Angrybeavs Shutting Down?

154

For anyone struggling setting up recurring donations. It is very simple.

Just click this link: http://angrybeavs.com/contact

Then click “Donate”. Then there will be an area to enter the amount. Right under that it says “make this a monthly donation”. Under that, you can decide how to fund the donation (credit, debit, etc). Any questions just ask.

Hey all,

It’s disappointing, but I lost my two largest donors in the past few weeks. Probably due to political talk. But the short of it is I have too much going on; I can’t work for free in any capacity. I simply don’t have the time. I wrote about this a year ago, and at the time got a dozen or more monthly donors. Things have only gotten more busy for me since then, so even less so can this fly now.

Now we have people complaining about the function of the site on top of this. It takes a lot of time to run the site in terms of creating content, backing up the site, updates, managing users, managing plugins, commenting, etc. People want me to spend more time developing a “block user” function and micromanaging a troll? I can’t.

So, I will be shutting down the site April 1st unless something changes. What I need is (a) the people who are donors to remain and (b) if you can donate monthly, please do. Need monthly donations, not one-time donations. This option is on the donation page. Under the amount it gives the option to make the payment recurring. We have hundreds of readers. If everyone donated a buck we’d be set forever (or at least until the hyperinflation).

So if you guys are willing to do that, I’m willing to keep the site open.

If not, it’s been a great run.

Angry email me… I have experience with Word Press and currently manage two diff word press sites for work… I’d be willing to manage this one… I think there are themes that could take a lot of the work away for you that we could leverage… anyway let me know if your interested

TW, I hope angry gets in touch with you.
Meantime, is this possible, too simple?:
Shut off any and all new commenters after banning the jerk(s)
A stopgap fix that might encourage many here.

As far as I recall, you’ve never asked for help with content. We have some pretty good discussions from time to time that probably could take the form of an individual post, but they end up getting buried. Other blogs I follow will do weekly/monthly features where they elevate these conversations that happen in comments/forums to post status to ensure they get more visibility.

You yourself used to write way more on here than you do now. I’m sure some of that is opportunity cost and feeling like you don’t get any value out of posting.

How has traffic trended over the years as your mode of operating the site has changed?

    • 1
      8

Yes, I’d spend time crafting a post, and people would comment about everything but what I wrote, so it became pointless to keep doing that. Also, after GA, there’s been less to talk about. Smith is treading water and has a long leash, so what can you really say…other than he’s blown about SIX WINS for us. ;) And he shouldn’t have gone for it on 4th vs WSU.

Traffic is normal. About 2,000 views per day, which is on par with most years except ’14 (Riley leaving) where we had 6k per day.

Maybe if you guys see a comment worthy of a topic email me or somehow point it out.

I’d miss this site if things don’t work out.
There may be less to talk about but that doesn’t mean there is nothing worthy of discussion here.

-We’ve got a new baseball coach whose warts need to be identified,
-a search for a new PAC commissioner,
-the whole image/likeness issue to be resolved,
-F.King has yet to make a high profile move, maybe he’ll be picking a new AD in the near future,
-How about WBB? They’ve got a gal who graduated high school early and with less than two weeks on the squad has performed exceptionally well in two games already.
-Football? What’s the implication of coaching changes around the league? Will Merton Hanks be able to fix the problem with zebras? QB battle this Fall? And, how ’bout that 285lb wrestling DT Beav in OH mentiond below.

Of course some of us are just anxious to learn if your success with old tomato seeds will be repeated. :)

Seems fair. I dont post much but enjoy the site as I’ve described before, sort of a virtual bar where beav fans can hang out and shoot the ahit…beav game commentary, recruiting tips, Jack youtubes, political back and forth, numerous side bars, but these two fucking guys and their lovers spat has no value and has introduced an irritating element and people I’d tell in person to fuck off or step outside.

If that happened at my favorite bar I’d stop going and wouldn’t pay to go there so can’t pay anymore here, either.

Wish you the best whatever you decide.

Thanks for the memories Angry…. always appreciated a place to vent about obvious OSU shortcomings and give my extremely optimistic preseason predictions. I won’t be contributing, enjoy your newfound free time, Colorado winters, your soaps and your guitar. I enjoyed getting to know so many of the fellow Beaver travelers, but between covid, politics and Trump there has been an aggressive and dismissive vibe on the site and a lot of the best commenters have ceased to jump into the comments. Too bad.

    Site’s best accomplishments:
    Riley departure
    Baseball National. championship comments
    GA left
    Defense of Heimlich
Observations of basic failures for all things strategy and execution for Banker defenses
The Cheers of Pac12 sports blogs

So long to the fellows of angrybeavs….April 1st? April Fools???

Hoping AB can live on past April 1st but if not thank you sincerely to Angry and everyone who contributed to this site over the years. I was a regular commenter in the 2011-12 years, and have remained a regular visitor until now. I will always appreciate keepin up on the Beavs with so many kindred spirits. That said, if you’re looking for some beaver men’s basketball content, check out the latest episode of The Payton Years, the only podcast in existence dedicated solely to Oregon State men’s basketball. This week we discuss the W over the ducks and chat with former Gonzaga All American and Portland Trail Blazer Dan Dickau. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-payton-years/id1536831436?i=1000506573262

Well let’s not go there yet. Let’s see where we’re at April 1, as mentioned in the post.

So far two donors have stepped up, which is nice. They’re funding all of you deadbeats, though, which isn’t nice. Someone has also offered help finding/developing a “block user” function. We’ll see what happens with that.

The best model for the site is a lot of people donating a small amount, monthly. Fair for everyone.

  7. 11
    3

No, you cant do it Angry. Been a crappy year with the ‘Rona, politics, and then the Beavers disappointing us yet again. I see glimmers of hope, we beat the ducks in the civil war, and again in basketball. Beavs with beavers have some great incoming talent, and baseball will get us through the spring.
You’ve been my distraction from a shitty divorce, 2 deaths in the family, and more. Happily remarried with a couple wonderful kids now. Gotta keep on keeping on! Lifes a garden, dig it!!!

  8. My favorite part of this site in the beginning was my ability to be anonymous and to create different names.
I don’t have time to read or comment anymore.
And I don’t have much faith in the leadership of the Pac12 or OSU athletics or the NCAA anymore.
Its sad to see good institutions go by the wayside,
But hey, crack and meth are legal now and I get to see shopping carts and mass litter along the interstate on a regular basis now… so at least there’s that.

Angry, you take care of you and yours the very best that you can, and nary an apology ever for that please. The site and interaction was fun while it lasted. But time takes its toll on all things, and change is the only thing that doesn’t.

I spend about 12hrs per month working on the site. It comes to $2/hr. This is why *monthly recurring* donations are best. Need that figure higher to justify the time spent. Or I need to reduce time, but I’m down to 3hrs per week – hard to get lower.

Our hosting is actually good til 2023. I don’t need any donations for that. Just small monthly ones so I’m not working for $2. At least get me to minimum wage! Livable wage livable wage (Bernie voice)

  10. Stock market seems to be broken this morning. Brokerages are down, major indices sinking, crazy random movement in individual stocks…

      • Just waiting on price targets for resource stocks on my watchlist (like TMQ and ARGTF). My broker has been down all morning, so I couldn’t buy anything if I wanted to.

I am long LUMN, which I expected to be a boring, consistent dividend pick. It’s up 40% in two days with no news, and no catalysts.

Seriously considering jumping on GME; partially because the math on the short position makes for crazy potential (still), partially because the people vs. hedge fund narrative is fun.

        • The speculative narrative this morning is the brokerage outage is coordinated to save all the funds short GME, et. al.

Wouldn’t surprise me, as brokerages make a good chunk of money loaning out shares. Gotta protect their best clients.

          • The short squeeze thesis has been there forever. It just needed a catalyst. The way I see it, that catalyst is in motion now. Based on the short position, the potential upside is still higher than potential downside.

The risk-reward spread is very wide, but I’m allocating a very small amount to it, so I’m not worried.

          • What’s funny is CNBC put out a fake report that Melvin/Citron closed their GME position. Everyone has called BS on it as the numbers aren’t there for that to be true. Does CNBC fact check, or just take Melvin/Citron’s word?

          • I mean the banks and hedge funds will just pour in massive capital to cover their short positions right? Then people will sell and they still kill the short?

I just don’t see a crowdsourced squeeze being able to outthink the forces that have manipulated the market for 100+ years.

          • Nuc, to cover a short you have to buy back the shares (at increasingly higher prices). GME has zero profit and is a horrible company. So to have to pay $350 (and rising) for each share…yikes.

Barton made a great tweet about it, how the best way to stop it is to stop creating out of the money options.

          • So besides laws…what would stop one fund from calling up another to make a huge volume trade and then sell to create a selling panic? Then the short works out.

Getting rid of OTM would basically mean a price limit on a stock? Like it can only trade at 110% the underlying value of the company?

          • The question is who would they sell to and at what price?

Getting rid of all OTM options wouldn’t be a price limit, it would just restrict liquidity and, in theory, price discovery. Options are like insurance, essentially. If I hold stock X at a value of $12 and I want to make sure I don’t lose more than $2, then I buy an option to sell at $10. The other guy if selling an option which states he HAS to take that stock at $10 or lower if the other party wants to sell.

Price discovery is totally out of the window at this point because there’s such a disconnect between valuations and prices.

I think a sensible rule would be that a stock can’t have more than 100% of its float short (or some other %). But there are so many parties that make money on short-selling it will take legislators and public opinion to push for that to become an actual regulation.

  13. Lots of excitement over those new custom Jordan 1’s with OSU flair on them.
Can somebody tell me, why does Nike get to basketball sneakers from circa 1985 to football teams?
I totally get football cleats for football teams, but these custom basketball shoes are nothing more than a gift and free advertising for Nike. How is this not considered part of pay for play?

It’s one of the main reasons for the Ducks getting so many recruits. They flash the gear and if you are a 17 year old kid, your eyes light up. You get to keep it or sell it after you graduate. May seem like a trivial thing for adults but kids don’t behave or think rationally. It was the main reason Thibadeoux decided to go there, even though Bama would have been by far the better choice for coaching, development, national exposure, branding, etc. it was pretty clear to folks there that he just cared about shoes and getting his three years over with.

And by the way, the Air Jordan 1 Shattered Backboard in the orange and black colorway is one of the most sought after shoes in the secondary market.

      • 3
        1

Yeah, those UofO kids get issued multiple pairs of custom sneakers each year. There’s a reason none of them actually wear the shoes in the pictures you see. Nobody wants to crease the toes or skuff the soles. It’s like driving a new car off the lot and the instant deprecation in value.

And multiple sneakers per year at $5K a pop on the secondary market adds up pretty fast. It’s still not comporable to a full time salary, but coupled with tuition/room/meals/other gear, it’s a pretty nice haul.

Yes I forget who wrote a book about Nike and Oregon sports and how Phil basically uses Oregon for marketing/exposure.

When you break it down any success that Oregon has can be attributed to sweatshops and child labor.

      • That is the truth. I cant disclose any specifics because of an NDA I had to sign, but I reviewed those factories over there for Nike. Some of the conditions were horrendous and the “rules” in place to punish any worker who boosted the “rules” would make you cringe. Send them a full report on each factory and never heard a word back about what they were going to do about. On the bright side, the paid the bill promptly. But that experience left me with the feeling of never buy Nike again which I haven’t done in the past 15 years. Only buy the New Balance and Reebok shoes that are made in the USA. Made cost me a bit more but allows me to sleep with a clearer conscious.

Nicebeav did you see that they offered brody reese a PWO offer?

Honest question. How many of you think players, coaches, recruits, or recruiting sites read this blog? Maybe they’ll see this and start donating because they need nicebeav to find Vidlaks and what not for them.

    • Yeah, I tried replying to you this morning to your original post in the prior thread. Good call on that kid. Does seem suspicious that right after you mentioned the kid, Coach Yray was suddenly following him, followed by an offer going out. Seems like the Beavs are trying to boost attendance by offering walk on spots to every in state kid possible.

Gotta find the kids with the biggest families

David Morris medically retiring. Not that unexpected. Body just couldn’t stay healthy. One of those guys who could have been really good if not for injuries.

  17. 6
    1

Morris retiring. It’s probably for the best for both the team and him. A healthy Morris would be great but that’s few and far between. He basically is just using up a scholarship and never playing. Best of luck to him! He really seemed like a quality young man. Loved his commitment story.

    • Probably best for Morris personally to not have to deal with the pain while feeling the pressure to try to play. Feel bad for him though for what might have been if he was able to keep his feet healthy. But it has taken down guys like Walton, Bowie, Oden and others … so don’t in the least for making that difficult decision.

    • Too bad. Nice to see a player out there who’s speed and awareness catch the eye and make a difference. I hope his body recovers and he can enjoy himself outside of football.

Did he have injury issues in HS, or just bad luck in college?

  18. Angry, since you were asking yesterday: have a look at EXMGF. Solid new copper producer in Arizona that dropped 13% yesterday with no news (I’m guessing some fund sold a chunk to cover short losses). They’re back around pre-COVID resistance level. If you’re bullish on copper over the long-term, it’s worth a look.

      • It wasn’t me. It’s not my type of investment or speculation, though. I need to be okay holding the stock if it turns against me, and I don’t feel that way about an unknown penny stock. As Mark Twain said about miners, they’re a hole in the ground with a crook standing above it.

      • Not really. Via SLV you can run up the price and still not take delivery. Delivery in the futures market was always the hangup. I have been wondering for 10 years why nobody has done this, so I’m definitely getting in on this.

          • I think it’s an absolute joke that’s going to have major repercussions. People already hate wall st, and now this. This isn’t going to help with the populism issue. Everyone plays by the same rules. Portnoy made a good analogy that it’s like football if you go for it on 4th and don’t make it (like Smith), the Ref gives you two more downs.

          • It’s not just trading apps that are newer to the game, the largest, most established brokers did the same thing (Schwab, TD, eTrade, etc.)

I have a very small position in GME just for entertainment value and have been following throughout the day. There have been several periods where brokers only allowed selling that coincide with the biggest dips of the day. Once they resumed accepting purchase orders, the price came back up. All they do is give you a message like “we’re restricting certain trades on this security in order to protect you from market volatility.”

            …right.

          • 3
            1

what Robinhood did today was the biggest theft in plain sight in history. Froze out the Reddit guys so the neo-Libs running the Hedge funds could minimize their losses. In normal times, which these aren’t, someone would go to jail for such market manipulation. Where’s FDR when you need him?

          • Once Robinhood allowed purchases again (afterhours), it started spiking. It got down to around $195 during trading hours, now it’s back up to ~$315.

          • Citadel owns robinhood and Melvin capital management. Melvin is one of the short sellers of GME and stands to lose billions. Citadels senior advisor is ex federal reserve chairman Ben Bernanke. Sounds like conspiracy to me.
I hope those reddit dudes keep it up.
BTW, the memes coming out about this situation are fantastic.

        • Well, I purchased some SLV options about two hours ago, and they’re up 140% already. This is insane. I’m going to hold the options and sell out of my SLV position (it’s only moved 2.5% in this same time period). The downside to the option is so little.

          • Angry what’s your opinion on this amc short squeeze?

I am only a couple months into this investing thing. I got quite a bit riding on amc now @ $9 per. Not make or break my life style, but dude reading about this thing, it could become a revolution type event. Hoping for a good $ return next week bro. Wish me luck and hope some others here are in for the ride also

          • My opinion is in a best case it takes about 5 days to close out a large short position. I’m not sure how long the AMC one has been going on. But at 5-7 days after the covering starts I’d begin my exit (not all at once). Biggest risk is government regulation stopping the small guy from winning, so I’d be concerned about that, too.

Ultimate advice: sell when your gut says so.

Social change always seems to swing a bit too far before it settles back down a little. The Civil War may no longer be the formal name for “correctness” purposes, but I think it will certainly continue to be the informal name for many years to come.

    • 7
      2

The “Civil War” moniker was a simple pun. Civil, defined: “adhering to the norms of polite society” (and traditionally, “polite” was the very definition of Oregon’s political culture) juxtaposed with the common sports trope comparing athletic contests with combat. but the ignorant literalists among us in high places (like Ed Ray) don’t have a good working knowledge of simple linguistics like this so they got stampeded by people posing as having a perspective on history when it was actually just moral posturing.

By the way, I appreciated the comment above about this site’s “greatest hours,” including the defense of Heimlich which I tried to highlight at the time by providing the site with some third party legal insight. The common denominator associated with these two travesties is Ed Ray.

      • 7
        4

IMO, that’s why Pat Casey retired. He didn’t get much support, if any at all, from Ray during and after the Heimlich situation.

    • Mean reversion was the most likely course to follow. Good to see that Lucas is still filling it up, but they really need some help off the bench.

      • Just really disappointing to see them get outrebounded so badly. I didn’t get to c the game but from the stats they outrebounded by 18 and shot about 10% better which could be offensive rebound putbacks so close. About half of rebounding is effort so that’s what sucks.

  19. 2

Nice article today in another site regarding the pitching depth, quality of starting rotation, and some very solid position player talent with some hitting prowess. It sounds like if the Beavers can stay healthy and they get the season in, the Beavers could have another shot at a nice post season run. I’m anxious to see how they do this season

  20. 4
    8

Anyone catch the stat line on Talia von Oelhoffen yesterday vs. Huskies….13 points, 6 boards, 7 assists and 3 steals. Not bad production for someone who should still be in high school but now playing in only her second collegiate game. She reminds me of Pivec, especially her body and ability to get boards. I think she has a higher offensive ceiling than Pivec though. I guess time will tell…..this team is set up nicely for next season if everyone returns and is healthy (Kennedy Brown, namely).

Regarding donations, things are slowly getting better. They have trickled in a few per day. We doubled overall. Need about $30 more per month in donations to make this…”viable”…I’m not even sure what that term means, because I wouldn’t work for this low a wage anywhere else in life. But I’m willing to do it here if we can get there. We have until April, so I’m slightly optimistic.

    • 6

Good thing this isn’t your job! My hobbies have never made me money, in fact I don’t break even. Some thing I just do because I enjoy them and they don’t cost me money.

      • On Monday a guy up North had free horse manure, so I went and picked some up. Had a great convo with him, and now he’s a source for free manure. His quote, “I have horse shit any time you need it.”

Got that laid down and much to Oldbeav’s delight got some new tomato seeds (Marzano for sauce). Growing hot peppers and eggplant, too! Ditching potatoes this year. Too much space for their yield.

        • +1 for the new seeds
-1 on the horse shit. Any organic matter helps but, unless it’s really old, horse shit usually brings in plenty of weed seeds. Cow shit much better if you can find it, something about those extra stomachs!
You proved me wrong on the old seed thing, maybe your horse shit will be no problem at all.
Sorry you don’t have space for Yukon Golds.

          • It was in between. He had it composting since September…there were some clumps, but it was breaking down as well and looking like dirt. Maybe 60-40 looking like dirt. It was also steaming in the pile (he made me shovel my own!)…

I threw it down already, so we will see what happens. Hope I didn’t introduce weeds.

          • Okay Helmsey, now I’m paranoid, so I wrote the guy. His response when I asked about chemicals.

“Not to my knowledge, my wife is absolutely fanatical about the quality of the feed she buys. I’ve been giving away my Manure for 3years and had no complaints”

Sounds like it should be okay.

          • reply to angry – Here’s another link – https://www.finegardening.com/article/how-to-avoid-herbicide-carryover – sounds like your supplier – & the horse – is fine. I know an amazing gardener – who had that happen. Couldn’t figure it out – asked – the horse source had been feeding in chemically-treated (I think there’s a list in the first link I sent to you) pastures. I read it takes 3 years for the herbicides to dissipate. I hope the guy isn’t put off by your question – sorry – apparently the carry-over herbicides are especially brutal to tomatoes. Note: the carryover occurs with any composted material that’s been treated with herbicides.

Hotels are fine. I have stayed in a couple this past year. They are very much needing the business and will do everything they can to prevent their hotels from being in the news for covid outbreaks.

But since the games are in AZ, from what my buddy says, COVID is a myth there. Everything is open.

  22. Vidlak should be doubly pleased he opted for the Beavs. Big Sky was going to have a few games this spring but bailed. the Montana State coach had had enough – Choate, good coach – bailed and went to Texas to work for Sarkasian.

  23. Been offline most of the day because of work, but noticed we picked up another PWO. Safety Tyeson Thomas, who used to be an in state kid but moved to Texas when sports shut down in Oregon.

        • Yeah, I saw that right after I posted. I figured they must have had at least 20 FTs. Weird game I guess as I didn’t get to see it. Hopefully, my DVR recorded it so I can watch it then. How does a game go with only 10 FTs? I guess both teams played exceptional defense (72-64). LOL

    • Robinhood wasn’t ready for that much volume. All their cash started to get tied up in the clearing house and they have to wait for those transactions to clear.

    • You should leave Robinhood out of principle alone. The thing is Etrade, Scwab, and others did it, too. I’m with Fidelity, and I didn’t see anything like this, but they did limit fractional share trading of all the names.

        • Wish I had followed my instinct on gme, but I did on amc. Monday is purchase day for a lot of the shorts. And Tuesday-Thursday more shorts expire. I think/hope I can come out on top of this thing. Never been involved in this type of thing before, and a novice trader. I put in a pretty large amount for me. Hopefully I don’t get hosed somehow

But I use E*TRADE and Thursday the last couple hours they blocked amc for sure. I could not get more shares until Friday am.

    • You can transfer all your positions and cash using ACATS, but Robinhood will charge you a $75 fee to do so. Some brokers will reimburse you the ACATS fee, while others have bonuses for transfers (up to $900 depending on how much $ you transfer). I personally use ETRADE but most of the online brokers with free trades have similar service and functionality. ACATS process is pretty simple, just have your new brokerage account initiate a transfer of all your positions.

  24. In response to the Az baseball games, the beaver website (in the last paragraph) made mention there would be no fans at PAC 12 games this season but did not address anything about a PAC 12 team playing non conference games. They noted you should get any information at surprisestadium.com. I checked… .no information, even a mention about the college games. My advice.make sure you can get into the games before spending money on a motel or even making the trip. Last. Beavs play 3 or 4 vs Grand Canyon Univ down here the next weekend. Not sure if fans are allowed.

    • indeed, the website says no fans “until further notice” is given, which isn’t promising but it isn’t a categorical rejection of fans attending at Goss this season either.

    • Grand Canyon has a sweet little ball park. seats 4,000. NW of downtown PHX so the same quadrant Surprise is in. GCU is letting a few students into their basketball games so that seems to augur well for their being some admission to outdoor baseball games, at least for their students. this situation is worth monitoring. the key to admission in Surprise is the fate of MLB. If Spring Training is postponed, I’m guessing fans won’t be allowed in for the baseball tournament either. If Spring Training proceeds on schedule, I think the opposite is true.

    • There wrre some missed calls for sure and the no call on Ethan could have gone either way. In a low scoring game, beavs made too many turnovers. This OSU team has dome very good talent. Aliteshea’s dunk was a monster. The defense played tough and the tesm showed lots of moxy. Just watched the no call on Ethan and that should have been a foul on UCLA.

New year, same story for OSU sports in general-no respect or fairness by the conference refs. No longer surprised or exorcised about it, will never change as far as I can see. OSU is the predetermined doormat of the conference and will be kept in its collective place by the powers that be.
