Those of us who were nervous about what we were seeing were told baseball would get back to dominance once Bailey was gone and we settled on a full-time manager. Then that happened, and our manager was horrible in year one. Then we were told his performance was due to the Covid shortened season. Now we have a full season in the post-Bailey, full-time manager era, and we see he’s not that good with Xs and Os; he’s not good at setting a lineup (Casey batting 5th was a red flag from game 1); and he’s not good at creating cohesion within the lineup – different lineup every game. He’s not good with pitching changes (or hiring the correct pitching coach), either.
My question is this: what exactly is he good at? Name a strength of Mitch. Just one.
Anyway, despite all this, the sentiment on Twitter seems to be: “because he is ‘one of us’ we have to give him more time.” That’s fine, but the more time you give someone who’s clearly not the right person, the more time you waste and bigger the uphill battle once you finally do cut bait. In short, Mitch can ruin the program forever just like Jimmy Anderson. I don’t know if it will be that dramatic – we might just linger in mediocrity for a while – but we definitely have a program in decline. Our recruiting even seems significantly worse, so that’s the pipeline of talent a few years from now.
The era of baseball dominance is clearly over, and people don’t want to fight for greatness. Instead they want to fight to preserve Mitch’s ego and pride and are using the “give him more time” trope to do so. This is bullish for tribalism, but it’s not what makes dominant baseball.
I don’t recall anyone saying we’d dominate once Bailey was gone. I also can’t think of anyone saying to give him more time “because he’s one of us”. I also don’t think you know much about baseball recruiting so what exactly does significantly worse mean to you….
If you don’t recall that, then you don’t read Twitter.
Well that’s true I don’t. Prove me wrong tho, post them tweets.
Statistically, aren’t they pretty good at defense? I know that doesn’t fit the narrative that he sucks at everything. Let’s not throw the entire program (players included into the trash). Have a good week Angry.
No, I’m not asking the team’s strength. I’m asking what is Mitch’s strength as a HC. For example, Casey was great at instilling fundamentals and putting a bit of fear into players where they knew they had to perform to his level.
So if the team is good at defense, he didn’t have anything to do with that? I get what you are trying to do here but man I feel sorry for you. Get a different outlook on life.
Jesus, talk about hyperbolic bullshit. You act like Pat Casey made it to Omaha every year.
I have no idea if Canham is the right guy or not but acting as though you know it based on this season is fucking ridiculous.
Did you want Casey fired in 2016? I mean the loser missed the tourney, era of dominance over right?
Go fuck yourself.
Moving on, what is Mitch’s strength as a HC?
Whoa ease up sensypoo
Exact expected response.
Remember everyone, angry loved the Andersen hire, he is a clueless blow hard. Nothing more.
Mitch’s biggest asset will be the culture he builds with the program. If you read anything about what he did in the Mariner organization, he got rave reviews from players/organization about his leadership and culture. IMO…he’ll need to adjust his coaching to the college level but he’s the right guy long term.
Have you seen that? The leadership.
In the prior thread, people made the valid point he never argues calls/gets thrown out of games.
I think it’s clear he’s not the right guy, but hope to be wrong. I’d fire him after this season and hire a proven HC while the program is still good enough to ascend. I’ve felt this way for some time, but was trying to give him time. Seen enough at this point to know he’s not the guy.
Wait…so you think getting thrown out and arguing calls = leadership?
Taking into account his body of work with the Mariners and the fact that PC wanted Mitch to be next, I would give the dude more time to right the ship.
Oh God. Angry always turns out to be right. This just ruined my morning.
Lol, Angry loved Andersen. Remember that when you say he’s always right.
What makes you think recruiting has been worse? Almost all the best players on this team were brought in while Canham was HC. The underperformers are Casey holdovers. From all reports, it sounds like we have some good bats coming in, too.
Yeah I almost wonder if part of the problem is Mitch’s loyalty. Most coaches come in a want to play “their guys”. Mitch appears to be the opposite and playing veterans despite them not always being the most talented.
Also, having your best hitter miss the toughest stretch of the schedule is just plain bad luck.
That’s where you’re wrong Beav, Canham clearly wasn’t overseeing his nutrition and weight training properly.
:)
