Football signing day 2019

189

Signing day is Dec 19th. I’ll update this thread from time to time throughout the day tomorrow. I’ll start out by listing our expected signees tonight and then move them to the “signed” category as they come in throughout the day.
A few more will fall under the potential signees category as well.
There will be no shortage of free info available on the OSU athletics page tomorrow as they have a page dedicated to signing day, so I don’t plan to waste much time writing up bios or linking film for players. Feel free to add that information down below in the comments, if you want.

Should be a boring day(probably a good thing)and I don’t expect much in the way of surprises, but you never know.  GoBeavs

Update: All of the expected signees have been made official.  Now the waiting game for guys like Liku and Trevon Clark happens.  I don’t have a good feeling for either being Beavs at the end of the day(especially Clark) but we’ll have to wait and see.  Day has been about as boring as expected.  Means Smith and his staff had executed their plan and didn’t have many loose ends to deal with today, so in that sense I think the staff did pretty well today.

Joe Beaver show should have a pre-recorded interview with Coach Smith today around noon, where he’ll likely have a recap of the different players we’ve brought in.

Potential Signees(not necessarily early signing period signees):
Siale Liku-OL

Ray Vohasek-JC DE
James Rawls-JC DE

  1. A full recruiting cycle with out landing a scholarship prep QB is concerning. Colletto beat out Willard and Moore so that doesn’t leave one super excited about the depth behind Gebbia.

  2. Blah blah blah. Why should we care? Blah blah blah 3-8, yay that’s great! Blah blah blah. OSU signs a class worse than 80% of college football. Another recruiting year, honestly what difference does it make? I don’t see anything changing anytime soon.

  3. This class is not very classy.

Not a good sign to be the only p5 offer for most of these kids. Nice kids bad football players.

And so the perpetual loop of football failure goes…

    • Depth, depth, and depth. We’re in dire need of depth on defense, and that’s exactly what we’re getting in this class. Offense will be better next year with Gebbia. If Jermar Jefferson can shine behind our bad offensive line, then I have a little bit more faith in the body type the coaches are recruiting, rather than who else is recruiting the players.

    • Yep, and it’s a good thing that a bad college football team has no effect on our success as normal people in society. Just gives us something to complain about when we get bored with being thankful for how fortunate we really are.

    • Based on the offers most of these kids appear to be smart hard workers. Those kind of kids will develop.

Yeah, most probably aren’t ready to play PAC football today but give them a year or 2 in the system and I think several will develop into PAC level players. That is what you have to do to rebuild a program. It takes time.

Expecting them to get guys other P5 schools want after the last few years is frankly expecting too much. It is simply not going to happen. A school in their position has to take chances on either developmental types or highly talented guys that have academic/character risks. I prefer taking the developmental approach early and maybe sprinkle in some risks in a year or 2 once the culture is established.

      • It’s odd that when we accept this recruiting system in this context, it’s reasonable. But when we employ the same system when the program should be rising or is on the cusp, pollyannas are condescending to those who expect comparatively more from the program.

We’ve put up with the last six years, just like we put up with the 28 years. We’re still here. The coaches who quit on OSU are gone.

“Have faith in them,” you said.

“A zebra can’t change its stripes,” we said.

Good luck with all that misplaced faith.

Developmental players are what we need right now… that, and development of the talent already on the roster. There will be gems here and there, like JJ. But even gems need development to hold up to the grind of a full college season.

We get to see how said development of the players currently on the roster pans out next year, the first full season/off-season cycle for this staff. I suspect it will be somewhat decent (“surprising” to the experts). We’ll be hearing about those players coming off the scout team and graduating from ST duty.

        • I don’t have faith this will happen.

I expect it to happen, given 9’s history of development in previous jobs. Year three should come with an expectation to be out of the cellar and competing on a weekly basis in conference games.

      • 100% right on! Oregon State needs to recruit the kind of players Boise State has been recruiting for years. Players who are under the radar, hard working, have a swagger chip on their shoulders, fast, bought into the program, and players who want to be there! Boise State had great coaching with Petersen, Jonathan Smith learned from him. So we will have to wait and see how this staff develops the players. OSU has coaches who can coach, they have an uphill battle to climb, but I like what they’re doing so far.

    • Ooh, do tell how many offers your glorified jersey models had; will that help them play as a team? The discrepancy between recruiting rankings and actual performance has been a little disappointing. Was it the giant jersey numbers that finally sold them, or is that more for uncle phil$ failing eyesight?

  4. Recruiting rankings are far from infallible anyway.

I’d bet that your holes would rather have 3* Marcus Mariota than 4* Braxton Burmeister right about now, just like the OSU staff would rather have 2* Jordan Poyer over 4* Christian Wallace.

Sometimes it shakes out the way it’s “supposed to”, more often it’s the coaching/scheme that proves to be more important.

  5. So, in a quick review, distribution looks about like:

    DT – 4
    DE – 4
    LB – 6
    S – 1
    CB – 2

    OL – 2
    QB – 1
    RB – 1
    WR – 2
    TE – 2

Which generally looks about responsive to roster needs. If they are “for depth,” that would be a disappointing argument because the defensive starters are currently inadequate. If they are smart, disciplined players that tackle well, that helps. A concern I have I have is if there are not difference makers that can swing some games and add to the win column, that players get used to and accept losing.

    • “for depth” is not an argument, it is simple reality.

OSU isn’t going to get instant impact guys, those guys simply have better options.

        • Name the last “instant impact” player that was obviously going to be an “instant impact” player on signing day?

Of course, it is possible some of this years class end up having an instant impact but those aren’t the guys people are talking about on signing day. When someone wants instant impact on signing day they are talking about 4 and 5 star guys. Not a 3 star guy that surprises everyone.

The reality is that the vast majority of the recruiting class is going to be depth guys not instant impact guys.

          • I don’t know what people you were listening to, but Hodgins and Jefferson were high end PSAs. They probably wouldn’t have played as much as they did on teams with more depth. So instant impact is a little relative. But they were expected to contribute nicely in year one, given the circumstances.

As the team gets better, that bar gets raised. But the impact isn’t necessarily lessened. It’s just directed at practices and depth, where those players try to prove themselves. I think we’ll see who is and isn’t truly impact going forward. Keeping depth and development in mind, the four game window for redshirting will allow the coaches to determine who is and isn’t game-ready, even at different times during the season.

          • Hodgins was a 4 star so not sure what your point on him is?

I do not recall the assessment that Jefferson was expected to be an impact player on signing day. Do you have any links indicating this?

I am sure a few of this years group will be impact guys but again when people say they want “impact” guys they are saying they want 4 and 5 star guys.

Note: I never claimed OSU can never or has never gotten 4 and 5 star guys. I said expecting that THIS YEAR is a pie in the sky expectation.

          • Jermer Jefferson *** – Solid all around back, though nothing special stands out on film. He lacks breakaway speed and doesn’t have great cutting ability, but he’s highly productive playing strong competition.

From February on this site. Sure doesn’t sound like a guy people expected to be a Frosh All American or really even all that much of an impact.

          • JJ was a known quantity at that time. He was obviously better than all our RBs, save Pierce. Frosh AA? No. But a P5 RB who would contribute as a frosh… yes.

I didn’t know Hodgins was a 4*. I honestly don’t care. He obviously has a motor, and we needed Dline help immediately.

Regardless, neither would have played on the two-deep if we had depth. Injuries (which are common) would have likely put them on the field in some capacity. And maybe one or both show up late in the season due to fresh legs against tired teams. But they wouldn’t have been thrown to the wolves immediately.

But wouldn’t they still be considered impact players?

  6. Was there any coverage of this today? Can’t/couldn’t find any links to them sitting down and discussing the recruits. Usually Parker sits down and talks for hours with the coaches.

    • I agree and don’t understand the negativity.

The transfers are all 4* who were all Top 150 players. All played as Freshmen (Gebbia would have had he not bounced) at more competitive programs then ours. No matter what they’re all upgrades.

You’ve got 2 legit DT’s with the late addition of Whittley. I think Bennett is going to be a beast.

Several of the lower star guys committed to us early and shut down their recruitment, thus essentially killing there star potential. Speights has game changer LB potential. Gould is lightning fast.

Could be a little bit orange glasses but It looks more like a diamond in the rough class feel to me then a low hanging fruit. Major difference between what we’ve seen in the past is how early all these dudes committed. With Riley it was more of a last minute struck out on other options deal.

    • Smith sortof dodges a “transfers” question with a smile, and also mentioned earlier he could see us adding some OL help “around February or later”

So might be a little while till we hear about Eldridge, but also wouldnt be surprising if he had another transfer in the works.

      • What’s the prediction of how many more players we will take after today is complete? Assuming you set aside 1 spot for Eldridge. There are many players in the portal now for transfers. Let’s get a couple more instant impact guys.

          • If it holds back the development of younger players, absolutely. With already 4 transfers this year, that’s enough. 1 or 2 year guys are not the ones to go after now.

Transfers are useful when the team needs a push over the top but not during rebuilding. Already went through this with GA. Didn’t work then.

          • Did u not see the 4 to play 3? That’s plenty of time to develop especially with the red shirt year still available. U take the center transfer for sure imo.

          • You know what helps a rebuild the most? Getting better players.

You know how you get better players? Win games.

You know what would help the team win games? Players that are ready to step in a play right now.

If you can get those players, you go get those players. A couple grad transfers is a smart choice for the program, adding other transfers to help in 2020 is a smart choice for the program.

            Simple as that.

          • Balance needs to be considered too when bringing in transfers. Currently, our Junior class for next season is going to be pretty small(something like 12 scholarship guys).
When they graduate, we won’t end up with very many open scholarships to sign new guys in the 2021 class. So by adding some Junior level transfers rather than more freshman in this class, we could help alleviate that. You’re only allowed 25 incoming players(transfers & HS combined) per class. There’s not much wiggle room to work with unless you can re-classify guys down or up a year by making them mid-year transfers. Or you can convert some walkon guys to scholarship after they’ve been in the system for a couple of years. It’s a balance Smith has to factor into every roster decision.

      • I thought that was a pretty good presser. I enjoyed Smith’s demeanor and responses. He seems very comfortable, focused, and has intent and comes across as genuine. His answers are brief but obviously some thought put into differentiating the recruits, even mentioning GPA performance for a few, which is probably a means of further motivating their academic efforts through recognition. He mentions thoughtful approach to weight training to reduce injury risk…I liked that he mentions looking for a willingness to tackle despite what position they play.

There also seems to be a theme of recognizing the importance of balance for the student athletes in terms of football, the college experience, and academics. That kind of balance is likely to benefit the student-athlete and the program.

        • I agree that it was a pretty good presser for what it was. Stood out to me that he seems pretty high on Gebbia, his body language and verbiage went beyond the typical “did some good things” lines he reverts to diplomatically when commenting on individual players.

Overall I’m cautiously optimistic about the class, but it’s heavily contingent on those 4 transfers panning out as consistent contributors/play-makers.

  7. thanks,, OOB. lots of good stuff in there. Basically, Casey has telegraphed his intention to return, all the while getting some good exposure to the world of an AD, should he ever want to go that route. Love the plan for finishing the right field bleachers next and building some training infrastructure underneath it.

  8. Liku goes to UCLA. 3* DT or OL. Was hoping Smith would beat Kelpy out for him but was assuming Beavs would miss out. A miss for a contributor.

  9. The transfers make it a decent class……..assuming they are not PITA’s. The QB is the key.
JS needs to identify and lock up a very good prep QB for ‘20 early, so he can be a recruiter for the rest of the class.
It appears that they have sought out kids that are good students and citizens. Low risk is the key to build the foundation. It reminds of a Kill class at MN, except for actually having a QB that throw a football. That strategy can get you to respectability, but to become good he will need to hit some triples and home runs in recruiting.
I wonder if it was a strategy by JS to leave some slots open to capture some kids who may get left without a seat at the table?

  10. A couple more in state guys still plan to visit OSU in January. Kicker Jeff Nelson from Clackamas and OL Jacob Ferenczi. I think JF is the only one with a scholarship offer of the 2

    • I saw Nemacs low-hanging hit piece on the recruiting class and lol’d. Sent him some feedback and promptly got the block.

He passes all this judgement on JS and co for not being flashy and dynamic recruiters that could close a bunch a 4-5 star kids, as if that is even remotely what they’re intending to be or how they went after kids this cycle. He seemed to be under the impression that OSU swung and missed and settled for less but the vast majority of our class was targeted and committed way early.

My sense of things is that JS came in with a long-term plan focused on culture with modest performance benchmarks that are years out and apart from eachother, and that he’s sticking to it. Just seems like that kinda guy with that kind of approach. He doesn’t come across as a guy that’s chasing that a-ha moment of when the program has “flipped”.

I don’t know what kind of flashy recruiter could sell a full stack of 4 star athletes on OSU right now, and I wouldn’t want that dude to even try, cause good luck with that. To me the approach is underwhelming as a fan, but ultimately seems like the smart play knowing the limitations of the program in its current state.

    • Apparently the O thinks the wbb duck win over a low tier team is more important coverage wise. Hardly a peep about the Beav win over Duke. Just the O covering the O I guess.

    • Went to the Duke game and was impressed with Washington’s and Grymek’s improvement. Both seemed to have made significant strides in their game since first few games. Grymek seems more confident offensively and is starting to make an impact on the defensive side. Washington is starting to look for her shot and demonstrated the ability to play with her back to the basket as well as a face up for the little 8-10 footer. Of course the rest of the team that played, showed very well for the most part although a bunch of missed point blank shots. I have a feeling this team will continue to improve and develop their low post game as the season moves forward. Certainly play with much more effort and emotion than the mechanical, robotic men’s team. Overall, men’s CBB is not watchable and the women’s game is much more enjoyable and entertaining.

  11. Hey Nicebeaver, read on Blitz’s recruiting recap that Whitley only has 1 year of eligibility. Seems odd for a jc transfer. Any insight as to why?

    • Spent most of his first 2 years in JC injured with knee issues. Was a running back at the time. Moved to DT for his junior year. Was originally a class of 2014 guy at SJSU but never qualified.

My guess is he never joined a team in 2014, then got his eligibility started in 2015 at the JC level, used a redshirt, then was injured in most of 2016/2017, then played most of 2018 and now has 1 year left.

So I guess he could potentially apply for a 6th(7th?) year, given the injuries, but doesn’t seem like a good case for that since he is coming from the JC ranks and didn’t qualify initially.

So a question for you all, do you feel confident we’ll be seeing Whittley suit up next year? Sortof his last shot at making this football thing a career. Hope it all works out for him.

  12. The opening script favored Pitt from the coin toss. Before it, actually. For some reason, Oregon State was so hellbent on wearing its home orange jerseys that it sacrificed a timeout for a penalty because of an unsanctioned uniform, which was assessed on Pitt’s opening kickoff.

“Shame on them,” legendary CBS sportscaster Verne Lundquist jokingly lamented as Beavers coach Mike Riley was shown smiling on the sideline while the officials announced the rule.

    From article:
    https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/Pitt/2018/12/21/Worst-bowl-game-ever-pittsburgh-panthers-oregons-state-beavers-2008-sun-bowl-el-paso/stories/201812200121

I can’t believe Riley ever aloud something like this. Sounds like too much fun going on here.

    • Good stuff – Bostick: “I remember Michael Irvin was there, on our sideline. He knew coach Wannstedt, and I just remember how fragrant Michael Irvin was. He had great cologne on. Those are the things you remember when you lose, 3-0. You remember everything else but the actual game.”

    • If there’s anything I remember about that game, it’s this:
      1. Butler and Laybourn played well… and Bubba was everywhere making hay.
      2. Hekker showed his potential, not just an outlier in an otherwise mediocre special teams career.
      3. Sammie was sure fun to watch.
      4. Nothing is better than watching a flaccid penis of a man like Shady McCoy get shut down, like the flaccid penis of a man he is.

    • Don’t look at me.

I hunkered down for depression after St Louis.

I honestly don’t know what Tinks’ overall plan is for this program. He has some players. He plays a couple of them… sometimes. The guys who shoot the ball seem to meander in a half-assed (half-ass? halved ass?) manner until they receive a double-clutched perimeter pass that might or might not have been intended for them.

If our coach has no clue that it takes a whole team to beat anyone, why should I bother to watch him have no clue?

  13. It’s time for Tinkle and his staff to go. The program is gonna be stuck as long as he’s the HC. They aren’t gonna be sniffing the ncaa tournament again anytime soon as long as he’s around

    • My patience has almost run out. Beating up on the sisters of the poor and losing to teams in the top100 of the NET rankings will not get them to the NCAA tournament. Especially with the perception of the conference as weak sauce.

As I have stated numerous times in the past. They need to stop playing this running style offense (or whatever poor attempt at it that it is) and get back to playing slow it down, lock down defense like they did in year 1.

        • Yes.

“To Beaver Nation: You will get 100 percent effort each and every Saturday,” said Eldridge in his tweet. “I look forward to earning your respect and excited to become part of Beaver Nation!”

As a redshirt freshman in 2016, Eldridge started all 12 games for Arizona, and in 2017, he started all 13 games and was an honorable mention for the All Pac-12 team. Eldridge was one (sic) the Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List coming into the 2018 season, but missed the entire season with what is believed to have been a knee injury.

Eldridge was recruited by Jim Michalczik when he was at Arizona.

2019 will be Eldridge’s redshirt senior season but he could possibly be granted a sixth year of eligibility.

          https://oregonstate.rivals.com/news/oregon-state-beavers-land-impact-graduate-transfer-nathan-eldridge

      • I had a DM conversation with Nemec where i was telling hin he should do a write up on Eldridge(this was a little after it was made public he was on visit)
Nemec didnt want to write about the guy, because he didnt think he’d be coming to OSU and would weigh his options and likely end up elsewhere. I told him multiple times it was nearly a done deal but he didnt want to make any effort. F that guy.

  14. So if you count Eldridge as a 4* and Speights in this class as a 4*, plus the four other transfers, threre are 6 four star players in the class. Not bad, if they can all play. Two or three of those guys will be sitting out a year? Hopefully Eldridge’s speculated knee injury is better by the time the season starts.

    • Nemec is in an orgasmic frenzy over the Ducks recruiting class, far be it for him to give any press to a Beaver recruit who is already a PROVEN high caliber P-12 lineman.

      • It’s great too the clucks aren’t top five anymore, they are #6 with a chance to drop to 8 spending on where a few other top 15 guys end up. That hasn’t stopped every local radio station from crowing them the 2019 recruiting champions.

        • Kind of like all of the 2018 preseason hype about Justin Sherbert (soft vanilla) as a Heisman candidate. Just like the 2018-19 hype about Ducks men’s basketball all everything team. It’s the Ducks hype machine hard at work. As usual, they over-promise and under deliver. They were all in with Chip, got close, couldn’t get it done. Same thing with Women’s softball and Mike White, couldn’t get it done. Same thing a few years ago with Men’s college basketball, got close couldn’t get it done. And, now, the Women’s basketball team….all in but will ultimately fail again. But the Duck hype machine continues while the results speak for themselves…no National Titles in basketball, football or baseball. I suppose there is the 1939 Tall Firs thing the Ducks hang their hats on LOL, Golf where they won by default and, yes, the track thing (equivalent of the NASCAR left turn circuit). Try as hard as they can, the Ducks fall short time and time again.

          • The Webfoots won an unsanctioned tourney called the NABC Championship. It was susch a flop, that the NCAA had to buy it from the NABC and move it to NYC.

No matter what Terry Frei says, the Webfoots were not national champions. They also couldn’t beat the actual national champions the following year, although, the two best players from LIU and one of the best from Nikegon were gone… so there’s no use for anyone to even bring that game up for this conversation.

It’s a sad legacy. It’s like claiming the NIT championship now… at best.

    • Where do you get the “Two or three of those guys will be sitting out a year” part?
Eldridge and Gumbs should be healthy and cleared to play before Spring camp and nobody else has any eligibility issues. Not sure if Speights reports early but he would be ready for Fall camp too(all pending no other injury setbacks)

      • It was a question. Thanks for the clarity. That’s good news that all these guys will all contribute next year.

BTW Goes tweets that it’s a “sneaky-good” recruiting class.

It would be nice to know who reshirted last year that will make a major contribution this year.

  15. If the six four star recruits live up to their billing and all become starters, one would think the Beavs would be improved next season. That’s about 30% of the starting 22. As always with recruiting, that’s a big if as the highest ranked Beav recruits of recent vintage like Wallace, Thompson, Evans and Kuli did not pan out.

Another thought, as the team gets better, they have to find a clutch kicker. 3-9 would have looked better than 2-10 for Smith’s first season. In theory, there will be more close games down the road.

    • You could probably also count David Morris as another 4* addition to the defense next year. Sure, he’s not new to the team, but he spent most of the season injured last year and he showed as a true freshman he fit the 4* tag he was given during recruiting.
Jay Irvine will hopefully have a healthy season too. The defense has quite a few more quality players to work with next year. Injuries and the DL will still be a concern, but they have a ton more bodies.

I still think OL will be the weak link next season. That and overall defensive scheme/coaching needs to improve. They won’t have any built in personnel excuses next year.

And of course kicking needs to improve. Either Choukair figures it out or we need to start developing some walk on freshmen. Hopefully Serna finds time to work with out kickers too.

      • +1 on Morris (and, to a lesser extent Irvine). No reason to think he’ll not be one of the top players on the D. (of course, I was just as high on Old Man Willis and we now know how that turned out!).

Kicking: I’m sure Choukair had plenty of misses in both Spring and Fall last time around; only got the job because: 1) Did a good job in final scrimmage (?) and 2) Competition was sub-par (?)

It would be a gumcheweresque neat story if he came around but I have serious doubts. Serna made an immediate and lasting turnaround after his LSU faceplant; Choukair has established more of a continuing record of being unreliable.

I do like the idea of Serna helping one of the possible new kickers mentioned earlier. In his position I don’t think he can be an on field coach even in Spring……..am I mistaken?
Even if he cannot directly coach, can he act as a sports psychologist in helping with the all important mental aspects? Practice psychology w/o a license……..lol

    • I wondered about Audette. I liked his film, and I wasn’t sure if we recruited him as OL or DT. Anyone know what happened there? Wasn’t Craig Francois, OLB the other kid who never ended up on the roster?

      • Neither Audette or Francois is a Beav. Both signed but never came to OSU(change of heart, I think)
So those were 2 big whiffs from last year’s class as you can’t replace guys who sign within the same class. Wasted spots from the 2018 class

        • Got ya, thanks. I wasn’t sure if it was grades, health, etc. Audette still has his Twitter picture of him in his Beaver Jersey, and I was hoping that meant he was a gray shirt or something.

      • They both showed up for the BRIDGE program and decided to leave school. That is what I was told. There never was any formal announcement from the the coaches or journalistic coverage, that I am aware of.

      • True. And yet he is the one with a permanent position while The Real Bob appears infrequently as a “contributor”…….where’s the justice!!

Add to that the guy the GT kept in his place, apparently due to seniority,………Lundeberg just gets no respect. But he’s young, lots of time for Karma to act.

    • Fuck that. What kind of noise does this maroon think he warrants?

Maybe he’s dumbshit enough to think an idea, like the Islamic State, is dead.

Why do we even talk abut this puffy (more than puffy, lately) loser? Why do I have to spend any time reminding people that reading their bullshit might lead to poor information plus lies… plus poor information?

At least he’s not some six-time bankrupt businessman posing as someone who knows something about something.

      That would be fraud.

      • oh yeah… fake news.

        bleat,bleat, bleat, bleat…….

Gubmint bad, smart people bad. Let’s murder people who wear glasses, because glasses man your’re smart.

Yeah… never heard of Pol Pot.

  16. Thoughts about the Nemec issue:

He hardly puts any thought or research into what he reports on Oregon State. He is so infatuated with recruiting that he cannot see the obvious. These fanboys, like Nemec, that celebrate a good recruiting class like it is winning the National championship is laughable.

They have lost touch with reality. In their world they would be happy having the National Championship be replaced with the subjective ratings of a signing class in the early signing period to declare the best college football team. This is how much emphasis they place on something that is about the 3rd or 4th most important thing in running a good football program. It makes me laugh.

I enjoy following recruiting about as much as you can, but I cannot believe how some of these people lose focus on what is really important. Let’s churn out 15 articles about how impressive a recruiting class is, but only 5 articles about a team that actually won a league championship. This is the type of stuff you see at the little o.

Not counting all the new incoming athletes is a laughable way of ranking recruits. Weighting the ranking of a class by size is also comical. As long as these recruiting sites rank in this way they will not have true credibility. Class size is completely determinate on how many scholarship players were lost. Recruiting does not end when the player arrives at school. You need to retain said player in order to actually reap any benefit of the recruit. A coach that actually does an excellent job in retaining athletes should never have a class greater than 20 recruits. By ranking the class higher based on the number of recruits you reward running off players in favor of new ones to look good in recruiting.

When a team averages close to 8400 per recruit, but is ranked behind many schools 8200-8300 because of class size, exactly what are you proving? That the school with average recruits of 8200 is better off than the school that brought average 8400 recruits in and retained the past average 8400 recruits? All because the one school is bringing in more new players because they have room?

The 2019 Oregon State class has the 2nd highest average per recruits on 247 since they have kept track. Granted the ranking for recruits has increased gradually over the years, making this comparison have very little validity. The past 10 years are a pretty good comparison, though. The highest average recruiting class ever was 2010 at 8501. This same class was ranked 62nd in the country because they “only” brought in 17 players.

So what should Nemec use as a benchmark for ranking Oregon State’s class? Obviously, not the ucks class as he appears to be doing. The fact that we brought in most of the highest ranked talent from the state should have a lot of merit. The fact that we have 4 transfers coming in that were ranked in the top 100 recruits out of high school should carry a lot more weight. Which by the way is how many top 100 recruits that the ucks have as well. This is something that a coaching staff at Oregon State has never done. The fact that 247 is ranking this class as the second highest average per recruit should have a lot more weight. Why should Coach Smith be denigrated in his recruiting ability when he is doing so much better in retaining recruits than his peers? A recruit retention grade would be really illuminating.

My long rant is over. Hopefully it is beneficial to some.

      • What numbers?

The arbitrary rankings that have a deviation of about +/-30%?

Any statistician who brings those numbers would get laughed out of the room. I know enough to know what I don’t know. anemec (or anyone on these recruiting sites) proposing that their arbitrary numbers have any meaning is the polar opposite.

      • Agree. But the funny part is the numbers are there, they just choose to ignore them. The 69th national ranking has about 10 teams ranked higher that brought is less quality recruits. They already ranked the transfers and have the ability to add them to the rankings. They keep track of who recruits their region best. They could easily factor into their ranking a team’s ability to foster good will with the main fan base in the the region.

        • I think the reason given by Machado why they don’t rank the transfers was because it would be too difficult.

Think about that. Too difficult for a group that’s sole purpose is to arbitrarily rank athletes. It would be too difficult to rank athletes they’ve already ranked.
Yet they re-ranked all 3 of the JC transfers. Just no time to rank the 5 D1 transfers. 5 is more than 3 I guess, so now we know their workload limit.

I saw somebody else(duck fan) say, those guys were only 4* out of highschool, so they shouldn’t count……….

          • And this is what pisses me off about Nemec in a a way. His job is recruiting analyst or something like it yet he relies on the rankings of others to come to conclusions. No interviews of players/coaches or breaking down of film. Fucking lazy ass.

    • There is no anemec issue if you don’t pay attention to anemec.

      It’s as simple as that.

But if you want to keep bringing him up, I will keep pointing out that we live in a country whose standards allow a fraudulent loser of a pseudo-man to be POTUS. Holding anyone at the Groanian to this standard, they should be getting pulitzers for every piece they write.

      • Why do you consistently bring up Trump? Why why why? Get over it snowflake. I think you secretly luuuuvvvv Trump, or you are just obsessed with him. You two do have a lot in common though now that I think about it. You both have random, incoherent rants in the middle of the night and a “elitist” mentality that you are always right and everyone else is wrong and stupid. You sure you didn’t vote for your boy jax? You guys sound very similar… Grow up old man, you sound like a whiney teen comparing they didn’t get picked as the home coming queen.

        • I was thinking the same thing. I come here to here about the Beavers not watch fox news and MSNBC. I did just figure out the ignore button though.

        • Get over what?

Get over the complete emarrassment that is the executive branch of my United States Government every damn day?

Get over the corruption and stupidity and cronyism that is in my face every god damned day?

It appears you’re the snowflake here, snowflake. This is the standard of the state of the nation you wanted.

          This.

          Nothing else.

You better pucker up a little more, just like Old Bone Spur does with that thing on the front of his head. You’re a sucker, yet to admit it. And this is what you will get for at least another two years.

Two years of the spray-tanned pseudo-man. Two years of that reality banging out juvenile “gut” reactions to very serious, proven proceedings. Two years of some African-general-as-autocrat mentality running the everyday business of the country I live in.

So yeah… fuck you if you don’t care about my country. I do every day. Unlike Dumbshit, I am still open for business. I don’t get paid to go golfing all the time. Shutting down my business doesn’t mean I get paid, regardless. I don’t have criminals paying me to launder their money. I pay my subs and vendors… on time… always.

I could run a casino and not lose money, while not hiring illegal aliens to staff it… and paying all the subs and vendors their due… like an adult who is in the right does.

anemec follows this pattern with his laziness. But you can’t really blame him. It’s not like that lousy excuse for ad revenue has any proper reporting going on. Dolphin Boy is going off on some dumb conspiracy “hot take” on a daily basis. I stopped reading once I realized he was just projecting his own failed and hypocritical moral ambiguity. He knows what’s right only by what sells ads. If you flood the world with bullshit, people eventually settle for bullshit. That’s supply-side economics for you.

You should put it on a plate, son. It’ll taste better.

        • Oh… hey, snowflake…

If you wanna bring up anemec, I’m gonna compare him to other lazy, ignorant people with obviously poor eating habits.

      • This is the first time I mentioned him. I agree with you. One of my points was to illuminate why we should not give anemic to much attention or credence.

        • Was Nemec doing Duck basketball recruiting stuff? I chuckle how the hype has died down now that the team has four losses. The Oregonian seemed pretty sure that the Ducks were going to reach the final four on the strength of Bol Bol’s skinny legs. Who knows they may still gel as a team, but I certainly hope not. Altman should be coaching at a JC after all the shit he’s pulled and gotten away with.

        • It’s obviously not just you. I’m extending the conversation by just responding.

But I need for anemec to be shown in his true light, not just that of the bloated and biased turd he often is.

That, and I don’t understand why people still follow or read these lazy morons, then get upset when they write lazy, moronic stuff.

          What were you expecting?

    • WT was very testy in a recent presser, I think it was after the St.Louis loss? He almost broke it down by player how inexperienced the team was. I thought it was a very WTF moment and extremely disingenuous . I’m just waiting for the “we lost Drew” card to be played next

Coaches can’t really use inexperience in today’s college game, even if they want to. There are freshmen, even in non-legacy programs who are the best players on their teams. It’s time for WT to get results or get out. The best player he coached so far was a CR recruit.

    • He’s owed 6.3 million for the next 3 seasons after this one. I can’t imagine another school would pay him more than that without a tournament run this year.

    • Graduates?

      Or exhausts eligibility?

I’ll take both, but I’d prefer the former. I like the guy, but he’s doing the same thing CR would still be doing. But I think CR’s one tourney run would have gone to at least a second game.

This offense is ridiculous. Pile no press break (an easy peasy thing to do, PG or no PG) onto that, and we have a mess. We should be undefeated and on cruise control right now, getting garbage time minutes for the youngsters. I’m more than a little angry about this.

Thankfully, Larry Scott coaches at every Pac school. So we might have a shot to pull a Utah. It sucks to have to do that, especially when there’s an actual Utah in the Pac. But it’s possible this year.

      • If a team has three top 100 players in their starting line-up and two have been in the system for three years plus, they should be killing it by now. Something is wrong, head coach has to be accountable.

  17. WHY THE HELL IS EVERYONE BITCHING ABOUT OREGON! I come here to read about Beaver recruiting and all I get is damn Duck bitchin. Can you focus please and discuss our recruiting class.

  18. Apparently, this admin does not accept CRBAs for passport processing. A friend can’t get one for work despite being born to a service member overseas and serving overseas over a 24 year career. He has two old passports a CRBA and a DoD USID, but they won’t issue a passport to him unless he gets certified copies of both his dead parents’ birth certificates.

He even has an EDL from Michigan and travels to Canada and the Caribbean all the time.

But none of this apparently proves anything anymore.

Anyone have any issues like this? Anyone have any idea what can be done? I suggested he lean on his Congressman to make the bureaucracy do the right thing… or just sell off his stuff and get himself deported to Germany when he retires.

    • This is a serious question, not something your cowardly ratings porn is for. I’ve poted this question in several places, including vet forums. Nobody knows what the hell to do. Some dummies think it’s a joke.

      It’s not.

      • It’s certainly not a joke to anyone who has had to deal with a bureaucracy. Your suggestion to involve ones congressman is the best way I know of. Good luck to your friend.

        • Dealing with bureaucracy is easy. Get in line, dot your i’s and cross your t’s.

But this is a hard turn from past policy, essentially making it impossible to even have i’s and t’s. His father was born in Florida in 1925 or so. I have another friend who was born in Japan around the same time. He was going to move to the Florida gulf coast to retire, but he couldn’t get an ID there, because his certified birth certificate is a non-existent hospital in San Francisco. But that’s what the US government issued to his family. What’s he supposed to do?

Friend one has to get a sworn affidavit from both his parents to pry his father’s birth certificate (if it even exists) from the weird state of Florida. Friend two just told the state to go fuck itself. He wasn’t going to pay fines for not getting his DL in a timely manner… when the state refused to issue him a DL.

In short, he sold the property he bought and moved to St Thomas. He now laughs about it, because an un-American bureaucracy kept him from buying a house that was destroyed when Michael rolled through.

And he’s better off than the first friend, who isn’t sure if the one postcard-sized embassy-issued birth certificate issued even made it home. The mid-50s were a time when paperwork wasn’t really considered a hindrance. Other friends tell stories of overseas births less than 10 years later, and how the embassy stressed they not lose this birth certificate, because it’s the only one that exists, and there is no record of it.

So they obviously knew there was an issue with it by the mid-60s.

My friend, btw, had to affirm an oath to the USA when he turned 18 and registered for the draft. Apparently that too is meaningless now.

So much winning… it gets tiresome.

          • To be clear, there have been a lot of restrictions placed on document applications from State over the last 17 years, for obvious reasons. But not accepting CRBAs is out of bounds.

          • Lol i mis-read your post. I thought he was foreign born us citizen being denied entry into the US (dont know where i got that). Has he attempted to move the case to people higher up the chain of responsibility? I find most lower level gov employees to be less then knowledgeable about intricacies of their job. Im wondering if this has to do with that new enhanced ID rollout thats supposed to happen at some point?

  19. Anyone ever see where that USC grad transfer DB ended up? The one that talked shit about the coaches when he announced his transfer? Ykili Ross? I looked around and couldn’t find anything. I wonder if his little outburst got him blackballed?

  20. Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (or happy winter solstice, or whatever you choose to celebrate this time of year) and Happy New Year. Cheers!

  21. Finally a sportswriter comes up with an accurate account of my tenure at OSU. Describes how my vaunted semi-triple option represented OSU’s last best chance (minus the Erickson mini-miracle) to be competitive in the PAC-8, 10 now 12. Ken Goe’s most excellent piece is at OregonLIve today.

I don’t know how to do all those fancy cut and pastes you young fella’s do, go find it yourselves.

OH Yea…. Merry Christmas etc. etc.

    • I’d get verbally abused on here for linking to the O. Here’s the title.

Army proves the wishbone still works, so why don’t more teams use it? Issues & Answers

    • Fool’s Gold, most of the credit for the four win seasons goes to Rocky and his defense. Which unlike your offense was exciting and NOT one dimensional! I guess you get some credit for hiring Rocky.

  22. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, have a wonderful Boxing Day and Zarathosht Diso, happy Kwanzaa and Omisoka, happy new year.

Happy being one day closer to pitchers and catchers reporting.
