It seems like Mitch is finally showing is warts, as is Joe Casey. Time is the great equalizer, as they say…

  1. The school stream has been very good quality lately, all games will be carried.
Temps in the high 70’s/low 80’s, enough to turn some long outs into HR?….not likely
Some wind forecast to be left to right, maybe cause Casey problems near the foul line? With sun in his eyes? Hope that door is closed!

If Mitch has these guys fired and focused there is no reason to expect less than a sweep! Da Bears aren’t very competitive this time around.
Some comparisons: (OSU/Cal, both have played 31 games)
    Team BA .285/.255
    Fielding% .985/.968
    ERA 2.55/3.61
    BB allowed 111/95
    WP 35/25
    HBP 45/29
    Strength of Schedule 59/160
    RPI 37/103

    • With all those WP, HBP, and BB does it show unearned runs? Let’s just give the other team 5 base runners per game (111+45/31 games). That doesn’t count anyone already on base and getting to advance due to those issues in addition to a wild pitch.

      • Pitching was supposed to be one of the main strengths of this squad. While I agree with Bill that run support has been lacking and is a factor in pitchers pressing to make up for that, I doubt it is the whole story. Seems to me there is something lacking in the training, practice, coaching of this group of arms.

However, as disappointing as all those BB/WP/HBP are, that 2.55 ERA and those mistakes all add up to a 3.01 runs per game allowed. That ranks 4th in the nation according to Warren Nolan. Should be worth a much better W/L record………………not happening due to run support. Seems timely hitting is the biggest area lacking.

Casey got max performance based on fear. If you made dumb mistakes in the field, you lost your spot. Great D was the constant for his teams. You walked people and you didn’t pitch. He stressed his guys in practice so the game stress did not seem much different. He may have been “mean” by the touchy feely standards of today, but he damn sure got results. Much like Saban at Bama, he was only satisfied with perfection. One has only to look at the performance of Troy Claunch to start to wonder if MC was the right choice. He seemed to be a star that was stuck behind a superstar, but now his batting average is down as are his power numbers. He was expected be one of the guys to carry the team and he is not getting it done with the bat. The really mind boggling aspect has been his terrible performance behind the plate. MC was a catcher and we are getting a subpar performance at that position for the first time in what seems like forever.

concur, BeeG. Casey always liked to say, “the players make out the line-up,” which was code for precisely what you describe. If you didn’t perform, you sat. Sadly, Canham is now making out the line-up. He’s moved some guys up to starters who were on the bench early, Forrester comes to mind, but too many guys are now playing and don’t deserve to: Jones and McDowell, principally.

We’re in this spot (that is, a hall of fame coach retiring prematurely) because of two people: Ed Ray, and Joe Casey. Ray, because Pat was furious with the way he hung both him and Heimlich out to dry. If Pat wasn’t convinced he had a ready-made championship caliber team, he might have quit right there at the end of the 2017 season. Joe, because Pat couldn’t stomach the prospect of his son “making out the line up” (that is, not making it into the line up). Baby of the family; three titles in hand; time to move on. In a fashion, this is a replay of the Dennis Erickson scenario, a premature departure from the scene

        • Maybe Joe was pretty well set on OSU by the time Pat realized that he did not want to coach another of his own sons. He placed father/son relationship ahead of continuing to coach, especially understandable in light of the way the Heimlich situation was mishandled by Ed Ray.
He recognized the challenges of having your own kid on the team and felt he mishandled Brett.

I’m not sure Tinkle feels he could have done better with Tres as far as their personal relationship goes, but it really does seem that Tinkle is a better coach without Tres on the team. Not very similar to the Casey’s.

          • Joe actually has very good baseball skills, but has not progressed. Fast and a good arm. Hitting is the issue, like the rest of the squad.

    • Seems Rueck’s on a bit of a roll. Talia von Oelhoffen seemed like a quick learner/early contributor and with experience should be be more of an impact player. The loss of Goforth is unfortunate, but that sounded like homesickness more than dissatisfaction with the program.

        • That’s borne out by her fathers tweets which were linked here awhile back.
In other WBB news, associate head coach Brian Holsinger has moved on the be HC at Montana; no word yet on his replacement. Any chance Mandy will return?………..naw, not likely. But angry can dream!

  3. Does anyone have any insight as to how the staff sees the DT situation? Do they think they have younger players who are ready to step up? Are they comfortable with a smaller, more agile player at NT?

We’ve definitely whiffed on some guys, but it doesn’t seem to me that the staff is putting the level of urgency on staffing the NT position that many of us think they should. Doesn’t seem like a priority. Anyone know what the disconnect is?

    • They have been trying to follow up with most DT transfers that become available, which tells me theyre wanting to find someone, but either havent found the right fit, or they have giys they have liked, but cant find someone who wants to come here yet.
Whittley still sounds like a question mark. Wont practice this spring. Who kkows if he’ll he able to get himself healthy and in game shape by Fall. That’s a pretty big risk of youre counting on him. I think they still need 1 more big body in the middle to take those reps. None of our other guys seem big/strong enough for that role except for maybe Sio, but he’s needed on the OL.

  4. MBB still pursuing PG’s. We’re apparently in the top 3 for Duke grad transfer Jordan Goldwire. Not much of a scorer, but he was 1st team all-ACC Defensive team and first in the conference in A-TO ratio.

  5. Pitch #73 from Abel hits the batter, Canham pulls him immediately. A new approach by Mitch?
Minimal, but Abel had run support today.

    His line: 4BB, 5K, 1WP, 1HBP, 2hits, 1ER

I can’t watch this anymore. I know some people quit watching basketball in the past, I feel the same way about my favorite sport, baseball. This is just brutal. I have to take a break. I don’t care if they somehow come back and win this game.

    • I care. Casey’s teams actually came from behind fairly frequently. I know this team doesn’t have the talent that Casey’s teams had, but if Mitch can rally them to come from behind then that’s a good step toward earning respect. We’ll see if he can actually do that.

  7. 15-8 Beavs, on to the t9
A seven run lead and needing three outs and Mitch brings in Mulholland?….think I’d stay with Salgado

      • Hopefully giving up the first CW sweep in how long(?) inspired a play-to-the-end ethic today.

The CW sweep loss should be a huge motivator that LED to this win.

Looks like another MBB scholarship has opened up.

“Per a source, Oregon state forward Dearon Tucker is in the transfer portal. 6’10” sophomore that averaged 2.7 and 1.7 rebounds.”

      • It could also be Tucker wants to start somewhere. He was a good depth player.
This is probably the toughest transfer so far because he was still young and had definite potential. Big men don’t grow on trees.

Hopefully WT and co. have the inside lane on a transfer.

        • The portal stuff is just insane. I bet there will be quite a few players that will wish they stayed put. A fair amount may end up without a scholarship and then realize just how “exploited” they were getting an education without debt.

        • 1
          1

I sometimes wonder how conversations go between coaches and players at this level. Did Tinks give Tucker the courtesy of a heads up about signing Marial or was it a surprise to Tucker? I can see Tucker looking at this situation and thinking his already precarious playing time is set to shrink again this upcoming season.

With the transfer portal, it’s going to become 7-8 players getting enough court time to satisfy them and the rest of the team is comprised of walk-ons. God forbid when a team gets hit with multiple injuries!

  9. Y’all are missing it.
b7 brings the turning point today and Preston is part of it, although not the main story this time.
Melton advances to 3b on Ober’s single; during Obers wide turn rundown Melton scores. Ober safely back to first.
    2-1 good guys

  10. Game of transfer musical chairs is just beginning. For the guys leaving, they are striking while the iron is hot. Teams getting them think they are getting a good player from an elite 8 squad just as Beav fans are excited about Marial, even though he’s played minimally.

I would think Tucker is the most likely to come back if he chooses. He’d be in line for a starting role next year.

Tinkle could now afford to grab a guy who has more eligibility. Likely have to go the Alitishe route and find a good player in the small conference ranks.

  11. #38 gets save #38!
Guess getting a look at him last night didn’t do the Bears any good.

In other news, combined pitching stats today: ZERO HBP or WP, One BB.

Since this board established judging baseball coaches on 2 games is a thing, I guess we learned today that Canham is legit

  13. Casey (.267) gets his first start of the series. In the 7 hole, he K’s first time up, avoids the clubhouse door on a play in LF.
OT: Have ya ever seen so many catchers interference calls?
I know ya haven’t seen so many HBP’s! Maybe yesterday was the end of that stuff.

  14. Forrester demonstrates a 30″ (?) vertical pulling down a high throw from Armstrong. No out but a nice stop, didn’t expect he’d jump that high.
Good stop on that by Armstrong, he follows with a nice job on 4-6-3 DP
    b4, 3-1 Cal

  15. OT, I know this has been talked about on here before. I’m cutting to cable cord, mostly because Pacific Power is going to run my power underground for about 200 ft and pull 2 old power poles that run cable to my house. This means I would have to pay Comcast to run the cable underground, its big money that I’m not willing to pay for. So we’re going to go with Star Link and do the streaming thing moving forward. Which service has the pac12 channels? Who has a variety of good college coverage? Thanks for the help.

P Jones looks overmatched every time I see him up to the plate. He was very promising as a freshmen but his batting routine looks like it makes him late on his swing each pitch. He drops the bat behind his shoulder during the wind-up and never catches up to the speed of the pitch, and can’t hit anything but a foul ball.

  17. Beavs win 5-3, some clutch 2 out hits and a combined pitching line of: ZERO HBP, ZERO WP, 2 BB.
Team comes from behind in all three games this weekend, confidence building eventhough the competition level is what it is.

Hit leader today?…….Casey, the only guy with 2 hits.

Oh, and for those who decided to boycott today’s game, ya missed 4 DP’s by the Beavs and some nice baserunning as well.

      The good news….

At the halfway point of conference play they Beavs are all alone in first place.

      The bad news….

The series wins/sweeps against the Pac-12 bottom feeders is what got them there. The remaining series are against the Arizona schools, LA schools and Stanford. Murderers row.

Anyone that expects this team to remain in first place needs their head examined.

      • Hard to argue with that. Many here were looking for a hosting slot in post season, that’s still in play; but not a lock by any means.

        • I can’t imagine the NCAA rewarding too many Regionals to teams that can only have a few dozen fans in the stands. Not while the SEC and Texas schools are hosting sellouts.

  18. Everyone seems to be down on Casey, granted his BA is hovering round .260 but he’s 4th on the team in HR and tied for 2nd on RBI.

  19. Nothing noteworthy after a week of spring football camp? Any individuals or units standing out?

Hope Lindsey’s motorcycle accident injury isn’t too serious and it’s not the only news…

  20. Good news bad news for baseball.

Good news, swept Cal, a loss there really hurts the RPI as it would compound the other bad losses.

Bad/good news, the hardest part of the schedule starts Friday. Of the conference opponents left, only USC has a bad RPI. UC Irvine is decent as well.

Bad news – have to play Portland twice more this season with one on Tuesday. These are absolute must wins. The best lineup must play and the best available pitchers have to throw. Can’t lose to Loyola Marymount either. Losses here sink any bid to host regionals.

RPI is in the high 30s. Have to win the majority of the remaining series with one sweep and maybe two sweeps of conference opponents. Top 8 seed would require them to win out. Barely hanging in there for a top 16 seed. Current playing trend would put them at a 2/3 seed in regionals which sounds about right.

    • Baseball plays UP tomorrow then UCI this weekend. Then they finish out season with brutal stretch against P12 elite. Need to win 38 games for top 16 seed… 7 non-conference games remaining and 15 conference games remaining. I’d put the over/under for total wins at 36. 40 wins and P12 title gets top 8 seed. 38-39 = top 16. 36-37 we’re on the road unless that’s enough to win P12 which should be top 16 seed. 34-35 we’re on the bubble. 33 and we’re staying home. If I had to guess, I’d say we’re sitting at 35-18 overall and 16-11 in P12 heading into last series against Stanford needing to sweep to get top 16 seed.

OT, I know Angry mentioned he was into surf rock, so I figured I’d pass him his fix for the day. You should check out “Nick Shoulders – Surf De Mardi Gras”.

Def not a rock artist but one my favorite artists. He can yodel, whistle, and flat out play anything.

Literally anything, even a mouth bow. Check out “Nick Shoulders – Mouthbow Demo”, I think angry might have a new instrument to build!

He’s def a different cat but when its genuine I like it! haha
Yeah I love his videos, the snakes and waterfall video is neat to me. Nothing special, just him playing the creek with his dog.

He said he learned yodeling by yelling at his neighbor. He said a yodel is just a controlled yell.

Glad you both enjoyed it, he is a talented artist.

  22. Still nothing on the status of Tyjon, but i did notice that a bunch of our coaches all started following UW transfer WR Marquis Spiker. He was a 2018 4* guy who played with Hank Bachmeier at Murieta Valley in CA

  23. Julien Franklin was definitely looking for playing time. He signed with Cal Poly, one of the worst D-1 programs currently (4-20 this year). I hope he finds it!

  24. Looking at the remainong conference schedule with ASU, AZ, SC, UCLA and Stanford, I could see 6-9 and best case 9-6. So 16-14 or 19-11. I think the ducks probably win the conference as they have UCLA, WA, WSU, Cal and Furd and Utah.and finish 20-10. Interesting because there doesn’t appear to be a dominant team in the conference this year
. Heck, maybe the beavers start consistently producing at the plate and their pitchers show more of the same as they did against the bears. Because of the challenges at the plate, I want to see more small and mufacturing runs.

  25. WBB: traitor Campbell drags another coach away from Graves staff. Top international recruiter, and his wife who is (for now) the director of quack WBB operations, will also head to SacState.

Sac State?….gottta be different than selling swoosh to both foreign and domestic players.

        • When did GS post trivial stuff about the ducks? His stuff was laced with anti duck tone but he didn’t post irrelevant information from what I could tell. Why bang on someone when they are not here to defend themself? It seems to be kind of a below the belt reaction. He was banned so why the need to bring up the topic?

          • Because it was every duck story from multiple sources several times a day. Im not here for the anti-duck echo chamber. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s fun. But story after story after story gets old. Even some of the beaver headlines went right to duck bashing.
And I’m just repeating what most on here are thinking.

          • OK you’re right this should not be a Duck bashing board but stating it was several times
from multiple sources daily is just an exaggeration. I read his comments and many times they had nothing to do with the ducks and when they did it was usually in response to apparent duck fans on this board bashing the beavers. Either way, don’t you think it’s time to let the GS issue die? Time to move on….

          • Haha! He might of pulled it off if he wouldn’t have defended his alter ego. Damn, you forced him off his VPN lol? He’s probably wearing his Tin Foil hat right now.

  26. I don’t know if we have any Mariners fans but I am thoroughly enjoying this season. You want to talk about how to rebuild a franchise. The GM Dipoto in the span of 5 years has completely turned around the team. This team in a rebuilding year is a joy to watch. Play amazing defense, pitch well… have a few good hitters, not many but win with small ball… they are up on the dodgers currently which is cool see… as a Beavs, blazers and Mariners fan I haven’t had a lot to root for over my lifetime… The Mariners might be the one that becomes consistently successful… plus they developed our baseball coach

    • It’s early. The Mariners always revert to who they are over the course of the season. One thing you can count on is Mariners not making the playoffs. If they begin to show promise, don’t fret… an injury or head scratching trade is just around the corner. I’m a lifelong fan and have been fooled way too many times to count. Don’t get your hopes up my friend. Trust me, they’ll find a way to remind everyone why they’re the single worst franchise in mlb history

      • Well, Paxton’s already out for the season. If Haniger, Crawford and France can keep it up, Seager can get back to his usual numbers, and Lewis can come back without missing a beat, that gives them a decent offense. I just find it hard to believe every guy on the roster is going to have a career year.

      • If we are talking about the old mariners, than you are correct. At the start of last season even with the pandemic something felt different. If you remember they almost made the playoffs last season. They weren’t projected to be even close. This year the west seems weaker than most years. The fact that the mariners are in first place right now with the team they have currently is crazy. Not only will they get Kyle Lewis back, they’ll call up Kelenic soon. They’ll have one of the youngest most talented outfields in baseball. The bullpen is solid, we have Graveman who is a unique bullpen guy. You can bring him in high leverage situations early. He’s a shutdown pitcher who can go 3 innings, no one can touch him. He’ll fall back to earth a bit as the season goes. Hopefully that coincides with the offense getting better.

These aren’t the days of Jack Z making terrible trades. Dipoto made what will go down as one of the most lopsided trades ever. He traded Diaz and Cano for Kelenic and Dunn. Dunn is already starting and Kelenic would be starting if they weren’t manipulating his service time. Plus it rid them of Cano’s giant contract. If you look at the payroll and what they are producing on the field, this organization knows what they are doing.

        • “The fact that the mariners are in first place right now with the team they have currently is crazy.”

No. It isn’t. Less than 20 games into the regular season. Seen this before from the suck Mariners. So, dream on.

If they’re still in first at the all star break then I’ll give them a punchers chance.

It’s the Astros division to lose.

          • When have you seen this since Dipoto took over? I don’t think he’s led anyone astray, he said 2021 was the year but we lost a year of development due to COVID. So 2022 will be the year we take a big step.

Like you, I am always prepared for the overhype and used to the struggles but everything he has said has lined up. I usually not ever bullish on the mariners. Dipoto turned a bottom 5 farm system into a top 5 system over the course of 5 years!!!. That in itself is a crazy feat.

Everyone knows MLB is built on player development. The mariners are doing better than any team out there. Dipoto had a bare cupboard when he arrived, give him some credit. You sound a lot like Harold Reynolds and have the old school mind set. When I sat next to him at the Ucks game in Texas, I asked him what he thought. He said Dipoto was an idiot for doing all these trades and trading away everyone. I think it just shows, people have a tough time adapting to new strategies.

Hell ask Mike Riley. I am all for being conservative but there is a point where you become stagnant. Don’t be that way, no one likes stagnant whiskey.

I say all this to say this: The mariners will be a playoff team come October. Book it

          • Sorry. My response showed down further in this thread. Not sure why.

But if you’d like a perfect example of how all of those come together?

Go look at how the dodgers were able to practically rob the Red Sox blind in the trade for Mookie Betts.

Signing him to an extension for 12 or 13 years is also an example of what not to do. That WILL come back to bite them in the ass.

  27. 18

“Everyone knows MLB is built on player development. The mariners are doing better than any team out there.”

Wrong. Name for me the rookies of the year they’ve had in the last 5 years. In any level. AA? AAA?

Player development is only part of the equation.

I’d argue the draft holds more value than developing players. To an extent. Meaning you can draft a bazillion ball players. But if you can’t develop a few then they hold no value. If you can? Well, then you have bargaining chips to use via trades. So you are partially correct…..

    1. Smart upper management
    2. Draft
    3. Player development
    4. Trades
    5. Free agency
    6. Some luck

Not even going to touch 5.

Yes. The Mariners are getting better and signs point towards being on a better path.

Let’s ask Mike Riley how his approach won him multiple conference titles? Poor example dude and absolutely does not prove your point.

But you only hear what you want to hear. Mariners are a fringe playoff team. At best.

I say this as a long suffering Dodger fan that finally witnessed the end of the suffering last fall.

    • 12

MLB lists Seattle as the #3 farm system in all of baseball. It was near the bottom when Dipoto took over. And you want a rookie of the year at any level? They have the reigning ROY in the majors. Do your homework.

        • Whiskey… you said name one. I did. And you’re response is “cool”.

You also said the draft is more important than player development and your explanation was that you can draft a million players…. but if you can’t DEVELOP any then it’s pointless. WHAT??

    • Kyle Lewis was the AL ROY last year…(I give that it was a short season)

MLB is built on either being rich, or tanking for years to build cheaply. Only the Rays are the exception to that rule. Mariners are trying to doing the latter, Dodgers doing the former. Padres did the tanking route and are now cashing in their prospects to win it all.

Mariners are not even a fringe playoff team. Not enough pitching to carry an entire season.

    • Whiskey, I don’t know why you took this stance, I was just excited about the team. I def can tell you are a Dodgers fan lol, because you would be all in too about the team the Mariners have.

Rookies of the year don’t mean as much as you think. You act like that is some sort of measuring stick. Baseball more than any sport, is a true team sport. So a better measuring stick, is farm rankings, and how many top prospects you have in the top 100. When you have 6 in the top 100, you are doing very well.

Not even gonna touch your view on development lol. Regarding free agency. Dipoto is a smart man. 25th overall payroll. This means once he feels good about our young guys and sees which players thrive, he will have all the money in the world to grab big name free agents to fill in personnel gaps. Its hard to get big name players to Seattle, they have to overpay to get them there. Remember Cano, prime example.

Is there another Mike Riley that I don’t know about, who won a conference championship? The one I know never won one or made a BCS bowl for that matter. I would argue the BCS bowl game would be similar to a postseason run so there is my correlation. Riley is great example of not adapting, doing the same ol regardless of results. He wouldn’t fire coaches, pull QB’s, or change really anything about his offense. Remind me how he did at Nebraska? Even with all the resources he couldn’t get it done. I liked Riley more than most but if he is the definition of time passing you by. He didn’t evolve, Dipoto does, huge difference.

You said the Mariners had no chance to make the playoffs, now you are saying they are fringe team? You are more up and down than that meme based coin on 4/20.

Can we just be happy that the Mariners are headed in the right direction and realize they are making the right moves?

  28. Lineups posted, Casey batting cleanup, Dukart sits (vs RHP ?), Grettler at 3b and Logan catching. Fuchs dh again. Forrester also sits.

Anyone else nervous with Logan behind the plate?

So “HolyJumpinUpandDownMartha” is once again Swammi, who clearly has some neglect issues he needs addressed via years of therapy. My advice is to use the block user feature on any weirdo, because it is very likely him.

  30. Can confirm from a players parent Lindsey was in a motorcycle accident. Sounds like team doesn’t know details. I know that doesn’t really help.

    • For me, that really does help, thanks.
Don’t remember Wood Chomp posting in the past but his posts about Lindsey struck me as possibly coming from a first responder.
Story will come out eventually, hope Tyjon suffers no long term effects.

Once again, we see the lack of a true/talented beat reporter.

      • If the team doesnt know yet, i dont know that a beat reporter would, so i guess i understand the lack of coverage in this case. They should read AB.

        • Disagree. A true beat reporter develops sources and gets around “official” channels. Most of what we now see rely, in large part, on regurgitating what the SID passes along.

The “team” may not know but dollars to doughnuts there are team members, housemates, administrative personnel, classmates, and others (parents?) who do know. Takes legwork to locate and gain their trust.

But, you’re right, they should still read AB

    • Casey coming around vs lower level competition? Two hits Sunday and again today.
He’s got 3 games vs Anteaters and 2 vs LMU to get his mojo before facing UCLA (RPI 37); then rougher arms after that.

Yeah, sure. I’m actually having a hard time with this situation…that someone so ill would wind up here. I’m being serious. It’s disturbing.

  31. “The Mariners are getting better and signs point towards being on a better path.”

    Yup. I wrote exactly that.

I never said they had no chance at the playoffs.

I’ll give you the opportunity unlike mr dipshit that has zero reading comprehension skills.
