Recruiting Weekend

214

NiceBeav compiled a list of recruits visiting this weekend. Pretty big weekend. Go Beavs.

Beavs hosting several football official visitors this weekend. Probably the biggest official visit weekend we’ve had in some time actually.

I had a longer post started but wordpress somehow lost it before i posted so here’s a short version with links to player profiles.

Cooper Darling-OL(OSU commit)
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/cooper-darling-249133

Jake Overman-TE(Beavs are favorite currently)
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/jake-overman-216391#school-interests

Maureese Wren- JC ATH. Visited Bama recently
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2018/maureese-wren-180041#school-interests

Jeremiah Hunter- WR (Cal commit)
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/jeremiah-hunter-223259

Alex Lemon- JC DE
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/alex-lemon-244909

Ender Aguilar- DE
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/ender-aguilar-236147

Latrell BankstonJC DT
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/latrell-bankston-241178

These are all guys with multiple quality P5 offers, so it’s pretty encouraging that we’re getting so many on campus. This list isn’t final either, some guys are still working out visit plan details so I could see this list growing.
Another possible addition could be JC OL Luke Haggard. I’m also waiting to hear on some others. I’ll try to get verification on the full list later this week once we get a little closer to the weekend.

  1. As always, these lists are fluid and can change quite a bit between now and the weekend. But initial signs point to this being one of the biggest recruiting weekends for Oregon State(football) in recent memory.
    #GoBeavs
    #BTD20

  2. The first 3 on this list look like solid recruits. The other 4 I have questions on:

    Jeremiah Hunter- WR (Cal commit)

Will he flip? Why is he looking at other schools if he’s already committed to CAL?

    Alex Lemon- JC DE

Solid offer sheet with Oklahama, LSU and Florida recruiting him as well. If we beat them out, then recruiting will certainly be heading in the right direction as a confirmation.

    Ender Aguilar- DE

No stars, but his film shows raw talent. Is he being recruited as a DL or TE? He’s quick and strong. So I could see him come in on Special Teams and have a few fake FG attempts with him at TE/H-Back.(Reminds me of Joe Halahuni https://www.gazettetimes.com/philomathexpress/local/crime-and-courts/halahuni-transitions-from-college-football-to-law-enforcement/article_fa962192-ed11-5b1b-b00c-8ca281028105.html)

    Latrell BankstonJC DT

Another raw talent guy with quick hands and feet for a big guy. I could see him slimming down a bit and adding muscle at OSU. There is potential and adds depth.

    • Aguilar is rated 3* on 247, fwiw. Has a pretty decent offer sheet too. My guess would be DE for him, only because Overman is a decent bet to be a Beav. Not sure we would take 2 TEs in this class.

Lemon seems like a reach for us, and from what Ive read, he really enjoyed his recent Florida visit. Maybe he thought Oregon State was Oregon when he set up a visit with us?

Giys commit and flip all the time. Only fair he should get tp use all of his free trips if someone is willing to host him.

      • I had read somewhere(at least, I for some reason recall) that Ender is being recruited to be a tackle. He has the height and frame and seems like the ideal spot with his athletic ability. Could be wrong but that was my understanding

  3. Bradley Bickler going to transfer? A guy came into my work today and said there could be a couple players leaving, Bickler is one and the other he couldn’t remember the name. Anyone heard for sure?

    • Is he the one Cory Hall offered and Niner honored? Or was that Dawkins? Either way, maybe it is for the best. Free up another school or for Niner and his staff.

The quality of recruits who are coming to visit is impressive.

    • And just like that, Arkansas is out of the CWS. I really hope Michigan can keep winning and move on to the Championship game! Would make me feel as though Oregon State lost to the best team in our regional.

          • Exactly! We lost to Creighton and Cincy Michigan played both of those teams and they won 2/3 against Creighton. Both Michigan and Creighton beat Cincy. Also, Michigan was in the 16th seeded regional. Quite impressive to be 1 or 2 games away from playing in the National Championship game as a 3 seed in the 16th seed regional.

          • But they didn’t. In fact they lost to both teams that Michigan beat. Using his same circular logic one could argue OSU was the worst team in their own regional.

  4. Michigan’s pitching is way better now than earlier in the season. They were swept by Texas Tech in March and then they beat them in Omaha. Also, Willie Weiss from Westview High school is on their team and has thrown the 6th most innings for them this year.

    • Vanderbilt is the team to beat. I’ll be shocked if they don’t win it all. Stranger things have happened though.

  5. Oregonian has a preview/write up on the cornerback position.
Smith made the following comments. Doesn’t sound very promising.

    OSU coach Jonathan Smith says

“We were pretty cautious, meaning like a couple of those guys could have gone during the spring game. There’s not a guy in the secondary that we don’t anticipate being ready in August. We feel like we have two guys who have played a lot, Kaleb Hayes and Isaiah Dunn, both corners we’re counting on who have improved, especially Kaleb. Dunn is probably more an anchor for us; he’s played a little more. Kaleb played quarterback in high school, never backpedaled before he got here. It was going to take some time. He has a physical skill set. He’s gotten way better from year one to year two, just from a comfort level and the movements it takes. Those two guys we feel solid with.

“We have a couple guys who can play both spots. Shawn Wilson played both corners, and he dabbled at safety. He’s a veteran senior, played a lot. We’ve got some younger corners, Jaden Robinson, redshirted and has a chance to be pretty good. Will it be next year? I don’t know. Kitan Oladapo, this guy played safety all fall. Wanted to get him and see his movements at corner. He’s not bad. He’s going to push for time at corner. Jaydon Grant, he’ll have a full summer to come back. He’ll do some nickel and corner. We’re going to play five more than half the time; everybody does. Jeffrey Manning could play some nickel.

“Secondary (including safeties) you need 10. Are we there yet? No, I but I think we have eight. Which is OK, because sometimes corners don’t come off the field.”

    • Grant impressed his true frosh year (was that last year?) with quite a few INT’s in practice/scrimmages and got some playing time at nickel before he got hurt. IIRC Wilson was decent last year and Hayes was improving before his injury.

Let’s be honest: when you had a historically bad defense like we did last year, it’s going to take some time to get things back to anything even remotely resembling respectable.

      • Players in the Transfer Portal still available to be picked up:

        Quantino Allen: WR

        Christian Wallace: CB
        Deshon Wilson: CB
        Jay Irvine: CB
        Justin Gardner: CB

        Braelen Bettles: S

So 4 CB’s and 1 Safety are trying to transfer out of OSU land somewhere else, but haven’t yet.

        • Their highlights from the 2018 season must not be impressing any other coaches either.

that’s the risk of that transfer portal. guys put there name in the portal, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t return to their current team, but, the current team has the opportunity to re-distribute that scholarship the next term. I’m guessing OSU isn’t going to bring any of these guys back, although it wouldn’t hurt to have a couple extra bodies to throw out there like Irvine or Gardner.

I think Wilson’s ship has sailed because of behavior issues, and I don’t see Smith having Wallace back for a 3rd(4th?) time.

These guys basically bet their guaranteed scholarships that they could get another opportunity elsewhere, but so far that bed doesn’t appear to be paying off.

    • There’s a lot of youth at DB and 5 guys means 3 CB’s and two Safeties unless we play against WSU we need 10 CB’s to play against the Pass Spread attack they play. We do not have the depth/speed/nor experience to play with the top half of the Pac-12 in regards to defense. It’s headed in the right direction recruiting wise. Start with defense after getting play makers on Offense the previous season. Our offense needs to be able to move the ball methodically and keep our young defense rested. We don’t have the depth nor talent to have multiple explosive plays then settle for missed field goals 50% of the time we attempt one.

The better the defense depth gets, the better our offense will get due to going up against the 2-3 deep guys that are competing for the 1st string depth.

      • If the defensive line stops getting blown 5 yards off the ball on every snap suddenly the secondary will look better. Much less if they actually manage a pass rush of some kind.

  6. Angie Machado stole information right from AngryBeavs.com which I had posted about yesterday. She’s got a dying website and steals so much content. Ridiculous.

    • Like what?
If anything, it’s not Angie, it’s her employees. They do it to me all the time.

Speaking of, I see they list Newell as a visitor for June 28th weekend, but I double checked and he comes this weekend

  7. I shared some information on here from a guy who came into my work yesterday morning about Bradley Bickler leaving or being kicked off the team. He said one other guy is leaving too but couldn’t remember the name. I found out that Bickler hasn’t been with the team since mid-May. Angie Machado posts today like she’s breaking the news and parrots what I said. If she was that in tune, she would have known weeks ago. I’ve seen this happen multiple times with her using content from
this site. It’s straight up stealing and laziness on her part.

  8. Confirmed with a source that Ender Aguilar has committed to another school and will no longer be visiting OSU.
Not sure if it’s been announced so I wont mention which school.

  9. A couple tidbits from Eggers:
–Don’t think we’ve seen the last of Mike Riley as a “consultant” to Smith, even with Riley’s new gig in the XFL. Eggers says,
“Riley is not sure if he’ll be back as a consultant with OSU next season.
“Jonathan and I talked about a month ago, but now this has come up, so we haven’t finalized anything,” Riley says. “I really enjoyed the staff and my time working with them last year. But if I come back, I have to be fair to Oregon State and find out what the parameters of (the XFL gig) will be.”

Great to note that Riley wants to be “fair” to OSU!!!

–And, regarding Mike Parker, Eggers reports, ” Oregon State is completing arrangements to make radio play-by-play man Mike Parker an employee of the university, with a raise in salary along with health insurance and retirement benefits.

    https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/431299-339538-after-surgery-will-durant-stay-and-play-with-warriors

  10. Maybe it’s something or maybe it’s nothing, but just suddenly today a bunch of OSU coaches started following former USC transfer safety Bubba Bolden. He used to play with Tyjon Lindsey with Tate Martell, but had announced a few months back he was transferring to Miami. Wonder if something is up??? It’s pretty unusual to have so many coaches go after 1 guy at the same time

    • If they somehow land Bolden and he can play DB for us next year, I’m suddenly feeling pretty bullish on this upcoming season. He would be a game change on defense at our weakest position.

Wishful thinking I suppose, but I like that they are swinging for the fences

    • Not sure how accurate the crystal ball is, but I have compiled a list of the following from it and utilized the 247 sports crystal ball calculator. 12 commits = 138.60 pts = ranked 35 nationally based on current standings.

      All 3* per 247:

      Zeriah Beason WR 6-0 195
      Junior Walling ILB 6-1 231
      John Miller ILB 6-1 215
      Ben Gulbranson QB 6-3 210
      Jalen John RB 5-11 180 4*
      Travis Shippen SDE 6-5 275
      Aidan Finney OT 6-7 265
      Jake Overman TE 6-3 231
      Cooper Darling OG 6-4 290
      Shane Kady WDE 6-3 210
      Jamir Shepard WR 6-2 190
      Silas Bolden ATH 5-10 175

      • There’s a “latest crystal balls” which shows players with OSU offers who have recently had somebody submit a prediction.
When you see 4 predictions all clustered together within an hour or so of each other, it means all of the “analysts” are padding there stats because one of them found out where the player is committing and they want to share with each other before the announcement is made and make themselves look like gurus. But what it really tells you is they asked a kid where he’s committing, then posted it before the kid gets a chance to announce it himself. First!!

        https://247sports.com/college/oregon-state/Season/2020-Football/TargetPredictions/

        • Right, that’s why I said, not sure how “accurate” these are, but the way I look at the crystal ball is that the recruit has that team high on their list. It’s not really official until the player comes out and states whether they’re committed to that team or not. My point of posting these players was not to say they’re committed, but most are committed officially, but it’s to say that our class is looking to be shaping up to be a pretty strong class. I’m liking the way the coaches are recruiting in that they are getting needed position players, i.e. RB, WR, TE, QB, DL/DE, OL, LB, DB. These are all needs on the OSU roster, but they aren’t going after just OL and DL/DE nor just WR and DB, etc. They are looking to fill depth by a player or two knowing they’ll have 3-5 years to develop them into Pac-12 caliber players by their JR/SR year.

Using the current roster as a starting point, narrowing down how many players they need at each position for the next season to fulfill the needed depth will allow this classes experience to overlap the raw talent of future classes. Building success now means laying a foundation that hasn’t really been seen at Oregon State since MR’s first stint and DE’s 2-3 years at OSU. I am excited about 2-3 years from now what this staff and team will look like in regards to talent, recruiting class, and seeing Reser sold out again(been a really really long time since the stadium sold out officially).

      • 247 had two local kids 100 percent committing to the Beavs but they verbally committed to Cal, Alfieri and someone else. Don’t count those until you hear it from the kids themselves and they sign their LOI.

  11. I don’t follow recruiting very closely as I get most if not all of my info from this site. It seems just a couple of months ago most were very down on this staffs recruiting ability but in the last 30-60 days things have picked up considerably. I know that Nemec has been VERY down on this staff and their ability to recruit but NiceBeaver seems to be quite optimistic.

I guess my question is what should our takeaway be regarding recruiting and is there finally a light at the end of the tunnel to get this program turned around?

  12. This seems to be the same pattern we saw under GA. A new coaching staff does better in their second recruiting year because it’s their first where they’ve had a full year to build relationships (remember, these guys would have been highly touted juniors last year).

Team JS has the ability to talk about a new attitude, new approach, etc. because they’re still new. Come Years 3 and 4, I assume that will change. What did GA Year 3 have to sell?

  13. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t understand what the Padres see in Malone. Good for him getting drafted. Hopefully he can be more consistent and versatile with his hitting.

    • I was sitting next to a scout from the Royals organization at the regionals who was well travelled (he was at the SEC tournament the week before) and I was complaining about Malone’s drop-off and he just shook his head and said, “he’ll be drafted”.

      • This reminds me of when my HS coach implemented a summer workout bonding thing where we had to run like 3 miles as a team and in between we stopped had to do 50 sit ups and 50 push ups, 1 of our team mates had to alternate carrying up your other teammate. Needless to say, it didn’t work and it turned into a hazing teasing event instead.

My take, this was a waste of time and resources.

    • Let’s worry less about what other teams that aren’t in our league are doing, and more on what our team and league aren’t doing. Our team isn’t going out on the willamette in a life raft and getting a taste of Navy Seal training. Everyone is different.

      • Worried? Who? What?

Not sure if you noticed, there’s not much going on right now. But feel free to carry on with the faux outrage.

        • If you had read my comment more closely, it basically sarcastically states that we have nothing better to talk about than what other people are doing because we don’t have anything to report in regards to OSU sports or Pac-12 related news. Current events is all we have to keep us entertained at the moment. So be it.

          • It’s fun to bash Nebraska football mostly because their fans are entitled douches. We tried to explain Mike Riley to them and they were condescending and arrogant. We knew best and it was proven to be true.

    • I love the fact that there were 10 SEC teams that made the tournament, now there’s only 1 left standing, Vandy. It’s raining hard this morning here in Omaha, NE. So not sure how the ball field will look this afternoon. my guess is they get 1 game in today, not both.

Big 10 vs Big 12 and SEC vs ACC

GO BLUE! I have Vanderbilt winning the whole thing, but would love to see Michigan play in the championship.

  14. Twitter feed will probably be pretty quiet this weekend while I’m out camping. Doubt I’ll have much service. Hopefully the commits hold off till Sunday evening…but I doubt it

      • Just a group camping trip locally, just a little east of Portland.
Last year I didn’t get much reception and missed some Beaver post season games so am assuming the same will happen. I’ll send you the cirrent password in case you dont have it

    • Can you imagine if there was a Mike Riley Jr.? Jiminy Christmas, OSU would be caught up in gum chewers for another 50 years!

    • Speaking of Mike Martin, our guy Sidd weighs in:
“Mike Martin took FSU to Omaha 17 times and zero titles. Casey took us 6 times and won 3 titles. Unreal. Looking forward to Canham’s success!”

  15. Michigan is playing great ball and they’re fun to watch. I’ll be on their bandwagon until mid-September when I’m reminded what a whiny tool they have in football coach Jim Harbaugh.

  16. Damn, almost guaranteed to have the lowest ranked class again, not just p12 but all power 5 teams. Gonna be a rough next few years on the field at this pace…

      • We all know that recruiting services’ rankings are based on total # of commits. Right now, OSU is showing 8 commits on Scout for a ranking of 58, 10 commits on Rivals for a ranking of 57 and 8 commits on 247 for a ranking of 61st. So, as the # of OSU commits increases the national rankings will change either up or down. For only Smith’s second full recruiting cycle, that’s where I’d expect it to be coming off of a 2-10 season with not much left from the Andersen debacle. I don’t think Smith or his staff expected this would be easy in the first 2-3 years, but I fully expect years 3 and 4 will shown tremendous growth in not only recruiting but competitiveness on the field. So duck fans, you better get your licks in while you can because before too long, Smith will have the Beavers back on track while Mario C. will under perform with all of that so-called top recruiting talent. 9-4 last season for MC in the weakest conference and with the weakest non-conference schedule with a supposed Heisman candidate QB. Auburn is licking their chops right now for the 1st game of the 2019 season and I don’t think it’s going to be pretty for the Duckies although those uniforms I’m sure will look very pretty. Bite me duck fan!

  17. Looking through current commits nearly all have another PAC-12 offer. Over the past 3-4 years that has not been the case. If we are winning recruiting battles against other PAC-12 teams that has me optimistic that this staff will be able to recruit. And they have shown an ability to pick up transfers that can fit immediate needs. This should begin to pay off in the 2020-21 season. Was not a big fan of the Smith hire but he does appear have a plan for improving talent on the roster and is starting to execute it. Fingers crossed.

    • Further down in the thread:
“Wise men speak because they have something to say. Fools speak because they have to say something.”

AK, you had something to say! Spot on!
If Smith doesn’t find someone new to kick he’ll leave a couple W’s on the table.

  18. D1 dropped their paywall for a few pieces on the CWS, worth your time is this one on Michigan’s HC and, among other things, the growth of youth baseball in Big Ten country. Good quotes from Michigan’s HC and a tip of the cap to the Gophers as well.

I thought this comment on the story was relevant to the coaches we have at OSU (I know, everyone says this about their guys/gals):
“There’s a reason that the head man at the College level is called Coach and the MLB head man is called a manager. It’s always wonderful to see a Coach have affects on the young men he teaches… “

    https://d1baseball.com/college-world-series/bakichs-patient-plan-pays-off-with-cws-finals-trip/

  19. Wouldn’t be too surprising if we landed Newell and Bankston after this weekend too. I’m not counting Overman out either, even though we picked up Spencer unexpectedly this weekend.
Pretty productive month so far for Smith and Co.

    • And getting guys that have other power 5 offers. Is this Newell’s first OV? I only saw osu on 247 for visits. Wonder if he takes anymore and if he is swaged if he does visit somewhere else. He has been all over twitter with Osu related material.

      • My impression is Newell has been very focused on OSU since even before his visit. He seems to have a great relationship with out staff already.

It’s almost like our staff knew 2019 wouldn’t be a very strong class since they came in late, so they focused alot of early effort towards building strong relationships with 2020 guys.

  20. I question even offering spencer, don’t see more than maybe a special teams player from the film I saw, offer list backs that up as well.

      • Roseville HS where Spencer is from, the colors are orange and black. It’s a natural fit. 6’5” 235 with some added college weight maybe they see him moving to a different position.

With that being said, these are the type of offer sheets common for beav commits in recent years. Seems like now they are anomalies so I’m hoping smith can see something others don’t and that’s why they offered him.

  21. Hey Nicebeaver, do you know anything about Justin Livingston from Paramount HS? Saw something tonight that made me think he was going to commit to us. I don’t see an offer but he did come visit I think.

  22. AB friends, highly recommend putting spare cash that you won’t need for years into gold.
Friendly opinion I’m giving to all people I care about.

      • I’m not sure there’s a “best”. Apmex, Gainesville Coins, JM Bullion are all really solid.
Have to watch premiums (i.e. difference between spot gold and the gold you’re buying)…bars have lower premium than coins. You want bullion with either. Low premium coins are things like the Mexican Centenario or Roosters. I wouldn’t pay a premium over 10-15%. If you can’t find that wait for a pullback in price (though the chart shows gold going much higher here with very little resistance between 1400 and 1900, so that’s a risk). With gold up $110 in the past month premiums might be high. People are concerned about the dollar and for good reason….I bought mining stock call options about 3 months ago because I saw this coming, and they are going nuts to the upside. Our government is officially monetizing debt, so we and the dollar are both screwed.

          • Still plenty of time. Gold’s new base (i.e. major resistance it had to break) was $1350, so that’s where the breakout began. We’re only $70 above that. To see how fast and high things move when a currency goes South just look at this graph: https://www.bullion-rates.com/gold/VES/Year-2-chart.htm
I’m sure people at 73k in late ’18 thought it was too expensive, and now it’s 9million per oz.

If you’re concerned that much about price wait for a pull back near $1350ish. I’d be more concerned with holding dollars, personally, than saving a few $ per oz. Or look into silver, which is insanely cheap still.

      • Better than dollars, worse than gold.

People call crypto “the people’s money” and gold “God’s money”. If gold is too expensive people should just get some silver. It usually outperforms gold anyway during bull markets and it’s obviously more time tested than crypto.

Food might be the best dollar hedge. If you have a home with a lot of space storing food might be the best move.

  23. Also, gold isn’t a “get rich” type thing nor is it really an “investment”. Think of it more like insurance. It’s just to protect/hedge vs a falling dollar. Retain purchasing power. Not to get rich. The dollar is about to get really ugly in terms of lost purchasing power, so it’s a hedge against that. You’ll never get rich buying gold. You’ll only protect any wealth you have. Just so people understand what it’s purpose is…

I remember reading a story about this couple in Poland during WW2 who put all their paper dollars into a hole in their wall thinking that would protect them against the government. The paper obviously went to $0. If they had converted that to gold and stuffed it in their wall, they would have come out with generally speaking the same purchasing power. That sums up the point of the precious metals.

    • What do they value most in Russia and China? I feel like learning those foreign languages might be good insurance for our well being as well.

      • Russia and China value *all* natural resources. But in terms of financial ones, gold. And yeah, definitely learning Chinese could help. I highly recommend the book “The 100 Year Marathon” if you want to learn about the end game. China has played us brilliantly.

  24. If you decide to buy silver, please just take your money down to the local coin shop (like Eugene Coin and Jewelry) and ask them to buy junk silver. They’ll have buckets full of domestic silver coins that have been circulated that they will sell you for spot value.

Long story short my dad got taken buying silver from one of those online/radio/TV places. They sold him “collectable” silver medallions in pretty little boxes that “will be worth blah blah blah” instead of actual weight of silver that he paid for. I doubt they’ll ever be worth more than spot value.

    • Yes, as mentioned above buy “bullion” only. Bullion and junk fall into the same category.
Numismatic (collectable) coins are great for diversity once you have bullion, but it’s more advanced and you have to know what you’re doing.

There are plenty of great articles on Google with regard to buying your first metal. I’d recommend reading those too to understand premiums and the concept of bullion before doing anything.

  25. OT- Angry, do you still follow the Mets? I’m thinking Callaway doesn’t last the season. Another year pissed away. It’s always something with the team and when was the last time they signed a free agent who actually performed? Cano is the latest in a long line, starting with George Foster many moons ago. They have a penchant for signing big names past their prime.

    • Yeah they sign guys who have name appeal yet who are old. They do it to get people excited and put butts in the seat. I can rattle off a ton. Willie Mays, Mo Vaughn, Cespedas Carlos Baerga, Rickey Henderson, et al.

I saw Callaway make some highly criticized moves. That rarely ends well in New York. My guess is he doesn’t make it through the season. The players don’t seem to like him. Thor disrespected him when being pulled from a game, too. My guess is he’s only around because they’re cheap and want to save a few bucks to have him finish the year.

The Mets also have terrible luck with pitching injuries. Remember the trio of Izzy, Pulsifer, Wilson? Now Thor, Degrom, and Matz are always hurt.

      • Yup, I remember that pitching trio and Matt Harvey was supposed to be the second coming of Tom Seaver. Sounds like Callaway went after a reporter the other day and that’s not usually a good sign either. I like Alonso, he seems tough-minded, but I’m sure they will figure out a way to screw that up over time.

        • Alonso has looked good, but I see a lot of flaws in his swing. Just so many Ks…
He won’t be great unless he figures out the strike zone. He’ll be one of the many high K, low average, high HR guys out there. A dime a dozen these days.

    • No news to add except as of today we are in the recruiting dead period, so i wouldn’t expect much activity through the end of July. No visits will happen in that period as far as i know

  26. Sounds like the NCAA and California are in a face-off regarding the recent California state legislation, which would allow college students to profit off their own likeness, passes in their state. Bill was approved by the legislature recently.
So now the NCAA is telling CA lawmakers that CA based college teams won’t be allowed to participate in collegiate championships if the law is approved by the senate. Who will win?
    (Probably not the students)

  27. Damm etTu NiceBeav!!?? Oh ye of little faith lol

“Lemon seems like a reach for us, and from what Ive read, he really enjoyed his recent Florida visit. Maybe he thought Oregon State was Oregon when he set up a visit with us?”

    • Happy to be wrong, but doesn’t it surprise you at least a little that we are landing the top ranked player at any position? Especially with that list of offers?
If he ends up getting re-ranked to a 4* guy, you better believe teams will work even harder to poach him, and signing day is a long ways off. We better hope he likes our scheme when he watches us play this season.

      • Pros: Visited with parents, not his first OV, been through the process before as a HS student, lots of time to solidify the relationship, and always easier to protect :-)

Cons: before visiting, stated wanted to decide in Nov and take all his OV.

Will be interesting to see if he really does take his other OV. Do we really know if Smith has a no OV if committed policy?

      • No… Jack disparaged any use of the ratings button. It was way below his vastly superior intellect. I miss… the dude, though. if he’s truly gone, can only hope it was peaceful and painless.

          • Actually, it’s more fitting to build a permanent outfield bleacher area with a Party Deck type feel to it, similar to the one in Reser? Perhaps a name like, Rutschman’s Home Run Deck?

          • it would be unreasonable to expect Adley to support any improvements until his second, and prospectively much bigger contract; or the third. Ellsbury’s money didn’t come in, really, until his MLB career was effectively over.

I agree, though, we nearby comments that the baseball program should not lose momentum and develop a plan for the next major enhancement Goss stadium. The most obvious need is permanent seating in the outfield. Those bleachers are aging, and a permanent structure could actually squeeze in more people. For now I think we have all the party decking we need. The goal now should enclosing the outfield look.

          • I’d rather any donated money go into facilities and/or services to help the players. Some type of training area. I don’t all of Goss and the facilities available them. Something that sets the program apart for reasons that will continue their dominance. Adley would know what they need and how it could help them develop while at OSU.

The feel of Goss with it being small but loud is awesome. I’d worry adding seats would lose that feel.

        • If the monetary system ever does truly collapse, of what value will gold be? The new reserve will be violence. Violence is the only thing that everybody understands. To survive, you’ll need to go on the road. No static position is defensible indefinitely. Instead of hoarding a useless metal, you need to be caching weapons and ammunition and balls. The only means of survival will be taking what you need from the weak. One the sheeple are gone, it’s on…survival of the fittest.

          • Well I have a car, guns, ammo, etc. But I don’t believe that will happen.
It isn’t a useless metal now (sounds like Warren Buffet got in your ear. Look up the uses), and it especially won’t be useless once there’s a stable currency and you can trade it in/retain purchasing power or use it as collateral. A better question is: what good is useless paper?

          • Trust me fellow citizen.. I invested all my money into federal reserve dollars; and you should too! The only currency backed by the good faith of the American people™.

          • Better include some water, food, shelter etc. You can have guns and ammo but if you can’t stay alive to use it, what good is it.

          • Guns=food. Either killing it or the person who has it. You dont need water, you need something to filter it. Water is everywhere.
Shelter is easy as long as you have a tarp, vehicle, ect. Basically anything getting you out of the elements.
If shtf ever happened 30-40% of the US population would be dead within 6 weeks barring some outside humanitarian help.

    • I think it’s highly likely that Jack has decided to cut ties with the interwebs and do something productive. Maybe he’s building a cabin in the woods where he will devise a plot to take out ol’ shit- for-brains.

    • It’s probably time I just send him an email…
Meant to do that two weeks ago.

Okay, just sent him this email:

      Hey Jack,
People on AB are concerned you passed away.
If you are still alive, maybe pop in? If you’re not alive, rest peacefully, buddy.
      Thanks,
      AB

We shall see if Jack appears. If not I think he’s gone.

    • The world is a better place without bitter, angry hypocrites. Probably in the minority but I don’t miss his posts one bit.

          • I can’t be sure. I believe it’s his real name in the email. Seems like a real name at least. I see no obituary under that name, though. At least it’s not online.
I don’t want to share his name in case he’s alive and doesn’t want that…

          • I’m not sure if I miss him, but some of his posts were entertaining. My bone to pick with him was that for some reason he called me a racist in here and when I asked him to show me the post, he obviously couldn’t, but he never quite apologized.

On his Orange Express blog he once predicted a Craig Robinson team was going to win 20 games and they ended up losing 20, so despite his own belief he was not always right. I suppose we’re all a little delusional in our own way.

          • John Birch Society? I’ve heard the name, but no idea what they stand for. In my case, I think he ended up saying he confused me with someone else. If I remember correctly, he was on a rant that some in here were racist towards Craig Robinson.

          • Jack was the master of stating his opinion as fact.

As strange as it may sound to some, I remember the tipping point for me. For whatever reason the topic was work clothing. The assumption was “man” (construction, fabrication, etc) clothing and he made some ridiculous claim to the effect of Carhartt being some kind of poser thing and that Dickies were the real deal. Anyone who works in a trade knows how utterly ridiculous that claim is, and I couldn’t let it slide. All I got was a “heh heh” type response, that clued me in to the bullshit undercurrent that was the Jack post.

          • Carhartt is better but their quality has gone down a lot. Dickies is mostly garbage. The last time they were even decent was probably the early 90s.

          • As long as I’ve been in a trade where I had to buy my own work clothing Dickies has been a cheap Fred Meyer wanna be greaser shit line. If you bought that crap and wore it in an actual fabrication shop it would literally last maybe a week. I’ve had double front Carhartts last over a year. There is literally no comparison. It’s like comparing Walmart boots to American made Danners. Implying that they’re even similar proves that you don’t actually know shit.

        • Was just saying I don’t miss his posts. Don’t wish for his death.

Hell, I’m sure plenty of folks around here would be happy if I died or quit posting.

  28. Has anyone seen film on Rejzohn Wright, I’m assuming Nahshon Wright’s twin brother? He plays with an attitude unlike Nahshon, but he’s a ball hawk too. I’m surprised the recruiting sites don’t have Rajzohn interested in Oregon State and Oregon State interested in Rajzohn.

    • If I recall correctly Nice spoke about him back before Nahshon committed. Said we’d be going after both but Rejzohn is behind as far as school is concerned.

      • That’s correct, and we offered him shortly after his brother committed. I would consider OSU the favorite to land him in the 2020 class, but there’s no rush there. His brother graduated from JC this spring, so Nahshon was a late class of 2019 addition. Rezjohn graduates winter term next year.

        • 8 minutes for a knowledgeable response! You’ll never get that from “Mama” or any other pay site.

Nice is The Man!! And deserves every donated cent that gets passed on to him!

        • Thanks Nicebeaver for the information. The one thing about them is they are fast, tall, and have an eye for where the ball is going to be thrown or ran. Being able to recruit speed and height, means they know you can’t coach speed, but you can coach ability. Find tall lanky guys like the Wright brothers, and we’ll be making headway into the kind of team JS wants to have on his roster.

  29. It is interesting what the current roster shows in regards to height. Currently 17 players on the roster are under 6 ft tall.

    Here’s the breakdown:

    6 RB’s
    6 WR’s
    4 DB’s
    1 Punter

    3 Seniors
    0 Juniors
    6 Soph
    8 Freshman

    Champ Flemmings 5-5 WR R-Soph
Calvin Tyler, JR 5-8 RB R-Soph
    Shawn Wilson 5-9 DB R-Sr.
    Tyjon Lindsey 5-9 DB R-Soph
Wynston Russell 5-9 DB True Freshman
    Kanoa Shannon 5-9 RB R-Freshman
    Connor Morton 5-9 RB R-Freshman
    I’Shawn Stewart 5-10 WR R-Freshman
Anthony Gould 5-10 WR True Freshman
Jermar Jefferson 5-10 RB True Soph.
    Daniel Rodriguez 5-10 P R-Sr.
    Kolby Taylor 5-11 WR R-Soph
    Jesiah, Irish 5-11 WR R-Freshman
    BJ Baylor 5-11 RB R-Soph
Artavis Pierce 5-11 RB True Senior
    Myles Green-Richards DB 5-11 R-Freshman
    Job Dockery 5-11 WR R-Freshman

  30. WBB: Eggers has a piece up on Scott Rueck. Included is a podcast link, probably worth listening to if you’ve got a commute today.
    The written story concludes:

There’s only one thing Rueck hasn’t accomplished at Oregon State — a national championship. Can that happen?
“Why not?” Rueck asks. “I’m a why-not guy — a little guy in a big game. A lot of those little details don’t matter — where you’re from, what your background is. It’s just, ‘Are you going to get the job done? Will you do it right? Are you going to expect massive success?’ I’ve learned that’s the only way to live.”

    https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/431925-339904-rueck-and-the-osu-turnaround

    • Thanks for the link – I knew some of his brother’s story, but not as much as I should have. I always think about young men/women being recruited for college sports and hope their parents think “do I want my son/daughter being coached by this person?” Did OSU pick the right man for job in Mitch? Oh hell yes….

    • I’m not sure what the staff is selling but it’s working. Granted he just received the Auburn offer but he had slew of offers before committing. Also seeing a lot of interaction between the commits already. Something tells me we’ll be making lemonade in the fall :-)

  31. While I know the Oregonian isn’t popular here, I’ve been pretty impressed with the positional preview articles that Nick Daschel has done recently. They really nicely capture all the transfers and offseason movement (which I’d mostly lost track of), and there’s some very blunt and (seemingly) honest quotes from Jonathan Smith on many individual players.

It’s like an Eggers article but more detailed (over all the segments).

  32. Anybody else see that Jay Irvine landed at Idaho State?
Seems like a strange move for a guy who likely would have started last year until his shoulder injury. Wouldn’t he be considered a likely starter here again next year, given our lack of depth at CB?
I’m guessing he went to a lower division to avoid having to sit out 1 year, but still….
Maybe he just didn’t like being here and needed a change of scenery in going from Corvallis to……. Pocatello?

      • Crawford followed Coach Hall. Ironically, Central Michigan had one of their worst seasons in recent memory at 1-11 last year. Luck O’ the Beavs?

    • Yes, I ran across that also. Because on the surface it doesn’t seem to make much sense, my pure speculation is that there was something culturally going on with Irvine. The second worst defense in the nation needs all the experienced bodies it can get!
