I see Nemec is reporting, and maybe already mentioned here, that 2017 recruit Josh Bowcut is returning from his mission and will be part of OSU’s 2019 class. Originally, listed as a 6’5, 280 lb, 2 star defensive tackle. Anyone with insight on his playing ability? At minimum additional depth on the D line should be a good thing.
All the mission guys need a year to get back into lifting and remembering how to play football. The payoff is when they are jrs and srs at 23 or 24 years old.
He’s a standard 2-star developmental prospect, more so that he’s returning from a mission. He’s big and takes up space well and plays with good technique, but he lacks agility and explosive play-making ability. Needs a couple of years, but any depth on the d-line is a godsend.
I’m surprised he’s back already. He was a class of 2017 guy like David Morris. 2 year mission seems like it should still be partially through the 2nd year at this point, at best. Just an assumption here, but if he does come join the team this Summer, he will be very far from in game conditioning this year
I see radio silence from him, which means he’s still on his mission. If you look at his twitter, he says he can communicate via email. I imagine that’s how anemec got his info. If he’s on track, he’ll be home in mid-July.
Anyone have an update on DeShon Wilson? Curious if he would be allowed back on the team next year if he follows whatever plan he was given after being arrested.I see he is still in the student directory. First twitter post by him in awhile.
oregon gets out on 2 years probation, among other smaller punishments, for failure to follow NCAA compliance in MBB/WBB/T&F over the past several years.
Does anybody really think the NCAA/FBI investigation will lead to anything while they’re on probation? Me neither.
If Napoleon wants to go after Snowball for whatever, he can go right ahead and keep that campaign promise. Anybody who got immunity is compelled to speak the truth, because they can’t plead the fifth. So go get ’em, tiger!
The rest of us are wondering what the fuck Dumbshit is going to do to make him and us look more stupid than we looked yesterday… every day.
If you all want to go after HRC for emails, fine. I’m not stopping you or the GOP controlled government you put in place. Everyone should be equal under the law. So stop bleating the same tired memes at me, and demand it of your dear leader. I believe true leadership (from even a mediocre manager) should be able to whine and chew gum at the same time.
Or… just continue to bleat the memes, and be known as tools. You’re the political equivalent of someone posting pics of their waffles on social media.
After looking over the 2019 football schedule, it seems likely that our season ticket base will decline even further next year:
* Two Friday games (Okla St. and UW)
* One FCS game (Cal Poly)
* Civil War on the road
* Stanford, Utah, ASU are the only conference home games on Saturdays
* Presumably, no tax deduction for Our Beaver Nation donation (which means employers are unlikely to match their employee contributions)
The Athletic Department better get pretty damn creative to incentivize people to keep their tickets next season. One loophole that I have read about some schools trying is to raise the ticket cost, make the donation optional (so it becomes deductible again) and tie it to a different benefit (parking?).
I don’t have confidence in their ability to think outside the box but something dramatic needs to happen or we might fall below 10,000 in season tickets sold for 2019 (this year’s number was around 15,000, I believe).
Product on the field is why season tickets are declining.
Not one school has figured out how to deal with the donation issue, otherwise every school would have copied that solution.
Osu can do give aways to keep students coming but there’s not much else that can move the needle significantly. Lower ticket prices won’t move the needle if the product is crap. Beer didn’t get the attendance higher last year.
Lowering beer to $2 would give the State patrol a workout and a reason to charge more for stadium security. But any entertainment in the stadium is good.
OSU and other schools don’t seem to understand supply and demand. When supply is low and demand is high they can get away with requiring donor fees for season tickets. When demand is low they need to make it a value proposition for fans, i.e. minor league baseball. Oregon State has a large donor base of alums to go after but they seem to be hung up on just the 10-15k that will buy football tickets. The demographics of those that can be season ticket holders and those that can be donors aren’t always the same. Young alums, local residents and retired fans are great candidates for season tickets. Working alums in their prime with kids involved in activities are great donor candidates but unlikely to have time to invest in 6 fall Saturdays in Corvallis.
Demand is pretty low. For the USC game this year, coming off a win at Colorado, they offered a ticket promo. 2 free tickets to any person who has served in the military, active or retired. Still barely got Reser looking more than 65% full. And this was on a mostly dry Saturday evening.
If a free USC ticket isnt getting people in the gates, good luck ever selling that place out, with our team as bad as they currently are.
I do think ticket promotions to help make spending half of your day devoted to Beaver football would help, ala minor league baseball style as you mentioned. But that takes effort and creativity, things our athletic and sports marketing departments lack.
Best College Town in the Pac 12 works when you have a sold out Goss on a spring day. No one is buying that slogan when Reser is half empty. You’re right, creativity seems to be at an all time low. The alumni base is large enough and passionate enough to make a difference if they could ever figure out how to sell a vision of a better future.
Last comments, I promise. I agree with all above who say the product sucks and why buy it. Also, I have no faith in the plans Barnes’ outlined for the future including the west side of Reser until I start receiving emails and mailers asking for money. I live out of state but shouldn’t be too hard to find considering past ticket and online Beaver store purchases but they never follow up and ask me for anything except when Casey wins a big game. I’m not a big fish but I know a lot of other small fish like me that would give to support a cause we could believe in because we are tired of sucking.
This is a terrible idea because you need to sell 15,000 tickets to make $15,000 to help pay for a scholarships for example and other overhead. A few large donations will go a longer way that selling a bunch of cheap tix, unfortunately. Who pays the salaries etc for minor league teams? Ding ding ding, the major league teams! Gotta be above the break even line.
It would be great to get butts in the seats. I’ve been offered free tickets and declined because unless the the weather is great, and the game might be decent it’s not worth it.
Now, if the product was better and I could see us pulling off an upset like we were able to do here and there back in the day then yeah, I’m in! I will say there were some fun games this year and I think have some earlier game times helped. Having a beer in hand watching our defense tackle no one eased the pain a little as well.
reductio ad absurdum… or you posted this in the wrong spot.
None of the above posts talk about $1 tickets. And even if they did, Valley view was successfully sold with a mediocre team. Butts in seats is good at even $1. It means more in concessions, parking, etc… as long as they’re marginal sales.
As far as donor bases are concerned, we’ve had this discussion about how OSU sucks at taking loose change. Loose change is something people can afford on a monthly basis… or whenever. It adds up. 100k people giving $10/month is nothing to sneeze at… and nothing that OSU has.
This is a duh. Do nothing, and pretend that sucking up to the muck a mucks isn’t just a soul-sucking enterprise that gets mediocre numbers… or do something, and gain marginal revenues.
Topic was brought up this morning on Dan and Nigel about adding a 13th game.
Dan said don’t do it, Beavs already have tough enough time staying healthy with thin, undersized roster.
Nigel said do it, more games gives kids more game-type scenarios to improve.
Interesting takes but sounds like OSU decided not to take the 13th game.
Crap, I’m already concerned about Cal Poly, I hope they still don’t run that the service academy type option. That would be 30 minutes or more of tackling by the Beav defense! Also, the Beavs dominate win over So.Utah looks less impressive now. They went 1-10 this year, their worst season in a long time. I watched that game with the assumption that SUU was a good FCS team, which turned out not to be the case.
Useless information…..that new spring football league’s Arizona team has a lot of Beavers on the roster (not sure if it’s a territorial thing) including Villamin and Mullaney. I think Slick Rick is the coach. No Beavers on Bikey’s team.
Beavs offered Boise St 2019 DE vernal commit Mike Callahan over thelast weekend and then visited his school too. From what I’ve heard, he’s not interested in OSU and is focused on Boise 100%, but he could be a name to watch out for over the weekend, in case they get him in for a visit. Otherwise, I think it will be a mostly quiet weekend. The other guy I’m watching is Eldridge, who I mentioned the other day from Arizona. Either guy would be nice to get, but we are at 21 verbals/commits if you count Liku(which i am), so I’m not thinking there is a ton of urgency to fill these last few spots by the early signing period. Might be wise to keep a few spota available because you never know who could be looking for a landing spot by the late signing period
GA talked up the possibility of immediate playing time to each recruiting class as a way to try and get higher rated guys. Didn’t really work. Is JS down-playing this strategy and trying to create a team bond of putting in the work rather than a me first mentality?
I hope so, but that doesn’t mean hard workers are going to beat good/great talent. Poor motivated bad talent certainly doesn’t.
JS needs to sell skill development and walk on opportunities. 2 things Riley did well. One of the seniors on the defensive line, forget who, commented on the football IQ the new staff teaches. Said it wasn’t there under Andersen. That was a good sign considering the lack of tackling IQ exhibited.
He doesn’t think we’re smart enough to understand…“We’re challenging to follow because we’re unique as a conference,” Scott said.
Unique, for sure! Scott makes more than any of his contemporary commissioners while overseeing a conference that is paying its member institutions less than the other top conferences.
Jon Wiler has more on Scott, the replay fiasco, and Ed Ray bringing his “A” game to defend the status quo. Watch out for that “angry sports blogger mob”.
Oregon State president Ed Ray responded to the group:
“We have no interest in letting others define us. We do have so much to be proud of … I have seen no adverse impact of sportswriter nastiness among supporters of the university. We should talk about seizing the communications initiative in the sports world. I think some of your concern is probably due to having to deal continually with the characters who populate sports media.”
Scott responded to Ray:
“Thanks for your note and sharing with the group. We’ve got some CEOs new to this environment with angry sports blogger mob, and I’m sure some are more sensitive and reactionary to it. So your not (sic) was very helpful indeed.”
Read that again, Ray has seen“no adverse impact of sportswriter nastiness among supporters of the university”
I have seen no adverse impact of sportswriter nastiness among supporters of the university.
You all make me want to believe in a god… so I can make him (it who am is always a he) damn something.
That’s how gods work… right? We don’t need to affirm our faith by saying the Apollo Creed or anything.
Right?
So god damn! You all are just being dumb about this. Translate it this way:
None of the alums or boosters I talk to think John Canzano’s ideas are valid, hold water, come from a place of integrity, are well thought out, have any meaning, are believable, have any semblance to reality, add up, are productive thought, lead anyone to any credible thought or are deep enough for an infant with SIDS to drown in while sleeping.
“I personally think Scott is great, he is doing a fantastic job therefore every other person on the planet much think the same thing because I am incapable of believing anyone thinks differently than me”
You go back through my posts and actually read them. The job he’s doing is different than the one other commissioners you think are schooling him are doing. When we compare experience and job description, his pay is equitable to all other commissioners, except that Delany should be paid comparably more. I agreed that overall admin pay was too high across the board.
When running numbers for the cost of the conference HQ, you wanted to compare 40 people in a strip mall in Illinois and a three person office in Midtown with a 100+ person office with studios and a TV network in digital central, San Fran.
Why did you think that even made sense?
You simply cut and pasted Dolphin Boy’s extremely poor ideas here, and I slapped them down. I didn’t say a fantastic job was being done. I just said a different job that considered a long game was being done… one that most other conferences are ignoring for a shallow money-grab.
I get it. You read Dolphin Boy and became as confused as he was about the numbers that were introduced without any context, but with a ton of relativist goop. Even a semi-deep look at those numbers chases any doubts out of the room with laughter.
Are there things he has done or is doing that can or should have been done better? Sure. Are your really shallow Dolphin Boy ideas passing muster? Not a bit.
Your trying to conflate the BCS with the CFP was also kinda cute, though silly. And your willful ignorance about how TV networks dictate everything and act as if they’re doing us a favor by even showing our games is… well… strange. I’m not telling or even asking you to agree with me. I’m just saying you should actually read the numbers, instead of parroting Dolphin Boy’s really weak smear numbers that say nothing he says they say.
You also called Tom Hansen a good and competent commissioner.
If you create a really poor straw man then choose to believe your own lies, I can see how you can think there might be some irony.
Otherwise, it’s just you all ignoring the numbers for what they are for some perceived nutso conspiracy theory of fail.
Think of it this way.
The ACC and SEC are screwed with their TV deals if content rules the day. This was noted two years ago. If they come out $100m ahead of the Pac by the time we create a new rights agreement, why is that differential not noted as investment on our part?
That investment will pay dividends in many ways. The most glaring way will be that the Pac owns their content. We won’t be beholden to the media to create and distribute our content. We will just be able to sell it to the highest bidders… on our terms.
This is why it is known in business that licensing can get you rich, but it will never get you wealthy.
The obvious caveat would be if you seek out, find and take part in global projects funded mostly by illegal monies. We’re supposed to have laws against that kind of thing, should someone have a soul so decrepit as to suborn morality for their avarice. But we see how that isn’t really true.
As in any organization, no matter how well constructed, there are flaws… some of them glaring.
Wonder if this kid, Nate Overholt, is going to be the guy teams kick themselces for not offering, like Kellen Moore?
Set the all-time TD mark for the state of Oregon this year with 59, on 74% completion percentage, and only 2 INTs. And only 1 offer, to Davidson.
I was never recruited for anything but my mindset would be if I’m not getting any offers, go walk-on. See if you can catch magic in a bottle and show the coaches something. If it doesn’t work out, stop playing the sport and keep going to school or transfer. He obviously can play the game. Has good height for a qb.
He’s a walk on candidate. Watching his film, you can see why he’s not being offered d1 scholarships. Throws a lot of floaters. It worked for him in high school but will need to show he can throw to smaller windows.
Good high school QB but needs years to become a servicable college QB. Not worth a scholarship.
He’s about the same as what I thought of colletto.
within the context of the OSU narrative….yikes. what the hell does that even mean. Come on man, talk like a freaking normal person. Nobody talks like that especially on a blog.
Conflating rosacea with an acetaldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency is just dumb. Putting up with that kind of kindergarten ignorance is why Michael Jackson wore one glove.
The only triggers we can witness with validity (that happen to be the largest triggers for this condition) are his heritage/skin, being in the sun and stress.
It was noted more than once here that he should have been wise enough to wear better sun protection. I think the discussion got deep enough that zinc oxide was mentioned as one of the tools he should use.
Whatever.
You guys want to play stalker ex with him, go ahead. I think it’s a waste of time.
What are our odds on Vohasek? Also, I noticed we just offered an OL from N Bend with a P-State offer. This have anything to do with Liku or do you still think we are the favorite?
Vohasek has a few options, which doesnt help. We dont get guys with options too frequently.
Jacob Ferenczi is likely a PWO offer. He’s visited OSU pretty frequently this year.
I still like our chances with Liku. but you never know until signing day is over
Someone who messages with me occasionally said Ferenczi is a scholarship offer actually.
One thing you’ll notice with the “offered” graphic he posted, is it looks like the work of our former graphics guy Robert Judin. So either somebody just created that and mimicked his style, or this offer has been in the works since early October and it is just now being announced.
He was gleefully reporting that the Gophers had won the first match in the volleyball payoffs against Oregon. He neglected to report that Oregon then won the next three matches and upset the #2 Gophers on their home court 3-1. Opps.
“I am asking for my release due to family issues,” Campbell said. “My family is going through tough times, and I feel that I need to be there to support them. Oregon State has been nothing but good to me. Coach Tinkle, the coaches and my teammates have been very supportive. This is about getting closer to my family.”
“We’re really sorry to see Jordan go,” Wayne Tinkle said. “He was making terrific strides, and we had big plans for him. … We wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”
Hey Angry, I don’t want to turn your blog into a flea market but it’s a slow time and I have a great deal on cleaning prodcuts if anyone is interested in a pyramid scheme.
Some Friday night humor for you, Jack.
This has to be one of the funniest old man moments I have seen play out publicly. And it’s just left out there for all to enjoy.
Apparently, if you own the course, you get to set par for performance at this level.
Unfortunately, this level of expertise for knowing cyber security by the cyber security chief is similar across the board in Dumbshit’s cabinet and admin.
In case you haven’t heard already, Nathan Eldridge is indeed visiting Oregon State this weekend. He was the transfer center from Arizona discussed in the last thread and earlier in this thread.
Also, Myles Tapusoa, the JuCo DT who was supposed to visit originally last week, is visiting now. He committed to Arizona last week and also received an oregon offer a couple of days ago, so I don’t really like our chances with him, but nice to still get him to visit.
Poor Arizona, that would be a blow to lose 2 guys to OSU in 1 weekend
“Andersen, the former USU head coach from 2009 to ‘12, is the sole favorite among a key group of Utah State boosters, so much so that support for Andersen shut down the school’s nationwide search…”
That pesky “key group of …boosters”………doesn’t every school have ’em? The secret to Barnes longevity?
Oh, and, “With most of the roster intact, the Utah State job was considered a turnkey, “win immediately” job among coaches.” TIME WILL TELL!
‘Interest in the Aggies’ job was strong, and the list of candidates who spoke with Utah State or were scheduled to in the coming days is deep.
SB Nation can confirm former Arizona and West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez, Maryland interim head coach Matt Canada, and former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich were among the names being considered for the job.’
Liars, aside from his stellar 26-24 record at usu and his epic flame out at LSU, why the fuck would you take this burn out over anyone else?
I don’t know why any team wouldn’t jump on the Matt Canada bandwagon. I don’t know why his current school doesn’t buy in. Maybe the rumors are that they have some sense, and G5 teams don’t even bother?
But you’re correct. Rich Rod would likely be excellent in the MWC. I can see him doing something that USU hasn’t done, except for one year in a vacuum–win a conference championship.
I was amazed and stunned like everyone else when GA made his move for us. 20/20 says we should have done some due diligence. And I say that not because of the rumors planted by Wiscy trolls that still persist here. I say that because of the vast dysfunction at Wiscy. They succeeded at the revenue sports because they sold their souls for them.
GA was destined to have good to great seasons there by virtue of their dysfunction. But even he knew he had to quit that scene.
As it turned out, it wasn’t just Wiscy.
I would like to point out I wanted that head coach at Buffalo… or the row your boat guy. Either would have us engaged for different reasons… neither of them being “understanding the culture”… both of them understanding energy, commitment and growth.
We’re now a supply-side culture. We eat/drink/sleep what is supplied because of it. That mentality does not compute when facing the demand in the coaching market. It seems to always hinge on the irrational fears and anxieties apparent at each school.
To recap, my top two in all the recent have been:
AD – Shawn Heilbron, Danny white
Hoops – Eric Musselmann, Mike White
Football – That Lance guy, Row the Boat
… and now we should throw another one into the mix. As much as I love Bailey, Brosius should take over.
Aside from the alleged cheer team/alchohol questions, in order for this to be turn-key, GA needs the QB situation settled before he gets there. He will get the band back together and in 1 season USU will be on a nose-dive to ineptitude and disappointment.
I get to see 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 12 of a title fight?
Fuck you, espn.
I guess I can spin this into a rant about announcers in hoops. It’s espn related.
I’m watching the Kentucky @ Seton Hall game, and PJ Washington and Myles Powell are just ballin. And the play-by-play guy starts to go into some weird discussion about how Kentucky just has no answer for Myles Powell, and Seton Hall has no answer for PJ Washington.
In back to back sentences, he presents this pseudo-logic.
Umm… hello?
Other than that, it was a really good day in hoops. I got to see a lot of good games. I hope tomorrow is the same.
Not feeling as much of a schadenfreude entertainment factor with #TPB2 as with #TPB. With #TPB, everyone kept telling us Riley shat rainbows and glitter, so it was nice for people to get a reality check. Vindication. With #TPB2 (Those Pantsed Bastards?) everyone knows Anderpants sucks.
Maybe he’ll get lucky and Chuckie Keaton 2 will come to Logan.
Their lack of quickness exposed. Lil Tinks looked like a rec-league guy thrown into a D1 game.
How is it possible that Steven Thompson’s kids can’t jump? He was a human kangaroo.
Desperate for a real ball handler.
Tres just has a bad handle and so-so footwork. So when he faces good defenders, he becomes a turnover machine. Him doing work off the ball and spotting up would be beneficial but they lack the PG who can get him the ball in the right spots. Team is filled with guys who can do a capable job handling the ball but when they get trapped like today in the PNR, it kills the offense.
Beavs revert to form, shooting 27% from 3 and <40% shooting overall for the game. Tough to win with those numbers. St. Louis even gave them a break by missing a ton of free throws, 15-32 at the line.
I think Kelly could actually do things on offense , if Tinkle and Thompson Jr. could look up from their awkward dribble drives long enough to pass the ball. Also, Hollins is a mess this year, another zero point game. I’m expecting another mediocre season. They’ve had two challenges so far and lost them. Texas A&M will be the final one and another loss.
How about Maddie Washington this year? IINM she has 1 PF in the last two games combined, playing just over 20 min each game.
Nice to see her get the start today and to see her playing more under control this year.
How about Maddie Washington this year? She has 1 PF in the last two games combined, playing just over 20 min each game. Night and day when compared to last season.
Nice to see her get the start today and to see her playing more under control this year.
OT – NFL QB play….scanned the NFL headlines, more superlatives about Mahomes so checked the QB stats…didn’t appreciate what a season Mahomes is having. For comparison, he has 5 more attempts than Brady, but with 43 TDs so far he has 20 more than Brady, and at 11 INTs only 3 more INTs than Brady….Luck is second in TDs at 34….Mahomes has a 66.8% completion percentage…the only NFL game I’ve watched is KC/St Louis MNF, which was certainly entertaining. The regular season’s super bowl….
NFL rule changes have opened up the offenses this year and protect the qb. No one wants to watch the backup qb play. Quite a drop off between starters and backups.
Former OSU D line coach, Chad K, was hired by SC today. Guess he wasn’t one of the idiots on GA’s staff. Word is according to FootballScoop that GA tried to bring him to Utah State but he chose the Titanic instead.
Women’s BB rankings out. Beaves still 8th but ducks fall to 7th. Interestingly south carolina drop 10 spots when they lost for the first time to a ranked team but the ducks only drop 4 to a unraked MSU. I know these rankings dont mean anything but still, what a joke.
Makes sense now why OSU suddenly offered Boise St DE commit Mike Callahan 2 weekends ago. Coach Chad K(from Andersen’s OSU regime)is rumored to be heading to USC for the vacant DL job there. I’m guessing this wasn’t a big secret. Last I heard, Callahan was still 100% with Boise, but not sure if the coaching change will affect that. Might be worth keeping an eye on
Since this is the most boring thread in history, how’s about a question:
Should/could/would Tibesar change the defense to a 4-3? I understand that they’re short of quality D-linemen but 4 shitty linemen would seem to have a better chance of getting in the way than 3?
Best Beav D’s in recent memory have been 4-3. Those teams had 2 decent DTs but not much depth. OSU should be able to find at least two DTs. Then it’s a matter of converting some OL and DE tweeners into DT so there’s depth. That makes more sense then running a 3-4 with bad DTs and slow, scrawny LBs.
Even a quality linebacker is going to get crushed by a guy that weighs 75-100# more than him. I understand the theory of wanting your best athletes on the field but it’s not smart to put those athletes up against guys they have no chance of beating.
At least put even a mediocre fatty up against an average O lineman. A 230# linebacker is fucked before the ball is snapped.
I agree, man.
Only way a LB like that can win a play is speed. Finding LBs with speed who can tackle and actually play the game is just as rare as finding a great DT. OSU’s best chance right now is a 4-3 where they are always developing (changing positions of OL, DEs, etc) guys into DTs.
Even those “great” Raven defenses had Ray Lewis making tackles 8-10 yards down field all the time. It’s just hard to consistently fill all those gaps in the 3-4.
Running a 3-4 allows for more beef to be on the field at one time. You can tailor (by developing them) your ILBs to be TE/FB/DE-type athletes who have a downhill mentality and can play quickly within a tight space, from the inside out.
But you need to have a NT who can occupy two gaps consistently.
Those against a 3-4 system will point to how few PSAs are qualified to fill that role.
Those who played that role and were highly sought after players in the NFL draft will overwhelmingly tell you they were just some no-name big ugly who went through a developmental process while in college and burst on the scene for a couple years of outstanding play while there.
Stop identifying players as positional when identifying their future roles. I remember watching Obum Gwacham’s HS tape (as a WR) and thinking to myself he looked like an awesome 3-4 OLB prospect… or a 4-3 DE, since we were stuck in that mentality back then. The low hanging fruit can be picked and developed for at least depth if the coaching staff is mediocre. If the staff knows what they’re doing, then those most important positions as identified by their plan can consistently be developed by identifying those PSAs who fit the mold of developmental futures, as opposed to the kids who are 4-star material.
We really didn’t see a 3-4 this year. It looked more like a 2-5, with an amorphous group of 5 always lending one to the nickel.
Oh yeah… it’s also easier to run the nickel out of the 3-4. That might be more important than any other factor.
3-4 as the base is fine. There’s just not a lot of quality d linemen around. With the offenses going with speed, it’s better to have more athletes on the field.
There’s a lot less road grader offensive linemen in college so defenses can get away with going with a smaller defense.
Very few teams have those. Stanford. That’s about it.
NFL coaches complain that college offenses don’t prepare olinemen foe the NFL since they dont have to generate a push anymore and don’t have to sustain their blocks for very long. Pancake blocks are a relic of the past now due to spread offenses. Left tackles are no longer a prized player.
Beavs might receive a little of the ripple effect from Coach Chad moving from Boise St to USC.
You might hear one of our Quality Control staff members, Coach Lose(was DL coach at PSU before taking a position at OSU) could be a candidate to replace Chad at Boise.
I actually think losing him from our QC staff would be kindof a big deal, because I think he played a pretty big role in scouting recruits for our coaching staff.
Interesting, hopefully he sticks around. I’ve heard through the grapevine he is well-liked. Although he isn’t an on-field coach, it’d be nice to keep the whole staff together for one year.
Listened to GA’s introductory presser today. He’s very chummy with his media pals there and he was not asked anything about why he quit at Oregon State. GA did share some insight though that one can assume has to do with his issues at OSU.
He said he was planning to be defensive coordinator but someone approached him that he has belief in. Guessing it’s not Clune.
He also said he had a couple guys he was going to interview for OC but that he is going to be very thorough and patient in hiring position coaches. He said that is a lesson learned from the past that he needs to do his due diligence in making those hires. He said at the power 5 level some of the guys were making a lot of money and were complacent and that he lost his edge to hold them accountable.
He also said how he plans to retire in Logan, Utah, which Utah State fans will want to believe he has no intention of leaving. He mentioned they still have a house in Salt Lake. Utah State fans may be heartbroken when Wittingham retires and Gary goes after the Utah gig. Nothing said about big boy pants or anything. Definitely looked at home and comfortable there. More so than ever did at OSU.
I can see Blount going there and increasing his efficiency by 6-7% year over year. It is the MWC.
I don’t know who the QB in place is and don’t really care. But I can see this becoming a similar issue quite easily. The difference will be that it’s the MWC, and any seemingly controversial decisions will be mitigated (if not forgotten) because of that.
All he really needs to do is luck into having a decent OC.
Head coaches should also coach special teams. It’s the difference maker when all is said and done. It can turn a 3-9 season into a 7-5 season with a couple plays here and there, just like offense and defense.
It’s also the place where a head coach can best assess his young talent and reserves, since they’re the ones who fill his teams.
Same pugnacious, aggressive manager that started at OSU. His first time around USU introductory presser was better (by virtue of being much shorter). It’s not difficult to imagine him rubbing a few of the SA’s the wrong way with his aggressive intensity if things aren’t going great (especially the smarter ones). Interpreted a couple things differently, namely his tacit admission that he was the complacent one in managing his p5 hires. He’s edgy, like that Seth guy; maybe it’ll work out again in the MWC, but tend to think he’ll be only as good as his subordinates again.
There were 2 JC DT’s I mentioned the other day here–> (http://angrybeavs.com/athletics/14179#comment-296248)
who could be getting offers in the near future.
James Rawls was just offered today. Probably means Myles Tapusoa passed on OSU after his visit.
Cole Bailey, you’re in the on deck circle(He hasn’t been offered yet)
Rawls has 4 to play 3 apparently, which would be nice, particularly if he is able to join up in January. Based on his size, I would guess DE. His film shows him playing on the inside a lot. He seems to use quickness more than brute strength. I’m guessing Vohasek may be leaning towards N.C. Or perhaps coaches are simply seeing who commits and takes the achollie first? If he can gain 15-20 pounds in 8 months, should be ready in terms of size to play DE.
The zero offers part concerns me. Sure, there are gems to be found, but they’re harder to find in the modern recruiting environment than back in the Erickson JC days.
Regarding the 3-4 vs the 4-3. Tibesar is used to the 3-4 and the success of that system at Wisconsin got him the gig. So he will run a 3-4. This year it was a bastardized 2-5. It is easier to recruit to because the DL does not have to be as good of athletes. You can find a bunch 6’2”-6’5” guys who can pack on 25-30 pounds and turn into LB’s. Wisconsin has made a living out of that and I would bet Tibs is trying to replicate that. Former HS QBs, WR’s, and others that did not play that position in HS have been transformed into All Americans and All B1G LB’s. What that probably means is the D is better next year, but still not very good. This will most likely involve a lot of projections in recruiting.
Probably year three they will have the type of players with the time to physically develop them.
Omar Hicks-Onu is also transferring, per the Twitter. I know he has been hurt, but we are going to be thin in the secondary. At least it frees up a couple schollies for Niner to get his own recruits.
A variety of breakfast dishes, typically made by stacking an English muffin or biscuit with an egg and other toppings, then finished with a sauce, typically hollandaise. Now I’m hungry.
Sounds like we might get graduate transfer Nathan Eldridge, who started 25 consecutive games with Arizona prior to missing this season with a knee injury. Oregon State is the presumed favorite given Eldridge’s relationship with run game coordinator/offensive line coach Jim Michalczik, formerly his position coach at Arizona. If his knee is good he could be a big help to us.
On a side note: we’re at the 10 year anniversary of AB. 9 years of this format (the black wordpress site prior to this). The only guy I remember from both is Jack. Anyone else?
Next year we hit 10 years with this current platform, too. Crazy.
I’ve been going through some personal issues… That’s why I haven’t been on and posting. I still visit this site about once a week. Don’t worry it’s nothing like cancer or anything medical for that matter. Just stuff to do with my x wife and x step daughter and it’s taking up most of my free time…
Oh what the hell, I’ll spill my beans so to speak. when I got divorced 8 years ago I was awarded custody of my biological daughter. The x had another daughter from her first husband when we married and I always treated and loved her like she was my own. So after the divorce, the X’s first husband managed to get custody of her(pretty easily as the x tried to shoot my and was in jail for it & he used the same lawyer as me). So the x wife’s first x moved to Nevada taking the now x step daughter with her. She came up on holidays and during the summer to visit her mom and family on that side but always wanted to spend time with me and her 1/2 sister while she was here. I’m all for that so for the last 8 years everything has been peachy. The x step daughter gets to see and maintain a relationship with her 1/2 sister (and me ). Fast forward to this last October. My x wife calls me and says my x step daughter is in the hospital and she really wants to you( like more than her bio dad and mom). This pisses both of them off. Turns out the X’s first x had been physically abusive to his new wife and verbally abusive to the x step daughter and the x step daughter had started cutting herself sometime after her last visit here and tried to kill herself the weekend after Thanksgiving. The state of Nevada is doing an investigation into her bio dad for abuse vebal and physical ( possibly sexual too). The state gave her a choice of foster parents or in patient care at a mental health facility. She took the in patient care( Wich is really what she needs). So she’d been calling me and my daughter and talking and sounding like she was making progress towards getting mentally stable. Then out of the blue the x calls me and says that her first x went to the care facility and insisted the x step daughter have no contact with anyone. And yes if you’re a parent under investigation for abuse you still get to visit your kids and say whom they can have a contact with. Pretty messed up ! So the last time I talked to her I offered to let her live here if it came to to that or going with foster parents. As a non parent I have like zero rights to any information about what’s going on with her. So I’ve been working with my attorney, our CSD and Nevada’s version of the CSD trying to figure out what’s going on with her and attempting to get Nevada to make me her legal guardian because obviously her bio parents shouldn’t be in the picture when she’s released from the mental health facility. All I want is this kid to be in a safe, loving environment where she can grow and prosper. You wouldn’t think it would be that hard looking at her bio parents, but man oh man this is an uphill battle.
Are there no outreach organizations to help her? You could try an end-run for her sanity by getting an child-safety advocate to step in, assess the situation and fight for her.
All of those sound good, but the cake has to be a butter cream for me. I can’t stand the cream cheese icings, for whatever reason. I like cream cheese with berries. But I can’t eat it when it’s mixed with sugar.
Thanks guys, I’m literally trying everything I can. Now about that icing: no cake should have anything to do with cream cheese ever! Butter cream is the way to go
I’ve lurked for about the whole run but didn’t start posting till last season (needed the therapy thru the GA debacle). Curious if you’ve ever thought about moving to a forum based system? (I’m sure you have). I’ve used forum software instead of WordPress for a lot of community web projects like this, if you know what you’re doing you can still have a nice homepage/featured posts in addition to a full forum. WordPress is easy/ubiquitous but it’s so slow and such a resource hog, especially with how many users/comments you’re getting these days. Thanks for keeping it going, wouldent have survived anderpants without it.
10 years of Jack.
Ah, yes, the Shore Patrol story, several good insights into Beavs Basketball (not the little girls ball), some IPA recommendations and, of course, the music vids.
BTW, when was the “Jump to Bottom” feature added? That was several months after I joined this group of degenerates. Happy AB Anniversary to all!!
Jack would be on my short list to enjoy an IPA with. I’d need about 10 to discuss politics with him but the first 2 or 3 discussing sports would be quite enjoyable for me.
I found my chit after that discussion about Cubi. It says leave on it. I knew it did, but I had to check. 4 days. I don’t remember some of it and may blend stories together. Sorry.
The women’s ball is smaller than what I know of as a regulation ball. It is that way because it makes the game easier. I don’t know what to tell you about that. If this triggers you, it’s not because I said what is apparent… because it’s apparent.
I’m getting tired of IPAs being just about all that’s available. I don’t really like wits or ciders. I enjoy a cold IPA on a hot day… or a pilsner… or one following the other. But I’d like some stouts available from somewhere other than 16 tons or the bier stein.
Same here on IPA, best during hot weather. This time of year I enjoy a stout, Obsidian from Deschutes, maybe too pedestrian for a connisour but I like it.
I’ve got a couple old chits too, one says “R and R – Sydney”. Involved Victoria Bitter.
Obsidian used to be a go to. But it went from a warm velvety texture and a smooth head with some smoke flavor to something that feels like a Coke in the mouth… without as much sugar. I don’t get it. I’d much rather see Abyss on the shelves… and do occasionally.
I picked up a case of Sam Smith Organic Chocolate Stout from Grocery Outlet last month. It was a score… even at $3.60 a bottle. I always have a pig of OT Brown. I don’t currently have the kornys in use. I haven’t run into a batch of anything I’ve wanted that badly, recently. I’m thinking of making a beer run to Lincoln City next week. Rusty Truck has a good stout going right now. If I ever get up to Seattle, Fremont has a Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout that is really good. Migration has a good milk stout right now, but I feel like I should have a chaser with it.
I lthink IPA’s are good year round and haven’t grown tired of them yet. Don’t have quite the selection as Oregon but if you’re down in the desert, Tower Station is a good one. When not indulging in IPA’s, Pendleton Whisky has become my favorite. Mostly because it’s from Oregon and it connects me to home. Secondly, the price is right and it’s pretty darn smooth.
Started reading the wordpress site first term of my freshman year at OSU in 2009. Haven’t been a regular commenter but never stopped reading. I remember the loss to UW in 2010 or 11 when you were thinking of letting the site go… Glad you decided to stick it out!
I’m pretty sure I was on the black wordpress site also. I remember discussing the early days of the CR hoops era (such hope at the time). Congrats on 10 years.
I liked that old format. But I’ve always loved the the option to use a fake email and remain anonymous. I was around back then. We used to plug on Oregonlive and I think espn back then.
I’ve been lurking since 08’. Only other people I remember commenting on the back in black site was beav girl and maybe great white hunter. I even used to read orange express from time to time.
I’m not to upset with this development. Doubt Angry is either. Pretty sure he was the defensive coach you were least enthused about from the get go.
Well maybe he and Bray.
I dont think Burns was very influential in recruiting or coaching, so if another team wants to help us hit the reser button on that position, it might be good to get someone with new/different connections on the staff.
Just hope Burns doesn’t poach guy from our class right before signing day, but I wouldn’t think we’re the direction USC would go.
Nice is the guru and can correct me on this, but I believe he is well-liked with his connections in So. Cal. He was on Pete Carroll’s staff during their reign of dominance. Is this a done deal? I’m not sure how he is as a coach, but Pete was a secondary coach himself back in the day, so I imagine Burns met his high standards.
I’d like him to stay for continuity, and I’m not sure who Niner could get that would be as good in regards to recruiting connections.
Burns is a MASSIVE downgrade from Hall. I understand JS’s philosophy of high output/low ego but I wholeheartedly disagree when it comes to defensive backs and their coaches.
I’ve confirmed it but said i wouldn’t spoil it. There are enough clues out there to figure it out. It’s a very big(talent and star wise) pickup for the Beavs
He’s announced it. It’s in state 2020 LB John Miller from Tualatin. One of a trio of must get in-state defensive guys who Oregon State has made a priority. (walling and alfieri being the other 2)
Krol actually tipped me off earlier this week when he saw Jonathan Smith at one of Miller’s games earlier this week.
Have a little update on DB coaching search. James Dockery is interested in the job, but there hasn’t been any communication between he and OSU up to this point.
Curious what all of you would think about him in that role?
I think he’s a pretty good all around candidate. Nobody loves the Beavs more, that knows defensive backs as well as he does(his words). He has local highschool ties having coached around here. He has that personality that we need in living rooms for recruiting. NFL experience. Just seems like an ideal candidate, save for the college level experience. But if you’re going to take a chance on an inexperienced coach, have those other strengths helps make up for it.
I like it. I would imagine he has recruiting ties down in CA as well. He definitely loves the Beavs and that would show in living rooms as well as to current players.
I had the pleasure of working with Doc on my debate team at OSU before I knew who he was. One of the coolest guys I have ever met and just has an infectious attitude in a very good way. I think he would be a great fit. He is currently the head coach at one of the so cal high schools.
Was checking out the Utah State board and it appears the kool-aid man has struck again…
Could not be happier with the GA hire….

At the risk of sounding sycophantic, GA is absolutely hitting it out of the park. I was struck by the content of tweets from former players like Tavaris McMillian and Will Davis (there may have been others) who lauded Gary for literally changing their lives. That is pretty heady praise and a consistent theme emanating from many of Gary’s former players (recall tearful BoJay Filimoeatu after the Utah game “he’s like a father to me. I’d do anything for him”). Not to be overly sentimental, but if you’ve ever read or heard Jerry Kramer of the Green Bay Packers talk about that intangible “something” the Packers had that gave them a dominating edge in the 60s, he unfailingly comes back to the players’ “love of the old man”. Adult men wanted to play as hard as they could for Lombardi. Because of the way they felt about him, they wanted to please him and went to extraordinary effort to do so. They also completely internalized his ethos on the importance of winning. Gary has those same intangibles, that same ability to inspire and to inculcate the affection of his players and hence their loyalty and extraordinary effort.
Gary’s coordinator and assistant coaching hires also reflect his exceptional commitment to the success and well-being of his players: he goes out and hires the finest coordinators he can possibly attract, thus giving his players the finest possible coaching and the greatest possible chance to succeed on the gridiron.
Gary calling every recruit within hours of his hire and the immediate commitment of a couple of high quality players based solely on Gary being hired are further evidence of why he has a reputation as a coach players want to play for.
I could not be happier to have this man back in our program. He is a difference maker and if you care about people, its pure joy watching him work, even from a distance. Perhaps Gary made some mistake at OSU. Honestly, I couldn’t care less. Who among us hasn’t erred from time to time, especially in circumstances of extreme stress, and who among us is not continually learning from out mistakes (and hopefully and improving)? Whatever did or did not happen at OSU, one thing is indisputable: it is unheard of for a college football coach to leave $12 million on the table, money that was contractually owed to him simply because he felt he didn’t deliver what he promised to deliver. Few people in our world have that kind of integrity.
There was an excitement, an intangible and difficult to describe emotional and human element that departed Utah State football when Gary left. It is back. I think it will also translate into considerably improved attendance. Fans loved to watch Gary coach. His enthusiasm on the sidelines and his passion are things fans pay to see in person.
Here’s wishing Gary, his staff and players every success.

In the end, he’s back down to a non-Power Five school, most of the college football world could give two shits. He will mostly be remembered for his bizarre move of leaving Wisconsin and then fucking up the Oregon St. program.
Big boy pants is ubiquitous in college football. It has been for decades.
Wardaddy is an old school football term. If you think GA made it up, your claim is that you don’t know football. Any college football coach can tell you the difference between a slobberknocker and a wardaddy. It’s also ubiquitous.
GA didn’t fuck up OSU football. He just did not much (beyond some fundraising) to make it better in 2.5 years.
I’m not able to find a reason for the Payton Dastrup denial by NCAA to play this year. I remember some discussion about it in the blog but would someone explain what’s going on there. Article in the Gazette Times and all others I can find are pretty vague.
For your podcast Angry, at the risk of stating the obvious, I guess recruiting and coaching (perhaps by position groups) would have to be a couple of the topics. Other thoughts might include state network with high school coaches, some of whom might make good guests and have some good ideas. And perhaps, for the next year or two anyway, how best to tap into the JC circuit.
That’s just something the modern browsers are doing if you don’t use https (we use standard http). Is the Twitter feed showing? Sometimes it won’t show if the settings are locked down like that. In Firefox, the way around this is to click the little shield in the URL and allow 3rd party permissions. I’m not sure how exactly to fix it in Chrome since I never use it, but it’s probably something very similar.
I use that for a lot of projects if client isn’t buying their own TLS cert for e-commerce. A bit of a hassle cause you’ve got to renew it fairly often but worth it imo.
Https via SSL is essentially the standard at this point and totally worth it just for the sizable SEO boost alone, regardless of content. Nothing to lose and a lot to gain kind of situation. E-commerce should use the newer TLS protocol.
I guess I’m the whiny fan since I was the one who brought up Blount not coming out of his redshirt last year. Meanwhile Colletto gave up his redshirt for spot duty this year. Don’t tell me it doesn’t mean something when a kid makes sacrifices for the betterment of the team. Colletto and Luton sacrificed for the team while Blount was worried about Blount.
Colletto should only take a redshirt to learn a TE or receiving role. I also don’t think he was planning on redshirting… never heard a whiff of it… especially after 7 or 8 games, in which he played 6 or so.
This was probably the last time he gets to play QB. So it was likely worth it to him to use up eligibility.
Besides, 2017 was the year for OSU QBs to do what was best for themselves. He’s a year too late.
The plan was for him to redshirt as of early October but things changed and he was needed. If there is a position change for him, it will be after spring ball and the move would likely be to defense. Blount should have played in 2017 when the opportunity was there for him. But how is Blount sitting out any different than McMaryion leaving the program? You’ve been firm with your opinions on McMaryion, which I agree with. Just don’t see how the Blount deal is any different.
They all get to watch the coaches’ sons handle the ball 90% and shoot the ball 70% of the time.
We have no girth on the floor at any one time without G or Wilson out there. We don’t have a handle. St Louis showed the scouting report on us was to trap. When we have guys who cross the mid-line then pick up the ball when the trap is 10-15 feet away, it’s not even a matter of not having a press break. It’s a matter of simple fundamentals. Attack and split the press. These guys might as well just dribble to the corner and pick it up. That’s how depressing the St Louis game was.
Rotate the bigs… all of them. They can be used as raw tools to beat on teams inside, keeping the perimeter clean.
Vernon or Blasey need to be on the floor at all times… and bringing the ball up court at all times.
aTm’s upperclassmen participation in this game: 68 minutes
OSU’s upperclassmen participation in this game: 97 minutes
Three what I would term “challenges” for MBB in the non-conference and they failed them all. NIce to see Tinkle and Junior rise to the occasion once again. I’m sick of this team, but at this point I don’t know what the alternative is?
ST was terrible.
Hollins. WTF? He is worse than last year. Too weak to secure rebounds and misses critical front end FT’s down the stretch.
Tinkle shooting 66% FT? Dribbling too much and turning it over.
Ladies gag their game against A&M as well. Not a great day to be a Beaver.
OSU is a baseball and women’s basketball school only. Are we kidding ourselves thinking OSU will be more competitive than breaking .500 in football and basketball on a regular basis? Is it worth investing more time than cheering from a distance? (reading the box score rather than wasting time watching the full game) I want being a Beaver fan to be fun, enjoyable and fairly effortless. Is this too much to ask for? Being in a constant state of hopeless denial is exhausting. At what point does a Beaver fan accept the fact that we will (more often than not) be the doormat of not only the Pac-12, but the doormat of the Power 5 conferences as well? If you disagree, tell me how it will change and what it will take? The gap between OSU and that team down south to far too wide to overcome I’m afraid. I’m just so tired of being in denial.
I think you have to ask why that’s the case? I can’t think of anything more important than the head coach, the Beavs have or recently had top 10% head coaching in WBB and baseball and do not in Football and MBB. Both of these sports have had success when they had upper tier coaching (I consider DE and Ralph superior college coaches). Unfortunately, every time a hire is made that is not elite, the five year-ish cycle continues.
You’re in the wrong place for those with hopeless denial. And don’t confuse that with the grace period any coach should really get. This last football season was a throwaway, but it could have shown some kind of improvement… something that said the coaches were giving as much effort as the kids on the field.
But if you’re talking about the Pollyannas, point taken.
As a duck fan, why do you even waste your own time coming onto a Beaver forum and blabbing? You idiot quackers need some hobbies outside of jacking off 20 year old kids that go to a shitty school, in a shitty town.
I am not a d*ck fan! I’ve been cheering for the Beavers for 34 years. I’m trying to be reasonable and come to grip with reality. Dennis Erickson took us to new heights. I think we all thought that Fiesta Bowl 2000 season would change our future for the better, and give OSU a solid foundation to build on. Rather than it be an anomaly. I thought we would continue that momentum never looking back to being the basement dweller of the conference. We had better leadership within the athletic department then, and we had Al Reser. I wonder if I’m like many in this group, still holding on to the hope of returning a 2000 type of season?
If you’re trying to be realistic in OSU’s situation: you should hope to have a team that is competitive in most games every single season. On average you should be a 7 win team with 1-2 bad years (4 wins) and 1-2 great years (10 + wins) about every 10 years.
There is too much working against us to be a perineal top 20 team. Small market, comparatively small investment/donor base, local High School talent has improved a lot in last couple years but we’re still not exactly in a hot bed, and we’re not willing to bend the rules and cheat (positive will still hold us back when governance is currupt.)
Bikey’s complacency started places the nail in the board, and Wild man Anderpants craziness drove the nail in setting us back several years. Tough game to play catch up in.
In the end, you have to hope/expect to have a good coaching staff who maintains stability and catches lightning in a bottle every few years.
OSU, minus Casey and Rueck, doesn’t seem to manage coaching positions very well; keeping marginal coaches or hiring bad ones and extending contracts at minimal signs of success. There must be competition for the coaching positions – the college sports world is awash with prospective coaches. I have been following OSU for about 10 years; the continuation of Riley and his friends; Gary Andersen,Craig Robinson, and now Tinkle. OSU seems charmed by those types. In so-called minor sports, OSU seems content to only exist, although I see signs of life in softball and men’s soccer. Gymnastics and wrestling usually have winning seasons, at least. There’s a general malaise and somebody out there might have answers. I hope that person is found before too long.
I was at the Beaver game last night. Ugh. (1) Beavs in desperate need of a real point guard. They can’t handle pressure in the backcourt very well. A&M played aggressive defense and the Beavs had no answer. (2) What’s up with Hollins? (3) Offensively there was a lot of driving into the teeth of an aggressive zone, often ending up in a turnover.(4) Kelley has very good shot blocking instincts but isn’t very athletic and will get pushed around in the post a lot. He’s good as a rim protector coming from the week side. (5) Some bad luck as the shooters had a bit of an off night. Credit A&M for playing really hard.
All in all a frustrating experience for a fan. I like the pep band though. There is a very attractive sousaphone player.
For some insane reason I listened to some of Tinkle’s press conference, can’t believe he is still calling his team young, actually laid it out by class. Not saying it’s a completely veteran but when you have two Top 100 players who are upperclassmen and a third Top 100 who is a sophomore, you’re not that young. You could really see his frustration, but he’s the one accountable.
Interesting discussion about the coaches.Tinkle is nearing the point of dereliction of duty for not recruiting a true pg over the last 3 years and simply trusting that Thompson boys will handle it all.
Football: I think a return to winning seasons may be 3-4 years away under JS. However, I tend to think that there is a ticking clock for college football in general, given realignment, financial pressures, ESPN losing subscribers, cheating scandals, and playoff structure. In my mind, OSU must show themselves to be truly competitive within 2 years or they face being the odd man out of a massive reshuffle for all P5 conferences into some form of 4 major conferences and everyone else shutout. OSU is a charter member of PAC but it may not be enough to overcome the need to regain revenue for any new form of conference alignment that is coming.
I personally am tired of this narrative. Did they discuss kicking out Stanford when they were terrible for awhile? Or Wazzu? Or Arizona? This isn’t the first time a program has had some rough years. There has to be some bottom dwellers or else everyone would just be .500 ish. I look at what the university brings in other areas than just football both academically and athletically.
You may be tired of the narrative, doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
If this was 1992 you’d be right, it is not 1992. The world of college football has changed dramatically. It is no longer a regional sport. The battle is for national TV money now.
OSU is in no danger of being kicked out of the PAC academically or in non-revenue sports. The whole point is that football may very well separate itself from academics and non-revenue sports. And if it does not only will OSU be left behind but so would WSU and UA most likely.
So be tired of the narrative all you want, doesn’t mean it won’t happen. You are naive to think that money (more specifically national exposure money) isn’t driving college football and splitting that money 65 ways makes little to no sense when they could likely get just as much (more probably) if they took eliminated 25-30 of those them.
Sure…… I’m just waiting for someone with credibility on the topic to bring this up. So far it’s usually fans trolling or someone who’s goes off the deep end after some rough patches in the football program. Your what ifs statement can be said about anything. You know no more than the next guy if this could ever happen so my point is it really is a waste to bring it up. (restate point about waiting for credible person to bring it up) Gee, I had no idea money was involved in sports let alone college football. Glad I stopped by today.
2023 (B1G), 2024 (Pac, SEC T1) and 2025 (Big12) are when any realignments might occur. In order or that to happen, teams would have to leave their conferences at that time (for conferences with no exit fees). If there are exit fees, they would have to pay those as well. ACC members are just screwed until 2035 or so, unless they can afford both TV and conference breach fees. Then, except for Texas and the Pac, they would need to invest in the infrastructure necessary to provide content for distribution. Alternately, they can hire an independent contractor to do this, or they can continue to license their content to a dying (or at least a consistently diminishing) industry.
If they choose to consolidate in such a way, more power to them. But they will no longer be a part of the NCAA… in any sport. There’s no way the NCAA’s membership would allow such an intended inequity to remain in the organization.
So… goodbye to those 30 to 40 schools who choose to do so. They will now have to go through the process of labor unionization, payroll, arbitration, paying taxes and a shrinking revenue base… because some people think maximizing profits now is good for a healthy future. They don’t get to take part in the NCAA they left behind, so why should the fans of the schools who remained care about them any more? They won’t ever get to claim another college championship, because they did precisely what the SEC would tell them not to do to retain their amateur status. They disenfranchise a majority of their fan base, reducing their revenue even further.
High school players will have to choose to take their chances with the new league, which will necessarily have a draft and a salary structure in place. They won’t be able to choose that league then transfer to the NCAA. And who knows if the new league even pays in tuition, since it’s just a money-grab anyway. Alums might not care that their football and mens hoops teams are now professional, and their other sports are all NAIA… if they choose to retain those sports.
And then when they finally get the league up and running after experiencing all the craziness of it all, football will be on its deathbed, and not just because of CTE. That’s just informed parents protecting their children. The cost of liabilities will increase to astronomical numbers. And people will become aware their tax dollars have been subsidizing the game forever.
Why should I subsidize football, when shop and the arts are being defunded? At least with shop and the arts, I get a return on my investment with an educated labor pool from which to hire. If you don’t want those, why should I want to pay for sports? Schools can do a lot with the real estate hogged by these subsidies.
In the end, it will have been for maybe carving out a niche the NFL refuses to fill, a proper minor league.
Meanwhile, schools who remained in the NCAA would just plug along. New perceptions would be created for some teams in the vacuum of those departed. The tribalism of college sports that peeled away from the new league would still exist. But it would adapt to form a new hierarchy. Unless the incentives for players to choose the new league are seriously substantial, they would also peel away athletes who are still serious about gaining a free education, thus securing their futures.
What kid is going to run a c-b analysis and decide forgoing free school and a shot at an NFL future is better than just a shot at an NFL future? Most likely, the new league would have to pay enough to make that analysis tilt their way.
If you want a simpler regression (or start the numerous contingencies above), just look at how many schools there are in the FBS. Now wonder to yourself why the SEC (not the conference) allows it to remain non-profit while exactly 65 schools are associated with P5 conferences.
That and post-season bowl/play-off structure is dictated by the majority. Cartelizing “power” or “blue-blood” or “traditional” content (when really it will only be about market shares… and maybe potential ad revenues from a couple FBS owners) makes no sense in the context of losing control of the NCAA.
Since we’re only 2 days away from signing day, how about a little prediction game.
Give me your mosy likely candidate for these 2 categories and let’s revisit in a couple of days to see how we did.
1. Most likely current verbal pledge to flip to another team.
2. Most likely player to flip from another team to OSU.
3. Player most likely to verbally pledge to OSU who hasn’t already.
4. Are you happy with this Oregon State class?(transfers/greyshirts/mission kids included)
5. Are you happy with this class for just 2019 HS prospects?
1. Our best player.
2. Their worst player.
3. A 2 star with an offer from New Mexico.
4. It’s solid. Not sure I’m ever content.
5. It’s solid. Not sure I’m ever content.
It’s sad that this is what we just have come to expect every year.
We’ll end up get excited about a class headliner and that headliner will never playing for us.
Still can’t believe ASU has 3 QBs committed in this class, 2 of which have Oregon State ties(Ethan Long- in state kid, Joey Yellen-Offered early by OSU)
All we have for depth are a bunch of inexperienced Sophs, and. Junior who probably isn’t really a QB. Oh, and maybe Luton, but not likely.
If Gebbia doesn’t pan out or gets injured, our QB situation is worse than it’s been since GA’s first year. That’s pretty scary
Signed what, financial aid agreement?
Don’t think those binding. I think you could even have financial aid agreements with multiple schools. Wednesday is the first day any 2019 guy can truly be official.
Looks like a ceremonial signing day at his high school maybe? November 14th is a signing day for most other sports, but not football. Football has it’s own separate dates (Dec 19th and Feb 6th) plus a JUCO period around Jan 15th.
So Long may have signed a piece of paper in front of his classmates in November, but it wasn’t binding at that time.
Who knew Sean Harlow had a little brother who plays OL in the 2019 class?
Jack Harlow might be a name to keep an eye out for as we get closer to wrapping up the 2019 class.
I’ll have to grab the podcast later, but Coach Smith and Coach Tibesar are/were on Joe Beaver today. anybody here(oob? scotty?) who listened to it, was there anything interesting?
Looks like the 2019 baseball roster is up. No real big changes.
Roster is at 36 so someone is going to get cut.
Players not returning who had eligibility – Attalah, Donovan and Warren.
Signed but not on roster,
Gavin Grant
Jayce Easley
JC add – Alex Mcgarry
Basically no significant losses. Pitching only loses heimlich. Hopefully Abel can keep building on last year and doesn’t go the same way Jorge Reyes went.
Offense will be mightily challenged. Can’t replace those guys even in aggregate.
None of that is real. Fields will go to a school that has a shot at the playoffs. Herbert should turn pro now. His stock won’t go any higher. 2020 will have a strong QB class.
We actually looked like a team last night. Those who made cuts with purpose were fed. Five players in double figures, none of them named Ethan. But still too many turnovers.
I realize they’re smaller than we are. But we actually played like a team that should just handle a team of that caliber. It should probably be noted that Reichle and Vernon logged 50 minutes. But Wilson is still lacking any considerable floor time going into conference play.
Smith, on the 2018 season:
“I’m not going to sit back and say it was a great season. But it was an important season, to go through some of that. Don’t try to do short cuts. We didn’t sacrifice the standards, and that hurt us a couple times with kids. We had some defections before we played games in the fall that hurt us. But at the same time, you want to be working with kids that are about the way we do it. If they’re not about that, then it might be better (to leave).”
However things shake out I do admire the approach.
Were there anymore transfers coming in other than the big 4? I’m not counting jc transfers.
These guys will really need to live up to their billing.
Gebbia needs to take hold of the starting QB and not make it a close battle.
Lindsay needs to become that all around player. Kick/punt return man, slot/scat back wr.
Gumbs needs to be the missing edge rusher.
Roberts needs to be the lb that makes the tackles.
Hoping these guys are head and shoulders above the current talent.
I don’t think you’ll hear about any new names transferring in tomorrow, but I suppose it’s possible. There’s really no need to have a transfer join the team on signing day, since they don’t have the same short windows for signing.
I do think we’ll end up with Eldridge eventually as a grad transfer, but it won’t be tomorrow. He still has 3 visits available to take. Anything can happen there.
Our passing game should be pretty fun to watch next year. Lots of speedy receivers, plus Hodgins/Smalls/Quitoriano represent some bigger but slower guys who have size to win mismatches and we already know we have some good returning talent at RB with Pierce and Jefferson. Biggest question mark next year might just be the OL. Eldridge would help, but we don’t have a ton of returning experience along the line.
There are some good sized guys available, but they just don’t have the real game experience you’d hope for. Hoping for good things from last year’s freshmen, Clarke/Mackay/Wellsfry, but just haven’t seen anything from them yet to know what to expect. Kipper was a nice additional body we added earlier this year.
Beavs picked up JC DE Simon Sandberg today. Sweedish kid. He’s been injured so it’s tough to say how good or bad he is, but he’s another body to help bolster the DL next year.
The lack of offers is obviously a concern but this team needs college ready bodies and hopefully he is coming in January and maybe the injuries mean OSU found that rare diamond in the rough.
After some quick googling he appears to be a 4 years to play 3 guy and is from Sweden so I doubt he got much coaching prior to attending a JC (or possibly didn’t even play prior?) so this could be a potential diamond type of pick up.
First

Golly, did someone say “developmental prospect”? I have this sudden hankerin’ to pass out some scholarships!
If he arm tackles, sign him up!
I wish he was here this year.

Stevie has really upped his game, now that he’s actually playing his position. I suspect Ethan will blossom in that role next year.
That still doesn’t excuse the lack of a simple press break in the toolbox.
Me neither.
https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/oregon-commits-violations-men-s-and-women-s-basketball-women-s-track-and-field-and-football
Too much CYA to cut through to get to the truth. It’ll all disappear in internal investigations which absolve anyone of anything.
It’s too bad the FBI wasn’t doing the same when the Pump brothers were in full force.
Sorta reminds you of the Clinton email mess, eh? Let’s see… give everyone immunity, then start the investigation.
Double standard? Nah, just being Democrats!
Who cares? They lost.
Please try to keep up.
Keep up with what? You? Ha ha. The guy who forgets to take his pills?
If Napoleon wants to go after Snowball for whatever, he can go right ahead and keep that campaign promise. Anybody who got immunity is compelled to speak the truth, because they can’t plead the fifth. So go get ’em, tiger!
The rest of us are wondering what the fuck Dumbshit is going to do to make him and us look more stupid than we looked yesterday… every day.
Lock her up!
Lock her up!
Four legs Good!
Two legs bad!
Hillary’s two legs are the equivalent of four legs in girth. How to does that play out on Animal Farm?
Wow.
I expected at least a species-specific reference to Snowball, not an admission that you’ve never read the book.
It makes me think you didn’t even read the various platforms of each of the candidates before you proceeded with your right to make an informed vote.
You’re a waffle.
I can accept that.

$2 beer would do the trick. $9 beer, not so much
Lowering beer to $2 would give the State patrol a workout and a reason to charge more for stadium security.
Interesting that the former head football coach likes the idea, and the former soccer guy doesn’t
Just win baby!
No Beavers on Bikey’s team.
https://aaf.com/arizona-hotshots/
Early playing time is a harder thing to sell when everybody gets to play 4 games and and still redshirt.
This team tackled like shit under Andersen and it was 1000x better than this year.
Didn’t you hear?
It’s the talent.
Seattle radio weighs in on Larry Scott:
Unique, for sure! Scott makes more than any of his contemporary commissioners while overseeing a conference that is paying its member institutions less than the other top conferences.
http://sports.mynorthwest.com/556871/oneil-pac-12-enough-of-larry-scott/
Jon Wiler has more on Scott, the replay fiasco, and Ed Ray bringing his “A” game to defend the status quo. Watch out for that “angry sports blogger mob”.
Read that again, Ray has seen“no adverse impact of sportswriter nastiness among supporters of the university”
https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/12/06/pac-12-officiating-controversy-emails-show-a-conference-in-crisis-reaction-from-commissioner-larry-scott-presidents-and-ads/
What Jack is really saying
“I personally think Scott is great, he is doing a fantastic job therefore every other person on the planet much think the same thing because I am incapable of believing anyone thinks differently than me”
You can’t even create a straw man well.
That was also strange.
Are you emotionally invested in Dolphin Boy?
You act as if you’re his latest side piece. That’s how irrational your defense of his really poor ideas is.
The irony in this post is astounding
Why not concentrate on those instead?
Hey dipshit, that post wasn’t a response at you
That’s new.
Wonder if this kid, Nate Overholt, is going to be the guy teams kick themselces for not offering, like Kellen Moore?
Set the all-time TD mark for the state of Oregon this year with 59, on 74% completion percentage, and only 2 INTs. And only 1 offer, to Davidson.
https://twitter.com/nate_overholt/status/1057853453303656449?s=19
Apparently, you’ve never been on a blog.
Did twitter doubling it’s character limit confuse you for a while?
If this was IRC, I could buy what you’re saying.

From the link
He looks a whole lot better than when he was here
Gary is Santa’s backup if Rudolph pulls a hammy.
How do clowns like this guy keep getting back into a coaching job. Wacked.
College admins are obsessed with coaches who “understand the culture” to a point of fault, some more than others.
It’s just an arbitrary stupidity.

Do they have any P5 offers?
No offers to speak of. We havent offered yet either
Sounds like our kind of guy.
Fuck….
Both look like they have good speed and agility; not sure about their physicality. We might as well offer them.
What are our odds on Vohasek? Also, I noticed we just offered an OL from N Bend with a P-State offer. This have anything to do with Liku or do you still think we are the favorite?
As always, thank you for the update.
Set1. #FTD
OK, Gopherbeaver — you got me. I haven’t a clue what your post means. Maybe a hint? :-)
He was gleefully reporting that the Gophers had won the first match in the volleyball payoffs against Oregon. He neglected to report that Oregon then won the next three matches and upset the #2 Gophers on their home court 3-1. Opps.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, this level of expertise for knowing cyber security by the cyber security chief is similar across the board in Dumbshit’s cabinet and admin.
Myles Powell with the iso stepback fade-away double clutch jumper for three to beat Kentucky.
Amazing shot.
Never mind… Kentucky just stole it back with a halfcourt shot. It’s going to OT.

#TPB 2.0 games may be more difficult to find than the original, yet worth the effort or expense just to watch that guy get destroyed.
Why would I give that guy any of my football time, good or bad… unless we play them?
schadenfreude?
A box score isn’t enough?
I’ll read it and chuckle and move on. He gets a box score read out of me… because I like to read box scores… not because of him… he gets the chuckle.
That pesky “key group of …boosters”………doesn’t every school have ’em? The secret to Barnes longevity?
Oh, and, “With most of the roster intact, the Utah State job was considered a turnkey, “win immediately” job among coaches.” TIME WILL TELL!
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/12/8/18131580/gary-andersen-utah-state-head-coaching-search
*osu
Interesting autocorrect on new phone
BG can back me up. Wiscy revenue sports are dysfunctional in a special way. I wouldn’t be surprised to find a Larry Nassar or two in their midst.
Hi Wiscy troll. This is the respect I have for your AD. And it’s earned from documented reports.
But they will be wearing Big Boy pants!
Sounds confirmed. RNB (Red Nosed Bastard) got the gig.

#TPB2
I’m watching top rank right now, and the first fight was a KO in a couple seconds.
I’m watching the post-fight, and dude’s got knuckles taped onto his hands.
Wtf?
Wow.
Was it Bill Walton?
Walton was doing the ND-UCLA game. Soon as I heard him I moved on.
Because your mute function is broken?
Not feeling as much of a schadenfreude entertainment factor with #TPB2 as with #TPB. With #TPB, everyone kept telling us Riley shat rainbows and glitter, so it was nice for people to get a reality check. Vindication. With #TPB2 (Those Pantsed Bastards?) everyone knows Anderpants sucks.
Maybe he’ll get lucky and Chuckie Keaton 2 will come to Logan.
Not a big surprise, buy Christian Wallace is leaving the program.
Been wondering if Omar Hicks was going to do the same, but haven’t heard anything
Wallace is no big deal but I think it would be nice to hold onto Hicks. Don’t really feel they can afford to lose any depth on defense right now.
MichSt wbb looking to knock off the LadyD*cks(that doesn’t look right) up 9 at the end of 3.
Is that the realtor’s cousin coaching Mich St? Ucks down 5 late.
Beavs gals coming up at 2pm, streamed by the school.
Link for WBB:
https://pac-12.com/live/oregon-state-university
Oh yeah, phils gals fell to UNRANKED Mich St, allowed a lot of layups.
Hell of a time for one of Stephen Thompson Jr’s worst games of his career. Beavers win with an average performance from him
Their lack of quickness exposed.
I hope you asked for permission before you checked out his handle.
Beavs revert to form, shooting 27% from 3 and <40% shooting overall for the game. Tough to win with those numbers. St. Louis even gave them a break by missing a ton of free throws, 15-32 at the line.
Anyone watching the WBB halftime show on the stream with the mascot game? I think Tinkle’s been coaching them.
Nope, they handled the ball too well.
They will beat Texas A&M
My Golden Rodents beat them in Vancouver. They play pretty tough physical D. Young but with some talent. Could be a TO fest for our beloved Beavs.
Had to look it up, and Santa Clara is 5-2 coming into this game. Hard to believe the way the basketgals are stomping them
How about Maddie Washington this year? IINM she has 1 PF in the last two games combined, playing just over 20 min each game.
Nice to see her get the start today and to see her playing more under control this year.
Ron Callan tweets his interview with her:
https://twitter.com/roncallan
Didn’t a back up QB the eagles to a SB victory?
Beavs offered a 2019 LongSnapper today, Dylan Black. It’s a PWO offer, in case anybody is wondering.
Former OSU D line coach, Chad K, was hired by SC today. Guess he wasn’t one of the idiots on GA’s staff. Word is according to FootballScoop that GA tried to bring him to Utah State but he chose the Titanic instead.
With Helton at SC and Anderpants at Utah State, which one’s the Titanic and which one’s the Hindenburg?
GA is definitely the exploding blimp.
I thought that was George Horton?
Women’s BB rankings out. Beaves still 8th but ducks fall to 7th. Interestingly south carolina drop 10 spots when they lost for the first time to a ranked team but the ducks only drop 4 to a unraked MSU. I know these rankings dont mean anything but still, what a joke.
Sounds like you have a soft spot for the lady cocks.
Sorry, dumb joke but I couldn’t stop myself.
Thoughts?
Yes. 4-3 is more forgiving of bad recruiting.
Is it? I thought the thinking was it’s hard to recruit quality DT’s, so 3-4 gives you more leeway.
Until they run into a team that has a few road graders?
Very few teams have those. Stanford. That’s about it.
NFL coaches complain that college offenses don’t prepare olinemen foe the NFL since they dont have to generate a push anymore and don’t have to sustain their blocks for very long. Pancake blocks are a relic of the past now due to spread offenses. Left tackles are no longer a prized player.
I’d bet USC and UW have some roadgraters also. Guarantee Ohio State did.
He played d-line for the beavs, if you didn’t already know that.
@blackbandits, I was just going to post that as well. I am hopefully that will help encourage him to stick around his alma mater
How many times to he bring up “arms, legs and mind”?
No mention that I heard. He does have a good QB in place though if he doesn’t run him of.
Good QB in place? Fuck that. Why would I play someone I didn’t recruit?
He should get Luton and Blount as transfers. #getting the band back together.
He said he thought the cheerleaders had nice legs and he wouldn’t mind getting getting his arms on one. So yeah, he brought it up.
Urban Liar agrees.
The college football world will be better with him not in it.
New Topic-first base expansion at Goss. Looking close to completion. Is it baseball season yet?
There were 2 JC DT’s I mentioned the other day here–> (http://angrybeavs.com/athletics/14179#comment-296248)
who could be getting offers in the near future.
James Rawls was just offered today. Probably means Myles Tapusoa passed on OSU after his visit.
Cole Bailey, you’re in the on deck circle(He hasn’t been offered yet)
Rawls HUDL link: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/4619340/5b974a8c4bb1fb026837d8ad
Or could mean we struck out on a DE, since it looks like he’s more likely to play that position.
Penn upsets Villanova. Beavs beat Penn by 16, so by the transitive property of sports, the Beavs should be ranked top ten.

No worries, you made the twitter feed anyway. You’re famous!
Thanks for the tip
What the Moyel said…
Regarding the 3-4 vs the 4-3.
Every system works when you get the talent.
I did like DEs system. Convert big safeties into linebackers, and big linebackers into defensive ends. Then watch them fly all over the field.
Might work vs today’s offenses. Speed is the name of the game.
LadyD*cks trail South Dakota State by 5 at half
Looks like Dwayne Williams is getting another year via medical hardship and then transferring.
No big loss there.
What’s it called? Addition by subtraction?
One less floppy-arms-flailing Klune tackler?
Omar Hicks-Onu is also transferring, per the Twitter. I know he has been hurt, but we are going to be thin in the secondary. At least it frees up a couple schollies for Niner to get his own recruits.
I haven’t seen anything announced yet. where are you seeing it?
A confused poster on Benny’s posted a screenshot of Dwayne’s message and attributed it to Omar because Omar had retweeted the message from Dwayne.
What’s Benny’s?
http://bennyshouse.com/thread/11390/omar-hicks-onu-transferring
I think it’s a Japanese steakhouse.
They have a great teppanyaki bar
http://bennyshouse.com/thread/11390/omar-hicks-onu-transferring
I’ve never seen that site before. who runs it?
I’m not certain but I think it may be someone from the old pure-orange site. I think you may have some Twitter followers over there too.
A variety of breakfast dishes, typically made by stacking an English muffin or biscuit with an egg and other toppings, then finished with a sauce, typically hollandaise. Now I’m hungry.
I screwed up. I saw Omar’s retweet of Dwayne’s announcement that said “business decision” and thought he also was announcing. My bad guys.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sulJSKwla6U
Did you maybe see Onu retweet that Williams is transferring and mistaken this for him announcing his own transfer?
Sounds like we might get graduate transfer Nathan Eldridge, who started 25 consecutive games with Arizona prior to missing this season with a knee injury. Oregon State is the presumed favorite given Eldridge’s relationship with run game coordinator/offensive line coach Jim Michalczik, formerly his position coach at Arizona. If his knee is good he could be a big help to us.
He plays center at 6-foot-3, 292-pounds.
A center on the roster? That’s crazy talk man….
On a side note: we’re at the 10 year anniversary of AB. 9 years of this format (the black wordpress site prior to this). The only guy I remember from both is Jack. Anyone else?
Next year we hit 10 years with this current platform, too. Crazy.
B-Day party!

State of Oregon beers?!?
Somebody built a wall of carrots at the border. We don’t hear from him anymore.
Oregon beers are still very good.
How about some carne asada cooked over hickory for an appetizer? Followed by my famous stuffed pablano peppers. Carrot cake for dessert!
Well… that’s crappy!
Are there no outreach organizations to help her? You could try an end-run for her sanity by getting an child-safety advocate to step in, assess the situation and fight for her.
That sucks. It should no longer surprise me what shitty things people do to others, esp their own children. Best of luck to you and your xsd.
10 years of Jack?
Music is life.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaa, Victoria Bitter. If it’s happening in Australia, VB is involved.
I’m a sucker for a good red. And Ninkasi’s Prismatic is tasty.
What a long, strange trip it’s been
Good work homie
What coach is rumored to be leaving the Beavs to go to a different Pac 12 team? Saw a tweet from Machado and the info is behind the paywall
Burns
To SC…
https://www.usc247.com/news/2018/12/8/clay-helton-offers-job-to-assistant-coach
I’m not to upset with this development. Doubt Angry is either. Pretty sure he was the defensive coach you were least enthused about from the get go.
Well maybe he and Bray.
I dont think Burns was very influential in recruiting or coaching, so if another team wants to help us hit the reser button on that position, it might be good to get someone with new/different connections on the staff.
Just hope Burns doesn’t poach guy from our class right before signing day, but I wouldn’t think we’re the direction USC would go.
Right now, it’s not USC we need to worry about when teams poach.
We’ll see what the after-effects are on 19-21Dec.
How good is Burns as a recruiter? As far as coaching goes, too early to say it’s a big loss
I think Hall is available. Rough life as a coach. Fired two years in a row.
I heard McElwain is keeping Hall on his staff.

Tavita Thompson too
What is Clay Helton’s philosophy when hiring? Go after defensive coaches with Oregon State experience?
The good news is they will be available for re-hire after next season.
Does the Twitter feed show up in the lower left corner for anyone else?
Yep, started this morning.
Weird, I will look into it.
Now there’s no Twitter feed.
I dont know who the new commit is, but if I had to make a guess, i would go with a local 2020 guy. John miller. Just a hunch.
Or Junior Walling from McNary, his dad played back in the 90s I think
Wouldn’t mind either/both of those guys. Im hoping there is a possibility it’s a 2019 guy so we can get some immediate help next season.
I’ve confirmed it but said i wouldn’t spoil it. There are enough clues out there to figure it out. It’s a very big(talent and star wise) pickup for the Beavs
Do you know when he is announcing?
I’ve asked if/when it will be made public but haven’t gotten a response
Or she.. some good female players out there, specifically kickers and we are in the market for one.
Have they already spoiled it on the pay sites?
Nothing on pay site yet, or at least not the one my father follows. Just talked to him and had him check.
Put Dock at CBs, Cookus at Safeties, and 9 should become ST coach.
If 9 wants to play sneaky trickster, he should at least do it when the worst outcome doesn’t kill a drive with momentum.
That’s actually a good idea.
I had the pleasure of working with Doc on my debate team at OSU before I knew who he was. One of the coolest guys I have ever met and just has an infectious attitude in a very good way. I think he would be a great fit. He is currently the head coach at one of the so cal high schools.
His only downfall is being a huge laker fan.
Site should be fixed now.
Layout is back to normal now, lookin’ good.

We should have hired that guy!
“Perhaps Gary made some mistake at OSU. Honestly, I couldn’t care less.”
WOW! Way to completely gloss over a track record of abject failure. Impressive!
Indeed. The current administration could clearly use him to spin some things.
“Gary’s coordinator and assistant coaching hires also reflect his exceptional commitment to the success and well-being of his players: he goes out and hires the finest coordinators he can possibly attract, thus giving his players the finest possible coaching and the greatest possible chance to succeed on the gridiron.”
His texts to Canzano would say otherwise.
In the end, he’s back down to a non-Power Five school, most of the college football world could give two shits. He will mostly be remembered for his bizarre move of leaving Wisconsin and then fucking up the Oregon St. program.
And adding “big boy pants” and “war daddy” to the lexicon.
Treading water/regressing while other conference teams move forward is fucking up.
Jack was right about “war daddy” have football origins
The phrase may have originated with Harold T. White, a coach at Mississippi’s Perkinston Junior College in the 1950s.
I couldn’t find anything about “big boy pants” having originated from football.
I stand by my opinion that GA fucked up the program for at least a couple of years.
GA took a jalopy with four flats, re-did the interior, and drove it until he ruined the rims.

I’m not able to find a reason for the Payton Dastrup denial by NCAA to play this year. I remember some discussion about it in the blog but would someone explain what’s going on there. Article in the Gazette Times and all others I can find are pretty vague.
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/basketball/osu-men-s-basketball-dastrup-seeks-out-a-chance-for/article_bcf49d9b-e85f-55aa-b4cf-57a41a3a68ce.html
What are the transfer rules? Guys like Jaquari McLaughlin are playing but are they in a lesser league?
For your podcast Angry, at the risk of stating the obvious, I guess recruiting and coaching (perhaps by position groups) would have to be a couple of the topics. Other thoughts might include state network with high school coaches, some of whom might make good guests and have some good ideas. And perhaps, for the next year or two anyway, how best to tap into the JC circuit.
By the way, I’m on google chrome at the moment and it’s showing this site as “not secure” if that’s of interest.
That’s just something the modern browsers are doing if you don’t use https (we use standard http). Is the Twitter feed showing? Sometimes it won’t show if the settings are locked down like that. In Firefox, the way around this is to click the little shield in the URL and allow 3rd party permissions. I’m not sure how exactly to fix it in Chrome since I never use it, but it’s probably something very similar.
https://www.sslforfree.com/
I use that for a lot of projects if client isn’t buying their own TLS cert for e-commerce. A bit of a hassle cause you’ve got to renew it fairly often but worth it imo.
If we sold stuff here I’d use https, but I don’t see the point given the subject matter…
Https via SSL is essentially the standard at this point and totally worth it just for the sizable SEO boost alone, regardless of content. Nothing to lose and a lot to gain kind of situation. E-commerce should use the newer TLS protocol.
Yes the twitter feed is showing — I’ll try your suggestion. Thanks
What the ducks have the number 1 recruit??? Lol _$$$$____$$$
Ncaa needs to hire Robert Mueller.
duck fans getting their chubby fingers sized up for rings prematurely, again.
Off-season championships are a thing.
Who’d they get for all that moola?
McMaryion lead FSU (11-2 and 21st overall) looking to take down ASU.
Yet he lost to the Golden Rodents.
2 picks and only completing 50% of his passes today. Looks like the running back is the one leading them to victory today.
McM used his legs to advantage today. 4 for 41, including a 10 yd TD in the second qtr and a 10+ yd scramble for a first down later.
But, Rivers was certainly deserving of POG today.
ASU went in as 5 pt dogs, couldn’t cover with their short handed offense.
Nice thing about next season is we won’t have to have McMaryion alert anymore. GG
We will, only in the NFL.
He’s a nice kid and all but the arm strength is not there to play in the NFL.
That’s cute
I could see him in the CFL, with his running abilities and short passing game.
I don’t remember him having the quicks to be an NFL slot receiver.
Yup, so glad we had Luton instead. Imagine how shitty Beav football would be if McM stuck around.
It would have been the same.
Well… whiny fans wouldn’t have had to rag on a kid for not yanking his promised redshirt for a lost cause… because of depth.
But that’s about it… unless you think he can play two ways as an ILB.
Sitting courtside tonight at the Rose Garden. Looks like we have another CBI team on the floor this year. They just are not very good.
Sad, but tend to agree.
There’s a ton of talent on the team.
And almost 20 turnovers?
This is just ridiculous hoops.
Just watched OSU play Texas A and M. We suck. The game in general sucked. I’ve seen better high games.
** high school
They way A and M started we should have murdered these guys. We murdered ourselves. Not to excited about coach Tinkle anymore.
Three what I would term “challenges” for MBB in the non-conference and they failed them all. NIce to see Tinkle and Junior rise to the occasion once again. I’m sick of this team, but at this point I don’t know what the alternative is?
Don’t watch basketball?
Not an option, Beaver fan through it all.
There is another team, that plays at Gill, worthy of watching
ST was terrible.
Hollins. WTF? He is worse than last year. Too weak to secure rebounds and misses critical front end FT’s down the stretch.
Tinkle shooting 66% FT? Dribbling too much and turning it over.
Ladies gag their game against A&M as well. Not a great day to be a Beaver.
Hollins also had 2 critically timed traveling calls that I remember.
Well that was the most pathetic sorry ass post I’ve ever read from a beaver fan, congrats
I get that the games are different but could Rueck replace Tinkle? Rueck knows the game and can recruit to Oregon State.
Tinkle is signed through 2022 with 6.6 million owed. We’re screwed.
You’re not thinking it through to its conclusion.
TL;DR
Don’t be a Dilbert.
Better hope Purdue doesn’t need bodies.
JJ transferring out?
I don’t think they’ll be any flips in the early signing period.
This class is pretty meh. No clear standouts or clearly under recruited guys. Not sure how Jefferson slipped by so many other teams last year.
Outside of the jc guys, I expect the rest to redshirt.
Wonder if the coaches can make some strides in Jan to make the class somewhat respectable. Need a QB but there’s not much left out there.
Ethan already signed
Signed what, financial aid agreement?
Don’t think those binding. I think you could even have financial aid agreements with multiple schools. Wednesday is the first day any 2019 guy can truly be official.
He signed November 14th
https://mobile.twitter.com/ChrisMillerQB/status/1062776901570224129
Letter of Intent
Looks like a ceremonial signing day at his high school maybe? November 14th is a signing day for most other sports, but not football. Football has it’s own separate dates (Dec 19th and Feb 6th) plus a JUCO period around Jan 15th.
So Long may have signed a piece of paper in front of his classmates in November, but it wasn’t binding at that time.
Yeah there was a big ceremony that day with all the signees
Interesting read on a high school kid from Indiana and the death of the FB in college football:
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2810851-run-charlie-run-70-touchdowns-later-high-school-back-still-seeking-attention
Rule changes favoring the offense is why the full back has died out.
He benches 420 pounds!
Recruit him. Now.
Who knew Sean Harlow had a little brother who plays OL in the 2019 class?
Jack Harlow might be a name to keep an eye out for as we get closer to wrapping up the 2019 class.
His teammate Jeffrey Persi is a 2020 OL guy we offered pretty early on. He has several teams interested in him
Jack is a walkon candidate. Don’t expect to see an offer going out.
He must play really poorly on his non-highlight plays, because this is pretty decent stuff.

He’s constantly moving his feet. He slides laterally very well. He plays forward and keeps leverage in the mush. He’s a coach’s son…
… and we need a center.
Persi (79-RT) has flat feet and gets whipped a lot. But he’s young, has the size for OT and plays for an O-line coach.
I’ll have to grab the podcast later, but Coach Smith and Coach Tibesar are/were on Joe Beaver today. anybody here(oob? scotty?) who listened to it, was there anything interesting?
Missed it. Will need to pod. Did MP ask the obvious question to Tibanker? (JK obviously not)
Looks like the 2019 baseball roster is up.
Defense should still be solid.
Easley went pro
Is there any chance on Siale coming? He is announcing Wednesday?
Justin Herbert to NFL…Fields from Georgia to UO?
Is that official?
None of that is real. Fields will go to a school that has a shot at the playoffs. Herbert should turn pro now. His stock won’t go any higher. 2020 will have a strong QB class.
Sounds like Kylor Kelly is right around double digit blocks tonight. Already has the school record, and counting
Nearly a triple double tonight 10pt, 9 reb, 9 blk
9 blocks. Might of had a shot at a triple double with one more rebound and one more block. Too bad Tinkle sat him. Nice game though.
Nice summary, thanks.
Need to get an edge rusher with some TEETH!
What was up with Garcia this year? Too much time off?
Downside of these transfers, other than gumbs, all lost position battles at previous school.
To be fair, Frost wanted his guy not Gebbia.
Let’s hope this is similar to when Anderpants let McMaryion so he could have his own guy.
Beavs picked up JC DE Simon Sandberg today. Sweedish kid. He’s been injured so it’s tough to say how good or bad he is, but he’s another body to help bolster the DL next year.

Other offers include Northern Arizona and Incarnate Word.
Word.
How many years of eligibility does he have?
The lack of offers is obviously a concern but this team needs college ready bodies and hopefully he is coming in January and maybe the injuries mean OSU found that rare diamond in the rough.
There is an article on beaverblitz (on the above mentioned link) that said that UCLA and
Boise State had shown interest in him just lately.
After some quick googling he appears to be a 4 years to play 3 guy and is from Sweden so I doubt he got much coaching prior to attending a JC (or possibly didn’t even play prior?) so this could be a potential diamond type of pick up.
