • Renderings in fly-through show a white roof with beaver logo. Doesn’t look like it will be ready for this year. Can only hope Stansbury and Massari don’t screw the pooch and leave in its burnt-orange strip mall fashion. Looks a thousand times better with the white roof and logo seen in rendering.

      • But how good will that look? Depends on how it is done I guess….I guess I misunderstood, and expected there to be some above-average eats/drinks available inside, and the terrace for consumption and game watching…

I like the idea of food carts near the stadium, though some may think it detracts from or competes with tailgating.

        • I think the carts will be up on the terrace itself, rather than near the stadium(to limit access to terrace ticket holders)
would be nice if they allowed other venders to put carts up in the parker plaza area or maybe even on the truax practice field(with some type of barrier in place to protec the turf)

Did anybody catch Talkin’ Beavs last night? it looks like they might have had some renderings of the terrace that i hadn’t seen before, but i didn’t get to watch it.
Here’s a short clip which shows a brief animation of the seating area as the camera pans down towards the locker room entrance. It looks nice to me in the renderings, so I’ll reserve judgement till the construction is finished. Video is at the link below (warning, you’ll see Lindsey Schnell as well)

          https://twitter.com/CSNNW/status/768244367945523200

    • Chandler is one of the top 2 teams in AZ, so the competition is almost always lacking a little. Any highlights vs Bishop Gorman or Mountain Pointe would be vs equal or higher caliber opponents at least.

      • He’s been behind Lucas until this year. One if the few recruits that the whole “he’s about to blow up this year” excuse actually might not be shit. He looks fast but doesn’t appear to me to have very good balance. When I watch him run it looks like he’s about to fall over on his face. And again, cool pickup but is running back really a position of need?

        • He has a really long stride which makes his jukes and cuts slow. He has the speed at the next level but idk if those moves will work.

          • He knows where the end zone is and he points it in the right direction and turns on the jets. Beats the Victor Bolden behind the line of scrimmage happy dance for sure.

  8. Kirk Herbstreit is my new favorite prognosticator. Preseason “Herbies”
    Big Ten
    Ohio State over Minnesota
    Sleeper: Minnesota

    • Try a google search of “Rukkus Map” over the last 24 hours. You’ll find several sites are running it, including Rivals and Scout (except you probably have to pay for it there)

  9. The terrace will be nice when it is done.

The building needs to be fixed up. If I were put in charge I would look at trying to make that building look like a lodge with log siding. It would be a classy way to play up a Beaver image, and it would be timeless. The timber would be relatively cheap for OSU. We could probably take it off University owned land or donated by the dudes with the jet.

I would be disappointed to go to a game and not get to sit in that area though.

    • Unless the teams are in the red zone close to that end zone, the view will suck. Paying big bucks to drink beer and watch the game on the Speculum.

      • Maybe they are hoping it will develop to be the craziest of the fanbase ala The Dog Pound or The Black Hole.

Uh, crazy fan base, beavos, and wine… hmmm…something doesn’t fit.

  10. Listening to the Fan they have Dave Bartoo on College Football Matrix. Talking Big12 says Baylor should be ousted and replaced by Houston. Reason, Baylor harbored sex abusers, the worst of the worst.

He said all this wearing an ‘Uck hat, what a hypocrite (apparently he ignores what happens there?)

    • I agree, better than expected.

Considering their old locker room was worse than a high school’s, it’s a pretty substantial upgrade.

And despite previous comments, no vegas casino flooring in sight.

    • I think the space is an upgrade, higher ceilings, glass doors, modern design larger area, rehab pool, sauna, etc. The lockers themselves look underwhelming, but functional. Minimal design, not flashy.

  11. Hey Angry what the fuck am I doing wrong, how do I stay logged in? If I log in before I post my avatar shows up like normal but if I leave it logs me out.

    • In contrast to the Beavs:

“There will be one major change. Kill had co-offensive coordinators who both called plays at times. During the offseason, Claeys hired Jay Johnson away from Louisiana-Lafayette into the O-coordinator role, and he will call all the plays while also coaching the quarterbacks.

“I’m not a big believer in the O-line coach being a play-caller,” Claeys says. “Those guys need to be in the trenches (on the sidelines) with their guys on game day. Having (the quarterbacks coach) call plays fits my personality.”

I forgot the game is on a Thursday, they’ll have a few extra days and a bye week to prep for Idaho State! What a lousy place for the bye to fall.

      • Kill’s offensive system was a cluster fuck. It only came out after Clayes shit canned the OC/OL and the QB coach. Every down there was a running play called by the OC/OL coach and a passing play called by the QB coach. Kill would then pick the play…….run up the middle, usually. We suspected something like this was happening because whenever Kill was out with one of his medical issues, the offense got better and the play calling a little more creative. The inexcusable loss to Michigan last season was the straw that broke the camels back. Clayes wants one guy responsible and making the calls.

      • Seems like we always have a poorly placed bye week. So I checked.

        2016: 1 game bye week
        2015: 4 games bye week
        2014: 2 games bye week
        2013: 5 games bye week
        2012: 1 game bye week
        5 yr Avg: 2.6 games

        Oregon:
        2016: 6 games bye week
        2015: 7 games bye week
        2014: 4 games bye week
        2013: 3 games bye week
        2012: 6 games bye week
        5 yr Avg: 5.2 games

        Doesn’t seem quite fair.

          • They need to start pulling the Alabama late season “bye” of playing Chattanooga or some other FCS team in week 10. Play the starters in the first quarter to pad their stats then let em rest. Making sure to never leave your home state of course. The SEC recipe for “dominance”.

  12. Canzano likes the Beavers tough talk, clinched fist (paw?):

    http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2016/08/canzano_at_long_last_oregon_st.html#incart_river_index

    This statement is WAY off:

“Before we talk about why this kind of talk is a big moment. Lets deal with the football landscape in Corvallis. Because when outgoing coach Mike Riley suddenly moved out at Oregon State he took everything with him. The staff, the vision, the recruits, the enthusiasm, and the short-term hope. Surprised the shower heads were left. He took it all. “

    • From the same article…
“I suppose it’s why the Saulo declaration struck me on Wednesday. It’s not the first time I’ve heard a player talk metaphorically about punching another team in the mouth. It’s not the first time I’ve heard a player channel the frustration of being viewed as a doormat. It was just the first time I’d heard a player standing nowhere near his coach sound just like him.”

It may have happened under MR, but I can’t envision him saying it, or his teams having that mindset.

  13. Giving the new lockerroom a 9 out of 10. Some good elements and the jacuzzi area outdid the rendering for sure. Replaced a fairly boring orange Oregon State with a nice charcoal wall with best beaver head logo in the VFC.

Also the white helmets have a solid black mask so will be interesting if striping that mimics teeth remains on other helmets or not. The black Beavers script helmets may just be for practice but kinda hope not as they look good. These black helmets go better with most uni combos IMO as the shoulder striping is enough and with the striped black helmet starts to be a bit much for as sharp & tough a look.

There is a Pac-12 Preview on at 10am on ESPNU. Also think tge Terrace will look better than people expect once full of fans & local beer vendors. The ambiance of people enjoying themselves on a full deck is what will be most apparent on TV and that should benefit OSU building its program and perception.

Of course nothing helps more than Oregon State winning its opener over the B1G’s Minnesota. Go get one for the PAC-12 Beavs!

  14. The locker room is SWEET and I think they got rid of the striping on the face masks as well. It was too much striping on the uniform as a whole

  15. Noticed Oregon decided to time the opening of their marcus mariota fellatio center to take headlines away grom the new OSU locker room. Even sime subtle jabs at oregon state like saying “attention to detail” and showing a photo of a punching bag in their weight room with a beaver logo on it.

    Fuck the ducks….

    • Strategic which is more than OSU can say…I think the punching bag is kinda funny, and its been mostly true for about 7 seasons straight now. CW has pretty much a “W” for UO to pencil in preseason.
