Baseball Opening Day

324

Last year the Beavs opened against the Lobo’s with a 21-1 win. The trio of Trosky, Boyd, and Melton provided 5 runs; they’re out now. Bazzana, Forrester, and Guerra accounted for 7; they’re still here. Does anyone expect a similar scoring performance today?  Will big run output be needed this year?

Creekwater says he’ll be on hand to provide input here (will he see signs of “Mitch Fear” in any players?). What about BG and wannabeav? Anyone else going to Surprise?
Keep an eye out for signs of “micro management” by Mitch…..filming of every second of practice from different angles could be a sign.  No?

Sounds like Josh Worden will be doing radio (KEJO 1240am). Live video with a Flo Sports subscription.
Here’s the schedule:
Fri 11am pacific vs New Mexico
Sat 11am vs Minnesota
Sun 11am vs New Mexico
Mon noon vs UCSB

Go general if you’d like:
Football news?
Rueck with a chance Friday night to build a base for a PAC tourney run?

GO BEAVS!,,,,,,,,,,Mitch only needs 810 more W’s to match Casey.

  1. Thanks for doing the legwork OOB. Makes it easy for guys like me to pop in and catch up.

i have to assume Forrester will still be that guy who gets on base without actually having to swing his bat. Just wish he actually had more opportunities to hit quality pitches because I don’t know who you have behind him that will bring him home.
Almost think they should have Forrester batting #1 or #2 just because of his on base percentage.
Has the batting order been released?

  2. Interesting quote from Turley:

“I like all the coaches. They’re still so young, it’s like we have buddies who have a lot of knowledge we can go listen to.

  3. OT: Here’s the QB OSU missed playing in the LV Bowl, ranked in a USAToday as an “intriguing” prospect. Until the LV bowl, I was completely unaware of him or how he was perceived:

    “1. Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida

It’s rare to find a quarterback who can rip a throw 60 yards downfield as easily as he can scamper the same distance through a defense. That’s the immediately evident appeal of Richardson, a 6-4, 232-pound big-play dynamo and a prospect without peer in this class. But with only 393 passing attempts to his name and a career 53.7% completion rate, he’s essentially a mystery box to NFL evaluators. At this point, there’s risk in both investing a top pick in a passer this inexperienced and in bypassing one who shows such immense upside. Richardson might end up the fourth quarterback selected, and perhaps outside of the top 10 picks overall, but there’s little question he’s this draft’s most interesting figure.”

With a completion percentage that low, I’m confident the Beaver secondary would have handled him just fine.

He sounds like a complete project yet some team will spend a 1st round pick on him anyway, unbelievable. By picking certain positions in the first round you can almost guarantee yourself an impact player on your team for years to come, yet teams still get blinded by some QB with a big arm or some wheels, who may not actually be, ya know, a good FOOTBALL PLAYER.

Hope Dernedde put things together this offseason.
Had a few good moments last year, but more bad than good.
The fact that he’s starting as the backup option due to injury, doesn’t give me much optimism.

    • Not sure Trosky would have beat him out clean. Trosky’s bat in conference play last year was not much better than Dernedde. He didn’t have a good summer either.

  5. I have mixed feelings about this whole DamNationNIL / Tree3 partnership. First of it’s kind for any collegiate team. Basically a storefront that connects you to several other storefronts, so you can purchase a variety of products that are also available elsewhere. but the catch is a small percentage of your transaction goes towards DamNation NIL which is then divided up among OSU student athletes.

That’s all fine and well, but how likely is it that people will search for products via DamNation, rather than just using google or amazon to search for what they want? I think it will be tough to get consumers to adapt to the new storefront model.
Also, since it’s basically just an alterative search engine, you can but plenty of non-Oregon State related products there. So yes, if you purchase Oregon Ducks gear on this site, a cut goes to Oregon State student athletes.
I’m sure there are plenty of other head scratching products available that don’t exactly fit with Oregon State student athletes.

    • It’s not just pitching. 3 E’s through five innings and 1 run on 5 hits.

Lots of newcomers in the fold, but the offense is mostly coming from newcomers. We need some of the stalwarts like Baz and Forrester to produce in the back half of the game.

    • Hjerpe was the primary bright spot last year and in an interview he had during a game he talked about his off-season workouts with a pitching group in WA really helping develop some of his pitches. Didn’t bring up Dorman at all. Perhaps an oversight at the moment or perhaps very telling. Pitching last year was kind of a reverse from prior year. Less hit batters but also less strike outs and more HR given up. I’ve not been a Dorman fan since the start but I think this year will be a good case study. Can he develop the young arms that will be in the rotation? Think pitching will take a step back outside of a few names but it’s a long season and we’ll see what happens.

  6. Surprise from Surprise….
    Weather cool and windy.
Team looks like crap…Lobos pitching is making us look silly.
Our pitching looks bad. This could be a long season.

    • Not panicking yet but my take is I’d be more surprised by this team being in the top 3 of the Pac 12 than I would them being in the 5, 6 or 7 spot. Too many inexperienced players getting significant time. It’s also unfortunate that our SS is batting 9th. We’ve had a really good run of top tier SS but the drop off to Durnedde is really incredible.

    • Not surprised. This team has too many holes and no big time players. I’d be surprised to see this team make post season. On paper, what is a strength? Pitching-no. Defense-no. Hitting-probably not. Speed-maybe.

    • The talent isn’t great so there’s an only so much Mitch can do… or fuck up. I’d say if he can get this team to the postseason, that would be a successful year for Mitch but I don’t think Casey could even get much out of this team. Not enough quality and experienced pitching. Plus it’s not hard to look at what they lost on offense and see there’s going to be a big drop off. Meckler and Boyd are going to be legit MLB players

Dont forget Melton. Beavs lost some good college talent after last season. Shouldnt be a surprise they’re at a lower tier this season.

    • Bazzana said. “We should dominate those guys. We’ve got to just go play ball and play better. And we will. We’re going to come back with some fire tomorrow.”
We’ll see, good thing about baseball, redemption (such as it is) can come quickly.

Arizona beats #2 Vandy on opening day, Beavs lose to New Mexico. Tomorrow is a new day but I’m prone to thinking this might be more of the norm than the exception this year. We shall see. Game 1 in a long season. Hoped they would’ve looked a little better than they did that’s for sure.

Did we make a deal with Beelzebub for the 10-win football season? Beav sports has been sort of a shit show since the Vegas Bowl victory?

WBB drops number 7 in a row tonight in Seattle. Rueck says effort for three quarters was not acceptable.
Someone here bad mouthed Deven Hunter recently; her body language on TV couldn’t have been worse tonight…..maybe “small sample”, maybe not.

Can’t blame Noelle for this one, or the last. LOL

      • The 4 freshman that played last night at the end of the game, weren’t the starters, they didnt start with 10 point hole, and actually closed the gap from down 17 to make it close at the end.

  8. 3

That’s a brutal, uncompetitive loss to a team picked to finish last in the mountain west conference.

Yeah, it’s one game. Flush it and come to play tomorrow. But I agree with a poster from above. On paper, this team just seems meh. Unless some of the returning players (that were pretty lackluster) made significant leaps over the off-season? This team isn’t going to make the postseason. I was honestly shocked they were picked to finish 3rd in the Pac because realistically I was thinking around 6th or 7th.

    Hope I’m wrong.

  9. Hodgins got a new deal w/NY Giants:

“Hodgins reportedly signed a one-year minimum contract with the team. Hodgins was set to become an exclusive rights free agent when the 2023 NFL season officially begins on March 13. Instead, the Giants locked up Hodgins by signing him to a minimum contract ($825,000 for a player with fewer than three accrued seasons and an expired contract).”

    • Sort of a “new deal”, as an ERFA with only 2 seasons all the Giants have to do is extend the 1-year minimum qualifying offer and he can’t negotiate with other teams, he’s stuck with them on the 825k minimum for 2023. It isn’t guaranteed, and he can still get cut or sent to the practice squad.

If they do decide to keep him through next off-season, they’ll have to tender him as a Restricted Free Agent (or waive him). He’ll be able to negotiate with other teams but the Giants can choose to match and are able to offer more.

If he makes the 53-man roster in 2023 (very likely) it’s a good opportunity to solidify himself as a productive vet (if not a star) and earn himself a big pay raise and longer-term security next off-season (2.5+ mil per season + guarantees/bonuses).

  10. I decided to watch the women’s bball game last night. It’s a very different vibe from Rueck’s earlier successes. Team is just not coming together. Some lazy passing led to easy buckets. Lack of a true point guard really hurts. I can see why they can be competitive at points but then just don’t have the killer factor to close out games or make a comeback.

    • Different vibe for sure.
Transfer portal has left Rueck with such a young team. Upperclasswomen don’t seem to be stepping up. Talia out of sorts and Jelena not reaching the Gulich/Hamblin level and Bendu got some fire but seems to try to do too much at times.

There is reason to believe in Rueck, but he’ll have to learn how to manage the new era of PAC12 sports.

BTW, didja notice Hunter during timeouts? Appeared totally disinterested at times.

      • “he’ll have to learn how to manage the new era of PAC12 sports”.
I’m not sure he can. For one thing, I think men coaching wbb is a thing of the past. His teams are always slow and deliberate without quickness. I watched the Colorado game – Buffs never stopped running, plays and scoring materialized without standing around.

        • 2
          1

The “family thing” doesn’t seem to be working for Rueck any longer in the instant portal world. I think what’s most disconcerting is that he is still seemingly recruiting at a high level, but the product on the court is so inconsistent. And how long is that going to last with the results over the past two seasons? Not that he will be let go, but he’s got some things to figure out quickly before the program becomes irrelevant.

      • What’s with TVO? She said she came to OSU to “cut down nets” and she’s not leaving, but sounds like she can mentally be taken out if her game. I was really hoping she’d be a major program contributor.

Maybe just the responses of a young person, but i hope she can pull it together and provide consistency.

  11. Turley first to third on Cedillo single to left…….almost wish I had subscribed to Flo

UPDATE: Heads up baserunning by both Cedillo and Turley responsible for 2 added runs, 8-2 Beavs.

  12. Darn! the hits just keep on coming. Bazzana can’t get the ball out of his glove cleanly, bobble could have been a DP, challenge results in not even an out. Followed by an RBI single.
May not impact today’s result, but an error that could have been two outs is a sad picture of how this season is starting. Lots of games left, c’mon Miiiiitch, get ’em focused!!

  13. Watching the game in person. This team is definitely a bit of a mess. Pitching is suspect. Defense isn’t good. Plate discipline felt better today with the walks but 5 hits thru 6 innings isn’t too great. Gopher pitching wasn’t super impressive. Errors. Gonna be a long season Angry Beavs crew.

  14. 5
    1

Well here’s my take after watching game 2 in person. A few beers deep and blasted by the sun but still seeing straight so think my observations are still valid. It’s a long season so hopefully things get cleaned up but man, it’s a little scary.

First off, our pitching is not good. We might have 3-4 good arms but after that, I’ve not seen much to be excited about. Y’all know my thoughts on Dorman…I’d love to see a change there for sure. If our starters can’t go more than 3-4 innings we’re in a shit-load of trouble. There weren’t any cheap hits all game. Balls were roped to the outfield. Grounders were sharply. Good contact all day. I feel sorry for Keljo. Should’ve gotten out of the 7th with that double play but Bazanna with an error and then boom, 5 runs out of nowhere.

Defense is bad. Dernedde is hot garbage. That might be a bit harsh and the beer talking but he’s avg at best on defense and his error cost them a run. His bat is awful. He did have the good infield hit for an rbi and nearly hit into a double play but beat the throw by half a step. If we don’t have anyone else at all to play some SS, God help us. Outfield has a bunch of noodle arms out there. Cut-off man is going to need to run halfway to the fence to get the relay. Thank God for Tanner Smith. His 2 throws in the 1st probably won them the game and he is by far the best defensive player out there.

Offense is going to struggle to score runs. Our senior SS is batting 9th. Not sure you need to write anything more than that. Turley is fantastic. He takes massive swings. His fly ball for the 1st rbi was ripped. He’s either gonna rip the seams off the ball or strike out. I’m ok with that. We need guys to take pitches cause most of them couldn’t hit the ball with an oar. In all seriousness, if Bazanna and Forrester don’t get going, I don’t know where the runs will come from unless we can continue to draw walks. 8 walks today, only 5 hits. We’ll need to get 5 or 6 walks a game to score some runs. The gophers made 1 great defensive play out in center but otherwise, most our outs were pretty pedestrian…wasn’t like we were getting unlucky with great defensive plays, etc.

If I’m MC, I don’t even know where to start. Big questions in every aspect of this team right now. Hope to get to the game tomorrow. Perhaps with the 1st win out of the way they’ll start to loosen up and play some ball.

    • Thanks, great to get reports from ab’s in attendance, I’ve been told BG sat behind the Gopher dugout.
Still, looking forward to his input. Probably has to down a couple spotted cows first.

      • Your wish is my command!
I did sit behind the Gopher dugout, but I was in Beaver gear. Spotted Cows..yes
My take: I was actually more impressed by the Gophers. If not for a couple overly aggressive/stupid base running errors in the 1st, they probably win today.
Our SS is not good and so far below what we are accustomed to it is unbelievable that they did not bring one in this class. Like Smith not getting a FG kicker? Coaching malpractice.
Forrester needs to be more aggressive at the plate. Last year it was fine for him to take walks as he had other potential RBI men behind him. This year he’s the RBI guy and he needs to change his mindset.
As it stands right now, the building blocks that have defined this baseball program, great pitching, and great defense are sorely lacking. Unfortunately, they do not have the offensive fire power to make up for those shortcomings at this stage.

The bright spot today was Keljo. He was hitting 94 and looks the part of a future ace. The question is if Dorman can develop him? We’ll see how they do against New Mexico tomorrow. New Mexico has actually been the most impressive team here. They beat Santa Barbara tonight and they’ve got a fiery balanced team. In some regard the beavers are playing like they think they should just show up and win the game. This is early, but it appears this team is going to be well below what we have become accustomed to as Beaver baseball fans.

  15. How does this team not have more talent on the field when MC has had 3 loaded recruiting classes in a row now? We’re still starting a few brand new JC transfers who were not all-American types.

  16. I think this is the second game I have seen this year where the Beavs missed their first 14 3-point shots. And it’s not like they took bad shots either game. Just clank city.

  17. 4
    1

Am I seeing this correctly? Men’s Basketball was 2/19 beyond the arc? Lol, lol, lol… that’s all you can do at this time is laugh. Or cry. Or both.

  18. 3
    1

Beaver bats are anemic this season.
1 hit through 4 innings against New Mexico’s day 3 pitcher.
As a few have already said before, this team doesnt have a single strength to rely on to overcome other deficiencies. They’re deficient in all phases right now

  19. Beavs went up 6-4. Only to let the Lobos come back to tie it at 6.

Been all Beavs since and they’ve put up another crooked number in the last of the 8th capped by a Tanner Smith grand slam.

    14-6 Beavs

  20. Obviously this team is missing Ben Ferrer in high leverage situations but freshman AJ Hutschison has been absolutely lights out this weekend.

If that continues? Imagine having Hutchison, Ferrer and Ryan Brown at the back end of innings 7-9!

  21. 1
    1

Wasn’t able to attend today’s game unfortunately. Sprinkler system issues…adulting sucks. Anyway, has McDowell perhaps claimed his freshman year MOJO? Believe he has the teams’ best batting avg. Dernedde tied with 2 others for 4 rbi yet is batting .180 on the season. 2 hits and no walks. I hope this team can find some consistency as they move forward. Can’t hit vs the fri/sat peeps and then beat up on game 3 bullpen? Has the feeling that Bazanna and Forrester are super crucial for this team’s success. Knew that they’d be important but when they’re not involved team obviously struggles and wins probably hard to come by. When they show up, good things happen.

Gave up 20 runs in 3 games. Doesn’t seem viable long term to need 8 runs a game to win. Pitching and defense definitely need to make huge strides.

  22. Remember last week there was a duck WR transfer from Alabama who had been arrested on a weapon’s charge and menacing, in the news? And everybody was applauding Dan Lanning for swiftly kicking the guy out of the program?

Well apparently body cam footage showed it wasnt him, and Lane County cops have dismissed the charges. Gotta be an awkward converasation when Lanning asks him to come back, haha.

    https://www.kezi.com/news/lane-county-d-a-no-charges-against-former-uo-football-player-traeshon-holden/article_59edc812-af2b-11ed-85e7-0be025c377e9.html

    2

What a strange opening weekend for baseball. Lose to a perennial loser, struggle to win the next two games and then shutout the one program picked to win their conference.

The big difference in games 2-4, the returning guys got their bats going. Bazzanna and Forrester really set the tone for the offense.

        • Yup. You play the hand you’re dealt.

With the focus being exposure and revenue, the goal would be to thread the needle. Exposure will take a big hit on Apple TV, so they better be getting good money. If that’s the case, this is a decent deal. All other channels were partially full, so exposure wasn’t going to be great. 10PM EST slot on ABC really isn’t worth much in national exposure.

Apple is looking to invest heavily in sports rights. It already locked up MLS and is bidding for the Premier League and others. For PAC fans, it’s cheap for now ($7/month), and available anywhere which is WAY better than the current P12 Network fiasco.

Just looking at subscriber counts, ESPN cable currently sits at 75M and lost 10% over the last year. That number will continue to decline as people keep cutting the cord. Apple TV is at 20M. Amazon is estimated at 200M, but much of that is international, which really doesn’t matter in college sports. Amazon would have been nice, but clearly the money wasn’t there.

If I were GK, I would be pushing for Apple to make moves to keep nationally relevant games accessible like making one game per week free. Otherwise the conference will fall off even more with poll voters.

          • As a consumer I like it. $7 per month to stream 4 or 5 games a month and then cut subscription the rest of the year? I’d pay that. Much better than trying to figure out week to week if I’ll be able to coble together the right streaming package to get ESPNU or FS1 or Pac12 Network or some other lower tier regional service that only people in specific zip codes with specific ISPs

          • I’m all for streaming games. Just do it on the app that everyone already has instead of a shitty one nobody cares about. Pac-12 network 2.0.

          • Bummer is $7/month seems unlikely beyond maybe this year. Apple is bidding big bucks for other rights, which they’ll include in the package and use to justify a price increase.

MLS on Apple+ has a standalone package price of $99/yr, which seems reasonable to me if you’re paying for everything you would have gotten with the P12 Network.

          • Those are all irrelevant.
This is simply for the streaming rights, not tv.
So no more Pac 12 Plus, ESPN3, FloSports, or whatever… on home games.

          • I pay for sling just so that I can access pac 12 network. I don’t use it for any other services and the bill is currently ~55/mo. 7 bucks is a steep discount compared to that.

  24. Was it ever announced where Terry Boss left Oregon State for? Isn’t the MLS about to start? You would have thought it would have been disclosed at some point.

The bat flip halfway down the line?
      Yes… excessive.
The stuff on the basepaths are weird, but unless they mean something specific, like taunting, they can just remain weird.

Whatever happened to celebrating after you win? Instead of show boating like a jackass during the game.

      Hey everybody!!! Look at me!!!!

    • Hopefully Larnach has a breakout year too, Madrigal bounces back from injury and Grenier breaks out of his funk and makes it to the show.

Only other former Beavs in the minors that might debut this year is Eisert. Hard throwing lefties will always get a call up.

IT: CBS mock draft has Luke Musgrave going to Green Bat at pick 15, round 1.

    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2023-nfl-two-round-mock-draft-jimmy-garoppolo-to-raiders-lamar-jackson-to-commanders-giants-trade-up-for-qb/amp/

Go Luke go! And catch the ball!

Also, the idea that Indy will trade up to #1 to take a flyer on former FLA QB Richardson is sweet. I love it when teams reach for measurables and combine performers and get burned..

    • It would be great if Musgrave can get drafted that high, that would also help a lot with recruiting. While I don’t necessarily think he is a faster Travis Kelce 2.0, he is a fastest TE that has been tracked through GPS in terms of MPH.

    • If he could catch the ball, that would be great.

Darrius Heyward-Bey was the fastest WR in his class, DHB could not catch a ball. DHB collected bag dropping passes.

      • DHB caught at least one TD against OSU in the 2007 Bowl game we played. Weird game. Both teams on the same sideline. James Rodgers ran for over 100 yards on fly sweeps alone. Beavs won that one, 21-14.

  26. Nolan makes list of top 10 available transfers in the upcoming window for spring camp:

    https://247sports.com/LongFormArticle/College-football-transfer-portal-rankings-2023-10-best-available-players-entering-spring-practice-205130373/Amp/

“Being a more experienced guy, I’m really just looking for the fit that allows me to show my playmaking ability,” Nolan said in an interview with 247Sports’ Chris Hummer. “I have big aspirations to play at the next level, and I want to help make a program better.”

  27. I realize being from Baltimore doesn’t make them immune from snow, but Coppin State is probably wondering how they’re supposed to be playing this weekend in snow.

Always thought the Beavs should be able to bring in a top-level program for a pre-season series – or even travel to SEC or ACC country.

        • An injury would be one explanation for her terrible season. Her post does say she is ‘finally working toward getting healthy, both physically and mentally.’ She has looked mentally checked out most games.

Interestingly, I think it was Kennedy Brown made (what I thought was) a snide remark when she left OSU about finding a team that prioritized her health. I thought it was weird at the time. Maybe something to ponder?

          • Brown announced her move April of 22, shortly after entering the portal. I see that one month earlier she retweeted this from Talia:
please please make sure you know the intentions of these trainers y’all are trusting your kids with!!! who they are as a person is just as important as how much knowledge of the game they have. tired of seeing these things happen in the basketball community. we gotta do better.

Not clear to what she was referring. Doubtful that Andrea’s career was involved.
Wonder if having a local, solid beat writer would shed any light on situations like this.
#need direct link to Ron Callan

          • This isn’t LaVonda-level stuff, but these aren’t good noises.
And one only has to wonder how far it could go, given it’s happened before.

    • There has been something off about her all season, save for a few games, and especially lately. Loose passes, shooting slumps, inability to get separation from her defender, etc. OSU’s penchant for staying mum on injuries can get a bit frustrating for fans. The Ducks are open about it, but not the Beavs. Rueck’s policy, I suspect. Her tweet discusses getting healthy, both mentally and physically. Hopefully, we will see her back next year. Without her, the last several years would have been even more disappointing.

      • College sports clinging to “confidentiality” on matters regarding player discipline and health sometimes does more to protect the coaches and staffers than it does the players.

The Beavs have a history regarding lingering injuries in all sports. And I also imagine the college doesn’t have extensive resources when it comes to madical opinions. It’s a one hospital town.

  28. OT: “Nvidia adds $79 billion in market value after CEO Jensen Huang says ChatGPT represents an inflection point for artificial intelligence.”

Umm, can you help OSU get a new MBB coach? Part owner of Milwaukee Bucks, correct?

Already building a super computer facility at OSU…looking forward to that.

      • Output with bias can be formed after repeatedly massaging the inputs to get the desired biases. But let’s be honest. How many of the GOP and neo-Nazis are going to be using it for anything but boilerplate stuff they’re just too lazy to write themselves?
The bigger issue is that it draws on material that is already wrong, but it’s so commonplace, that the output resembles the ubiquity of social stupidity.
So a typical white supremacist can’t even find any real bias on the machine, because knowledge is typically what triggers them. And if it’s just spewing back what it thinks people want to hear, what is not knowledge only looks like it is–thus, the white supremacists whining about it being biased, when there aren’t any facts to back up the output. That last is what makes the white supremacists usually pretty funny-railing against science and the laws of nature and all that. But ChatGPT will spit out nonsense resembling facts, and they’ll be just as whiny over nonsense as they are over solid facts.
I think it’s just a them thing, at this point.

    • Yea you’re right. It’s funny cause I’ve been watching a lot of the Colorado off-season workouts cause Deion Jr posts multiple vids a day, and a lot of the players seem used to being on camera now. Can tell these guys (especially the QB’s) aren’t super into being on youtube.

      • Just some totally speculative observations on the different extraverted and introverted personality types of the players and how that intersects with zoomer social-media culture, especially with players now trying to be YouTubers since it’s NIL-able. It’s interesting to me. Personally I think they should have an undergrad-assistant doing the same kind of daily content Deion Jr is doin at Colorado, but it’s cool to see a couple of the players doing it on their own. I made an error in assuming the new kid was behind the camera the whole time and speculating that maybe some players weren’t that into it because of that. I was wrong. I’m sorry.

  29. FINAL: ASU gets their first conf win as Beavs can’t hold a third quarter 17 pt lead, lose 75-73
From TV, Talia looked involved the whole way.
Points off of TO’s?………ASU13, Beavs 6

    • Used to be the press and TOs that regularly plagued Rueck’s squads, correct? Disappointing there isn’t program progress in that regard.

Rueck’s had the program at a pretty high level for years. Downturns are normal and too be expected. Its how they deal with it. There seems to be a lot of young, physical talent (from what I read). Can he keep them committed to the program and get them on the same page and get back on an upswing?

  30. I caught a bit of the CU/USC game on TV while at a workout club tonight. Fuck it was boring. Lots of empty seats, didn’t seem to be a loud student presence from what I saw. How is this sustainable as a marketable product that sells advertisements?

They panned to football coach Sanders more than once, so exposure achieved for them…

I saw where the PAC might be negotiating with Apple(?) to get its games on the air.

    Here’s what MLS did:

    https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/mls-apple-have-high-expectations-with-launch-of-17802542.php

The PAC is really timing things poorly. The conference fared well in football in 2022 in terms of Top 25 final rankings if not CFP. The Huskies, Beavers, Ducks, Utes, and USC all have compelling teams and stories next year (UCLA too?) before USC and UCLA leave. CU will get loads of annoying, fawning attention.

So the product is getting more interesting, but the inability to secure a good broadcast deal in the context of conference realignments is maddening. Any good PAC games next season not in prime viewing slots should be labeled “Larry Scott Throat Punch!” instead of “PAC 12 After Dark” or some other lame name.

Note the PAC hasn’t had a team in the CFP since 2016 when….the Huskies went with Smith as OC….Hmmmm.

    • The nine-game conference slate and East Coast Bias have more to do with that than anything else.
Parity makes for better football, but nobody gets to the fake championships, due to better football. It’s all about the hype and protecting the product some people have a vested interest in protecting.
When we finally get a D1A Football Championship, it will take a couple years to wash the hype machine clean. Then we’ll see some real post-season play.

Cold cold baseball today. Weather looks clear but freezing.

Don’t think any positions get a benefit from the cold. Pitchers might have a hard time gripping and the hitters will lack power. Small ball might be the name of the game today. I think both teams will want to play fast and get the game done quickly.

And to be honest, they should play 2 on Saturday. Sunday looks wet.

Would be nice to see the starters go more than 5 innings today. Last weekend showed the bullpen is not that deep.

As for the lineup, Guerra should get a shot at least at DH though that might be tough since Kasper, McDowell, Cedillo and Turley hit well enough to keep them in the lineup. Kane showed no reason to take him out at 3B. Guerra had the highest exit velo of the weekend on his only hit and he hit in his limited ABs last year. He had 2 ABs last week. Wonder how bad his defense that he can’t sub in at short, he already made one error in his only appearance on the field. Maybe the added offense is worth more than losing Dernedde at SS.

    • Good call on Guerra, 4 AB, a bb, a double, and a stolen base.
Dernedde pedestrian at ss, but swung the bat pretty well.
      Final 11-1 good guys.

      • Dernedde goes 1-4 but it was a 3 run Homer. I can’t imagine a healthy Trosky isn’t the starter over Dernedde. Dude is batting .217 and has at least 1 error so far this season. Not a fan of your SS batting 9th, particularly when 3 or 4 of the guys hitting in front of him are freshman or sophomores with little game time. Turley has definitely shown up so far. Good avg but also draws walks. Didn’t have a ton of hits in Surprise but got on base a fair bit with the walks. Stoked to see how much more he can develop.

  33. OT: Per On3,
Mike Cavanaugh, being hired as Oregon’s newest offensive coach, will carry title of assistant OL coach and offensive analyst.
Must be semi-retired, wouldn’t expect him to accept anything less than a co-head coach type gig.

Appears to be an attempt by Lanning to add some experience to his very young staff; presents a management challenge.

Wonder if smilin’ Mike has been approached? Put him in charge of clock management….LOL

    https://twitter.com/mzenitz/status/1628921075495993345

  34. ASU AD says revenue expectations from new media deal are “below what they hoped for, but solid enough to keep the conference together.”

Writing appears to be on the wall for more teams to eventually bolt and the PAC to eventually merge with MWC.

    • Saw an idea for merging with the ACC and making a “Coastal Conference” of sorts. Seemed better than bring in meh programs to try to keep the Pac-12 limping along.

          • Ooh!
Sort of like Notre Dame does with the ACC… without football.
If the merger was to happen, it might have to go through South Bend for an okay. Partnering with Zags and maybe Loyola Marymount for everything but football might appeal to them and BC.

        • This makes too much sense.

It’s a good plan, better than trying to piecemeal in a SMU here, a Fresno there, a San Diego next year type scheme.

“THE Coastal Conference” with an east division and a west division. Good academics. Good athletics. Conference championship still in Vegas.

          What’s the downside?

          • We can alternate championship sites between New York and LA, if we wanted.
Who cares about Vegas, when we have those neutral sites available?

          • We don’t care about Vegas because we’re west coast. There’s an entire half of the country looking for an excuse to go to Vegas. It’d be a good draw.

          • Why would anyone fly almost all the way across the continent, just to sit in the desert?
            Because they can’t gamble online?
Football championship at SoFi in the fall, and hoops at MSG, three or so months later. The next year, it’s football at MetLife Stadium, and hoops at the Forum.
Burgers and nachos one year, deli food and pizza, the next… and a coast.

  35. After 4 full, Sellers at 71 pitches, 4-0 good guys. Seeing some decent base running.

Then Sellers needs only 9 more pitches to close out the 5th.

  36. 1
    1

Today’s win was what opening day should have looked like. Workmanlike blowout with a lot of guys seeing time.

Sellers with a longer outing. For a guy who doesn’t have overpowering stuff, he gets a lot of whiffs. Got to 3-2 counts a lot in the game running up his pitch count. Something to work on. When conference season rolls around, he’ll need to be more efficient.

Later in the year, pitchers are not going to challenge Turley due to his power. His showed good patience with two walks after hitting his dinger.

Quinn is lost. 3 walks in one inning. Had one guy 0-2 and walked him. Also had a four pitch walk.

Should expect more of the same for the next two games.

    • Freeman at the big O reports that Sellers was suffering a stomach bug that has “been making its way around the Oregon State baseball clubhouse”….Sellers said, “I was puking before the game,” … “and probably puked twice in between each inning.”
Sounds like he has a great chance of being more efficient if/when he shakes that bug.

Also, Krieg sure is a big boy. Performed well at the plate; I saw no shortcomings at first as well. Miiiitch says, “He was very cozy in the box and also did a good job at first base…”
      “Cozy” huh?………well OK

    • Reminds me somehow, saw that Traeshon Holden has been reinstated by nike after DA declined to press charges. Reports are that the DA found the incident “spiraled out of control quickly” and that Holden, who did have a gun, would’ve had legitimate grounds of self-defense or defense of others. Apparently no shots were actually fired.

      • Apparently there were loud words being had at drunk-thirty in the morning, and one fo the girls who was with the guy loudly wording at Holden approached the two and pepper sprayed Holden in the face, in the middle of it.
It’s not clear if he brandished the gun or just showed it or just mentioned he had one, but the loud wording stopped at that point, followed by fast feeting and police calling.

  37. Unleash the beasts!!! OSU RB preview:

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2023/02/oregon-state-beavers-2023-spring-football-position-preview-running-back.html?outputType=amp

Nothing surprising or revelatory, but it is great to see all that depth.

One thing that stood out to me in watching 2023 highlights was how hard Jam Griffin ran, from USC to CW to punking a Gator DB in the bowl game on a TD run. Hoping he (and all of them) enjoy a healthy season in ’23, because Griffin I recall was limited early in ’22 by injury.

Also, i hope all of them get to work on receiving, its an aspect of the offense ripe for diversification and production.

    • Hopefully we see more of it. I think they’re all capable but especially Lowe and Griffen. A lot of the problem was that Nolan never checked it down to them when they were wide open for easy yards. I can’t remember but it seemed like BG mightve done a better job at it. Anytime you can get the ball to your running back in open space good things will happen.

    • That’s the next step for this offense. Get the RBs more involved in the passing game. Maybe Smith and Lindgren will spend time studying NFL offenses on how to get the RBs more involved on passing downs.

Next year if the QB starts throwing check downs to the RB in the flats. The offense will be hard to stop.

LOLOL at this quote from Tinkle in the latest O-live article. Apparently at least 10 years is the amount of time he needs. What a tool.

“I’ve just got to stay focused on my process and the way we do things. When we have time, we build winning programs,” he said.

    • Last year, he said (when Rupp etc., were still involved) paraphrase: ‘we know this system works, we’ve used it before”- I won’t repeat the cliché that applies here – Process? Winning program(s)? – Huh?

    • 9
      1

Big Tinks’ “legacy” of winning at OSU has almost been 100% predicated upon a Craig Robinson recruit that fell into his with GP-2 and coaches’ sons. What has he done outside of that? He does have two of the worst seasons in Beav hoops history on his record with 5-27 and 3-28 records to his credit. The only reason I can figure out why he still has a major college job is because of university finances.

          • I just don’t know what really changes for next year. He’s not going to suddenly install an offensive scheme in year 10. And even if all those freshman stick around, are they going to all suddenly develop into great shooters? It’s also an incredibly boring style of play. Think i’d rather watch Dean Smith 4 corners with no shot clock than whatever we have.

          • He does seem like a genuinely great guy. I don’t think it is an act either. Montana fans still love the guy too. But at the end of the day coaches are judged on the product on the court.

      • The only reason I went to yesterday’s game was because someone bought tickets at the beginning of the year and just didn’t want to go.
I’m not buying tickets for a couple years, at this point.

Trent Bray on the ESPN list of coordinators to watch in the next hiring cycle. If he has another good year, he’ll be on every short list if a MW job opens up. Needs two or three more good years to go for a P5 job.

  40. WBB plays up to their potential and beats 14-ranked Arizona 78-70. Scary in the 4th quarter as they once again blow a huge lead, but hang on. Nice to see the disastrous losing streak finally end.

    • 6
      1

They were smoking those fools until the 4th quarter when AZ went to thug ball, street fighter special. Apparently Beers is allowed to be used as a punching bag because of her size. Refs allowed the thing to get completely out of control. Good to see the ladies fight back though and finally win one of these slug fests.

  41. Ever since the baseball team lost the opener to New Mexico, they’ve outscored opponents 58-14 since with more to come today and have allowed 1 run in their last 27 innings. They’re a damn good team. Again. The UCSB team they crushed on Monday are on the verge of sweeping the Ducks in Eugene. Beavs started a little slow with so many new faces and guys in bigger roles but the talent on this team is obvious. Turley right there with Conforto for best freshman hitter I’ve seen as a Beav and I think he has a little more power. That kid is a special talent

    • Turley homer clocked at 435 ft. Lol. His approach at the plate is really fantastic for a freshman. Post game interview he talked about knowing he was going to get a slider for that pitch and called it to Barney.

    • 4
      1

UCSB does, in fact, go on to sweep the ranked ducks. New Mexico looking pretty good too (out of respect for BG, I’ll not mention the Gopher record):
-UCSB is 5-2 with their only losses to Beavs and Lobos
-UNM is 6-1, unbeaten except for their loss to the Beavs

Interesting to review the comments here during the first two games, some nervousness and some outright despair. But many ab’s pointed to it being a long season.
      It still is.

      • People tend to overreact on here but hey that’s what fans do. Glad that they’re putting it together. Hopefully they can keep it going and compete for the pac title.

      • I admit I was concerned after the first loss. I don’t think I commented on it though. But it is baseball… one of the most upset possible sports. Should never make judgements based on one game… good or bad.

      • We’re playing Coppin State. Way too early to know how good or bad this team is but they really haven’t proven anything yet. I still don’t think the pitching and defense is good enough to make post season.

    • 3
      2

That’s fair. But we’ve seen this all before. Raking against non conference early competition only to fall flat in conference play.

Look, I hope you are correct. But I have serious reservations about the current weekend rotation against the likes of Stanford or say, UCLA. Even Cal is 6-1 after today? Are they good????

Point being, it’s too early to get too high or low. Unless you’re the ducks. They suck. So fuck them

      • Agreed, way early. Have a freind that went to the last 2 games in surprise. Thought they were solid but didnt think they could win the pac 12 unless pitching improved.

  42. 5 hits and an RBI bb for Micah McDowell today, like Noelle, he’s a hustler who has been underappreciated by some fans who focus only on the stat sheet.
Nice to see him off to a good start this season.

    • Micah had been overmatched at the plate before this season. His surprising development along with guys like Kasper and even Dernedde showing more pop than ever before goes to show how good this coaching staff is when it comes to player development. One of the best in the country. Beavs are gonna be really good for a long time with Mitch at head coach. Really looking forward to seeing what this young team can do this season.

  43. Well, at least it’s not a blowout yet. Beavs trail Quacks 35-29 at the half courtesy of another one of their “patented” scoring droughts. They actually led before not scoring for three minutes plus.

  44. Tough to watch, with missed free throws, and a couple of missed shots around the basket. A poorly conceived play when Akanno wildly drives against Quack bigs and doesn’t even draw iron (Akanno did play a nice overall game). Sloppy three-point defense. That’s how a team blows a five-point lead.

    • It was subzero MT, so nice to have Beaver games during the latest winter blast.
WBB: Generally seems to be bully ball now. Arizona #4 was literally beating up on Beers non-stop, not to mention Martinez tackling her. Jelena hung onto the ball most of the time which was nice to see.
Tinkle : Taylor Jr. gets mugged by 3 duck players and loses the ball. Play on? Nope, pull Taylor out and dramatically lecture him on the sideline. Taylor wouldn’t look at him.

    • Saw Iowa scored 23 pts in the final 90 seconds yesterday to come back from a deficit and defeat Michigan State in OT. MSU was up 13 at the 90 second mark
And it’s not like Michigan State did nothing, they were hitting their free throws. Just Iowa got insanely hot from 3 and completed the comeback.

      https://youtu.be/SUQge4yvEYQ

      • Iowa seems very well-coached. There was no effing around, they fouled quickly to save the clock and then got into their offense fast. It’s not like they made every three they took either, they just did an outstanding job of extending the game.

  45. Cold and wet in Corvallis today. Just hope it stops during game time.

Also Portland! Taking the first two games at Texas A&M this weekend. Helps the Beavs non con RPI as it’s a much lighter non con this year.

  46. OT: that ’24 recruit in the twitter feed, Carlon Jones, picked up his 2nd P5 offer, this one from the Beavs. He’s going to get a lot more in the future. It’s oly highlights, but he’s in the backfield a lot, tracks the ball well, makes plays, and has great grades. Looks like they continue to identify talent early.

    • Since UCLA and USC decided to throw away more than 100 years of history and tradition for a buck–without discussing any of it with their alums, students, faculty, or anyone else–it would be wise of them to know that the majority of Pac 12 alumni that live in LA are not UCLA and USC alumni.
Most Pac schools’ biggest alumni chapters are in LA, as Colorado kept telling everyone when they were vying to play the LA schools every year.
And I can tell you the alumni and students of UCLA are extremely pissed off about this, right now. I’m not sure I care about USC alums.
Parents of athletes at UCLA are also really pissed off. A survey of their athletes shoed only about a third of them thought it was a good idea. UCLA should be thinking about what the portal will do to them in the next few years.
That doesn’t make Kliavkoff’s job any easier, but it’s fun to watch.

      • One vocal UCLA alum has made his disdain for the deal known. Bill Walton has said, among several other things, that:
I have spoken to no one, other than the highest-level directors of athletics at UCLA, who think that this proposed move to the Big 10 is a good idea, every argument made by these senior AD’s and why they like it, is about money, these same proponents of moving to the Big 10, are the first people I have ever encountered in my life, who have claimed economic hardship and limitations in Los Angeles,

        • One thing USC and UCLA didn’t really think about is that the TV deal for the B1G was announced as “conference sports from morning to night” on Saturdays.
Well… how are USC and UCLA football fans going to feel about those 7:30 start times? At least they’ll get 9 am start times, when their teams travel.

          • The very best thing -cold, very cold revenge – would be for the remaining pac teams to defeat, especially football, either or both UCLA or USC in their last season.

          • We’ll see if USC slips into the big dance this year. I think they’re one of the last four out, at this point. They need to win out this weekend.
Jarod Lucas is going back this year.
But you’re not wrong about those schools having to make winter travel through the B1G a new thing.

    • 10

It also looks like Amazon will be the best bet, withholding some Friday and Saturday night games for the still-tethered TV.
I saw one speculative report say that deal would be north of $35m per school, annually, if the Pac leased the Pac Network to Amazon, as well.
Having our own network should have been for this end goal a long time ago. An international audience able to watch all our content at any time should have been what we were trying to do for years.
And then I can finally be rid of these shitty providers with their minimum packages and other garbage I don’t need.

      • They could easily do the streaming thing right and come out smelling like a rose, including not only live broadcast but a library of games from the entire season that you could go back and watch any time. That would be great because I’ve got shit to do on fall Saturdays.

      • New deal needs to be at least on par if not more than the BIG12 and ACC.

Hope the PAC12 lets the media partner know that if they want a better product, they’ll need to make an investment in these programs to keep pace with the other conferences. Otherwise it’s a quick spiral down.

      • This point of yours from above: “Parents of athletes at UCLA are also really pissed off. A survey of their athletes showed only about a third of them thought it was a good idea. UCLA should be thinking about what the portal will do to them in the next few years.” is a great one. All of that travel and the odd start times will become a pain.

And I doubt the conference that is adopting is going to mind having them at a disadvantage when it comes to travel and start times.

Besides getting a decent deal with Amazon or Apple, it seems like ensuring some agreement to be able to compete for meaningful bowl games, such as Rose Bowl, should be part of the PAC’s goals.

  47. This doesn’t mean anything right now, BUT Wade Meckler got into his first spring training game today for the Giants. Followed Conforto in the lineup and both singled back to back so a nice little story there. Kind of surprising that Wade would get such an early look in spring training and he hadn’t played past A ball.

  48. Big fan of this new infield look right now. Mikey Kane at SS and Forrester at 3rd. I’m sure Kane will cool off at some point but his bat seems too good to leave on the bench. Better competition will change the offensive results of some of these guys but you can’t keep a guy batting .200 as your SS all season, especially one that’s avg on defense. Interesting Dernedde hasn’t played in 2 games unless I’ve missed some injury to him?

    • I think this might be the new lineup going forward. Forrester moves off of first to third (Improves his draft stock). Krieg takes over at 1st. He’s shown a good bat and patience at the plate. As long as Kane can show he can play an adequate SS, he’ll stay there. He does lack the range of Dernedde so he’ll need to make the routine plays.

OF will still be a battle between Kasper, McDowell and Cedillo for CF and RF. Iron sharpens iron there.

Guerra’s bat needs to stay in the lineup so he’ll need to find a spot to play defensively. Talt will be the late inning pinch runner.

All that said, it’s early and the Coppin State wasn’t much of a test. Cal Poly isn’t that good either.
