Mitch has a much needed winning streak going. Some pressure off him for now. This is going to be a tough series with the “Anteaters” being 22-11 and historically very good. “Anteaters” has to be the worst name in history, btw.

It looks like the game will be on ESPN here. That’s the only telecast I’m finding.

  1. I was going to say first but decided instead to comment that we seem to be picking up in recruiting including going after some big guys.

Just saw we offered Maliki-Donaldson on nb twitter. Potential is through the roof but I’m shocked to see us offering such a highly rated recruit this late. I’ll take it as a good sign that someone on the staff developed a connection in recruiting.

It’s really interesting to see the sizes of players we are offering this cycle. One thing I noticed is the height and size of the DT offers. 6’2+ and 300+ across the board. It’s also interesting because a traditional 3-4 DT tops out around 6’2 for leverage reasons but there is hybrid systems that prefer a guy with a wing span like the Ravens with Ngata or Fletcher Cox on the current jaguars.

Wideout and CBs are mostly huge. DE are very tall and the OLB/EDGE are very very tall and athletic.

  2. Anteaters have a history of being tough on the Beavs but it’s not unreasonable to expect two of three for the good guys. ‘Eaters have an RPI of 50 vs Beavs 26, so not the 66 point spread we saw vs the Bears; still, the SOS differential is similar: Beavs 58, ‘eaters 153. Can’t take anything for granted but I won’t be surprised if Beavs sweep.

FWIW, Parker will be calling the series from Reser………watching a stream.

  3. Um not the announcement I expected. Alatishe announcing he is entering his name into the NBA draft but will maintain his college eligibility. I’d put money on him coming back but never know.

    • He’ll be back. It’s really good for him to get feedback. He’s probably never heard a scouting report from a pro team before.

He does have length and athleticism to play in the pros. He’s still somewhat raw which tells scouts he has a decent amount of upside.

The report he’ll get back will say his pros are defending, effort and rebounding. The areas he needs to work on, a reliable mid range shot, physicality in the paint, and ball security can be better. The one thing that really holds him back is free throw shooting. The worst free throw shooting at PF or SF in the pros still avg 70 percent. He was at 54 pct.

Let’s hope he gets a report that motivates him to become an even better player.

    • Calloo should also enter to get feedback. I think he’s got the most pro potential. His game fits the current nba style. He has range, height, length. The issue for him is defending and physicality when rebounding. Somehow shot better from deep than in the paint. Great free throw shooter. The big man can’t shoot free throws era is gone now.

      • Calloo definitely has a higher floor than Alatishe. However, I would argue Alatishe has the higher ceiling. He has unreal length, athleticism, and showed flashes of dominance. He did all this while being very raw skill wise and I mean very raw. He only started playing the game as a junior in high school.

Both are great and have NBA potential. Tinkle is smart with the archetype he is recruiting. Long athletic wings are key in the game today.

  4. Just a note on this article on spring depth chart.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2021/04/oregon-state-football-depth-chart-mid-spring-practice-edition.html

The 2 deeps on the line this spring and possibly in the fall is mostly Smith recruits now. While not definitive I take it as a god sign that the talent level is improving. Note that Suing, Nous and Eldridge are all out this spring.

Smith 2018 recruits noted in 2 deeps: Leavengood, Gray, Brewer, Kipper (transfer)
2018 unmentioned: Shawn Elliot (moved to DE), Ronnie Audette (never showed)
2019 2 deeps: Thomas Sio, Nathan Eldridge (transfer -out for spring), Jacob Ferenczi
2019 unmentioned: Rob Vandarlaan (transfer to ECU), Nick Suing (Walk on – injured)
2020 2 deeps: Taliese Fuaga, Sorenson (transfer), Tanner Miller (walk on)
2020 unmentioned: Cooper Darling, Tyler Morano, Joe Quillen

    NON-SMITH 2 DEEPS
    Welsfry, Nous

    Anderson on Roster:
    Nous, Welsfry, Napierkowski

Basically all the Anderson recruits who would be juniors or seniors this year left the program, quit football or elected to graduate and not take another year of eligibility.

    • I think you can sometimes find the right fit for certain guys. When they are interviewed they say they come to experience something new and Corvallis is a place where they can focus on school and football. Seems it takes a more mature and forward thinking athlete.

      • Sometimes guys have personal situations where they see the need to move somewhere else for separation. There’s plenty of reasons why someone would want to move across the country. It’s all about finding the right fit.

I think the ones that probably have the lowest success rate (just intuitively, not based on any data) are the ones who are only moving because it’s their only P5 offer.

    • I had noticed that since Blue Adams joined, the team appears to have cast a wider recruiting net — more offers to East Coast based secondary players, as well as more highly rated picks.

    Blue Adams:
Lancer mentioned a wider net being cast since Adams joined the staff. Here’s Elijah Jones, a senior transfer from Kansas, on why he was attracted to play for Adams:
“Coach Blue, he was in the league, he coached in the league,” Jones said. “He knows what it takes to get there. He keeps pushing us everyday and he’s not letting up on anything. That’s great for us and it gets us ready for the next level.”

    And Blue on Jones:
“,,,he shows flashes. But that consistency, we’ve got to definitely work on…
I’ve seen some guys playing at the next level; he’s not there yet. But he has those traits.”
“I’m not gonna change. I’m gonna continue to push it on him and continue to expect him to be great,” Adams said. “You’ll know when he’s great, because he’ll have made up his mind to be great. We’re off and running at that point.”

  6. Here we go again, Abel in the b2 bases loaded (1 out) has 1 HBP, 1WP, 2 BB.
Abel escapes this time, ‘eaters get no runs and leave 3 on base.

      • I still think he’s our best starter. If I was playing 4 games and had to pick any pitcher to start and bookend it’s Abel.

        • 2
          1

I’d almost rather have Hjerpe #2 to settle the series if game 1 goes badly. If Able is on it’s likely a win. If he’s off it’s competitive leaning to loss.

          • Your position assumes Hjerpe will win, if that’s the case I’d prefer he go in game #1 to put the opponent behind the eight ball.

          • I feel like Hjerpe is better than most teams #2. Abel is a solid starter to incredible, when he’s on he can beat anyone. So I’d rather have Abel keep working out his rust and maybe keep a game going against another teams best pitcher.

        • Agreed, but I think Abel’s command should improve with time. Abel has 13 SO/9 so his stuff is still elite, but Tommy John requires some time to regain your command. Just look at how erratic Shohei Ohtani has been the past 2 years.

  7. HUGE baserunning mistake by the guy who over-ran second and was the 2nd out of the b9!
Nothing to be gained by going beyond 2nd, solid defense by Claunch/Ober.

Then nice play by Armstrong to get out #3.
On to the t10…..tied at 5

  8. Recently we discussed rituals of batters, Armstrong’s double tap to the helmet with his right hand was mentioned.
Wade Meckler has his own pattern, stretches right foot to reach the front of the box before getting ready to receive the pitch.
    Anyone seen others?

  9. How do y’all describe this team now? Nerve racking, exciting, frustrating, lucky, unlucky, courageous, focused, or ????
I find them especially nerve racking when Abel starts, he seems always “on the edge”.
They are showing a lot of fight lately, coming from behind in several games recently.

    • Talented with unreached potential. Losses to ducks made many lose sense of reality. Have as good of chance as any team to win P12. Could also miss postseason altogether. Need to win this series and then keep battling thru P12.

    • I’d say they are learning how to win hard games. Yes they do have tons of wins but this game felt like a bit of a turning point.

  10. Ant Eaters may be the worst but; unfortunately, Beavers are not that far behind. Still #1 in the Pac-12 and the other Pac Teams will cannibalize each other this weekend while we play nonconference games. Ant Eaters are a very good team, don’t let the name fool you. GO BEAVS!

  11. I wonder if there’s any old school, dead ball-style value in the philosophy of “better to hit ‘em than walk’em.” As a ball player, you accept that getting hit is part of the game, but when the scouting report says “hits a lot of batters” I’m sure that gets in at least a few guys’ heads.

      • If there isn’t an accompanied wildness, I’d guess many players are willing to stick their leg into an inside slider, or elbow into a high breaking ball, but few will be so willing if they aren’t sure where the pitch is going.

Guys like Rob Dibble come to mind, you may get hit but it won’t be your decision. This approach I would be ok with if it means teams aren’t able to calculate when an inside pitch is coming to get hit.

  12. I would say yesterday’s game showed the Beavs can win vs good teams but not consistently. Which means if they make the tourney, a deep run isn’t likely. They still have a talent deficiency at the plate. Hard to believe that any of the guys who are struggling will start to hit better, they are who they are.

  13. “….still have talent deficiency at the plate.” Yes exactly, unless some guys get “on” during the tournament there isn’t enough quality bats in the lineup to cover for a bad outing by a starting pitcher or mistakes made in the field. We’ve been spoiled by that 2018 team, perhaps the best hitting team we’ll ever see….all hitters smart and grinders, I believe the “worst” batters hit in the high .280s, with best hitters up in the .350s.
If this team works on getting SOs down and OBP up by about 25 points, they would go much deeper….perhaps get to a super regional at best.

  14. “We’ve been spoiled by that 2018 team, perhaps the best hitting team we’ll ever see….”

That team also had some dandy pitching, Heimlich, Fehmel, Verberg, Chamberlain, Mulholland, et al…even though some freshman stole the show in the CWS!

  15. I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet. Roman Silva has declared for the NBA draft. It sounds like the same “feedback scenario” as Alitishe. He fully intends to return.

  16. Disappointing way to lose the game after a great comeback. Strikeout looking with the bases loaded and then allow a walk off homerun.

  17. TYJON LINDSEY:
“Among OSU receivers currently on the sideline is Tyjon Lindsey, who was involved in a minor motorcycle accident last weekend. Smith said Lindsey’s injuries aren’t serious, and “there’s a chance” he could resume practice duties during the next two weeks.”

So says the report in the big zero………as our buddy Sidd Finch would say, “you heard it here first.”

  18. Sucky way to lose. You’d think in 2021 there’d be enough technology available to determine if a ball was fair or foul. Golf has shot trackers.

Oh well. They played pretty well again today. Hopefully that carries over and they get the W tomorrow

  19. Beavs seem to really like this Travis Throckmorton kid as a potential 2022 QB. They’re sending pretty much every coach after him, which makes me think they must be ready to close the deal. Worth keeping am eye on him.

    https://www.hudl.com/video/3/9899691/60662fbeb5362d13cc6f874c

Offer sheet amd film don’t really blow me away, so I just gotta trust they’re seeing something my untrained eye doesn’t. Maybe one of those late bloomer guys who didnt get seen much because of covid.

    https://247sports.com/Player/Travis-Throckmorton-46102049/

    • FWIW, he’s ranked higher than a few current P12 QB commitments on 247 (Utah and WSU).

It seems to me like offer sheet matters slightly less for QB’s at this point because teams usually don’t take huge QB classes, so they’re more selective. Near the beginning of the cycle, everyone’s going after their Option A, B, etc. and the next tier of guys take a bit longer to get the higher profile offers they eventually end up with.

      • Johnson is supposed to make a midweek official visit to OSU in early June. I just dont get a high level of interest from him towards OSU. Like we may be in a top 3, but we’re considered more of a backup plan should 1 or 2 not work out. At least that’s the inpression I get

Can anyone find the LOB stats for the conference or NCAA overall. This club has to be near the top of that terrible stat.

    • Maybe! Any insight on why melton is pulled sometimes? Statistically he is our best hitter (sometimes very clutch) and I haven’t seen many fielding issues.

  21. Casey continues to get well vs lower level competition, solo HR makes it 5-0 good guys, t3
Actually, this ‘eater pitcher has done well in the recent past vs P12 teams.

And, no idea why Melton is sitting today

      • concur, Angry. Canham flirted with disaster earlier when he pulled Mulholland hoping to get that proverbial “match up.” That’s hard to do in professional baseball, in college baseball even more so. Predictably, Mundt came in and walked the guy on four pitches and then balked him to second.

who made the big error in the third to get UCI back into the game? wasn’t listening then

Just awful managing. That was literally the only 5 minutes I had to watch all weekend, and I see that. Was he that bad managing the other games?

          Why aren’t fans upset?

Will the media ask him tough questions?

          • I haven’t watched much baseball in the past so it’s hard for me to compare the lineups and pitching management have been questionable. Haven’t seen much small ball from what I’ve watched either. Is it normal to rotate starters positions and in and out of the lineup so much? Do other teams bring in pitchers for 1 inning and then take them out even though they’re pitching great?

    Predictable series loss.

Wasnt someone here predicting a beaver sweep?

I will be surprised if they manage to win any remaining series with the exception of USC.

Also expect to get swept a couple.

    Regional flameout team. At best.

    • no predictable clutch hitter who can count on to win a game regularly; spotty starting pitching. This staff tries to throw a lot of curves rather than pound the zone as in Wetzler, Moore, Heimlich, etc. They try to finesse everything. That’s why they hit a lot of guys.
